Korupodendron songweanum, a new genus and species of Vochysiaceae from West-Central Africa

{btKorupodendron songweanum} is described as the second genus of Vochysiaceae from Africa. Its classification, biogeography, conservation status, and local name and uses are discussed.     

Three new species of Melhania (Sterculiaceae) from north-eastern tropical Africa

Melhania annua , sp. nov., from coastal or subcoastal dunes in Somalia and Kenya, M. hiranensis , sp. nov., from Acacia-Commiphora bushland on sand in south-central Somalia, and M. quercifolia , sp. nov., from coastal dunes in Somalia, are described and illustrated.     

Cryptomyrus: a new genus of Mormyridae (Teleostei,Osteoglossomorpha) with two new species from Gabon,West-Central Africa

We use mitochondrial and nuclear sequence data to show that three weakly electric mormyrid fish specimens collected at three widely separated localities in Gabon, Africa over a 13-year period represent an unrecognized lineage within the subfamily Mormyrinae and determine its phylogenetic position with respect to other taxa. We describe these three specimens as a new genus containing two new species. Cryptomyrus, new genus, is readily distinguished from all other mormyrid genera by a combination of features of squamation, morphometrics, and dental attributes. Cryptomyrus ogoouensis, new species, is differentiated from its single congener, Cryptomyrus ona, new species, by the possession of an anal-fin origin located well in advance of the dorsal fin, a narrow caudal peduncle and caudal-fin lobes nearly as long as the peduncle. In Cryptomyrus ona, the anal-fin origin is located only slightly in advance of the dorsal fin, the caudal peduncle is deep and the caudal-fin lobes considerably shorter than the peduncle. Continued discovery of new taxa within the “Lower Guinea Clade” of Mormyridae highlights the incompleteness of our knowledge of fish diversity in West-Central Africa. We present a revised key to the mormyrid genera of Lower Guinea.     

Three new species of Elassoneuria (Ephemeroptera: Oligoneuriidae) from tropical Africa

Three new species of Elassoneuria are described, E.disneyi from the Cameroons, and E.grandis and E.kidahi from Tanzania. The taxonomy of the nymphs is discussed, and E.congolana Navas is redescribed.     

Three new species of Justicia sect. Justicia (Acanthaceae) from tropical Africa

Three new species of Justicia sect. Justicia (Acanthaceae) are described: Justicia regis from Kenya, Justicia acutifolia from Tanzania, and Justicia telloensis from Cameroun.     

Comments on controversial tick (Acari: Ixodida) species names and species described or resurrected from 2003 to 2008

There are numerous discrepancies in recent published lists of the ticks of the world. Here we review the controversial names, presenting evidence for or against their validity and excluding some altogether. We also address spelling errors and present a list of 17 species described or resurrected during the years 2003–2008. Two new and two resurrected species of the sciaenid genusJohnius (Johnius) from the West Pacific

Two new species of the sciaenid genusJohnius (Johnius) are described:J. trewavasae from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore, differs from all other congeners in having 24–27 dorsal soft rays, 5–6 scales above and 7–10 scales below the lateral line, 6–8 obtuse lower gill rakers, the last pleural rib on the 11th vertebra, and a shorter lower jaw (33.8–38.4% HL);J. latifrons from Thailand and Java is characterized by 25–29 dorsal soft rays, 7–9 scales above and 11–14 scales below the lateral line, 7–9 obtuse lower gill rakers, a wide interorbital width (26.1–30.6% HL), a small eye (16.7–26.4% HL), and a short, second anal spine (25.9–37.1% HL). Two related species,J. heterolepis Bleeker from “Suriname” andJ. cantori Bleeker from Malaya, are resurrected as valid West Pacific species of Johnius (Johnius).

Four new species of Chlorophyrum from tropical Africa are described: C. graniticola from Zimbabwe, C. minor and C. perfoliatum from Zambia, and C. velutirzum from Malawi, Tanzania, Zambia and Zaire.     

A new species of Raphionacme (Periplocaceae) from north-east Africa

VENTER, H.J. T. & GILBERT, M. C, 1989. A new species of Raphionacme (Periplocaceae) from north-east Africa. A new species of Raphionacme from north-cast Africa is described. It is recognized by the puberulous lanceolate and wavy leaves, the purple corolla lobes, (he simple free filiform corona lobes, the massive laterally broadened stamina! filaments and the position of the gynoslcgium in the corolla mouth. The new species resembles R. michelii de Wild, to a certain extent. Their coronas and stamens are alike in structure and implantation. However, they differ with regard to the corolla structure and the relative position of the gynostegium in the flower, and the length of the pedicels.     

Three new species of Cuphea (Lythraceae) from Mexico

Three new species of Etlingera (Zingiberaceae) from Borneo

Three new species from northern Borneo are described: Etlingera rubromarginata from Sarawak, Brunei and Sabah; E. belalongensis presently only known from the Temburong District of Brunei; and E. corrugata presently only known from Danum Valley, Sabah.     

Three new species of Gasteranthus (Gesneriaceae) from Ecuador

The gesneriad flora of the Reserva Río Guajalito, Province of Pichincha, and Bosque Protector Otonga, Province of Cotopaxi, Ecuador have been investigated. Three new species,Gasteranthus aurantiacus M. Freiberg,G. atrolimbus M. Freiberg, andG. acuticarinatus M. Freiberg, are described and illustrated in preparation for a contribution for the Gesneriaceae in the Flora of Ecuador. While bothG. acuticarinatus andG. atrolimbus are characterized by a dorsal keel on a tubular, pink to wine-red corolla, the infundibulate, bright orange-colored corolla ofG. aurantiacus has a rather wide opening and a large limb.     

Three new species of Hiptage (Malpighiaceae) from Thailand

Three new species, Hiptage calcicola, H. gracilis , and H. monopteryx are described. A key to the species of Hiptage found in Thailand is provided.
