Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is present in the adrenal medulla, in sympathetic neurons as well as in the circulation. This peptide not only exerts a direct vasoconstrictor effect, but also potentiates the vasoconstriction evoked by norepinephrine and sympathetic nerve stimulation. The vasconstrictor effect of norepinephrine is also enhanced by salt loading and reduced by salt depletion. The purpose of this study was therefore to assess whether there exists a relationship between dietary sodium intake and the levels of circulating NPY. Uninephrectomized normotensive rats were maintained for 3 weeks either on a low, a regular or a high sodium intake. On the day of the experiment, plasma levels of NPY and catecholamines were measured in the unanesthetized animals. There was no significant difference in plasma norepinephrine and epinephrine levels between the 3 groups of rats. Plasma NPY levels were the lowest (65.4 ± 8.8 fmol/ml, n=10, Mean ± SEM) in salt-restricted and the highest (151.2 ± 25 fmol/ml, n=14, p < 0.02) in salt-loaded animals. Intermediate values were obtained in rats kept on a regular sodium intake (117.6 ± 20.1 fmol/ml). These findings are therefore compatible with the hypothesis that sodium balance might to some extent influence blood pressure regulation via changes in circulating NPY levels which in turn modify blood pressure responsiveness.  相似文献

The use of calcium supplements to prevent postmenopausal bone loss and hence osteoporosis is widespread, but the evidence for their efficacy, either alone or in combination with other treatments, is contradictory. Skeletal measurements and dietary intake of calcium were determined in 59 healthy postmenopausal women, most of whom were within five years of the menopause. No correlation was found between current intake of calcium and either total calcium in the body or the density of trabecular or cortical bone in the forearm or vertebral trabecular bone. Dietary intake of calcium did not influence the rate of postmenopausal bone loss in the 54 women who completed 12 months of active or placebo treatment. Even when extremes of calcium intake were examined no difference was found in bone measurements between the women with the highest and lowest intakes. The results of this study suggest that the bone density of women in the early menopause is not influenced by current dietary intake of calcium.  相似文献

The influence of growth and development temperature on the relative tolerance of photosynthetic tissue to high light stress at chilling temperatures was investigated. Two tuber-bearing potato species, Solanum tuberosum L. cv Red Pontiac and Solanum commersonii were grown for 4 weeks, at either 12 or 24°C with 12 hours of about 375 micromoles per second per square meter of photosynthetically active radiation. Paired leaf discs were cut from directly across the midvein of leaflets of comparable developmental stage and light environment from each species at each growth temperature treatment. One disc of each pair was exposed to 1°C and about 1000 micromoles per second per square meter photosynthetically active radiation for 4 hours, and the other disc was held at 1°C in total darkness for the same duration. Photosynthetic tissue of S. tuberosum, developed at 12°C, was much more tolerant to high light and low temperature stress than tissue developed under 24°C conditions. Following the high light treatment, 24°C-grown S. tuberosum tissue demonstrated light-limited and light-saturated rates that were approximately 50% of their paired dark controls. In contrast, the 12°C-grown tissue from S. tuberosum that was subjected to the light stress showed only a 18 and 6% reduction in light-limited and light-saturated rates of photosynthetic oxygen evolution, respectively. Tissue from 24°C-grown S. commersonii was much less sensitive to the light stress than was tissue from S. tuberosum grown under the same conditions. The results presented here demonstrate that: (a) acclimation of S. tuberosum to lower temperature growth conditions with a constant light environment, results in the increased capacity of photosynthetic tissue to tolerate high light stress at chilling temperature and (b) following growth and development at relatively high temperatures S. commersonii, a frost- and heat-tolerant wild species, has a much greater tolerance to the high light stress at chilling temperature than does S. tuberosum cv Red Pontiac, a frost-sensitive cultivated species.  相似文献

Objectives: This study examined the effects of nitrate tolerance (NT) on myocardial ischemia reperfusion (MI/R) injury and elucidated the potential mechanisms involved. Furthermore, the effects of GSH on postischemic myocardial apoptosis in NT rats were investigated. Methods and results: Male Sprague–Dawley rats were randomized to receive nitroglycerin (60 μg/kg/h) or saline for 12 h followed by 40 min of MI and 4 h of reperfusion. Myocardial apoptosis, infarct size, nitrotyrosine formation, plasma CK and LDH activity, and cardiac function were determined. MI/R resulted in significant apoptotic cell death, which was further increased in animals with NT. In addition, NT further increased plasma CK and LDH activity, enlarged infarct size, and impaired cardiac functional recovery after ischemia. Myocardial nitrotyrosine, a footprint for cytotoxic reactive nitrogen species formation, was further enhanced in the NT heart after MI/R. Treatment of NT animals with exogenous GSH inhibited nitrotyrosine formation, reduced apoptosis, decreased infarct size, and improved cardiac functional recovery. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that nitrate tolerance markedly enhances MI/R injury and that increased peroxynitrite formation likely plays a role in this pathologic process. In addition, our results suggest that GSH could decrease peroxynitrite formation and reduce MI/R injury in nitrate tolerant hearts.  相似文献

High-salt diets elevate circulating Na+ pump inhibitors, vascular resistance, and blood pressure. Ouabain induces a form of hypertension mediated via the alpha2-Na+ pump isoform and the calcium influx mode of the vascular sodium calcium exchanger (NCX). Whereas elevated levels of an endogenous ouabain (EO) and NCX have been implicated in salt-sensitive hypertension, acute changes in sodium balance do not affect plasma EO. This study investigated the impact of longer-term alterations in sodium balance on the circulating levels and renal clearance of EO in normal humans. Thirteen normal men consumed a normal diet, high-salt diet, and hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), each for 5-day periods to alter sodium balance. EO and other humoral and urinary variables were determined daily. On a normal diet, urinary sodium excretion (140 +/- 16 meq/day), plasma EO (0.43 +/- 0.08 nmol/l) and urinary EO excretion (1.04 +/- 0.13 nmol/day) were at steady state. On the 3rd day of a high-salt diet, urine sodium excretion (315 +/- 28 meq/day), plasma EO (5.8 +/- 2.2 nmol/l), and the urinary EO excretion (1.69 +/- 0.27 nmol/day) were significantly increased, while plasma renin activity and aldosterone levels were suppressed. The salt-evoked increase in plasma EO was greater in older individuals, in subjects whose baseline circulating EO was higher, and in those with low renal clearance. During HCTZ, body weight decreased and plasma renin activity, aldosterone, and EO (1.71 +/- 0.77 nmol/l) rose, while urinary EO excretion remained within the normal range (1.44 +/- 0.31 nmol/day). Blood pressure fell in one subject during HCTZ. HPLC of the plasma extracts showed one primary peak of EO immunoreactivity with a retention time equivalent to ouabain. High-salt diets and HCTZ raise plasma EO by stimulating EO secretion, and a J-shaped curve relates sodium balance and EO in healthy men. Under normal dietary conditions, approximately 98% of the filtered load of EO is reabsorbed by the kidney, and differences in the circulating levels of EO are strongly influenced by secretion and urinary excretion of EO. The dramatic impact of high-salt diets on plasma EO is consistent with its proposed role as a humoral vasoconstrictor that links salt intake with vascular function in hypertension.  相似文献

Stress has many biological effects on human daily life. In the present study, dietary protein intake was correlated with the investigated stress levels of nurses and housewives of the targeted urban population. Age group ranged from 30 to 45 years and both the groups belonged to middle socioeconomic status. After calculations of environmental, psychological and physiological stresses, it was observed that the levels of stress in housewives were significantly higher than those of nurses. Recommended dietary allowances, RDA and actual protein intakes, API were also compared in both the groups. The found protein intake was less in housewives as compared to that of nurses.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Carotenoids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease through their antioxidant properties, but the results of epidemiological studies are controversial. We analysed the relation between the intake of selected carotenoids and retinol and risk of acute myocardial infarction (AMI). METHODS: A case-control study was conducted in Milan, Italy, in 1995-2003. Cases were 760 patients with nonfatal AMI, and controls 682 patients admitted to hospital. RESULTS: The risk of AMI decreased with increasing intake of alpha-carotene (odds ratios, OR = 0.71, 95% confidence intervals, CI 0.51-0.98, for the highest vs the lowest quartile of intake), beta-carotene (OR = 0.71, 95% CI 0.50-1.01) and beta-criptoxanthin (OR = 0.64, 95% CI 0.46-0.88). No associations emerged for total carotenoids, lycopene, lutein plus zeaxanthin and retinol. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests a weak protective effect of alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and beta-criptoxanthin on the risk of AMI. It also indicates that total carotenoids, lycopene, lutein plus zeaxanthin and retinol were not related to the risk of the disease.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe association between zinc intake and the risk of kidney stones remains controversial. We examined the associations between dietary zinc intake, supplemental zinc intake and serum zinc levels and the prevalence of kidney stones in adults.MethodsAdult participants from the 2007–2016 NHANES were included. Restricted cubic splines were adopted to assess the dose-response relationships.ResultsDietary zinc intake was linearly associated with the prevalence of kidney stones (Pfor non-linearity = 0.50), and the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of kidney stones were 0.75 (0.51–1.04) for 10 mg/day, 0.65 (0.39-0.97) for 20 mg/day, 0.53 (0.30-0.94) for 30 mg/day and 0.45 (0.22-0.95) for 40 mg/day. The linear relationship was also observed among women and overweight/obese individuals. No association was found between supplemental zinc intake and the prevalence of kidney stones. A non-linear relationship was found between serum zinc levels and the prevalence of kidney stones (Pfor non-linearity = 0.02), and the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) of kidney stones were 0.52 (0.33-0.82) for 70 ug/dL, 0.43 (0.24-0.77) for 90 ug/dL, 0.56 (0.32-0.98) for 110 ug/dL and 0.77 (0.37–1.62) for 130 ug/dL. The non-linear relationship was also observed among men and overweight/obese individuals.ConclusionsDietary zinc intake and serum zinc levels were inversely associated with the prevalence of kidney stones in adults, and there may be effect modification by participant sex and body mass index. The present analysis is limited in its ability to establish causality.  相似文献

Catalases are the most important enzymatic systems used to degrade hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into water and oxygen, thereby lowering intracellular hydrogen peroxide levels. Entomopathogenic fungi display increased catalase activity during germination and growth, which is necessary to counteract the hyperoxidant state produced by oxidative metabolism. We studied the influence of five different hydrocarbons on catalase production by Lecanicillium muscarium to determine the importance of catalase induction in fungal germination, stress tolerance and virulence. Conidia produced by colonies grown on different hydrocarbons showed higher rates of catalase activity compared to the control and the catalase activity of conidia produced on n-octacosane was three times higher than the activity of the control. This increase in catalase activity was accompanied by a higher level of resistance to exogenous hydrogen peroxide and a reduction in the germination time. Our study has helped to identify that increased catalase activity improves the germination and tolerance to different antioxidant stress response of L. muscarium.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper provides a general review of the nature of tolerance to alcohol and describes specific studies designed to evaluate genetic influences on the acquisition of tolerance. Both environmental and genetic factors are involved in acquisition of either acute or chronic tolerance. Studies showing inbred strain differences in rates of acquisition of tolerance in mice are prima facie evidence for genetic influences, but the possible interactions between genes and environmental factors have not been investigated. Potential relationship between acutely and chronically acquired tolerance to alcohol is discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Depressive disorders are partly caused by chronic inflammation through the kynurenine (KYN) pathway. Preventive intervention using anti-inflammatory reagents may be beneficial for alleviating the risk of depression. In this study, we focused on the Japanese local citrus plant, Citrus tumida hort. ex Tanaka (C. tumida; CT), which contains flavonoids such as hesperidin that have anti-inflammatory actions. The dietary intake of 5% immature peels of CT fruits slightly increased stress resilience in a subchronic and mild social defeat (sCSDS) model in mice. Moreover, the dietary intake of 0.1% hesperidin significantly increased stress resilience and suppressed KYN levels in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex in these mice. In addition, KYN levels in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex were significantly correlated with the susceptibility to stress. In conclusion, these results suggest that dietary hesperidin increases stress resilience by suppressing the augmentation of KYN signaling under sCSDS.  相似文献
