This study investigated the influence of feeding frequency on the activities of important degradative enzymes and potentially rate-limiting enzymes in glycolysis and gluconeogenesis in the liver and white epaxial muscle of Macquaria ambigua . Adult animals were either fed daily to satiety (fed), deprived of food for up to 180 days (starved), or starved for 150 days then fed daily to satiety for 30 days (starved/fed). The activities of lipolytic, glycogenolytic and glycolytic enzymes in the livers of starved fish were maintained as long as liver energy stores were available, but became significantly reduced following their exhaustion indicating a decline in metabolism in response to prolonged starvation. The response of epaxial muscle metabolism to changes in food availability was different to that of the liver, as no significant change in the activities of muscle lipolytic or glycogenolytic enzymes were observed in response to starvation. Muscle tissue metabolism was reduced after 60–90 days of starvation, but then returned to prestarvation levels.  相似文献

The diet of adult females of the parasitoid Aphytis melinus DeBach (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) includes host insects and sugar-rich foods such as nectar and honeydew. We compared the contributions of host feeding to longevity and fecundity in A. melinus females in the presence and in the absence of honey meals. First, we assessed the longevity of females that were not allowed to oviposit. While the longevity of females fed honey was significantly increased by host feeding (median ages were 30.5 days for host-fed females and 17 days for females not allowed to host feed), the lifespan of parasitoids not fed honey did not exceed 3 days for any individual and there was no effect of host feeding on longevity in this group. In the second set of experiments, we assessed the fecundity and longevity of females allowed to oviposit. We conducted two experiments, one in which honey was continuously available, and one in which honey was not available. In both experiments, daily observations were made of females that were either allowed to host feed or manually prevented from host feeding. In the presence of honey, host feeding significantly increased both fecundity and longevity, and in the absence of honey, parasitoids died within 2 days and host feeding had no significant effect on either fecundity or longevity. The lifetime fecundity of females fed honey but not hosts exceeded the initial egg complement by 60% on average. Approximately one host per day was used for host feeding whether honey was supplied or not, and each host-feeding meal contributed approximately 3.9 eggs to the lifetime fecundity of honey-fed females. In the last experiment, we compared the rate of egg resorption over a 36-h period in A. melinus females that were deprived of hosts and either fed honey or starved. While no egg resorption was detected in honey-fed females over this time period, starved females resorbed approximately 9 eggs. Thus, the availability of a sugar-rich food interacts strongly with host feeding in influencing longevity and fecundity and has a strong direct effect on egg resorption.  相似文献

Activity (to food, water and shelter) and resource allocation (mass budget, and size of various body components) were examined in populations of adult Periplaneta americana subjected to periods of starvation or sugar feeding. Following 13 days of starvation, roaches ate 5 times their normal daily ration and feeding required about 20 days to return to pre-starvation levels. When sucrose was substituted for the usual dog-food diet for 13 days, there was also a large increase in feeding initially. When the dog food was re-established, however, there was very little feeding for about one week. Although reproduction was markedly curtailed by starvation, females fed sucrose continued reproducing for at least 59 days. The results suggested that the roaches were mainly energy limited. Although the consumption of roaches was strongly affected by reserve depletion, eating was a small component of the time budget, and overall activity was relatively unchanged by starvation or sugar-feeding. There was a slight decrease in activity during starvation, but the circadian pattern remained unchanged. Females carrying oöthecae were highly active and were apparently attracted to food (even though they ate little). Thus the activity of the population was dominated by circadian rhythmicity and the reproductive cycle.  相似文献

An immunological approach has been used to assess the effects of starvation and subsequent feeding upon the synthesis of neurosecretory protein in adult male Locusta migratoria. Starvation (for 5 days) did not reduce the incorporation of radioactive cystine into neurosecretory protein. However, the rate of neurosecretory transport in starved insects was approximately half that in normal fed insects.Within 1 hr after the start of feeding the rate of neurosecretory protein synthesis more than doubled and the rate at which newly synthesized protein was transported to the CC increased approximately three-fold. The incorporation of cystine into specific (i.e. neurosecretory) protein was always higher, even in starved insects, than into the non-specific proteins (i.e. proteins other than those from the A-cells) of the brain. This difference was maximal at 4 hr after feeding when the incorporation into specific protein was more than 5 times that into non-specific protein.  相似文献

1. Adult feeding strongly increases longevity and fecundity in parasitic wasps. Searching for food resources involves costs; therefore, it is advantageous to be able to feed on the breeding substrate.
2. Cohorts of females of four drosophilid parasitoid species were assigned to different food treatments including starvation. Fat contents were measured and compared after 5 days. In this way the nutritional value of breeding substrates to females could be expressed in terms of energy reserves.
3. Three of the four species tested fed on natural breeding substrates. A fourth species did not produce evidence of such feeding. However, this species fed on honey when fat reserves were low.
4. Feeding is related to: (i) the species' natural breeding substrate, (ii) the energy allocation and lifetime expectancy of the female, and (iii) time of the season.
5. Because feeding strongly influences longevity and fecundity, it is argued that the different feeding strategies found may affect competitive relationships between these drosophilid parasitoid species.  相似文献

The effect of diet on mating behavior and the subsequent effects of diet and mating status on the biosynthesis of juvenile hormone III, basal follicle length, salivary gland size and total body weight were assessed in the ring-legged earwig, Euborellia annulipes (Lucas) (Family Carcinophoridae; subfamily Carcinophorinae) during the first 15 days of adult life (the first gonadotrophic cycle of those fed presumably near-optimal diets of catfood) and again on day 25 (late vitellogenesis of the second gonadotrophic cycle of those fed catfood). Diets of catfood, honey, fructose and total starvation, respectively, imposed on 0-day adult females did not affect sexual receptivity, mating success or duration of mating as assessed on day 7. With the addition of a group of virgin, catfood fed females, we noted that only those females maintained on catfood oviposited within 25 days; enforced virginity virtually abolished oviposition. Total food deprivation of females as well as diets of honey or fructose abolished the cycles in total body weight, basal follicle length, salivary gland size and juvenile hormone production. Thus, starvation decreased the reproductive success of these insects, and carbohydrates only (fructose) or in combination with trace amounts of nutrients and protein (honey) were not sufficient to promote reproduction and associated cycles in this insect. Furthermore, virgins failed to undergo the decreases in salivary gland size that were characteristic of mated females. Among mated, catfood-fed females, the second cycle in juvenile hormone production appeared to be smaller than the first.  相似文献

Synopsis Chronically starved rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) showed a significant fall in liver size, total liver glycogen, liver glycogen concentration and plasma glucose levels. Liver lipid concentration did not differ significantly from controls although total liver lipid reserves fell during the first 40 days of starvation but had partly recovered after 65 days of starvation. Plasma cortisol and T3 levels did not show consistent changes concomitant with food deprivation over the 65 day period of the experiment. However, plasma T4 levels in fish starved for 40 or 65 days were significantly lower than comparably fed animals. The involvement of T4 in intermediate metabolic processes in salmonids is discussed.  相似文献

After a pre-prandial period of starvation or feeding with unlabelled food, 0+ salmon parr (0.8–11.7 g) were fed a test meal of iron particle labelled food and subsequently were again either starved or fed unlabelled food. The quantity of labelled food consumed and the evacuation rate was determined by serial radiographs. In fish of all sizes, pre-prandial starvation causes a larger test meal (as a percentage of body weight) to be consumed when compared to pre-prandially fed fish. In addition, pre-prandial starvation results in relatively larger meals as a percentage of body weight being taken by smaller compared to larger fish. This result was not evident for pre-prandially fed fish. Evacuation rate was unrelated to body size irrespective of feeding history. Post-prandial starvation decreased evacuation rate but this effect was inversely related to the quantity of food consumed. Larger meals were not evacuated differently from smaller meals if feeding occurred post-prandially, irrespective of pre-prandial starvation.  相似文献

To clarify the role of Juvenile hormone (JH) in the induction of oosorption in females of the stink bug Plautia stali Scott (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), the effects of extirpation and implantation of the corpus cardiac‐corpus allatum complex (CC‐CA) are examined in fed and starved adults, respectively. Removal of CC‐CA induces oosorption in fed females, whereas CC‐CA implantation stimulates ovary development in starved females. Transection of the nervous connections between the brain and CC‐CA also exerts a stimulatory effect on ovary development. Uptake of yolk protein by the oocytes, assessed in terms of incorporation of a fluorescence dye, occurs on the day after food deprivation but ceases within 1 day after allatectomy. When females are deprived of food, beginning on day 3 of adult life, and treated with JH III skipped bisepoxide (JHSB3) on the same day, their ovaries develop in a dose‐dependent fashion. Approximately half of the starved females that received JHSB3 application on day 5 undergo oosorption in the terminal oocytes. This indicates that the critical starvation period for oosorption induction is approximately 2 days, and the earlier half of this period may reflect the time required for the brain to detect poor nutritional condition. During the latter half, in response to food deprivation, the brain inhibits JH biosynthesis by the corpus allatum through nervous connections, resulting in a low JH titre, which in turn induces oosorption.  相似文献

Feeding starved adult migratory locusts, Locusta migratoria, caused decreases of hemolymph lipid concentrations and of the percentage of active fat body glycogen phosphorylase which suggested that a molecule(s) from the neurosecretory system or the midgut may have been released to regulate metabolism. Fat body phosphorylase was also inactivated after insects were transferred from 0 to 25 ° C. In adults with elevated hemolymph lipid levels after the injection of small doses of corpus cardiacum extract (CC), feeding did not induce a decrease in hemolymph lipid concentrations. It appears that the processes initiated by feeding could not override the effects of the continued presence of adipokinetic hormone(s) (AKHs) in the hemolymph or their long-term effects. Aqueous, methanolic, or ethanolic extracts of brains or storage lobes (SL) of fed locust CC did not lead to decreases of hemolymph lipid concentrations. Bovine insulin was equally inactive when tested at doses which were previously reported to reduce lipid levels. Fractions of ethanolic brain extracts from 3-day-starved males collected after high-performance size-exclusion chromatography, however, produced hypoglycemic effects in fed males. We studied breeding success, chick growth, parental effort and chick behaviour in two groups of Lesser Black-backed Gulls Larus fuscus whose chicks were provided with additional food until 7 days after hatching or until fledging. These data were compared with those from control pairs which we studied simultaneously to test the hypotheses that food was in short supply during the chick stage at the colony site and that in such circumstances the behaviour of adults and young is mainly responsible for the low success. Pairs whose chicks were fed with additional food until fledging showed a higher fledging success than control pairs (intermediate for pairs of first experimental group). During the first week after hatching, experimental adults of both groups were present together at the territory for longer than control pairs. In adult females of experimental pairs, the length of feeding trips was shorter than in females of control pairs, whilst the rate of chick feeding was more frequent in the experimental broods. After the chicks were 7 days old, differences were significant only for the experimental pairs whose chicks were provided with additional food until fledging. Chicks fed until fledging showed a higher daily mass and wing-length increments and reached a higher fledging mass at an earlier age than both control chicks and chicks which were provided with additional food until day 7. Starvation occurred only in control chicks and in chicks of the first experimental group after we had stopped providing food. When food was in short supply, fledging success of gulls was adversely affected as a result of both starvation (because of the lower feeding rates of chicks) and a higher predation rate (arising from changes in behaviour of both adults and chicks).  相似文献

The conversion of [U-(14)C]glucose into carbon dioxide, cholesterol and fatty acids in liver slices and the activities of ;malic' enzyme, citrate-cleavage enzyme, NADP-linked isocitrate dehydrogenase and hexose monophosphate-shunt dehydrogenases in the soluble fraction of homogenates of liver were measured in chicks that were starved or starved then fed. 2. In newly hatched chicks the incorporation of [U-(14)C]glucose and the activity of ;malic' enzyme did not increase unless the birds were fed. The response to feeding of [U-(14)C]glucose incorporation into fatty acids increased as the starved chicks grew older. 3. Citrate-cleavage enzyme activity increased slowly even when the newly hatched chicks were unfed. On feeding, citrate-cleavage enzyme activity increased at a much faster rate. 4. In normally fed 20-day-old chicks starvation decreased the incorporation of [U-(14)C]glucose into all three end products and depressed the activities of ;malic' enzyme and citrate-cleavage enzyme. Re-feeding increased all of these processes to normal or higher-than-normal levels. 5. In both newly hatched and 20-day-old chicks starvation increased the activity of isocitrate dehydrogenase and feeding or re-feeding decreased it. 6. Very little change in hexose monophosphate-shunt dehydrogenase activity was observed during the dietary manipulations. 7. The results indicate that increased substrate delivery to the liver is the principal stimulus to the increased rate of glucose metabolism observed in newly hatched chicks. The results also suggest that changes in the activities of ;malic' enzyme and citrate-cleavage enzyme are secondary to an increased flow of metabolites through the glucose-to-fatty acid pathway and that the dehydrogenases of the hexose monophosphate shunt play a minor role in NADPH production for fatty acid synthesis.  相似文献

When two-day-old female Leptinotarsa decemlineata were starved, their corpus allatum activity, as measured by the radiochemical in vitro assay, was significantly reduced after 24 hr. Such a reduction was not observed when the nerve connections between the central nervous system and the retrocerebral complex were severed and the beetles starved up to 5 days. In some experiments, the rate of juvenile hormone biosynthesis in vitro, was substantiated by measurement of the juvenile hormone titre in the haemolymph by physico-chemical methods. It is concluded that intact nervous connections between the central nervous system and the corpora allata are essential for restraining the juvenile hormone biosynthesis during the initial stages of starvation.Corpora allata from 1-day starved insects were considerably stimulated in vitro by farnesenic acid indicating that juvenile hormone synthesis is controlled enzymatically at a stage prior to the final two steps in the pathway. However, on day 5 of starvation, rate-limitation may occur after formation of this intermediate, since farnesenic acid stimulation was much less at this time.Corpora allata of adult females newly emerged from the soil were activated within 4 hr regardless of feeding.  相似文献

Effects of water temperature, starvation and photoperiod on otolith increment formation in larval Chinese sucker, Myxocyprinus asiaticus, were examined in this study. The results demonstrated that otolith increments of larvae reared under diel temperature fluctuations were very clear and appeared with a high contrast, while those of larvae raised under constant water temperatures were vague or hard to identify. The increment deposition rates were less than 1.0/day in later stage of starvation period. Also, increment deposition was affected by cyclic regimes of water temperature fluctuations, the number of increments corresponded to the cycle times rather than the exact days larvae experienced. However, varying of feeding frequency and photoperiod did not result in any alterations of daily increment formation. Increment width increased obviously with higher rearing temperatures till several days after yolk absorption. However, the width presented an ontogenetic decline during period of endogenous nutrition and the first several days of exogenous nutrition stage. Starvation decoupled the relationship between somatic growth and otolith growth; otolith kept growing, and increment width of starved larvae was similar to those in fed individuals before 9–20 days old; the divergence of increment width from the fed larvae occurred in later stage of starvation period. It can be concluded that temperature regimes and food levels are the major factors affecting increment formation in terms of clarity, deposition rate and width, while photoperiod and feeding frequency have less influence on it.  相似文献

Compensatory growth is the phase of rapid growth, greater than normal or control growth, which occurs upon adequate refeeding following a period of undernutrition. The effect of feed cycling periods (periods of starvation followed by periods of refeeding), ration level and repetitive feed cycles on the compensatory growth response in rainbow trout were evaluated in two experiments. A feeding cycle of 3 weeks starvation and 3 weeks feeding produced better results in terms of average percentage changes in weight and length, and in specific growth rate, than either 1 week and 1 week or 2 weeks and 2 weeks feed cycles. The fish on the 3 weeks starvation and 3 weeks feeding cycle did as well as, if not better than, the constantly fed controls over one or two complete cycles, though the controls were fed more than twice the amount of feed. Three ration levels were compared using a 3-week starvation and 3-week feeding period. The only effect of increasing ration level was to decrease conversion efficiency, indicating overfeeding. Carcass analysis of moisture, fat, protein and ash showed no significant differences between the controls and an experimental group on a 3 weeks starvation, 3 weeks feeding cycle after one complete cycle. Possible mechanisms underlying the compensatory growth response are discussed.  相似文献
