Summary Three levels of water stress were induced on pole-size ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) to determine the influence of plant moisture stress on oviposition, survival, and growth of two species of pine sawfly (Neodiprion fulviceps and N. autumnalis). It was found that water stress affected oviposition and subsequent egg survival but not larval development or survival. Stress had a negative effect on early season oviposition (N. fulviceps) and a positive effect on late season oviposition (N. autumnalis). Egg hatch was different between species and years and among treatment levels. Larval development, feeding, and survival were not affected by water stress. Overall, the effect of stress was not sufficient to explain population outbreaks of sawflies. Several hypotheses are presented as possible explanations for the observed experimental results.  相似文献

1. The monophagous larch sawfly, Pristiphora erichsonii, requires larch, Larix spp., shoots for oviposition and foliage for larval development. The hypothesis that chronic defoliation reduces shoot availability for adult females, causing shifts in host use within plantations of L. decidua and L. leptolepis , was evaluated over a 3-year period.
2. Larch productivity and sawfly abundance varied six- to 10-fold among individual trees within each plantation. Sawflies concentrated oviposition on the most rapidly growing trees, and had a marginal impact on shoot production. Consequently, sawfly herbivory on individual trees remained relatively constant for 3 years, failing to support the hypothesis that P. erichsonii defoliation causes shifts in host use.
3. Pristiphora erichsonii larval performance varied 20–30% among individual host trees. The oviposition event did not significantly affect larval performance or foliar nutrient content.
4. The relationship between cocoon survival and natural enemy abundance was evaluated among fifteen L. leptolepis trees. Parasites and predators killed over 65% of the 18 315 cocoons sampled. The proportion of cocoons killed by parasitoids declined significantly with P. erichsonii density, while predation rates increased under heavily infested trees. Overall, the proportion of cocoons killed by parasitoids and predators did not vary with sawfly density.
5. Results indicate that components of host vigour, herbivore performance and natural enemy guilds exhibit substantial spatial heterogeneity among trees within plantations of exotic Larix trees. Moreover, individual larch can tolerate repeated oviposition and herbivory without a rapid loss in shoot production. The potential for host plant physiological tolerance to herbivory to interact with natural enemy population dynamics and behaviour so as to stabilize herbivore population patterns is discussed.  相似文献

Insect defoliation events are a major forest disturbance in the boreal forest in Canada. Reconstructing previous events are crucial to understanding natural factors that lead to insect defoliation periods, improving our ability to predict future infestations and increasing the reliability of forest management plans and pest control programs. Researchers have often been limited in their ability to draw accurate conclusions regarding the history of larch sawfly (Pristiphora erichsonii (Hartig)) infestation events in North America. It is well known that floods can affect survival of larch sawfly populations, as well as suppress radial growth of eastern larch (Larix laricina (Du Roi) K. Koch) trees. Eastern larch often inhabits peatlands where high water-table levels can lead to a decrease in tree-ring widths. Water-table level increases result in similar radial-growth patterns to when trees are defoliated by larch sawfly, making accurate diagnoses of larch sawfly events a challenge. This fact becomes more accentuated when non-host species used for standard dendroecological analyses (often black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) Britton) present an opposite relationship to water-table variability, enhancing chances of drawing erroneous conclusions when using program OUTBREAK.This paper introduces a novel case study to advance the understanding of the complex landscapes where these larch sawfly events are taking place. It stresses the necessity of using upland sites less influenced by the hydrological regime to accurately reconstruct larch sawfly defoliation events. We found that where investigations are taking place solely in peatlands or lowlands, and where they are heavily influenced by hydrological conditions, the use of other lines of evidence such as pale rings and long-term hydrological records are crucial to understand the dynamics in the system. In our case study, program OUTBREAK identified five defoliation events in a peatland and upland site; however, hydrological data and pale ring evidence indicated that the last event identified in the peatland site by the host/non-host analysis was confounded by hydrological growth suppression.  相似文献

Since its introduction into southern Florida at the beginning of this century, the Australian paperbark tree,Melaleuca quinquenervia (Cav.) S. T. Blake, has become a major economic and environmental pest. A project to develop biological control agents for this tree in Australia began in 1986. Among a number of potential agents, a defoliating sawfly,Lophyrotoma zonalis (Rohwer) (Hymenoptera: Pergidae), was selected for further study. The larvae of this sawfly are conspicuous defoliators ofMelaleuca trees in northern Queensland. We collected these sawflies from Cairns to Mackay in northern Queensland, and they are also known from the Northern Territory and New Guinea. The life-cycle from egg to adult takes about 12 weeks. The egg, larval and pupal stages are parasitized by dipteran and hymenopteran parasites. We conducted 2234 larval no-choice feeding tests on 46 plant species from 20 families. Although feeding occurred on 35 of these plant species,M. quinquenervia and its close relative,M. leucadendra (L.) L., were preferred. In oviposition tests, larvae only emerged from egg cases laid onM. quinquenervia andM. leucadendra. Our extensive field surveys of nearly 70 tree species foundL. zonalis eggs and larvae only on several closely relatedMelaleuca species. The potential effectiveness of this sawfly as a biocontrol agent is discussed and estimated using the Goeden-Harris scoring system. Quarantine studies of this insect began in Florida in early 1994.  相似文献

We studied the relationship between variation in age and shoot characteristics of the host plant Salix exigua Nuttall (coyote or sandbar willow) and the attack and survival of Euura sp. (an unnamed leaf-midrib galling sawfly). Variation in shoot characteristics resulted from reduced growth as willow ramets aged. Mean shoot length per ramet and mean longest leaf length per shoot decreased by 95% and 50% respectively between 1- and 9-year-old willow ramets. All measured shoot characteristics-shoot length, longest leaf length, number of leaves per shoot, and mean internode length-were significantly negatively correlated with ramet age (r 2 ranged from –0.23 to –0.41). Correlations between shoot characteristics were highly positive, indicating that plants also grew in a strongly integrated fashion (r 2 ranged from 0.54 to 0.85). Four hypotheses were examined to explain sawfly attack patterns. The host-plant hypothesis was supported in explaining enhanced larval sawfly survival through reduced plant resistance. As willow ramets aged, the probability of Euura sp. attack decreased over 10-fold, from 0.315 on 1-year-old ramets to 0.024 on 2- to 9-year-old ramets. As shoot length increased, the probability of sawfly attack increased over 100-fold, from 0.007 on shoots <100 mm, to 0.800 on shoots in the 1001–1100 mm shoot length class. These attack patterns occurred even though 1-year-old ramets and shoots >500 mm each represented less than 2% of the total shoots available for oviposition. Host plant induced mortality of the egg/early instar stage decreased by 50% on longer leaves and was the most important factor determining survival differences between vigorous and non-vigorous hosts. Sawfly attack was not determined by the resource distribution hypothesis. Although shoots <200 mm contained 82% of the total leaves available, they contained only 43% of the galls initiated. The attack pattern also was not explained by the gall volume hypothesis. Although gall volume increased on longer shoots, there was no significant variation in mid or late instar mortality over shoot length, as would be expected if food resources within smaller galls were limited. The natural enemy attack hypothesis could not explain the pattern of oviposition since predation was greater on longer shoots and leaves. In addition, larval survival was related to oviposition behavior. Due to a 69% reduction in late instar death and an 83% reduction in parasitism, survival of progeny in galls initiated close to the petiole base was 2.8 times greater than in galls initiated near the leaf tip. A 75% reduction in gall volume over this range of gall positions may account for the observed increases in late instar mortality and parasitism.  相似文献

Willows are often attacked by both herbivorous insects and rust fungi. Little is known about interactions between these two willow enemies. We studied whether feeding and oviposition behavior of the willow leaf beetle Plagiodera versicolora upon the willow hybrid Salix x cuspidata is affected when the rust fungus Melampsora allii-fragilis has attacked the plant. Laboratory bioassays revealed that adult willow leaf beetles significantly avoided feeding and oviposition on rust-infected leaves when compared to healthy leaves. Further bioassays aimed to elucidate the temporal and spatial scale of effects of rust infection on feeding behavior of adults. While infected parts of leaves were avoided at all times past infection tested (8, 12, and 16 days), symptom-free parts of infected leaves were only avoided 16 days past infection. Systemic effects extended only one leaf position up and two leaf positions down from the infection site.  相似文献

The achlorophyllousMonotropastrum globosum was found growing in aFagus crenata forest. Samples ofM. globosum and their interpenetrating root systems ofF. crenata were collected to investigate the mycorrhizal association.Monotropastrum globosum mycorrhizae showed thick sheaths, invasion of the epidermal cells by fungal pegs, and Hartig nets, which reached only the first layer of cortical cells. TheF. crenata mycorrhizae also showed thick sheaths, but Hartig nets penetrated deep into the cortex and intracellular hypha were seen in the outer cortical cells. The similarities observerd in the mantle inner plan view and emanating hypha suggest that both mycorrhizae are formed by the same fungus.  相似文献

Rapidly induced responses can alter host plant suitability for insect growth and survival. The effects of defoliation on the suitability of potted 5-year-old red pine, Pinus resinosa Ait., for the sawfly Neodiprion sertifer (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae), were measured in two experiments. In the first, overall larval growth rate increased on seedlings within 8 days of low (<15%) defoliation. Suitability varied among larval age groups: defoliation increased the performance of older larvae, but not that of young larvae. In the second experiment, larval survival and weight varied non-linearly with defoliation intensity 8 weeks after treatment. Similar responses were observed following artificial and natural defoliation, and on early- and late-season seedlings. These results suggest that some evergreen conifers can respond rapidly to defoliation injury, and that herbivores may simultaneously acclimate to the induced response as they develop. The relative importance of induced response rates to plant-insect interactions is discussed.  相似文献

Summary Various in vitro synthesis techniques with Picea abies and two Hebeloma species showed that structures of the mantle and Hartig net of synthesized ectomycorrhizae within the given two fungus species are stable. However, thickness of mantle, and penetration depth and number of hyphal cell rows between cortical cells of the Hartig net are dependent on techniques and substrates. Porous glass balls as substrate in the Erlenmeyer technique seem to suppress or delay mantle and Hartig net formation. With the other techniques (growth pouch, open cuvette, Erlenmeyer with a vermiculite-peat moss mixture) development of the mantle is simultaneous with or shortly in advance of Hartig net formation. The ectomycorrhizae of the two tested Hebeloma species are similar and cannot be morphologically differentiated by the in vitro techniques used.  相似文献

Summary The grey alder compensates leaf area losses due to insect grazing by continuously producing new leaves throughout the vegetative period. Different degrees of defoliation were attained experimentally by a controlled release of the oligophagous beetle Agelastica alni on arbitrarily selected trees from a homogenous population of young alders. The reduction in leaf area per tree significantly influenced the density of leaf trichomes, assessed 10–30 days later, on newly sprouting leaves only. Cross-correlations between leaf area reduction and trichome density were strongest for leaves which completed unfolding 14–21 days after damage. Dualchoice assays suggested a negative influence of trichomes on oviposition rate of A. alni. Removal of trichomes by shaving demonstrated the highly significant effect of trichomes on feeding behavior of adults and larvae in dual-choice assays. The role of the induced increase in trichome density as a possible short-term defense reaction against herbivorous insects is discussed.  相似文献

The stem-galling sawfly Euura lasiolepisuses one or more plant wound compounds resulting from oviposition scars as cues in host discrimination (avoiding sites occupied by conspecifics). Four experiments were conducted to test hypotheses about how Euurapartitions resources. Experiment 1 demonstrated that Euuraavoids ovipositing on nodes with scars from previous ovipositions. Experiment 2 showed no evidence that the sawfly uses oviposition-deterring pheromones and indicated there is a time lag following oviposition before the oviposition scar becomes a deterrent. Experiment 3 showed that sawflies avoid artificially formed scars, demonstrating that a plant cue alone can lead to host discrimination. Experiment 4 showed that visual or tactile cues are not necessary for host discrimination and indicated that a plant wound compound functions as an oviposition deterrent. Both experimental results and field surveys showed that Euuraoviposition scars were more uniformly distributed than expected if sawflies were ignoring previous ovipositions.  相似文献

Summary The differentiation of the endodermis of mycorrhizal roots of Picea abies and Larix decidua was investigated by means of light and transmission electron microscopy and with fluorescence techniques. The initiation and differentiation of the Hartig net were recorded. Differences between the two tree species were found, as were differences between the two tree species and angiosperms. The Casparian band developed immediately after the origin of endodermal cells from the meristem in mycorrhizae of both tree species. In L. decidua only the primary endodermis was present in most mycorrhizal laterals. The secondary structure of the endodermis was restricted to main roots and proximal parts of larch mycorrhizae. In P. abies mycorrhizae, however, the secondary stage of the endodermis developed soon after the primary endodermis and was characterized by regular alternation of short, active passage cells and elongated, rapidly degenerating cells, the inner surface of which was covered by a thick suberin layer. Hartig net development started in P. abies short roots only after the differentiation of endodermis into the secondary stage, whereas in L. decidua, the Hartig net was already initiated at the primary endodermal stage. Differences were specific for tree species.  相似文献

Larvae of the cedar web-spinning sawfly, Cephalcia tannourinensis Chevin (Hymenoptera: Pamphiliidae), infected with a white fungus were collected from the Tannourine-Hadath El-Jebbeh cedar forest. Macro- and micro-morphological data based on the examination of colonies, conidiophores, and conidial shape of the fungus suggested a Beauveria species. Sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer regions of the isolated fungus showed that it is most closely related to isolates of B. bassiana Clade C. The present study showed that the isolated B. bassiana is a naturally occurring entomopathogenic fungus parasitizing the larvae of C. tannourinensis in Lebanon. Laboratory bioassays showed that B. bassiana caused high mortality of eggs and larvae. The infected eggs turned brownish in color, while larvae of the first instar ceased feeding and showed immobility and rigidity within 5 days and before sporulating conidial mat appeared on their cuticle. Second and third larval instars took longer time to show fungal sporulation: mortalities ranged between 85 and 100% within 7 days when treated with different conidial concentrations. The efficacy of control of C. tannourinensis using B. bassiana was higher or equal to the reference insect growth regulator, diflubenzuron, suggesting the possibility of its success as a biological control agent.  相似文献

Summary Adults of Phytomyza ilicicola (Diptera: Agromyzidae), a univoltine specialist leafminer, emerge in close synchrony with leaf flush of American holly and feed on and oviposit in soft, partially expanded leaves. Early spring defoliation, such as commonly results from freezing injury to young shoots, is followed several weeks later by a second flush of young leaves from lateral buds. We simulated this phenomenon by manually defoliating whole small trees and individual shoots of large trees to test the hypothesis that freezing injury can encourage leafminer outbreaks by inducing an abundance of soft, protein rich young leaves late in the adult activity period, when availability of vulnerable leaves becomes limited. Defoliation of small trees one or two weeks after bud break resulted in six- to 13-fold increases in the incidence of feeding punctures and larval mines on second flush leaves as compared with densities on original young leaves of control trees. Similarly, we induced significant increases in feeding punctures and larval mines on second flush leaves of individual defoliated shoots, although leaves that did not open until after the flight period escaped this injury. These observations underscore the capability of adult female P. ilicicola to locate and exploit a small number of phenologically available leaves among many hundreds of older leaves on the same tree. By altering the phenology of leaf flush, certain kinds of environmental stress may predispose perennial plants to outbreaks of early season folivores that restrict their feeding or oviposition to very young leaves.  相似文献

Summary Responses to clipping and bison grazing in different environmental contexts were examined in two perennial grass species, Andropogon gerardii and Panicum virgatum, on the Konza Prairie in northeastern Kansas. Grazed tillers had lower relative growth rates (RGR) than clipped tillers following defoliation but this difference was transient and final biomass was not affected by mode of defoliation. Grazed tillers of both species had higher RGR throughout the season than ungrazed tillers, resulting in exact compensation for tissue lost to defoliation. However, A. gerardii tillers which had been grazed repeatedly the previous year (1988) had reduced relative growth rates, tiller biomass and tiller survival in 1989. This suggests that the short-term increase in aboveground relative growth rates after defoliation had a cost to future plant growth and tiller survival. In general, the two species had similar responses to defoliation but their responses were altered differentially by fire. The increase in RGR following defoliation of A. gerardii was relatively greater on unburned than burned prairie, and was influenced by topographic position. P. virgatum responses to defoliation were similar in burned and unburned prairie. Thus grazing, fire, and topographical position all interact to influence tiller growth dynamics and these two species respond differently to the fire and grazing interaction. In addition, fire may interact with grazing pattern to influence a plants' grazing history and thus its long-term performance.  相似文献

The larch bud-moth cycle has been observed in the sub-alpine larch-cembran pine forests 16 times since 1850. Infestation is easily recognized by the characteristic red-brown discoloration of the larch crowns due to the wasteful feeding of the bud moth larvae. The heaviest defoliation recurs at intervals of 8.47±0.27 (SE) years, and the larval density per kilogram of larch branches varies more than 10000-fold over four or five generations. The basic regulatory mechanism for this cycle is the induced change in food quality for the two or more subsequent larval generations. Defoliation functions as a negative feedback mechanism acting on larval density. In 1989 local discoloration in the Upper Engadine valley was observed in the usual first focus. In 1990 and 1991, however, instead of the expected widespread defoliation damage, larval densities decreased drastically. Based on extensive field data collected from 1961 to 1991 on the development and the survival of the bud moth (Zeiraphera diniana Gn.) and the phenology of the host, Larix decidua L., this paper shows the effect of weather on survival in the egg stage and on the coincidence of larval hatching with the sprouting of the larch. It is shown that the winter and spring weather conditions in 1989–1991 were conducive to unusually high egg mortality. Since these conditions occurred in three successive generations, population growth was effectively reduced and the cycle collapsed prematurely. Thus the rather persistent cyclicity of the larch-larch bud-moth system was disturbed by weather conditions with a very low probability of occurrence, but due to the inherent high resilience of the system, the next population peak with visible defoliation is expected to occur 1996/1997, provided that the weather conditions return to the climatic standard.  相似文献

Preference studies of the white-backed planthopper, Sogatella furcifera (Horvath) (Delphacidae: Homoptera) (WBPH) for different growth stages of rice, Oryza sativa L., indicated that WBPH selected its preferred variety for feeding by alighting on the plant and feeding briefly, tasting the plant. Differential preference for shelter, food or oviposition by WBPH were observed for different rice varieties and for different stages of a variety. With the advancement of plant age, rice varieties became more unsuitable for feeding and a process progressing more rapidly in resistant varieties. Most of the resistant varieties viz. Pundia, Landi Sarakanti and Ptb-33, unsuitable for shelter and feeding were usually not preferred for oviposition. However, the tolerant variety Mahia bankoi, though suitable for shelter and feeding was also not preferred for oviposition. Therefore, when screening varieties by only measuring feeding preference sources having tolerance mechanisms of resistance may be overlooked.  相似文献

Summary Both mechanical damage to mountain birch foliage and rearing of moth larvae on the trees reduced the growth of Epirrita autumnata larvae reared on these trees in the following year. The effects of physical damage and some other cues from insects were additive. On bird cherry the performance of Epirrita larvae was equal on untreated trees and on trees artificially defoliated in the previous year, but larval growth was reduced on previously insect-damaged branches. With mountain ash just physical damage per se reduced the performance of Epirrita larvae. On Salix phylicifolia there were no significant differences in the growth or survival of Epirrita on untreated control bushes and on bushes with partial larval damage during the previous year. Among untreated control trees the growth and survivorship of Epirrita were higher on fast-growing willow and bird cherry than on the slow-growing mountain birch. Mountain birch and mountain ash, the two deciduous tree species adapted to nutrient-poor soils, showed delayed inducible resistance triggered by defoliation (artificial or insect-made). This supports the hypothesis that delayed inducible resistance may be a passive response due to nutrient-stress caused by defoliation. On the other hand, the additional increase in the resistance of mountain birch triggered by specific cues from insects suggests that this response may be an evolved defense against leaf-eating insects.  相似文献

Summary A study of the effects of defoliation by insects on the chemistry of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), and on the performance of Panolis flammea (Lepidoptera; Noctuidae) larvae, was carried out in a forest in northwest Scotland I year after a severe outbreak of P. flammea had caused extensive defoliation. Larval weight and survival were not significantly different on trees that had experienced different levels of defoliation in 1986. The nitrogen and tannin content of current and previous years' pine needles was not significantly affected by defoliation (although both were slightly greater in the foliage of defoliated trees). Phosphorus content of young pine foliage was lower (but not significantly lower except on one occasion) on heavily defoliated trees. On all sampling occasions, however, the nitrogen: phosphorus ratio was significantly higher on heavily defoliated trees. There were large differences in monoterpene composition of the previous year's shoots associated with defoliation intensity, but these differences had largely disappeared in the new growth. The results are discussed in relation to other studies on the effects of insect damage on plant chemistry and insect performance and in relation to the abundance of P. flammea in Scotland.  相似文献

Deciduous larches, Larix spp., and evergreen pines, Pinus spp., are sympatric Pinaceae conifers. Adjacent monocultures of 10-year-old Larix decidua Mill. and Pinus resinosa Ait. were subjected to single-season artificial defoliation by clipping from 0% to 99% of each needle. Survival, above-ground productivity, and architecture were measured for 36 months. P. resinosa and L. decidua exhibited differential relationships with defoliation intensity and recovery time. Two months after treatment, defoliation reduced larch height growth but had no effect on radial growth. By contrast, P. resinosa stem radial growth was reduced immediately, but height growth was not decreased until the following year. Pine leader growth and above-ground biomass following 66% defoliation never recovered to control values or 33% defoliated pines. Conversely, defoliated larch quickly recovered from an initial growth loss to eliminate all treatment effects on biomass. The plasticity in architectural response found in larch, but not pine, might partially account for defoliation tolerance. Both P. resinosa and L. decidua exhibited non-linear responses to defoliation. These patterns may be caused partially by the uneven distribution of nutrients within needles, rather than a simple function of leaf area lost to defoliators. Concentrations of 13 nutrients in P. resinosa were highest either in the mid- (Ca, Mg, S, Zn, B, Mn, Fe, Al and Na) or basal- (N, P, K, and Cu) section. The relatively low nutrient content in needle tips may contribute to similar biomass productivity between trees defoliated 33% and controls. Removal of needle mid-sections significantly reduced whole-plant productivity. In contrast, L. decidua nutrients are concentrated in the distal sections. Nutrient concentrations were generally highest in larch. Our results agree with an emergent prediction of the carbon/nutrient balance theory that defoliation more severely reduces growth of evergreen than deciduous species. These results are discussed within the physiological, ecological and evolutionary context of allocation theory, with implications for natural resource management and plant-insect interaction theory.
