1. The ecological success of social insects lies in their ability to prevent the exploitation of colony resources by competitors or parasites. Nestmate recognition is therefore of crucial importance in maintaining the integrity of the colony. Furthermore, inter‐colony competitive relationships are often complex, as many species discriminate between neighbours and strangers, with reduced (the dear enemy phenomenon) or increased levels of aggression towards nearby colonies, depending on the species. In this context, between‐species comparisons could be particularly helpful to investigate the proximate causes underlying this context‐dependent phenomenon, but these are notoriously lacking. 2. Here an attempt was made to circumvent this drawback by studying three closely related sympatric ant species with very similar life histories that belong to the Neoponera apicalis complex. The present study investigated how nestmate recognition and inter‐colony competitive relationships were influenced by spatial, chemical and genetic distances between colonies. 3. It was found that one species, N. apicalis morph 7, showed a clear dear enemy phenomenon with no influence of chemical and genetic distances, suggesting the existence of a learning process. In contrast, N. apicalis morph 4 and Neoponera verenae morph 1 failed to show any strong discrimination between close and distant non‐nestmates. 4. These results are discussed in the light of the observed interspecific variation in nesting preferences, possibly constraining the opportunities of familiarisation between nearby nests, and modulating the competition for resources between colonies. 5. It is argued that this study further reinforces the relative threat level hypothesis as an ultimate explanation for neighbour–stranger discrimination processes.  相似文献

The ability of individuals to respond differentially to conspecifics depending on their genetic relatedness is a widespread phenomenon across the animal kingdom. Despite this, little is known about the selection processes that act on the phenotypic variation of traits used during recognition. Here we use a quantitative genetic approach to examine the patterns of genetic variation in cuticular hydrocarbon (CHC) profiles, a pheromonal system used extensively in insect communication. Using gas chromatography, we found family specificity in the CHC profiles of male crickets, Teleogryllus oceanicus. Across CHC peaks, our mean coefficient of additive genetic variation was 10.8%. Multivariate principal component analysis showed that most axes of variation were weighted by CHC peaks with significant additive genetic variation. Our results provide evidence that variation in CHC profiles can reflect genetic relatedness, supporting the widely held belief that this phenotypic trait is used as a mechanism for chemosensory kin recognition.  相似文献

Temporal and spatial analyses are seldom utilized in the study of colony genetic structure, but they are potentially powerful methods which can yield novel insights into the mechanisms underlying variation in breeding systems. Here we present the results of a study which incorporated both of these dimensions in an examination of genetic structure of subterranean termites in the genus Reticulitermes (primarily R. flavipes). Most colonies of this species (70%) were simple families apparently headed by outbred primary reproductives, while most of the remaining (27% of the total) colonies contained low effective numbers of moderately inbred reproductives. Mapping the spatial distribution of colony foraging sites over time revealed that despite the high colony density, the absolute foraging boundaries of most R. flavipes colonies were persistent and exclusive of other conspecific colonies, which suggests that this species is more territorial than has been implied by laboratory studies of intraspecific aggression. Nevertheless, we found a single colony (3% of all colonies) which contained the offspring of more than two unrelated reproductives. Although other studies have also described subterranean termite colonies with a similarly complex genetic composition, we demonstrate here that such colonies can form under natural conditions via the fusion of whole colonies. This study underscores how repeated sampling from individual colonies over time and space can yield information about colony spatial and genetic structure that cannot be obtained from conventional analyses or sampling methods.  相似文献

How honest or reliable signaling can evolve and be maintained has been a major question in evolutionary biology. The question is especially puzzling for a particular class of signals used in aggressive interactions: threat signals. Here, we report a study on song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) in which we assayed males with playbacks on their territories to quantify their aggressiveness (flights and close proximity) and aggressive signaling levels (rates of soft song, a close‐range signal reliably predicting attack) and asked whether these traits affect individuals’ survival on territory. We found that the effect of aggressive signaling via soft song interacted with aggressive behaviors such that there was a negative correlational selection: among males with low aggression, those males that signaled at higher levels (over‐signalers) had higher survival whereas among males with high aggression those that signaled at low levels (under‐signalers) survived longer. In other words, males that deviate from reliable signaling have a survival advantage. These results, along with previous research that suggested most of the deviation from reliable signaling in this system is in the form of under‐signaling (high‐aggression males signaling at low levels) pose a puzzle for future research on how this reliable signaling system is maintained.  相似文献

1. Patterns of aggression between ants from different nests influence colony and population structure. Several species of invasive ants lack colony boundaries over large expanses, forming ‘supercolonies’ with many nests among which workers can move without encountering aggression. 2. Bioassays of aggression were used to determine the colony structure of the invasive ant Myrmica rubra (L.) at eight sites in Massachusetts, the state where the species was first discovered in North America. To improve the ability to distinguish systematic patterns from background variability in aggressiveness, a repeated‐measures design was used and replicate assays for each pair of nests were conducted. 3. Aggressive responses showed that populations at all sites consisted of multiple distinct colonies. Patterns of aggression were repeatable and transitive, with few exceptions. Colonies were identified as clusters of nests whose workers showed little to no aggression towards one another but were aggressive towards conspecifics from more distant nests. 4. The degree of aggression varied considerably among different colony pairs but did not depend in any consistent way on the distance of separation or on whether colonies were neighbours. 5. Territories of neighbouring colonies abutted, indicating that they were restricted by intraspecific competition. Mapped territories ranged in size from 0.03 to 1.2 ha, but colonies at the study sites have not undergone the enormous expansions seen in introduced populations of some other species of invasive ants, and neighbouring colonies compete locally.  相似文献

Females of many species obtain benefits by mating polyandrously, and often prefer novel males over previous mates. However, how do females recognise previous mates, particularly in the face of cognitive constraints? Female crickets appear to have evolved a simple but effective solution: females imbue males with their own cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) at mating and utilise chemosensory self‐referencing to recognise recent mates. Female CHC profiles exhibited significant additive genetic variation, demonstrating that genetically unique chemical cues are available to support chemosensory self‐referencing. CHC profiles of males became more similar to those of females after mating, indicating physical transfer of CHCs between individuals during copulation. Experimental perfuming of males with female CHCs resulted in a female aversion to males bearing chemical cues similar to their own. Chemosensory self‐referencing, therefore, could be a widespread mechanism by which females increase the diversity of their mating partners.  相似文献

Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) have, in insects, important physiological and ecological functions, such as protection against desiccation and as semiochemicals in social taxa, including termites. CHCs are, in termites, known to vary qualitatively and/or quantitatively among species, populations, castes, or seasons. Changes to hydrocarbon profile composition have been linked to varying degrees of aggression between termite colonies, although the variability of results among studies suggests that additional factors might have been involved. One source of such variability may be colony age, as termite colony demographics significantly change over time, with different caste and instar compositions throughout the life of the colony. We here hypothesize that the intracolonial chemical profile heterogeneity would be high in incipient termite colonies but would homogenize over time as a colony ages and accumulates older workers in improved homeostatic conditions. We studied caste‐specific patterns of CHC profiles in Coptotermes gestroi colonies of four different age classes (6, 18, 30, and 42 months). The CHC profiles were variable among castes in the youngest colonies, but progressively converged toward a colony‐wide homogenized chemical profile. Young colonies had a less‐defined CHC identity, which implies a potentially high acceptance threshold for non‐nestmates conspecifics in young colonies. Our results also suggest that there was no selective pressure for an early‐defined colony CHC profile to evolve in termites, potentially allowing an incipient colony to merge nonagonistically with another conspecific incipient colony, with both colonies indirectly and passively avoiding mutual destruction as a result.  相似文献

Cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) cover the cuticle of virtually any insect and do not only protect them from desiccation, but also possess various communicative functions. Previous studies suggested a function as contact sex pheromones in the parasitic wasp family Pteromalidae, but further species need to be studied before more general conclusions are possible. Here, we demonstrate a contact sex pheromone in females of Dibrachys cavus (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae). Males of this parasitoid were arrested on cadavers of 1‐ to 2‐day‐old females, but neither on newly emerged females nor on males. Extracts from 1‐ to 2‐day‐old females and non‐polar fractions were also behaviorally active suggesting a non‐polar contact sex pheromone. Chemical analyses of bioactive and non‐active CHC profiles by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry and subsequent principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that the bioactive profiles from 1‐ to 2‐day‐old females were clearly distinguishable from all other profiles. Among the chemicals showing the strongest impact in the PCA were the two 3‐methylalkanes 3‐methylnonacosane and 3‐methylhentriacontane, which were absent or trace components in the inactive profiles and whose relative amounts increased in females when they became sexually attractive. The putative function of 3‐methylalkanes as key components of the contact sex pheromones in Pteromalidae is discussed.  相似文献

Brown balls, of a similar size but different shape to termite eggs, were found frequently in the piles of eggs of the subterranean termite Reticulitermes speratus. rDNA analysis identified the ball as the sclerotia of the fungus, Fibularhizoctonia sp. nov, which is phylogenetically closest to decay fungi, Athelia spp. Laboratory observation showed that the workers gathered the eggs and the sclerotia indiscriminately, even if they were widely scattered in a Petri dish, and piled them up in a specific place for egg care. We compared the morphology of the eggs with that of sclerotia of Fibularhizoctonia spp. and Athelia spp. in relation to egg carrying behaviour, and found that the workers could only carry the Fibularhizoctonia spp. sclerotia whose diameters were similar to the short diameter of the eggs. We also conducted a bioassay using termite eggs and dummy eggs (glass beads and sea sand) of two diameter-classes, coated with or without the egg-derived chemicals. The workers recognized the eggs based on a combination of the size, shape, and chemical cues. All the results suggested that the sclerotia mimic the eggs both morphologically and chemically. Finally, we found that the workers suppressed germination of sclerotia, and termite egg survival increased in the presence of sclerotia only if they were tended by the workers. If the workers were removed experimentally, the sclerotia germinated and grew by exploiting termite eggs. These results suggest that the sclerotia protect termite eggs from putative pathogens.  相似文献

Hydrocarbon and wax ester components of cuticular lipids of the braconid parasitoid Habrobracon hebetor Say reared at 25 degrees C on larvae of a pyralid moth have been identified by GC-MS and analyzed with respect to adult age, mating status, and diet. The hydrocarbons range in carbon number from C(21) to C(45) and consist of a homologous series of n-alkanes, 11-, 13-, and 15-methyl alkanes, 13,17-dimethyl alkanes, and Z-5, Z-7, and Z-9-alkenes. The wax esters found in the cuticular lipid fraction are a series of homologous compounds with the acid portion being short chain, unbranched, even carbon number acids from C(8) to C(20) (predominately C(8) to C(16)). The alcohol portions of the esters are secondary alcohols with carbon number from C(22) to C(25) (predominately C(23) and C(25)) with the hydroxyl function located at C(6), C(7), C(8), and C(9). Gender, age, and nutritional states were significant factors for variation in several of the individual esters, but mating status did not affect wax ester composition. Ontogenetic examinations indicated that prepupal, and early pupal cuticular lipids contain only hydrocarbons. Low levels of wax esters are detectable in late stage pupae, and somewhat greater quantities of wax esters are present on newly eclosed adults. When pharate adults emerge from the cocoon, however, their cuticular lipids consist of approximately equal amounts of hydrocarbons and wax esters, and 6d post emergence from the cocoon, wax esters are the predominant lipid component.  相似文献

A stranger mother-son pair of the chimpanzee was observed twice interacting with conspecifics of a neighbouring unit-group: first, when the mother and son accidentally encountered them within the core area of the former; second, when the mother and son temporarily immigrated for about one week. On both occasions, the mother and son were severely attacked by adult males of the neighbouring unit-group, and would have been killed had it not been for human intervention. The main target of the aggression was not the infant, but the mother. Some adult males intervened and prevented other males and females from attacking the mother-son pair. Moreover, most adult males displayed an ambivalent attitude since they showed aggression towards them on one occasion, but groomed, reassured and played on another. The reasons for the variable responses of adult males to a stranger female are discussed in terms of possible differences in their mating strategies.  相似文献

The cryptic habits of subterranean termites impair studies of colony delimitation and the organization of foraging. Whereas feeding sites can be identified and the movements of foragers between them can be assessed using traditional mark-release techniques, the assignment of the termites found at feeding sites to their parent colonies remains problematical. Thus the extent and overlap of individual colony foraging territories are unknown. We used microsatellite markers to delineate colonies of R. grassei and compared the results with data from a mark-release-recapture study (Nobre et al., 2007) carried out in the same population and over the same period of time. The majority of colonies exhibited only a single-feeding site, but presented, even at a local scale, a high degree of variability in colony structure and no evidence of inbreeding. F-statistics for some colonies were consistent with pleometrosis. The population as a whole contained individual colonies that were separately identified as Mendelian, mixed family or pleometrotic families. Furthermore, microsatellite data suggest that what was represented by the MRR technique as a single foraging group could be drawn from more than one colony. Colony delineation is discussed as a tool for understanding overall population structure and termite feeding strategies. Received 5 July; revised 3 October 2007; accepted 19 October 2007.  相似文献

In social insects, cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) play an important role in nestmate discrimination processes, but young individuals are usually not discriminated. We studied CHC changes in young workers of the social wasp Polistes dominulus. A quantitative estimation demonstrated that total quantities of CHCs increased after emergence, with branched alkanes increasing drastically when compared with other classes of hydrocarbons. The relative quantity of longer-chain compounds increased with respect to shorter ones; unsaturated compounds decreased. These changes might reduce the capacity of the cuticle to acquire compounds of environmental origin. We then tested whether individuals acquire hydrocarbons from the environment, and whether this capability equally characterises newly emerged and mature wasps. We exposed wasps of two age classes (adults younger or older than 24 h) to four linear hydrocarbons in turn, and observed how nestmates reacted to their re-introduction into the natal colony. Exposed young wasps elicited significantly more aggressive responses than control sisters; but treated wasps older than 24 h were generally accepted by nestmates. Chemical assays showed that exposed young wasps readily absorbed hydrocarbons; older ones did not incorporate hydrocarbons, suggesting that the chemical profiles of mature wasps are less prone to chemical shifts than those of newly emerged wasps.  相似文献

This study investigated the efficacy of extracts from four plants, namely: Azadirachta indica, Ocimum gratissimum, Vernonia amygdalina and Nicotiana tabaccum at managing the population of termites in the laboratory and in the field. The synthetic insecticide (Chlorpyrifos 0.1%) and water were included in the study as controls. In the laboratory, contact toxicity was conducted by topical application of the treatments to the thorax of soldier termite Macrotermes bellicossus and mortality noted. The repellent action of the treatments was tested by releasing 10 of the termites into the center of Petri dishes lined with treated filter paper. The number of insects present on the control and treatment halves was recorded and the percentage repellence values were computed. The residual effects of the treatments was studied by placing five termites in Petri dishes lined with filter paper that have been treated with the treatments 24 hours prior to its placement and insect mortality was noted. The studies were conducted using complete randomised design with four replicates. Field trial of the treatments was conducted on termitaria that were demolished and disinfested with five liters of the treatments. The results showed that all the treatments caused 95–100% mean insect mortality 10 hours after insect exposure and have repellence values of between 40 and 65%. The residual effects of the treatments caused termite mean mortality of 100% in Chlorpyrifos and N. tabacum-treated surfaces and between 50 and 65% in others. In the field, only A. indica and Chlopyrifos were effective at curtailing termite upsurge and rebuild of termitaria.  相似文献

The fungus-growing termites Macrotermes cultivate the obligate ectosymbiontic fungi, Termitomyces. While their relationship has been extesively studied, little is known about the gut bacterial symbionts, which also presumably play a crucial role for the nutrition of the termite host. In this study, we investigated the bacterial gut microbiota in two colonies of Macrotermes gilvus, and compared the diversity and community structure of bacteria among nine termite morphotypes, differing in caste and/or age, using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) and clonal analysis of 16S rRNA. The obtained molecular community profiles clustered by termite morphotype rather than by colony, and the clustering pattern was clearly more related to a difference in age than to caste. Thus, we suggest that the bacterial gut microbiota change in relation to the food of the termite, which comprises fallen leaves and the fungus nodules of Termitomyces in young workers, and leaves degraded by the fungi, in old workers. Despite these intracolony variations in bacterial gut microbiota, their T-RFLP profiles formed a distinct cluster against those of the fungus garden, adjacent soil and guts of sympatric wood-feeding termites, implying a consistency and uniqueness of gut microbiota in M. gilvus. Since many bacterial phylotypes from M. gilvus formed monophyletic clusters with those from distantly related termite species, we suggest that gut bacteria have co-evolved with the termite host and form a microbiota specific to a termite taxonomic and/or feeding group, and furthermore, to caste and age within a termite species.  相似文献

  • 1.1. The cuticular hydrocarbons of the wasp, Polistes dominulus, are linear branched, saturated alkanes, mainly monomethylalkanes.
  • 2.2. The foundress can be distinguished from her offspring by differences in the relative proportions of some alkanes and monomethylalkanes, which were the same in all the foundresses studied here. The ovarian state is linked to the cuticular spectrum since these constituents were present in similar proportions in a foundress and in a descendant with comparably developed ovaries.
  • 3.3. In some, but not all cases, it was possible to discriminate between descendants originating from different foundresses on the basis of other hydrocarbons belonging to all the chemical families present.
  • 4.4. No correlations were observed between the descendants' behavioural profiles and the cuticular hydrocarbon spectra.

Based on abdominal colour three categories of major soldiers were found in Macrotermes bellicosus (Smeathman) (Isoptera: Termitidae). The three main colour types, yellow, red and brown are due to the colour of the defence-secretion stored in the labial gland's reservoirs. The order of these categories correlates with the uric acid titres of the whole individuals. It is concluded that colour could be used as a label for the relative age of a soldier. Age dependent polyethism was observed in soldiers: the individuals of the highest age class were the only ones leaving the nest to accompany the foraging workers, whereas all age categories were found inside the nest. After a significant loss of old individuals younger individuals show flexibility by replacing the missing outgoing nestmates. Caste regulation takes place by an increased rate of soldier development.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Experiments with Macrotermes michaelseni (Sjöstedt), involving artificial groups of different sizes of final larval instar females, showed that the proportion of presoldiers produced in each group decreased exponentially with increase in the size of the colonies. This relationship was not smooth, however, but stepwise. Increasing the number of workers in a group with larvae improved the chance of the larvae differentiating into presoldiers, although the normal proportion of soldiers for the species was not achieved under these conditions, even at maximum crowding. The inhibitory effect of soldiers in stopping larvae differentiating into more soldiers was established, and evidence obtained for a non-volatile or low volatility pheromone. It is postulated that dominance by larvae which have acquired 'competence' over others, allows them to suppress these others from differentiating into presoldiers through the pheromone acting on specific behavioural elements.  相似文献
