1. Paropsine chrysomelids are eucalypt folivores for which it has been hypothesized that the availability of suitable age class foliage (i.e. young foliage) is a more important determinant of host use than the physical and/or chemical characteristics of foliage from different hosts. This prediction was tested by assessing the oviposition preference of Chrysophtharta bimaculata (Olivier) on excised branches of Eucalyptus regnans F. Mueller and E. nitens (Deane & Maiden) Maiden.
2. In cage trials, and as observed in the wild, beetles oviposited preferentially on E. regnans when the branches of both eucalypt species displayed the full range of foliar developmental classes, from immature to fully expanded. However, when the branches were pruned so that both species displayed only immature and expanding leaves, no difference in oviposition between the species occurred. Further, when the branches were pruned so that E. regnans displayed only fully expanded leaves and E. nitens displayed only immature and expanding leaves, females oviposited entirely on the latter species.
3. These results support and extend the hypothesis that C. bimaculata 's ovipositional preference is dictated more by leaf age class than by the tree species from which the leaves derive. In the discussion it is proposed that a eucalypt that initiates and expands leaves rapidly will be less preferred for oviposition than one that develops and expands leaves slowly, because of the smaller area of its canopy with less sclerophyllous foliage.  相似文献

In this work, the waste from 10 forest species of Cantabria have been characterized from the point of view of energy. The studied species were the waste of: Eucalyptus globulus, Eucalyptus nitens, the hybrid E. globulusxE. nitens, Eucalyptus viminalis, Eucalyptus smithii, Eucalyptus regnans, Eucalyptus gunni, Fagus sylvatica, Quercus robur and Pinus radiata. The leaves were the tree part with the greatest NCV (net calorific value) in all the species. The best results were obtained for the leaves of E. smithii (24.5 MJ/kg), F. sylvatica (22.8 MJ/kg) and E. nitens (22.5 MJ/kg), at minimum moisture. Values around 65,000 MJ per hectare and year were obtained for the Eucalyptus spp., and 47,000 MJ per hectare and year for the P. radiata. The economic-environmental analysis revealed that the use of the forest waste for energy production would mean an approximate annual income of 8 Meuro and would fix the annual CO(2) emitted by the Cantabrian industries at 78%.  相似文献

Abstract 1 Paropsine chrysomelid beetles defoliate commercial eucalypt plantations in Australia. Adults and larvae feed on the same host, with the larval food source determined by the oviposition choice of females. Most eucalypt species are heterophyllous, with their foliage undergoing distinct morphological and chemical changes between adult and juvenile growth. 2 The intra‐plant foliage feeding and oviposition preference adults and the larval development of Chrysophtharta agricola were examined using adult and juvenile foliage of a heterophyllous plantation species, Eucalyptus nitens. The foliage types differ in chemistry, toughness, waxiness and timing of production. 3 In the field, feeding damage caused by adult beetles was 15% more frequent on adult foliage than on juvenile foliage; however, egg batches were three times more common on juvenile than on adult foliage. 4 Oviposition preference for juvenile foliage over adult foliage was confirmed in choice trials in the laboratory, with adult fecundity and longevity not significantly different between foliage types. 5 Larval survival, development time and subsequent pupal weight were also unaffected by foliage type, suggesting that neither foliage type is nutritionally superior for adults or for larvae. However, adult foliage was significantly thicker than juvenile foliage and this may prove a physical constraint to larval establishment. Biotic and abiotic factors (including interactions with natural enemies, competition, microclimate and mate location) that may affect patterns of host plant utilization are discussed.  相似文献

Aspects of the life history of Chauliognathus lugubris , a predator of eggs and early stage larvae of the Eucalyptus leafbeetle, Chrysophtharta bimaculata , were studied in southern Tasmania. In the laboratory (ambient temperature 15-25°and artificial diet), the egg to adult period was about 10 months with seven larval stages. Advanced larvae (5th-7th instar) were collected in the field from soil litter during mid-winter. Adults were most common in the spring and early summer. with regular field collections suggesting adult longevity of 2-3 months. Based on the pattern of ovarian development of field-caught adults, in combination with the long larval development times, it appeared that C. lugubris has only one generation a year.  相似文献

为了阐明草地螟Loxostege sticticalis大发生种群幼虫取食行为特征, 在室内条件下(温度22±1℃, 相对湿度70%)对不同幼虫密度[1, 10, 30头/瓶(650 mL)]饲养草地螟幼虫的食物利用率及消化酶活性进行了研究。结果表明: 幼虫中等(或高)密度对草地螟幼虫相对中肠重量、 相对取食量、 粪便干重、 食物利用率和近似消化率及总蛋白酶和亮氨酸氨肽酶活性影响显著。幼虫相对中肠重量以10头/瓶的幼虫密度最大, 1头/瓶的幼虫密度最小。随着幼虫密度的增加, 幼虫相对取食量和粪便干重增加, 而虫体干重减轻, 幼虫食物利用率降低。幼虫密度30头/瓶的幼虫相对取食量和粪便干重显著高于1和10头/瓶的, 而30头/瓶的幼虫食物利用率显著低于1头/瓶的。幼虫近似消化率随幼虫密度的逐渐增加而显著降低。幼虫密度10头/瓶的幼虫总蛋白酶和亮氨酸氨肽酶的活性显著高于1和30头/瓶的, 而淀粉酶的活性受幼虫密度影响不显著。随幼虫密度的增加, 幼虫相对中肠重量与总蛋白酶和亮氨酸氨肽酶活性变化趋势较为一致, 消化酶活性的变化可能与相对中肠重量大小有关。因此, 幼虫密度是影响草地螟幼虫取食行为的重要因子, 这些结果为阐明草地螟大发生种群与一般种群的为害特征提供了重要理论依据。  相似文献

Abstract 1 The autumn gum moth Mnesampela privata (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae, Ennominae) is a native moth that can outbreak, resulting in significant defoliation of plantation eucalypts in southern Australia. 2 Laboratory trials tested M. privata larvae for their dose–response to the ecdysone agonist, Mimic® 700 WP (a.i. 700 g/kg tebufenozide); ground and aerial field trials also tested its efficacy in eucalypt plantations. 3 The laboratory trials showed that there was no significant difference in mortality between larvae treated with 172 g Mimic® (120 g a.i)/ha and those sprayed with doses ranging from 86 to 3340 g Mimic®/ha. 4 Laboratory and field trials demonstrated that second instars were the most susceptible, with the most rapid response. However, second to fourth instars all reached 100% and fifth instars 90% mortality 3 weeks after aerial spraying at 120 g a.i./ha. 5 Aerial spraying an Eucalyptus globulus plantation with 120 g a.i. Mimic® at 20 L/ha caused 95% mortality of instars two to five, and 100% for instars two to four within 3 weeks after spraying. 6 Ground spraying to run‐off with 120 g a.i. Mimic®/ha reduced defoliation of E. grandis from between 67% to 80% for unsprayed trees to 0% defoliation for sprayed trees. 7 The window for effective management of M. privata larvae is 3–5 weeks, during first to third instar development. 8 Replacement of broad‐spectrum insecticides with the more target‐specific Mimic® should increase the biodiversity of plantations and therefore would be more environmentally friendly.  相似文献

Abstract:  We investigated, by means of topical, residual and field assays, the toxicity of four insecticides ( Bacillus thuringiensis , azadirachtin, flufenoxuron and ethofenprox) to adult, larvae and eggs of the Eucalyptus snout-beetle Gonipterus scutellatus and their side-effects on the adults of the solitary egg parasitoid Anaphes nitens , its natural enemy. In the topical toxicity experiment, both flufenoxuron and ethofenprox severely affected G. scutellatus , causing 100% adult mortality after 7 days, and 75 and 100% larval mortality, respectively. Ethofenprox also caused 93% larval pre-eclosion mortality and 100% parasitoid mortality. In the residual experiment, azadirachtin acted as an effective larvicide when ingested (73% mortality after 7 days). Ethofenprox showed the highest toxicity, with 100% mortality of adults and larvae of G. scutellatus after 24 h. On the day 7 of observation, flufenoxuron resulted in 93% adult mortality and 100% larval mortality. After contact with residuals, only ethofenprox and flufenoxuron had adversely affected A. nitens (98% mortality after 48 h). Bacillus thuringiensis exhibited only a slight activity against the pest or the parasitoid. The field experiment was carried out on three localities, with a preliminary sampling, and three samplings after the applications of the products, on days 7, 14 and 30. We evaluated the parasitism rate, parasitoid sex ratio, parasitoid pre-eclosion mortality, the abundance of G. scutellatus adults, larvae and egg capsules, the pre-eclosion mortality rate of weevil eggs and larvae and the foliar damage. Only fluenoxuron and ethofenprox reduced the pest population and the foliar damages, but ethofenprox also significantly decreased the rate of parasitism (17%) after 7 days. Given our experimental results, we suggest that flufenoxuron and azadirachtin could be used in association with the natural enemy.  相似文献

Cannibalism in the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) (FAW), is a limiting factor in a baculovirus production system. To detect the impact of cannibalism, a two-step bioassay was conducted with different larval ages of FAW fed on two food sources (corn and castor bean leaves) contaminated with the S. frugiperda multiple-embedded nucleopolyhedrovirus. In a first bioassay, the food source affected the cannibalism, being higher for all larval ages tested (5-, 6- and 7-day-old larvae) in larvae fed on corn than on those fed on castor bean leaves. Larval mortality, weight equivalent and larval equivalents (LEs) per hectare decreased as the larval age increased. Larval weight, occlusion bodies (OBs)/larva and total OBs increased when the larval age increased. In a second bioassay, in which only 6- and 7-day-old larvae were used because of the performance in the first bioassay, the cannibalism rates were affected by the interaction between food sources and time of feeding (48 and 72 h), reaching the highest values for 6- and 7-day-old larvae fed on corn leaves for 72 h. Mortality of the FAW was affected by the interaction between food sources, larval age and time of feeding. The lowest mortalities were on 7-day-old larvae when they were fed on castor bean leaves for 48 and 72 h. Larval weight, OBs/larva, total OBs and LEs were affected by the interaction between food sources and larval age. A significant correlation was observed between larval weight and OBs/larva that fed on both food sources, suggesting that larval weight can be used to achieve a concentration to be sprayed in 1 ha.  相似文献

The selective advantage offered to individuals living within groups may relate to natural enemy defence, but in leaf feeding insects may also relate to overcoming plant defences, especially with respect to feeding establishment. We conducted a series of experiments focusing on neonate larval survival, examining the effect of group size and leaf age on the survival of a eucalypt-feeding beetle, Chrysophtharta agricola , which formed groups of up to 43 larvae on the foliage of Eucalyptus nitens in the field. In the laboratory, in the absence of natural enemies, we found that initial density, leaf age and damage to the leaf margin significantly affected larval survival. Survival of solitary first-instar larvae on young foliage was around 80% whereas on older foliage it was around 11%. Prior damage to the leaf margin significantly increased survival on older leaves to around 61%. Initial larval density also affected survival, although mortality was always significantly higher on older leaves. On older leaves the larval group size above which mortality increased no further was over two-fold that on young leaves. Observations of group feeding behaviour at each instar showed that the majority of larvae (75.7%) were aligned facing away from the feeding site and that only around 7.5%, or just 1–2 larvae per group, fed at any one time. Feeding larvae chewed the leaf edge by straddling the leaf margin. Measurements of leaf margins showed that older leaves had significantly thicker leaf margins and 'thickness' ratios (leaf margin to leaf lamina proper). In the field, approximately 85% of all larvae occurred on the first two expanded leaf pairs, and larval mortality was highest between eclosion and establishment of the first instar. However, beetles apparently did not adjust clutch size according to leaf age.  相似文献

研究比较了粤东地区天然林和速生桉树林枯枝落叶层无脊椎动物的群落结构以及菌食性蓟马的物种多样性.结果表明,螨类、弹尾目、双翅目幼虫、膜翅目、缨翅目和鞘翅目构成了该地区天然林枯枝落叶层无脊椎动物群落的主要成分,它们的个体数占天然林枯枝落叶层无脊椎动物总个体数的96.5%;而螨类、弹尾目、双翅目幼虫和鳞翅目幼虫则是速生桉树林枯枝落叶层无脊椎动物群落的主要成分,它们的个体数占全部个体数的96.3%.天然林的多样性指数H′、均匀性指数J、DG指数均比速生桉树林高,Simpson优势度指数D比桉树林小,菌食性蓟马种类和个体数也显著多于桉树林,说明速生桉树林凋落物无脊椎动物多样性不及天然林丰富,但螨类数量巨大,占桉树林无脊椎动物总数的77.6%,以致两种林分凋落物无脊椎动物的平均密度差异不显著.表明保留桉树人工林的林下植被和凋落物对提高速生桉树林枯枝落叶层无脊椎动物的群落多样性具有重要意义.  相似文献

Abstract The Tasmanian eucalyptus leaf beetle, Chrysophtharta bimaculata (Olivier) (Chrysomelidae: Paropsini), deposits batches of eggs on the leaf surfaces of its Eucalyptus hosts. Using a primary host of the beetle, Eucalyptus regnans , the aim of the present study was to examine whether oviposition site discrimination was occurring at the level of the individual leaf and what, if any, chemical attributes were involved in site selection. From field surveys, it was found that 55−65% of egg batches were laid in the leaf-tip zone, despite this zone representing only 5.6% of the total leaf-surface area. Chemical analyses of expanding leaves showed that the concentrations of three essential oil components and three surface waxes varied significantly between the leaf tip and remainder of the leaf. However, on plastic mimic leaves with uniform, non-foliar chemistry, eggs were still preferentially laid near 'leaf' tips. Hence, leaf essential oils and surface waxes need not be involved in oviposition site choice. Observations of ovipositing beetles showed that they wrapped their tarsi around the leaf margin, suggesting that the ability to grasp the edges of a leaf may explain the oviposition pattern observed.  相似文献

Summary Growth and bioenergetics of the last instar larvae of Achaea janata fed on a wide range of rations of leaves of Ricinus communis (ad libitum to 50 or 100 mg leaf per larva per day) at 22, 27, 32 and 35° C were studied. Increase in larval mortality, extension of larval duration and decrease in final body weight were some of the adverse effects of restricted rations. Whereas larval duration was influenced by ration level, pupal period was dependent on temperature. The larvae partially compensated for restricted rations by enhancing feeding rate over the limit expected in proportion to the ration offered. The level of compensation was higher at 27° C. Influence of temperature or its interaction with ration on assimilation efficiency was more significant than the independent influence of ration; the efficiency ranged from 57 to 67%. Restriction of ration below a critical level (300 mg/larva/day at 35° C and 200 mg/larva/day at other temperatures) significantly influenced the net conversion efficiency; the lowest efficiency of 1.3% was recorded for the larvae fed 100 mg leaf/day. Energy content of the terminal larva determined the percentage of energy transferred to the imago, which ranged from 37 to 55% of the terminal larval energy.  相似文献

在一定空间(7238厘米~3)的养虫器内,豚草条纹叶(虫甲)成虫的生殖力随密度的增加而下降。单对饲养的生殖力最高,平均产卵386.7粒;当密度为18和25头时,产卵仅157.6和50.4粒。幼虫期以及蛹期的死亡率,在不同空间中均随密度的增加而增加,随空间的增大,各密度下的死亡率相应减少。食料质量是影响幼虫存活的重要因素之一,用豚草上、中、下部叶片饲养幼虫,其死亡率分别为10%、70.3%和97.6%。幼虫期累计食叶量可达90.58毫克鲜重,随着日龄增加,近似消化力逐渐下降,摄入物质转换为体物质的效率和消化食物转换为体物质的效率随日龄的增加而增加。成熟成虫的取食量基本恒定,平均每48小时食叶28.01毫克鲜重,其近似消化力为64.2%。刚羽化出土的成虫,达到成熟进入生殖生长所需的食叶量约为213.22毫克鲜重。  相似文献

为研究甜菜夜蛾Spodoptera exigua幼虫被斑痣悬茧蜂Meteorus pulchricornis寄生后的取食以及食物利用情况,在室内采用重量法测定了甜菜夜蛾4龄幼虫被寄生后取食量、体重增加量、营养指标的变化。结果表明:被寄生甜菜夜蛾幼虫的取食量、生长率和食物利用效率等明显受到抑制,幼虫被寄生后第3-6 d 取食量显著小于未被寄生幼虫,寄生后第4 d 的幼虫取食量只有正常幼虫的29.89%,第5 d只有48.69%。幼虫在寄生后的第3-5 d体重增加量显著小于未被寄生幼虫,分别为正常幼虫的21.51%,38.87%和14.42%,相对生长率则也显著低于后者。被寄生甜菜夜蛾幼虫的营养利用表现也明显不同于未被寄生幼虫,反映生长和代谢效率的食物利用率(ECI)和食物转化率(ECD)均显著降低,而反映吸收效率的近似消化率(AD)则提高。虽然在寄生后第4 d出现了相反的现象,其原因可能在于第4 d取食量明显减少,而体重仍在增加。本研究表明,斑痣悬茧蜂寄生明显抑制寄主甜菜夜蛾幼虫的取食、食物利用效率和生长。  相似文献

为了明确幼虫密度对草地螟Loxostege sticticalis种群增长的影响, 对室内条件下(温度22±1℃, RH 70%±5%, 光周期16L∶ 8D)不同幼虫密度[1, 10, 20, 30和40头/瓶(650 mL)]饲养的草地螟生长发育及繁殖进行了研究。结果表明: 幼虫密度对草地螟幼虫体色、 发育历期和存活率, 以及蛹重和成虫生殖等有显著影响。随着幼虫密度的增加, 幼虫体色黑化程度呈增强趋势, 幼虫密度大于10头/瓶时的体色黑化值均显著大于幼虫密度为1头/瓶时的体色黑化值(P<0.05)。20头/瓶的幼虫和蛹历期最短, 且随幼虫密度的增加而显著延长(P<0.05)。幼虫存活率以10头/瓶最高, 其他幼虫密度的幼虫存活率显著较低(P<0.05)。蛹重以1头/瓶的最重, 并随幼虫密度增加而显著下降(P<0.05)。成虫产卵量和交配率分别以1和20头/瓶的幼虫密度最高, 幼虫密度升高则产卵量、 交配率逐渐降低。成虫产卵历期随着幼虫密度的增加逐渐缩短。雌、 雄蛾寿命分别以10和20头/瓶幼虫密度时最长, 幼虫密度过高时雌雄蛾寿命又显著缩短(P<0.05)。生命表分析表明, 幼虫密度对草地螟种群增长指数有显著影响, 以10头/瓶幼虫密度的种群增长指数最高, 幼虫密度过高或过低时种群增长指数下降。据此认为, 幼虫密度是影响草地螟种群增长的重要因子之一。  相似文献

A study, involving laboratory choice tests, was conducted to determine the feeding behavior, based on food preference, of the adult and larval stage of the rove beetle, Atheta coriaria Kraatz when presented with both fresh moistened oatmeal and second instar fungus gnat, Bradysia sp. nr. coprophila (Lintner) larvae in Petri dishes. Rove beetles used in this study came from a laboratory-reared colony. A rating scale from 1 to 5, based on percent missing (1 = 0 to 10%, 2 = 11 to 30%, 3 = 31 to 50%, 4 = 51 to 75%, and 5 = 76 to 100%), was used to objectively assess the amount of oatmeal and number of fungus gnat larvae consumed by each rove beetle adult and larva. In all the choice tests, A. coriaria adults and larvae preferred to feed on fungus gnat larvae (78% and 69%, respectively) significantly more so than oatmeal (9% and 5%, respectively) based on the amount of oatmeal and number of fungus gnat larvae consumed after 4 and 6 hours. There were relatively minimal differences in the amount of food consumed for both adults and larvae after 4 and 6 hours. The results of this study indicate that oatmeal may be an inexpensive supplemental food source, during the rearing process, which will not inhibit the effectiveness of rove beetles to control fungus gnat larvae when released into greenhouses.  相似文献

The number ( \(\bar X\) =2.4) ofEucelatoria sp. maggots that completed development in 4th- or 5th-instar larvae of the tobacco budworm (TBW),Heliothis virescens (F.), was significantly greater (P<0.05) than the number ( \(\bar X\) =1.2) that completed development in 3rd-instar larvae. Maggot development time decreased with increasing number of maggots per host larva. It also decreased with advancing larval instars. The range was 6.9±1.1 days in early 3rd-instar TBW larvae and 5.0±0.8 days in early 5th-instar TBW larvae. Unparasitized 3rd- or 4th-instar TBW larvae consumed significantly more food than did similar aged larvae parasitized byEucelatoria sp., but larvae parasitized during the early 5th-instar consumed more food than did similar aged unparasitized larvae. Consumption by 4th- or 5th-instar larvae increased significantly as maggot densities increased from 1 to 3 per host larva, but decreased at a density of 4 or more maggots per host larva. Although body weight gain and consumption were both significantly reduced 48 and 120 h after parasitization of late 3rd-instar larvae (6 days old), the approximate digestibility (AD) value was significantly greater for parasitized than for unparasitized larvae. Unparasitized larvae were more efficient in converting digested food to body substance (ECD) than parasitized larvae, but the efficiency in conversion of ingested food to body substance (ECI) was similar for both parasitized and unparasitized larvae.  相似文献

Information on the growth response of a crop plant in relation to temperature can be helpful in selecting genotypes to suit local environments, scheduling favourable time of planting and forecasting growth and yield. To determine the effects of varying temperature on root and shoot elongation of eucalypt seedlings, elongation rates of roots and shoots were measured in rhizotrons for two species (Eucalyptus nitens (Deane and Maiden) Maiden, and Eucalyptus globulus Labill.) at a temperature range of 5–23 °C. Within this range of temperatures, elongation rates of roots and shoots of both species increased with an increase in temperature. Roots of E. globulus were more sensitive and shoots less sensitive to temperature than those of E. nitens. However, the threshold temperature corresponding with zero elongation rate predicted from the regression of elongation rate against temperature was similar for the roots (∼5 °C) and shoots (∼0 °C) of both species. Hysteresis did not appear to have a significant influence on root or shoot elongation of both species during warming compared with cooling. Results are discussed highlighting the importance of the interaction between development and growth of plant components.  相似文献

This study assessed the feeding preference of larvae of Triplectides sp. (Trichoptera, Leptoceridae) exposed to leaves of native (Hoffmannia dusenii Standley, 1931) and exotic (Eucalyptus globulus Labillardiere, 1799) trees. We hypothesized that, regardless of the origin of the leaves, larval preference is determined mainly by leaf anatomy and quality. Leaves from both species were conditioned with and without nutrient enrichment (NPK), and the four food items were offered in paired combinations to 162 larvae. Larval preference varied according to leaf combinations. In treatments containing both species, larvae preferred to feed on H. dusenii because of softer tissues and anatomical structure. The only exception was the treatment containing discs of enriched E. globulus and non-enriched H. dusenii where enhanced microbial activity on enriched leaves provided a softer resource to shredders. Our results corroborate the initial hypothesis and suggest that introduction of exotic leaves and changes in nutrient availability may affect shredder activity in streams and, consequently, organic-matter processing and ecosystem functioning.  相似文献

1. Host plant switching by dispersing early instar lepidopterans could have implications for parasitoid performance, but this possibility has not been evaluated thoroughly. 2. Host plant switching affected the weight of L. dispar larvae at the time of parasitoid emergence, but the effect of switching per se was not a significant factor in C. melanoscela size or development. 7. Lymantria dispar larvae that fed on Populus as their second host outperformed larvae that fed ultimately on Acer. 8. Parasitoids yielded from L. dispar larvae that fed ultimately on Populus outperformed parasitoids yielded from larvae that fed ultimately on Acer. 9. Per cent mortality of L. dispar due to parasitism and percentage adult C. melanoscela emergence were highest in parasitized larvae fed Populus, poor in hosts fed Acer, and intermediate in switching larvae.  相似文献
