Giant water bug Kirkaldyia (=Lethocerus) deyrolli (Belostomatidae: Heteroptera) nymphs consume many individuals of anuran larvae (tadpoles) before they reach adulthood. However, no quantitative data on the number of tadpoles consumed have been made available until now, despite the importance of this data for the conservation of this species. The number of tree frog, Hyla japonica (Hylidae: Anura), tadpoles consumed by nymphs of K. deyrolli was examined under laboratory conditions. The number increased according to the developmental stage of the nymphs; the fifth instar nymphs were the highest consumers. The total numbers consumed by the nymphs throughout development were 155.0 ± 12.8 (average ± SD) and 172.8 ± 9.6 for the males and the females, respectively. Thus, it might be important to maintain high densities of frogs in fields to conserve the population of K. deyrolli into the future.  相似文献

Summary A mark-recapture study was carried out in sympatric populations of Lacerta agilis and Lacerta vivipara in the Netherlands from 1976 to 1982. In most years the age structure of both populations was pyramidal. For both species life expectation of females was higher and on average they did live longer. Hence the sex ratio for adults deviated significantly from 1.0 in favour of females. Maximum age for Lacerta vivipara was 8 years (female) and for Lacerta agilis 12 years (male). The density of both species fluctuated around 100/ha. The biomass of Lacerta agilis was twice that of Lacerta vivipara. In Lacerta vivipara the 3rd and 4th calendar year class supplied 78% of total net reproduction; in Lacerta agilis the 4th, 5th, and 6th calendar year classes supplied 68%. In both populations the population replacement rate was 2. Population turnover time was 4.83 years for Lacerta agilis and 2.81 for Lacerta vivipara. The life history strategy of the Lacerta vivipara population is compared with six other European Lacertavivipara populations.  相似文献

Summary The effects of density on growth and development of Scaphiopus couchi tadpoles in desert ponds were investigated, and sources of mortality over a three-year period were documented. In 16 of the 82 ponds monitored, predation was the principal cause of death, demonstrating that tadpoles in desert ponds may be exposed to high levels of predation, although the overall importance of predation is less here than in more mesic areas. Desiccation was the primary cause of mortality in 49 ponds. Growth and development were extremely slow in most high density ponds and as a result most tadpoles were unable to metamorphose before ponds dried. Only 8 ponds produced metamorphs, and mortality was high even in these. Food-supplementation resulted in some metamorphosis in high density ponds, although the effect was diminished by the extreme crowding in most ponds. In low density ponds, S. couchi tadpoles can develop very quickly and metamorphose. High mortality due to desiccation is largely a consequence of high density: tadpoles rarely completed development in high density ponds, regardless of pond duration.  相似文献

Summary A bioenergetics simulation model of the growth and life history of the aquatic predator Nephelopsis obscura Verrill was developed and validated using both experimentation and sensitivity analysis. Sensitivity analysis demonstrated that the model's internal feedbacks resulted in stability similar to homeostatic biological mechanisms. The experimental validation showed the model very accurately predicts growth at 10°C and 15°C but is slightly biased at 20°C. Simulation output was also consistent with the observed data on Nephelopsis from the site from which the simulation input data were obtained and indicated that Nephelopsis growth is more sensitive to prey variation among years than to temperature variation. Although built using data from a population at one extreme of the spectrum observed in life history and growth, the model was able to emulate the growth of Nephelopsis throughout its range. Thus, the variability in size and life history observed in the field can be explained as the result of a plastic phenotype responding to different habitat conditions.  相似文献

Synopsis Allocation of energy to current reproduction at the expense of other functions, such as growth, can limit future reproductive potential. This cost of reproduction is a central concept of life history theory but has been difficult to verify in comparative field studies. Three levels of comparison of growth rates and reproductive investments were evaluated within and among populations of longear sunfish,Lepomis megalotis. All three demonstrated high levels of reproductive investment associated with reduced somatic growth. Within populations of central longear sunfish there are precociously mature sneaker makes and later maturing parental makes; sneakers have greater gonadosomatic index (GSI) values and slower somatic growth rates than parental makes. Between subspecies of longear sunfish grown under common conditions, there are differences in age at maturity and in the level of physiological reproductive investment that are associated with distinct differences in growth rates. Between populations of central longear sunfish inhabiting different sites, there are differences in the level of reproductive investment that are also associated with differences in somatic growth. Each comparison produced evidence that trade-offs occur between these life history traits, supporting the hypothesis that there is a cost of reproduction among male sunfish and suggesting that differences in strategies of reproductive investment contribute to variation in somatic growth.  相似文献

Turnerella (Gigartinales) withT. mertensiana known from northern Japan was studied to determine its life history. Carpospores cultured from foliose female plants gave rise on germination to crustose plants containing tetrasporangia, as noted previously inT. pennyi from the Atlantic. The crusts were slow to develop and required 3–5 years to achieve reproductive maturity. Tetraspores liberated in culturedT. mertensiana gave rise on germination eventually to thalli similar to gametophyticT. mertensiana. Thus this species may be said to adhere to the pattern of life history in which a large, foliose gametophyte alternates with a small crustose tetrasporophyte. The erect filaments of the small sporophytes branch laterally and tetrasporangial mother cells are found there, exemplifying an unusual method for crustose species to produce tetrasporangia.  相似文献

Summary We studied the reproductive ecology of a population of Sceloporus undulatus erythrocheilus near Walsenburg, CO during the summers of 1987–1990. Reproductive activity commences soon after emergence in early May and continues until the middle of July. Females mature in their second year following hatching at an age of 20–21 months and a size of 60–63 mm snout-vent length (SVL). Two clutches, averaging10.9 eggs, are produced per year. Larger females produce larger clutches with an increase of one egg per 3 mm SVL. Average SVL of females was 71 mm. Eggs are reasonably large (0.32 g) and relative clutch mass was the largest reported for the species (34% of body mass). A principal component analysis was used to examine relationships among reproductive characters in 12 populations of Sceloporus undulatus. The analysis suggested that patterns of reproduction in this wide-ranging species result from several factors reflecting both adaptive and phylogenetic sources of variation.  相似文献

Invasive species trigger biodiversity losses and alter ecosystem functioning, with life history shaping invasiveness (Sakai et al., Annu Rev Ecol Syst 32:305–332, 2001). However, pinpointing the relation of a specific life history to invasion success is difficult. One approach may be comparing congeners. The two Palearctic pavement ants, Tetramorium sp.E (widely known as T. caespitum, Schlick-Steiner et al., Mol Phylogenet Evol 40:259–273, 2006) and T. tsushimae have invaded North America (Steiner et al., Biol Invasions 8:117–123, 2006). Their life histories differ in that T. sp.E has separate single-queened colonies but T. tsushimae multi-queened colonies scattered over large areas (Sanada-Morimura et al., Insect Soc 53:141–148, 2006; Schlick-Steiner et al., Mol Phylogenet Evol 40:259–273, 2006; Steiner et al., Biol Invasions 8:117–123, 2006). Comparison of the genetic diversity in the entire native and non-native ranges will elucidate the invasion histories. Here, we present 13 and 11 microsatellites, developed for T. sp.E and T. tsushimae, respectively, and characterize all for both species. Florian M. Steiner, Wolfgang Arthofer and Birgit C. A study on population dynamics of wild Formosan macaques (Macaca cyclopis) in Kenting, southern Taiwan, was conducted from March 1985 to August 1990. At first, only one monkey troop was studied. It fissioned in 1987 and both of the daughter troops have been observed since then. Total number of animals increased from 10 to 29 over the years, but the sizes of individual troops have never been more than 20. Seasonality in breeding has been detected: copulations were concentrated in the period from November to January and 75% of all the 28 births occurred between April and June. Time of birth by parous females without offspring from the preceding year was earlier than that of lactating females. Young females gave their first births at 4 or 5 years of age. Total birth rate over the study period was 0.8 infant per female per year. Hunting was the main cause of death while natural mortality rate was low for the animals. There was only one adult male in each troop for most of the time. Troop males in the two daughter troops have been replaced two or three times in the three years by some solitary males that moved around in the area. The reproductive parameters of Formosan macaques in Kenting were found to be more similar to that of rhesus monkeys than to Japanese macaques. And a case of higher reproductive success in a high-ranking matriline was reported.  相似文献

Data on interbirth intervals are reported for two forest-living guenons,Cercopithecus mitis andC. ascanius, from a western Kenyan site. Measured intervals for females whose first offspring survived varied from 24 to 54 months (median 47,N=10) forC. mitis, and from 49 to 60 months (median 52,N=3) forC. ascanius. Intervals were shorter when the first of two offspring died. These results are supported by data on estimated intervals, in which the date of the first of two births was estimated, and incomplete intervals. Our measurements exceed previous estimates of interbirth intervals in wild populations and measured intervals of captive animals. Compared to closely related species inhabiting unpredictable and seasonal environments, these forest guenons breed very slowly indeed.  相似文献

The variability of morphological and lifehistory traits in Drosophila melanogaster and D. subobscura, two sympatric Drosophila species of different climatic origin, were investigated with regard to seasonal and daily temperature and humidity fluctuations to assess thermal sensitivity and the responses of freeliving organisms to oscillating temperatures. Temperature and humidity were measured continuously at the site where Drosophila were observed throughout the day, and thus represent a realistic picture of the temperature environment of these animals. A phenotypic model (gaussian curve) of temperature performance was fitted to daily fecundities and provided estimates of the position of temperature optimum and of the maximum and the breadth of performance for both species. D. melanogaster had a higher optimum temperature than D. subobscura. A trade-off between the maximum and the breadth of performance was detected both within and between the species.  相似文献

The morphology ofPedobesia lamourouxii andDerbesia ryukyuensis, both collected in Shimoda and the adjacent areas in central Japan, was studied from field specimens and laboratory cultures. Specimens which had the same morphology as EuropeanP. lamourouxii produced stephanokont zoospores which developed into either prostrate filaments or expanded discoidal thalli similar to those described by Feldmann and Codomier (1974) and Feldmannet al. (1975). Erect filament identical with the thallus found in nature developed directly from prostrate filaments. The specimens which had morphology similar to that ofDerbesia ryukyuensis described by Yamada and Tanaka (1938) also produced stephanokont zoospores which developed similarly to those ofP. lamourouxii. This species is, therefore, a member ofPedobesia, and it is made a new combinationP. ryukyuensis (Yamada et Tanaka) Kobara et Chihara, comb. nov.  相似文献

Summary Life table experiments were conducted on the generalist suspension feeder Daphnia galeata, using as food the two green algae (Chlorophyta) Scenedesmus acutus and Oocystis lacustris. Oocystis was hypothesized to be a lower quality food because it is convered with a thick sheath, believed to reduce digestibility. Results showed that Oocystis is a lower quality food for Daphnia, but only at relatively low food concentrations (0.15 mg C/L) and not at higher concentrations (1.0 mg C/L). At 0.15 mg C/L, Daphnia intrinsic rate of increase (r) when grown on Oocystis was only half that when grown on Scenedesmus. Daphnia r was similar at 0.15 mg C/L Oocystis and 0.075 mg C/L Scenedesmus, indicating that Daphnia requires twice as much Oocystis as Scenedesmus to achieve the same fitness. Intrinsic rate of increase was lower on Oocystis mainly because age at first reproduction was greatly delayed compared to that on Scenedesmus (13.6 vs 7.3 d). In addition, juvenile growth and survivorship were reduced on Oocystis compared with Scenedesmus. Clutch sizes were similar on the two foods, indicating that once individuals reached adulthood, the two foods were similar in quality. In contrast, at high food concentrations (1.0 mg C/L), the two algae were similar in quality for both juveniles and adults, and r was not significantly different on the two foods. Ingestion and assimilation rate experiments whowed that Daphnia consumes the two algae at identical rates, and that adults assimilate the two algae at similar rates. However, juveniles assimilate Oocystis at much lower rates than Scenedesmus, possibly accounting for reduced juvenile growth and delay in age at maturity at low concentrations. Thus, Daphnia exhibits an ontogenetic shift in its ability to utilize Oocystis, and this can result in juvenile bottlenecks in which survival and growth of young age classes are of critical importance in determining population dynamics. Because food quality effects were manifested primarily in juveniles and at low concentrations, food quality effects in nature will depend on phytoplankton abundance and age-structure of Daphnia populations.  相似文献

The effects of colonial ecomorphs of the green alga Scenedesmus acutus on growth of Daphnia cucullata and D. pulex were examined. In ecologically relevant densities (up to 200 animals l-1) the relatively small D. cucullata did not induce colony formation in Scenedesmus acutus, whereas the larger congener D. pulex significantly promoted colony formation. Both clearance rate and population growth rate (r) were significantly lower in D. cucullata when fed colonial Scenedesmus then when fed unicellular food. However, for D. pulex no effects of food type were observed. These results show that large Daphnia may influence its food in such a way that smaller congeners and competitors are negatively affected.  相似文献

Growth and reproduction were studied in the laboratory in a cross-designed experimental set-up in four Daphnia galeata subpopulations collected from different locations (with respect to water characteristics) in a reservoir (epilimnion, metalimnion and hypolimnion in the deepest part of the reservoir near the dam and epilimnion of the upstream part of the reservoir) and in a laboratory clone of the same species. The results of two-way ANOVA revealed significant effects of the two parameters manipulated – source of water used for cultures and Daphnia subpopulation – on the life history characteristics of growth and reproduction. The water from the upstream part of the reservoir was the most favourable culture medium for all characteristics of the Daphnia groups studied (the largest primiparae, clutches and eggs, the shortest postembryonic development time and filtering setae). The poorest performances were recorded in the downstream, epilimnetic and metalimnetic waters. The primiparae in the hypolimnetic water were smaller but had relatively larger clutches of smaller eggs and slightly longer postembryonic development times. The Daphnia subpopulation originating from the hypolimnion had the smallest primiparae, the largest clutches, the smallest eggs and the shortest postembryonic development, whereas the opposite was found in animals from the epilmnion. These differences in ecologically relevant traits were supported by analysis of the quasi-neutral genetic markers that indicated significant site-dependent differences in clonal structure between the subpopulations. There was no consistent trend to higher within-group variance in the life history traits in the genetically heterogeneous subpopulations from the reservoir compared to the laboratory clone.  相似文献

In order to study how polyploidy affects life history patterns in animals, we have examined sympatric diploid and polyploid brine shrimp (Artemia parthenogenetica) from China, Italy and Spain under laboratory conditions. At optimal temperature and salinity (25°C and 90 ppt), diploids from the three populations had much higher intrinsic rates of increase, higher fecundity, faster developmental rates, and larger brood sizes than their sympatric polyploids. The Chinese and Italian populations were selected for further analysis to determine the life history responses of diploids and polyploids to temperature and salinity changes. Under intermediate and high salinities, Chinese and Italian polyploids produced most of their offspring as dormant cysts while their sympatric diploids produced most of their offspring as nauplii. This relationship is reversed in the Spanish diploid-polyploid complex. For the Chinese population at 25° C, pentaploid clones had higher developmental rates than diploid clones at 35 ppt; at 90 ppt, diploid clones had higher developmental rates than the pentaploids. Italian diploids and tetraploids had different responses to variation in both temperature (25° C and 31° C) and salinity (30 ppt and 180 ppt). Our results demonstrate that relative fitness of the two cytotypes is a function of environmental conditions and that sympatric diploids and polyploids respond differently to environmental changes. Chinese and Italian polyploids are expected to have lower fitness than their sympatric diploids when the physical environment is not stressful and when intraspecific competition is important. However, polyploids may have advantages over sympatric diploids in stressful habitats or when they encounter short-term lethal temperatures. These results suggest that polyploid Artemia have evolved a suite of life-history characteristics adapting them to environments that contrast to those of their sympatric diploids.  相似文献

Summary Age specific fecundity and size of offspring were compared in two populations of Viviparus ater, one from Lake Zürich (Switzerland) and one from Lake Maggiore (Italy). Females were caged and their offspring sampled at weekly intervals. Average fecundity per female over one year was 19.6 and 14.7 offspring in Lake Zürich and Lake Maggiore, respectively. Average shell widths of offspring at birth in the two lakes were 8.5 mm and 7.4 mm. Fecundity did not change with age in Lake Zürich but decreased with increasing age of the snails in Lake Maggiore. Fecundity and offspring size were positively correlated with the size of the females in both lakes, but fecundity was higher and offspring were larger in Lake Zürich than in Lake Maggiore irrespective of the size of the females. An analysis of covariance, correcting for differences between the two lakes in the total fresh weight of the offspring produced annually, showed that females from the two lakes distributed their reproductive investment differently. Females in Lake Zürich produced relatively fewer but larger offspring than females in Lake Maggiore. This trade-off was hidden because females in Lake Zürich produced twice as much offspring biomass as females in Lake Maggiore. The possibility that different selection regimes might account for the observed differences is discussed.  相似文献

We document the impact of blood parasite infections caused by Hepatozoon sp. on water python (Liasis fuscus) life history traits such as growth rates, condition, reproductive output and survival. Individual snakes maintained similar among-year parasite loads. Hepatozoon infections affected python growth rate, i.e. snakes suffering from high infection levels exhibited significantly slower growth compared to individuals with low parasite loads. Our results suggest that the parasites also affected the pythons nutritional status (condition), as snakes with low condition scores suffered from higher parasite infection levels than snakes with high scores. Furthermore, our data suggest that parasitaemia may affect female reproductive output, as reproductive female pythons harboured lower parasite loads compared to non-reproductive adult females. High levels of parasite infections also affected juvenile python survival, as recaptured snakes harboured significantly lower parasite loads compared to non-recaptured yearling pythons. In our study area, water python have very few natural predators and, hence, experience low mortality rates and commonly reach an age of >15 years. In contrast to results obtained in other studies, parasite loads in larger/older pythons were lower compared to younger snakes, suggesting that only snakes harbouring lower levels of parasitaemia were able to survive to old age. We suggest that a possible cause for the opposing results regarding parasite prevalence and host age may be due to different levels of extrinsic mortality rates and longevity. Long-lived organisms, such as water pythons, may invest relatively more into crucial self-maintenance functions such as parasite defence, compared to short-lived organisms.  相似文献

Summary Plants of an F2 generation derived from crosses between two ecotypes of Plantago lanceolata L. had previously been studied in a greenhouse. In the present experiment, F2 plants were transplanted into their original habitats (a hayfield and a pasture). Six allozyme loci were used as markers in the analysis of survival and performance of the segregating genotypes. Fitness differences between the plants were large enough to detect natural selection. In both transplantation sites selection appeared to operate, though in different ways. In the hayfield habitat directional selection was hypothesized and both survival and performance of the plants were related to genotype, with the genotypes originating from the hayfield almost always performing better. In the pasture habitat where the habitat is not uniform and unpredictable hazardous droughts occur, survival was nearly genotype independent and environmentally determined, whereas performance of the plants was genotype dependent. The expression of two morphological characteristics, number of leaves and leaf length, was often not in concordance with the greenhouse results and was contradictory in both sites. Expression of both characters in the field, therefore, appeared to be strongly dependent on the general performance and growth conditions of the plant and not on the genotype.Grassland Species Research Group Publication no. 143  相似文献

Synopsis The spatial patchiness at age was measured for Pacific herring,Clupea harengus pallasi, larvae of a small coastal inlet. Lloyd's index of patchiness decreased from 3.8 at hatching to a minimum of 1.5 at 25–30 d and then increased to 2.5 at 50 d. This two-cycle pattern resembles that measured by others for the larvae of other species of schooling pelagic fishes. It differs by being several times lower in magnitude. This is attributed to two factors: (1) a rapid reduction in patchiness from a relatively high level in the demersal egg interval to a lower level in the planktonic larval interval as larvae are released into the water column over a period of 2–4 days, and (2) foraging by larval herring for prey that are larger, more dilute, and less patchy than the prey of other, smaller pelagic fish larvae.  相似文献
