We compared intraoral prey transport in venomous snake species from four families (two atractaspidids, nine elapids, three colubrids, 44 viperids) with that in eight non-venomous colubrid species, most feeding on similar mammalian prey. The morphology of the venom delivery system suggests that intraoral prey transport performance should be slightly decreased in atractaspidids, unmodified in most elapids and venomous colubrids, and increased or unmodified in vipers, as compared to that in non-venomous colubrid snakes. Our measurements of relative intraoral prey transport performance show that differences among families do not match expectations based on morphology or past studies. Decreased performance in Atractaspis results from reduction and loss of teeth on the medial palatal elements and dentaries, but affects only early phases of ingestion. Although joint and bone features of elapids and colubrids are similar, intraoral prey transport performance is significantly lower in elapids than in colubrids. Predicted enhancement of intraoral prey transport performance in vipers as compared to colubrids was not borne out by measurements, presumably because palatopterygoid movement during intraoral prey transport is reduced in many viper species to limit fang erection. Absence of significant performance differences between colubrids and viperids might suggest that evolution of the viperid venom delivery system was subject to little selection pressure from intraoral prey transport. Another possibility is that there are trade-offs between intraoral prey transport and strike performance in vipers related to relative skull mass and jaw fragility. Immobilizing prey prior to intraoral transport places less demand on transport performance in vipers. In this model, the conservative kinesis and greater robustness of the colubrid palate has greater potential for transporting live prey with less risk of injury.  相似文献

We explored variations in the morphology and function of the envenomation system in the four families of snakes comprising the Colubroidea (Viperidae, Elapidae, Atractaspididae, and Colubridae) using our own prey capture records and those from the literature. We first described the current knowledge of the morphology and function of venom delivery systems and then explored the functional plasticity found in those systems, focusing on how the propensity of snakes to release prey after the strike is influenced by various ecological parameters. Front-fanged families (Viperidae, Elapidae, and Atractaspididae) differ in the morphology and topographical relationships of the maxilla as well as in the lengths of their dorsal constrictor muscles (retractor vomeris; protractor, retractor, and levator pterygoidei; protractor quadrati), which move the bones comprising the upper jaw, giving some viperids relatively greater maxillary mobility compared to that of other colubroids. Rear-fanged colubrids vary in maxillary rotation capabilities, but most have a relatively unmodified palatal morphology compared to non-venomous colubrids. Viperids launch rapid strikes at prey, whereas elapids and colubrids use a variety of behaviors to grab prey. Viperids and elapids envenomate prey by opening their mouth and rotating both maxillae to erect their fangs. Both fangs are embedded in the prey by a bite that often results in some retraction of the maxilla. In contrast, Atractaspis (Atractaspididae) envenomates prey by extruding a fang unilaterally from its closed mouth and stabbing it into the prey by a downward-backwards jerk of its head. Rear-fanged colubrids envenomate prey by repeated unilateral or bilateral raking motions of one or both maxillae, some aspects of which are kinematically similar to the envenomation behavior in Atractaspis. The envenomation behavior, including the strike and prey release behaviors, varies within families as a function of prey size and habitat preference. Rear-fanged colubrids, arboreal viperids, and elapids tend to hold on to their prey after striking it, whereas atractaspidids and many terrestrial viperids release their prey after striking it. Larger prey are more frequently released than smaller prey by terrestrial front-fanged species. Venom delivery systems demonstrate a range of kinematic patterns that are correlated to sometimes only minor modifications of a common morphology of the jaw apparatus. The kinematics of the jaw apparatus are correlated with phylogeny, but also show functional plasticity relating to habitat and prey.  相似文献

To date, 21 species of the genus Angiostrongylus (Nematoda: Angiostrongylidae) have been reported around the world, 15 of which are parasites of rodents. In this study, new host, geographic records, and histopathologic studies of Angiostrongylus spp in sigmodontine rodents from Argentina, with an updated summary of records from rodent hosts and host specificity assessment, are provided. Records of Angiostrongylus costaricensis from Akodon montensis andAngiostrongylus morerai from six new hosts and geographical localities in Argentina are reported. The gross and histopathologic changes in the lungs of the host species due to angiostrongylosis are described. Published records of the genus Angiostrongylus from rodents and patterns of host specificity are presented. Individual Angiostrongylusspecies parasitise between one-19 different host species. The most frequent values of the specificity index (STD) were between 1-5.97. The elevated number of host species (n = 7) of A. morerai with a STD = 1.86 is a reflection of multiple systematic studies of parasites from sigmodontine rodents in the area of Cuenca del Plata, Argentina, showing that an increase in sampling effort can result in new findings. The combination of low host specificity and a wide geographic distribution of Angiostrongylus spp indicates a troubling epidemiological scenario although, as yet, no human cases have been reported.  相似文献

Tests using magpie's eggs (which are very similar to those of the great spotted cuckoo) on azure-winged magpies (Cyanopica cyanea) showed that the latter accept strange eggs, rejecting only 25% of them. We therefore suggest that they are an accepter species, and as such a substitute host species for the great spotted cuckoo (Clamator glandarius). We suggest a theory for the transition from ‘Accepter Species’ to ‘Non-mimetic-egg Rejecter Species’ by hosts of specialist brood parasites. We have obtained evidence of host recognition by great spotted cuckoo chicks of typical or atypical host species characteristics. Basing our theory on the calls of parasitic chicks reared in the nests of the azure-winged magpies and magpies (Pica pica), we suggest that the foregoing is the mating mechanism necessary for the parasitization of a new host species.  相似文献

New host records (all members of the family Tephritidae) are presented for 14 newly described species of opiine Braconidae from the neotropics and two previously described species, one from the neotropics and one from the Nearctic Region. Doryctobracon anneae Wharton, Opius baderae Wharton, O. baeblus Wharton, O. cablus Wharton, O. dablus Wharton, O. danielsae Wharton, O. gabriellae Wharton, O. godfrayi Wharton, O. marshi Wharton, O. nablus Wharton, O. pipitae Wharton, O. stecki Wharton, O. taramegillae Wharton, and O. yoderi Wharton are newly described. Hosts are newly recorded for the previously described species Opius nympha Fischer and O. peleus Fischer. A key is presented to Opiinae that have been reared from flower, stem, and leaf feeding tephritids in the New World. The tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is considered to be a major pest that damages tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L; Solanaceae) crops in South American, European, and Mediterranean countries. This insect species is polyphagous (i.e., feeds on many types of food); hence, it could also develop on other cultivated host plants, principally solanaceous plants, such as potato (S. tuberosum L.; Solanaceae) and eggplant (S. melongena L.; Solanaceae). Therefore, we tested the hypothesis that host plant choice by adult T. absoluta is influenced by plant volatile organic compounds and larval host plant experience. One tomato cultivar (cv.) ‘Moneymaker’ and three potato cv. ‘Charlotte’ ‘Bintje,’ and ‘Nicola’ were tested. Using a flying tunnel, we observed that females reared on tomato preferred flying toward tomato and, to a lesser extent, potato cv. ‘Charlotte.’ These preferences might be explained by the high release of terpenes by these two plants. When conducting oviposition choice assays, we found no preference between tomato and potato in the number of eggs laid by females that had been previously reared on either host plant. This study indicates that the host finding behavior of T. absoluta is mediated by solanaceous volatiles, while oviposition behavior appears to depend on additional stimuli. These results provide baseline information for use in the development of new control strategies against T. absoluta using semiochemicals and plant breeding.  相似文献

Metal (Pb, Zn and Fe2+) tolerances, root anatomy and profile of radial oxygen loss (ROL) along the root (i.e., spatial pattern of ROL) were studied in 10 emergent wetland plants. The species studied could be classified into three groups. Group I included Alternanthera philoxeroides, Beckmannia syzigachne, Oenanthe javanica and Polypogon fugax, with high ROL along the whole length of root (‘partial barrier’ to ROL). Group II included Cyperus flabelliformis, Cyperus malaccensis, Juncus effusus, Leersia hexandra and Panicum paludosum, ROL of which was remarkably high just behind the root apex, but decreased significantly at relatively basal regions (‘tight barrier’ to ROL). Group III consisted of only Neyraudia reynaudiana, with extremely low ROL along the length of root. The results indicated that metal tolerance in wetland plants was related to root anatomy and spatial pattern of ROL. Co-evolution of metal (Fe and Zn) tolerance and flood tolerance possibly developed in wetland plants since species showing a ‘tight barrier’ to ROL (a common trait of flood-tolerant species) in basal root zones had higher Fe and Zn tolerances than those showing a ‘partial barrier’. Root anatomy such as lignin and suberin deposition contributed to a ‘tight barrier’ in root and conferred to exclusion ability in tolerant species.  相似文献

A parsimony analysis of parts of the mitochondrial genes 12S and 16S (722 base pairs) from 43 species of the advanced snakes (Caenophidia) resulted in two most parsimonious topologies. Based on a strict consensus of these the following objectives were addressed: (1) Which groupings of caenophidian taxa can be recognized? (2) Is Acrochordus sister group to, or included in, Caenophidia? (3) Are boigine snakes (sensu stricto) a monophyletic grouping and where do these taxa belong in a broader caenophidian context? (4) What are the systematic affinities of the African egg-eating genusDasypeltis ? The phylogeny was then used to discuss: (5) the evolution of the posterior maxillary dentition and the composition of the retinal visual cells. The results reveal that, when using Boa constrictor as outgroup,Acrochordus is the sistergroup to the remainder of the ingroup, and a further eight clades are defined. Five genera of elapids did not appear to be monophyletic and a number of colubrids (sensu lato) such as Mehelya,Lycodonomorphus , Lamprophis, Atractaspis, and Buhoma (formerly Geodipsas), which have traditionally been problematic to place systematically, did not group with any of the larger clades. These taxa are together with the elapids representatives of very early radiations in the evolution of the Advanced snakes. The homalopsine Enhydris enhydris appears as a sistergroup to the viperine clade (Clade 1). When plotted onto the topology the posterior maxillary dentition appear to express three, maybe four, independent origins of the Opistoglyph State. The retinal evolution also appeared very complex. The suggested very primitive placing of the Boigine snakes (sensu stricto) due to their lack of double cones in the retina of the eye was not supported here; instead the sequence data suggests this observation to be the result of a secondary loss.  相似文献

Portions of two mitochondrial genes (12S and 16S ribosomal RNA) were sequenced to determine the phylogenetic relationships among the major clades of snakes. Thirty-six species, representing nearly all extant families, were examined and compared with sequences of a tuatara and three families of lizards. Snakes were found to constitute a monophyletic group (confidence probability [CP] = 96%), with the scolecophidians (blind snakes) as the most basal lineages (CP = 99%). This finding supports the hypothesis that snakes underwent a subterranean period early in their evolution. Caenophidians (advanced snakes), excluding Acrochordus, were found to be monophyletic (CP = 99%). Among the caenophidians, viperids were monophyletic (CP = 98%) and formed the sister group to the elapids plus colubrids (CP = 94%). Within the viperids, two monophyletic groups were identified: true vipers (CP = 98%) and pit vipers plus Azemiops (CP = 99%). The elapids plus Atractaspis formed a monophyletic clade (CP = 99%). Within the paraphyletic Colubridae, the largely Holarctic Colubrinae was found to be a monophyletic assemblage (CP = 98%), and the Xenodontinae was found to be polyphyletic (CP = 91%). Monophyly of the henophidians (primitive snakes) was neither supported nor rejected because of the weak resolution of relationships among those taxa, except for the clustering of Calabaria with a uropeltid, Rhinophis (CP = 94%).   相似文献

Structures of the wings, legs and abdomen of three new species of Jurassic ‘Orthophlebiidae’ from Karatau in Kazachstan (Orthophlebia elenae, O. heidemariae, O. longicauda) are described in detail. On their hind legs, the males of two of the species have a so-called metatarsal organ of unknown function, which certainly is a synapomorphy.Orthophlebia longicauda is very similar to the Tertiary speciesHolcorpa maculosa, as they both possess a fork consisting of two long processes arising from the hind margin of abdominal segment 6 as well as an elongate abdomen. A female specimen ofO. elenae shows, in its 9th abdominal segment, the medigynium, a genital structure of major importance for reconstructing the phylogenetic position of Mecoptera. As in the Panorpodidae andHolcorpa, the medigynium ofO. elenae does not bear two tongue-shaped processes which are characteristic of the Panorpidae. This is the first time that female genitalia are described from a Mesozoic mecopteran species. The males of the three new species show the tergites and sternites of abdominal segments 6 to 8 to be unfused or incompletely fused, as the sclerites’ margins are still visible. This implies that contrary to earlier assumptions, completely fused sclerites in segment 8 leaving no trace of their delimitations are not a synapomorphy of the Panorpomorpha (= Eomeropidae,Apteropanorpa, Choristidae,Choristopanorpa and ‘Orthophlebiidae’ plus descendants).  相似文献

1 The fecundity, longevity and establishment of Otiorhynchus sulcatus and Otiorhynchus ovatus from the Pacific North‐west U.S.A. was studied on five selected host plants: Picea abies‘Nidiformis’, Picea glauca‘Conica’, Taxus baccata, Rhododendron catawbiense‘Boursault’ and Fragaria×ananassa‘Totem’. 2 Teneral adults were used to study adult longevity and reproductive success. Leaves of these host plants were used for sustenance for 9 months. Larval establishment was studied by infesting potted host plants with eggs. 3 Fragaria×ananassa‘Totem’ produced the longest survival, shortest preoviposition time, the greatest number of eggs, and the highest fertility for adults of both species. Picea spp. were not good adult hosts for O. sulcatus. Taxus was a good adult host for O. sulcatus, but was a nonhost for adults and larvae of O. ovatus. 4 Adult hosts did not affect preoviposition time or egg viability with O. ovatus adults. With O. sulcatus, preoviposition time was greatly increased and egg viability was < 50% on Picea spp. 5 The best larval host was F.×ananassa‘Totem’ for O. sulcatus and P. glauca‘Conica’ for O. ovatus. Rhododendron was a poor larval host for both species. 6 When all of the studies on these two pests are considered, O. sulcatus appears to have varying host preferences from among its many geographical areas of occurrence whereas O. ovatus has a more universal host selection.  相似文献

Ophidascaris species are parasitic roundworms that inhabit the python gut, resulting in severe granulomatous lesions or even death. However, the classification and nomenclature of these roundworms are still controversial. Our study aims to identify a snake roundworm from the Burmese python (Python molurus bivittatus) and analyze the mitochondrial genome. We identified this roundworm as Ophidascaris baylisi based on the morphology and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (cox1) sequence. Ophidascaris baylisi complete mitochondrial genome was 14,784 bp in length, consisting of two non-coding regions and 36 mitochondrial genes (12 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, and two rRNA genes). The protein-coding genes used TTG, ATG, ATT, or TTA as start codons and TAG, TAA, or T as stop codons. All tRNA genes showed a TV-loop structure, except trnS1AGN and trnS2UCN revealed a D-loop structure. The mitochondrial large ribosomal subunit 16S (rrnL) and small ribosomal subunit 12S (rrnS) were 956 bp and 700 bp long, respectively. Phylogenetic analysis based on O. baylisi mitochondrial protein-coding genes demonstrated that O. baylisi clustered with the family Ascarididae members and was most closely related to Ophidascaris wangi. These results may enhance the nematode mitochondrial genome database and provide valuable molecular markers for further research on the taxonomy, phylogeny, and genetic relationships of Ophidascaris nematodes.  相似文献

Phylogenetic relationships among genera of African colubrids were evaluated using estimates of divergence among serum albumins compared by microcomplement fixation. Representatives of about half of the extant genera of African colubrids, as well as the Elapidae, Atractaspis and the Madagascan colubrid Leioheterodon, were analysed. The tree of best fit to the data has an unresolved basal polychotomy comprising at least five lineages of colubrids, as well as Elapidae and Atractaspis; thus, colubrids were not demonstrably monophyletic with these data. Two cosmopolitan clades, colubrines and natricines, are represented in Africa by series of closely related genera, but divergence among other genera is relatively great. Rate tests show that this is apparently not due to higher rates of albumin evolution in these, relative to other colubrids. Among the other associations supported by the immunological data are: (1) Psammophis-(Rhamphiophis-Dipsina)-Malpolon-Psammophylax; (2) Amblyodipsas-Macrelaps; (3) (Lycodonomorphus-Lamprophis)-Mehelya; and (4) Colubrinae-Natricinae. Grayia is questionably associated with the colubrine-natricine lineage. Prosymna and Lycodon are clearly members of the colubrine clade, and Amplorhinus possibly associates with Leioheterodon. Gonionotophis, Duherria, Lycophidion and Pseudaspis show no strong association with any other genera, and represent other basal or near-basal clades within the colubrid/elapid radiation. The immunological data do not support a clade comprising the Elapidae, Atractaspis and some ‘aparallactines’ relative to Viperidae and other colubrids. The basal colubrid-elapid-Atractaspis divergence occurred more than 30 Myr ago, and the fossil record of colubrids in Africa greatly underestimates both the age and clade diversity of this group. In contrast to the pattern of radiation in the neotropics, where most colubrids belong to one of three major clades, in Africa only the colubrine lineage comprises a substantial portion of the extant generic diversity; most other genera stem from relatively ancient cladogenetic events and have few living representatives.  相似文献

The ubiquitous freshwater pathogen Saprolegnia parasitica has long been considered a true generalist, capable of infecting a wide range of fish species. It remains unclear, however, whether different isolates of this pathogen, obtained from distinct geographic locations and host species, display differences in host preference. To assess this, the current study examined the induced zoospore encystment responses of four S. parasitica isolates towards the skin of four fish species. While three of the isolates displayed ‘specialist’ responses, one appeared to be more of a ‘generalist’. In vivo challenge infections involving salmon and sea trout with the ‘generalist’ (salmon isolate EA001) and a ‘specialist’ (sea trout isolate EA016) pathogen, however, did not support the in vitro findings, with no apparent host preference reflected in infection outcomes. Survival of sea trout and salmon though was significantly different following a challenge infection with the sea trout (EA016) isolate. These results indicate that while S. parasitica isolates can be considered true generalists, they may target hosts to which they have been more frequently exposed (potential local adaptation). Understanding host preference of this pathogen could aid our understanding of infection epidemics and help with the development of fish management procedures.  相似文献

During an investigation of the insect food web in Papua New Guinea several specimens of a new genus and species of large, black and orange braconine braconid wasp were reared from fruits of Rubiaceae. These are described here as Karposibracon papuensis Quicke & Butcher gen. et sp. nov. Karposibracon gen. nov. appears to belong to the tribe Braconini and is the largest known species in this group, with body length up to 12?mm. The new genus is illustrated photographically, distinguished from other genera, and comments are on its likely biology provided.  相似文献

Kudoa spp. from the musculature and intestinal mucosa of species of the teleost family Apogonidae were examined for their taxonomic identity. Two novel species are characterised: Kudoa cheilodipteri n. sp. from the musculature of Cheilodipterus quinquelineatus Cuvier, Ostorhinchus cyanosoma (Bleeker) and O. aureus (Lacépède); and Kudoa cookii n. sp. from the submucosa of the intestines of O. cookii (Macleay) only. Both species are characterised using morphology, small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA), large subunit ribosomal DNA (LSU rDNA), and biological characters. Three new host records, O. cyanosoma, O. aureus and Apogon doederleini, and associated geographical, morphological and genetic data are also provided for Kudoa whippsi Burger & Adlard, 2010. Morphological and molecular intra-specific variation of all isolates assigned to K. whippsi is also examined. Phylogenetic analyses further support the idea that tissue tropism is a distinguishing character between morphologically similar species; species reported here display close relatedness to morphologically similar species infecting the same tissue within their hosts.  相似文献

In response to increasing efforts for reducing concentrate inputs to organic dairy production in grassland-rich areas of Europe, a long-term study was conducted, which assessed the impacts of concentrate reductions on cows’ performance, health, fertility and average herd age. In total, 42 Swiss commercial organic dairy cattle farms were monitored over 6 years (‘Y0’, 2008/09 until ‘Y5’, 2013/14). In comparison with overall data of Swiss herdbooks (including conventional and organic farms), the herds involved in the project had lower milk yields, similar milk solids, shorter calving intervals and higher average lactation numbers. During the first 3 project years farmers reduced the concentrate proportion (i.e. cereals, oilseeds and grain legumes) in the dairy cows’ diets to varying degrees. In Y0, farms fed between 0% and 6% (dietary dry matter proportion per year) of concentrates. During the course of the study they changed the quantity of concentrates to voluntarily chosen degrees. Retrospectively, farms were clustered into five farm groups: Group ‘0-conc’ (n=6 farms) already fed zero concentrates in Y0 and stayed at this level. Group ‘Dec-to0’ (n=11) reduced concentrates to 0 during the project period. Groups ‘Dec-strong’ (n=8) and ‘Dec-slight’ (n=12) decreased concentrate amounts by >50% and <50%, respectively. Group ‘Const-conc’ (n=5 farms) remained at the initial level of concentrates during the project. Milk recording data were summarised and analysed per farm and project year. Lactation number and calving intervals were obtained from the databases of the Swiss breeders’ associations. Dietary concentrate amounts and records of veterinary treatments were obtained from the obligatory farm documentations. Data were analysed with GLMs. Daily milk yields differed significantly between farm groups already in Y0, being lowest in groups 0-conc (16.0 kg) and Dec-to0 (16.7 kg), and highest in groups Dec-slight (19.6 kg) and Const-conc (19.2 kg). Milk yield decreases across the years within groups were not significant, but urea contents in milk decreased significantly during the course of the project. Milk protein, somatic cell score, fat–protein ratio, average lactation number, calving interval and frequency of veterinary treatments did not differ by group and year. In conclusion, 5 years of concentrate reduction in low-input Swiss organic dairy farms, affected neither milk composition, nor fertility and veterinary treatments. Milk yields tended to decline, but at a low rate per saved kilogram of concentrate.  相似文献
