An example of ecosystem engineering gaining attention in aquatic systems is bioturbation, the disruption of sediment at the water–sediment interface due to burrowing and foraging. One consequence of bioturbation can be increased turbidity from suspended sediment, which generally inhibits macrophyte growth and reduces ecosystem functioning. Conversely, bioturbation may promote invertebrate species richness by unearthing dormant cysts. Temporary-pond crustaceans are not widely regarded as agents of bioturbation, but on the basis of aquaria observations we hypothesized that certain taxa can disturb the sediment and create highly turbid water. We tested this hypothesis by removing crustaceans from mesocosms lined with vernal pool soil. Compared to this treatment group, mesocosms containing crustaceans had extremely high turbidity from suspended sediment, as well as reduced total macrophyte cover. We also found clear compositional differences in macrophyte communities between treatments, driven largely by differences in water physicochemistry, including turbidity. Regression analysis linked most of the bioturbation to the endangered notostracan Lepidurus packardi Simon 1886, which was a strong predictor of turbidity in our mesocosms. We also found a trend toward increased crustacean species richness in our mesocosms in the presence of this taxon. An analysis of published data from King et al. (1996) suggests that this trend may extend to natural vernal pools. Overall, our results suggest that L. packardi may have large effects on vernal pool communities, likely mediated in part through its disturbing of the sediment.  相似文献

In California, much of the remaining vernal pool habitat is used for cattle grazing. Some studies suggest that grazing helps promote native plant diversity on grasslands, but the impact of grazing on plants that reside in pool basins is largely unknown. We investigated how one aspect of cattle grazing, the deposition of waste, affects these plant species by adding dung and urine to mesocosms lined with vernal pool soil. As a result of dung input, orthophosphate, conductivity, and turbidity increased in our mesocosms while dissolved oxygen decreased. Such changes in water quality are consistent with a shift toward a eutrophic state. Algal biomass and percent-cover also increased in dung-treated mesocosms. When the mesocosms dried, vascular plant species richness and percent-cover in dung-treated mesocosms were reduced by up to 54% and 87%, respectively. We attribute this to light attenuation by algal mats that flourished in the nutrient-enriched water. We also found that dung input caused significant, but weak, shifts in the composition of the vascular plant community. We conclude that cattle grazing may be detrimental to plant communities in vernal pools via increased nutrient loading, which promotes algal growth. Any beneficial effects of grazing may thus be limited to the surrounding grassland. Studies that examine the regional-scale impacts of grazing on vernal pool grasslands should separately consider the impacts to local-scale (i.e., within-pool) plant diversity, as most of the threatened and endangered plant species of California vernal pools reside primarily in pool basins.  相似文献

A mesocosm study was conducted to determine the effects of variable salinity and light on Vallisneria americana Michx. (wild celery) and associated algal community components in the lower St. Johns River, Florida. Fifteen centimeter diameter intact plant plugs were collected from the LSJR in March 2001 and transported to mesocosm facilities in Lafayette, Louisiana. A factorial experimental design was used consisting of three salinity levels (1, 8, and 18 ppt), three light levels (0, 50, and 90% shading), and three replicate mesocosms of each for a total of 27 mesocosms. The experiment consisted of a 4-week acclimation period followed by a 5-month treatment period. V. americana responded negatively to increased salinity. Although V. americana survived 8 ppt salinity, growth was limited. At 18 ppt, almost all V. americana aboveground biomass had perished within 10 weeks, but when salinity was lowered back to 1 ppt, approximately 20% of the aboveground biomass recovered within the following 10 weeks. At midtreatment harvest, light did not affect V. americana biomass directly (P = 0.8240), but by final harvest (20 weeks) light affected belowground biomass (P < 0.0014). Both salinity and light affected algal growth. Macroalgae dominated 1 ppt salinity treatments in ambient light, but phytoplankton dominated 8 and 18 ppt salinity treatments in ambient light. Algal communities were greatly inhibited by 90% shading. While salinity directly impacted V. americana growth and survival, light effects were less direct and involved algal community associations.  相似文献

Empirical research in streams has demonstrated that terrestrial subsidies of tree leaf litter influence multiple community factors including composition, diversity and growth of individuals. However, little research has examined the importance of tree litter species on wetlands, which are ubiquitous across the landscape and serve as important habitats for a unique and diverse community of organisms. Using outdoor mesocosms, we assessed the impact of 12 litter monocultures and three litter mixtures (from both broadleaf and conifer trees) on pond communities containing gray tree frog tadpoles Hyla versicolor, periphyton, phytoplankton and zooplankton. We found that leaf litter species had substantial and differential impacts on all trophic groups in the community including effects on algal abundance, zooplankton density and amphibian growth. In many instances, patterns of responses were specific to individual litter species yet some responses, including both pH values and periphyton biomass, were generalizable to broad taxonomic groups. In addition, while most responses of litter mixtures were additive, we found evidence for antagonistic effects of litter mixing among responses of periphyton and amphibian body mass. Our results highlight the potential impact of human and naturally driven changes in forest composition on wetland communities through associated changes in leaf litter.  相似文献

1. Manipulative experiments were carried out in four Hong Kong streams (two shaded, two unshaded) to investigate the impact of grazing by an algivorous fish, Pseudogastromyzon myersi, on benthic algal biomass and assemblage composition. Experiments were conducted and repeated during both the dry and wet seasons to determine whether spate‐induced disturbance modified any grazing effect. Treatments comprised fish exclusion and inclusion via closed and open cages, with a no‐cage treatment used as a control for the cage effect. Treatments were maintained for 4 weeks in each experimental run. 2. Grazing by P. myersi reduced benthic algal biomass and the organic matter content of periphyton in open cages and the no‐cage treatment relative to closed cages. The similarity between open‐cage and no‐cage treatments was evidence that the overall difference among treatments was caused by limiting fish access to closed cages and not merely an artifact of caging. Grazing effects were broadly similar in all streams, but there was a significant statistical interaction between treatments and seasons. 3. Analysis of dry‐season data matched the overall trend in inter‐treatment differences, confirming the effects of grazing by P. myersi on algal biomass and periphyton organic matter. Significant differences in algal assemblage composition between closed‐cage and no‐cage treatments during the dry season reflected reductions in the abundance of erect, stalked diatoms (Gomphonema) and filamentous cyanobacteria (Homeothrix). Removal of these vulnerable overstorey algae by P. myersi resulted in greater abundance of understorey diatoms (Achnanthes and Cocconeis) in the no‐cage treatment in all streams during the dry season. The composition of algal assemblages in open cages was intermediate between the other two treatments. 4. Although fish densities were greater in all streams during the wet season, spate‐induced disturbance obscured grazing effects and there were no significant differences among treatments attributable to fish grazing. Seasonal variation in impacts of P. myersi grazing provides support for the harsh‐benign hypothesis, and confirms that biotic factors are less important controls of stream algal biomass and assemblage structure during periods (i.e. the wet season in Hong Kong) when abiotic disturbances are frequent or intense.  相似文献

The aphids Lipaphis erysimi pseudobrassicae (Davis) and Myzus persicae (Sulzer) pose serious threats to the production of cruciferous crops in the tropics. Understanding their population dynamics is important for developing integrated pest management programmes to minimize their damage to crops. This study investigated the effects of climatic factors, natural enemies and plant age on the population dynamics of these pests. The population density of aphids and their natural enemies in 20 cabbage plants, and weather conditions were monitored for five cropping seasons from 2019 to 2021 in two agroecological zones of Ghana (Coastal Savannah and Deciduous Forest zones). The highest population density of L. e pseudobrassicae was recorded in January (dry season) in both agroecological zones, while the highest population density for M. persicae occurred in September (minor rainy season) and August (dry spell) in the Coastal Savannah and Deciduous Forest zones, respectively. The highest aphid densities were noted to occur during periods with low relative humidity and low rainfall. The population density of L. e. pseudobrassicae was significantly negatively related to plant age, air temperature and relative humidity, and positively related to syrphids (Paragus borbonicus) and spiders in the Coastal Savannah zone, while in the Deciduous Forest zone, it was significantly positively related to coccinellids. On the other hand, M. persicae population density was significantly positively related to syrphids and coccinellids in the Deciduous Forest zone. Rainfall negatively affected syrphids in the Coastal Savannah zone, while air temperature positively affected syrphids and negatively affected spiders in the Deciduous Forest zone. Coccinellids had a significant positive relationship with relative humidity in the Deciduous Forest zone. This study provides important insights into the key factors that regulate aphid population densities on cabbage and will support development of timely interventions to manage these pests.  相似文献

The arthropod assemblages of the litter and soil play significant roles in decomposition and nutrient cycling. At the FACE (Free-Air CO2 Enrichment) site at the Duke Forest, we assessed the responses of the litter microarthropod assemblage to elevated CO2 (200 ppm above ambient) in a loblolly pine plantation. Following the initiation of the elevated CO2 treatment, a trend toward lower microarthropod abundance under elevated CO2 emerged. After 18 months, the mean microarthropod abundance was 33% lower in the elevated treatment (P=0.04). The decline was evident in all microarthropod groups, but was significant only in the oribatid mites (P=0.04). Because these responses precede any changes in litter quality resulting from the CO2 treatment, they may reflect plant-derived changes in the soil that are being conveyed into the litter layer.  相似文献

Aim This modern pollen‐rain study documents the spatial and quantitative relationships between modern pollen and vegetation in Mongolia, and explores the potential for using this relationship in palaeoclimatic reconstructions. Location East‐central Mongolia. Methods We collected 104 pollen surface samples along a south–north transect across five vegetation zones in Mongolia. Discriminant analysis was used to classify the modern pollen spectra into five pollen assemblages corresponding to the five vegetation zones. Hierarchical cluster analysis was used to divide the main pollen taxa into two major groups and seven subgroups representing the dry and moist vegetation types and the main vegetation communities within them. Results Each vegetation zone along the transect can be characterized by a distinctive modern pollen assemblage as follows: (1) desert zone: Chenopodiaceae–Zygophyllaceae–Nitraria–Poaceae pollen assemblage; (2) desert‐steppe zone: Poaceae–Chenopodiaceae pollen assemblage; (3) steppe zone: ArtemisiaAster‐type–Poaceae–Pinus Haploxylon‐type pollen assemblage; (4) forest‐steppe zone: Pinus Haploxylon‐type–PiceaArtemisiaBetula, montane forb/shrub and pteridophyte pollen assemblage; and (5) mountain taiga zone: Pinus Haploxylon‐type–Picea–Poaceae–Cyperaceae, montane forb/shrub and Pteridophyte pollen assemblage. Main conclusions Based on the ratio between the major pollen taxon groups and subgroups, we propose two pollen–climate indices that represent the precipitation and temperature conditions in the study region. When plotted along our south–north transect, the moisture indices (M) and temperature indices (T) mimic the regional gradients of precipitation and temperature across Mongolia very closely. These pollen–climate indices can be used for palaeoclimatic reconstruction based on fossil pollen data.  相似文献

Three treatments of zinc (0.05, 0.5, 1.0 mg Zn l−1) and a control could be identified by different algal communities in outdoor, flow-through, stream mesocosms. Established communities were continuously exposed to Zn, and samples were collected on days 0, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 30 after treatment began. Experiments were conducted in spring, summer, and fall 1984. Control stream mesocosms could be identified by diatoms in all seasons. The 0.05 mg Zn l−1 treatment could be identified by certain diatom taxa being more abundant than in the control in all seasons and by a filamentous green alga in summer and fall. The 0.5 mg Zn l−1 treatment could be identified by a filamentous green alga in fall. The 1.0 mg Zn l−1 treatment was dominated by unicellular green algae in all seasons and by a filamentous blue-green alga in summer. A similarity index (SIMI) indicated that Zn-stressed samples generally became less similar to control samples as Zn concentration increased from 0.05 to 1.0 mg Zn l−1. Total biovolume-density of all taxa responded slower than individual taxa in spring and failed to distinguish between Zn treatments in summer and fall. Zinc bound to periphyton was much better than total Zn in water for identifying Zn treatments. Zinc treatments as low as 0.05 mg Zn l−1 changed algal species composition despite 0.047 mg Zn l−1 being the Criterion of the US Environmental Protection Agency for the 24-h average of total recoverable Zn.  相似文献

It is widely accepted that global warming will adversely affect ecological communities. As ecosystems are simultaneously exposed to other anthropogenic influences, it is important to address the effects of climate change in the context of many stressors. Nutrient enrichment might offset some of the energy demands that warming can exert on organisms by stimulating growth at the base of the food web. It is important to know whether indirect effects of warming will be as ecologically significant as direct physiological effects. Declining body size is increasingly viewed as a universal response to warming, with the potential to alter trophic interactions. To address these issues, we used an outdoor array of marine mesocosms to examine the impacts of warming, nutrient enrichment and altered top‐predator body size on a community comprised of the predator (shore crab Carcinus maenas), various grazing detritivores (amphipods) and algal resources. Warming increased mortality rates of crabs, but had no effect on their moulting rates. Nutrient enrichment and warming had near diametrically opposed effects on the assemblage, confirming that the ecological effects of these two stressors can cancel each other out. This suggests that nutrient‐enriched systems might act as an energy refuge to populations of species under metabolic constraints due to warming. While there was a strong difference in assemblages between mesocosms containing crabs compared to mesocosms without crabs, decreasing crab size had no detectable effect on the amphipod or algal assemblages. This suggests that in allometrically balanced communities, the expected long‐term effect of warming (declining body size) is not of similar ecological consequence to the direct physiological effects of warming, at least not over the six week duration of the experiment described here. More research is needed to determine the long‐term effects of declining body size on the bioenergetic balance of natural communities.  相似文献

  1. Periphyton communities associated with submerged plant detritus contain interacting autotrophic and heterotrophic microbes, and are sites of extracellular enzymatic activity. The strength and nature of these interactions might be expected to change over time as microbial communities develop on plant litter. Microbial interactions and enzymatic activity can be altered by nutrient availability, suggesting that litter stoichiometry could also affect these phenomena.
  2. We grew wetland plants under ambient and nutrient-enriched conditions to generate plant litter of differing nutrient content. In two experiments, we investigated: (1) the influence of algal photosynthesis on fungal and bacterial production and the activities of four extracellular enzymes throughout a 54-day period of microbial colonisation and growth; and (2) the influence of litter stoichiometry on these relationships.
  3. Ambient and nutrient-enriched standing-dead plant litter was collected and then submerged in wetland pools to allow for natural microbial colonisation and growth. Litter samples were periodically retrieved and transported to the laboratory for experiments manipulating photosynthesis using the photosystem II inhibitor DCMU (which effectively prevents algal photosynthetic activity). Algal (14C-bicarbonate), bacterial (3H-leucine), and fungal (14C-acetate) production, and β-glucosidase, β-xylosidase, leucine aminopeptidase, and phosphatase activities (MUF- or AMC-labelled fluorogenic substrates) were measured under conditions of active and inhibited algal photosynthesis.
  4. Photosynthesis stimulated overall fungal and bacterial production in both experiments, although the strength of stimulation varied amongst sampling dates. Phosphatase activity was stimulated by photosynthesis during the first, but not the second, experiment. No other enzymatic responses to short-term photosynthesis manipulations were observed.
  5. Microbial communities on high-nutrient litter occasionally showed increased extracellular enzyme activity, fungal growth rates, and bacterial production compared to communities on non-enriched litter, but algal and fungal production were not affected. Litter stoichiometry had no effects on fungal, bacterial, or enzymatic responses to photosynthesis, but the mean enzyme vector analysis angle (a measure of P- versus N-acquiring enzyme activity) was positively correlated to litter N:P, suggesting that elevated litter N:P led to an increase in the relative activity of P-acquiring enzymes.
  6. These results supported the hypothesis that algal photosynthesis strongly influences heterotrophic microbial activity on macrophyte leaf litter, especially that of fungi, throughout microbial community development. However, the strength of this photosynthetic stimulation does not generally depend on small differences in litter nutrient content.
  7. Stimulation of microbial heterotrophs by algal photosynthesis could drive diurnal shifts in periphyton community and aquatic ecosystem function, as well as linking green (photoautotroph-based) and brown (detrital-based) food webs.

We used wetland mesocosms (1) to experimentally assess whether inoculating a restored wetland site with vegetation/sediment plugs from a natural wetland would alter the development of invertebrate communities relative to unaided controls and (2) to determine if stocking of a poor invertebrate colonizer could further modify community development beyond that due to simple inoculation. After filling mesocosms with soil from a drained and cultivated former wetland and restoring comparable hydrology, mesocosms were randomly assigned to one of three treatments: control (a reference for unaided community development), inoculated (received three vegetation/sediment cores from a natural wetland), and stocked + inoculated (received three cores and were stocked with a poorly dispersing invertebrate group—gastropods). All mesocosms were placed 100 m from a natural wetland and allowed to colonize for 82 days. Facilitation of invertebrate colonization led to communities in inoculated and stocked + inoculated treatments that contrasted strongly with those in the unaided control treatment. Control mesocosms had the highest taxa richness but the lowest diversity due to high densities and dominance of Tanytarsini (Diptera: Chironomidae). Community structure in inoculated and stocked + inoculated mesocosms was more similar to that of a nearby natural wetland, with abundance more evenly distributed among taxa, leading to diversity that was higher than in the control treatment. Inoculated and stocked + inoculated communities were dominated by non‐aerial invertebrates, whereas control mesocosms were dominated by aerial invertebrates. These results suggest that facilitation of invertebrate recruitment does indeed alter invertebrate community development and that facilitation may lead to a more natural community structure in less time under conditions simulating wetland restoration.  相似文献

The influence of nutrient additions and sediment exchange on Aureococcus anophagefferens growth was studied using 200 l mesocosms deployed in situ at the Southampton College Marine Science Center in Long Island, New York. A. anophagefferens cell density increased in mesocosms with separate additions of the following materials: urea + glucose and desiccation-stressed Enteromorpha tissue. A decrease in A. anophagefferens cell density was observed in mesocosms with either no additions (control) or with added nitrate. A treatment containing a sediment layer exhibited an increase in average cell densities, but the increase was not statistically significant (P = 0.15). In the 9 day experiment, net growth of A. anophagefferens was only observed during the last 3 days, which corresponded to a period of high solar irradiation. Total chlorophyll concentration declined in all treatments during the first 6 days, which corresponded to relatively low daily irradiance, suggesting low-light stress on the phytoplankton assemblage during the initial phase of the experiment. During the ensuing sunny period, a 4–5-fold increase in chlorophyll concentration was observed in the nitrate and urea treatments with lesser increases in the other treatments. A. anophagefferens density increased relative to total phytoplankton biomass (Chl basis) in the urea + glucose and Enteromorpha treatments. Results are consistent with a prevailing hypothesis that organic nitrogen nutrients favor the growth of A. anophagefferens. Specifically, our evidence indicates that A. anophagefferens exhibited net population growth under organic N, but not inorganic N nutrient (specifically NO3) loading.  相似文献

When organisms interact in multi‐species groups, the direct effects of facilitation and competition can be modified by indirect interactions. We explored multispecies interactions among the native Pinus ponderosa, the invasive annual grass Bromus tectorum, and the invasive forb Centaurea stoebe in intermountain prairie of the northern Rocky Mountains. Centaurea is much less abundant under Pinus than in surrounding open grassland and Bromus is more abundant under Pinus. We found that the more fertile soil associated with Pinus facilitated both invasive species and did not alter competitive outcomes. Pinus litter and litter leachate inhibited both species, but litter also shifted competitive outcomes in favor of Bromus and against Centaurea. The effects of Pinus litter leachate were also strong and leachate eliminated the competitive effect of Centaurea on Bromus while not changing the competitive effect of Bromus on Centaurea. There are many other ways that Pinus may affect understory composition, but by altering the competitive playing field through leaf litter Pinus appears to indirectly facilitate Bromus by more strongly inhibiting Centaurea chemically, an unusual case of a native inhibiting an invader through allelopathy. Our results also provide an unexpected and novel perspective on indirect interactions among competitors, but not through intransitive competitive relationships. Instead, one species (Pinus) strongly ‘modified’ interactions between two other species in addition to disproportionately affecting one species more than another.  相似文献

Diatoms are important primary producers in shallow water environments. Few studies have assessed the importance of biological interactions in structuring these communities. In the present study, benthic diatom community structure in relation to manipulated food webs was assessed using in situ mesocosms, whereby predator‐free environments and environments comprising two different fish species were assessed. Zooplankton abundance, settled algal biomass and the diatom community were monitored over a 12‐day period across each of the three trophic scenarios. Differences among treatments over time were observed in zooplankton abundances, particularly copepods. Similarly, the benthic diatom community structure changed significantly over time across the three trophic treatments. However, no differences in total algal biomass were found among treatments. This was likely the result of non‐diatom phytoplankton contributions. We propose that the benthic diatom community structure within the mesocosms was influenced by trophic cascades and potentially through direct consumption by the fish. The study highlights that not only are organisms at the base of the food web affected by predators at the top of the food web, but that predator identity is potentially an important consideration for predator–prey interaction outcomes with consequences for multiple trophic levels.

The effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 (ambient + 340 μmol mol–1) on above-ground litter decomposition were investigated over a 6-week period using a field-based mesocosm system. Soil respiratory activity in mesocosms incubated in ambient and elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations were not significantly different (t-test, P > 0.05) indicating that there were no direct effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 on litter decomposition. A study of the indirect effects of CO2 on soil respiration showed that soil mesocosms to which naturally senescent plant litter had been added (0.5% w/w) from the C3 sedge Scirpus olneyi grown in elevated atmospheric CO2 was reduced by an average of 17% throughout the study when compared to soil mesocosms to which litter from Scirpus olneyi grown in ambient conditions had been added. In contrast, similar experiments using senescent material from the C4 grass Spartina patens showed no difference in soil respiration rates between mesocosms to which litter from plants grown in elevated or ambient CO2 conditions had been added. Analysis of the C:N ratio and lignin content of the senescent material showed that, while the C:N ratio and lignin content of the Spartina patens litter did not vary with atmospheric CO2 conditions, the C:N ratio (but not the lignin content) of the litter from Scirpus olneyi was significantly greater (t-test;P < 0.05) when derived from plants grown under elevated CO2 (105:1 compared to 86:1 for litter derived from Scirpus olneyi grown under ambient conditions). The results suggest that the increased C:N ratio of the litter from the C3 plant Scirpus olneyi grown under elevated CO2 led to the lower rates of biodegradation observed as reduced soil respiration in the mesocosms. Further long-term experiments are now required to determine the effects of elevated CO2 on C partitioning in terrestrial ecosystems.  相似文献
