Social dominance influences the outcome of competitive interactionsover limited resources, and may hence be important for individualfitness. Theory thus predicts that its heritability will below and that non-genetic determinants of dominance should prevail.In this field experiment we reciprocally cross-fostered greattits (Parus major) to blue tits (Parus caeruleus) to investigatethe impact of early social experience on dominance status incompetition over food during winter. Controlling for potentialeffects of age, size, sex and site-related dominance, we showthat cross-fostered birds of both species were subdominant toconspecific immigrants, while controls originating from unmanipulatedbroods were dominant to conspecific immigrants. Furthermore,blue tits reared by blue tit parents but with at least one greattit broodmate had lower dominance status relative to conspecificimmigrants than did controls. Although great tits generallydominated blue tits, cross-fostered birds of both species initiatedmarginally more fights against the other species than did theirrespective controls, suggesting faulty species recognition.Since both social parents and broodmates strongly influencethe dominance behavior of offspring later in life, we concludethat social conditions experienced at an early age are crucialfor the determination of subsequent social dominance.  相似文献

Mating success tends to be skewed toward dominant males, thoughfemale mate preferences may not always correlate with male dominance.In this study, we investigated the mating preferences of femalezebrafish, Danio rerio, in the absence of male–male competition.We paired females sequentially with males of known dominancerank, using a nested, repeated measures design, with egg productionas a measure of female mate preference. We predicted that femaleswould spawn more frequently and produce larger clutches whenpaired with males of higher dominance rank. We found significantdifferences among females in the size of clutches produced andamong males in the size of clutches received, but these differenceswere independent of male dominance rank. Male body size wasnot related to either dominance rank or clutch size received.These results indicate that females vary clutch size in relationto the males with which they are paired but that they do notfavor dominant males. Thus, male competition may normally overridefemale mate preference in zebrafish.  相似文献

In many group living animal species, individuals use aggression to gain and maintain social dominance to secure access to ecological resources and potential mates. While social dominance has many fitness benefits, there are also potential costs associated with frequent agonistic interactions and status display. One potential cost of social dominance is oxidative stress, the imbalance of reactive oxygen species and antioxidant capacity. In the cichlid species Astatotilapia burtoni, dominant males are aggressive, hold a breeding territory, and have an activated reproductive system resulting in larger gonads. Subordinate males are submissive, school with females, and are nonreproductive. Females are submissive under natural conditions, but in a female-only group, a dominance hierarchy will form with dominant females taking on male-typical behaviours including aggression, territory defence, and increased androgen levels. However, in contrast to males, social dominance is not linked to increased activation of the reproductive system in females, allowing us to test whether social dominance alone exposes individuals to increased oxidative stress. We compared dominant and subordinate females in female-only groups in five markers of oxidative stress. Dominant females did not have higher levels of oxidative damage compared to same-sex subordinates. This result contrasted to the trend in males in which dominant males had higher oxidative damage than their subordinate counterparts. Our findings suggest that the oxidative cost of social dominance is limited and support the notion that previously reported associations between high rank and increased oxidative stress is most likely driven by increased investment in reproduction.  相似文献

Resting serum cortisol was measured in adult male vervet monkeys (Cercopithicus aethiops sabaeus) in four different conditions: (1) among groups with unaltered group membership and established dominance hierarchies; (2) among groups from which the original dominant male had been removed and in which the remaining males competed for dominant status; (3) among newly formed groups of three unfamiliar males each of which had been the dominant male in his previous group; and (4) among groups from which a dominant male was temporarily separated and returned. In Condition 1, cortisol concentrations did not differ between dominant and subordinate males. The second condition showed that cortisol levels were highest among males who eventually emerged as the dominant male. In the third condition, however, cortisol levels did not differentiate eventually dominant from eventually subordinate males. In the last condition, cortisol levels were highest in the animals that became or remained dominant following reintroduction. These data indicate that cortisol concentration does not differ between dominant and subordinate males in stable groups and that cortisol rises during competition for dominance among familiar males.  相似文献

Individual differences in personality affect behavior in novelor challenging situations. Personality traits may be subjectto selection because they affect the ability to dominate others.We investigated whether dominance rank at feeding tables inwinter correlated with a heritable personality trait (as measuredby exploratory behavior in a novel environment) in a naturalpopulation of great tits, Parus major. We provided clumped resourcesat feeding tables and calculated linear dominance hierarchieson the basis of observations between dyads of color-ringed individuals,and we used an experimental procedure to measure individualexploratory behavior of these birds. We show that fast-exploringterritorial males had higher dominance ranks than did slow-exploringterritorial males in two out of three samples, and that dominancerelated negatively to the distance between the site of observationand the territory. In contrast, fast-exploring nonterritorialjuveniles had lower dominance ranks than did slow-exploringnonterritorial juveniles, implying that the relation betweendominance and personality is context-dependent in the wild.We discuss how these patterns in dominance can explain earlierreported effects of avian personality on natal dispersal andfitness.  相似文献

Social conditions for sex change and reproductive success werestudied in the haremic marine angelfish, Centropyge ferrugatus,in the coral reefs of southern Japan. In this species the largestfemale in a harem changed sex not only after disappearance ofthe dominant male but also occasionally in his presence. Inisolated harems containing two to three females, strict socialcontrol by the dominant male resulted in females changing sexonly after the male disappeared (takeover sex change). In haremsadjacent to each other, however, takeover sex change did notoccur even when one of the males disappeared. Instead, largeharems including more than four females were formed by fusionof two adjacent harems. In such large harems, the dominant malewas unable to socially prevent the largest female from changingsex later to acquire a portion of the harem (harem-fission sexchange). Females in adjacent harems spawned less frequentlyand tended to grow faster than those in isolated harems, probablyto gain an advantage in dominance status over neighbors of similarsize. Thus, females changed spawning frequencies according tothe two different contexts of sex change. The takeover tacticresults in higher fitness than the harem-fission tactic, whichshould be the best in the bad situation of adjacent harems.  相似文献

Male-biased dimorphism in body size is usually attributed tosexual selection acting on males, through either male competitionor female choice. Brown antechinuses (Antechinus stuartii) aresexually dimorphic in size, and heavier males are known to siremore offspring in the wild. We investigated four possible mechanismsthat might explain this large-male reproductive advantage. Wetested if there is a female preference for large males, a femalepreference for dominant males, if larger males compete moreeffectively for mates, and if there is a survival advantagefor large males during the mating season. We established nestinggroups of males in captivity and conducted mate choice trialsin which males from nesting groups either could or could notinteract. We assessed male dominance rank and recorded survivaltimes after mating. Females did not prefer larger males directly.The results suggest that the other three mechanisms of sexualselection tested account for the large-male advantage: largemales competed more successfully for mates, so were sociallydominant; females rejected subordinates (males they saw losingtwice in contests to previous mates); and dominant males survivedfor longer after their first mating. Females judged male rankbased on direct observation of male competitive interactionsat the time of mating and apparently could not distinguish rankfrom male scent. Effects of size and dominance on male reproductivesuccess are not confounded by age because male antechinusesare semelparous.  相似文献

African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) live in cooperative packswith a clear-cut dominance hierarchy in each sex. Reproductionis largely monopolized by the dominant male and female. Alphafemales produced 76% of all litters in the Selous Game Reserveand 81% in Kruger National Park. Only 6-17% of subordinate femalesgave birth each year, compared to 82% of dominant females. Innonmating periods, subordinate females had higher estrogen levelsand higher estrogen/progestin ratios than alpha females, apparentlypreventing ovulation. During mating periods, subordinate femaleshad lower estrogen levels than dominants, mated less often,and were less aggressive. Subordinate males mated at low rates,wore less aggressive than dominants, and had lower testosteronelevels. Beta males were similar to alpha males behavioraDy andhormonaUy, suggesting that alpha males may share paternity withbeta males. If paternity is more evenly shared than maternity,then subordinate males have a larger incentive than subordinatefemales to remain in the pack. Following this expectation, dispersalin Selous was female biased (49% versus 24% dispersing annually).Perhaps as a result of mortality associated with dispersal,the adult sex ratio was male biased, although the pup sex ratiowas unbiased. In Kruger, neither dispersal nor the adult sex-ratiowas biased. Considerable evidence indicates that female house mice (Mus domesticus) prefer dominant over subordinate males as mates. In addition, male genotype at the t-complex seems to be an important characteristic used by females in mate choice. Specifically, female mice that carry a t-haplotype at the t-complex prefer +/+ over +/t males as mates. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relative contributions of male dominance rank and male t-complex genotype to female mating preference when both factors were systematically varied. We tested females of three genotypes (+/+, +/t, and t/t) in a preference apparatus using pairs of stimulus males varying in relative dominance status and t-complex genotype. In general, when given the choice, females preferred dominant over subordinate males regardless of the male's t-complex genotype. The preference for dominant males was manifested when both stimulus males were of the same t-complex genotype but differed in dominance rank. In addition, when forced to choose between a dominant +/+ and subordinate +/t or between a dominant +/t and subordinate +/+, females continued to prefer the dominant male. Preference for dominant males was independent of female genotype. Only when both males were dominant but differed in t-complex genotype (i.e. one male was +/+ and the other +/t) or when males were unranked (i.e. had not been used in aggressive encounters to determine dominance rank) did females carrying t-haplotypes manifest preferences for +/+ males. Quite unexpectedly, when both males were subordinate but differed in t-complex genotype, preferences of all females shifted in the direction of the +/t male. It is not clear from present data whether the propensity of females to give greater weight to male dominance rank than to t-complex genotype in choosing mates results in greater fitness. However, if these trends are found in natural populations, it would indicate that the role of mating preference in regulating the frequency of t-haplotypes in wild populations is less straightforward than had been previously thought.  相似文献

Elaboration of costly sexual traits can reduce investment inother aspects of reproduction, such as parental care or intrasexualcompetition, which may lead to the evolution of alternativemating tactics. In house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus), lesselaborately ornamented (dull) males tend to dominate more elaborated(redder) males, but redder males pair earlier and invest morein parental care. This suggests that males may pursue alternativeparental or competitive tactics, depending on the elaborationof their sexual trait. Elevation of testosterone, a hormonethat is closely associated with condition in male house finches,influences dominance and sexual behaviors but is antagonisticto parental behaviors. We tested the hypothesis that the higherdominance status of dull males reflects an alternative testosterone-dependentmating tactic. First, we experimentally manipulated the testosteronelevels of captive males and measured the effect on dominancerank, and second, we measured the association of testosteroneelevation and plumage hue in free-living males. We found that,as predicted, testosterone elevation increased dominance rankin captive males. However, in free-living males, testosteronelevels were higher in redder males, suggesting that testosteroneis dissociated from dominance status under natural circumstances.This may be because the context of social interactions and thehigher motivation of dull males to access food resources havea stronger influence on the outcome of dominance interactionsthan does the physiological effects of testosterone elevation.In turn, the strong positive correlation between testosteronelevels and plumage elaboration likely reflects the common conditiondependence of these traits.  相似文献

In male vertebrates, two conflicting paradigms—the energetic costs of high dominance rank and the chronic stress of low rank—have been proposed to explain patterns of immune function and parasitism. To date, neither paradigm has provided a complete explanation for status-related differences in male health. Here, we applied meta-analyses to test for correlations between male social status, immune responses and parasitism. We used an ecoimmunological framework, which proposes that males should re-allocate investment in different immune components depending on the costs of dominance or subordination. Spanning 297 analyses, from 77 studies on several vertebrate taxa, we found that most immune responses were similar between subordinate and dominant males, and neither dominant nor subordinate males consistently invested in predictable immune components. However, subordinate males displayed significantly lower delayed-type hypersensitivity and higher levels of some inflammatory cytokines than dominant males, while dominant males exhibited relatively lower immunoglobulin responses than subordinate males. Despite few differences in immunity, dominant males exhibited consistently higher parasitism than subordinate males, including protozoan blood parasites, ectoparasites and gastrointestinal helminths. We discuss our results in the context of the costs of dominance and subordination and advocate future work that measures both parasitism and immune responses in wild systems.  相似文献

Communication signals are key regulators of social networks and are thought to be under selective pressure to honestly reflect social status, including dominance status. The odours of dominants and nondominants differentially influence behaviour, and identification of the specific pheromones associated with, and predictive of, dominance status is essential for understanding the mechanisms of network formation and maintenance. In mice, major urinary proteins (MUPs) are excreted in extraordinary large quantities and expression level has been hypothesized to provide an honest signal of dominance status. Here, we evaluate whether MUPs are associated with dominance in wild‐derived mice by analysing expression levels before, during and after competition for reproductive resources over 3 days. During competition, dominant males have 24% greater urinary MUP expression than nondominants. The MUP darcin, a pheromone that stimulates female attraction, is predictive of dominance status: dominant males have higher darcin expression before competition. Dominants also have a higher ratio of darcin to other MUPs before and during competition. These differences appear transient, because there are no differences in MUPs or darcin after competition. We also find MUP expression is affected by sire dominance status: socially naive sons of dominant males have lower MUP expression, but this apparent repression is released during competition. A requisite condition for the evolution of communication signals is honesty, and we provide novel insight into pheromones and social networks by showing that MUP and darcin expression is a reliable signal of dominance status, a primary determinant of male fitness in many species.  相似文献

Dominant individuals have access to higher-quality resource; thus, reversing their dominance status would be important for subordinate individuals. Using the convict cichlid fish (Amatitlania nigrofasciata), this study examines whether forming a pair bond can reverse dominance status. Furthermore, I hypothesize that female convict cichlids will incur more dominance reversals from pair-bond formation than males. Dyadic, same-sex contests were conducted to determine dominant and subordinate individuals. Forced pairing of these individuals based on status was followed by polyadic, between-pair contests. The results indicate that individual dominance status does carry over into between-pair competition. Furthermore, dominance reversals do occur in convict cichlids and occur more frequently in females than in males. In addition, dominant males assist their mates during aggressive encounters, and these assists may account for subordinate females winning against dominant females during polyadic contests.  相似文献

Male black grouse (Tetrao tetrix) may receive damage to theirtail ornaments, the lyre, during goshawk predation attemptsand during fights with other males. In this study we confirma previous observation that black grouse males with damagedtail ornaments suffer reduced mating success. In males thatheld territories on the edge of the leks, tail damage was unrelatedto mating success, whereas in central males damage was negativelycorrelated with mating success. We tested experimentally whetherabsence of damage is used by females in mate choice. In maleswith edge territories, intact, control males had higher matingsuccess than males with cut tails, but in males with centralterritories, lyre cutting had no effect on mating success. Theseresults suggest two interpretations. First, female choice alsodepends on factors other than tail damage such as position onthe lek and dominance. Second, the effect of tail damage iscontext dependent; in males that otherwise meet females standards(e.g., dominant males), the effect of tail damage is negligible,but in less dominant males, tail damage could be used by femalesin mate selection. The second interpretation provides an explanationfor why the data on unmanipulated and manipulated birds differ.In experimental central birds, factors other than tail damageprobably determine male mating success, whereas in experimentaledge birds such factors are probably absent and therefore taildamage is relatively more important. In central unmanipulatedbirds, however, males with natural damage are probably not chosenbecause tail damage and absence of other attractive traits arecorrelated. A long-term study of immigrant male spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) living in large multimale/multifemale groups (clans) demonstrated that males acquire social status by queuing. Maximumlikelihood estimates of parameters of a stochastic queuingmodel that assessed queuing discipline confirmed that immigrantmales respected the convention that their positions in a queueof typically 15 or more individuals was determined by theirsequence of arrival. Levels of aggression among males were low;males did not attempt to improve their social status throughphysical contests. Size and body mass did not influence malesocial status. The stability of queues was insured by an increasein the rate at which males formed coalitions against othermales as they rose in social status and by coalitions between high-ranked males and dominant females. High-ranked, long-tenuredmales chiefly consorted with ("shadowed") and focused theiraffiliative behavior on females of high reproductive valueand disrupted attempts by subordinate males to associate withthese females. High-ranked males also supported females againstlower-ranked males that harassed them. In contrast, lower-ranked,short-tenured males focused their affiliative behavior on young adult females and rarely shadowed or defended females. Malesthat did not disperse from their natal clan (nondispersers)quickly acquired top rank in the male social hierarchy. We investigated relationships between fecal androgen concentrations, facial coloration and behaviour in semi-free-ranging male mandrills. We found that fecal androgen levels were significantly positively related to dominance rank, independent of rank stability and the mating period, suggesting that male mandrills live in a permanently aggressive context in which they must actively maintain their dominance status. Facial red coloration was also significantly related to both fecal androgen levels and rank, with high ranking males having both higher androgen levels and redder faces, although dominant males did not always have the highest androgen levels or the reddest faces. Predictive relationships between androgen levels, coloration and rank were short-term. Androgen concentrations and facial redness both increased in the presence of receptive females, as did the former during periods of rank instability. We conclude that male facial redness is likely to represent an honest signal (to other males) of current androgen status, competitive ability and willingness to engage in fights and that females may also use this to assess male condition. Further, our findings provide support for the “challenge hypothesis” as originally proposed for birds by Wingfield.  相似文献

Maternal effects play an important role in mediating reproductive success; the different allocation of resources in eggs is considered a primary maternal effect. In oviparous vertebrates, there are several substances (hormones, immunoglobulins, antioxidants, antibacterial molecules) that females may allocate differentially. Mate choice is a key factor influencing female reproductive decisions and investment in eggs, but it is not clear to what extent the dominance status of the partner can influence the decision to invest differentially in the quality of eggs. In the grey partridge Perdix perdix, we ranked males for their social status after pairwise dominance tests. Then, females were paired experimentally with dominant or subordinate individuals. We measured testosterone, lysozyme and ovotransferrin concentrations in their eggs. Females paired with dominant males laid eggs with higher testosterone concentration, while egg mass, lysozyme and ovotransferrin concentrations did not differ. With regard to testosterone, because this hormone has been shown to elicit beneficial effects in offspring hatching from grey partridge eggs, our results are in line with the differential allocation hypothesis that females paired with high‐quality males should invest more in the current reproductive event.  相似文献

The argument that an optimal age at first reproduction evolveswhere the benefits of reproduction outweigh the costs impliesthat where conditions change, age at first reproduction shouldalso change. We studied six captive populations of fallow deer(Dama dama) that differed in the age structure of males, maledensity, and sex ratio. We examined responses of males to changesin competition by simulating the presence of additional malesby providing visual, olfactory, and auditory stimuli. Our resultssuggest that dominance rank was the most important factor indetermining the level of reproductive behaviors exhibited. Theparticipation in reproduction increased with dominance status,and this association held for males that are usually sociallyimmature (3-5 years old). Hence, age apart from dominance wasrelatively unimportant in affecting the reproductive behavior.Male density was positively correlated with the time spent walkingand standing The female-to-male ratio was positively relatedto male-female interactions, but negatively related to male-maleinteractions. In response to the simulations, males older than3 years increased the rate of reproductive behaviors, but youngermales did not change or decreased the rate. We conclude thatonly males up to 3 years of age refrained from reproductionunder competition by mature males. However, past 3 years ofage, investment in reproduction is a function of dominance ratherthan a function bf age. This implies that 4- and 5-year-oldmales do not seems to defer reproduction until socially maturebut that their participation is a correlate of the achievabledominance rank.  相似文献

In most cooperative breeders, dominants suppress the reproductionof subordinates. However, two previous studies of Neolamprologuspulcher, a cooperatively breeding cichlid fish, have suggestedthat socially subordinate helper males sneak fertilizationsfrom dominant breeding males. If such sneaking does occur, boththeoretical work and empirical studies of other fish speciessuggest that sperm competition will select for increased reproductiveinvestment by sneaker males, relative to more dominant males.To address these issues, we quantified gonadal investment andsperm characteristics of 41 N. pulcher male breeders and 62male helpers from 55 groups in Lake Tanganyika. Gonadal investmentfollowed patterns consistent with reproductive suppression,with breeders having considerably larger testes masses thanhelpers. Breeders also had faster and longer swimming spermand a higher percentage of motile sperm compared to helpers.However, sperm characteristics of large helpers were similarto those of breeders, but these same helpers had lower testesmasses. Thus, large helpers had sperm that were physiologicallyequivalent to that of breeders, but their relatively small gonadsimply that they were reproductively suppressed.  相似文献

We examined variation in glucocorticoid levels in the mandrill, a brightly coloured primate species, to identify major social influences on stress hormones, and investigate relationships among glucocorticoid levels, testosterone and secondary sexual ornamentation. We collected a total of 317 fecal samples for 16 adult male mandrills over 13 months, including mating and non-mating periods and periods of both dominance rank stability and instability, and compared fecal glucocorticoid levels with dominance rank, rank stability, presence of receptive females, gastro-intestinal parasite infection, fecal testosterone and facial red coloration. Glucocorticoid levels did not vary systematically with dominance rank, but increased when the dominance hierarchy was unstable, and increased in the presence of receptive females. The relationship between dominance rank and glucocorticoid levels changed direction according to the stability of the dominance hierarchy: glucocorticoid levels were higher in subordinate males under stable conditions, but under conditions of instability higher ranking males had higher glucocorticoid levels. The influence of dominance rank also interacted with the presence of receptive females: glucocorticoids were higher in dominant males than in subordinates, but only during mating periods, suggesting that dominant males are more stressed than subordinates during such periods. These findings support previous studies showing that the relationship between glucocorticoids and dominance rank in male baboons is dependent on the social environment. We also found that males with higher glucocorticoids suffered a higher diversity of gastrointestinal parasite infection, in line with evidence that glucocorticoids suppress the immune system in other species. However, we found no support for the stress-mediated immunocompetence handicap hypothesis for the evolution of condition-dependent ornaments: glucocorticoid and testosterone levels were positively related, rather than the negative relationship predicted by the hypothesis, and we found no relationship between red colour and glucocorticoid levels, suggesting that glucocorticoids do not play a role in translating social conditions or physical health into ornament expression in this species.  相似文献
