The antimicrobial resistance of 1,018 isolates of Enterobacteriaceae isolated from fecal specimens of the urban population of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was studied. Resistance to 1 or more of 10 antimicrobial agents was encountered in 50.2% of the isolates. Of the isolates tested,Escherichia coli (0.8%) andKlebsiella species (1.6%) were found resistant to seven antimicrobial agents simultaneously: ampicillin, chloramphenicol, kanamycin, colistin, streptomycin, tetracycline, and carbenicillin. Resistance to nalidixic acid was encountered in only 0.68% of theE. coli isolates. No isolate was found to be resistant to gentamicin. Eighty-six of the resistant strains were tested for their ability to transfer their resistance. Forty percent were able to do so withE. coli K-12.  相似文献

Serratia marcescens strains from three hospitals in the city of New York were tested for antibiotic susceptibility patterns and the presence of transmissible antibiotic resistance factors. There appears to be a pattern characteristic for each hospital with regard to the sensitivity to nalidixic acid, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, and sulfonamides, whereas the resistance to ampicillin, cephalothin, and streptomycin is similar in the strains isolated from all three hospitals. In one hospital, a single type of R factor was found which transfers resistance to streptomycin, kanamycin, ampicillin, and sulfonamides, whereas strains isolated from a second hospital transfer only ampicillin resistance. No R factors could be detected in multiply resistant Serratia strains isolated in a third hospital. The presence of a single type of R factor probably reflects the relative ecological isolation of S. marcescens and could be useful for epidemiological studies of hospital infections with Serratia.  相似文献

A comparative study was done on the transfer frequency of R factors from 90 strains of multiple drug-resistant Aerobacter and 81 strains of Klebsiella to Escherichia coli CSH-2 (F(-), met(-), pro(-), Nal-r). The most common resistance patterns for the Aerobacter isolants were ampicillin streptomycin chloramphenicol tetracycline and ampicillin streptomycin chloramphenicol tetracycline kanamycin neomycin; for the Klebsiella isolants, the most common resistance pattern was ampicillin kanamycin streptomycin tetracycline chloramphenicol neomycin. R factors were isolated from 14.1% of the Aerobacter strains; 61.5% of these R factors harbored R determinants for ampicillin streptomycin tetracycline. R factors were isolated from 79.1% of the Klebsiella strains; four R factors were isolated with significant frequency; streptomycin chloramphenicol kanamycin neomycin, 37.5%; ampicillin streptomycin tetracycline kanamycin neomycin, 14.1%; ampicillin streptomycin tetracycline, 12.5%; and streptomycin chloramphenicol tetracycline, 12.5%.Chloramphenicol, kanamycin, and neomycin resistance was rarely transferred from the Aerobacter strains, although over 50% of the clinical isolants possessed resistance to these antibiotics. In contrast, over 75% of the Klebsiella strains transferred resistance to chloramphenicol, kanamycin, neomycin. Highest frequency of transferred resistance to individual drugs in the Aerobacter strains was to streptomycin (14.8%), whereas in the Klebsiella group resistance to four drugs was transferred at a very high frequency: streptomycin (80.8%), chloramphenicol (78.5%), kanamycin (76.4%), and neomycin (75.9%).  相似文献

In the study on antibiotic resistance 1383 strains of El Tor Vibrio cholerae isolated from surface water reservoirs in 12 administrative territories of the Siberia and Far East within a period of 15 years were tested. The following antibiotics were used: ampicillin, streptomycin, monomycin, polymyxin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, rifampicin and nalidixic acid. The resistance was unstable and its pattern was wave-like according to annual changes in the biological cycle. It was especially evident in regard to ampicillin, streptomycin, monomycin and polymyxin. The highest numbers of the strains were resistant to polymyxin, ampicillin and streptomycin (up to 100 per cent in some years). The lowest numbers of the strains were resistant to chloramphenicol (0.4 per cent) and tetracycline (1.9 per cent). No strains resistant to rifampicin and nalidixic acid were isolated. In some cases the antibiotic resistance level depended on the geographical zone where the strain was isolated. A direct quantitative dependence of the resistance level on the MIC was observed: the lower the MIC of the drug was, the lower the number of the strains resistant to it was. Within the 15-year period there was no general tendency to increase the resistance in V. cholerae to the antibiotics used.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to compare some of the properties of 28 lactose-positive and 28 lactose-negative Salmonella agona strains isolated from faeces of infants hospitalized in the same hospital. Some of biochemical properties, sensitivity to 14 antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents and sensitivity to bacteriophages used for typing of this Salmonella genus were tested. Results of biochemical examinations revealed that lactose-fermenting strains retain the remaining of Salmonella of subspecies I. Two biochemical features are of particular importance: the ability to ferment lactose on all lactose containing media and a lack of the ability to produce H2S on Kligler medium. These two features differentiate lactose-fermenting strains of Salmonella from non-lactose fermenting ones. Antibiotic sensitivity pattern differed between lactose-positive and lactose-negative strains. Lactose-positive strains showed higher degree of resistance than lactose-negative strains. The differences in resistance were seen in the case of chloramphenicol, doxycycline, gentamicin and tetracycline. Both lactose-positive and lactose-negative strains were sensitive to colistin, neomycin, nitrofurantoin and nalidixic acid. They were resistant to ampicillin, cloxacillin, rifampicin, streptomycin, sulfatiazol and biseptol. Bacteriophage typing revealed that all lactose-negative strains isolated in this study from clinical samples belonged to the same phage pattern V. Lactose-positive strains belonged to two phage types VB and XI. Type VB prevailed.  相似文献

Raw and treated sewage samples were examined for antibiotic-resistant, lactose-fermenting bacteria. Approximately 1% of the total lactose-fermenting bacteria were multiply resistant. Of these organisms, 50% were capable of transferring all or part of their resistance to a drug-sensitive recipient. Only 43% of those isolated on media containing a single antibiotic were capable of resistance transfer, whereas 57% of those recovered on multiple antibiotic plates transferred resistance. R factors conferring resistance to chloramphenicol, streptomycin, and tetracycline; streptomycin and tetracycline; and ampicillin, streptomycin, and tetracycline accounted for 22, 19, and 15%, respectively, of those identified. The data indicate a significant level of infectious drug resistance among the intestinal bacteria of the urban population.  相似文献

Shigella were most sensitive to polymyxin ceporin, ampicillin, neomycin and furazolidone and resistant to chloramphenicol, tetracycline and streptomycin. Shigella resistant simultaneously to two or three drugs mainly to tetracycline + chloramphenicol, tetracycline + streptomycin and tetracycline + chloramphenicol + streptomycin were most frequent. The frequency of the Shigella strains carrying R-plasmids increased from 28 per cent in 1969--1970 to 72.6 per cent in 1977. The Shigella strains isolated during the dysentery outbreak in 1973--1977 carried the R-factor controlling resistance to tetracycline + chloramphenicol, tetracycline + chloramphenicol + streptomycin, tetracycline + chloramphenicol + streptomycin + neomycin. Interaction between separate biochemical types, colicinogenicity and drug resistance classes was found in the Shigella isolates. The data on the effect of antibiotic (tetracyclines) intensive use in stock-raising defining wide spread of the R-plasmids controlling resistance to these drugs were obtained.  相似文献

Watanabe, Tsutomu (Keio University, Tokyo, Japan), and Chizuko Ogata. Episome-mediated transfer of drug resistance in Enterobacteriaceae. IX. Recombination of an R factor with F. J. Bacteriol. 91:43-50. 1966.-R factors can be transduced in Salmonella typhimurium with phage P-22, and a majority of the drug-resistant transductants are unable to transfer their drug resistance by cell-to-cell contact, as we have previously reported. Several exceptional types of transductants of S. typhimurium, with the markers of resistance to sulfonamide, streptomycin, and chloramphenicol, were recently obtained by transduction with phage P-22 of a four-drug-resistance R factor carrying the markers of resistance to sulfonamide, streptomycin, chloramphenicol, and tetracycline. They were exceptional in that they had low conjugal transferability of their drug resistance. When one of these exceptional transductants (38R) was transferred to an F(+) strain of Escherichia coli K-12, 38R acquired high transferability in its further transfer. This high transferability was found to be due to the recombination of 38R with F. Transductant 38R was of the fi(+) (fi = fertility inhibition) type, and did not show superinfection immunity against fi(+) and fi(-) R factors. The recombinant 38R.F was genetically very stable and resistant to elimination with acridines. It did not show superinfection immunity against fi(+) and fi(-) R factors, but did show superinfection immunity against F. Further, 38R.F did not restrict a female-specific phage (W-31), unlike wild-type F. F(-) and R(-) segregants were isolated from this recombinant 38R.F, and these segregants exhibited genetic characteristics different from the original R, its transductant 38R, and wild-type F.  相似文献

A total of 635 clinically diagnosed typhoid fever patients were bled from three different health institutions in the metropolis of Lagos, Nigeria over a period of 15 months, May 1997 to July 1998. Out of the total blood cultured, 101 (15.9%) isolates of Salmonella species were isolated of which 68 (67.3%) were S. typhi, 17 (16.8%) and 16 (15.8%) were S. paratyphi A. and S. arizonae respectively. The overall isolation rate of S. typhi among patients is 10.7%, with most isolates 45.9% found among the severely-ill young adults, age group 16-30 years. All isolates were subjected to anti-microbial susceptibility testing using 12 different antibiotics: chloramphenicol, ampicillin, cotrimoxazole, gentamicin, colistin sulfate, nalidixic acid, nitrofurantoin, cefotaxime, tetracycline, streptomycin, ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin. All the S. typhi and S. paratyphi A isolates showed resistance to two or more of the 10 of 12 antibiotics tested particularly the 3-first-line antibiotics commonly used (chloramphenicol, ampicillin and cotrimoxazole) in the treatment of typhoid fever in Nigeria. No isolate showed resistance to ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin, however, nalidixic acid and gentamicin showed a moderate and appreciable inhibition to most of our isolates.  相似文献

Escherichia coli strains isolated from 151 swine and 108 fowl, which were kept at the Animal Health Center, Maebashi, Japan, were surveyed for drug resistance and distribution of R factors. All of the swine and 38% of the fowl excreted E. coli strains resistant to tetracycline, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, and sulfanilamide, or certain combinations thereof. Among 278 resistant cultures isolated from swine, 13% were found to be resistant to one antibiotic, whereas 87% were resistant to more than one antibiotic. Among these resistant strains, 40% carried R factors which were transferable by the usual conjugal process. The resistance patterns of these R factors included 36% which were singly resistant and 64% which were multiply resistant. Among 54 resistant cultures isolated from fowl, 24% were singly resistant and 76% were multiply resistant. Of the resistant strains from fowl, 22% carried R factors. The resistance patterns of R factors included 50% of the singly resistant type and 50% which were multiply resistant. In spite of feeding with dairy products containing only tetracycline, a high incidence of multiple resistance was observed in the E. coli strains and the R factors isolated from these animals.  相似文献

Sensitivity of 92 strains of the causative agent of pseudotuberculosis isolated in the Ukraine was studied with respect to 26 antibacterial drugs. It was found that the strains of the pseudotuberculous bacteria were sensitive to 17 drugs, i.e. benzylpenicillin, ampicillin, carbenicillin, cephaloridin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, streptomycin, neomycin, monomycin, kanamycin, gentamicin, polymyxin, colistin, furadontin, nalidixic acid, sulfisoxazol and septrin. No differences in the sensitivity of the strains isolated in various districts of the Ukraine and from various sources were found. By their antibiotic sensitivity the strains isolated in the Ukraine did not differ from the cultures isolated in other districts of the USSR and abroad.  相似文献

Several drug resistance patterns were determined in 170 pathogenic strains of E. coli isolated in 6 Polish towns from infant diarrhoea. The most frequent were strains resistant to 5 different drugs: ampicillin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, streptomycin and sulfonamide. Conjugative R factors of 30 strains of the same resistance pattern (Ap Tc Cm Sm Su) were characterised by determining their Fi(F) character, incompatibility and molecular weight.  相似文献

A total of 510 Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica strains representing 56 serotypes, isolated from human stool specimens during 1998-2000 in sanitary-epidemiological units in Poland were tested for their susceptibility by a standard disk diffusion method for: ampicillin, cefotaxime, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, streptomycin, gentamicin, kanamycin, nalidixic acid, ciprofloxacin, furazolidone, cotrimoxazole, sulfonamides and trimethoprim. For 201 of the investigated strains, belonging to 5 most common isolated serotypes (S. Enteritidis, S. Typhimurium, S. Hadar, S. Infantis and S. Virchow) the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for the aforementioned antibiotics, as well as for amoxicillin with clavulanian were determined. Selected strains were screened for production extended spectrum b-lactamases (ESBLs). It was observed that 42.9% of Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica strains were resistant to 2 or more antibiotics, with the highest prevalence of MDR strains among serotypes Typhimurium, Hadar and Virchow. Resistance to ampicillin, streptomycin, tetracycline, nalidixic acid, furazolidone and sulphonamides was observed most frequently. Over 93% of S. Virchow strains were resistant to furazolidone. No strains resistant to ciprofloxacin were detected according to the NCCLS guidelines, but 31.3% of isolates exhibiting reduced ciprofloxacin susceptibility (MICs ranging between 0.125 and 0.5 mg/l). Two strains S. Mbandaka and Salmonella group D (variant motility--) were resistant to cefotaxime and probably produced ESBL.  相似文献

Nature, structure, occurrence and drug resistance of 160 strains of Y. pseudotuberculosis and 60 strains of Y. enterocolitica isolated from various sources within 1986-1988 were studied. In the strains of Y. pseudotuberculosis, the cell composition with respect to the requirements in calcium ions as well as the plasmid profiles with determination of the molecular weights of the plasmids in the antibiotic sensitive and resistant pathogens and R(+)-transconjugants were investigated. Some molecular genetic properties of the Yersinia R plasmids were also investigated. Antibiotic polyresistant strains of Y. enterocolitica were the most frequent donors of the R plasmids while the strains of Y. pseudotuberculosis were less frequently the donors, in the resistance pattern of which there were more frequent streptomycin and tetracycline resistance determinants. The conjugative R plasmids of Y. pseudotuberculosis were characterized by strict control of replication, repressed frequency of transfers, and a molecular weight of about 47 MD. Their replicones as a rule contained streptomycin and tetracycline markers determining resistance to streptomycin and tetracycline at the levels of 1250 and 156 micrograms/ml, respectively.  相似文献

Unowsky, Joel (Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, Ill.), and Martin Rachmeler. Mechanisms of antibiotic resistance determined by resistance-transfer factors. J. Bacteriol. 92:358-365. 1966.-This study was concerned with the mechanism of expression of drug resistance carried by resistance-transfer (R) factors of two types: fi(-) (negative fertility inhibition) and fi(+) (positive fertility inhibition). The levels of drug resistance determined by R factors used in this study were similar to those reported by other investigators. A new finding was that Escherichia coli carrying the fi(-) episome was resistant to 150 to 200 mug/ml of streptomycin. The growth kinetics of R factor-containing cells were similar in the presence or absence of streptomycin, chloramphenicol, and tetracycline, but a period of adaptation was necessary before cells began exponential growth in the presence of tetracycline. By use of radioactive antibiotics, it was shown that cells containing the fi(-) episome were impermeable to tetracycline and streptomycin, whereas cells containing the fi(+) episome were impermeable only to chloramphenicol. Cell-free extracts from fi(+) and fi(-) cells were sensitive to the antibiotics tested in the polyuridylic acid-stimulated incorporation of phenylalanine into protein.  相似文献

Shigella strains isolated in Japan between 1971 and 1979 were surveyed for drug resistance and distribution of R plasmids. Of 2,510 strains, 89.3% were resistant to either one or various combinations of four drugs, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, streptomycin, and sulfanilamide. About 66% of the Shigella isolates were quadruply resistant. The frequency of isolation of R plasmids from quadruply resistant Shigella strains was the highest when compared with other strains resistant to various combinations of the four drugs. The conjugal transferability of 204 quadruply resistant strains isolated between 1977 and 1979 was tested by various mixed-culture methods. Among the total strains examined, 70.6% carried transferable resistance when tested by the conventional broth culture method, 90.2% transferred their resistance when, in addition the replica-plating method was used and 97.5% could transfer their resistance when the membrane filter method was also used. Although the remaining five strains could not transfer their resistance by any of the mixed culture methods, the drug resistance of four of the five strains was mobilized by the concomitant presence of F-tet or T-kan plasmid. These results indicate that almost all of the quadruple resistance in Shigella isolates was mediated by plasmid.  相似文献

Pathogenic strains of Vibrio cholerae O139 possess the cholera toxin A subunit (ctxA) gene as well as the gene for toxin co-regulated pili (tcpA). We report the isolation of a ctxA-negative, tcpA-negative V. cholerae O139 strain (INDREI) from a patient in Mexico diagnosed with gastrointestinal illness. Certain phenotypic characteristics of this strain were identical to those of V. cholerae O1 biotype El Tor. Unlike ctxA-positive V. cholerae O139 strains, this strain was sensitive to a wide panel of antibiotics, including ampicillin, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, furazolidone, nalidixic acid, nitrofurantoin, tetracycline, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and streptomycin, but was resistant to polymyxin B. Ribotype and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis profiles of INDRE1 differed from those of ctxA-positive V. cholerae O139 and other V. cholerae strains. Phenotypic characteristics of the Mexico strain were similar to those reported for V. cholerae O139 isolates from Argentina and Sri Lanka.  相似文献

Helaeomyia petrolei (oil fly) larvae inhabit the asphalt seeps of Rancho La Brea in Los Angeles, Calif. The culturable microbial gut contents of larvae collected from the viscous oil were recently examined, and the majority (9 of 14) of the strains were identified as Providencia spp. Subsequently, 12 of the bacterial strains isolated were tested for their resistance or sensitivity to 23 commonly used antibiotics. All nine strains classified as Providencia rettgeri exhibited dramatic resistance to tetracycline, vancomycin, bacitracin, erythromycin, novobiocin, polymyxin, colistin, and nitrofurantoin. Eight of nine Providencia strains showed resistance to spectinomycin, six of nine showed resistance to chloramphenicol, and five of nine showed resistance to neomycin. All 12 isolates were sensitive to nalidixic acid, streptomycin, norfloxacin, aztreonam, cipericillin, pipericillin, and cefotaxime, and all but OF008 (Morganella morganii) were sensitive to ampicillin and cefoxitin. The oil fly bacteria were not resistant to multiple antibiotics due to an elevated mutation rate. For each bacterium, the number of resistant mutants per 10(8) cells was determined separately on rifampin, nalidixic acid, and spectinomycin. In each case, the average frequencies of resistant colonies were at least 50-fold lower than those established for known mutator strain ECOR 48. In addition, the oil fly bacteria do not appear to excrete antimicrobial agents. When tested, none of the oil fly bacteria produced detectable zones of inhibition on Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, or Candida albicans cultures. Furthermore, the resistance properties of oil fly bacteria extended to organic solvents as well as antibiotics. When pre-exposed to 20 microg of tetracycline per ml, seven of nine oil fly bacteria tolerated overlays of 100% cyclohexane, six of nine tolerated 10% xylene, benzene, or toluene (10:90 in cyclohexane), and three of nine (OF007, OF010, and OF011) tolerated overlays of 50% xylene-50% cyclohexane. The observed correlation between antibiotic resistance and organic solvent tolerance is likely explained by an active efflux pump that is maintained in oil fly bacteria by the constant selective pressure of La Brea's solvent-rich environment. We suggest that the oil fly bacteria and their genes for solvent tolerance may provide a microbial reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes.  相似文献

Studies on the induction of histidase were made with normal and nitrofurantoin resistant strains of Vibrio el tor. Nitrofurantoin resistant strains showed decreased level of induction in comparison to normal Vibrio el tor. The effect of different inhibitors like actinomycin D, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, nitrofurantoin and rifampicin on histidase induction was also studied. The mechanism of inhibition caused by the antibiotics is discussed.  相似文献

A repeated cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the patterns of antimicrobial resistance in 1,286 Escherichia coli strains isolated from human septage, wildlife, domestic animals, farm environments, and surface water in the Red Cedar watershed in Michigan. Isolation and identification of E. coli were done by using enrichment media, selective media, and biochemical tests. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing by the disk diffusion method was conducted for neomycin, gentamicin, streptomycin, chloramphenicol, ofloxacin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, ampicillin, nalidixic acid, nitrofurantoin, cephalothin, and sulfisoxazole. Resistance to at least one antimicrobial agent was demonstrated in isolates from livestock, companion animals, human septage, wildlife, and surface water. In general, E. coli isolates from domestic species showed resistance to the largest number of antimicrobial agents compared to isolates from human septage, wildlife, and surface water. The agents to which resistance was demonstrated most frequently were tetracycline, cephalothin, sulfisoxazole, and streptomycin. There were similarities in the patterns of resistance in fecal samples and farm environment samples by animal, and the levels of cephalothin-resistant isolates were higher in farm environment samples than in fecal samples. Multidrug resistance was seen in a variety of sources, and the highest levels of multidrug-resistant E. coli were observed for swine fecal samples. The fact that water sample isolates were resistant only to cephalothin may suggest that the resistance patterns for farm environment samples may be more representative of the risk of contamination of surface waters with antimicrobial agent-resistant bacteria.  相似文献
