Two directly opposed explanations for the distribution of female infanticide across cultures have recently appeared. Divale and Harris propose to explain this practice as part of a system which reduces population growth. Dickemann says that the practice serves to increase reproductive success. I criticize each of these explanations and propose a third which depends on the technoecological and economic constraints given precedence by Harris and Divale, combined with the insights of sexual selection which are central to Dickemann's account.  相似文献

It is shown that in some experimental designs the MANOVA- and the GMANOVA-model are too restrictive either to yield all hypothesis tests of interest or to reflect all known features of the design. An extension of these models is derived by relating the response vectors with the unknown model parameters by linear equations which may be completely different for each of the p components of the response vector and for each of the n independent vectors. For situations, in which a Wishart-distributed estimator for the underlying common covariance matrix is attainable, a test for any s-dimensional linear hypothesis on the model parameters is derived.  相似文献

Community diversity has been studied extensively in relation to its effects on ecosystem functioning. Testing the consequences of diversity on ecosystem processes will require measures to be available based on a rigorous conceptualization of their very meaning. In the last decades, literally dozens of measures of diversity have been proposed. However, rather than using unrelated metrics, we need to identify their separate components so that possible links between them and ecosystem functioning can be examined using an agreed-upon language. In this paper, first, a short overview on new and old measures of community diversity is presented. Next, I propose a general framework in which most of the existing measures of diversity are sorted into four interrelated semantic classes: richness, abundance-weighted diversity, evenness and divergence. In this view, this paper constitutes an attempt to organize the very large number of existing diversity measures avoiding ambiguities in the meaning of the different facets of community diversity.  相似文献

MaxEnt is a program for modelling species distributions from presence‐only species records. This paper is written for ecologists and describes the MaxEnt model from a statistical perspective, making explicit links between the structure of the model, decisions required in producing a modelled distribution, and knowledge about the species and the data that might affect those decisions. To begin we discuss the characteristics of presence‐only data, highlighting implications for modelling distributions. We particularly focus on the problems of sample bias and lack of information on species prevalence. The keystone of the paper is a new statistical explanation of MaxEnt which shows that the model minimizes the relative entropy between two probability densities (one estimated from the presence data and one, from the landscape) defined in covariate space. For many users, this viewpoint is likely to be a more accessible way to understand the model than previous ones that rely on machine learning concepts. We then step through a detailed explanation of MaxEnt describing key components (e.g. covariates and features, and definition of the landscape extent), the mechanics of model fitting (e.g. feature selection, constraints and regularization) and outputs. Using case studies for a Banksia species native to south‐west Australia and a riverine fish, we fit models and interpret them, exploring why certain choices affect the result and what this means. The fish example illustrates use of the model with vector data for linear river segments rather than raster (gridded) data. Appropriate treatments for survey bias, unprojected data, locally restricted species, and predicting to environments outside the range of the training data are demonstrated, and new capabilities discussed. Online appendices include additional details of the model and the mathematical links between previous explanations and this one, example code and data, and further information on the case studies.  相似文献

Existing methods for calculating semantic similarities between pairs of Gene Ontology (GO) terms and gene products often rely on external databases like Gene Ontology Annotation (GOA) that annotate gene products using the GO terms. This dependency leads to some limitations in real applications. Here, we present a semantic similarity algorithm (SSA), that relies exclusively on the GO. When calculating the semantic similarity between a pair of input GO terms, SSA takes into account the shortest path between them, the depth of their nearest common ancestor, and a novel similarity score calculated between the definitions of the involved GO terms. In our work, we use SSA to calculate semantic similarities between pairs of proteins by combining pairwise semantic similarities between the GO terms that annotate the involved proteins. The reliability of SSA was evaluated by comparing the resulting semantic similarities between proteins with the functional similarities between proteins derived from expert annotations or sequence similarity. Comparisons with existing state-of-the-art methods showed that SSA is highly competitive with the other methods. SSA provides a reliable measure for semantics similarity independent of external databases of functional-annotation observations.  相似文献

We present a simple framework that highlights the most fundamental requirement for the evolution of altruism: assortment between individuals carrying the cooperative genotype and the helping behaviours of others with which these individuals interact. We partition the fitness effects on individuals into those due to self and those due to the 'interaction environment', and show that it is the latter that is most fundamental to understanding the evolution of altruism. We illustrate that while kinship or genetic similarity among those interacting may generate a favourable structure of interaction environments, it is not a fundamental requirement for the evolution of altruism, and even suicidal aid can theoretically evolve without help ever being exchanged among genetically similar individuals. Using our simple framework, we also clarify a common confusion made in the literature between alternative fitness accounting methods (which may equally apply to the same biological circumstances) and unique causal mechanisms for creating the assortment necessary for altruism to be favoured by natural selection.  相似文献

Arachidonic acid increased the outputs of prostaglandin (PG) F-2 alpha, PGE-2 and 6-keto-PGF-1 alpha from the Day-7 and Day-15 guinea-pig uterus superfused in vitro. Similar increases in PG output were observed when the arachidonic acid treatment was repeated after an interval of 1, 3 or 5 h. Phospholipase (PL) A-2 increased the outputs of PGF-2 alpha, PGE-2 and 6-keto-PGF-1 alpha from the Day-7 guinea-pig uterus, but repeating the PLA-2 treatment 1 h later failed to stimulate PG output. The increase in outputs of PGF-2 alpha and PGE-2 caused by PLA-2 were partly restored after 3 h and were fully restored after 5 h, whereas the increase in 6-keto-PGF-1 alpha output produced by PLA-2 was only partly restored after 3 and 5 h. PLA-2 had little or no effect on PGF-2 alpha and PGE-2 outputs from the Day-15 guinea-pig uterus initially, and when repeated after 1, 3 and 5 h. This was probably due to the output of these two PGs, particularly of PGF-2 alpha, being stimulated in vivo before removal of the uterus. PLA-2 increased 6-keto-PGF-1 alpha output from the Day-15 uterus initially, but failed to cause a response when administered again 1 h later. After 3 and 5 h, the increase in 6-keto-PGF-1 alpha output from the Day-15 uterus caused by PLA-2 was partly restored. A23187 and PLC increased the outputs of PGF-2 alpha, PGE-2 and 6-keto-PGF-1 alpha from the Day-7 and Day-15 guinea-pig uterus. These responses to A23187 and PLC were reduced (but not abolished) when the two compounds were administered again 1 h later. After 3 and 5 h, the increases in output of PGF-2 alpha and PGE-2 produced by A23187 and PLC had returned to the initial values. The increases in output of 6-keto-PGF-1 alpha from the Day-7 and Day-15 guinea-pig uterus produced by A23187 and PLC were partly restored after 3 and 5 h, except for the response to PLC on Day 7 which was fully restored after 5 h. The results show that there is no failure with time in the mechanism which converts arachidonic acid into PGF-2 alpha in the guinea-pig uterus.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

We consider a simple model to give a plausible mechanical explanation of what are the actual resting heart rates of mammals optimized for. We study what is the optimal frequency for a viscoelastic fluid circulating in a pulsatile way through a network of tubes and conclude that the heart rate is not optimized to transport blood through the whole net. Rather, actual resting heart rates of mammals happen at frequencies that optimize flow in vessels of radii that correspond to large arteries, which bring oxygenated blood rapidly far away from the heart, towards head and limbs. Our results for the optimal frequencies, obtained using observed radii of femoral arteries in mammals, agree best with the heart rates observed. We find a theoretical allometric relation between optimal flow frequency and radius: νR−1. This one, agrees with the exponent obtained when plotting observed heart rates versus radii of both, femoral arteries and carotids in mammals of different sizes, from mice to horses.  相似文献

A new transmission/disequilibrium-test statistic is proposed for situations in which transmission is uncertain. Such situations arise when transmission of a multilocus marker haplotype is considered, since haplotype phase is often unknown in a substantial number of instances. Even for single-locus markers, transmission is uncertain if one or both parents are missing. In both these situations, uncertainty may be reduced by the typing of further siblings, whose disease status may be unaffected or unknown. The proposed test is a score test based on a partial score function that omits the terms most influenced by hidden population stratification.  相似文献

Summary We consider a discrete model for asynchronous circuits and show that, under very mild restrictions, this model excludes the existence of glitch-free arbiters. When [3H]cholesteryl ester-labeled low density (LDL) and intermediate density lipoproteins (IDL) from a normotriglyceridemic, hypercholesterolemic rabbit were injected into severely hypertriglyceridemic, hypercholesterolemic rabbits, 60% of the label appeared in very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) at 3 hr. A similar experiment showed that 40% of injected 131I-protein-labeled LDL appeared in the IDL fraction at 4 hr. Taken together, these data suggest that the exchange of LDL cholesteryl ester for VLDL triglyceride results in a density shift of injected LDL to the IDL density range. Furthermore, the percent of injected 131I-labeled LDL from normotriglyceridemic rabbits that appeared in the IDL fraction increased in rabbits with increasing levels of plasma triglyceride. This LDL density shift was reproduced in vitro by incubating iodinated LDL from normotriglyceridemic, hypercholesterolemic rabbits with concentrations of VLDL from hypertriglyceridemic, hypercholesterolemic rabbits similar to those in plasma. With such a system, it was shown that the percentage of LDL that appeared in the IDL fraction increased with time, was enhanced fourfold by the addition of plasma lipid transfer protein, increased with increasing molar ratio of triglyceride to cholesteryl ester in VLDL, but apparently did not increase with increasing VLDL particle number. These studies suggest that a pronounced decrease in density of lipoproteins that would normally appear in the LDL density range, resulting from loss of cholesteryl ester in exchange for VLDL triglyceride, may explain, at least in part, the reduced LDL levels in severe hypertriglyceridemia.  相似文献

The relation between plant yield and plant nutrient concentration is sometimes found to be negative, a phenomenon called the Piper-Steenbjerg (PS) effect. A model was used to examine the underlying causes of the PS effect, and the conditions under which it is most likely to occur. The model uses the nutrient productivity concept for plant growth and a nutrient uptake equation in which root growth rate and external nutrient concentration determine the uptake rate. The study suggests that the PS effect occurs when the fast growth of plants grown in an initially higher nutrient medium eventually leads to a more rapid depletion of external nutrients than the slow growth of plants grown in an initially lower nutrient medium. The fast growth of plants combined with a rapid decrease of nutrient uptake leads to a fall in plant nutrient concentration. When these large plants with very low nutrient concentrations are compared with the smaller, slow-growing plants, a PS effect may be found depending on the time at which the plants are harvested, and on the range of initial values of the external nutrient content. When it occurs, the effect is greatest when the depletion volume per unit new root (Vd) is lowest, and when the mobility of nutrients in the medium is highest (α=1). The results are sufficiently general to apply to a variety of nutrients, plant species and growth media.  相似文献
