Young chickens inoculated with multiple low doses of mixed oocysts of Eimeria acervulina, E. brunetti, and E. maxima had a high level of resistance to reinfection with a mixed challenge dose on Day 28, Day 84, or Day 140. Immunity was enhanced when the number of immunizing doses was increased from three to four. Resistance was also high in birds maintained on a proprietary mixture of amprolium, ethopabate, and sulphaquinoxaline (Pancoxin-Merck, Sharp and Dohme Ltd.) during immunization, although immunity to E. acervulina was lower in these birds. Oocyst production was lower in birds given mixed infections as compared with that of birds given pure infections with similar doses of oocysts. Competition between species did not inhibit the development of immunity in birds given low doses of mixed oocysts.  相似文献

Radiotelemetry is an important tool used to aid the understanding and conservation of cryptic and rare birds. The two bird species of the family Picathartidae are little-known, secretive, forest-dwelling birds endemic to western and central Africa. In 2005, we conducted a radio-tracking trial of Grey-necked Picathartes Picathartes oreas in the Mbam Minkom Mountain Forest, southern Cameroon, using neck collar (two birds) and tail-mounted (four birds) transmitters to investigate the practicality of radio-tracking Picathartidae. Three birds with tail-mounted transmitters were successfully tracked with the fourth, though not relocated for radio tracking, resighted the following breeding season. Two of these were breeding birds that continued to provision young during radio tracking. One neck-collared bird was found dead three days after transmitter attachment and the other neither relocated nor resighted. As mortality in one bird was potentially caused by the neck collar transmitter we recommend tail-mounted transmitters in future radio-tracking studies of Picathartidae. Home ranges, shown using minimum convex polygon and kernel estimation methods, were generally small (<0.5 km2) and centred around breeding sites. A minimum of 60 fixes were found to be sufficient for home range estimation.  相似文献

Feare, Christopher J. 1981. Breeding schedules and feeding strategies of Seychelles sea-birds. Ostrich 52:179–185.

A comparison of the breeding schedules of Seychelles seabirds with their feeding strategies showed no relation between synchronous breeding and the ranges over which the birds forage, but there was a relation with flock feeding. Flock feeding birds are largely dependent upon schools of predatory fishes that drive prey species to the surface, and food is thus localized and transient. Synchronous colonial breeding probably helps individuals to locate these localized food sources, but species that are dependent mainly on dispersed prey would derive no benefit from synchrony, and they do, in fact, breed throughout the year.

Within shoals of prey, food is probably superabundant, but feeding space may be limiting. The dark backs of flock feeding birds render them inconspicuous to foraging birds (conspecifics and other species), thereby tending to reduce competition for space within the feeding flocks. The white plumage of species that feed on dispersed prey appears to act as a spacing out mechanism, reducing interference between feeding birds.  相似文献

Raptors are commonly infected with two blood parasites of the family Haemoproteidae, Haemoproteus spp. and Leukocytozoon spp. To determine if age or length of time in captivity influence prevalence of Haemoproteus spp. and Leukocytozoon spp. infection in captive raptors, blood samples were collected from 55 birds from April 1999 to May 2000. Blood smears were examined for parasitemia and influence of age and length of time in captivity at the time of sample collection were compared. We found juvenile and adult birds were more likely to be infected with Leukocytozoon spp. than were nestlings (P = 0.006) and birds present for > 365 days were more likely to be infected with Haemoproteus spp. and/or Leukocytozoon spp. than were birds captive for < 365 days.  相似文献

Ninety-one birds of 23 species from Chile were examined for haematozoa; 13 birds of seven species harbored species of Haemoproteus, Leucocytozoon, Plasmodium, Trypanosoma and microfilariae. Haemoproteids (representing four species) were the most common parasites and occurred in 10 of the 13 infected birds.  相似文献

Given that body mass evolves non-randomly in birds, it is important to ask what factors might be responsible. One suggestion is that the rate at which individuals turn resources into offspring, termed reproductive power, might explain this non-randomness. This is because, in mammals, the body mass with the highest reproductive power is the most common (modal) one. Reproductive power was estimated for birds from data on energetic content of eggs and population productivity. According to the formulation of Brown et al. (1993), reproductive power is composed of two component processes: acquisition (acquiring resources and storing them in reproductive biomass) and conversion (converting reproductive biomass into offspring). As with mammals, estimates of reproductive power indicate that the most common body mass in birds is also the body mass that maximizes reproductive power. The relationship between reproductive power and diversity is different for species smaller than this modal body mass when compared to those that are larger. The relationship of body mass and reproductive power is different between birds and mammals in two ways: (1) the body mass that maximizes reproductive power is smaller in birds (33g) than in mammals (100g), and (2) mammals generate more reproductive power than an equivalent-sized bird. Reproductive power is determined primarily by acquisition in small birds and mammals, while it is determined by conversion in the largest birds and mammals. It is likely that reproductive power is closely tied to the evolution and diversification of body masses because it constrains the ways in which traits affecting fitness can evolve.  相似文献

Studies of hearing thresholds and frequency- and intensity-difference limens for birds are reviewed. Where possible these are related to limitations placed on auditory function by stimulus processing at peripheral levels of the avian auditory system. The high frequency limit of bird hearing is about 10 kHz; this limit is shown to be imposed in part by middle ear function and in part by cochlear mechanisms. For frequencies greater than 1.0 kHz, frequency-difference limens (DLs) show a similar dependence on frequency in birds as in mammals. Correspondingly, cochlear filtering is shown to be as good in birds as in mammals. At frequency below 1.0 kHz, frequency DLs in birds are poorer than in mammals. These low frequency differences may not be attributable to peripheral processing. Intensity-difference limens are worse in birds than mammals; there seem to be no differences in peripheral processing between birds and mammals which can account for this behavioral difference. Finally, complexities in processing at higher levels of the avian auditory system which have been related to detection of species-specific vocalizations are shown to appear in the first brainstem auditory nuclei.  相似文献

Migratory birds are known to play a role in the long‐distance transportation of microorganisms. To investigate whether this is true for rickettsial agents, we undertook a study to characterize tick infestation in populations of the migratory passerine bird Riparia riparia (Passeriformes: Hirundinidae), the sand martin. A total of 194 birds were sampled and ticks removed from infested birds. The ticks were identified as female Ixodes lividus (Acari: Ixodidae) using standard morphological and molecular techniques. Tick DNA was assayed to detect Rickettsia spp. using polymerase chain reaction and DNA was sequenced for species identification. A single Rickettsia spp. was detected in 100% of the ticks and was designated Rickettsia sp. IXLI1. Partial sequences of 17‐kDa and ompA genes showed greatest similarity to Rickettsia sp. TCM1, an aetiological agent of Japanese spotted fever‐like illness, previously described in Thailand. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Rickettsia sp. IXLI1 fitted neatly into a group containing strains Rickettsia japonica, Rickettsia sp. strain Davousti and Rickettsia heilongjiangensis. In conclusion, this research shows that U.K. migratory passerine birds host ticks infected with Rickettsia species and contribute to the geographic distribution of spotted fever rickettsial agents.  相似文献

The use of paddock trees as stepping stones by birds was assessedin a grazing landscape in southern New South Wales, Australia. A totalof 70 paddock tree sites was surveyed for 20 min each inthe morning, and 36 sites were surveyed again in the afternoon in March2000. During the surveys, the presence, direction of arrival, anddirection of departure to and from sites was recorded for each bird. Astepping stone effect of paddock trees was examined in two ways: (1) byanalysing the arrival and departure direction of birds relative tosurrounding vegetation cover, and (2) by analysing the departuredirection of birds relative to their arrival direction. An arrivaldirection was obtained for 150 independently acting groups of birds, anda departure direction was obtained for 203 independently acting groupsof birds. Both arrival and departure direction were obtained for 87independently acting groups. Foliage-foraging birds tended to followrelatively densely vegetated areas. There was some indication thatgranivores and nectarivores also preferred to move along denselyvegetated areas. This trend was absent for open-country species. Allgroups of birds examined tended to return to their place of origin ormove in the opposite direction of their arrival. This trend was mostpronounced for nectarivores and the foliage-foraging White-plumedHoneyeater (Lichenostomus penicillatus), and lesspronounced for open-country species and parrots. The results arediscussed in relation to the biology and ecology of the various speciesof birds. We conclude that paddock trees have the potential to enhancelandscape connectivity by acting as stepping stones to assist movement. This further highlights their conservation value as demonstrated in thefirst paper of this series.  相似文献

Whitfield, A. K. &; Cyrus, D. P. 1978. Feeding succession and zonation of aquatic birds at False Bay, Lake St Lucia. Ostrich 49:8-15.

Seasonal fluctuations in water levels at Lake St Lucia resulted in the inundation of depressions adjacent to the lake. Backwaters formed and were immediately colonized by aquatic invertebrates and fishes. Piscivorous birds dominated the early stages of the backwater feeding aggregations but with the decrease in water levels due to evaporation, crustacean and mollusc feeding birds became abundant. Both piscivorous and invertebrate-feeding wading birds formed a series of overlapping zones parallel to the shoreline.  相似文献

Success of the Kissimmee River Restoration Project will be evaluated in part by monitoring populations of wading birds (Pelecaniformes and Ciconiiformes) and waterfowl (Anseriformes). These two waterbird guilds were integral components of the pre‐channelization river–floodplain ecosystem, and both declined substantially following channelization. Restoration is expected to attract wading birds and waterfowl by reintroducing naturally fluctuating water levels, seasonal hydroperiods, and historic vegetation communities. Post‐construction aerial surveys (November 2001 to May 2008) within the Phase I restoration area indicate that the abundance and species richness of both wading birds and waterfowl have shown a positive restoration response thus far. Dry season abundance of aquatic wading birds and waterfowl has exceeded restoration expectations (≥30.6 birds/km2 and ≥3.9 birds/km2, respectively) each year since the completion of restoration Phase I in 2001. While there has been a significant positive restoration effect on waterfowl abundance, waterfowl species richness (n = 6) has not yet reached the restoration expectation of ≥13 species. Abundance of the terrestrial cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis), which increased dramatically after the majority of floodplain wetlands were converted to cattle pastures in the channelized system, has shown a significant negative response to restoration. It is anticipated that completion of the remaining phases of restoration (II/III), and implementation of the Kissimmee River Headwaters Revitalization water regulation schedule by 2019, will further increase and improve habitat for wading birds and waterfowl by reestablishing floodplain hydrology that more closely mimics historical conditions.  相似文献

From January 2002 to December 2004, 152 ticks were collected from 40 wild birds recovered in Santo André Natural Reserve and Monsanto Forestal Park, Portugal mainland. Five ticks species were identified from 22 species of birds, and new host record were provided for some species. In addition, 32 (21%) ticks were screened by PCR to detect infections with agents belonging to order Rickettsiales: Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Ehrlichia chaffeensis, and Rickettsia spp. PCR amplicons were obtained in 5 (15.6%) tick samples. Rickettsia DNA exhibiting gltA sequences similar to those of Rickettsia aeschilimannii, R. helvetica and R. massiliae were identified in Hyalomma marginatum, Ixodes ventalloi and in Rhipicephalus turanicus, respectively. This is the first report of rickettsiae infections in ticks collected from wild birds in Portugal. Giving the results presented above wild birds play an important role in the maintenance and dissemination of several tick species and associated rickettsiae.  相似文献

The hypothesis that evolution of body size in birds was a random process coupled with an absolute lower boundary on body mass was tested using data on 6217 species of extant birds. The test was based on the fact that subclades within birds that have body masses much larger than this minimum should not have skewed log body mass distributions, while clades close to this boundary should. Bird species were classified into 23 orders suggested by Sibley and Monroe (1988). Thirteen orders that had average log body masses greater than the average for all birds had significantly skewed log body mass distributions. This is inconsistent with the hypothesis that evolution of body size in birds is random, but is constrained only at the smallest body masses. Most orders of birds cannot be considered random samples from the parental distribution of all birds. When the pattern of body mass evolution in birds is reconstructed using an estimate of the phylogenetic relationships among orders, there are many more instances where a large taxon putatively originated from a smaller one than vice versa. The non-random nature of body mass evolution in birds is consistent with models that postulate that evolution is constrained by the ability of individuals to turn resources into offspring.  相似文献

One thousand and seventy-six birds of 26 families and 127 species were examined for hemoprotozoa; 404 birds (37%) of 41 species representing 17 families harbored one or more blood parasites. Most parasites were species of Haemoproteus which represented 95% of all parasitic infections detected. Prevalence of blood parasites in birds collected from four areas over a period of six years was relatively stable.  相似文献

Complex bird clocks.   总被引:8,自引:0,他引:8
The circadian pacemaking system of birds comprises three major components: (i) the pineal gland, which rhythmically synthesizes and secretes melatonin; (ii) a hypothalamic region, possibly equivalent to the mammalian suprachiasmatic nuclei; and (iii) the retinae of the eyes. These components jointly interact, stabilize and amplify each other to produce a highly self-sustained circadian output. Their relative contribution to overt rhythmicity appears to differ between species and the system may change its properties even within an individual depending, for example, on its state in the annual cycle or its photic environment. Changes in pacemaker properties are partly mediated by changes in certain features of the pineal melatonin rhythm. It is proposed that this variability is functionally important, for instance, for enabling high-Arctic birds to retain synchronized circadian rhythms during the low-amplitude zeitgeber conditions in midsummer or for allowing birds to adjust quickly their circadian system to changing environmental conditions during migratory seasons. The pineal melatonin rhythm, apart from being involved in generating the avian pacemaking oscillation, is also capable of retaining day length information after isolation from the animal. Hence, it appears to participate in photoperiodic after-effects. Our results suggest that complex circadian clocks have evolved to help birds cope with complex environments.  相似文献

Cantrell, M. A. &; Evans, S. M. 1981. Auditory communication in the blue waxbills Uraeginthus. Ostrich 52:104-107.

Field observations on the function of calls in the Redcheeked Cordon Bleu Uraeginthus bengalus, the Bluecapped Cordon Bleu U. cyanocephalus, and the Purple Grenadier U. (=Granatina) ianthinogaster were made in Kenya, East Africa. Individuals of all three species were usually seen in male-female pairs, and distinct calls were used to synchronize movement. Flight calls were made in rapid succession on take-off, but less frequently during flight. When birds on or near the ground became separated, repeated contact calls were used to locate and rejoin the partner. Alarm calls were rarely heard in the field, but usually originated from perched birds in relatively safe positions.

Laboratory experiments on the reactions of solitary caged birds to playback of calls were conducted using male U. bengalus. Separate playbacks of contact and flight calls both elicited a series of contact calls from the “lost” individual. In addition, a strong tendency to move towards contact calls was observed, the experiment confirming field observations that this call is used to locate and rejoin a partner after separation. Feeding birds usually flew up to perches in response to alarm calls and their own vocalizations were considerably reduced. The paper examines the function of these calls in pair synchronization and predator avoidance.  相似文献

F or some time past I have been engaged on the photographic analysis of a feather, and my attention has been concentrated on the glazed portion of the underside of the primaries of certain birds. Chandler (University of California Publications, Zoology, xiii. 1916, pp. 243–446), referring to the subject states:—
"The ventral edges of the rami are produced into horny keels usually with no evident cell structure, known as the ventral ridges. Although in the great majority of birds the ridge forms only a narrow, inconspicuous border for the ramus, in a few birds it is extraordinarily developed as a very thin translucent film, which bends distally and overlaps the following ramus, giving a smooth, glazed appearance to the under surface of the feather which is conspicuous at the most casual glance."  相似文献

Eight species representing 8 genera of gallinaceous birds were used: Alectoris graeca; Colinus virginianus; Coturnix coturnix; Gallus gallus; Meleagris gallopavo; Numidia meleagris; Pavo cristatus; Phasianus colchicus. Three week-old birds were dosed with sporulated oocysts of Eimeria tenella Beltsville strain. At 4, 24, 48, 72, 96, 120 and 144, and 168 hr after inoculation, 1-3 infected birds and uninoculated controls of each species were killed by cardiac exsanguination. Pieces of intestines were fixed and examined for stages of E. tenella as stained paraffin sections or indirect fluorescent antibody preparations. Oocyst counts were made in droppings collected for the first 6 days of the patent period. Sporozoites were found in the lamina propria of some birds of 5 species at 4 hr postinoculation, but no stages were found thereafter except in the breeds of G. gallus and A. gracea. At 144 and 168 hr postinoculation, a few macrogametes were found in the ceca of 2 A. gracea, but no oocysts were found in the feces. No statistical difference was found between the number of oocysts produced/bird in the breeds of G. gallus examined. It is evident from these observations the E. tenella did not complete its life cycle in several close phylogenetic relatives of G. gallus, even though in other studies this parasite was found to complete its life cycle in cell cultures derived from the same birds.  相似文献
