Summary Pharmacological doses of thyroxine are able to mimic the effects of long photoperiods in Japanese quail. In birds maintained on short daylengths thrice-weekly injections of 100 g thyroxine cause full testicular maturation at rates not greatly different from those seen if quail are exposed to long days. Thyroxine stimulates increases in the secretion of FSH and LH, in pituitary prolactin content and in the hypothalamic content of Gn-RH. The effects are dose-dependent. If female quail kept on short daylengths are given thyroxine their ovaries develop and they lay eggs. In castrated male quail on short days thyroxine causes a ten-fold increase in circulating LH within a week. Thyroxine injections are also capable of maintaining quail in a photorefractory state even when they are transferred to short daylengths. The results suggest that thyroxine mimics long days by acting high in the photoneuroendocrine system and does not simply act to facilitate hormone secretion per se. This is in line with growing evidence in mammals and birds that parts of the photoperiodic machinery are sensitive to thyroid hormones.Abbreviations Gn-RH gonadotropin releasing hormone - FSH follicle stimulating hormone - LH luteinizing hormone - T 4 thyroxine  相似文献

Hematological and serum biochemical changes in response to hemorrhagic stress were determined in both sexes of juvenile and adult Coturnix coturnix japonica over 3 day period following a mechanical hemorrhage of 30% of the calculated total blood volume. There was an initial shift posthemorrhage towards greater numbers of more mature erythrocytes and fewer circulating reticulocytes. Reticulocytosis was indicated 48-72 hr posthemorrhage. Glucose and lactic acid dehydrogenase levels increased after hemorrhage. Serum beta-glucuronidase was elevated only in adults. Japanese quail seemed to recover from hemorrhage more rapidly than had been reported for chickens, other birds and mammals.  相似文献

The photoperiodic and hormonal regulation of melatonin-synthesizing enzymes was determined in pineals of Coturnix quail. N-Acetyl transferase (NAT) and hydroxyindole-O-methyl transferase (HIOMT) were twofold higher in pineals of female and male Coturnix quail during exposure to darkness (16L:8D). Castration decreased pineal HIOMT activity in both female and male Coturnix, while selective gonadal steroids restored activity. NAT was not affected by castration or gonadal steroids. Implantation of melatonin into female Coturnix decreased both HIOMT and NAT activities. These results suggest that NAT is regulated primarily by photoperiodicity, while HIOMT activity is a consequence of the external perceptive environment and the internal hormonal milieu, with both enzymic activities modulated by the feedback inhibitory influence of endogenous melatonin.  相似文献

Adult male Japanese quail were transferred from long to short days. Plasma testosterone and dihydrotestosterone quickly decreased and this endocrine response was followed by a regression of the cloacal gland, an androgen-target organ. After about a month, a spontaneous recovery of gonadal activity was observed in some but not all birds. It was not associated with obvious shifts in the circadian system. The physiological bases of this spontaneous recovery are discussed as well as the detailed relationships between plasma testosterone and cloacal gland size.  相似文献

Summary The ependymal linings of the median eminence were destroyed by electric cautery or intraventricular injection of picric acid in the rat and Japanese quail. In these animals the ventricular lumen near the median eminence disappeared due to adhesion of lesioned walls on both sides of the third ventricle. Electric lesions of the ependymal layer containing tanycytes did not induce appreciable disturbance in the estrous cycles. Rats in which tanycytes were lesioned by picric acid displayed 4-day estrous cycles after prolonged diestrus (10–22 days). After destruction of tanycytes in the quail, a photostimulated gonadal growth was observed. It is concluded that the tanycyte transport of the ventricular fluid to capillaries of the portal vessels appears unnecessary for maintenance of adenohypophysial gonadotrophic activities.Supported by a grant from the Ministry of Education of Japan and by a grant from the Ford Foundation. Sicklepod Fatty Acid response to photoperiod   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0       下载免费PDF全文
Sicklepod (Cassia obtusifolia L.) grew taller and heavier in a 12-hour photoperiod than in photoperiods longer or shorter. Total vegetative fatty acid content was maximal under 14-hour photoperiods as were unsaturated and branched chain fatty acids. Odd-numbered fatty acid content was highest under 16-hour photoperiods, and evennumbered fatty acids tended to be more concentrated under 14-hour photoperiods. Age of plant influenced total vegetative fatty acid content.  相似文献

Summary Japanese quail,Coturnix coturnix japonica, which were acclimated to a simulated altitude of 6100 m for six weeks were compared with control quail maintained at sea level. Body weight initially decreased in both groups, and by the end of six weeks the altitude quail weighed an average of 8% less than the control quail (Fig. 1). Compared with the controls, the altitude birds exhibited mean increases in hematocrit ratio and blood hemoglobin concentration of 31 and 37% respectively (Fig. 2). Blood volume was 36% higher in the altitude acclimated quail, while plasma volume was unchanged (Fig. 3). Exposure to chronic hypoxia resulted in hypertrophy of the right ventricle, while left ventricular mass was unchanged (Fig. 4). Rates of O2 consumption (VO2) at 5°C were continuously recorded as ambient PO2 was slowly reduced from 155 to 30 torr. VO2 was significantly higher at any given PO2 in the altitude quail (Fig. 5). Exposure to reduced PO2 resulted in a significantly greater decrease in body temperature in the control quail than in the altitude acclimated birds (Fig. 6).  相似文献

Summary The effect of photoperiod and melatonin treatment on cold resistance and thermogenesis of quails was studied. The birds were acclimated for 8 weeks to short day (8L:16D) or long day (16L:8D) conditions, and 8 of 16 quails in each group were implanted with melatonin capsules. One group of quails was maintained outside in an aviary during winter. Oxygen consumption ( ) body temperature (T b, recorded with temperature transmitters) and shivering (integrated pectoral EMG) were recorded continuously, and samples of heart rate and breathing rate were picked up when ambient temperature was decreased stepwise from 27 down to –75 °C. Heat production maximum (HPmax), cold limit, lower critical temperature, basal metabolic rate (BMR) and thermal conductance were determined. The results show that short day, cold and melatonin treatment improved cold resistance and thermal insulation of quils when compared with quails acclimated to long day conditions. An increase in HPmax was induced only by melatonin treatment. The results suggest that the acclimatization of quails is under control of the pineal gland. The linear increase of shivering intensity with at moderate cold load shows that shivering is the primary source for thermoregulatory heat production in the quail. AtT a's below –40 °C shivering remained constant although , heart rate and breathing rate continued to increase with increasing cold load. This could indicate the existence of a nonshivering thermogenesis in birds. Unlike to mammals, this non-shivering thermogenesis in birds would serve as secondary source of heat supporting shivering thermogenesis in severe coldAbbreviations BMR basal metabolic rate - ECG electrocardiogram - EMG electromyogram - NST nonshivering thermogenesis - SMR standard metabolic rate  相似文献

1. Hematological responses to hemorrhage by phlebotomy with and without replacement of blood volume with saline were measured in juvenile and adult male Coturnix coturnix japonica. 2. Recovery of total peripheral erythrocyte numbers and total peripheral leukocyte numbers occurred within 72 hr postphlebotomy in both treatment groups. 3. Saline replacement of blood volume following hemorrhage increased the total numbers and differential percentages of circulating reticulocytes at 72 hr postphlebotomy above the reticulocyte values of phlebotomized quail receiving no saline in both adult and juvenile Japanese quail.  相似文献

Summary Immunocytochemistry was used to determine if photoperiod and/or sex have any effect on the pattern of the luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) system in the brain of the Japanese quail. Immunopositive perikarya were found within three major areas of the brain: the rostral paraolfactory lobe, the preoptic, and the septal region. A quantitative analysis of LHRH cell numbers was performed on male and female quail after two photoperiodic treatments: sexually mature birds exposed to 24 weeks of 20 h light: 4 h darkness (20L4D), and birds with a regressed reproductive system (induced by transfer from a photoregime of 20L4D to 25 short days of 8L16D). Two-way analysis of variance showed that short-day males display significantly (p < 0.05) more immunopositive perikarya (607 + 134) than long-day males (291 + 114), short-day females (293 + 103) or long-day females (330 + 92). The density of LHRH-immunoreactive nerve fibres and the intensity of the immunostaining in the median eminence were always greater in long-day sexually mature quail (male and female) than in animals exposed to 25 days of 8L16D. These results demonstrate that the LHRH system of the quail is influenced by photoperiod and mirrors sexual differentiation.  相似文献

Common responses to hypoxia include decreased body temperature (Tb) and decreased energy metabolism. In this study, the effects of hypoxia and hypercapnia on Tb and metabolic oxygen consumption (V.O2) were investigated in Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica). When exposed to hypoxia (15, 13, 11 and 9% O2), Tb decreased only at 11% and 9% O2 compared to normoxia; quail were better able to maintain Tb during acute hypoxia after a one-week acclimation to 10% O2. V.O2 also decreased during hypoxia, but at 9% O2 this was partially offset by increased anaerobic metabolism. Tb and V.O2 responses to 9% O2 were exaggerated at lower ambient temperature (Ta), reflecting a decreased lower critical temperature during hypoxia. Conversely, hypoxia had little effect on Tb or V.O2 at higher Ta (36 °C). We conclude that Japanese quail respond to hypoxia in much the same way as mammals, by reducing both Tb and V.O2. No relationship was found between the magnitudes of decreases in Tb and V.O2 during 9% O2, however. Since metabolism is the source of heat generation, this suggests that Japanese quail increase thermolysis to reduce Tb. During hypercapnia (3, 6 and 9% CO2), Tb was reduced only at 9% CO2 while V.O2 was unchanged.  相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine the effect of injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS, from S. typhimurium) or muramyl dipeptide (MDP, N-acetylmuramyl-L-ala-isoglutamine) in Japanese quail. Doses of MDP between 0.3 and 10 mg/kg body wt. had no effect on body temperature. In contrast, doses of 1.0-22.5 mg LPS/kg body wt. caused significant increases in body temperature. None of the doses of LPS or MDP resulted in mortality. The febrile response to LPS was diminished following a second injection 48 h after the first, and was absent following a third injection. Plasma zinc, an indicator of the acute phase response, was significantly reduced by either LPS or MDP after the first injection (P<0.001), but not after the second or third injection. Splenic interleukin 1-beta (IL-1beta) mRNA expression was increased after the first and last injection of LPS (P<0.001), but only after the first injection of MDP (P<0.005). Hepatic IL-1beta mRNA expression was increased after the first, but not the third injection of LPS (P<0.001), while MDP had no effect. These data indicate that Japanese quail are less sensitive to MDP than LPS, and that quail demonstrate tolerance to LPS following repeated injections.  相似文献

The responses of magnocellular neurons of paraventricular nuclei (PVN) and changes to adrenal activity to water deprivation in Japanese quail maintained under gonado-inhibitory and stimulatory photoperiods were examined. Water deprivation of 4 days resulted in a 12% decrease in body weight of sexually regressed short day (SD, 6L:18D) quail, while the decrease was more (18%) in sexually stimulated long day (LD, 16L:8D) quail. The increase in plasma osmolality following water deprivation was also more (47%) in LD than to SD quail (36%). Under the LD condition, quail had increased numbers, sizes and immunostaining of ir-AVT neurons of PVN compared to SD condition. A significant increase in the number of ir-AVT neurons was observed following 4 days of water deprivation in both SD and LD quail compared to their respective fully hydrated controls. However, the degree of response was more under the LD compared to the SD condition suggesting that gonado-stimulatory long days increase the activity/response of the AVT system. Increased adrenal ascorbic acid content (i.e., activity) was also observed to quail of LD when compared to SD treatment. However, osmotic stress led to adrenal hypertrophy and hyperactivity of quail of both of the photoperiodic regimes. Our findings indicate that not only osmotic stress but also photo-gonadal stimulation upregulates the expression of hypothalamic AVT genes and increases the localization of ir-AVT in many neurons of PVN. The above results support the existence of a parallel adrenal-gonad relationship and increase in adrenal function during osmotic stress, which also leads to simultaneous increase in AVT system. We conclude that photo-sexual conditions alter hypothalamic vasotocinergic and adrenal activity in Japanese quail and the degree of stimulation of the two systems following osmotic stress is higher under gonado-stimulatory LD conditions.  相似文献

Summary An inbreeding study and two selection experiments with Japanese quail are reported which have been conducted on a comparative basis with similar work in chickens.Japanese quail exhibit pronounced inbreeding depression of reproductive traits such as egg production, fertility, hatchability and viability. Compared to the domestic fowl, the quail populations were found to show three times more damage from inbreeding for their entire reproductive cycle. These findings raise some questions concerning the history of the quail's domestication, and the breeding techniques required for developing highly inbred laboratory populations of that species.Selection experiments for high body weight at 6 weeks of age have shown response patterns comparable to those found in chicken populations. Inbreeding effects have tended to obscure some of the genetic gains in egg number which could be demonstrated only in appropriate comparisons with control populations.

The effect of an asymmetrical skeleton photoperiod scheduleee was studied on the gonadal development in a tropical finch, the weaver bird (Ploceus philippinus). The schedul comprised a short nonstimulatory primary photoperiod of 6 hrs and a secondary much shorter lightperiod given as a 15-min light pulse at different times in the dark period. The light pulse 11 hrs after the basic period resulted in gonadal stimulation, while light pulse in contimuation with the basic period or 8, 14 or 21 hrs after the basicperiod was not stimulatory. The "photoinducible phase" was much more precisely outlined by shifting the birds from an 8-h to a 10-h pulse, and from an 11-h to 12-h pulse and was found to be very short, lasting about an hour falling between 11 and 12 hrs after the primary light period. The short photoinducible phase may be of an adaptive value since in the tropics the difference between the shortest and the longest daylength is also rather small (3 hrs and 15 min at Varanasi, 25degrees N). Clearly the weaver bird possesses a fine time-measuring device involving an endogenous circadian rhythm in photosensitivity. In nature, spermatogenesis in this bird also begins in March when the daylength exceeds 11 hrs (thus perhaps coinciding with the photoinducible phase). In rather small, photoperiod may not serve as a cue to trigger seasonal reproductive periodicity, it seems that photoperiod can act as a Zeitgeber for the initiation of spermatogenesis in the weaver bird at least.  相似文献

Summary A technique has been developed for the investigation of the photopigment involved in the photoperiodic control of reproduction in Japanese quail,Coturnix coturnix. When these photoreceptors were exposed to white or monochromatic light a clear relationship was found between light intensity and the extent of photo-induced luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion. A spectroradiometric investigation of the passage of light through the skull and brain enabled us to illuminate the hypothalamic region with equal numbers of photons at a range of wavelengths. Action spectra were then conducted and showed a photopigment with a peak sensitivity at wavelengths near 500 nm. An excellent match was obtained when the standard absorption spectrum for a rhodopsin was fitted to the action spectrum, suggesting a rhodopsin maximally sensitive at 492 nm. The absolute sensitivity of the photoreceptors was calculated at a range of wavelengths: with light at 500 nm, 2.85×10–12 E·cm–2·s–1 triggered the photoperiodic response. This level of sensitivity is matched only by the rhodopsin visual pigments.Abbreviations LH luteinizing hormone - T transmission  相似文献
