This paper is a multivariate generalization of the work of Chiang and van den Berg [Math. Biosci. 62:237-251 (1982)] to model the parity-specific reproductive patterns of female populations using a life table approach. It is also an adaptation of mortality competing risks theory and multiple decrement life tables to the study of parity-specific human fertility. Competing risks in the fertility context are risks of types of reproductive outcome: normal reproductive outcome (type 0); adverse reproductive outcome of type 1; adverse reproductive outcome of type 2; etc. We focus on applicability to studies in demography and reproductive epidemiology involving current populations.  相似文献

This article analyses the Urban Poverty and Family Life Survey of Chicago and an urban subsample of the National Survey of Families and Households to examine race and ethnic variation in the occurrence and consequences of birth versus marriage pathways to family formation. Results based on multiple‐decrement life table analysis and multi‐variate life table regression analysis reveal strong race and poverty effects on pathways to family formation, but Hispanic origin does not systematically influence the odds that women will enter family life via marriage versus birth. We show stronger race effects on pathways to family formation for the Chicago sample owing to the much higher incidence of teen parenting among black inner‐city residents. Results also suggest lasting economic consequences of non‐marital fertility, irrespective of whether women eventually marry or divorce subsequent to a premarital birth.  相似文献

Abstract Age‐stage, two‐sex life tables of the melon fly, Bactrocera cucurbitae (Coquillett) (Diptera: Tephritidae), reared on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), sponge gourd (Luffa cylindrica Roem) and a carrot medium (mashed Daucus carota L. mixed with sucrose and yeast hydrolysate) were constructed under laboratory conditions at 25 ± 1°C, 65%± 0.5% relative humidity, and a photoperiod 12 : 12 h (L : D). The intrinsic rates of increase of B. cucurbitae were 0.144 6, 0.141 2 and 0.068 8 days on cucumber, sponge gourd, and carrot medium, respectively. The highest net reproduction rate was 172 offspring per fly reared on sponge gourd. The mean generation times of B. cucurbitae ranged from 34 days reared on cucumber to 56 days reared on carrot medium. The life history raw data was analyzed using the traditional female age‐specific life table and compared to results obtained using the age‐stage, two‐sex life table. When the age‐specific female life table is applied to an age‐stage‐structured two‐sex population, survival and fecundity curves will be improperly manipulated due to an inability to include variation in preadult development time. We discussed different interpretations of the relationship between the net reproductive rate and the intrinsic rate of increase to clarify possible misunderstanding in the literature.  相似文献

A life table estimates probabilities of surviving and of dying as well as death rates, as these would apply in a stationary population with the same underlying continuous mortality curve as the observed population. We have derived approximations to the probability of surviving that require no iteration, do not depend on graduation or interpolation, and appear to give as precise results as interpolated or iterated tables. On the side of theroy we show that methods due to T.N.E. Greville and to Reed and Merrell are special cases of our formula (3). The new approach is extended to cause-deleted tables and to multiple decrement.  相似文献

Abstract

The life table for the total population, when constructed from the overall age‐specific mortality rates, becomes inconsistent with the life tables for its between‐heterogeneous subpopulations. The consistent life table for the total population can be derived from those for the subpopulations, when the latter are constructed with radixes proportional to the distribution of these subpopulations at birth. As an example, this consistency approach is used to reconstruct the total life table for the United States for 1984 from those for white males, white females, nonwhite males, and nonwhite females, and to compare it with the corresponding life table computed by the conventional method by the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics. The expectation of life at birth for the total population by the consistency approach is found to be 74.37, which is 0.38 year lower than the NCHS number of 74.75.  相似文献

The sweet potato whitefly, Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) (Hem.: Aleyrodidae), is a major pest of agricultural and greenhouse crops worldwide. In this study, we used the age-stage two-sex life table to evaluate sub-lethal effects of the botanical extract taken from Calotropis procera (Asclepiadaceae) on B. tabaci and compared these effects with those obtained from exposing the pest to the four synthetic pesticides, abamectin, imidacloprid, diazinon and pymetrozin. The toxicity of the chemical insecticides and C. procera extract on adult whiteflies was assayed using the leaf-dip method. The exposed whiteflies showed significant differences in the net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rates of increase (r), finite rate of increase (λ) and mean generation times (T). The lowest amounts of R0, r, λ and T parameters were observed in diazinon (2.373, 0.036, 1.036, and 24.590) and pymetrozin (2.455, 0.036, 1.036, and 25.281), respectively. Additionally, the parameters obtained from the age-stage two-sex life table method were compared to those of traditional female age-specific life table. Statistical analysis revealed no significant difference among parameters obtained from the two life table methods. Results of this study implies on potential of C. procera extract for control of B. tabaci comparable to chemical pesticides.  相似文献

Life table studies allow for a better understanding of mortality factors against insect pests. It assesses each mortality factor and its parameters in population suppression. Neoleucinodes elegantalis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is one of the major pests of solanaceous crops in South America. The background information provided by life table studies might be used for developing management strategies for controlling N. elegantalis. Thus, the aim of this study was to identify and quantify the mortality factors of N. elegantalis in tomato cultivation by using life tables. The results were obtained from 64 ecological life tables. The mortality factors for eggs, larvae and pupae were due to rain, fruit drop, predation, parasitism and unviability caused by physiological disorder and diseases. The percentage of total death for eggs, larvae and pupae were 64.2%, 24.9% and 5.93%, respectively. The highest rates of mortality were caused by predation and parasitism. Thus, mortality of N. elegantalis caused by natural enemies might be used as a basis for determining which methods are better for controlling N. elegantalis while having the lowest possible impact on its natural enemies.  相似文献

The relationship between the number of immature individuals of Tetranychus urticae used to calculate life table parameters (sex ratio, development time, immature survival and the intrinsic rate of increase) and the accuracy of such determinations has been estimated. Additionally, the approach used in this paper, which considers each female offspring as a separate replicate, has allowed statistical comparison of the parameters obtained. At least the first four eggs from 16 females should be followed up to completion of their development to prevent the occurrence significant differences for the selected parameters. However, our results indicate that optimal sample sizes are different for the different life table parameters considered and should adapt to the preset level of accuracy.  相似文献

This article extends the recent abridged life-table method of Hsieh. It generalizes the conventional discrete (abridged and complete) life tables into a continuous life table that can produce life-table functions at any age and develops a unified method of life-table construction that simplifies the disparate laborious procedures used in the traditional approach of constructing abridged and complete life tables. A set of precise procedures based on the complete cubic spline for the main body of the table and a mortality law for advanced ages is developed for estimating the basic and nonbasic life-table functions from a given mortality schedule. The proposed method can also produce more life-table functions than other existing methods. The method is illustrated with Canadian data.  相似文献

Photon imaging is a new technique for the quantitative analysis of bioluminescence and chemiluminescence and can be performed both at the macro and micro levels. The high sensitivity and spatial resolution of photon-counting cameras have resulted in the development of new applications in the life sciences. At the macro level, imaging is a valuable tool for the rapid identification of biological samples emitting long-lasting glows in assays using microtitre plates or filter formats (immunoassays, DNA probes, phagocytosis, gene expression, metabolite and drug analysis) and also for in vivo studies of promoter activity. At the micro level, low-light imaging can be used for analysing multiple analytes on micro sensors and for advanced cell analysis (immunocytology, in situ hybridization, identification of cells or tissues expressing the luciferase gene, intracellular or intercellular protein traffic, metabolite analysis and imaging of Ca2+ flux and phosphorylation reactions). Two-dimensional photon-counting instrumentation is a versatile and powerful research tool for imaging and is complementary to conventional luminometers. The main applications to the life sciences involve many types of luminescence assays and can be performed on multiple samples in standard and non-standard formats. Photon-counting coupled to imaging is very helpful in selecting microorganisms or cells expressing bioluminescent genes. Measurements can be made in vitro and in vivo with a sensitivity comparable to that of phototube luminometers.  相似文献

A comparison of patient satisfaction between treatment with conventional complete dentures and overdentures in the elderly: a literature review Background: It has been stated that mandibular overdentures are more satisfactory than conventional dentures, but problems relating to the use of retrospective ratings, lack of control group and sequential provision of treatment may compromise the findings. Objective: To establish a comparison between treatment with conventional complete dentures and implant‐retained overdentures in elderly patients by conducting a literature review. Materials and methods: A search of English language peer‐review literature was completed using Medline up to 2008 focusing on evidence‐based research. Randomised clinical trials (RCTs) and longitudinal prospective studies were favoured in the review, using a general hierarchical classification. Articles that did not focus exclusively on the comparison of patient satisfaction between complete dentures and overdentures were excluded from further evaluation. The last search was conducted in February 2008. Key terms included quality of life, patient satisfaction, edentulism, complete denture and overdenture. Results: Among the 90 articles found in the initial search, 27 met the inclusion criteria. This included 18 RCTs and eight prospective and one cohort study. Most of the articles stated superiority of the mandibular implant‐retained overdenture therapy over the conventional complete denture regarding patient satisfaction and quality of life. Conclusion: Even with implant treatment presenting higher patient satisfaction and improvement of quality of life, it was not possible to establish a direct comparison between the studies due to differences in adopted methodologies.  相似文献

The Andean potato tuber moth, Symmetrischema tangolias (Gyen) [Lepidoptera, Gelechiidae], is an economically important pest of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) in the mid‐elevated Andean region and an invasive pest of partially global importance. Determination of the pest's population life table parameters is essential for understanding population development and growth under a variety of climates and as part of a pest risk analysis. The development, mortality and reproduction were studied in two pest populations (from Peru and Ecuador) in which cohorts of each life stage were exposed to different constant temperatures ranging from 10°C to 28°C. Using the Insect Life Cycle Modeling software, nonlinear equations were fitted to the data and an overall phenology model established to simulate life table parameters based on temperature. The temperature‐dependent development curve was statistically well described for eggs by Ratkowsky's model and for larvae and pupae by Taylor's model. Variability in development time among individuals independent of temperature was significantly described by a log‐logistic model. Temperature effects on immature mortality were described using different nonlinear models. Optimal temperature for survival was between 14° and 17°C. Temperature effects on adult senescence and oviposition time were described by simple exponential models; within‐group variability was described by a Weibull distribution function. Fecundity per female due to temperature followed a nonlinear model indicating maximum reproduction at ~17°C. The established model revealed good convergence with historical life tables established at fluctuating temperatures. The results confirm that S. tangolias is more adapted to cooler temperature than the common potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller). S. tangolias develops at temperatures within the range of 8–28.8°C with a maximum finite rate of population increase (=1.053) at 21°C. The established process‐based physiological model can be used globally to simulate life table parameters for Stangolias based on temperature and should prove helpful for evaluating the potential establishment risk and in adjusting pest management programmes.  相似文献

Abstract: Lathrolestes ensator (Brauns) was the only parasitoid species reared from larvae of apple sawfly Hoplocampa testudinea (Klug) collected in Dutch orchards. The life history parameters of apple sawfly and its parasitoid L. ensator were investigated in field and semi‐field experiments. Usually, the adult parasitoids emerge in synchrony with the preferred host stage, the second instar sawfly larvae. Parasitoid females carried 120–175 eggs, but never laid more than half this number. The mortality of sawfly eggs and larvae varied from 75 and 99%. The eggs and mining larvae are most vulnerable, as the older larvae survive for 90% on average. Three factors at least determine how many of the descending larvae become adult sawfly or parasitoid next spring. The failure of descending larvae to construct a cocoon varied from 7 to 31% and was highest in clay soil. Probably a similar mechanical hindrance prohibited more emerging adults, of both sawfly and L. ensator, from attaining the surface in heavier soils next spring. Relatively more sawfly prepupae than parasitoids died in the cocoon stage, from fungus disease or other causes, but more parasitoids than hosts stayed in prolonged diapause. Mainly due to this last factor, the overall result was a decrease of the parasitoid : host ratio during the first season underground. A life table based on survival rates during various life stages yields a net reproductive rate of up to 2.4 daughters per female sawfly. It indicates that 60% of the sawfly larvae need to be parasitized to stop population growth, or correspondingly less when more than 75% of the host eggs and young larvae are killed by predators or other causes.  相似文献

With a population of over 131 million and a fertility rate of 29.9 per 1000, population growth constitutes a primary threat to continued economic growth and development in Bangladesh. One strategy that has been used to cease further increases in fertility in Bangladesh involves using family planning outreach workers who travel throughout rural and urban areas educating women regarding contraceptive alternatives. This study uses a longitudinal database to assess the impact of family planning outreach workers' contact upon contraceptive switching and upon the risk of an unintended pregnancy. Using longitudinal data on contraceptive use from the Operations Research Project (ORP) of the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research (ICDDR,B) in Bangladesh, multiple decrement life table analysis and multilevel, discrete-time competing risk hazards models were used to estimate the cumulative probabilities of switching to an alternative form of contraceptive use after a woman engaged in a discussion with an outreach worker. After controlling for the effects of socio-demographic and economic characteristics, the analysis revealed that family planning outreach workers' contact with women significantly decreases the risk of transitioning to the non-use of contraceptives. This contact also reduces the risk of an unintended pregnancy. Family planning workers' contact with women is associated with the increased risk of a woman switching from one modern method to another modern method. The study results indicate that side-effects and other method-related reasons are the two primary reasons for contraceptive discontinuation in rural Bangladesh.  相似文献

This article discusses the application of statistical techniques in the analysis of the life table. Using a piece-wise continuous model for the mortality pattern, the maximum likelihood estimates of the probabilities of dying, qi in a life table are obtained. From the form of the covariance matrix it is deduced that the estimates are asymptotically independent. The distribution of qi and its large sample variance are also derived.  相似文献

Abstract

Two factors were examined to determine their effect on the life history, reproduction and life table parameters in the predacious mite Phytoseiulus macropilis (Banks) in the laboratory. The factors studied included multiple mating and various prey stages of Tetranychus urticae Koch. When females fed on mixed actives (protonymphs and deutonymphs) of T. urticae, the fecundity of females mated more than once was 1.7 times higher than in females mated only once, also oviposition period and adult longevity was longer. The adult longevity and life span of P. macropilis were similar when fed on mixed actives, eggs (0 – 24-h-old) and (0 – 48-h-old) of T. urticae, while both periods were increased and reproduction was higher when fed on older eggs (72 – 96-h-old) of T. urticae. The total number of eggs deposited by females was significantly higher on eggs of (various ages) than on mixed actives of T. urticae. Life table parameters showed that a diet of (72 – 96-h-old) eggs of T. urticae provided the longest generation time (11.066 days) and female longevity (33.54 days) as well as the highest intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm = 0.36755) and greatest total fecundity which resulted in the highest net reproductive rate (Ro = 58.4136) value. The adult female consumed daily an average of 6.8 mixed actives of T. urticae during its life cycle, while it was increased to 13.6 during the oviposition period. The daily (72 – 96-h-old) eggs of T. urticae consumed by female P. macropilis during its life cycle and adult longevity was significantly higher than that recorded on either (0 – 24-h-old) or (0 – 48-h-old) eggs of T. urticae.  相似文献

The effects of imidacloprid, propargite, and pymetrozine on the common green lacewing, Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens) were investigated in the laboratory, using the IOBC-system and the life table response experiment. Residual glass plate bioassays were carried out using two-day-old larvae at the Iranian maximum field recommended rate of each commonly used pesticide. All three tested pesticides produced significant adverse effects on pre-imaginal survival (p < 0.01). Imidacloprid had no significant effect on fecundity, but propargite and pymetrozin caused significant reductions (p < 0.05). According to the IOBC classification, imidacloprid was found to be harmless (E = 27.44%); propargite (E = 49.78%) and pymetrozine (E = 66.9%) were slightly harmful. Life table assays revealed that imidacloprid and propargite had no significant effects on the intrinsic rate of natural increase, while pymetrozine caused a 34% reduction in r m value (p < 0.05). Propargite was non-toxic to C. carnea under the tested conditions. In the case of imidacloprid, using a glass plate as test substrate led to␣underestimation of its effects. The life table assay showed more adverse effects of pymetrozine than the IOBC method.  相似文献

Key factors are those causes that are most responsible for the observed changes in population density between generations. Stage-frequency of alfalfa weevil was modeled using Manly-1997 model. Multiple decrement life table parameters from an 8 year-field study were analyzed using traditional and λ contribution methods. In traditional method, the key factor was determined as k LII, the death of period-two larvae from all mortality factors, whereas in λ contribution method, the key factor was determined as b 2&3, oviposition rate of females per square meter. These differences result directly from the sensitivity of the population growth rate, λ, to variation of both k and b in various stages of the weevil. Among all mortality factors, only k LI-Z, the death of period-one larvae from the entomopathogenic fungus, Zoophthora phytonomi (Arthur) Batko (Zygomycetes: Entomophthoraceae), k LII and k LII-Z, the death of period-two larvae from Z. phytonomi, acted in a density dependent fashion. Remaining factors were independent of population densities affected. Using λ contribution method, life table approach still remains a major way of studying the dynamics of field populations for applied ecologists and population managers.  相似文献
