The Pretoria Bone Collection began with the inception of the Department of Anatomy and the Medical School at the University of Pretoria in August 1942. Since then the collection has grown from a student aid to a resource for research. In the year 2000, the Pretoria Bone Collection was reorganised. The research material was divided into skulls, complete postcranial and incomplete postcranial remains. The collection presently contains 290 complete skeletons, 704 complete skulls and 541 complete postcranial remains. This paper presents information on the composition of this collection and hopes to heighten both national and international awareness of the collection and research opportunities in South Africa.  相似文献

The Raymond A. Dart Collection of Human Skeletons (Dart Collection) is housed in the School of Anatomical Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, and comprises one of the largest documented cadaver‐derived human skeletal assemblages in the world. This collection originated in the early 1920s as a result of the efforts of Raymond Dart and continues to grow. The skeletons included represent varied indigenous and immigrant populations from southern Africa, Europe and Asia. This contribution documents the history of the collection and provides an updated inventory and demographic assessment of this valuable research collection. According to a recent inventory the Dart Collection currently comprises 2,605 skeletons representing individuals from regional SA African (76%), White (15%), Coloured (4%) and Indian (0.3%) populations. A large proportion of the skeletons (71%) represent males. The recorded ages at death range from the first year to over 100 years of age, but the majority of individuals died between the ages of 20 and 70. The Dart Collection has been affected by collection procedures based on availability. All of the cadavers collected before 1958, and large proportions subsequently, were derived from unclaimed bodies in regional South African hospitals. Some details of documentation (age at death, population group) are estimates and some aspects of the collection demographics (sex ratios) do not closely reflect any living South African population. Our inventory and analysis of the Dart Collection is aimed to assist researchers planning research on the materials from this collection. Am J Phys Anthropol, 2009. © 2009 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Edgar Nelson Transeau, botanist-ecologist-phycologist, accumulated a worldwide collection of algal specimens for the compilation of a monograph on the algal family Zygnemataceae, published in 1951. Following his death on January 26, 1960 this Collection remained at The Ohio State University, Columbus until 1978 when it was transferred to the University of Arizona, Tucson. A set of glycerine-preserved specimens on microscope slides is the major item of the Collection with the number of species represented as follows: Spirogyra (138), Mougeotia (52), Zygnema (45), Zygnemopsis (16), Sirogonium (9), Debarya (9), Zygogonium (4), Mougeotiopsis (1) and Entransia (1). All specimens of Pleurodiscus, Sirocladium, Temnogametum and Temnogyra are unidentified. With the Transeau Collection it was demonstrated that an old collection need not be an historical relic, but does have continued usefulness. Potential future use is a powerful justification for maintaining seemingly useless collections whose accumulation often represents the expenditure of untold time, effort and money on the part of many persons and institutions worldwide. Further, as man continues to alter his environment and species are destroyed, collections with long histories become increasingly more valuable. Specimens of the Transeau Collection were subjected to modern techniques, not available earlier, resulting in improved characterization of zygospore-wall structure by scanning electron microscopy and the determination of nuclear DNA by cytofluorometry.  相似文献

Owing in large part to the foresight and efforts of Wally Welker, the National Museum of Health and Medicine has become a major repository for collections of brain specimens vital to the study of neurobehavioral evolution. From its origins in the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, with the collection of largely pathological specimens assembled by Paul Yakovlev, the museum has added to its resources four additional extensive collections, largely consisting of specimens acquired specifically for comparative and evolutionary studies: Welker's collection from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, John I. Johnson's collection from Michigan State University, the Adolf Meyer Collection from the Johns Hopkins University, and the Elizabeth Crosby collections from the University of Michigan. We describe here the history and contents of each of these five collections, to inform the scientific field of the extent and details of these remarkable resources.  相似文献

In September 1999 the author first visited Sardinia in order to participate in a meeting of the federative International Committee on Anatomical Terminology, organised by Professor Alessandro Riva. Our stay in Cagliari coincided with the 200th anniversary of the appointment of Francesco Antonio Boi as the first Professor of Anatomy at the University of Cagliari. After a small ceremony to mark this bi-centennial, we visited the Collection of Anatomical Waxes of Clemente Susini at the University. The fascinating history of this collection has been described in various publications (Zanobio, 1979; Cattaneo and Riva, 1993; Riva et al., 1997) and was further expounded by Professor Riva at the bi-centenary.  相似文献

The University of Connecticut presents the “Benthic Marine Algal Herbarium of Long Island Sound Digital Collection.” The collection is available on the web for teaching and identification purposes. Phase One of this project will be finished later by early next year. Currently, the collection has approximately 60% of all Long Island Sound macroalgae species. The taxonomy is part of a collaboration between the University of Connecticut and the Northeast Algal Society (NEAS). Thus far, the specimens have come from Dr. Charles Yarish's herbarium and from the Environmental Laboratory at Millstone Power Station on Long Island Sound. The botanical illustrations are from “Illustrated Key to the Seaweeds of New England” by Martine Villalard‐Bohnsack. Database features include the ability to create searches and generate sets based on subjects, division, class, order, family, genus, habitat, species, keyword, and location. Data retrieved includes JPG image, cataloged data, map regions, synonyms, and illustrated microscopic, cross section and surface view for some species. The web site is available for use at: http://www.algae.uconn.edu  相似文献

An Unusual Xylotheque with Plant Illustrations from Early Meiji Japan. Two unusual wood collections, reported previously in the collections of the Botanical Museum at Berlin-Dahlem and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, take the form of framed plant illustrations painted on boards made from the wood of the species illustrated. We present new finds of very similar wood collections in the Economic Botany Collection of the Harvard University Herbaria, a private collection in the U.K. (Loudon collection), and at the Koishikawa Botanical Garden of the University of Tokyo. A stamp on the reverse of the boards links all five collections to Chikusai Kato, an artist working at Tokyo University (now the University of Tokyo) in early Meiji Japan, under the direction of the preeminent nineteenth century Japanese botanist Keisuke Ito. New evidence from contemporary historical accounts indicates that more than 100 boards were ordered in June 1878 by Hiroyuki Katō, the first president of Tokyo University, most likely to support the early teaching of Western-influenced botanical science in Japan. However, while the boards had clear value for teaching, especially about useful plants, their unusual fusion of Western and Japanese influences also made them desirable craft objects that were collected and given as gifts during the early Meiji era.  相似文献

The genus Simoedosaurus, whose distinction from Champsosaurus has recently been proven in Europe, exists also in the Clarkforkian of North America: four specimens in the Collection of Princeton University provide the evidence. This genus can be added to the already long list of forms common to the two continents at the beginning of the Eocene, which attests to the ease of migration from one to the other at this time.  相似文献

Skull anatomy and development have been extensively studied due to their significance in evolutionary biology, forensic anthropology, and clinical medicine. Bone collections are an indispensable resource for conducting such anthropological and anatomical studies. However, worldwide there are only few skull collections containing specimens covering the entire fetal and postnatal period. Herein we describe the Zagreb Skull Collection, an identified collection comprising more than 1100 skulls and skull bone sets from the early fetal period to centenarians. The Zagreb Skull Collection consists of two main parts: the unique Collection of Skull Bones containing 386 sets of separated skull bones from the early fetal period to adulthood and the Collection of Skulls containing 742 skulls (age range 4–101 years). The collection was the core source for numerous anatomical studies on the development, postnatal changes, and anatomical variations of the skull. However, the Zagreb Skull Collection is still an underexploited resource for anthropological, forensic, and anatomical studies with translatability to contemporary clinical practice.  相似文献

The aim of this article is to briefly present the Galler Collection, a little-known historic Swiss bone reference series of high value for paleopathological research. The Galler Collection consists of approximately 600 mostly dry-bone specimens of many major bone diseases dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Clinical information and autopsy reports are available for the majority of specimens. Rarely documented conditions represented in the collection include: severe forms of myositis ossificans progressiva, kyphoscoliosis, endemic cretinism, hypo- and hyperparathyroidism, and phosphorus-induced bone necrosis. At present, the Galler Collection is located at the National History Museum in Basel (Augustinergasse 2, 4001 Basel, Switzerland, Telephone: +41612665500, Fax: +41612665546).  相似文献

In three to five percent of active cases of tuberculosis, skeletal lesions develop. Typically, these occur on the vertebrae and are destructive in nature. In this paper, we examined cases of skeletal tuberculosis from a skeletal collection (Galler Collection) with focus on the manifestation of bony changes due to tuberculosis in various body regions in association with antibiotic introduction. This skeletal collection was created in 1925–1977 by a pathologist at the University Hospital in Zürich, Ernst Galler. It includes the remains of 2426 individuals with documented clinical histories as well as autopsies. It contained 29 cases of skeletal tuberculosis lesions. We observed natural healing of vertebral lesions through several processes including fusion of vertebrae, bone deposition and fusion of posterior elements. In these cases, we observed a higher frequency and proportion of bone deposition and fusion of posterior vertebral elements where pharmacological agents were used. There were also four cases of artificial healing through surgically induced posterior spinal fusion. With the introduction of pharmaceutical treatments, the number of individuals with multiple tuberculous foci decreased from 80% to 25% when compared to individuals who did not receive any drug therapy. Investigation of comorbidities showed that pneumonia, pleuritis and being underweight were consistently present, even with pharmaceutical treatment. Our results have applications in palaeopathological diagnoses where healing and consequent bone deposition may complicate differential diagnoses.  相似文献

Ian Humphery-Smith is Professor of Pharmaceutical Proteomics at Utrecht University, The Netherlands, and until recently was a Managing Director and Chief Scientific Officer of Glaucus Proteomics. After a PhD in Parasitology at the University of Queensland, he studied virology and bacteriology in France as a post-doc, before returning to Australia as Course-Coordinator in Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Sydney. During this time, Humphery-Smith took up the posts of Executive Director of Australia's second largest DNA sequencing facility and Director of the Center for Proteomic Research and Gene-Product Mapping, which later became the world's first center to focus on studying the proteome. Humphery-Smith has devoted ten years of research to analyzing proteins in health and disease, and it was his work that originally coined the term ‘proteomics’. He was the first to publish the most complete analysis of an entire proteome in 2000, that of the bacterium Mycoplasma genitalium. He currently serves as a council member of the Human Proteome Organization (HUPO) and has been a prime mover in efforts to have the Human Proteome Project become a formally-ratified international initiative to follow-on from the Human Genome Project.  相似文献

Collection and Use of Wild Edible Fungi in Nepal   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Collection and Use of Wild Edible Fungi in Nepal. The significance of the contribution of wild edible mushrooms to rural livelihoods is acknowledged, but remains largely unexplored. This study investigates the collection of wild edible Nepalese fungi, which species are used, and what are the specific characteristics of the collectors and the collection. Data were collected using 282 structured questionnaires, interviews, and forest walks in 17 districts, environmental household accounts from 413 households in two communities, and a review of literature. A total of 228 species of wild fungi are confirmed to be used for food, and collection is most widespread among the high-mountain Tibeto-Nepalese ethnic groups, which collect an average of 18.1 kilograms (kg) fresh mushrooms per year per household, with some households collecting as much as 160 kg. We found no relation between wealth status and subsistence collection, although the commercial collectors are predominantly the poor earning up to six months of unskilled labor salary per season. Given the limited local trade and occurrence of globally marketed species, the scope for increasing contributions to rural livelihoods from collection of mushrooms, and risks in relation to this are briefly discussed.  相似文献

There are significant gaps in accessible knowledge about the distribution and phenology of Iberian harvestmen (Arachnida: Opiliones). Harvestmen accessible datasets in Iberian Peninsula are unknown, an only two other datasets available in GBIF are composed exclusively of harvestmen records. Moreover, only a few harvestmen data from Iberian Peninsula are available in GBIF network (or in any network that allows public retrieval or use these data). This paper describes the data associated with the Opiliones kept in the BOS Arthropod Collection of the University of Oviedo, Spain (hosted in the Department of Biología de Organismos y Sistemas), filling some of those gaps. The specimens were mainly collected from the northern third of the Iberian Peninsula. The earliest specimen deposited in the collection, dating back to the early 20th century, belongs to the P. Franganillo Collection. The dataset documents the collection of 16,455 specimens, preserved in 3,772 vials. Approximately 38% of the specimens belong to the family Sclerosomatidae, and 26% to Phalangidae; six other families with fewer specimens are also included. Data quality control was incorporated at several steps of digitisation process to facilitate reuse and improve accuracy. The complete dataset is also provided in Darwin Core Archive format, allowing public retrieval, use and combination with other biological, biodiversity of geographical variables datasets.  相似文献
