48 male shift workers in various industries volunteered to document circadian rhythms in sleeping and working, oral temperature, grip strength of both hands, peak expiratory flow and heart rate. All physiological variables were self-measured 4 to 5 times a day for 2 to 4 weeks. Individual time series were analyzed according to several statistical methods (power spectrum, cosinor, chi squares, ANOVA, correlation, etc.) in order to estimate rhythm parameters such as circadian period (tau) and amplitude (A), and to evaluate subgroup differences with regard to tolerance to shift work, age, duration of shift work, speed of rotation and type of industry. The present study confirms for oral temperature and extends to other variables (grip strength of both hands, heart rate) that intolerance to shift work is frequently associated with both internal desynchronization and small circadian amplitude. The internal desynchronization among several circadian rhythms supports the hypothesis that these latter are driven by several oscillators. Many differences were observed between circadian rhythms in right and left hand grip strength: circadian tau in oral temperature was correlated with that in the grip strength of the dominant hand but not with that of the other hand; changes in tau s of the non-dominant hand were age-related but did not correlate with temperature tau; only the circadian A of the non-dominant hand was associated with a desynchronization. Thus, circadian rhythms in oral temperature and dominant hand grip strength may be driven by the same oscillator while that of the non-dominant hand may be governed by a different one. Internal desynchronization between both hand grip rhythms as well as desynchronization of performance rhythms reported by others provide indirect evidence that circadian oscillator(s) may be located in the human cerebral cortex.  相似文献

Summary We have tested the hypothesis that the circadian oscillators in the eyes ofAplysia are coequal driver oscillators for the circadian locomotor rhythm. Three predictions based on this hypothesis were tested. Prediction 1: at a time when the phase difference between the eye rhythms is small, the amplitude of the locomotor rhythm in two eyed animals will be as great or greater than the amplitude in one eyed animals. Prediction 2: the amplitude of the locomotor rhythm of two eyed animals will decline under conditions in which the two eye rhythms become out of phase with each other. Prediction 3: the form of the locomotor rhythm will broaden or become biphasic in two eyed animals when the two eye rhythms become out of phase with each other.None of the predictions was confirmed. One eyedAplysia had higher amplitude locomotor rhythms than two eyedAplysia, even under conditions in which the two eye rhythms were probably not far out of phase with each other. There was no tendency for the amplitude of the locomotor rhythm of two eyed animals to decline under circumstances in which the phase difference between the two eye rhythms changes from less than 4 h to as much as 11.5 h. There was no tendency in two eyed animals for the locomotor rhythm to broaden or become biphasic as the eye rhythms became more out of phase with each other. The results led us to reject the hypothesis that the eyes are co-equal drivers for the locomotor rhythm. The ocular influence on locomotion is more likely to be mediated via mechanisms in the central nervous system that do not faithfully conserve the phase of the eye rhythms. One possibility is that the driver is a third circadian oscillator that interacts with the two eye oscillators.Abbreviations CAP compound action potentials - CC constant conditions - CT circadian time - DO driver oscillator - EO eye oscillator - RSD relative standard deviations (see Methods)  相似文献

Maximum handgrip strength and endurance of fatiguing isometric handgrip muscle contraction at 40% of maximum voluntary contraction of the dominant hand were assessed separately for both right and left hands of 99 right-handed men aged 7-73 years. Subjects below 10 years (n = 6) could not follow up the endurance test methods and were excluded. The relationship of handgrip strength and endurance with age and other physical parameters was also assessed. Maximum grip strength and endurance of fatiguing submaximal contraction of the right hand were significantly greater than that of the left hand for most age groups. Grip strength was positively correlated with age from 7-19 years (r = 0.94 for right and r = 0.89 for left) and was negatively correlated with age from 20-73 years (r = -0.74 right and r = -0.69 left). Grip strength was positively correlated with the weight (r = 0.86 right and r = 0.87 left), height (r = 0.88 right and r = 0.87 left) and body surface area (r = 0.9 for both) of the subjects. Endurance of contraction of both hands did not show any relationship with age, different physical parameters or grip strength of the subjects.  相似文献

Twenty four shift workers (8 from a steel industry and 16 from a Government hospital) participated in the study. The subjects were instructed to self-measure oral temperature, 4 6 times a day for about three weeks. Sleep quantity and quality for each subject were analysed with the help of an appropriate inventory. The data were analysed by cosinor and power spectrum methods. The frequency of circadian rhythm detection was in the order of 48% in senior nurses, 29% in steel plant workers and 14% in junior nurses. These were also complemented by the results of power spectrum analysis. Present results suggest that rhythms of subjective fatigue and subjective drowsiness are governed neither by oral temperature oscillator nor by the sleep/wake cycle oscillator. The results show that shift rotation pattern chiefly modulates the circadian time structure of shift workers. It is also suggested that the phenomenon of circadian rhythm desynchronization in oral temperature appears to be independent of per day total sleep length.  相似文献

The ability of shift workers to estimate timer intervals of short duration was examined. The study included 22 shift workers and 10 diurnally working control subjects. A circadian rhythm in time estimates was documented in control subjects, but it was found to bed disrupted in shift workers. Spectral analysis revealed frequency or circadian component in time estimates to be lower among the shift workers. Furthermore, an interesting relationship was marked between time estimates and oral temperature in 4 control subjects and 6 shift workers in that the time of the closest estimation coincided with the peak time of their body temperature.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to discriminate and categorize isolateral stress-strain characteristics of the musculocutaneous compartment (MCC) using the model of the first dorsal interosseous muscle (FDI) in vivo. In our approach the MCC was progressively isokinetically compressed with a solid vertical bar in 0.25 mm steps, the force and deflection being measured and recorded electronically. The subject maintained a constantly relaxed position. Twenty-two strongly right-handed young males each yielded three data acquisition sequences from each hand. The elastic modulus and the specific energy of deformation were determined both for the total MCC and separately for the skin and muscle moieties. No unilateral pattern of dominance could be interpreted from the analysis of the range of indices. There was a highly variable individual pattern of bilateral dominance with no specific indication or predictability; only one subject yielded a data profile confirming the classical approach to right-hand dominance. As the muscle was relaxed and the integument layers were under minimal cortical influence, we think that the classical theory of primary cortical influence in motor lateralization does not adequately explain our recorded patterns of mechanical response of the MCC under study.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Individual worker ants isolated in an actograph exhibit circadian rhythms of locomotor activity. Entrainment occurs more readily in LD 18:6 h than in LD 12:12 h. The ants are either light-active or dark-active. Phase angle and duration of activity is influenced by photoperiod.  相似文献

The efficacy of a light/darkness intervention designed to promote circadian adaptation to night shift work was tested in this combined field and laboratory study. Six full-time night shift workers (mean age ± SD:37.1 ± 8.1 yrs) were provided an intervention consisting of an intermittent exposure to full-spectrum bright white light (∼2000 lux) in the first 6 h of their 8 h shift, shielding from morning light by tinted lenses (neutral gray density, 15% visual light transmission), and regular sleep/darkness episodes in darkened quarters beginning 2 h after the end of each shift. Five control group workers (41.1 ± 9.9 yrs) were observed in the presence of a regular sleep/darkness schedule only. Constant routines (CR) performed before and after a sequence of ∼12 night shifts over 3 weeks revealed that treatment group workers displayed significant shifts in the time of peak cortisol expression and realignment of the rhythm with the night-oriented schedule. Smaller phase shifts, suggesting an incomplete adaptation to the shift work schedule, were observed in the control group. Our observations support the careful control of the pattern of light and darkness exposure for the adaptation of physiological rhythms to night shift work.  相似文献

The aim of this research was to discriminate and categorize isolateral stress-strain characteristics contained within the musculocutaneous compartment (MCC) using the model of the first dorsal interosseous muscle (FDI) in vivo. In our approach, the musculocutaneous compartment of the dorsal interosseous muscle was progressively isokinetically compressed by a solid vertical bar with a 0.25 mm incremental step. During each step, the force and deflection were measured and recorded electronically. The subject maintained a constantly relaxed position. Twenty-two strongly right-handed young males returned three data acquisition sequences from each hand. From the sequences, the elastic modulus and the specific energy of deformation were determined for both the total musculocutaneous compartment structure and separately for the discrete cutaneous and muscular compartments. No unilateral pattern of dominance was interpreted from the analysis of the range of indices. There was a highly variable individual pattern of bilateral dominance with no specific indication or predictability represented by the data: only one subject illustrated a data profile confirming the classical approach to right-handed dominance. As the muscle was relaxed and the integument layers were under minimal cortical influence, we suggest that the classical theory of primary cortical influence in motor lateralization does not adequately explain our recorded patterns of mechanical response of the musculocutaneous compartment analyzed in this study.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to examine age-related differences in electromyographic (EMG) responses to transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) during functional isometric contractions in left and right hands. EMG responses were recorded from the first dorsal interosseus muscle following TMS in 10 young (26.6 +/- 1.3 yr) and 10 old (67.6 +/- 2.3 yr) right-handed subjects. Muscle evoked potentials (MEPs) and silent-period durations were obtained in the left and right hands during index finger abduction, a precision grip, a power grip, and a scissor grip, while EMG was held constant at 5% of maximum. For all tasks, MEP area was 30% (P < 0.001) lower in the left hand of old compared with young subjects, whereas there was no age difference in the right hand. The duration of the EMG silent period was 14% (P < 0.001) shorter in old (150.3 +/- 2.9 ms) compared with young (173.9 +/- 3.0 ms) subjects, and the age differences were accentuated in the left hand (19% shorter, P < 0.001). For all subjects, the largest MEP area (10-12% larger) and longest EMG silent period (8-19 ms longer) were observed for the scissor grip compared with the other three tasks, and the largest task-dependent change in these variables was observed in the right hand of older adults. These differences in corticospinal control in the left and right hands of older adults may reflect neural adaptations that occur throughout a lifetime of preferential hand use for skilled (dominant) and unskilled (nondominant) motor tasks.  相似文献

Circadian rhythm of histamine in the pineal gland   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The stimulating effects of 2-guanidinbenzimidazole and phentolamine on sodium transport through the isolated skin of the frog Rana esculenta are described. These substances only act when added to the epithelial side, suggesting that they affect the permeability of the external barrier of sodium compartment. The role of the imidazole group in the activation of sodium transport is discussed.  相似文献

Circadian rhythm entrainment in flies and mammals   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Circadian rhythms are a fundamental adaptation of living cells to the daily and seasonal fluctuation in light and temperature. Circadian oscillations persist in constant conditions; however, they are also phase-adjusted (entrained) by day-night cycles. It is this entrainability that provides for the proper phasing of the program, to the sequence of external changes that it has evolved to exploit. Synchronization of circadian oscillators with the outside world is achieved because light, temperature, or other external temporal cues, have acute effects on the levels of one or more of the clock's components. The consequences are ripples through the interconnected molecular loops, leading to a stable phase realignment of the endogenous rhythm generator and the external conditions. This review summarized the evolving knowledge of the different types, modes, and molecular processes of entrainment in flies and mammals.  相似文献

Intolerance to shift work may result from individual susceptibility to an internal desynchronization. Some shift workers (SW) who show desynchronization of their circadian rhythms (e.g., sleep-wake, body temperature, and grip strength of both hands) exhibit symptoms of SW intolerance, such as sleep alteration, persistent fatigue, sleep medication dependence, and mood disturbances, including depression. Existing time series data previously collected from 48 male Caucasian French SW were reanalyzed specifically to test the hypothesis that internal synchronization of circadian rhythms is associated with SW intolerance and symptoms. The entry of the subjects into the study was randomized. Three groups were formed thereafter: SW with good tolerance (n=14); SW with poor tolerance, as evident by medical complaints for at least one year (n=19); and former SW (n=15) with very poor tolerance and who had been discharged from night work for at 1.5 yr span but who were symptom-free at the time of the study. Individual and longitudinal time series of selected variables (self-recorded sleep-wake data using a sleep log, self-measured grip strength of both hands using a Colin Gentile dynamometer, and oral temperature using a clinical thermometer) were gathered for at least 15 days, including during one or two night shifts. Measurements were performed 4-5 times/24 h. Power spectra used to quantify the prominent period (tau) and t-test, chi square, and correlation coefficient were used as statistical tools. The mean (+/-SEM) age of SW with good tolerance was greater than that of SW with poor tolerance (44.9+/-2.1 yrs vs. 40.1+/-2.6 yrs, p<.001) and of former SW discharged from night work (very poor tolerance; 33.4+/-1.7, p<.001). The shift-work duration (yrs) was longer in SW with good than poor tolerance (19.9+/-2.2 yrs vs. 15.7+/-2.2; p<0.002) and former SW (10.7+/-1.2; p<.0001). The correlation between subject age and shift-work duration was stronger in tolerant SW (r=0.97, p<.0001) than in non-tolerant SW (r=0.80, p<0.001) and greater than that of former SW (r=0.72, p<.01). The mean sleep-wake rhythm tau was 24 h for all 48 subjects. The number of desynchronized circadian rhythms (tau differing from 24 h) was greater in non-tolerant than in tolerant SW (chi square=38.9, p<.0001). In Former SW (i.e., 15 individuals assessed in follow-up studies done 1.5 to 20 yrs after return to day work), both symptoms of intolerance and internal desynchronization were reduced or absent. The results suggest that non-tolerant SW are particularly sensitive to the internal desynchronization of their circadian time organization.  相似文献

Internal desynchronization of circadian rhythms and tolerance of shift work   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Fifteen male subjects including 12 shift workers (oil refinery operators) volunteered to document circadian rhythms in sleep-wake, grip strength of both hands, peak expiratory flow, heart rate, self-rated drowsiness, fatigue and attention. Each of these variables was measured 4 to 6 times/day for 2 to 3 weeks. In addition, both axillary temperature (with a shielded probe) and wrist activity were almost continuously recorded at 15 min intervals during the same time span. Individual time series were analyzed according to several statistical methods (power spectrum, cosinor, chi 2, etc.), in order to estimate the prominent circadian period tau and to evaluate both individual and subgroup differences with regard to tolerance of shift work, age, duration of shift work. The present study confirms for continuously recorded temperature and wrist activity, grip strength of both hands, heart rate and peak expiratory flow that intolerance of shift work is frequently associated with an internal desynchronization. However, this conclusion cannot be extended to circadian rhythms in self-rated drowsiness, fatigue and attention. The internal desynchronization among several circadian rhythms supports the hypothesis that these latter are driven by several oscillators, with presumable differences between right and left hemispheres as suggested by unequal values of tau in rhythms of both hand grip strength. Since an internal desynchronization can be observed in tolerant shift workers having no complaint, it is likely that symptoms of intolerance are related to the subject's sensitivity to internal desynchronization rather than to the desynchronization itself.  相似文献

We investigated how differences in circadian rhythm type affect the health of workers engaged in shift work. Employees, who were newly hired in a steel company between 2007 and 2011, received the Morningness–Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) survey. The target participants were 153 male shift workers who were not being treated with any antihyperlipidemic drugs and underwent periodic physical examinations including blood tests at least twice. According to the score of the MEQ at the time of joining the company, we classified the subjects into five types. Longitudinal changes in serum lipid level were estimated among the circadian rhythm types adjusted for age, BMI, and other covariates using a linear mixed model. The regression coefficient of total cholesterol level in the “definitely and moderately morning” group was ?17.83 (95% confidence interval (CI): ?33.42 to ?2.23), and in the “intermediate ‘group’ was ?16.84 [95% CI: ?30.40 to ?3.28], compared to the moderate evening type.” The total cholesterol level was higher in the moderately evening type than in any of the other groups. Between the Morningness–Eveningness (ME) type and Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels, compared with the “moderately evening type” group, the regression coefficient in the “intermediate type” group was ?16.08 (95% CI: ?28.79 to ?3.37), and in the “definitely and moderately morning type” group was ?17.50 [95% CI: ?32.11 to ?2.88]. The “moderately evening type” group had a higher LDL cholesterol level than any of the other groups. Evening-type circadian rhythm type shift workers are more prone to elevated serum lipid levels.  相似文献
