The feeding dynamics of the glacier lanternfish Benthosema glaciale were studied during the summer of 2010 in the Flemish Cap. B. glaciale constituted a majority of the deep scattering layer (DSL), which was located between 300 and 650 m during daylight hours; at night, a part of the DSL migrated to the surface. B. glaciale is a zooplanktivore, feeding primarily on copepods (Calanus hyperboreus, Pareuchaeta norvegica, Metridia longa and Calanus finmarchicus), followed by amphipods (Themisto compressa) and krill (primarily Nematoscelis spp.). Although crustaceans dominated the diet, other invertebrates, such as chaetognaths, gastropods, polychaetes, ostracods and appendicularians, also contributed. The geographical differences in the composition of the diet resulted from the association of prey with distinct water masses. In the colder water at the north of the bank, Arctic species represented a higher proportion of the diet, but this situation was reversed in areas influenced by the warmer water from the south. B. glaciale fed more intensively towards the centre of the Flemish Cap. The diet of B. glaciale shifted ontogenetically, showing increasing prey size and prey diversity with increasing predator size.  相似文献

Juvenile and adult specimens of Benthosema pterotum (skinnycheek lanternfish) were collected during several surveys conducted on the Iranian continental shelf of the Oman Sea. Age was estimated by enumeration of growth increments in sagittae otolith sections on the assumption of their daily deposition. Three distinct growth zones in otolith microstructure (central, middle, and external) were defined. These three zones presumably represent increments deposited during successive life history stages, characterized by a different migratory behavior and depth occurrence. The number of increments in the central zone of the B. pterotum otolith (26.8 on average) was thus far one of the lowest in myctophid species studied. A negative correlation between the number of increments in the central and middle zones was observed. This might suggest a functional relation between these two periods of early life history, when fewer larvae in the epipelagic layers may be compensated by a longer non‐migratory behavior of metamorphosis larvae and early juveniles. The maximum number of growth increments in B. pterotum otoliths, i.e. 315, indicated a short lifespan of probably <1 year. The relationship between otolith length and standard length was described by linear regression model (r2 = 0.902), and between the body length and weight as an isometric growth in 274 juvenile and adult specimens (r2 = 0.922). The growth model estimated only for juveniles and adults was curvilinear (SL = 1.150 × Age0.616; r² = 0.868). Back‐calculated hatch dates might suggest a spawning season of B. pterotum from May to September, but due to the limited number of investigated specimens a prolonged spawning cannot be excluded. Further trials are needed to measure the population parameter dynamics.  相似文献

Dermatonotus muelleri is a forelimbs-head-first burrowing frog that uses its forelimbs for soil removal, and it is the second anuran species known to arch its head downwards at an angle of almost 90° to the longitudinal axis of its body when burrowing. The burrowing behavior of D. muelleri is divided in three stages: head burrowing, body burrowing, and chamber construction. Burrowing in D. muelleri includes construction of a subterranean chamber used for estivation during the dry season. Phylogenetic analysis based on literature survey of burrowing behavior suggested that head-first burrowing behavior has evolved several times in anuran history, forming a convergence complex, and that hindlimbs-first burrowing is a basal behavior.  相似文献

Fish are ectothermic animals and have body temperatures close to that of the water they inhabit. They can still control their body temperatures by selecting habitats with temperatures that maximize their growth, feed conversion and wellbeing. Lumpfish, Cyclopterus lumpus, is widely distributed in the North Atlantic Ocean and therefore exposed to variable water temperatures. Lumpfish is extensively used as cleanerfish in salmon farming in Norway and exposed to a wide temperature range along the north-south axis of the Norwegian coastline. But, if these temperature ranges correspond to the preference temperatures of lumpfish is not known. If lumpfish has adapted to regional temperatures along the Norwegian coast, differences in preference temperature for fish from different regions should be evident. In a selective breeding perspective, different selection lines for preference temperature would then be useful for further development of lumpfish as a cleanerfish.We subjected lumpfish juveniles weighing 154–426g originated from northern (Group North – GN) and southern (Group South – GS) Norway to a temperature preference test, using an electronic shuttle box system. The system allowed the fish to control the water temperature by moving between two chambers, and thereby choosing its preferred temperature in the range from 5 to 16 °C. We started the temperature at 7.8 ± 1.37 °C for GN and 7.58 ± 1.34 °C for GS, but all the fish except four (two each from GN and GS) chose lower temperatures (5.03–7.6 °C) in the first 18 h and stayed closer to that temperature during the next 30 h. Based on the results, GN and GS lumpfish preferred 6.92 ± 1.8 and 6.2 ± 1.2, respectively, and there was no significant difference between the groups. Neither was there any significant difference in growth rates (SGR) between the two groups. Based on our results, we suggest that lumpfish from any geographical origin along the Norwegian coast can be used anywhere in Norway. It follows that lumpfish from a single selection line could be used at any salmon farm in Norway independent of its location.  相似文献

Fossil plants from the Upper Devonian (Frasnian) of northern Timan are studied. The sporangia contain well-preserved spores, which were studied in transmitted light using a scanning electron microscope. The genus Gutzeitia S. Snigirevsky, gen. nov. is established. Macroremains and in situ spores of G. timanica (Petros.) S. Snig., comb. nov. and ?Cephalopteris mirabilis (Nath.) Nath. are described. Microspores in Dimeripteris gracilis Schmalh. are identified, and microspores and megaspores in ?Cephalopteris mirabilis are studied for the first time.  相似文献

Dipeptidyl peptidase 9 (DPP9) is a peptidase of the DPPIV gene family, and its role in immune responses has been reported. In this study, we compared the messenger RNA expression profile of DPP9 to that of the related DPP8 and DPPIV in murine haematopoietic and lymphatic tissues. A similar order of expression levels was observed for all 3 peptidases: peritoneal macrophages < bone marrow < spleen ≤ lymph nodes. Also, we examined the subcellular localisation of DPP9 and its possible role(s) in J774 cell line of macrophage origin. DPP9 was dominantly expressed intracellularly. DPPIV‐like enzymatic activity was mostly present in cytoplasm, but also in cell membranes and organelles/vesicles. Decreased expression of DPP9 was observed upon activation of J774 cells by combined treatment with interferon gamma and lipopolysaccharide. Changes induced by DPP9 gene silencing in J774 cells suggest possible role of DPP9 in regulation of proliferation and activation status. The colocalisation of DPP9 with endocytosed DQ‐OVA demonstrated in endosomes of J774 cells might suggest the role of DPP9 in peptide processing within endosomal/vesicular compartment.  相似文献

Permineralised wood of Eristophyton sp. is first described from the Carboniferous deposits of the Arkhangelsk region, northern Russia. The specimens used in the study show scalariform thickening of the metaxylem tracheids both on radial and tangential walls. Eristophyton sp. indicates well preserved elements of secondary xylem: uni-, rarely biseriate xylem rays up to 15–16 cells high; uni-, multiseriate tracheid pitting only on radial walls; 1–8 contiguous cross-field pits and their inclined narrow apertures. A brief review and comparison with known anatomically preserved plants from the Lower Carboniferous of different localities of Scotland, France, USA and Poland is discussed.  相似文献

ACBPs are implicated in acyl-CoA trafficking in many eukaryotes and some prokaryotes. Six genes encode proteins designated as AtACBP1-AtACBP6 in the Arabidopsis thaliana ACBP family. These ACBPs are conserved in the acyl-CoA-binding domain, but vary in size from 92 amino acids (10.4 kDa) to 668 amino acids (73.1 kDa), and are subcellularly localised to different compartments in plant cells. Results from in vitro binding assays show that their corresponding recombinant proteins exhibit differential binding affinities to acyl-CoA esters and phospholipids, implying that these ACBPs may have non-redundant biological functions in vivo. By using knockout/downregulated and overexpression lines of Arabidopsis ACBPs, recent investigations have revealed that in addition to their proposed roles in phospholipid metabolism, these ACBPs can influence plant development including early embryogenesis and leaf senescence, as well as plant stress responses including heavy metal resistance, oxidative stress, freezing tolerance and pathogen resistance. In this review, recent progress on the biochemical and functional analyses of Arabidopsis ACBPs, their links to metabolic/signalling pathways, and their potential applications in development of stress tolerance are discussed.  相似文献

The primitive center of origin of Citrus species has been a subject of speculation and discussion for some time. Japanese Citrus taxonomist Tanaka concluded that the center of origin was northeastern India and northern Burma. He ascribed a secondary role in the origin and distribution of Citrus species to Yunnan and surrounding areas of China on the basis of his belief that there were no important native species. These conclusions were based on incomplete information that was available over 30 yr ago, but important new evidence from Yunnan challenges Tanaka’s ideas on the origin of Citrus species. This report describes the diversity of indigenous primitive and advanced Citrus species in Yunnan and the interaction of topography and climate with the geographic distribution of these species. Numerous river systems arise in or traverse Yunnan and flow to Burma, Indo-China, and southern and central China, thus providing a natural plant dispersal mechanism. The authors suggest that the substantial portion of the Citrus gene pool represented in the rich diversity of indigenous species reported in recent Chinese surveys and the available natural dispersal mechanism provide strong evidence that Yunnan and nearby areas of China played a critical role in the origin and distribution of modern Citrus species.  相似文献

The occurrence of hexaploid (2n = 6x = 42) forms in some otherwise natural tetraploid populations of Agropyron dasystachyum (2n = 4x = 28) was cytologically detected and studied. The hexaploid plants are morphologically similar to the tetraploids except for a small reduction in the anther size. The general survey of chromosome numbers of natural Northern Wheatgrass (A. dasystachyum 2n = 4x = 28) populations derived from eight different regions of Alberta indicated that the occurrence of hexaploid variants was not restricted to a single locality. A comparative study of chromosome pairing in the natural and the synthetic hexaploids revealed that the naturally occurring 42-chromosomed plants of A. dasystachyum originated as a result of fertilization between unreduced (SSHH) and the natural (SH) gametes, both coming from the tetraploid form of A. dasystachyum. Based on chromosome pairing, the genomes of the natural hexaploid A. dasystachyum have been designated as SSSHHH. The natural hexaploids appear to intercross among themselves and also with tetraploids producing euploid and aneuploid hybrids. The possible evolutionary significance of these findings is briefly discussed.  相似文献

To determine whether gibbons discriminate among songs given by different groups, I conducted a series of experimental playbacks of recorded Bornean gibbon (Hylobates muelleri)duets. The gibbons did not respond differentially to their own, neighbors’, and strangers’ songs. Failure to show vocal discrimination may be due to factors associated with the experimental procedure or may indicate that there is no selective advantage gained by responding differentially under the playback circumstances.  相似文献

Among other characteristics a trimeric coelomic compartmentation consisting of an anterior protocoel, followed by a mesocoel and a posterior metacoel is traditionally believed to substantiate the sister-group relationship between Lophophorata and Deuterostomia, together forming the Radialia. As molecular data cannot support this hypothesis a reanalysis of the coelomic cavities in Phoronida is undertaken, because corresponding coelomic compartmentation is widely accepted to support the Radialia hypothesis. A coelomic cavity can be recognized on the ultrastructural level because its lining is a true epithelium with polarized cells interconnected by apical adherens junctions. This study reveals that neither in larval nor adult Phoronis muelleri (Phoronida) an anterior cavity with such a lining is present. What on the light microscopic level leads to the impression of a cavity inside the larval episphere, actually is an enlarged subepidermal extracellular matrix with an amorphous, presumably gel-like filling, into which several muscle cells are embedded. Larvae, thus, possess only one coelomic cavity, the large trunk coelom of the larva which is adopted in the adult organization. The second coelomic cavity of adult P. muelleri, the lophophore coelom, develops as a double-layer of epithelialized mesodermal cells at the base of the adult tentacle buds and becomes fluid filled during metamorphosis. Like the larval episphere, larval tentacles and most parts of the blastocoel are filled by an amorphous matrix. Reanalysis of the literature and comparison with Brachiopoda and Bryozoa allows the hypothesis that a protocoel is lacking in all Lophophorata, and that merely two unpaired coelomic cavities, one tentacle and one trunk coelom, can be assumed for the ground pattern of this taxon. Crepidostomum wikgreni n. sp. is described from the gall-bladder and intestine of the whitefish Coregonus acronius in Lake Yli-Kitka in NE Finland. It is morphologically similar to Crepidostomum farionis, with which it occurs sympatrically and sometimes concurrently; but it differs in that the eggs are much larger, i.e. 96±6.5 m mean-length, as opposed to 71±4.7 m mean-length for C. farionis in the same host and locality.It is suggested that the new species has arisen from C. farionis after deglaciation and since c. 8,400 BP, at which time the waters of the Lake Kitka System were isolated from those in the rest of Finland and flowed eastwards into the White Sea Basin. The isolation of the White Sea Basin appears to have been maintained by watersheds running north-south close to the Fenno-Soviet border and east-west through central Karelia. It is further suggested that C. farionis currently occurring in Lake Yli-Kitka is a recent re-introduction brought about by the translocation of fish-stocks.  相似文献
