Walls are often considered secondary habitats for vegetation of natural rock surfaces. Compared with rocks, walls differ in many features, for example the presence of a binding material (mainly calcareous mortar), location in settlements and exposure to human impact. A data set of 1,205 phytosociological relevés recorded on horizontal wall tops, wall verticals and rock verticals in the Czech Republic was used to compare their vegetation with regard to i) species composition (frequent species, species diversity, endangered and alien species) and ii) the ecological requirements of the respective species. Gamma diversity of vascular plant species was comparable in all habitat types (242 species on wall tops, 212 species on wall verticals and 197 species on rock verticals). Wall verticals had higher beta diversity, but lower alpha diversity than rocks. Remarkable differences were found comparing the diversity of alien species. Whereas alpha and gamma diversities of aliens were higher on both wall habitats, beta diversity of aliens was the highest on rocks. The high floristic heterogeneity of walls is mainly attributable to the large pool of species from the surrounding urbanized landscape (e.g., cultivated ornamental species and synanthropic weeds) that are favoured by high nutrient inputs. In contrast, species characteristic of rocks are mainly substrate specialists. Walls and rocks share the frequent occurrence of ferns, grasses and herbs typical of forest understorey and clearings. Compared with rocks, walls are generally colonized by species requiring higher nutrient content, soil reaction, temperature and moisture. Secondary wall habitats might be suitable for some rare and endangered species, but contrary to rocks their occurrences are only accidental and temporary. The representation of aliens was considerably higher on walls (approximately 35%) than on rocks (9%).  相似文献

Forest patches with high biological value are protected as woodland key habitats (WKH), which are identified by the presence of forest structures and indicator species. However, management for conservation needs to consider also managed forests as habitats for species. In this respect, there is a need to set quantitative targets for species and structures at different landscape scales. Due to non-intensive methods of forest management used prior to 1940 in Latvia, it might be expected that large areas of forest have developed structures that can support many species characteristic of natural forests. The aim of the study was to create a model that best described the richness of bryophyte species that are characteristic of natural forests, using forest structures as explanatory factors. The structures and bryophyte communities on living trees and coarse woody debris (CWD) were described in plots along transects blindly placed in areas dominated by State forests under commercial management. Explanatory variables related to tree species composition and tree size explained 54% of the variation in WKH indicator species richness on living trees. The best explanatory factors were maximum diameter of deciduous tree species and CWD. Low richness of total bryophyte and indicator species was found on dead wood, and the amount of variation in bryophyte species richness on CWD explained by explanatory variables was low. The study indicates the importance of deciduous tree substrate in managed forests in maintaining the spatial continuity of epiphytic species diversity. However, the forests in the managed forest landscape did not support high diversity of epixylic species, even in the WKHs, due to low diversity of suitable dead wood substrate.  相似文献

Environmental and spatial variables can distinctly influence the occupancy frequency distributions in stream fish. From a metacommunity context, we tested the following hypothesis, intermediate species are governed by dispersal and niche-based processes; in contrast, satellite species are governed by niche-based processes. To test this, we separately analyzed three data sets, the entire metacommunity, the intermediate species and the satellite species, using a forward selection of explanatory variables, and a partial Redundancy Distance Analysis. The fish and 31 variables of 52 stream reaches of a Brazilian river basin in the Western Amazon were collected during the dry period of 2012. The results for all of the data set revealed two different patterns: on one side, satellite species revealed that niche and dispersal-based processes were the most important; on the other side, for intermediate species and for all of the species set, only dispersal-based processes were the most important. For the data set including all of the species and the intermediate species, the variance was explained mainly by landscape scale variables. By contrast, the variance within the satellite species set was explained by local scale variables. Management efforts for intermediate species should be taking at larger scale, but they are usually less critical for the maintenance of aquatic biodiversity; on the other hand, management efforts for satellite species should be taken at smaller scale and based on specific biological and ecological information for the focal species.  相似文献

Species and sex biases in ectoparasitism of dragonflies by mites   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
An important problem in understanding the evolution of parasite host range is determining the extent to which parasite fitness varies among host species and the factors affecting that fitness variation. We present a detailed investigation on the patterns of host use and successful parasitism of two dragonfly species by the ectoparasitic water mite, Limnochares americana Lundblad. In our field surveys, we found both species biases and sex biases in parasitism by mites, which appear explained by differences in exposure. Differential habitat use by dragonflies helped explain male biases in parasitism in both host species, but was not useful in explaining species biases in parasitism. Species biases in parasitism may be explained by more subtle variation in habitat use not explored in this study, or perhaps by differences in timing of emergence, as we found for the two dragonfly species. Despite species differences in parasitism in nature, we found that mites attached equally successfully to both dragonfly species during experimental infestations. However, mites failed to engorge more often on the dragonfly species less often used as a host in nature. This host species also was more likely to have dead mites in natural infestations as compared to the other host species, which was more often and more heavily parasitized. Our results are consistent with previous research suggesting parasites are less successful on less often used hosts. Such research has implications for understanding determinants of host range for animal parasites.  相似文献

Mangrove bird communities in north Australia comprise relatively few passerine species compared with other arboreal habitats in the region. Mangroves are dominated by a few tree species and there are potentially few resource axes available for partitioning by terrestrial birds. Competition for limited resources is predicted to cause strong niche differentiation and a highly structured, but low diversity, bird assemblage. Using multivariate and bipartite network analyses based on 1771 foraging observations (33% of 5320 behavioral observations), we examined resource partitioning by 20 terrestrial bird species in mangroves of north Australia. The mangrove bird community largely comprised generalist insectivores that partitioned insects by size with moderate‐to‐high interspecific overlap in diet. Gleaning for insects was the most common foraging mode. Few species specialized on nectar. Flowers of one or more mangrove species were available in every month of the year and insect abundance was correlated with flowering peaks. Niche differentiation by birds was determined by food type and foraging mode more than by broad spatial (mangrove zones) or temporal (seasonal) segregation of the use of resources. There was little evidence of bird species saturation or species sorting, suggesting loose species packing and a lesser role than expected for species interactions and interference competition in structuring the bird assemblage in mangroves.  相似文献

Marine reserves that prohibit fishing often result in greater densities of individuals and more species than adjacent fished areas. However, simple conclusions about their effects on species richness are confounded, because more species are expected to occur wherever there are more individuals. Here, there is an important distinction between the number of species per sampling unit (species density), and species richness measured as the number of species per given number of individuals. When conservation of species richness is an important goal, analyses need to discriminate between the alternative explanations for differences in the number of species. We used rarefaction to test whether species richness was higher in two ‘no-take’ marine reserves after controlling for differences in the density of individuals. We surveyed each reserve in three different years. There was a higher density of individuals and species in each reserve than in adjacent fished areas. However, rarefaction analyses indicated that effects on species richness were weak after controlling for the number of individuals: slightly higher species richness was recorded inside each reserve in one of three surveys, but the difference was small, and was apparent only when the maximum number of individuals was approached. Our results therefore indicate that patterns in species density were not reflected by patterns in species richness—the application of rarefaction methods is needed to determine the responses of species richness to protection elsewhere. The distinction between species density and species richness will not be important in all situations, but when it is important, inferences about species richness cannot be reliably deduced from measurements of species density.  相似文献

Choice of microhabitats by coral reef fishes at settlement   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
A set of small lagoonal patch reefs was searched every 1 to 3 days during the peak recruitment seasons of three summers and newly settled juvenile fishes were located. The majority of species remain rather sedentary during the first few days in the demersal environment, and we assumed that the site occupied was the site chosen at settlement. A series of characteristics of the occupied site were recorded, including percent cover of different types of substratum, and attributes related to the site's position on the patch reef. A set of null sites was randomly located on the same reefs for comparison with those selected by the fish. Sites chosen by individuals of eight common species were compared with these null sites, and sites chosen by fourteen species (including the eight) were compared with each other. Multiple discriminant analysis was used to assess the degree to which each species selected a unique type of site, and, for the eight species, the degree to which sites chosen by fish could be discriminated from randomly selected sites on the same patch reefs. Chosen sites were readily discriminated from null sites in seven of eight species, however the procedure was poor at discriminating among sites chosen by different species, and 8 pairs of species among the 14 chose sites which on average did not differ in the attributes measured. Attributes most important in discriminating sites chosen by each species are considered. Overall, the results indicate that while juvenile fish do not settle indiscriminantly onto lagoonal patch reefs, sites chosen by different species are often not very different from one another.  相似文献

Variation in the spatial structure of communities in terms of species composition (beta diversity) is affected by different ecological processes, such as environmental filtering and dispersal limitation. Large rivers are known as barriers for species dispersal (riverine hypothesis) in tropical regions. However, when organisms are not dispersal limited by geographic barriers, other factors, such as climatic conditions and geographic distance per se, may affect species distribution. In order to investigate the relative contribution of major rivers, climate and geographic distance on Passeriformes beta diversity, we divided Amazonia into 549 grid cells (1° of latitude and longitude) and obtained data of species occurrence, climate and geographic position for each cell. Beta diversity was measured using taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional metrics of composition. The influence of climatic variables, geographic distance and rivers on these metrics was tested using regression analyses. Passerine beta diversity is characterized mainly by the change in species taxonomic identity and in phylogenetic lineages across climatic gradients and over geographic distance. However, species with similar traits are found throughout the entire Amazonia. The size of rivers was proportional to their effect on species composition. However, climate and geographic distance are relatively more important than rivers for Amazonian taxonomic and phylogenetic species composition.  相似文献

Summary Feeding choice of the echinoid Evechinus chloroticus was examined for six fucoid and one laminarian species of algae. Three experiments were conducted to determine the algal choice by echinoids under controlled conditions. In the first experiment, the seven algal species were presented to echinoids in laboratory conditions. The second experiment had replicates of the algal species placed randomly on a subtidal rocky reef where echinoids were abundant and randomly dispersed. For the third experiment, which was also field-based, replicates of one highly-ranked species, Ecklonia radiata, were presented to naturally dispersed Evechinus. In addition, a series of controlled observations was used to examine the order in which echinoids removed algae from mixed species stands on subtidal boulders and to determine if this was related to the experimentally demonstrated choices of algal species. The results of the first two experiments showed that there were differences between algal species in the amount of material grazed by echinoids. Rankings of algal species from the field experiment were not correlated with rankings from the laboratory experiment. The order of removal of algal species from natural stands was correlated with the laboratory-based experimental rankings of algal species, but not with the rankings from the field-based experiment or with algal species availability. There were differences between algal species in their vulnerability to grazing by echinoids, as measured by regression analyses on the amount of material grazed from algal replicates vs. the number of attached echinoids. Within each species, echinoid numbers exerted a non-linear effect on the removal of algal material. In the third experiment, where only one species of algae was presented, the echinoids still distributed themselves non-randomly amongst replicates, aggregating on some samples.Data on the finer scale distribution of algal species over the entire subtidal reef on which these experiments and observations were conducted indicate that Evechinus are not often presented with a choice of adult plants of several different species in natural stands. The evidence from this study supports the conclusion that feeding preferences by echinoids are labile and do not clearly exert the major influence on the removal of plants from natural stands. Preference, as determined from experimental rankings of algal species, is only one of a number of factors which may affect the removal of algae by echinoids. Other important factors are the density of echinoids present, algal susceptibility to removal, and the distribution and abundances of the various algal species and echinoids relative to each other. It is suggested that algal life history characteristics may be unaffected by echinoids and that coevolutionary arguments are not appropriate for describing echinoid-algal interactions.  相似文献

Phenological stages of natural species and their use as climate indicators   总被引:7,自引:0,他引:7
The objectives of this paper are to: (1) present 10 years of phenological data for nine natural species growing in a Mediterranean-type climate, (2) present threshold temperatures that were derived for the computation of cumulative degree-days (CDD), and (3) evaluate the sensitivity of the nine natural species to weather variability. The study was conducted at the Phenological Research Garden of Oristano, Sardinia, Italy, during the period 1986–96. The observations were made on five typical Mediterranean species and four species that are typical of higher latitudes. The mean annual pattern of phenological events and the CDD from 1 January are given for each development stage. Temperature thresholds were evaluated by comparing the standard deviation about the mean number of days in the development period for each species. A good relationship between timing of phenophase occurrence and temperature was observed for the Mediterranean species, which were little affected by variations in rainfall. Phenological development of the non-native species was affected by springtime rainfall. Accepted: 28 October 1998  相似文献

The effects of smoke, heat, darkness and cold stratification on seed germination were examined for 40 species with various life history attributes. These species establish in early successional stages on a volcano and are distributed in cool temperate zones of northern Japan. Smoke decreased seed germination in 11 species and increased it in one species, Leucothoe grayana . Germination of Polygonum longisetum was enhanced by a combination of smoke and cold, and that of Aralia elata by smoke and heat. Heat increased germination for three species and decreased it for one. Cold stratification broke dormancy in seeds of 11 species. Continuous darkness decreased germination of 22 species and did not increase germination for any species, showing that approximately half of the species require light for maximum germination. Although most species are sun plants that establish in early stages of succession and/or in disturbed areas, smoke and heat do not enhance germination of these species after disturbance, even when the disturbance is fire. Germination of slender and/or large seeds tends to be decreased more by smoke, probably because of their larger surface area. Light is more important than smoke and heat for detection of disturbance and for seed germination in this region. However, despite the low fire frequency in the region, germination of a few species was increased by fire-derived stimuli.  相似文献

Summary Although many native species are now used in the revegetation of soil disturbances in Australian alpine areas, exotic species were, until recently, the only components of seed mixes. The use of exotic species and fertilizer was justified by their availability and low cost, and the prediction that native species would replace the exotic sward, presumably once soil nutrient levels dropped to those found in native vegetation. There was no apparent regard for the invasive capacities of the exotic species used. An investigation of a road verge on the Bogong High Plains, revegetated with a mixture of exotic species in the late 1950s, has shown that colonization by native plants can be very slow. Although many native species had colonized by 1993, exotic species still provided 50% of the cover. Agrostis capillaris accounted for most of this. The major native colonizers were Carex spp., Colobanthus affinis , Euchiton spp., Leptinella filicula , Poa hiemata , Ranunculus victoriensis and Scleranthus biflorus . Poa hiemata provided by far the most cover of the native colonizers. There have been considerable increases in the cover and number of native species on the verge since 1989. Cattle grazing and trampling are likely to have limited colonization of native plants prior to the removal of livestock in 1991. Recommendations are made on approaches to future revegetation in the alpine area.  相似文献

Current occurrence patterns of species associated with ancient trees may reflect higher historical habitat densities, because the dynamics of the habitat and the colonisation-extinction processes for many inhabiting species are expected to be slow. We tested this hypothesis in southeast Sweden by analysing species occurrence per parish for twelve redlisted lichen species and nine redlisted fungus species in relation with current density of big oaks, the density of oaks in the 1830s and connectivity with parishes with the species present. For most species, the occurrence was positively related with current density of habitat (for 18 species out of 21) and parish area (for 16 species). Historical habitat density was positively related with occurrence for 11 species, while connectivity with current occurrences in the surroundings was positive for the occurrence of 12 species and negative for the occurrence of two. For lichen species the connectivity measure that best explained the variation was at a larger spatial scale as compared to fungus species. Even if the density of old oaks remains in the future, inhabiting species will most likely decline because their distribution patterns are not in equilibrium with the current habitat density. Therefore, to allow long-term persistence of inhabiting species the number of old oaks should be increased. Areas where such an increase is most urgent could be identified based on species occurrence data and current habitat density, but because species data will always be incomplete data on the historical habitat distribution is valuable.  相似文献

Plant–herbivore–parasitoid interactions are a common occurrence in terrestrial food webs. Few parasitoids are thought to be shared by host insects of different feeding guilds because different parasitism strategies are required to use hosts of different feeding types. However, this assumption has rarely been tested using data from nature. To clarify whether parasitoids are shared among host guilds, I examined the structure of parasitoid communities on herbivore guilds associated with two Rhododendron species (Ericaceae) in a temperate secondary forest in central Japan. Leaf- and flower-feeding insects were collected from Rhododendron reticulatum and Rhododendron macrosepalum shrubs and reared in the laboratory for 3 years from April 1999 to March 2002. In total, 79 species of holometabolous herbivores (Lepidoptera, Diptera, Coleoptera, and Hymenoptera) were recorded, with 62 species on R. reticulatum and 51 species on R. macrosepalum. A total of 81 parasitoid species (Hymenoptera and Diptera) was recorded from the sampled herbivores, with 48 species from those on R. reticulatum and 50 species from those on R. macrosepalum. In total, 36 herbivore species were parasitised by 1–18 parasitoid species per host species, although the number of parasitoid species was strongly affected by sample size. Parasitoids that had two or more host species frequently attacked herbivore species from different families or on different host plants, whereas they did not attack species from different herbivore guilds; no parasitoids were shared between external feeders and rollers. Therefore, my results support the hypothesis that few parasitoids are shared among herbivores of different feeding guilds.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to explore the determinants of vascular plant species richness for temporary, isolated wetland habitats which are influenced by hydrologic gradients and characterized by variation in habitat area. The dependent variables total plant species richness and the number of obligate wetland species were analyzed consecutively. In regression analyses habitat area explained between 11 and 15% of the variation in the dependent variables. Habitat area was correlated with the heterogeneity of the hydroperiods between the upper and lower parts of the hydrologic gradients. In multivariate regression analyses, habitat heterogeneity accounted for 70-77% of the variation in the dependent variables, and habitat area did not have a significant impact. The results are most consistent with the habitat heterogeneity hypothesis. I therefore concluded that area is a surrogate variable for habitat heterogeneity which directly enhances vascular plant species diversity. There was no significant impact of isolation on species richness. The data suggest that the expanses of agricultural fields are not an effective barrier to the dispersal of the studied plant species. Only 10 of,52 wetland species were negatively influenced by isolation. This group of species did not differ from the other wetland species with respect to dispersal strategies and longevity of seed banks. However, the longevity of the seed banks was generally high, and there was a dominance of species whose propagules are transported with the soil clinging to the feet of birds. The results are discussed in the context of accurate dispersal strategies and remnant populations, which may counteract the effects of isolation.  相似文献

The lemurs of Madagascar are known for their extraordinary species diversity. The mechanisms that allow the coexistence of these species are still poorly known. Here feeding patterns were investigated for three small nocturnal lemur species of Cheirogaleidae ( Microcebus murinus , Cheirogaleus medius and Cheirogaleus major ) occurring sympatrically in a littoral rainforest in south-east Madagascar. During three rainy seasons, the plant species eaten by these three lemurs were described in relation to morphological and biochemical characteristics. All three species were mainly frugivorous and fed on 68 different plant species with small- and medium-sized fruits. A total of 91% of these forage plant species was visited by all three lemur species. Fruits larger than 25–30 mm were avoided. Seeds of a total of 51 food plant species were swallowed and passed the gut unharmed. Thus, even these smaller lemur species play an important role in seed dispersal. There were no differences in the morphological and biochemical characteristics of fruits eaten between the three species, but the feeding height was significantly different between the species. Thus, competition avoidance and niche separation are presumably not based on different feeding patterns of M. murinus , C. medius and C. major in the littoral rainforest, but on different habitat utilization.  相似文献

Based on a biochemical-genetic approach, heterozygosity and divergence of structural genes of 30 enzyme loci were analyzed in six dace species. In addition, intra- and interspecific divergence of gene expression was analyzed based on a sample of 12 to 15 loci. Mean heterozygosities per individual varied as follows: Tribolodon species, Hobs = 0.007 +/- 0.007 and Hexp = 0.007 +/- 0.007; T. ezoe, Hobs = 0.045 +/- 0.016 and Hexp = 0.067 +/- 0.029. Several variants of genetic distances were estimated. Standard Nei's distances (DN) varied from 0.145 to 0.284 in four dace species studied. As related to Tribolodon dace species, the following genetic distances were obtained for two members of other genera: Pseudaspius leptocephalus, DN = 0.269; Leuciscus waleckii, DN = 0.769. Based on the distance matrices, different clustering algorithms were realized. The main feature shared by different dendrograms was a separate position of the cluster joining Far-Eastern dace species, to which P. leptocephalus and L. waleckii are successively added. Among the species studied, the proportion of loci similar by expression (E) varied from 87 to 100%. The greatest difference was found between anadromous and nonanadromous ecotypes of T. hakonensis, E = 67%. The following conclusions can be made: (1) Four studied species of the genus Tribolodon are rather well genetically differentiated. Diagnostic loci are available. (2) A nominal dace species, T. species, should be considered the fourth isolated species of this genus, which is confirmed by its recent zoological acceptance of this species. (3) The origin and divergence of dace species belonging to the genus Tribolodon are relatively late (1 to 3 Myr ago) historical events. (4) Taxonomically, the genus Tribolodon belong to the tribe Pseudaspinini together with P. leptocephalus, which is confirmed by genetic data. (5) Data on heterozygosity and the divergence of structural and regulatory elements of genome, along with the proposed scheme of speciation types, suggest the following speciation modes for the species studied: for four species, adaptive divergence and for two species, genetic transformation.  相似文献

Several studies have recently reported that common species are more important for species richness patterns than rare species. However, most such studies have been based on broad‐scale atlas data. We studied the contribution of different species occupancy, i.e. number of plots occupied, to species richness patterns emerging from species data in 50 by 50 m plots within six 140–200 ha forests in Norway. The study included vascular plants, lichens, bryophytes, and polypore fungi. We addressed the following questions: 1) are common species more correlated with species richness than rare species? 2) How do occupancy classes combine at various levels of species richness? 3) Which occupancy class is best in identifying the overall most species‐rich sites (hotspots) by sampling? The results showed that rare species were better correlated with species richness than common species when the information content was accounted for, that high species richness was associated with a higher proportion of less frequent species, and that the best occupancy class for local hotspot identification was species present in 10–30% of the plots within a forest. We argue that the observed correlations between overall richness and sub‐assembly richness are primarily structured by the combination of the distributions of species richness and species occupancy. Although these distributions result from general ecological processes, they may also be strongly affected by idiosyncratic elements of the individual datasets caused by the specific environmental composition of a study area. Hence, different datasets collected in different areas may lead to different results regarding the relative importance of common versus rare species, and such effects should be expected on both broad and fine spatial scales. Despite these effects, we suggest that infrequent species will tend to be more strongly correlated to species richness at local scales than at broader scales as a result of more right‐skewed species‐occupancy distributions.  相似文献
