The polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) composition of the mammalian central nervous system is almost wholly composed of two long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and arachidonic acid (AA). PUFA are dietarily essential, thus normal infant/neonatal brain, intellectual growth and development cannot be accomplished if they are deficient during pregnancy and lactation. Uniquely in the human species, the fetal brain consumes 70% of the energy delivered to it by mother. DHA and AA are needed to construct placental and fetal tissues for cell membrane growth, structure and function. Contemporary evidence shows that the maternal circulation is depleted of AA and DHA during fetal growth. Sustaining normal adult human brain function also requires LC-PUFA.Homo sapiens is unlikely to have evolved a large, complex, metabolically expensive brain in an environment which did not provide abundant dietary LC-PUFA. Conversion of 18-carbon PUFA from vegetation to AA and DHA is considered quantitatively insufficient due to a combination of high rates of PUFA oxidation for energy, inefficient and rate limited enzymatic conversion and substrate recycling. The littoral marine and lacustrine food chains provide consistently greater amounts of pre-formed LC-PUFA than the terrestrial food chain. Dietary levels of DHA are 2.5–100 fold higher for equivalent weights of marine fish or shellfish vs. lean or fat terrestrial meats. Mammalian brain tissue and bird egg yolks, especially from marine birds, are the richest terrestrial sources of LC-PUFA. However, land animal adipose fats have been linked to vascular disease and mental ill-health, whereas marine lipids have been demonstrated to be protective. At South African Capesites, large shell middens and fish remains are associated with evidence for some of the earliest modern humans. Cape sites dating from 100 to 18 kya cluster within 200 km of the present coast. Evidence of early H. sapiens is also found around the Rift Valley lakes and up the Nile Corridor into the Middle East; in some cases there is an association with the use of littoral resources. Exploitation of river, estuarine, stranded and spawning fish, shellfish and sea bird nestlings and eggs by Homo could have provided essential dietary LC-PUFA for men, women, and children without requiring organized hunting/fishing, or sophisticated social behavior. It is however, predictable from the present evidence that exploitation of this food resource would have provided the advantage in multi-generational brain development which would have made possible the advent of H. sapiens. Restriction to land based foods as postulated by the savannah and other hypotheses would have led to degeneration of the brain and vascular system as happened without exception in all other land based apes and mammals as they evolved larger bodies.  相似文献

The lipid, fatty acid and fatty alcohol compositions were determined for muscle samples from six species of deep-sea oreo collected from Australian waters; namely Neocyttus rhomboidalis, Neocyttus sp., Allocyttus verrucosus, Allocyttus niger, Pseudocyttus maculatus, and Oreosoma atlanticum. Neocyttus helgae, landed in North Atlantic waters, was also analysed. Similar analyses were also carried out on the muscle and swim bladder of the orange roughy Hoplostethus atlanticus from both Australian and North Atlantic waters. Orange roughy is currently a major commercial species in southern Australia and is a new-fishery in the North Atlantic; there are four species of oreo of increasing commercial significance in Australia due to orange roughy quota reductions. It is therefore necessary to determine if the oreo fishing industry is capable of supplementing the current orange roughy requirements with respect to muscle and oil demand. In the oreos, the mean lipid content ranged from 0.5 to 3% of wet weight, with a mixed lipid composition including wax ester, triacylglycerol, sterol and polar lipid. The ratio of the monounsaturated fatty alcohols 22:1 to 20:1 allowed samples from the two geographical regions to be distinguished. Total wax ester in muscle from North Atlantic male orange roughy was much higher than in Australian fish (27 vs. 8.5% wet weight, respectively); females from both locations contained similar amounts of wax ester (4.5 vs. 3.3%, respectively). Selected swim bladders from North Atlantic and Australian orange roughy show similar wax ester content (90 vs. 82%, respectively). The ratio of 22:1 to 20:1 fatty alcohols in orange roughy from the two regions was 0.5 (Australian) and 1.4 (North Atlantic). Indeed differences exist between oreos from the two locations, but not between orange roughy and this requires further investigation. With respect to the nutritional value, the oreos are more attractive than the orange roughy however lipid levels remain much lower compared with other popular species.  相似文献

Farmed fish could substitute for marine capture fish as a source of fatty acids such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) beneficial for human health; however, they require these compounds in their diets. In the present study on a model fish species, we modified the EPA/DHA biosynthesis pathway by overexpression of masu salmon Δ5-desaturase-like gene in zebrafish to increase its ability to synthesize EPA and DHA. Expression of this gene in transgenic fish fed a commercial diet and Artemia helped to improve their EPA content by 1.21-fold and DHA by 1.24-fold. In similar fish that were fed only Artemia the increments were 1.14-fold for EPA and 1.13-fold for DHA, compared with nontransgenic fish. In contrast, eicosatetraenoic acid content decreased, as it is a substrate of Δ5-desaturase, while the total lipid remained constant. The results demonstrated that masu salmon Δ5-desaturase is functional in zebrafish and can modify its fatty acid metabolic pathway. The technique could be applied to farmed fish to generate a nutritionally richer product for human consumption.  相似文献

Current recommendations for arachidonic (AA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids in infant formulae are based on milk of Western mothers. Validity may be questioned in view of the profound dietary changes in the past 100 years, as opposed to our slowly adapting genome. Hominin evolution occurred in the proximity of East-African freshwater lakes and rivers and early homo sapiens had higher intakes of AA and DHA from a predominantly lacustrine-based diet. In search of milk AA and DHA contents of our African ancestors, we investigated the milk of 29 lactating women living in Doromoni near lake Kitangiri (Tanzania). They consumed sunflower oil-fried local fish as only animal lipid sources, maize and local vegetables. AA and DHA contents of Doromoni milk may be close to that of early homo sapiens, because of the similarity of their life-long consumption of East-African lacustrine-based foods. Human milk fatty acid relationships from our historical worldwide database and the literature revealed that disparities between the Doromoni diet and the presumed ancient diet (i.e. higher carbohydrate and linoleic acid intakes) are unlikely to affect milk AA and DHA contents. Doromoni milk had high contents of AA (median 0.70 mol%), DHA (0.75) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 0.17), and low AA/DHA ratios (median 0.91; 0.55-2.61). This tracks down to consumption of fish with high AA and DHA contents, and AA/EPA ratios. We conclude that the milk AA, DHA and EPA contents of Doromoni women might provide us with clues to optimize infant formulae and perhaps the milk of Western women.  相似文献

Ocean fish are an important staple food for many Caribbean persons. Some species, however, have high Hg concentration levels and represent a significant source of Hg exposure. This study assessed Hg concentrations in fish species commonly caught and consumed in Barbados as well as Hg exposure of those who work in the fishing industry. Total Hg concentrations were measured in 100 fish samples. Human Hg concentrations were determined from hair snippets taken from 46 fisher folk and fish consumption habits evaluated using interview-administered questionnaires. Mercury levels varied by fish species with predatory fish species having the highest concentrations. Low Hg concentrations were found in dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus) and flyingfish (Hirundichthys affinis). Reported fish consumption rates were high and varied significantly between men and women, 2675 ± 1600 and 1275 ± 600 (g/week), respectively (p = 0.01). The median hair Hg concentration was 3.1 ± 2.3 μg/g (range: 0.01–15.6 μg/g) and significantly associated with consumption of “high-risk” fish species (p = .02). These results show that it is possible to make informed choices concerning fish consumption habits in order to maximize benefits while minimizing the effect of Hg exposures, especially for sensitive groups such as pregnant women and infants.  相似文献

We evaluate hypotheses for meso-scale spatial structure in an orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus) stock using samples collected during research trawl surveys off the east coast of New Zealand. Distance-based linear models and generalised additive models were used to identify the most significant biological, environmental, and temporal predictors of variability in diet, proportion of stomachs containing prey, standardised weight of prey, fish somatic weight, fish total weight, and reproductive activity. The diet was similar to that observed elsewhere, and varied with ontogeny, depth, and surface water temperature. Smaller sized and female orange roughy in warmer bottom water were most likely to contain food. Fish condition and reproductive activity were highest at distances more than 20 km from the summit of the hills. Trawl survey catches indicated greater orange roughy densities in hill strata, suggesting hill habitat was favoured. However, analyses of feeding, condition, and reproductive activity indicated hill fish were not superior, despite fish densities on hills being reduced by fishing which, in principle, should have reduced intra-specific competition for food and other resources. Hypotheses for this result include: (1) fish in relatively poor condition visit hills to feed and regain condition and then leave, or (2) commercial fishing has disturbed feeding aggregations and/or caused habitat damage, making fished hills less productive. Mature orange roughy were observed on both flat and hill habitat during periods outside of spawning, and if this spatial structure was persistent then a proportion of the total spawning stock biomass would remain unavailable to fisheries targeting hills. Orange roughy stock assessments informed only by data from hills may well be misleading.  相似文献

Information on the status of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) in pregnancy and breast milk in very high fish-eating populations is limited. The aim of this study was to examine dietary intake and changes in fatty acid status in a population of pregnant women in the Republic of Seychelles. Serum docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) decreased significantly between 28-week gestation and delivery (n=196). DHA status did not correlate significantly with length of gestation and was not associated with self-reported fish intake, which was high at 527 g/week. In breast milk, the ratio of DHA to arachidonic acid (AA) was consistent with those observed in other high fish-eating populations. Overall the data suggest that high exposure to LCPUFAs from habitual fish consumption does not prevent the documented decrease in LCPUFA status in pregnancy that occurs as a result of foetal accretion in the third trimester of pregnancy.  相似文献

The distributions of length frequencies subdivided by age of orange roughy (Hoplostethus atlanticus: Trachichthyidae) had the modal characteristics of K-selected populations. Oceanographic data showed that the depth strata occupied by orange roughy have boundary characteristics which could lead to the development of non-equilibrium dissipative thermodynamic structures and which would account for the K-selection configuration of orange roughy stocks.  相似文献

Seafood is an important source of nutrients for fetal neurodevelopment. Most individuals are exposed to the toxic element mercury through seafood. Due to the neurotoxic effects of mercury, United States government agencies recommend no more than 340 g (12 oz) per week of seafood consumption during pregnancy. However, recent studies have shown that selenium, also abundant in seafood, can have protective effects against mercury toxicity. In this study, we analyzed mercury and selenium levels and selenoprotein mRNA, protein, and activity in placenta of a cohort of women in Hawaii in relation to maternal seafood consumption assessed with dietary surveys. Fish consumption resulted in differences in mercury levels in placenta and cord blood. When taken as a group, those who consumed no fish exhibited the lowest mercury levels in placenta and cord blood. However, there were numerous individuals who either had higher mercury with no fish consumption or lower mercury with high fish consumption, indicating a lack of correlation. Placental expression of selenoprotein mRNAs, proteins and enzyme activity was not statistically different in any region among the different dietary groups. While the absence of seafood consumption correlates with lower average placental and cord blood mercury levels, no strong correlations were seen between seafood consumption or its absence and the levels of either selenoproteins or selenoenzyme activity.  相似文献

Epidemiological studies indicate that fish consumption during pregnancy leads to improved neurodevelopment. This suggests that the beneficial nutrients in fish may offset the adverse effects of mercury in the case of the average fish meal. However, our previous risk/benefit model predicted a net neurodevelopmental risk for the majority of species analyzed. In this article the previous model is calibrated against fish benefit data and then compared to other fish risk/benefit models, including recent models from the World Health Organization and USFDA. Our calibrated model estimated greater benefit for low mercury species but greater risk for high mercury species than the other models. With respect to a commonly eaten high mercury fish, swordfish, the calibrated model yielded risks that are supportive of current fish advisories but, in contrast, the other models predicted net neurodevelopmental benefits. The calibrated model was used in a proposed 3 step framework for setting fish consumption advisories: (1) Set initial consumption level based upon mercury RfD; (2) Adjust consumption upward if risk/benefit model indicates a net benefit; (3) Cap fish consumption based upon saturation of O-3 benefit. The implications of this approach for 7 varieties of fish are used to illustrate the framework.  相似文献

A 6‐month long study was conducted to improve the nutritional quality of the cultured sobaity bream, Sparidentex hasta by feeding them finisher feeds containing high docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) at the last two months of the grow‐out stage so that the muscle DHA level be increased at par to the wild. A grow‐out feed used from the beginning until the end of the trial was considered as the control (Diet 1). Experimental diets 2 and 3 were formulated to contain 9.0% DHA (e.g. 1.68 g DHA/100 g feed) and 10.5% DHA (2.20 g DHA/100 g feed), by incorporating high DHA tuna oil into a sea bream grow‐out diet. For comparison, a commercial finisher feed (Diet 4) from Skretting, Italy was also used. The results of this study demonstrated that fish fed DHA enriched finisher diets resulted in significantly (p < .05) better growth, feed utilization and higher muscle eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and DHA content compared to those fed grow‐out diet. The muscle DHA and EPA of fish fed finisher diets were also higher than those of the whole year average DHA and EPA content of wild sobaity. An organoleptic evaluation showed no significant (p > .05) differences between sensory attributes of muscle from cultured and wild sea bream. The results of the study demonstrated that feeding finisher feed enriched with DHA at the later part of the grow‐out operation, the n‐3 PUFA levels of cultured sobaity can cost‐effectively be increased at par to the wild.  相似文献

In the current study, the effect of frozen storage at ?18°C was evaluated on fatty acid composition of different body parts (liver, muscle tissue, and viscera) of narrow‐barred Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus commerson, Lacépède, 1800), longtail tuna (Thunnus tonggol, Bleeker, 1851), kawakawa (Euthynnus affinis, Cantor, 1849), king mackerel (Scomberomorus guttatus, Bloch & Schneider, 1801), and rainbow sardine (Dussumieria acuta, Valenciennes, 1847) caught in the Persian Gulf. Changes in saturated fatty acids (SFAs), monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), eicosapentaenoic acid plus docosahexaenoic acid/palmitic acid (EPA+DHA/C16), ω3 PUFA/ω6 PUFA (ω3/ω6), and polyunsaturated fatty acids/saturated fatty acids (PUFA/SFA) were investigated during a 6‐month period. A decrease in unsaturated fatty acids, particularly PUFAs (60–100%) as well as ω3/ω6, EPA+DHA/C16 (polyene index) and PUFA/SFA ratios, indicated a decrease in the nutritional values of the samples.  相似文献

The study examined the proximate composition, cholesterol content and fatty acid profile of fillet from the most important species captured in Italian seas and commonly consumed in the European Union, such as anchovy (Engraulis encrasicholus L.), red mullet (Mullus barbatus L.), European hake (Merluccius merluccius L.) and Atlantic bonito (Sarda sarda L.). The fish were caught in three different geographic areas of the Italian seas: south Tyrrhenian (ST), south Adriatic (SA) and Ionian (IO). Anchovy from the ST sea had the highest lipid content (2.27%) compared to fish captured in the SA (1.81%) and IO seas (1.91%) (P < 0.01). Red mullet captured in the SA exhibited the highest amount of lipid content (7.54%) compared to fish from the ST (1.82%) and IO seas (3.23%) (P < 0.01). The total cholesterol content of fish did not show significant differences from one geographic area to the other, particularly for European hake (from 98 to 66 mg per 100 g). The fatty acid profile of anchovy species was not affected by the geographical capture area. European hake caught in the ST sea showed the highest proportion of DHA (29.13%) in comparison to those captured in the SA (19.98%) and IO seas (19.84%). Atlantic bonito from the ST had the highest proportions of DHA (24.94%), compared to those from the SA (12.08%) and IO seas (13.83%). The SA bonitos contained a significantly lower proportion of EPA (3.31%) in comparison to fish from both the ST and IO seas (5.66 and 5.17%, respectively). Red mullet captured in the ST exhibited the highest proportions of DHA, n‐3 PUFA, and total PUFA, and significantly lower proportions of oleic acid and MUFA. The fish from the ST sea showed better nutritional traits than those from other geographical areas although they all had excellent nutritional traits due to the low fat content and very high n‐3 PUFA proportion.  相似文献

Investigated were the changes in fatty acid composition, oxidation and enzymatic deterioration of lipids in frozen (−30°C) fish fillets from the Persian Gulf. The narrow barred Spanish mackerel ( Scomberomorus commersoni ) and white cheek shark ( Carcharhinus dussumieri ) were tested with storage times of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 months at −18°C. Statistical results showed that the major fatty acids among the saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids of each fish species were palmitic (C16:0) and oleic (C18:1n-9) acids, respectively. Both linoleic acid (C18:2n-6) and arachidonic acid (AA) (C20:4n-6) were predominant in total n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids in both mackerel and shark. The EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid; C20:5 n-3) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid; C22:6 n-3) acids were the major fatty acids among total n-3 acids in both fishes. During frozen storage, the PUFA (40.1 and 23.94%), n-3 (48 and 42.83%), ω 3/ ω 6 (41.36 and 50%), PUFA/SFA (56 and 42.23%) and EPA + DHA/C16 (55.55 and 46.66%) contents decreased in S. commersoni and C. dussumieri , respectively. Also peroxide, thiobarbituric acid (TBA) and free fatty acid (FFA) values significantly increased (P < 0.01) with the time of storage.  相似文献

A summary of all existing information collected since 1980 on contaminants in tilapia from the Salton Sea is presented and risks to humans and fish-eating birds assessed. Of the 17 trace elements, 42 organic pesticides and 48 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) analyzed in tilapia whole body and fillet samples, only selenium (Se), arsenic (As) and possibly dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDE) were found at levels high enough to be of concern for fish, birds or humans. Average current concentration of arsenic (As) was 0.7 μg g−1 wet weight (ww) in whole body samples and 1.2 μg g−1 ww in fillet samples, or 2.8 and 5.7 μg g−1 dry weight (dw), respectively. Inorganic As averaged 0.006 μg g−1 ww (0.03 μg g−1 dw) in fillet samples, which represented 0.3% of total As. By U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S.EPA) guidelines, As levels in tilapia pose no threat of non-cancerous adverse health effects in children and adults. As is a known human carcinogen, however, and U.S.EPA cancer risk assessment procedures indicate that a weekly consumption of 540 g (19 oz) or more for 70 years would increase the upper bound cancer risk by 1 in 100,000 consumers exposed. Average current Se concentration was 2.2 μg g−1 ww in tilapia whole body samples and 1.9 μg g−1 ww in fillet (8.3 and 9 μg g−1 dw, respectively). Consumption of Se-contaminated tilapia was found to present no unacceptable risk for adverse health effects for adults consuming up to 1000 g (35 oz) of fillet per week even when additional intakes of Se from other food items were taken into account. Similarly, children weighing 30 kg or more could safely eat up to 430 g (15 oz) of tilapia fillet on a weekly basis. A health advisory issued by the State of California in 1986 recommended, on the basis of Se levels, that consumption of any fish from the Salton Sea be limited to 114 g (4 oz) every 2 weeks, but the rationale and calculations on which that advisory was based are unavailable. We suggest that the existing health advisory for Salton Sea tilapia be revised by the state in light of this new information and updated risk parameters for As and Se. Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDE) was detected in all samples of tilapia, with current levels averaging 0.085 μg g−1 in whole tilapia and 0.032 μg g−1 in fillet ww. Compared to screening values proposed by the U.S. EPA, these concentrations are unlikely to cause non-cancerous health effects in anglers, but one might exceed a 1 × 10−5 increase in cancer risk by consuming more than 4 meals of tilapia per week. Similarly, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were detected in tilapia fillets at levels that may increase the cancer risk for those anglers also eating more than 4 meals of tilapia per week. These determinations are based, however, on DDE concentrations reported from a small sample size (n = 4), and on screening values recommended by U.S.EPA. The paucity of DDE and total DDT analyses carried out in recent times on the edible portion of Salton Sea tilapia warrants additional analyses in order to evaluate the need for issuance of a fish consumption advisory with regards to long term exposure to total DDT via consumption of Salton Sea fish. With regards to the potential impact on fish and piscivorous birds, we cannot conclude whether concentrations of As in tilapia could pose a threat to the fish and the birds feeding on them. Se concentrations, however, may be elevated enough to negatively affect fish health, and reproduction and immune systems of piscivorous birds, but definitive studies are lacking. Total DDT and PCB concentrations in whole tilapia are not elevated enough to have adverse effects on fish and piscivorous birds. Fish harvesting for fish meal production has been proposed for the Salton Sea. Based on whole fish dry weight values of 61% protein and 21% ash, and the determined contaminant levels, tilapia could yield a meal of reasonable quality for use in formulating poultry, livestock and aquaculture feeds. To assess the prevalence of drinking among medical students a questionnaire on smoking, exercise, drinking, and weight was distributed among the students available. A total of 260 replies were received from an estimated available population of 350 students (134 men and 126 women). The mean alcohol consumption obtained by a quantity-frequency measure was 20.5 units/week for male students and 14.6 units/week for female students. Retrospective diary reports showed mean (SE) consumptions of 18 (2) units/week for men (n = 134) and 11 (1) units/week for women (n = 126). Consumption among the men closely matched consumption among men matched for age in the general population. Women, however, drank more than women matched for age. Male and female medical students exceeded the suggested maximum for their sex in equal proportions. Quantity-frequency data showed that 31 (23%) men drank over 35 units/week and 28 (22%) women drank over 21 units/week. Of the 59 students exceeding these limits, 51 responded positively to a standard screening questionnaire for alcohol abuse. Forty students reported that they might have a drinking problem, and 138 reported that alcohol had affected their academic performance at some time; 17 of these were affected frequently. The students suggested sensible maximum consumption figures for health education. Smoking was associated with heavy drinking, especially among the women. These results suggest that some medical students are compromising their future health and their academic performance through excessive drinking.  相似文献

Objective: To assess the association, in a Mediterranean population, between nut consumption and risk of weight gain (at least 5 kg) or the risk of becoming overweight/obese. Research Methods and Procedures: The Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra project is a prospective cohort of 8865 adult men and women who completed a follow‐up questionnaire after a median of 28 months. Dietary habits were assessed with a previously validated semiquantitative food‐frequency questionnaire. Results: Nine hundred thirty‐seven participants reported a weight gain of ≥5 kg at follow‐up. After adjusting for age, sex, smoking, leisure time physical activity, and other known risk factors for obesity, participants who ate nuts two or more times per week had a significantly lower risk of weight gain (odds ratio: 0.69; 95% confidence interval: 0.53 to 0.90, p for trend = 0.006) than those who never or almost never ate nuts. Participants with little nut consumption (never/almost never) gained an average of 424 grams (95% confidence interval: 102 to 746) more than frequent nut eaters. Nut consumption was not significantly associated with incident overweight/obesity in the cohort. Discussion: Frequent nut consumption was associated with a reduced risk of weight gain (5 kg or more). These results support the recommendation of nut consumption as an important component of a cardioprotective diet and also allay fears of possible weight gain.  相似文献

The Northeast Atlantic mackerel (Scomber scombrus) has been extending its summer feeding distribution north and west, including around Iceland, since around 2006. The objective of this study is to quantify the weight gain and total food consumption of mackerel and to evaluate the food competition between mackerel and herring (Clupea harengus) feeding in the marine ecosystem around Iceland during the summers 2009–2011. Mackerel feeding in Icelandic waters gained around 43% on average in weight during these summers. Based on swept-area abundance estimates of mackerel from an international survey in 2011 and available estimates of food conversion efficiency in mackerel, the weight gain in Icelandic waters in 2011 corresponded to a total consumption of around 3.4 (2.4?4.5) million tonnes. Overall, 98% of 2314 mackerel, 91% of 398 Icelandic summer-spawning herring and 96% of 424 Norwegian spring-spawning herring stomachs, collected over the summers 2009?2011, contained food. The mean weight of the stomach content of mackerel was higher than for herring in all the years. While the stomach content weight of mackerel was generally highest in southeastern and southwestern areas, it was highest for herring in western, eastern and northern areas. Analysis of stomach contents showed that Copepoda were the most important food of mackerel in most areas, while Copepoda and Euphausiacea were the most important food items for herring. Fish prey contributed a higher proportion in stomachs of mackerel than herring, although relatively low for both species.  相似文献

Triplicate groups of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax L.), of initial mass 5 g, were fed one of three practical type diets for 64 weeks. The three diets differed only in the added oil and were 100% fish oil (FO; diet A), 40% FO/60% vegetable oil blend (VO; diet B) where the VO blend was rapeseed oil, linseed oil and palm oil in the ratio 10/35/15 by weight and 40% FO/60% VO blend (diet C) where the ratio was 24/24/12 by weight. After final sample collection the remaining fish were switched to a 100% FO finishing diet for a further 20 weeks. After 64 weeks fish fed 60% VO diet B had significantly lower live mass and liver mass than fish fed diets A and C although SGR, FCR and length were not different between groups. There were no differences in any of the above parameters after either 14 or 20 weeks on the FO finishing diet. Fatty acid compositions of flesh were correlated to dietary fatty acids although there was selective retention of docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3; DHA) regardless of dietary input. Inclusion of dietary VO resulted in significantly reduced flesh levels of DHA and eicosapentaenoic acid (20:5n-3; EPA) while 18:1n-9, 18:2n-6 and 18:3n-3 were all significantly increased in fish fed the 60% VO diets. Fatty acid compositions of liver showed broadly similar changes, as a result of dietary fatty acid composition, as was seen in flesh. However, the response of flesh and liver to feeding a FO finishing diet was different. In flesh, DHA and EPA values were not restored after 14 or 20 weeks of feeding a FO finishing diet with the values in fish fed the two 60% VO diets being around 70% of the values seen in fish fed FO throughout. Conversely, and despite liver DHA and EPA levels being reduced to only 40% of the value seen in fish fed 100% FO after 64 weeks, the levels of liver DHA and EPA were not significantly different between treatments after feeding the FO finishing diet for 14 weeks. However, a 200 g portion of sea bass flesh, after feeding the experimental diets for 64 weeks followed by a FO diet for 14 weeks, contained 1.22 and 0.95 g of EPA + DHA for fish fed FO or 60% VO, respectively. Therefore, sea bass grown for most of the production cycle using diets containing 60% VO can still contribute a significant quantity of healthy n-3 HUFA to the human consumer.  相似文献

The intracellular concentration of 5,8,11,14,17-cis-eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and 4,7,10,13,16,19-cis-docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was carried out by Mortierella alpina 1S-4 in a medium containing fish oil as the main carbon source. The EPA and DHA contents reached 29.2% and 20.0% of total fatty acids, respectively, when the fungus was grown in a medium containing salmon oil (EPA and DHA contents, 14.0% and 17.3%, respectively) as the main carbon source in a 5-1 bench-scale fermentor.
