In 1969, 1970 and 1971 respectively, 11761, 13844 and 20053Salmonella strains were screened for resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol and tetracycline. It was found that in these years respectively 23.4%, 19.3% and 15.1% of the isolated strains were resistant to one or more of these antibiotics. Most strains appeared to be only tetracycline-resistant. Resistance to chloramphenicol remained low (0.56% and less). During 1971 64 kanamycin-resistant strains (0.32%) were isolated. The resistance ofSalmonellae to drugs has been studied in the Netherlands since 1958. In 1972, 1973, and 1974 respectively, 14241, 13086, and 22927 strains were tested for resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, kanamyci and tetracycline. From 1973 all strains were also tested for resistance to trimethoprim. In the period covered, the yearly incidence of resistance to at least one of the above drugs ranged from 39.2% to 45.6% of all strains obtained from various sources (humans, animals, animal products, sewage, etc.). A new finding in the period 1972 to 1974 was that many multiply resistant strains emerged inS. typhimurium and inS. dublin isolated from calves and cattle. In 1974, 64.4% of all strains ofS. typhimurium from these animals appeared to be resistant to ampicillin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol and kanamycin, and 25.5% of those ofS. dublin were found to be resistant to chloramphenicol and tetracycline. Of all strains ofSalmonellae examined in 1973 and 1974 respectively, 0.15 and 0.22% were resistant to trimethoprim, the main component of the twin-drug cotrimoxazol. Of the 142 strains ofS. typhi isolated in 1972 to 1974 two were resistant to tetracycline only, and one was resistant to all four antibiotics. Inducible character of resistance to tetracycline, chloramphenicol and ampicillin was investigated in 20 strains of Vibrio cholera non-O1/non-O139 serogroups isolated from inhabitants of Uzbekistan in 1990 (10 strains, ctx+) and in 2001 (5 strains, ctx-) and from inhabitants of Kalmykiya within 2003-2005 (5 strains, ctx-). Eight of the 20 isolates showed not only capacity for induction of the antibiotic resistance, but also its possible self transfer to Escherichia coli and reverse crosses in El Tor V. cholerae P-5879. It was shown that the effect of the antibacterial on the isolates phenotypic susceptibility could increase the resistance markers expression, when the genomes contained sites responsible for their expression, that required constant bacteriological control of the treatment efficacy and the use of the isolates antibioticograms for early replace of the inefficient drug by the efficient one. The prevalence of V. cholerae O1 and non-O1/non-O13 serogroups with multiple resistance to the antibacterial and the genetic potency for the antibiotic resistance development in the pathogen made difficult the choice of efficient drugs for prophylaxis and treatment of diseases caused by V. cholerae.  相似文献

Summary The rate of resistance to tetracycline and chloramphenicol amongSalmonella strains isolated in the Netherlands in 1961 was found to be 3.96%, the corresponding figures for 1958/1959 and 1961 being 2.08 and 1.29 respectively. In this country the total number ofSalmonella types found to develop resistance to either tetracycline or chloramphenicol now amounts to 38. Almost 77% of all resistant strains isolated in 1961 were found among the human pathogenS.typhimurium. The relative frequency of resistance in this organism was 8.18%, as compared with 2.50% in 1958/1959 and 1.80% in 1960. In 1961 some cross infections caused by tetracycline resistant strains ofS.typhimurium were observed in man and on one occasion also in a herd of calves. A similar outbreak due to a tetracycline resistant strain ofS.bovis morbificans was seen in a hospital. As almost 87% of all antibiotic resistant strains found in 1961 originated from human patients, the resistance must be largely attributed to the therapeutic use of the drugs in question.  相似文献

Increasing levels of resistance to tetracycline and to a number of other unrelated antibiotics, including chloramphenicol, beta-lactams, puromycin, and nalidixic acid, occurred in Escherichia coli after 50 to 200 generations of growth in the presence of subinhibitory concentrations of tetracycline or chloramphenicol. In the absence of selective pressure, resistances fell to low levels within 100 generations of growth. This amplification of resistance was observed in laboratory and naturally occurring E. coli strains as well as in polA and recA strains. With the exception of previously identified cmlA and cmlB mutations, tetracycline or chloramphenicol resistances were not P1 transducible. Coincident with the emergence of resistance was the appearance of a previously cryptic energy-dependent efflux system for tetracycline. The expression of resistance phenotypes and the tetracycline efflux system were temperature sensitive at 42 degrees C.  相似文献

The elucidation of the molecular details of antibiotic resistance will lead to improvements in extending the efficacy of current antimicrobials. In the current study, proteomic methodologies were applied to characterize functional outer membrane proteins (Omps) of E. coli K-12 responded to tetracycline and ampicillin resistance for understanding of universal pathways that form barriers for antimicrobial agents. For this purpose, E. coli K-12 expressional outer membrane proteome was characterized and identified with the use of 2-DE and MALDI-TOF/MS methods. Then, differential Omps due to tetracycline or ampcilin resistance were determined by comparison between tetracycline minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)10, ampicillin MIC10, control0 and control10, showing 9 proteins with 11 spots for tetracycline and 8 protein with 9 spots for ampicillin, showing a difference in only 1 protein (decreased LamB in tetracyclin) between the two antibiotics. Among the proteins, 3 were known as antibiotic-resistant proteins, including TolC, OmpC and YhiU, while FimD precursor, LamB, Tsx, YfiO, OmpW, NlpB were first reported here to be antibiotic-resistance-related proteins. Our findings will be helpful for further understanding of antibiotic-resistant mechanism(s). This study also shows that the combination of Omp purification methods certainly contributes the sensitivity of Omp detection.  相似文献

The cat and tet genes of chloramphenicol- and tetracycline-resistant clinical isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae from Paris and Japan were shown to be contained in adjacent heterologous insertions into the chromosome. The two insertions transformed laboratory strains at frequencies that were low, unequal, and, for tet, very sensitive to the length of the donor deoxyribonucleic acid strand. In contrast, the transforming activity of cat was relatively stable. There was an unusual asymmetric cotransfer, in that a majority of the tet transformants also acquired cat, whereas only a few of the cat transformants also acquired tet. The evidence for chromosomal insertion came from genetic data showing linkage of cat to a chromosomal gene and from cosedimentation of cat with chromosomal markers in both velocity and dye-buoyancy experiments. Genes on a known plasmid introduced into pneumococcus from Streptococcus faecalis showed very different physical behavior. Most of the transformation properties of these genes can be readily accounted for by analogy to transformation of deletions of normal genes. Whether transposition contributes any of the transfers remains to be determined. The presence of one of the genes in the recipient promoted the integration of the other, demonstrating enhanced accumulation of heterologous genes by a process that did not involve plasmids in the species of concern.  相似文献

Summary A primarily genetic approach was employed to obtain plasmids in Rhodococcus erythropolis ATCC 12674 which carried genes conferring increased resistance to sodium arsenate and arsenite, cadmium chloride, and chloramphenicol. The plasmids were large, migrating more slowly than chromosomal DNA in agarose gels, and were made up of resistance determinants from the host organism together with part of the genome of nocardiophage Q4. Purified plasmid was used to transform a suitable recipient to increased resistance to sodium arsenate, sodium arsenite, and cadmium chloride.  相似文献

The gliding bacterium Flexibacter sp. strain FS-1 exhibits inducible resistance to chloramphenicol (Cmr) and tetracycline (Tcr). Either chloramphenicol or tetracycline alone induced a Cmr Tcr phenotype. The resistance is apparently not plasmid encoded.  相似文献

Development of resistance to ampicillin and tetracycline in Escherichia resulted in an increase in the electrokinetic potential and a decrease in the level of hydration and isoelectric values of pH. The changes in the hydration level mainly depended on the accompanying dissociation. Studies on 3H-tetracycline binding revealed a low accumulation capacity of the resistant mutants. The rate of 3H-tetracycline binding did not depend on the changes in the physico-chemical parameters of the cell surface due to resistance and dissociation.  相似文献

Seven (6.1%) of 115 strains of Salmonella typhi isolated from Malaysian patients harbored a single large plasmid of 71 to 166 mD. Two of the seven plasmid-bearing strains were resistant to chloramphenicol (Cm) and tetracycline (Tc) and they transferred Cm and Tc resistance traits to Escherichia coli K12 at frequencies from 1.6 x 10(-7) to 1.9 x 10(-6). Agarose gel electrophoresis provided evidence that the resistance traits were cotransferred on a conjugative plasmid. The significance and importance of these results are discussed.  相似文献

Summary In the course of 1958 and 1959 12014Salmonella strains were collected and tested for antibiotic susceptibility. 250 or 2.08 per cent of these strains were found resistant to tetracycline, to chloramphenicol or both antibiotics. In the majority of cases it could be established that resistance was due to the application of these drugs in therapeutic or prophylactic doses.  相似文献
