Chronological ages of Alouattaon Barro Colorado Island (BCI) were estimated from longitudinal dental wear. Combining these data with visual censuses, we
approximated the study population’s age profile. A stable model was then constructed; from it we derived agespecific mortality
rates. Mortality of immature animals is high, with 88% of the males and 65% of the females dying before 5 years. Adult mortality
is low until 11 years, when it accelerates. The average adult life span is 16.6 years for males and 15.5 for females. The
maximum life span is over 20 years. A pubertal male growth spurt occurs from 3 to 5 years, at which time females are primiparous.
Sexual size differences develop primarily during this time. The 1976 age profile had anomalously few animals aged 7 years
and males aged 8–9 and 15–16 years. With corroborating evidence, we hypothesize that these deficits resulted from excessive
rainfall in 1963 and 1971, which reduced the fall fruit crop and led to a high juvenile mortality. Within half of our study
troops, some adult males have nearly identical ages, suggesting an active process of agemate coalition. We hypothesize a form
of kin selection, wherein peripheral male cohorts from the same natal troop have greater survival and social success than
solitary animals. The stable model suggests an annual growth rate of 1.5% during the 1970s. Estimates of 16.7 and 4% for the
previous two decades, following a yellow-fever epidemic, imply that the BCI population is becoming stationary. A very different
age structure existed on neighboring Orchid Island in 1976, suggesting general food limitation. By contrast, the lowered,
but continuing growth on BCI suggests a less drastic limiting mechanism. We hypothesize that intratroop social competition
limits population growth by regulating subadult survival rates during food scarcity cycles. 相似文献

Water is essential for animals, and is particularly critical for thermoregulation. Animals obtain water from three main sources, free water, water contained in food, and water produced in the body during metabolism. Howler monkeys (Alouatta spp.) spend a small proportion of their time drinking water and some populations have not been observed drinking, suggesting they obtain most of their water requirements in food or by metabolism. However, when howler monkeys have been observed drinking there is evidence suggesting the drinking is associated with low precipitation, temperature, and fruit consumption, and high mature leaf consumption, although it remains unclear which factors determine drinking by this genus. In this study we tested the hypothesis that drinking by howler monkeys results from increased hydration requirements in drier climates and from lower consumption of foods rich in water (e.g., new leaves, fruit). We tested this hypothesis by comparative analysis of 14 groups of Yucatán black howler monkeys (A. pigra) living under different climatic conditions. From April 2005 to November 2008 we collected a total of 3,747.2 focal observation hours of the feeding and drinking behavior of 60 individuals, with data on ambient temperature and rainfall. Individuals spent more time drinking when they lived in habitats with higher maximum temperature and when they consumed more mature leaves. For this species, therefore, drinking seems to be linked to heat stress and a low availability of water in ingested food. 相似文献

Proximate and ultimate explanations of interactions between infants and nonmothers vary depending upon the relatedness of the interactors. We investigated interactions of infants and nonmothers from a 22-month continuous study and from the long-term monitoring of the mantled howler population of La Pacifica, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica. Relatedness is low or absent in these mantled howler groups. Juvenile females appeared to practice care skills with older infants, but as most first infants died, they failed to benefit. Infant positive interactions with adults occurred with the mother and probable father. Other adult females behaved aggressively toward the youngest infants. Mothers were retentive of infants and responded negatively to these interactions, suggesting that they perceived them as threatening. Interactions with infants appear to reflect competition in groups of unrelated adults. A review of other populations of Alouatta palliata and other species of howlers indicate variability in social group size and suggest variability in intragroup relatedness. We suggest that further study will confirm that social behavior (including interactions with infants) will vary by resource availability (group size) and associated demographic patterns (male and female migration) that affect relatedness in howler social groups. 相似文献

Guatemala harbors three species of primates (Alouatta palliata, Alouatta pigra and Ateles geoffroyi), but the distribution and state of conservation of populations of these species are poorly documented. In the case of A. pigra, populations have been studied recently and documented in several sites in Mexico and Belize, and only in one site in Guatemala (Tikal National Park). In this study, we report first-time population data for A. pigra existing in the Lachuá Eco-region in northwestern Guatemala. Surveys were conducted between September 2002 and April 2003 in the northern portion (32 km2) of the Lachuá National Park (LLNP; 145 km2) and in a fragmented landscape north of the protected area. In this latter area we surveyed a large forest fragment (17.14 km2), "Nueve Cerros", and 26 small forest fragments that ranged in size from 0.01 to 3.9 km2. Surveys resulted in a total count of 414 howler monkeys of which 403 belonged to 80 mixed-sex groups, four were solitary males, two were solitary females and five were found in two male groups. Standardized sampling effort among sites indicated 16.7 monkeys/100 survey hours at LLNP, 35.8 individuals/100 survey hours at "Nueve Cerros" and 71.0+/-62.2 individuals/100 survey hours in the forest fragments. Mean group size varied from 4.07 individuals at LLNP to 5.19 individuals in the forest fragments. Conservation problems for the black howler population surveyed are discussed, along with possible conservation scenarios. 相似文献

We evaluated the habitat and populations of the black howler monkey (Alouatta pigra) in the municipality of Balancán, Tabasco, southeastern Mexico, using a combination of field surveys and remotely sensed data. We identified 21,937 ha of remnant vegetation composed of 1,348 fragments. Fragments separated by up to 200 m were grouped into "clusters" of fragments in accordance with the maximum observed open distance crossed by A. pigra. A total of 11% or 84 of the 772 clusters identified through remote sensing were selected at random, and for these we determined the vegetation type, canopy height, area, and distance to the closest human settlement. In these same 84 clusters, which included a total area of 9,817 ha, from October to June of 2006 we located a total of 1,064 black howler monkeys, including 228 troops and 49 solitary monkeys. A. pigra was found in 62 (74.7%) of all clusters visited, with a cumulative area of 6,032 ha. Troops varied in size from 2 to 15 individuals (average 6.0+/-2.9 ind/troop). Adults were 67% (n=716) of detected individuals, whereas juveniles were 20.5% (n=218) and infants were 12.5% (n=133). We found black howlers to occur at an ecological density of 10.8 ind/km(2), which is low in comparison with A. pigra in other fragmented and conserved sites. We found a statistically significant relationship between the area of clusters and the abundance of howler monkeys (r(2)=0.2, F=10.47, gl=3, P=0.002). In addition, the probability of finding A. pigra was greater in secondary vegetation, riparian vegetation, tropical dry forest, undisturbed tropical oak forest, and palm forest (F=12, gl=3, P<0.0001), as compared with disturbed tropical oak forest. Our results provide data on the distribution, abundance, and population structure of black howler monkeys in a fragmented landscape in the southeast of Mexico. These data are a necessary prerequisite for conservation planning for this species. 相似文献

Allium fistulosum harbours a number of desirable agronomical traits for the breeding of onions. However exploitation of A. fistulosum for onion breeding via direct sexual hybridization is problematic. Therefore, we examined if a bridge cross, using A. roylei as a bridging species, might provide an alternative. By means of genomic in situ hybridization (GISH) we showed that each
of the three parental genomes can be distinguished from the others in interspecific hybrids, suggesting that these genomes
contain sufficiently different repetitive DNA families. We succeeded in carrying out multi-colour GISH to metaphase spreads
of a first-generation bridge-cross individual [A. cepa× (A. fistulosum×A. roylei], which is composed of three parental genomes. Recombination between the genomes of A. fistulosum and A. roylei took place to a large extent: 7 recombined chromosomes were observed, and it could be shown that the proximal regions of
the recombined A. fistulosum/A. roylei chromosomes belonged to the former, whereas the distal parts belonged to the latter. The high percentage of bound bivalent
arms in metaphase I of pollen mother cells of a fertile bridge-cross individual suggests the introgression of A. fistulosum genes, mediated by A. roylei, into the genome of A. cepa. However, the presence of univalents reflects decreased pairing and recombination between the three genomes. Pollen fertility
and pollen-tube growth of the first-generation bridge-cross individual seem to be sufficient to produce a second generation
bridge-cross (A. cepa×first-generation bridge cross) progeny.

By means of dripping GAs(50 ppm) and NAA(40 ppm) on the hybrid boll-embryo culture in vitro, one F1 plant of G. hirsuturn × G. bickii was obtained in 1982, the Fx plant flowered profusely but failed to produce any seeds when selfed or back crossed. In meiosis of the pollen mother cell (PMC), mean chromosome coniugation was 33.24 Ⅰ +2.67 Ⅱ +0.095 Ⅲ + 0.048 Ⅳ with high frequence (77.6%) of one chiasma attenuated bivalents. Mean number of chiasmta per bivalents was 1.23. The univalents were scattered over the achromatic figure for most PMCs. Although a few of the bivalents were located in' the equatorial region, but they did not form a definite plate. At the second anaphase the distribution of chromosomes was very irregular. In the majority of cases, multipolar distripution of chromosomes was observed. At the completion of meiosis highly abnormal sporads occurred, which contained from 2 ro 13 spores of various sizes. Thus, all of the pollen grains produced were sterile. When the F1 branches were grafted onto the upland cotton and thence they were backcrossed under short day (12 hours) and cold night(15–18℃) exposure, BC1 seeds could be harvested. BC1 and BC2 plants could grow up later. In the BC, generation, the fertility of the hybrid was restored. By 1988, ten pure lines of hybrid with the characers of both male parent (viz.red petal with purple spot and strong fibre) and female parent (white fibre, high yield, earliness ect.) were selected for the first time. 相似文献

Comparatively little is known about the pathways of proximate causation that link divergent genotypes, via neurophysiological differences, to distinct, species-specific social behaviors and systems. One approach to the problem compares gross activity levels of monoamine neurotransmitters (norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin), evidenced by their metabolites —3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylglycol (MHPG), homovanillic acid (HVA), and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), respectively— in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). We have applied this method to Papio hamadryas and P. anubis, closely related baboon species with divergent social behavior, living in the Awash National Park (ANP), Ethiopia. We had previously shown that adult males of the two species differ in the ratio of HVA to 5-HIAA, and in concentrations of MHPG and HVA, but not 5-HIAA. Here, we compare monoamine metabolite levels of the parental species with those of 49 members of a naturally formed, multigenerational hamadryas × anubis hybrid group. We cage-trapped the baboons in July 1998, sampled their CSF by cisternal puncture, and assayed monoamine metabolites by high-performance liquid chromatography. Previous findings suggested, anomalously, that hybrid males showed the high 5-HIAA levels predicted by the low-serotonin–early-dispersal hypothesis (originally based on observation of rhesus macaques, Macaca mulatta), while hamadryas did not. The present study failed to find higher 5-HIAA levels in hybrids, resolving the anomaly, but leaving the previous result unexplained. Among adult females (underrepresented in our sample) and juveniles, metabolite levels of the hybrids did not differ significantly from either parental species. Overall, adult male hybrids resembled anubis in HVA and HVA/5-HIAA ratio, but did not show the low MHPG levels characteristic of that species. Consistent with a significant genetic influence on species differences in these metabolites, the adult hybrids showed intermediate means and greater intra-population diversity than the parental species for most variables, but showed no indication of hybrid dysgenesis in the form of low intermetabolite correlation. To the contrary, an enhanced HVA–MHPG correlation in the hybrids suggested a species-associated factor (not necessarily genetic) influencing both of these monoamine neurotransmitter systems. 相似文献

Ligularia × maoniushanensis (Asteraceae) is a natural hybrid species of Lduciformis and Lparadoxa. In order to study hybridization and genetic structure of taxa in the hybrid zones between Lduciformis and Lparadoxa, cross species SSR primers were screened using 94 individuals of two hybrid zones’ hybrids and its parents from 145 nuclear SSR primers which had been developed from Ligularia, Farfugium, Senecio and Helianthus. The results indicated that 54 loci were successfully amplified at least one taxon of three taxa. A total of 17 loci were successfully amplified at three taxa, of which 11 were polymorphic in L. × maoniushanensis, and the number of alleles (NA) ranged from 2 to 14 (average 48) and the ranges of observed (HO) and expected (HE) heterozygosities were 0053~1000 and 0051~0887, respectively. Of which 9 were polymorphic in Lduciformis, and the number of alleles (NA) ranged from 3 to 12 (average 74) and the ranges of observed (HO) and expected (HE) heterozygosities were 0200~0971 and 0283~0844, respectively. Of which 10 were polymorphic in Lparadoxa, the number of alleles (NA) ranged from 4 to 15 (average 7.6) and the ranges of observed (HO) and expected (HE) heterozygosities were 0025~0974 and 0097~0846, respectively. The results will facilitate the further analysis of genetic structure and hybrid extent about taxa in hybrid zone between Lduciformis and Lparadoxa. 相似文献

To evaluate differences among poplar clones of various ploidies, 12 hybrid poplar clones (P. simonii × P. nigra) × (P. nigra × P. simonii) with different ploidies were used to study phenotypic variation in growth traits and photosynthetic characteristics. Analysis of variance showed remarkable differences for each of the investigated traits among these clones (P < 0.01). Coefficients of phenotypic variation (PCV) ranged from 2.38% to 56.71%, and repeatability ranged from 0.656 to 0.987. The Pn (photosynthetic rate) photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) curves of the 12 clones were S-shaped, but the Pn-ambient CO2 (Ca) curves were shaped like an inverted “V”. The stomatal conductance (Gs)-PPFD and transpiration rate (Tr)-PPFD curves had an upward tendency; however, with increasing PFFD, the intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci)-PPFD curves had a downward tendency in all of the clones. The Pn-PPFD and Pn-Ca curves followed the pattern of a quadratic equation. The average light saturation point and light compensation point of the triploid clones were the highest and lowest, respectively, among the three types of clones. For Pn-Ca curves, diploid clones had a higher average CO2 saturation point and average CO2 compensation point compared with triploid and tetraploid clones. Correlation analyses indicated that all investigated traits were strongly correlated with each other. In future studies, molecular methods should be used to analyze poplar clones of different ploidies to improve our understanding of the growth and development mechanisms of polyploidy. 相似文献

Many group-living mammals and birds give both contact and distress calls. Contact calls are thought to operate in maintaining group stability and cohesion; distress calls are thought to operate in soliciting help, often from relatives. Here we propose that a single call of black-and-gold howlers (Alouatta caraya) serves both needs, but differently so during ontogeny. We collected data on the contexts of moo calling: on group diameter before, during, and after calling; and on calling rates before and after potentially stressful events or situations. Several relationships suggested a link between moo calling and group cohesion. The highest calling rates were found during travel, when separation is most likely, whereas rates were significantly lower during feeding, a sedentary activity. During periods of moo calling, group spread was significantly greater than normal, and spread decreased significantly after calling began. Moo calls were also given in situations of potential distress. When reluctant to cross an arboreal gap or refused the option of travel on an adult, infants gave moo calls more frequently than just after these predicaments were ended; infants also called more frequently immediately after a behavioral conflict. The moo call apparently has a dual role, in contact and distress, with the signal’s use changing with caller age: both uses may reflect a common underlying motivation of insecurity, as different contexts come to trigger insecurity during development. 相似文献

We describe the social organization, mating system, and social structure of a group of hybrid baboons (Papio anubis×P. hamadryas) in Ethiopia's Awash National Park. The group contained elements of both hamadryas and anubis societies. Overall, the group was a multimale, multifemale group that lacked cohesion and frequently formed subgroups. Subgroup formation was more strongly associated with predation risk than food availability. Although there were several hamadryas-like one-male units OMUs within the group, there was no evidence of a hamadryas multilevel society. Male and female members of OMUs were phenotypically more hamadryas-like than non-OMU individuals. The group contained substantial variation in the strength of inter- and intrasexual bonds: some females primarily groomed males while other females primarily groomed females, and the patterns were consistent with the OMU substructure. Despite some promiscuous mating, mating was biased towards the hamadryas condition for all group members. Additionally, rates of immigration and emigration were very low, and mean pairwise relatedness within the group is rising. For measures of intersexual bonding, all members of the group were intermediate between anubis and hamadryas individuals in less hybridized groups. The group was phenotypically and behaviorally more intermediate than it was in the 1970s (Sugawara, K. (1988). Primates 29: 429–448.) and the changes may indicate a relatively young and dynamic hybrid zone. 相似文献

Speciation is always a contentious and challenging issue following with the presence of gene flow. In Gossypium, there are many valuable resources and wild diploid cotton especially C and B genome species possess some excellent traits which cultivated cotton always lacks. In order to explore character transferring rule from wild cotton to upland tetraploid cotton, the [G. capitis-viridis × (G. hirsutum × G. australe)2] triple hybrid was synthesized by interspecies hybridization and chromosome doubling. Morphology comparisons were measured among this hybrid and its parents. It showed that trispecific hybrid F1 had some intermediate morphological characters like leaf style between its parents and some different characters from its parents, like crawl growth characteristics and two kind flower color. It is highly resistant to insects comparing with other cotton species by four year field investigation. By cytogenetic analysis, triple hybrid was further confirmed by meiosis behavior of pollen mother cells. Comparing with regular meiosis of its three parents, it was distinguished by the occurrence of polyads with various numbers of unbalanced microspores and finally generating various abnormal pollen grains. All this phenomenon results in the sterility of this hybrid. This hybrid was further identified by SSR marker from DNA molecular level. It showed that 98 selected polymorphism primers amplified effective bands in this hybrids and its parents. The genetic proportion of three parents in this hybrid is 47.8% from G. hirsutum, 14.3% from G. australe, 7.0% from G. capitis-viridis, and 30.9% recombination bands respectively. It was testified that wild genetic material has been transferred into cultivated cotton and this new germplasm can be incorporated into cotton breeding program. 相似文献
