Summary Diverse and abundant trace fossils of the deep-waterNereites ichnofacies have been found in well-dated Early Permian deep-water turbidites (Lercara Formation) of western Sicily (Italy). Conodonts indicate a latest Artinskian to Cathedralian (late Early Permian) age. Microfossils (pelagic conodonts, albaillellid Radiolaria, paleopsychrospheric ostracods, foraminiferal associations dominated byBathysiphon), trace fossils (deep-bathyal to abyssalNereites ichnofacies) and sedimentologic data collectively indicate a deep-water environment for the Early Permian turbidites of the Lercara Formation. The dominance ofAgrichnium and of thePaleodictyon subichnogeneraSquamodictyon andMegadictyon suggests that this icnofauna is closely related in ichnotaxonomic composition to other late Paleozoic deep-water ichnofaunas. The occurrence ofAcanthorhaphe. Dendrotichnium andHelicoraphe, to date only reported from Cretaceous or Tertiary flysch deposits, suggests that the entire ichnofauna corresponds well to previously documented Silurian-Tertiary flysch ichnofaunas. Eight new ichnospecies and a new ichnosubgenus,Megadictyon, are described.  相似文献

Numerous trace fossils are recognized in metasiliciclastic rocks of the Lower-Middle Ordovician Lower Hovin Group, Upper Ordovician Ekne Group and on roofing slates from an unknown locality (probably Ordovician) from the Trondheim region, central Norway. The trace fossil assemblages are dominated by meandering pascichnial forms, i.e., Helminthoidichnites in the Lower Hovin Group and Helminthoidichnites and Nereites in the slates. Protovirgularia, Dictyodora, ?Planolites and ?Palaeophycus are less common. Alcyonidiopsis, ?Trichophycus, Chondrites, cf. Chondrites, Gordia, ?Phycodes, ?Helminthopsis, cf. Naviculichnium, Treptichnus, Saerichnites, Megagrapton and ?Paleodictyon (Squamodictyon) are rare. The trace fossils were collected or observed at 17 different localities and represent assemblages belonging to the Nereites ichnofacies (deep-sea flysch deposits with thinly bedded turbidites). They reflect a distal Nereites subfacies (fan-fringe or basin-plain deposits) transitional to a Nereites/Paleodictyon subfacies (proximal fan facies). The trace fossil assemblages indicate an opportunistic style of colonization related to fluctuations in food supply introduced by turbidity currents.  相似文献

An ichnofauna consisting of 18 ichnospecies (one of them new) in 14 ichnogenera are described for the first time from the Middle Jurassic Ridang Formation in Sajia County, South Tibet. The ichnofauna can be subdivided into two ichnoassemblages in ascending stratigraphic order: the Palaeophycus–Megagrapton ichnoassemblage in the lower and middle parts of the Ridang Formation, followed by the CosmorhapheNereites–Paleodictyon ichnoassemblage in the upper Ridang Formation. Overall, the trace fossils occur in a middle–distal turbidite fan sequence, as evidenced by both sedimentological analysis and the composition of the trace fossils. Several subenvironments of the middle–distal fan system have been recognized on the basis of the spatial distribution of the trace fossils. Typically, the channel-fill deposits in the middle part of the turbidite fan lack trace fossils, the interchannel and upper channel-fill (levee) subenvironments of the middle turbidite fan contain abundant facies-crossing trace fossils, in contrast to the distal part of the turbidite fan where deep-water trace fossils are dominant. The ichnofauna is similar to typical flysch ichnofaunas from Europe and North America in characteristics, and is interpreted to represent a typical deep-sea Nereites ichnofacies. The presence of these deep-sea trace fossils therefore would suggest that a continental slope environment existed in southern Tibet during the Middle Jurassic and the study area was located in a slope-abyssal plain setting.  相似文献

The low Lower Cambrian rocks from the Sierra de Córdoba contain one of the best successions in Europe, which consists of well exposed mixed facies with abundant fossil assemblages showing long stratigraphical ranges throughout the Pedroche Formation. These assemblages include diverse Ovetian archaeocyaths, trilobites, small shelly fossils, calcimicrobes, trace fossils and stromatolites. Trace fossils are still poorly known, and thus they are the main objective of this work. Ichnological data are obtained from the Arroyo de Pedroche 1, Arroyo de Pedroche 2 and Puente de Hierro sections. Trace fossils include the ichnogenera Bergaueria, aff. Bilinichnus, Cochlichnus, aff. Cosmorhaphe?, Cylindrichnus, Dactyloidites, Dimorphichnus, Diplichnites, Monocraterion, Palaeophycus, aff. Phycodes, Planolites, Psammichnites, Rusophycus, Skolithos, Torrowangea and Treptichnus, as well as faecal pellets, meniscate trace fossils and others. They are abundant in shales and sandstones, and indicate important changes in the benthic conditions with respect to the underlying Torreárboles Formation. Changes in fossil assemblages within Member I of the Pedroche Formation indicate palaeoecological disruptions, which led to the disappearance of numerous archaeocyath species and the decrease of stromatolite biodiversity. This was followed by dominance of trilobite and brachiopod assemblages, accompanied by trace fossils of the Psammichnites ichnosp. A ichnoassociation. This biotic turnover (Pedroche event) occurred at the lower part of the archaeocyath Zone III, within the Bigotina bivallata biozone. The diagnoses of the ichnospecies Cochlichnus anguineus and Dactyloidites cabanasi are emended.  相似文献

In the Sand?kl? region of the Taurus Range of Turkey, greater than 3000 m in thickness metamorphosed siliciclastics and volcanics (Kocayayla Group) underlies the trilobite-and conodont-bearing Middle-Late Cambrian Hudai Quartzite and Çaltepe Formation. The Kocayayla Group, previously regarded as Infracambrian or Precambrian, is dated for the first time as Early Cambrian on the basis of trace fossils. Cruziana ?fasciculata, C. ?salomonis, ?Cruziana isp., ?Diplichnites isp., Monomorphichnus isp., Petalichnus isp., Rusophycus ?avalonensis, R. ?latus, Arenicolites isp., cf. Altichnus foeyni, Planolites isp., Skolithos isp., and ?Treptichnus isp. have been recognised. These trace fossils are considered Tommotian or younger in age but older than the overlying, trilobite and conodont bearing Middle Cambrian limestones of the Çaltepe Formation. The trace fossils were likely produced by trilobites, suspension feeding annelids and deposit feeding “worms”, probably polychaetes. Sections bearing abundant Skolithos represent the Skolithos ichnofacies, which is typical of high energy environments with loose sandy, well sorted to slightly muddy substrates in intertidal to shallow subtidal zones. The other trace fossils represent the Cruziana ichnofacies, which is typical of subtidal, poorly sorted and soft substrates, from moderate energy to low energy environments between the fairweather and storm wave base. The Kocayayla Group was deposited at an early stage in a shallow marine stable shelf condition. The shelf subsided in a later stage and was affected by normal faults along which mafic and felsic volcanic rocks erupted. The volcanic activity had ceased and a shallow marine clastic sedimentation took place in the final stage of the shelf development. The Kocayayla Group was deformed and metamorphosed before the deposition of the trilobite-bearing Middle-Upper Cambrian succession.  相似文献

The Zabuk Formation of the Derik Group exposed over much of south-eastern Turkey presents a succession composed of shallow marine and fluvial siliciclastic sedimentary rocks. The Lower Cambrian assemblages containing abundant anemone-style trace fossils are known from most major palaeocontinents such as Laurentia, Baltica, and Gondwana. These have possible affinities with semi-infaunal dwelling anemones on siliciclastic mid-latitude shelves of West Gondwana in early Fortunian deposits. Among them is Bergaueria, characterized by plug-shaped burrows as exemplified by Bergaueria perata, that is, a characteristic trace fossil of the Cambrian globally.  相似文献

After taxonomic revision, trace fossils show a similarly explosive diversification in the Ediacaran-Cambrian transition as metazoan body fossils. In shallow-marine deposits of Ediacaran age, trace fossils are horizontal, simple and rare, and display feeding strategies related to exploitation of microbial matgrounds. Equally notable is the absence of arthropod tracks and sinusoidal nematode trails. This situation changed in the Early Cambrian, when a dramatic increase in the diversity of distinct ichnotaxa is associated was followed by the onset of vertical bioturbation and the disappearance of a matground-based ecology (‘‘agronomic revolution’’). On deep sea bottoms, animals have been present already in the Ediacaran, but ichnofaunas were poorly diverse and dominated by the horizontal burrows of undermat miners. As shown by the ichnogenus Oldhamia, this life style continued to be predominant into the Early, and to a lesser extent, Middle Cambrian. Nevertheless, there was an explosive radiation of behavioral programs during the Early Cambrian. When exactly the bioturbational revolution arrived in the deep sea is uncertain. In any case, the Nereites ichnofacies was firmly established in the Early Ordovician. The rich ichnofauna in the Early Cambrian Guachos Formation of northwest Argentina probably marks a first step in this ecological onshore-offshore shift.  相似文献

Abstract

This report documents the discovery of repichnia trace fossils Ptychoplasma (P. excelsum and P. vagans) and Dendroidichnites (D. irregulare); the fodichnia traces ?Ctenopholeus (?C. kutcheri) and cubichnia traces Bergaueria (B. hemishperica) from silty limestones of the Cretaceous Bagh Formation. These trace fossils have significant implications for the depositional facies and the paleo-environmental interpretations of the Bagh Formation, which have long been debated. Previously identified traces of Protovirgularia were also found in association with the newly discovered trace fossils, indicating the coexistence of both wedge and cleft-foot bivalves. The western area of the mainland Gujarat is known for its abundance and diversity of trace fossils. The trace fossil bearing Cretaceous rocks in the region occur as thin irregular detached patches and linear outcrops. Previous studies documenting trace fossil assemblages from the Bagh Formation characterised them as a combination of dwelling, feeding and locomotion forms, with the stratigraphic unit becoming less fossiliferous westward. Trace fossils in this formation have been studied and described by many workers in the surrounding areas; however, ichnofossils described in this study are new to the Bagh Formation in this area. These trace fossils were observed on recently exposed outcrops along road cuts associated with new road construction from Khasra to Mogra village around Kadipani in Mainland Gujarat.  相似文献

The Hongjingshao Formation (Cambrian Series 2, Stage 3) yields abundant, complex trace fossils that have not been systematically investigated up till now. Our detailed ichnological study of the traces from this formation in Malong area, Yunnan, China, recognizes four groups: (1) simple horizontal or sub-horizontal burrows; (2) complex branched burrow systems; (3) arthropod trails and; (4) simple vertical burrows belonging to the Cruziana ichnofacies. A trophic web is reconstructed for the community in Hongjingshao Formation based on both trace and body fossils. The ichnological and sedimentological features of the formation indicate an intertidal setting. The trace fossil assemblage demonstrates that Early Cambrian organisms were able to colonize very shallow marine environments, which further supports the landward expansion of the Early Cambrian ecosystems.  相似文献

Organic-walled microfossils offer important information on the biospheric evolution in pre-Cryogenian and provide biostratigraphic implications for many Proterozoic fossiliferous sequences that are poorly age constrained for the lack of reliable radiometric date. Recently, macroscopic carbonaceous compression fossils have been reported for the first time from the Tonian Shiwangzhuang Formation of the Tumen Group in western Shandong, North China. However, organic-walled microfossils have never been discovered from this formation up till now. To improve our knowledge about Proterozoic biodiversity in North China, we conducted a micropaleontological survey on the argillaceous limestone samples of the Shiwangzhuang Formation, which also contain macroscopic carbonaceous compression fossils, from the Baishicun section in Anqiu, western Shandong, North China. Our investigation shows that the Shiwangzhuang microfossil assemblage is dominated by smooth-walled sphaeromorphic acritarchs and cyanobacterium-like filaments and relatively low abundance of other acritarchs, including 16 taxa, such as Polysphaeroides filliformis, Ostiana microcystis, Simia annulare, ?Jacutianema sp., Arctacellularia tetragonala, Pellicularia tenera, Polythrichoides lineatus, and Navifusa actinomorpha. The Shiwangzhuang organic-walled microfossil assemblage, although consisting of long-ranging and not age diagnostic taxa, is consistent with a Tonian age suggested by macroscopic carbonaceous compression fossils, including the Chuaria-Tawuia and Sinosabellidites-Protoarenicola-Pararenicola assemblages, revealed from the same fossiliferous horizon of the Shiwangzhuang Formation and by organic-walled microfossil assemblage, including the late Mesoproterozoic to Tonian index fossil Trachyhystrichosphaera aimika, from the underlying Tongjiazhuang Formation. However, it is also worth noting that a Cryogenian or Ediacaran age cannot be completely excluded based just on the Shiwangzhuang microfossils because of their limited biostratigraphic utility.  相似文献

The oldest known estuarine bivalve assemblage is documented from the Lower Ordovician (upper Arenig-lower Llanvirn) Alto del Cóndor Formation, which crops out in the Cordillera Oriental of northwestern Argentina. This unit displays most of the diagnostic sedimentary attributes of estuarine environments. Biotic components include low-diversity trace fossils and a peculiar bivalve fauna consisting of the new genera Konduria, Pseudoredonia, and Pucamya, and the new species Redonia condorensis. This constitutes the earliest known occurrence of bivalves in brackish waters, suggesting that the capability of this clade to colonize estuarine environments developed early in their radiation.  相似文献

Abstract: The Westbury Formation (Rhaetian) beds of Westbury Garden Cliff, Westbury‐on‐Severn, west of Gloucester, Britain, show an unusual combination of features. Both deep water and emergent characteristics are present within the sediments and the trace fossils. The ichnoassemblage consists of abundant Selenichnites, Planolites beverlyensis and Lockeia with rarer Oniscoidichnus, Chondrites, Rhizocorallium irregulare, Taenidium serpentium, an unusual form of Walcottia and Merostomichnites‐like traces. These trace fossils display an interesting relationship with the sediments: low‐energy Cruziana ichnofacies is found within high‐energy sandstones. The sandstones are interbedded with laminated mudstones, apparently deposited in deep water, but some aspects of the ichnoassemblage, preservation and sedimentation indicate shallower water. One new trace fossil, Radichnus allingtona igen. et isp. nov., closely resembles the traces of modern fiddler crabs and imply emergence, by analogy. This ichnofauna is similar to early stage disaster colonisation in recent experiments in Long Island Sound (south of Connecticut, USA) and with storm‐influenced deposits within the Cardium Formation (Seebe, Alberta, Canada). This indicates a lagoonal environment with influxes of sand and oxygen. Total organic carbon levels were found to fluctuate greatly between stratigraphic layers but remained relatively high. This implies low oxygen conditions. The abundance of sulphur (in pyrite) also supports an interpretation of anoxic conditions, and low sedimentation rates within the shale layers. A restricted shallow basin or lagoonal environment is proposed for the palaeoenvironment, with fluctuating oxygen influencing diversity.  相似文献

Trace fossils provide the only records of Early Cretaceous birds from many parts of the world. The identification of traces from large avian track-makers is made difficult given their overall similarity in size and tridactyly in comparison with traces of small non-avian theropods. Reanalysis of Wupus agilis from the Early Cretaceous (Aptian-Albian) Jiaguan Formation, one of a small but growing number of known avian-pterosaur track assemblages, of southeast China determines that these are the traces of a large avian track-maker, analogous to extant herons. Wupus, originally identified as the trace of a small non-avian theropod track-maker, is therefore similar in both footprint and trackway characteristics to the Early Cretaceous (Albian) large avian trace Limiavipes curriei from western Canada, and Wupus is reassigned to the ichnofamily Limiavipedidae. The reanalysis of Wupus reveals that it and Limiavipes are distinct from similar traces of small to medium-sized non-avian theropods (Irenichnites, Columbosauripus, Magnoavipes) based on their relatively large footprint length to pace length ratio and higher mean footprint splay, and that Wupus shares enough characters with Limiavipes to be reassigned to the ichnofamily Limiavipedidae. The ability to discern traces of large avians from those of small non-avian theropods provides more data on the diversity of Early Cretaceous birds. This analysis reveals that, despite the current lack of body fossils, large wading birds were globally distributed in both Laurasia and Gondwana during the Early Cretaceous.  相似文献

Terrestrial and marine invertebrate organisms both leave records of their activities in the sediment in the form of trace fossils, at least during certain stages of their ontogeny. In contrast, trace fossils produced by vertebrate organisms are scarce, although terrestrial trace fossils provide exclusive insights into the social behaviour of their producers. In the marine realm, vertebrate trace fossils are relatively rare, difficult to identify and problematic to interpret. However, in certain settings, observations on serendipitously preserved and exposed trace fossils can shed light on the predatory behaviour of marine vertebrates. In Miocene outer shelf to nearshore sandstones of the Taliao Formation in NE Taiwan, large numbers of bowl‐shaped trace fossils can be observed. Morphology and size range (diameter typically 10–30 cm, average depth around 10 cm) of these trace fossils agree well with feeding traces of modern stingrays, and the trace fossil Piscichnus waitemata, which has been attributed to bottom feeding rays. Stingrays direct a jet of water from their mouths to excavate a bowl‐shaped pit to expose their prey. In the material filling the excavated bowl, broken pieces of two other common trace fossils, Ophiomorpha and Schaubcylindrichnus, are often found, and in a number of cases, vertical shafts of Ophiomorpha surrounded by dispersed pieces of wall material have been observed. In contrast, surrounding sediment rarely contains this kind of broken pieces of wall material. These observations clearly indicate that stingrays specifically targeted the producers of the trace fossils: thalassinoid crustaceans and worms, respectively. The targeted predation of these relatively deep burrowers furthermore suggests that the rays used their electroreceptive organs to locate the prey; as such, direct targeting of buried prey only based on olfactory senses has been shown to be ineffective in experiments with extant myliobatiform rays.  相似文献

Endobenthic animals, which reside within the sea bottom, include stationary suspension feeders, mobile deposit feeders and both stationary and mobile carnivores. Their activities, especially with regard to dwelling, feeding, walking/crawling and resting/nesting, are recorded as trace fossils.Abundance, diversity and density of some kinds of trace fossils allow interpretation of the population strategies of the trace-makers in terms of opportunistic (r-selected) and equilibrium (K-selected) strategies. Opportunistic ichnotaxa tend to be faciesbreaking traces, which are highly localized in low-diversity, high-density trace fossil associations in rocks representing environmental extremes (e.g., variable salinities, harsh temperatures, low oxygen levels or shifting substrates). Equilibrium ichnotaxa usually are restricted to particular sedimentary facies and are characteristic of high-diversity, low-dominance trace fossil associations in sediments reflecting stable, predictable environmental conditions. The most important environmental factors influencing the composition of trace fossil assemblages in marine settings are bathymetry, substrate, oxygen and hydrodynamic energy. The four factors are closely interrelated, because as water depth increases, there is a general decrease in sediment grain size and hydrodynamic energy of the depositional environment. As depth below the water—sediment interface increases, the firmness of the sediment (due to compaction and dewatering) increases and the oxygen content of interstitial waters drops drastically.Marine ichnofacies are largely substrate-controlled. Soupgrounds are water-saturated, incompetent substrates typified by highly compressed and usually unidentifiable burrows. Softgrounds commonly contain numerous distinctive burrows and are zoned bathymetrically by the Skolithos, Cruziana, Zoophycos and Nereites Ichnofacies. Firmgrounds are characterized by stiff, compacted sediments, in which traces of the Glossifungites Ichnofacies are excavated. Hardgrounds are cemented substrates, in which bioerosion traces of the Trypanites Ichnofacies are bored. Woodgrounds are woody materials that have been exposed to the sea and bored by bivalves, which produce characteristic traces of the Teredolites Ichnofacies. Tiering of endobenthic communities is common and is related to substrate preference of the burrowers and oxygen stratification of interstitial waters.  相似文献

U-shaped burrows identified as the trace fossil Arenicolites occur in the Cambro-Ordovician Cow Head Group, a series of thin-bedded limestones interbedded with graptolitic shale and thick beds of limestone breccia and conglomerate. The lithology, limestone petrography, and trace fossils indicate deposition on a submarine slope of a slowly submerging carbonate platform. The limestone bed containing Arenicolites probably represents a period of slow deposition. The steeply inclined U-shaped burrows are assumed to have been formed by polychaete worms of the family Mochtyellidae which thrived in an argillaceous carbonate mud bottom of a carbonate platform slope, in depths exceeding 200 m. Although Arenicolites is believed to denote a shallow-water environment, its presence in the Cow Head extends the ecological niche of the Arenicolites-producing organisms into the outer shelf and continental slope. The domichnia of suspension feeders thus extends from shallow- to deep-water environments.  相似文献

Various trace fossils from the Hassberge Formation and the Löwenstein Formation (Middle Keuper, Upper Triassic) of the Haßberge region are described. Twenty-three different forms have been identified, 17 of which are named, includingCruziana pascens n. isp.,Lockeia cunctator n. isp., andRusophycus versans n. isp.Lockeia siliquaria James, 1879,L. amygdaloides (Seilacher, 1953),L. triangulichnus Kim, 1994, andL. elongata (Yang, 1984) are revised and synonymized under the oldest available name,L. siliquaria James, 1879.Rusophycus eutendorfensis (Linck, 1942) andR. carbonarius Dawson, 1864 are revised. The diagnosis ofPolykladichnus Fürsich, 1981 is emended, and a diagnosis forHelminthoidichnites Fitch, 1850 is given for the first time. Among the described ichnotaxa,Skolithos ispp.,Rusophycus carbonarius, andTaenidium barretti are the most common forms. The trace fossil association is typical of theScoyenia ichnofacies, which indicates non-marine, periodically or completely inundated environments, such as floodplains and lake margins. Two palaeoichnocoenoses are identified. One ichnocoenosis, dominated byCruziana problematica, cf.Polykladichnus isp., andSkolithos isp. B characterizes margins of trough cross-bedded sandstones. Another ichnocoenosis, dominated byRusophycus versans n. isp.,Taenidium barretti,Scoyenia gracilis andSkolithos isp. A is related to ephemeral lake deposits. Taxonomic recommendations for the use of hitherto described and figured invertebrate Keuper trace fossils from Germany are given.  相似文献
