Many physicians and others are convinced that there is a pressing need for more discussion and more agreement concerning what ought to be the scope of medicine in today''s society. At the present moment, there is no general consensus either within or without the profession. Yet if the responsibility is ever to be met, its scope must be recognized and somehow defined. The editors of California Medicine propose to provide a forum in this journal for discussion of the scope and responsibility of medicine. This is a forum with a purpose, and so far as is known, an innovation in medical journalism. The forum is initiated with the statements beginning on the following page. Readers and others are invited to submit their views constructively and succinctly. As many of these as space permits will be published in future issues of California Medicine as a continuation of this forum. At an appropriate time all the material will be collated and, if feasible, the distillate will be prepared in the form of a statement on “The Scope and Responsibility of Medicine” to be submitted to the Council of the California Medical Association for its consideration. The statements which follow are the concisely expressed views of distinguished scholars, educators, statesmen and practitioners in the health field. It is hoped their views on this timely and important subject will provoke thought and comment among the readers of this journal  相似文献

Readers were invited to take part in a continuation of the forum in succeeding issues. Following are three contributions selected from those received to date. Others will be published in the months ahead. If you have thoughts on the subject, just address them to the editors of California Medicine, 693 Sutter Street, San Francisco, California 94102. For the past several months the editors of California Medicine have conducted a forum in this journal on “Relevance for Today and Tomorrow in Medical Education.” The participants were from widely different backgrounds and represented many points of view. This statement is a distillate from published and unpublished material contributed to the forum. If it proves useful to any who may be concerned with new developments in medical education it will have served its purpose.  相似文献

Students of today question the relevance of much of their formal education. In medical schools the concern is particularly with the relevance of the educational experience to the professional commitment in modern society. To engender discussion of the subject, California Medicine in its January issue printed eight essays by authors known to have keen interest in the subject.Readers in California and elsewhere are invited to take part in a continuation of the forum in succeeding issues. The following are contributions selected from those received to date. Others will be published in the months ahead. At an appropriate time the material will be collated and, if feasible, the distillate will be prepared in the form of a statement. If you have thoughts on the subject, just address them to the editors of California Medicine, 693 Sutter Street, San Francisco, California, 94102. Simazine, a member of the triazine group, is registered in California for weed control in soils where a wide range of crops will be (or are) planted. The health risks from simazine use in California were recently assessed by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (CDPR) for all potential (acute and long-term) exposure scenarios relevant to Californian residents and workers. The results of the CDPR risk assessment indicate that current exposure levels in many of the scenarios under consideration are not health protective for the people in California. The main objective of the present summary report (i.e., case study) was two-fold, both for offering a forum to advance further scientific discussion: (1) to highlight the toxicity and exposure data as well as the assumptions used in the CDPR simazine risk assessment and then (2) to systematically requalify the uncertainties and complexities involved in terms of the toxicity and exposure appraisals given in that risk assessment. In both attempts, the focus was more on residential exposures for young children and women of child-bearing age in that simazine was reportedly seen to exhibit neuroendocrine effects across a variety of species.

We have studied the relationship between chromosomal forum domains and looped domains in the cut locus of Drosophila melanogaster . Forum domains were earlier detected by separation in pulsed-field gels of 50-150 kb chromosomal DNA fragments obtained after spontaneous non-random degradation of chromosomes. We have localized the boundary region where cleavage sites are scattered between two forum domains in the regulatory region of the cut locus. We have sequenced a 13 kb region spanning few kilobases from distal domain, the boundary region and part of the proximal forum domain where several scaffold associated regions (SARs) were observed. We conclude that forum domains and looped domains are physically different types of domains and belong to different levels of organization in eukaryotic chromosomes. The boundary region between the neighboring forum domains in the cut locus possesses the Doc element insertion and a micro-satellite stretch and thus might remind a small island of heterochromatin and correspond to so-called intercalary heterochromatin that is known to be located in the 7B1-2 band where the major part of the cut locus is reside.  相似文献
