Common centaury (Centaurium erythraea Rafn.) is a plant species that can inhabit saline soils. It is known as a plant with high spontaneous regeneration potential in vitro. In the present work we evaluated shoots and roots salinity tolerance of non-transformed and three AtCKX transgenic centaury lines to graded NaCl concentrations (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 mM) in vitro. Overexpression of AtCKX genes in transgenic centaury plants resulted in an altered cytokinins (CKs) profile leading to a decline of bioactive CK levels and, at the same time, increased contents of storage CK forms, inactive CK forms and/or CK nucleotides. Significant increment of fresh shoot weight was obtained in shoots of non-transformed and AtCKX1 transgenic line only on medium supplemented with 50 mM NaCl. However two analysed AtCKX2 transgenic lines reduced shoot growth at all NaCl concentrations. In general, centaury roots showed higher tolerance to salinity than shoots. Non-transformed and AtCKX1 transgenic lines tolerated up to 100 mM NaCl without change in frequency of regeneration and number of regenerated plants. Roots of two analysed AtCKX2 transgenic lines showed different regeneration potential under salt stress. Regeneration of transgenic AtCKX2-26 shoots even at 200 mM NaCl was recorded. Salinity stress response of centaury shoots and roots was also evaluated at biochemical level. Free proline, malondialdehyde and hydrogen peroxide content as well as antioxidative enzymes activities were investigated in shoots and roots after 1, 2, 4 and 8 weeks. In general, adition of NaCl in culture medium elevated all biochemical parameters in centaury shoots and in roots. Considering that all analysed AtCKX transgenic centaury lines showed altered salt tolerance to graded NaCl concentrations in vitro it can be assumed that CKs might be involved in plant defence to salt stress conditions.  相似文献

A pot experiment was carried out to explore the role of glycinebetaine (GB) as foliar spray foliar on two pea (Pisum sativum L.) varieties (Pea 09 and Meteor Fsd) under saline and non-saline conditions. Thirty-two-day-old plants were subjected to two levels 0 and 150 mM of NaCl stress. Salt treatment was applied in full strength Hoagland’s nutrient solution. Three levels 0, 5 and 10 mM of GB were applied as foliar treatment on 34-day-old pea plants. After 2 weeks of foliar treatment with GB data for various growth and physiochemical attributes were recorded. Rooting-medium applied salt (150 mM NaCl) stress decreased growth, photosynthesis, chlorophyll, chlorophyll fluorescence and soluble protein contents, while increasing the activities of enzymatic (POD and CAT) and non-enzymatic (ascorbic acid and total phenolics) antioxidant enzymes. Foliar application of GB decreased root and shoot Na+ under saline conditions, while increasing shoot dry matter, root length, root fresh weight, stomatal conductance (g s), contents of seed ascorbic acid, leaf phenolics, and root and shoot Ca2+ contents. Of three GB (0, 5, 10 mM) levels, 10 mM proved to be more effective in mitigating the adverse effects of salinity stress. Overall, variety Pea 09 showed better performance in comparison to those of var. Meteor Fsd under both normal and salinity stress conditions. GB-induced modulation of seed ascorbic acid, leaf phenolics, g s, and root Ca2+ values might have contributed to the increased plant biomass, reduction of oxidative stress, increased osmotic adjustment and better photosynthetic performance of pea plants under salt stress.  相似文献

A pot study was conducted to determine the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi (Glomus mosseae and Paraglomus occultum) and salt (NaCl) stress on growth, photosynthesis, root morphology and ionic balance of citrus (Citrus tangerine Hort. ex Tanaka) seedlings. Eighty-five-day-old seedlings were exposed to 100 mM NaCl for 60 days to induce salt stress. Mycorrhizal colonization of citrus seedlings was not affected by salinity when associated with P. occultum, but significantly decreased when with G. mosseae. Compared with the non-mycorrhizal controls, mycorrhizal seedlings generally had greater plant height, stem diameter, shoot, root and total plant biomass, photosynthetic rate, transpiration rate and stomatal conductance under the 0 and 100 mM NaCl stresses. Root length, root projected area and root surface area were also higher in the mycorrhizal than in the non-mycorrhizal seedlings, but higher root volume in seedlings with G. mosseae. Leaf Na+ concentrations were significantly decreased, but leaf K+ and Mg2+ concentrations and the K+/Na+ ratio were increased when seedlings with both G. mosseae and P. occultum. Under the salt stress, Na+ concentrations were increased but K+ concentrations decreased in the mycorrhizal seedlings. Under the salt stress, Ca2+ concentrations were increased in the seedlings with P. occultum or without AM fungi (AMF), but decreased with G. mosseae. Ratios of both Ca2+/Na+ and Mg2+/Na+ were also increased in seedlings with G. mosseae under the non-salinity stress, while only the Mg2+/Na+ ratio was increased in seedlings with P. occultum under the salt stress. Our results suggested that salt tolerance of citrus seedlings could be enhanced by associated AMF with better plant growth, root morphology, photosynthesis and ionic balance.  相似文献

Adaptation to salinity of a semi-arid inhabitant plant, henna, is studied. The salt tolerance mechanisms are evaluated in the belief that gas exchange (water vapor and CO2) should play a key role on its adaptation to salt stress because of the strong evaporation conditions and soil water deficit in its natural area of distribution. We grow henna plants hydroponically under controlled climate conditions and expose them to control (0 mM NaCl), and two levels of salinity; medium (75 mM NaCl) and high (150 mM NaCl). Relative growth rate (RGR), biomass production, whole plant and leaf structure and ultrastructure adaptation, gas exchange, chlorophyll fluorescence, nutrients location in leaf tissue and its balance in the plant are studied. RGR and total biomass decreased as NaCl concentration increased in the nutrient solution. At 75 mM NaCl root biomass was not affected by salinity and RGR reached similar values to control plants at the end of the experiment. At this salinity level henna plant responded to salinity decreasing shoot to root ratio, increasing leaf specific mass (LSM) and intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE), and accumulating high concentrations of Na+ and Cl in leaves and root. At 150 mM NaCl growth was severely reduced but plants reached the reproductive phase. At this salinity level, no further decrease in shoot to root ratio or increase in LSM was observed, but plants increased iWUE, maintaining water status and leaf and root Na+ and Cl concentrations were lower than expected. Moreover, plants at 150 mM NaCl reallocated carbon to the root at the expense of the shoot. The effective PSII quantum yield [Y(II)] and the quantum yield of non-regulated energy dissipation [Y(NO)] were recovered over time of exposure to salinity. Overall, iWUE seems to be determinant in the adaptation of henna plant to high salinity level, when morphological adaptation fails.  相似文献

Soil salinity is mainly caused by excessive use of fertilizers and the use of poor quality water, and adversely affected crop growth especially when grown in protected environments. Soil salinity causes salt stress in plants, which inhibits plant growth, leading to morphological, metabolic and physiological changes. Though it is a major problem occurs more frequently, there is less information on the behavior of calla lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica) under these conditions, and most studies are conducted with other species of the genus Zantesdeschia. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate ecophysiological, biochemical and anatomical growth responses of calla lily plants to salt stress. Rhizomes were grown in trays containing coconut fiber as a substrate and treated with 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100 mM NaCl to induce stress. A decrease in plant height was observed, as well as in the number of tillers and leaves, main root length, fresh and dry matter of the shoot and root system. A reduction in photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance and transpiration rate was observed at 60 days. However, after 90 days, the photosynthetic rate was unchanged, with increased stomatal conductance and transpiration rate for plants exposed to 75 mM NaCl. Salt stress caused a higher accumulation of carbohydrates in shoots and roots. Thus, high concentrations of NaCl affect the development of calla lily, indicating that this species is susceptible to salt stress.  相似文献

The possible use of in vitro shoot morphogenesis and shoot apex culture to evaluate salt tolerance in cultivated tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) has been analyzed, using two cultivars with similar salt tolerance, Pera and Hellfrucht frühstamm (HF). The effect of salt on shoot regeneration was studied by culturing leaf explants on media supplemented with 0, 43, 86, 129 and 172 mM NaCl. The presence of NaCl in the regeneration media at 86 mM strongly inhibited shoot regeneration in the cultivar HF, but not in Pera. However, the substitution of NaCl by mannitol, maintaining the same water potential in the culture media, decreased the regeneration percentage in Pera but did not affect HF. Shoot apices of both cultivars were also subcultured at 6-week intervals, for 4 subcultures, at the same NaCl concentrations as used in the previous experiment, and the shoot growth, leaf and root number, rooted shoot and shoot necrosis were recorded at the end of each subculture. Root formation was the parameter most affected by salt in both cultivars, Pera being more sensitive than HF. The substitution of NaCl by mannitol significantly increased the percentage of rooted shoots in Pera after four subcultures, and slightly decreased this percentage in HF. Shoot necrosis was only observed in the last subculture at NaCl higher than 86 mM, the percentage of necrotic shoots being higher in Pera than in HF (75% and 45%, respectively). The lack of agreement between the results obtained with the in vitro tests, e.g., adventitious shoot formation and growth of apical stem sections, suggests that this approach may not be a reliable tool to evaluate salt tolerance in cultivated tomato. Abstract

Pulsed magnetic field (PMF) effects on soybean plant regeneration under salt stress conditions were investigated. Seedlings were raised from seeds pre-treated with 0.1, 1.0, 10.0 and 100.0 Hz PMF. Cotyledonary nodal (CN) explants from PMF exposed and unexposed seedlings were cultured in media containing different concentrations of NaCl (0, 10, 20, 30 and 40 mM). In CN explants from unexposed seedlings, increasing salt concentration progressively suppressed the regeneration and development of shoots and roots. Plantlets were regenerated only on medium containing 0, 10, 20 and 30 mM NaCl. The highest dose of NaCl (40 mM) failed to induce shoot formation and strongly reduced the number of roots which also exhibited reduced length. Cotyledonary nodal explants from PMF exposed seedlings, cultured at 10, 20 and 30 mM NaCl, exhibited a higher frequency of shoot and root regeneration, as well as a higher number and length of shoots and roots compared to unexposed ones, with 1.0 Hz frequency resulting the most efficient in promoting regeneration. At 40 mM NaCl, the promotive effect of different PMFs frequencies was related to the induction of a greater number of roots and the enhancement of root length. Our results suggest that PMF pre-treatment could help the regeneration of soybean under salt stressed condition.  相似文献

A split-root growth system was employed to evaluate the effect of NaCl on nodule formation by soybean (Glycine max L. Merr. cv Davis). By applying the salinity stress and rhizobial inoculum to only one-half the root system, the effects of salinity on shoot growth were eliminated in the nodulation process. Rhizobium colonization of inoculated root surfaces was not affected by the salt treatments (0.0, 26.6, 53.2, and 79.9 millimolar NaCl). While shoot dry weight remained unaffected by the treatments, total shoot N declined from 1.26 grams N per pot at 0.0 millimolar NaCl to 0.44 grams N per pot at 79.9 millimolar NaCl. The concentration of N in the shoot decreased from 3.75% N (0.0 millimolar NaCl) to 1.26% N at 79.9 millimolar NaCl. The decrease in shoot N was attributed to a sharp reduction in nodule number and dry weight. Nodule number and weight were reduced by approximately 50% at 26.6 millimolar NaCl, and by more than 90% at 53.2 and 79.9 millimolar NaCl. Nodule development, as evidenced by the average weight of a nodule, was not as greatly affected by salt as was nodule number. Total nitrogenase activity (C2H2 reduction) decreased proportionally in relation to nodule number and dry weight. Specific nitrogenase activity, however, was less affected by salinity and was not depressed significantly until 79.9 millimolar NaCl. In a second experiment, isolates of Rhizobium japonicum from nodules formed at 79.9 millimolar NaCl did not increase nodulation of roots under salt stress compared to nodule isolates from normal media (0.0 millimolar NaCl). Salt was applied (53.2 millimolar NaCl) to half root systems at 0, 4, 12, and 96 hours from inoculation in a third experiment. By delaying the application of salt for 12 hours, an increase in nodule number, nodule weight, and shoot N was observed. Nodule formation in the 12- and 96-hour treatments was, however, lower than the control. The early steps in nodule initiation are, therefore, extremely sensitive to even low concentrations of NaCl. The sensitivity is not related to rhizobial survival and is probably due to the salt sensitivity of root infection sites.  相似文献

The present study investigates the role of salicylic acid (SA) in inducing plant tolerance to salinity. The application of 0.1 mM SA to tomato [Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.] plants via root drenching provided protection against 150 mM or 200 mM NaCl stress. SA treated plants had greater survival and relative shoot growth rate compared to untreated plants when exposed to salt stress. At 200 mM salt, shoot growth rates were approximately 4 times higher in SA treated plants than untreated plants. Application of SA increased photosynthetic rates in salt stressed plants and may have contributed to the enhanced survival. Transpiration rates and stomatal conductance were also significantly higher in SA treated plants under saline stress conditions. SA application reduced electrolyte leakage by 44% in 150 mM NaCl and 32% in 200 mM NaCl, compared to untreated plants, indicating possible protection of integrity of the cellular membrane. Beneficial effects of SA in saline conditions include sustaining the photosynthetic/transpiration activity and consequently growth, and may have contributed to the reduction or total avoidance of necrosis. SA, when used in appropriate concentrations, alleviates salinity stress without compromising the plants ability for growth under a favourable environment.  相似文献

Salinization of agricultural land is an increasing problem. Because of their high tolerance to salinity, Salicornia spp. could become models to study salt tolerance; they also represent promising saline crops. The salinity-growth response curve for Salicornia dolichostachya Moss was evaluated at 12 salt concentrations in a hydroponic study in a greenhouse and at 5 different seawater dilutions in an outside setting. Salt concentrations ranged between 0 mM and 500 mM NaCl (≈seawater salinity). Plants were grown for six weeks and morphological and physiological adaptations in different tissues were evaluated.S. dolichostachya had its growth optimum at 300 mM NaCl in the root medium, independent of the basis on which growth was expressed. The relative growth rate (RGR) in the greenhouse experiment was comparable with RGR-values in the outdoor growth experiment. Leaf succulence and stem diameter had the highest values at the growth optimum (300 mM NaCl). Carbon isotope discrimination (δ13C) decreased upon salinity. S. dolichostachya maintained a lower leaf sap osmotic potential relative to the external solution over the entire salinity range, this was mainly accomplished by accumulation of Na+ and Cl. Glycine betaine concentrations did not significantly differ between the treatments. Na+:K+-ratio and K+-selectivity in the shoots increased with increasing salinity, both showed variation between expanding and expanded shoot tissue. We conclude that S. dolichostachya was highly salt tolerant and showed salt requirement for optimal growth. Future growth experiments should be done under standardized conditions and more work at the tissue and cellular level needs to be done to identify the underlying mechanisms of salt tolerance.  相似文献

Two tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) lines differing in Ca2+ use efficiency (Ca2+ use efficient line 113 and Ca2+ use inefficient line 67) were subjected to salinity treatments in two separate experiments to determine whether they differed in salt tolerance. In experiment I, three NaCl and two CaCl2 treatments were imposed. The Na+ concentrations were 1.1, 100 and 150 mM and the Ca2+ concentrations were either 1.51 or 10 mM. In experiment II, one NaCl and three Ca2+ treatments (as CaCl2 or CaSO4) were imposed. The treatments consisted of 150 mM NaCl at either 1.51 mM CaCl2, 10 mM CaCl2, or 10 mM CaSO4. Response to treatments was determined by analysis of growth parameters (shoot and root dry weights, plant height, and root length). Shoot and root dry weight, and root length were depressed as salinity increased in plants lacking additional Ca2+. No significant differences in salt tolerance were detected between the two tomato lines after 24 d of salinity treatment. An important finding of this study was that root growth and length appeared to be more sensitive to the effect of CaCI2 treatment alone and to the effects of CaCl2 × NaCl treatments. This suggests that over the long term, both root growth and root length may be more sensitive indicators of salinity effects than shoots. Supplemental CaCl2 had no ameliorative effect on NaCl stress in shoot growth. The inability of Ca2+ to counter Cl entry or toxicity may account for the lack of amelioration. Additional Ca2+ as CaSO4 improved shoot growth of plants exposed to 150 mM NaCl. In contrast, root growth and length were improved by 10 mM Ca2+ as either CaCl2 or CaSO4.  相似文献

The effects of salinity and its combination with silicon (Si) were studied in ‘Nova’ mandarin plants grafted on Citrus aurantium L. or Swingle Citrumelo to determine: (1) which combination is more tolerant to salt stress and (2) the impact of Si in limiting the harmful effects of salinity. Six groups of plants were grown in a greenhouse for 120 days and irrigated with: (1) 50 % Hoagland’s solution (Control), (2) 50 % Hoagland’s solution plus 80 mM NaCl (NaCl), and (3) 50 % Hoagland’s solution plus 80 mM NaCl plus 0.5 mM Si (NaCl + Si). Grafted plants exhibited accumulation of Na and Cl in their tissues following exposure to salinity. The ability of S. Citrumelo to retain the toxic ions in the roots in corroboration with the observation that the dry weights (DWs) of S. Citrumelo tissues were not influenced by NaCl treatment indicates that this rootstock is more tolerant to salinity. Silicon supplementation into the saline medium promoted the accumulation of toxic ions, whereas, when compared to NaCl treatment, it increased the DW of S. Citrumelo roots. Mineral concentrations were significantly affected by rootstock, treatment, and their interaction with S. Citrumelo, which presented better nutrient status than Sour Orange; and Si which differed depending on citrus tissue. It appears that S. Citrumelo rootstock is the most tolerant for ‘Nova’ mandarin plants under salinity, whereas salt tolerance in grafted citrus plants is not improved by Si application, indicating that the beneficial role of Si depends on the cultivar or rootstock–scion combinations.  相似文献

The growth responses to salinity of seedlings of six populations of Stylosanthes humilis from three ecogeographic regions of Northeast Brazil, characterized by wet or semi-arid climate, were analyzed following 28 days in solution cultures at concentrations of 0, 40, 80 and 120 mM NaCl. Root and shoot mass, shoot length and characters of foliar damage (number of leaves with chlorosis and necrosis) of the populations were more affected by increasing NaCl than numbers of leaves and branches and root length. Although S. humilis has been considered a salt sensitive legume, significant differences in salt tolerance between populations were found. The estimated concentrations which reduced shoot dry mass by 50 and 25% varied between populations from 84 to 108 and from 49 to 83 mM NaCl, respectively. Salt tolerance in S. humilis during the initial growth stage was lower than the reported one for germination. With one exception, populations from semi-arid climate with saline soils showed higher salt tolerance than those from non saline soils. The results suggest that salt tolerance in these populations is mainly associated with the occurrence of salinity in the soil of their provenance.  相似文献

Production of the faba bean in semi-arid and coastal areas maybe limited by the salt sensitivity of faba bean symbiosis. Accordingly,this study was done to analyse the effects of salt on the effectivesymbiosis of faba bean (Vicia faba L. var. minor cultivar Alborea)and salt-tolerant Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar. viciae strainGRA19. After 4 weeks of growth, the nutrient solutions weresupplemented with 50, 75 and 100 mM NaCl for 21 d. Plants wereharvested four times at weekly intervals, beginning at 4 weeks.Vicia faba tolerated low (50 mM NaCl) but not higher levels(75 and 100 mM NaCl) of salt stress. Salinity affected shootgrowth more than root growth. At the end of the culture, thetotal nitrogen content in the shoot was affected more than plantgrowth; conversely, in the root, growth was influenced morethan total nitrogen content. In nodules, nitrogen fixation (acetylenereduction activity) was more sensitive to salinity than ammoniumassimilation (glutamine synthetase and glutamate synthase). Potato plants grown in vitro were subjected to different salt stresses by providing the salts NaCl, Na2SO4, MgCl2 and MgSO4 in different concentrations up to 300 mM. Salinity greatly affected the survival and the rooting of the plants. Shoot and root growth decreased with increasing salt concentrations. Under mild stress conditions, i.e. in conditions where the plant is able to adapt to the stress, the observed decrease was dependent upon the salt used. Under severe stress conditions, however, the decrease of the shoot and root growth was independent of the nature of the ions.  相似文献

The role of spore associated bacteria of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) in improving plant growth and alleviating salt stress is a potential area to explore. In the present study, 22 bacteria isolated from the spore walls of AMF were identified to contain 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase. These were tested for their ability to improve seed germination and alleviate salt stress in the early growth of maize. Among the isolates, 19 bacteria that were able to grow at 4?% NaCl were used for germination assay. Two bacteria and seven bacteria significantly improved maize seed germination at 100 mM NaCl and 200 mM NaCl, respectively. Based on the presence of plant growth promoting (PGP) characters and the ability to improve seed germination, five strains were chosen for further experiments. At 0 mM NaCl, all the strains were able to increase maize shoot and root growth significantly. At 25 mM NaCl, except for Bacillus aryabhattai S210B15, all the strains were able to increase shoot and root growth significantly. At 50 mM NaCl, Bacillus aryabhattai S110B3 and B. aryabhattai S210B15 significantly improved shoot length, whereas, Pseudomonas koreensis S2CB35 and B. aryabhattai S210B15 significantly increased root length. Although salinity increased ethylene production in maize, bacterial inoculation significantly reduced the ethylene level at 0, 25 and 50 mM NaCl. Among the five strains, only P. koreensis S2CB35 showed the presence of PGP functional traits of nifH, acdS and nodA genes.  相似文献

In order to quickly and efficiently evaluate the salt tolerance of alfalfa, salinity tests were conducted on Medicago sativa L. var. australis, var. icon, var. loi, and var. gea, under in vitro conditions. Pregerminated seeds of four varieties were subjected to five different NaCl concentrations (0, 50, 100, 150, 200 mM). The influence of saline stress was estimated on the basis of survival percentage, growth parameters, and electrolyte leakage. The seedlings surviving on the medium enriched with salt at the highest concentration were presumed to be tolerant and represented the mother plants for the production of in vitro clones. In the following step, the clones were evaluated in vitro to confirm the salt tolerance. The influence of mild salt stress (75 mM NaCl) on the growth parameters of selected clones was examined. At the end of this trial, the proline accumulation and sodium content in alfalfa shoots were also quantified. The results suggest an increased level of proline promotes salt tolerance. Medicago sativa L. var. icon is highly tolerant in comparison with the other varieties tested. In vitro selection of M. sativa L. varieties on salt-containing media allowed us to obtain clones with increased salinity tolerance.  相似文献

The present investigation envisaged revealing the role of exogenous application of ascorbic acid in increasing resistance against NaCl stress. Shoot apices from 60-d-old, in vitro-grown plants of two commercially important cultivars of Solanum tuberosum L., cvs. Desiree and Cardinal, were inoculated on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 0.5 mM ascorbic acid for 72 h as a pretreatment. Pretreated and non-pretreated shoot apices were transferred to MS medium containing different concentrations of NaCl (0–140 mM; eight treatments). Results were recorded for morphological (shoot length, shoot number, root length, root number, and number of nodes) and biochemical features (protein, peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase activities) after 60 d of salt treatment. Similarly, 60-d-old, well-proliferated callus cultures were also pretreated with ascorbic acid for 24 h and transferred to an optimized callus proliferation medium containing different concentrations of salt. Results were recorded after 60 d of salt treatment for percentage relative fresh weight growth and biochemical parameters. Salinity severely inhibited all the growth parameters in both the cultivars. Pretreatment with ascorbic acid to both salt-treated plants and callus cultures showed significant differences with respect to almost all of the growth and biochemical parameters studied. Protein content as well as catalase and superoxide dismutase activities increased significantly in both the cultivars, although peroxidase activity showed a decreasing trend in ascorbic acid-pretreated plants as well as callus cultures.  相似文献

As two newly important components for plant tissue culture, the impacts of iron nanoparticle and potassium silicate were studied on the regeneration and growth of grape cuttings var. Khoshnaw under salinity condition. The treatments consisted of salinity stress (0, 50, and 100 mM NaCl), iron nanoparticles (0.0, 0.08, and 0.8 ppm) and potassium silicate (0, 1, and 2 mM) under an in vitro environment. The overall results indicated that salinity significantly (p ≤ 0.05) increased soluble carbohydrates and carotenoid contents. On one hand, it reduced all studied morphological and physiological traits including shoot number, shoot and root length, shoot and root fresh weight, root volume, and leaf area, along with relative water content (RWC) and chlorophylls’ content. On the other hand, the application of iron nanoparticles and potassium silicate, alone or in combination, could significantly compensate the deleterious effects of salinity on morphological traits, leading to increase their mean values compared to control condition (p ≤ 0.05). Soluble carbohydrate content showed negative significant (p ≤ 0.05) correlation with RWC, chlorophyll a, and all morphological parameters. Chlorophyll b and total chlorophyll contents showed positive significant (p ≤ 0.01) correlation with RWC. The application of higher concentrations of potassium silicate resulted in a greater ability of plants to tolerate salinity; moreover, the results suggest that moderate concentrations of iron nanoparticles may be more profitable for increasing salinity tolerance.
