This study presents the pollen aperture morphology of 148 out of approx. 200 species in 16 genera of the Detarieae s.s. and 13 related genera, investigated with light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, using various staining techniques. Features of detarioid legume pollen apertures are described, illustrated and discussed in relation to function and phylogeny. Protruding apertures in the mature pollen grains of taxa in the Detarieae s.s are associated with underlying structures composed of pectic substances called ‘Zwischenkörper’. This is the first report of Zwischenkörper in legume pollen. A review of previous literature on Zwischenkörper, evidence of how they differ from onci, and a discussion of developmental origins, terminology and function, is given. Zwischenkörper occur in pollen of Daniellia, Eurypetalum, Eperua, Augouardia, Stemonocoleus, Baikiaea, Copaifera, Pseudosindora, Detarium, Sindora, Sindoropsis, Tessmannia, Gilletiodendron, Hylodendron, Hymenaea, Peltogyne and Guibourtia of the Detarieae s.s. clade of recent molecular analyses. Exinous projections and/or bridges are present over the centre of apertures in the pollen of Sindora, Copaifera, Detarium, Pseudosindora, Hylodendron and Sindoropsis, and may cover the Zwischenkörper of live pollen. Zwischenkörper also occur in the closely related genus Barnebydendron, the sister genus to the Detarieae s.l. clade Goniorrhachis, and also Cercis of the sister clade to the Detarieae s.l. plus Goniorrhachis. A modified form of Zwischenkörper occurs in the pollen of Schotia. Zwischenkörper were not detected in the genera Colophospermum, Prioria, Gossweilerodendron, Oxystigma, Kingiodendron and Hardwickia of the Prioria clade, or in Endertia, Lysidice and Saraca of the Amherstieae clade. A new approach to the analysis of regular structures in proteins that is based on the method of molecular mechanics is proposed. The method uses only the information about the amino acid sequence. The -helical conformation was simulated using the ICM program of molecular mechanics. Energy profiles of the sequences in the -helical conformation, spanning the entire polypeptide chain, were plotted for eight proteins from the Protein Data Bank. The regions of each profile that exhibit energy minima were found to correspond to the -helical regions of the real spatial structure of the protein. Twenty-four out of 25 helices were distinctly pronounced, which indicates a rather high accuracy of the prediction. The energy profiles also help reveal the short regions that correspond to 3/10-helices and the turns that include local -helical conformations. Unlike the known statistical methods of prediction, this method makes it possible to establish the physical principles of the formation of -helical conformations. 相似文献

Summary This paper describes a rounding procedure to improve the efficiency of index selection. The procedure involves performing canonical variate analysis on the phenotypic and genotypic variances of a group of traits estimated from a progeny test experiment. The eigenvectors corresponding to the significant eigenvalues are used to transform the original traits into a set of independent variables. The selection index is then constructed based on the new set of variables. The efficiency of the new index is expected to be improved by rounding off the variables associated with the insignificant eigenvalues. 相似文献

Invasions are associated with loss of diversity and changes in species composition. This study aims to provide evidence if this loss happens at random or if the loss is related to functional traits of native species. Traits of species in communities dominated by 13 plants alien to Central Europe were compared to those found in the adjacent uninvaded vegetation. There is a weak but significant non-random pattern in the distribution of traits between the invaded and adjacent uninvaded vegetation. For example, species possessing a taproot, annuals but also juveniles of trees tend to be proportionally more abundant in the invaded vegetation, suggesting they are impacted less than species with high clonal index, perennial polycarpic species and species without a taproot, which are proportionally more represented in the uninvaded vegetation. Fast laterally spreading species, trees’ juveniles and woody species in general are proportionally more frequent in the invaded vegetation, while biennials, slow laterally spreading species but also shrubs are proportionally more frequent in the uninvaded vegetation. Juveniles of trees may compete successfully with the aliens due to being adapted to thrive in low light conditions. Annuals may thrive in the invaded communities by possessing a life strategy different from most of the selected aliens. Possessing a taproot appears to be another trait important for the successful coexistence with the dominant invasive aliens, possibly pointing to the importance of underground competition. Clonal perennial polycarpic herbs are species functionally most similar to most of the selected aliens, and these species were found to be most underrepresented in the invaded vegetation. 相似文献

Somatic embryos were induced on roots excised from in vitro plants of Prunus avium× pseudocerasus `Colt'. On medium containing 6-benzylamino purine (BAP, 1.5 μM) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D, 15 μM), a mean
of 25 (s.e. ± 2.0) somatic embryos were produced on intact root systems and 15 (s.e. ± 1.7) on roots systems cut into 10 mm
pieces. Most somatic embryos were formed directly on intact roots and indirectly (from callus) on sectioned roots. A mean
of 2.5 (s.e. ± 0.25) secondary embryos per primary embryo were formed directly on primary embryos after they were transferred
to medium containing BAP (1.5 μM), indole-3-butyric acid (10 μM) and 2,4-D (5 μM). After transfer to a medium containing BAP
(2 μM) and gibberellic acid (GA3, 3 μM), shoots developed in 75% (s.e. ± 7.3) of the embryos. Somatic embryos were not induced on explants of in vitro roots or shoots of P. avium, and were induced infrequently on zygotic embryos, although a wide range of media were tested. Possible reasons for the contrasting
embryogenic ability of `Colt' and P. avium are discussed.

A new voluminous book on gas-discharge physics is reviewed. It is emphasized that the authors consistently follow a nontraditional approach based on the electron distribution function with allowance for its nonlocal character. This opens new, sometimes unexpected, issues of the well-known phenomena, which is illustrated by the reviewer by using the positive column of a low-pressure glow discharge as an example. 相似文献
