Using nurse plants to facilitate native plant recruitment in degraded habitats is a common restoration practice across various arid and semiarid environments. Living trees or shrubs are typically considered nurse plants, whereas dead shrubs left in the landscape from prolonged drought are understudied prospective facilitators for native plant recruitment. The interaction between nurse plants and biotic pressures, such as herbivory, on native recruitment is also not well understood in semiarid plant communities. We investigated the effects of facilitation and herbivory on native seedling germination, growth, and survival in the restoration of degraded coastal sage scrub (CSS) habitat. Native shrub seedlings (Artemisia californica and Salvia mellifera) were planted, and native annual species (Amsinckia intermedia, Deinandra fasciculata, Phacelia distans, and Pseudognaphalium californicum) were sown in three Shrub Type treatments (live shrub, dead shrub, and exposed areas), with a nested Cage treatment (no cage and cage) in each Shrub Type treatment. Annual species grew equally well in all Shrub Type treatments; shrub seedlings grew largest in exposed areas. While there was little evidence of facilitation for all species tested, there were strong positive effects of caging on growth and establishment of all species. Caging palatable native species or planting species with anti‐herbivory traits around target plants may be more strategic approaches compared to using nurse plants in restoring degraded CSS after extended drought.  相似文献

Spinach leaves and photoautotrophically grown Euglena and Chlorella possess fructose 1,6-diphosphate aldolases inhibited by p-chloromercuribenzoate but insensitive to K+ or ethylenediamine tetraacetate (Type I). Dark grown Euglena and Chlorella have aldolases inhibited by p-chloromercuribenzoate and ethylenediamine tetraacetate but stimulated by K+ (Type II). The red alga, Chondrus, and the golden-brown alga, Ochromonas, appear to possess both types. Bean, pea, and spinach seeds and the leaves and cotyledons of etiolated bean seedlings contain a p-chloromercuribenzoate insensitive, apparently non-sulfhydryl variant of Type I. Sensitivity of leaf aldolase to p-chloromercuribenzoate occurs in etiolated bean seedlings only after an extended period of illumination. Type II aldolase activity in cell-free extracts of 4 blue-green algae has been demonstrated.  相似文献

本文根据幼苗的形态学特征,尤其是子叶的结构、说明在红豆杉科中最原始的属是榧树属,其幼苗为留土萌发,植株粗壮;子叶肥厚,有吸收功能,叶肉不分化,其细胞中充满淀粉粒:维管束在子叶的上部或顶部为单束2条,下部合并成双束1条。其次是穗花杉属,幼苗为出土萌发,植株粗壮,下胚轴的下部肥厚;子叶稍肉质,叶肉不分化,质体淡绿,有一定的光合功能,但主要是积累淀粉,维管束双束1条,在子叶的顶端趋于分裂。最进化的是红豆杉属和白豆杉属,可能还有澳洲红豆杉属,其幼苗为出土萌发,植株纤细;子叶薄,叶状,叶肉分化成栅栏和海绵组织,维管束单束1条。本科中族的划分和属的系统排列,从原始到进化,应该是:族1.榧树族(1.榧树属);族2.穗花杉族(2.穗花杉属);族3.红豆杉族(3.澳洲红豆杉属,4.红豆杉属,5.白豆杉属)。  相似文献

The effects of the habitation of the common cormorant on vegetation were evaluated in two colonies in Lake Biwa, central Japan. The state of the vegetation of each colony was classified arbitrarily into the following three types according to the appearance of the tree, shrub and herb layers; dense tree layer (Type 1), sparse tree layer and herb layer (Type 2), and sparse tree layer with dense herb layer (Type 3). The density of cormorant nesting was almost similar among the three types, except for part of Type 2. Trees, especially large ones on which cormorants nested, were found to be heavily damaged, and there were few seedlings and saplings found under the canopy trees.Chamaecyparis obtusa andCryptomeria japonica were more heavily damaged than other evergreen and deciduous trees. In the herb layer, only a few species such asReynoutria japonica orPhytolacca americana were abundant. These results suggest that the habitation of cormorants could simplify the structure and the species composition of forests.  相似文献

Epidermal Patterning in Seedling Roots of Eudicotyledons   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Three types of epidermal patterning occur in roots of angiosperms:in Type 1, all the epidermal cells can potentially produce roothairs (hair cells); in Type 2, asymmetric cell divisions produceshort cells that develop into hair cells and larger cells thatdo not (non-hair cells); and in Type 3, hair cells occur infiles separated by one to three files of non-hair cells. Inthe present study we examined the epidermal patternings of seedlingroots of 77 eudicotyledonous species from 43 families. We foundthat Type 1 patterning was the most common and no species hadType 2 patterning. Previously, Type 3 epidermal patterning hadbeen described only in the family Brassicaceae. In additionto the Brassicaceae (including the Capparaceae), we found Type3 patterning in the Brassicales families Limnanthaceae and Resedaceae,whereas the other Brassicales families we examined, Caricaceaeand Tropaeolaceae, had Type 1 patterning. We also found Type3 patterning in six families of the Caryophyllales sensu lato:Amaranthaceae, Basellaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Plumbaginaceae,Polygonaceae and Portulacaceae. However, the family Cactaceae,which is also in this order, had Type 1 patterning. Only oneother species, Nemophila maculata(Boraginaceae), had Type 3patterning; the other two species that we examined in this familyhad Type 1 patterning. Type 3 patterning thus occurs more widelyin the eudicotyledons than was previously thought. Type conversion from native shrubland to invasive annual grassland is on the rise due to global change factors such as prolonged drought and increasing fire frequency. Efforts to restore chaparral ecosystems are limited by current understanding of competitive interactions between shrub seedlings and invasive grasses as well as soil moisture requirements of chaparral seedlings. We set up a restoration experiment where we out-planted Adenostoma fasciculatum seedlings, manipulated invasive grass density, monitored soil moisture at two depths, and tracked seedling survival and biomass. We found that higher invasive grass cover was associated with higher rates of seedling mortality but found no difference in biomass per surviving plant. Soil moisture was higher at 15 cm under the 100% weeded treatment than the 50% weeded and control treatments during January. Lower invasive cover resulted in higher richness of annual native plant species, as plots with 100% invasive removal had higher richness than 50% removal and unplanted control plots. Future restoration efforts in the chaparral will likely be more successful in increasing initial seedling establishment if invasive grass removal is included.  相似文献

Ectomycorrhizas of naturally grown Momi fir (Abies firma) seedlings were characterized based on morphological features of fungal partners. A total of 128 seedlings were collected over three years (1995–1997) from a 10×30 m plot where occurrences of ectomycorrhizal fungal fruitbodies were monitored for the same period. Thirty-seven morphologically distinct ectomycorrhizal types were distinguished based mainly on the color of ectomycorrhizas and the characteristics of fungal mantles. Type 37 was thought to beCenococcum geophilum because of the jet-black mycorrhizas and the characteristic structure of mantle surfaces. For half of the classified morphotypes, fungal partners were inferred to be the generaLactarius, Russula, andTuber, and unidentified Basidiomycetes, based on earlier references.  相似文献

Disturbances play an important role in the establishment of vegetation at Inaccessible and Nightingale Islands in the South Atlantic Ocean. Type, altitude and age of disturbance all influenced the species richness, life-form and abundance of seedlings. A few indigenous species appear to be dependent on small disturbances, such as the clearings around albatross nests, for their perpetuation, e.g. Acaena sarmentosa and Gnaphalium thouarsii. Alien forbs and grasses, e.g. Conyza albida, Holcus lanatus, Pseudognaphalium luteo-album and Rumex obtusifolius, tended to dominate large recent disturbances such as soil-slips and depressions, and to colonize man-modified sites. Alien plants were less common on the plateau at Inaccessible Island than on the lowlands. Their success appears to be enhanced by large-scale disturbances. The highest density and diversity of seedlings occurred on large soil-slips where mineral soil was exposed and vegetation cover was minimal.  相似文献

Six types of floral homeotic variants of in vitro seedlings were observed in doubleflower sinningia. Type I, red and green mosaic petals exist in the outermost whorl of petal-whorls, 2.38%. Type II, the outermost whorl of petal-whorls exhibit green petals with thin yellow edge, 25.0%. Type III, green petals exist in the innermost side of normal red petal whorls, 1.78%. Type IV, multiple whorls of green petals exist in the inner side of normal sepals, no stamen and carpel, 1.67%. Type V, it exhibits duplicated whorls of sepals in the outermost, 7.14%. Type VI, it exists multiple whorls of green sepals, no petal, stamen and carpel, 0.12%. The total percentage of all types of floral homeotic variants is up to 38.1%. The distribution of nodal site of homeotic flowers were analyzed, and the results showed that the homeotic flower occurred mainly at the fourth and fifth nodes.  相似文献

A cDNA library was constructed from mRNA prepared from light-treated seedlings of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and cDNAs for the chlorophyll a/b-binding protein LHC-II were identified using a pea gene as the heterologous probe. Three cDNA clones were sequenced. The deduced amino acid sequences of two of the genes corresponded to Type I and one to Type II LHC-II proteins which were ca. 90% homologous to their angiosperm counterparts. The transit peptides of the Scots pine preLHC-II showed features common to angiosperm transit peptides. The three cDNAs had a 70 to 75% preference for G+C in the third base position. CpG and GpC profiles and degenerate codon position bias suggested that two of the corresponding genes lie within CpG islands.  相似文献

The nucleotide sequence of a leaf cDNA clone encoding a Type III chlorophyll a/b-binding (CAB) protein of light-harvesting complex II (LHCII) in barley is reported. Sequence comparisons and results from in vitro import into chloroplasts demonstrate that the cDNA clone encodes a functional transit peptide of 45 amino acid residues and a mature polypeptide of 223 residues with a predicted molecular mass of 24.3 kDa. After insertion into thylakoids, the mature protein is resistant to protease attack. Hybridization analysis using a gene-specific probe shows that the gene is expressed in dark-grown seedlings and that the amount of mRNA increases during illumination.  相似文献

结合广东番禺红树林造林的现状,对影响红树林幼苗成活率和生长状况的因素进行初步分析,并据此提出提高造林保存率的措施等。影响红树林造林成活及生长的因素为:①水深:潮水越深,红树幼苗成活率越低,生长越差;②风浪:海面风浪越大,红树幼苗受干扰越大,成活和生长越差;③人为活动干扰为严重影响红树幼苗的成活和生长;④造林地的杂草会影响某些红树植物幼苗的光照条件;⑤海滩垃圾废物会挂断和压倒大量红树幼苗;⑥海滩石油污染会阻止红树胚轴的萌发;⑦幼苗种植时越粗壮,种植得越精细,则种植后生长越好。并提出提高造林成效的措施:①加强维护和管理:包括护理受损伤的红树幼苗,清除塑料袋等垃圾物,罅在红树幼苗区的捕捞活动,造林前清除杂草和固定某些红树植物幼苗;②补植受破坏的红树幼苗和扩大种植。  相似文献

Surface immunoglobulin allotypic determinants on rabbit spleen lymphoid cells are ultrastructurally localized by labeling with antiallotype antisera and soluble complexes of ferritin and rabbit antiferritin of a given allotype. At 0 °C surface Ig is visualized in patches on the membrane of 54% of the spleen lymphocytes examined. Four morphologically distinct categories of spleen lymphocytes display different amounts of labeled surface Ig. Type I cells are essentially identical to peripheral blood lymphocytes and demonstrate rapid endocytosis of surface Ig at 37 °C. Type II cells greater amounts of surface Ig, demonstrate little endocytosis, and are consistent with lymphoblast cells. Type III cells have the greatest amount of surface Ig, reveal some endocytosis, and are morphologically consistent with proplasmacytes and plasmablast cells. Type IV cells are immature plasma cells and have very little detectable surface Ig. The percentage of each cell type making up the labeled population is Type I, 28%; Type II, 21%; Type III, 50%, and Type IV, 1%. Immunoferritin labeled Ig determinants may be modulated from the surface of these cells at 37 °C by endocytosis and/or by shedding after reaction with anti-Ig antisera.  相似文献

Three experiments were performed to study the influence of challenging incentives on feedback-assisted heart rate reduction for coronary-prone (Type A) and non-coronary-prone (Type B) males. In the first experiment, when subjects were given a competitive instructional set, Type As were significantly more successful relative to Type Bs in reducing their heart rate; with a noncompetitive set, Type Bs were significantly more successful than were Type As. In the second experiment, when told that heart rate reduction was a scarce ability, Type As reduced heart rate significantly better than did Type Bs; when told that heart rate reduction was a common ability, Type Bs achieved significantly greater heart rate reduction than did Type As. In the third experiment, when heart rate reduction was described as being instrumental to time-urgency (i.e., getting more done in less time), Type As reduced heart rate significantly bettern than did Type Bs; when heart rate reduction was described as being instrumental to relaxation, Type Bs were significantly better able to reduce heart rate. In all three studies, the incentives had no effect on heart rate when feedback was not provided. The results are discussed as support for the notion that Type A behavioral pattern characteristics can be exploited to reduce Type A symptoms. Implications for how coronary-prone individuals may be challenged to modify symptoms within the clinical setting are discussed.  相似文献

The honeydew of Myzus persicae feeding on radish seedlings contains glucose, fructose, trehalose, melezitose and sucrose, of which glucose and fructose are present in radish seedlings. In addition, the honeydew contains eight organic acids, of which seven are present in uninfested seedlings and six are present in infested radish seedlings: of the eighteen phenolic acids in the honeydew, five are present in uninfested radish seedlings. Auxins, gibberellins, growth inhibitors and cytokinins are present in the honeydew. The presence of carbonate and bicarbonate previously recorded in honeydew of M. persicae could not be confirmed, but ammonia is present in fresh honeydew and accounts for its high pH.  相似文献

The systemic effects of neem on the western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande), were investigated in laboratory trials using green bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L., in arena and microcosm experiments. In arena experiments, systemic effects of neem against western flower thrips larvae on primary bean leaves were observed with maximum corrected mortality of 50.6%. In microcosm experiments using bean seedlings, higher efficacy in the control of western flower thrips were observed with soil applications of neem on a substrate mixture (i.e., Fruhstorfer Erde, Type P, and sand) in a 1:1 ratio (93% corrected mortality) compared with application on the commercial substrate only (76% corrected mortality). However, longer persistence of neem was observed with soil application on the commercial substrate, which showed effects against thrips for up to 6 d after application. In addition to systemic effects observed on all foliage-feeding stages of western flower thrips, mortality on contact and repellent effects were observed on soil-inhabiting stages after soil applications of neem. Finally, bean seedlings grown from seeds pregerminated for 3 d in neem emulsion were also toxic to western flower thrips.  相似文献

Abstract

Action of cyanide on growth and greening of seedlings of Picea abies and Larix decidua.—The effects of cyanide on growth and greening of dark germinated seedlings of Picea abies and Larix decidua are studied. While growth of Picea seedlings is scarcely inhibited, the effect of the inhibitor on Larix seedlings is very drastic. Greening of Picea seedlings is never inhibited while, at stronger concentrations, cyanide weakly inhibits greening of Larix seedlings. When seedlings are treated with cyanide and salicylhydrossamic acid, an inhibitor of mithocondrial respiration cyanide non-sensible, growth is inhibited more strongly than when cyanide only is used and greening too is inhibited. Cyanide is shown to be able to reach megagametophyte and embryo and to be incorporated steadily.  相似文献

2000年8~10月自大兴安岭新林林业局和兴隆林业局采集各种林型下的伞菌担子果,进行分离培养、纯化,获得36个菌株。经对红皮云杉室内接种试验获得6个可与红皮云杉共生形成外生菌根的菌株。室内接种试验结果表明,在红皮云杉播种苗上接种菌根菌的时期应在出苗后30d左右。菌根形成的适宜温度为20℃左右。筛选得到的6个菌株对红皮云杉幼苗的生长有明显的促进作用。接种林地菇(Agaricus silvaticus)、031和L15菌株的苗木叶绿素a含量明显高于其他菌株和对照;接种009、004、林地菇和L15菌株的苗木叶绿素b含量也明显高于其他菌株和对照;接种林地菇、L15、031、009和025菌株的苗木与对照苗木在重量上差异显著;其中接种林地菇和L15菌株的苗木比对照苗木分别增加了19.23%和23.08%;接种6个菌株的苗木与对照苗木高度比较差异非常显著,接种林地菇和L15菌株的苗木与对照相比分别增加17.83%和16.37%。室外接种结果表明,接种林地菇的苗木高生长最好,接种70d高于对照9.24%;接种菌株L15的苗木地径生长最好,接种70d高于对照9.92%;接种菌株009的苗木侧根数最多,接种70d高于对照51.91%;接种菌株009的苗木主根最长,接种70d高于对照3.36%;而接种菌株031的苗木全株感染菌根率最高,接种70d高于对照13.90%;接种菌株031的苗木光合作用最强,高于对照20.02%。从几项主要的指标综合来看,菌株L15、菌株009和菌株031是有潜在研究和应用价值的优良菌株。  相似文献
