The tongue of the striped dolphin, Stenella coeruleoalba, shows a V-shaped row of pits on its posterior dorsum. Their development is described on the basis of macroscopic and light microscopic observations on fetal, young, and adult stages. Four to eight pits occur, most often five in the adult. Anlagen of the pits first protrude as round epithelial thickenings which later increase in diameter and become thin. The circular primordia then sink, and grooves oriented both circularly and radially develop in the walls of the shallow pits thus formed. Pits and grooves deepen with development so that older pits become lined with conical projections. As pits grow further, they become elongated anterolaterally, retaining slit-like openings. Each pit in the adult is 2–8 mm long and about 1 mm wide. The pits are not derived from lingual gland ducts but develop independently. Taste buds resembling those of other mammalian tongues can be found in young dolphins but are few in number and limited to the thin epithelium of the pit projections and to that of the side wall of the pits. They first appear in the late prenatal period but degenerate in the adult. A rich nerve supply is observable in the lamina propria below taste buds in the calf. The pits and their projections in the dolphin correspond to the vallate papillae of other mammals, but whether each projection or a whole pit corresponds to a single vallate papilla is undecided.  相似文献

在现代生存的四类淡水豚中,恒河豚(Platanista gangetica)和拉河豚(Pontoporia blain-villei)的舌已有详文报道(Arvy和Pilleri,1970;Yamasaki等,1976a)。亚河豚(Iniageoffrend)的舌也在Yamasaki的文章中作为和上述二种淡水豚舌的比较而述及。白暨豚(Liptes vexillifer)的舌除陈宜瑜等(1975)曾提及外,迄今未有其他报道。鉴此,作者对白暨豚的舌作了解剖学和组织学的观察,现将研究结果报告如下: 白暨豚舌的标本取自幼体、亚成体、成体和老年个体等七头个体。为了比较,还收集了亚河豚、其它海豚类和陆生哺乳类的舌。用10%甲醛固定保存,各项量度根据固定标本测量。白暨豚舌的外形描述以NNC 7909号标本为主,以其它个体的观察为辅。其组  相似文献

Ocean warming may lead to smaller body sizes of marine ectotherms, because metabolic rates increase exponentially with temperature while the capacity of the cardiorespiratory system to match enhanced oxygen demands is limited. Here, we explore the impact of rising sea water temperatures on Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua), an economically important fish species. We focus on changes in the temperature‐dependent growth potential by a transfer function model combining growth observations with climate model ensemble temperatures. Growth potential is expressed in terms of asymptotic body weight and depends on water temperature. We consider changes between the periods 1985–2004 and 2081–2100, assuming that future sea water temperatures will evolve according to climate projections for IPCC AR5 scenario RCP8.5. Our model projects a response of Atlantic cod to future warming, differentiated according to ocean regions, leading to increases of asymptotic weight in the Barents Sea, while weights are projected to decline at the southern margin of the biogeographic range. Southern spawning areas will disappear due to thermal limitation of spawning stages. These projections match the currently observed biogeographic shifts and the temperature‐ and oxygen‐dependent decline in routine aerobic scope at southern distribution limits.  相似文献

This investigation aimed to determine the morphological characteristics of the tongue, palate and laryngeal entrance of southern lapwing by gross anatomy and scanning electron microscopy. For this purpose, the organs of three birds were used as material. Numerous densely distributed acicular projections were found on the lingual apex. Papillary crest consisting of sharp conical papillae were observed between the body and root of the tongue. Conical papillae of the lateral border of the papillary crest were triangular in form, and other conical papillae of the papillary crest were shorter in form. There were no papillary projections or papillae on the smooth surfaces of the lingual body and radix. On the median part of the palate, larger conical papillae, which were directed caudally, also surrounded entrance of the choanal cleft. The transversal papillary rows of conical papillae were observed between the rostral and caudal parts of the choanal cleft and on the caudal border of the infundibular cleft. The laryngeal entrance was surrounded by smooth mucosa without conical papillae. However, in the caudal border of the glottic fissure, there was a conical papillary row formed by numerous conical papillae. The life cycle of the dinoflagellate Oodinium alternates between an ectoparasitic trophic phase and a phase of multiplication as free-living flagellates. The nucleus of the young ectoparasite has rod-like chromosomes similar to those of free-living dinoflagellates. As growth of the trophont proceeds the nucleus becomes increasingly homogeneous. When Oodinium leaves its host, nuclear reorganization processes occur rapidly; they correspond to a peculiar prophase of the first sporogenetic division. The following division stages are similar. A conspicuous fusorial system appears between two archoplasmic areas which are responsible for daughter-chromosome segregation. The nuclear envelope remains intact while the fusorial microtubules are attached at distinct, kinetochore-like structures onto the nucleus. As the chromosomes become more condensed the kinetochore-like formations disappear.  相似文献

The development of secondary sexual characters, the petasma, and thelycum growth were studied in Xiphopenaeus kroyeri. In adult females, the thelycum is a single plate and its anterolateral portion is characterized by a reduced hood. The aperture resembles a transverse ridge. In immature stages, the ridge has a space between the plates, which becomes narrower as it reaches the end of development. The female gonopore is ‘comma’ shaped. In adult males, the endopods of the petasma are linked at the dorsomedial margin by a large quantity of cincinnuli. In juveniles, cincinnuli gradually increase in number until they join both endopods. At the end of development the petasma is T-shaped. The male gonopore is C-shaped. The relative growth of the petasma total length versus juvenile body length showed a highly positive allometry, whereas in adults the growth was isometric. For the relationship carapace length versus thelycum width, the juvenile phase of females is characterized by an isometry and the adult phase by a negative allometry.  相似文献

In common with the embryos of other anamniotes, young of the Australian lungfish, Neoceratodus forsteri, have ciliated cells in the epidermis. These first appear at stage 28, ˜ 10 days before hatching, and develop progressively to a peak in numbers and in activity at stage 44, just after hatching. After this point, ciliary action in the epidermal cells slowly declines, and cilia disappear completely from the outer surface of the hatchling by stage 52. Cilia are lost earlier from the oral epithelium, between stages 45 and 46, and from the epithelium covering the gills and lining the operculum at stage 51, although they are retained in the nares and in the cavity of the olfactory organ. To assess possible functions for the ciliated epidermis in lungfish hatchlings, the presence of cilia in the epidermis of young N. forsteri is compared with landmarks of development. The ciliated epidermal cells are not associated with movements of the embryo within the egg capsule, nor are they a part of a feeding mechanism. They are not related to oxygen uptake. The ciliated epidermis appears to function as a mechanism for clearing the animal of particles and settling organisms before hatching, when the egg membranes have developed holes, and after hatching, when the young fish is living among the submerged rootlets of trees growing on the river bank or in dense stands of aquatic plants. The function of a ciliated epidermis in N. forsteri hatchlings in relation to microhabitat is discussed. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Melanin deposits in the brain ventricles of Xenopus tadpoles were studied with light and electron microscopy (TEM and SEM). They appeared to be aggregations of melanophages which accumulated free pigment granules excreted by ependymal cells into the cerebrospinal fluid. Whereas the meningeal melanophores contained oval melanosomes of various sizes, the melanosomes in the scavenger cells were all spherical, large (0.6–1.1 μm) and fairly uniform in size. Moreover, they were arranged in spherical groups which were never seen in the cytoplasm of the melanophores. The melanosomes within the cells were identical to the free melanosomes found in the cerebrospinal fluid and those which occurred within the ependymal cells in the young larva, suggesting a common origin from the egg cytoplasm. The number of the melanosomes in the melanophages increased with age. Fine cytoplasmic projections were involved in catching and engulfing the melanosomes. Some other features of the cytoplasm, e.g., large deposits of cell detritus, also indicated that the cells were macrophages. In the later stages, (48, 49) no projections were observed, but the cells were totally filled with melanosomes.  相似文献

Summary The three groups of proteolytic inhibitors present in resting barley grains, namely, trypsin inhibitors, Aspergillus-proteinase inhibitors, and inhibitors of endogenous proteinases, occur in both the embryo and the two endosperm tissues. There are pronounced quantitative differences, however. The three inhibitor activities in the embryo are, respectively, 6-, 0.1-, and 6-fold of those in the endosperm.During germination at 20° all inhibitor activities disappear from the endosperms in 4–5 days. Young rootlets and coleoptiles contain inhibitors of trypsin and Aspergillus proteinase, but these disappear after 4–5 days' germination. However, the trypsin inhibitor content per seedlings remains roughly constant through the whole period. The Aspergillus-proteinase inhibitors, in contrast, exhibit a pronounced increase of activity per seedling.No inhibitor activities were detected in leaves and roots at later stages of growth.The trypsin inhibitor which we have earlier purified from resting grains occurs exclusively in the two endospermal tissues and is immunologically entirely different from the trypsin inhibitors present in embryos and young seedlings.  相似文献

The morphology and histomorphology of the tongue and the histochemistry of the lingual glands of eight specimens from four species of Ligurian Sea odontocetes (Stenella coeruleoalba, Tursiops truncatus, Grampus griseus, and Ziphius cavirostris) were studied. The shape of tongues and the appearance of their dorsal surfaces differed between species. The lingual glands differed in size, distribution, and histochemistry by species. In S. coeruleoalba and G. griseus, a strong alcianophilic mucous material was detected in the lingual glands, while neutral and acidic mucous substances were observed in the most proximal secretory acini. In G. griseus, small simple alveolar apocrine glands were also found, and the duct of the serous lingual glands in Z. cavirostris is of apocrine type. Numerous mechanoreceptors were observed. Only the tongue of the young specimens showed marginal papillae: their histomorphological composition is consistent with the hypothesis that they create a tight seal between the tongue and the roof of the cavity in order to create suction. This comparative study suggests that differences in tongue morphology and in the morphology and histochemistry of lingual glands might be related to feeding habits.  相似文献

The formation of the synapton (synaptonemal complex) was followed by an electron microscopic examination of large samples of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells at various stages of meiosis. Three temperature-sensitive mutants were used, cdc4, cdc5 and cdc7, which undergo a slow but normal meiosis at 25° C. At the restrictive temperature of 34° C, cdc4 and cdc5 arrest at an advanced enough stage of meiosis to allow the study of synapton morphogenesis. Based on the frequencies of nuclear structures, we describe the formation of the central region and central elements of the synapton in the dense body, which may be part of the nucleolus. This process occurs during early meiotic stages, concomittantly with recombination commitment and premeiotic DNA replication. Mature synaptons usually appear after premeiotic S, at the pachytene stage, and later disappear. A possible intermediate stage in this disappearance is found in arrested cdc5 cells, which contain paired lateral elements without central elements. — Following the frequencies of spindle plaque configurations, we conclude that the plaques in meiosis duplicate once at the beginning of the main DNA replication, as is also observed prior to mitosis. In contrast to mitotic cells, however, meiotic plaques remain duplicated for a long period, until the synaptons disappear, and only then separate from each other to form a spindle. During late stages of the first meiotic division, the outer plates of the spindle plaques thicken, to duplicate later and give the second division spindles. The characteristically thick outer plate may have a role in the formations of the ascospore wall.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. An ultrastructural study of the myxamoebae of Acrasis rosea in the vegetative, aggregative and culminative stages was made. An intracytoplasmic system of microfibrillar bundles develops as the cells enter the aggregative stage and commence the morphogenetic sequence leading to the construction of a fruiting body. The fibrillar bundles disappear in the cells of the mature fruiting body. No relevant ultrastructural differences were observed between spores, stalk cells and microcysts. Each of these cells is surrounded by a single-layered coat of fibrillar material that is oriented parallel to the cell surface. Tubular structures were observed between the plasma membrane and the cell coat. The tubules may be layered along the cell periphery or they may be recessed in pockets formed by the plasma membrane. They resemble lomasomes typical of fungal cells. The myxamoebae of A. rosea clearly differ from the Dictyostelium-type myxamoebae in mitochondrial structure, the presence of lamellate structures in the nucleolus and the absence of prespore vacuoles.  相似文献

The developmental rate of immature stages and the reproduction of adults of Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Schrank), T. neiswanderi Johnston and Bruce and Acarus farris (Oudemans) were examined at 70, 80 and 90% r.h. and a constant temperature of 25°C. At 70% r.h., T. putrescentiae and A. farris immature stages failed to reach the protonymph stage as 100% of the larvae died, whereas T. neiswanderi was able to complete development. The developmental time of all immature stages for the three species was significantly increased as relative humidity was reduced. The mobile stages were particularly susceptible, as the time needed to complete their development at lower relative humidities suffered greater increases than the egg stage. At 70% r.h., T. putrescentiae and A. farris were not able to lay eggs and only 24% of T. neiswanderi pairs were fertile. The reproductive parameters of the three species at the relative humidities at which they were able to lay eggs showed significant differences, except for the percentage of fertile mating at 80 and 90% r.h. As relative humidity increased, preoviposition period was reduced and fecundity and daily fecundity was increased, whereas the oviposition period showed different patterns for the three species. The intrinsic rate of increase (r m ) of T. neiswanderi at 70% r.h. was negative indicating that, at these conditions, mite populations of this species will diminish until they disappear. As relative humidity increased from 80 to 90% r.h. this parameter was almost twofold for both Tyrophagus species. The r m obtained for A. farris at 90% r.h. was similar to that of T. neiswanderi at the same humidity while at 80% r.h. it was very small so that the population doubling time was more than 84 days. The influence of relative humidity on biology of these mites and its practical application as control measure are discussed.  相似文献

The aims of this study were to determine relative age, growth rate and size at maturity of tigerfish in the Okavango Delta as a basis for the development of a fisheries management plan. A total of 206 tigerfish Hydrocynus vittatus, collected by angling in August 2005,2006 and 2007, was assessed for sexual maturity and relative ages were estimated from 135 of these, using scales and whole and sectioned otoliths. Sectioned otoliths were the most appropriate method for ageing H. vittatus of up to 20 years old. Males were present in all relative age classes, proving that they do not disappear from the population at a young age, as previously thought. Males matured at 451 mm TL and females at 522 mm TL, corresponding to an approximate relative age of four years for both sexes. Males lived for up to 20 years, females for up to 16 years.  相似文献

Cell death was characterized during stages 8 and 9 in the leech Helobdella with a modified terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling method. Using confocal analysis, the positions of dying cells were compared to rows of cells expressing the leech engrailed protein ht-en and to fluorescently marked cell lineages. Dying cells were present in diverse tissues. Some dying cells were in no obvious pattern, and others were in segmentally iterated patterns. Particular attention was paid to the ectoderm and mesoderm, where most of the cells examined died over a period equivalent to 1–4 h at 25°C. Segmentally iterated rows of dying cells were observed in the mesoderm just beneath the nf-derived ht-en expressing cell rows at a time when ht-en expressing cells were beginning to disappear. In order to understand the molecular mechanisms which are responsible for desiccation tolerance in the resurrection plant Craterostigma plantagineum Hochst. a thorough analysis of the CDeT11-24 gene family was performed. CDeT11-24 comprises a small gene family whose genes are expressed in response to dehydration, salt stress and abscisic acid (ABA) treatment in leaves. The gene products are constitutively expressed in roots and disappear only when the plants are transferred to water. It is therefore suggested that the proteins are involved in sensing water status. The predicted proteins are very hydrophilic; they share some features with late-embryogenesis-abundant proteins, and sequence similarities were found with two ABA- and drought-regulated Arabidopsis genes. The analysis of β-glucuronidase reporter genes driven by the CDeT11-24 promoter showed high activity in mature seeds in both transgenic Arabidopsis and tobacco. In vegetative tissues the promoter activity in response to ABA was restricted to young Arabidosis seedlings. The responsiveness to ABA during later developmental stages was regained in the presence of the Arabidopsis gene product ABI3. Dehydration-induced promoter activity was only observed in Arabidopsis leaves at a particular developmental stage. This analysis indicates that some components in the signal transduction pathway of the resurrection plant are not active in tobacco or Arabidopsis. Tongue anlagen from which the anterior, posterior, right or left lateral halves had been extirpated generally regenerated completely within 15–30 days in Rana catesbeiana and R. clamitans. Regeneration was most rapid and greatest in posterior and median regions. Removal of anterior-posterior and left-right middle thirds and of anterior, posterior, right or left dorsal or ventral quarter anlagen (R. catesbeiana) showed similar regenerative gradients. Regeneration never occurred when entire anlagen were removed. Extirpations of early and half-developed lingual cornua were made in metamorphosing and young adult R. catesbeiana, R. clamitans R. palustris and R. pipiens. Regeneration occurred where preoperative cornua did not exceed 1.5 mm, but never when they exceeded this length. It is concluded that anuran tongue anlagen, at the stages operated on, possess considerable reorganizing powers following partial extirpations.  相似文献

Five species belonging to two genera of pinnotherid crabs are reported from the Yellow Sea. Two are new to science, namely: Sakaina glabra sp. nov. and Sakaina granulata sp. nov.; while three species are recorded for the first time from China: Pinnaxodes majorOrtmann, 1894, Pinnaxodes mutuensisSakai, 1939, and Sakaina japonicaSerène, 1964. Sakaina glabra can be easily distinguished from congeners by lacking a thick rim of pubescence along the anterolateral margin of the carapace. Sakaina granulata closely resembles S. asiatica (Sakai, 1933), but differs mainly in having a row of granule-like denticles along the anterolateral margin of its carapace.  相似文献

  • 4 The index of infection at different stages in the life cycle was related to the durations of intermoult period. Ranked in order of both index of infection and intermoult duration, the development stages were: old adult > young adult > juvenile.
