Killer whales (Orcinus orca) frequently scavenged from the carcasses produced by whalers. This practice became especially prominent with large-scale mechanical whaling in the twentieth century, which provided temporally and spatially clustered floating carcasses associated with loud acoustic signals. The carcasses were often of species of large whale preferred by killer whales but that normally sink beyond their diving range. In the middle years of the twentieth century floating whaled carcasses were much more abundant than those resulting from natural mortality of whales, and we propose that scavenging killer whales multiplied through diet shifts and reproduction. During the 1970s the numbers of available carcasses fell dramatically with the cessation of most whaling (in contrast to a reasonably stable abundance of living whales), and the scavenging killer whales needed an alternative source of nutrition. Diet shifts may have triggered declines in other prey species, potentially affecting ecosystems, as well as increasing direct predation on living whales.  相似文献

Historical reconstruction of the population dynamics of whales before, during and after exploitation is crucial to marine ecological restoration and for the consideration of future commercial whaling. Population dynamic models used by the International Whaling Commission require historical catch records, estimates of intrinsic rates of increase and current abundance, all of which are subject to considerable uncertainty. Population genetic parameters can be used for independent estimates of historical demography, but also have large uncertainty, particularly for rates of mutational substitution and gene flow. At present, demographic and genetic estimates of pre-exploitation abundance differ by an order of magnitude and, consequently, suggest vastly different baselines for judging recovery. Here, we review these two approaches and suggest the need for a synthetic analytical framework to evaluate uncertainty in key parameters. Such a framework could have broad application to modelling both historical and contemporary population dynamics in other exploited species.  相似文献

The purpose of this symposium was to examine how foraging physiology is studied in the field across a diversity of species and habitats. While field studies are constrained by the relatively poor ability to control the experiment, the natural variability in both the environment and animal behavior provides insights into adaptation to change that are usually not tested in the laboratory. Talks in this session examined how foraging energy (both costs and gains) is partitioned over time. "Time," in this case, ranged from evolutionary time (how different animals are designed to most efficiently forage), to long, lifetime periods (development of foraging ability and growth), to short-duration feeding bouts, and ultimately to the minutes to hours following ingestion (metabolic and biochemical changes). From this diversity, two core themes emerged: that foraging strategies and behaviors are limited by physiology and biochemical processes and that time plays a central role in the organization of foraging behaviors and the physiological processes that underlie those behaviors.  相似文献

Laaß, M., Hampe, O., Schudack, M., Hoff, C., Kardjilov, N. and Hilger A. (2010). New insights into the respiration and metabolic physiology of Lystrosaurus. —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 92 : 363–371. The first examination by neutron tomography of a skull of Lystrosaurus declivis (Therapsida, Anomodontia) from the Lower Triassic of South Africa showed complexly constructed cartilaginous maxilloturbinals in the nasal cavity. They were situated directly in the respiratory air flow and fill out most of the ventral part of the nasal chamber. Because maxilloturbinals in extant mammals and birds serve as a countercurrent exchange system for thermoregulation and humidification, their presence in the anomodont Lystrosaurus suggests strongly that Lystrosaurus was already endothermic. The endothermic metabolism allowed Lystrosaurus to tolerate high ambient temperature fluctuations. The complexly constructed maxilloturbinals could have reduced respiratory water loss because of higher ventilation rates in drought conditions in the Karoo basin.  相似文献

American whalemen sailed out of ports on the east coast of the United States and in California from the 18(th) to early 20(th) centuries, searching for whales throughout the world's oceans. From an initial focus on sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and right whales (Eubalaena spp.), the array of targeted whales expanded to include bowhead whales (Balaena mysticetus), humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), and gray whales (Eschrichtius robustus). Extensive records of American whaling in the form of daily entries in whaling voyage logbooks contain a great deal of information about where and when the whalemen found whales. We plotted daily locations where the several species of whales were observed, both those caught and those sighted but not caught, on world maps to illustrate the spatial and temporal distribution of both American whaling activity and the whales. The patterns shown on the maps provide the basis for various inferences concerning the historical distribution of the target whales prior to and during this episode of global whaling.  相似文献

North Atlantic right whales (Eubalaena glacialis) were found in an important nineteenth century whaling area east of southern Greenland, from which they were once thought to have been extirpated. In 2007-2008, a 1-year passive acoustic survey was conducted at five sites in and near the 'Cape Farewell Ground', the former whaling ground. Over 2000 right whale calls were recorded at these sites, primarily during July-November. Most calls were northwest of the historic ground, suggesting a broader range in this region than previously known. Geographical and temporal separation of calls confirms use of this area by multiple animals.  相似文献

Patterns of genetic variation observed within species reflect evolutionary histories that include signatures of past demography. Understanding the demographic component of species' history is fundamental to informed management because changes in effective population size affect response to environmental change and evolvability, the strength of genetic drift, and maintenance of genetic variability. Species experiencing anthropogenic population reductions provide valuable case studies for understanding the genetic response to demographic change because historic changes in the census size are often well documented. A classic example is the bowhead whale, Balaena mysticetus, which experienced dramatic population depletion due to commercial whaling in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Consequently, we analyzed a large multi‐marker dataset of bowhead whales using a variety of analytical methods, including extended Bayesian skyline analysis and approximate Bayesian computation, to characterize genetic signatures of both ancient and contemporary demographic histories. No genetic signature of recent population depletion was recovered through any analysis incorporating realistic mutation assumptions, probably due to the combined influences of long generation time, short bottleneck duration, and the magnitude of population depletion. In contrast, a robust signal of population expansion was detected around 70,000 years ago, followed by a population decline around 15,000 years ago. The timing of these events coincides to a historic glacial period and the onset of warming at the end of the last glacial maximum, respectively. By implication, climate driven long‐term variation in Arctic Ocean productivity, rather than recent anthropogenic disturbance, appears to have been the primary driver of historic bowhead whale demography.  相似文献

Over the past several years, new modulators of feeding and body weight have been discovered, and our knowledge of the mechanisms and neurohumoral interactions between anorexigenic and orexigenic compounds has increased dramatically. This review aims to summarize the present knowledge of the role of leptin and several hypothalamic neuropeptides, such as neuropeptide Y (NPY), corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and melanocortins, in the regulation of appetite and body weight. It also presents the progress made in the design of interactions between leptin and hypothalamic peptides in the regulation of feeding. The role of these compounds in the pathogenesis of obesity in animals and humans, and their potential usefulness in the treatment of this disorder, are discussed.  相似文献

We report on a wintering area off the Pacific coast of Central America for humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) migrating from feeding areas off Antarctica. We document seven individuals, including a mother/calf pair, that made this migration (approx. 8300km), the longest movement undertaken by any mammal. Whales were observed as far north as 11 degrees N off Costa Rica, in an area also used by a boreal population during the opposite winter season, resulting in unique spatial overlap between Northern and Southern Hemisphere populations. The occurrence of such a northerly wintering area is coincident with the development of an equatorial tongue of cold water in the eastern South Pacific, a pattern that is repeated in the eastern South Atlantic. A survey of location and water temperature at the wintering areas worldwide indicates that they are found in warm waters (21.1-28.3 degrees C), irrespective of latitude. We contend that while availability of suitable reproductive habitat in the wintering areas is important at the fine scale, water temperature influences whale distribution at the basin scale. Calf development in warm water may lead to larger adult size and increased reproductive success, a strategy that supports the energy conservation hypothesis as a reason for migration.  相似文献

Background

Whales have captivated the human imagination for millennia. These incredible cetaceans are the only mammals that have adapted to life in the open oceans and have been a source of human food, fuel and tools around the globe. The transition from land to water has led to various aquatic specializations related to hairless skin and ability to regulate their body temperature in cold water.

Results

We present four common minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata) genomes with depth of ×13 ~ ×17 coverage and perform resequencing technology without a reference sequence. Our results indicated the time to the most recent common ancestors of common minke whales to be about 2.3574 (95% HPD, 1.1521 – 3.9212) million years ago. Further, we found that genes associated with epilation and tooth-development showed signatures of positive selection, supporting the morphological uniqueness of whales.

Conclusions

This whole-genome sequencing offers a chance to better understand the evolutionary journey of one of the largest mammals on earth.

We investigated the distribution and movements of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) in the North Pacific by analyzing whaling data and movement data of whales marked with Discovery marks. Prior studies suggested that there were discrete “stocks” of sperm whales, assuming that the intervals between historical areas of concentration indicated subpopulation boundaries. Our analyses clearly refute this assumption: whaling and marking data suggest no obvious divisions between separate demes or stocks within the North Pacific. Sperm whales appear to be nomadic and show widespread movements between areas of concentration, with documented movements of over 5,000 km, time spans between marking and recovery over 20 yr, and ranges that cover many thousand km2. Males appear to range more widely than females. Sperm whales likely travel in response to geographical and temporal variations in the abundance of medium‐ and large‐sized pelagic squids, their primary prey. Our analyses demonstrate that males and females concentrated seasonally in the Subtropical Frontal Zone (ca. 28ºN–34ºN) and the Subarctic Frontal Zone (ca. 40ºN–43ºN), and males also concentrated seasonally near the Aleutian Islands and along the Bering Sea shelf edge. It appears that the sperm whales targeted by the pelagic whalers range widely across this ocean basin.  相似文献

Self-injurious behavior (SIB) is a significant human health problem frequently associated with profound intellectual disabilities, genetic diseases, and psychiatric conditions. However, it also occurs in subclinical populations and appears to be on the rise in adolescents and young adults. SIB is also seen in a small percentage of nonhuman primates that injure themselves through biting. We have begun to characterize SIB in rhesus monkeys to identify some of the risk factors associated with this disorder, and to determine the parallels with the human condition. In our study population, 14% of individually housed monkeys (the vast majority of which are males) have a veterinary record for self-inflicted wounding. Wounding is rare, but self-directed biting is common. SIB can be elicited during aggressive altercations and may be associated with husbandry events. Some monkeys appear to be more vulnerable to acquiring SIB. This increased vulnerability is associated with certain social experiences in the first 2 years of life and with exposure to a larger number of moderately stressful events as compared to controls. Monkeys with SIB also have a dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, indicated by a blunted cortisol response to mild stressors. Our findings suggest that SIB may be a coping strategy to reduce arousal. Biting appears to rapidly lower an escalating heart rate. The potentially reinforcing effects of SIB may account for the failure of some treatment regimens. These findings are compared to studies of SIB in humans, and concordances are identified.  相似文献

Connexin43 (Cx43) gap-junction channels are highly abundant in intestinal smooth muscle but their functional impact has not been studied so far. Here, we have aimed to elucidate the functional role of Cx43 in the tunica muscularis of the mouse intestine in vivo. Transgenic mice with conditional deletion of Cx43 in smooth muscle cells (SMC) were generated. Histological investigations by immunofluorescence analyses and organ-bath recordings to assess the contractility of intestinal tissue strips were carried out. Measurements of gastrointestinal transit and of the visceromotor response by utilizing a standardized colorectal distension model to quantify alterations of visceral sensory function were also performed in SMC-specific Cx43 null mice and control littermates. Histologically, we found thickening of the tunica muscularis and a 13-fold increase of neutrophil infiltration of the gastrointestinal wall of SMC-specific Cx43 null mice. These animals also exhibited a decrease of 29% in gastrointestinal transit time. In contrast, the visceromotor response to a standardized colorectal distension was elevated, as was the contractility in SMC-specific Cx43 null mice, compared with controls. Thus, SMC-specific ablation of Cx43 in mice leads to morphological and functional alterations of the intestinal tunica muscularis, to gastrointestinal motor dysfunction and to altered visceral sensory function.
