Viséan strata are penetrated by exploration wells in the southern North Sea, reaching from the Firth of Forth in Scotland to offshore northwest Germany and to Rügen Island, northeastern Germany, south of the Baltic Sea. Several wells have been studied representing different late Viséan depositional settings ranging from proximal near-shore clastic facies (Firth of Forth, Northwest of Germany) to distal carbonate platform facies (Rügen Island). Variations of the miospore assemblages from the coeval (NM and VF Miospore Biozones) parts of these sections were analyzed with respect to palynofacies, spore abundance; morphological composition; diversity and palaeobotanical/palaeoecological affinities. While assemblages from similar down-depositional dip facies settings remain similar (even over east-west distances of > 750 km), all of the above attributes show significant variations from proximal to distal depositional settings (< 200 km to the southeast). These down-depositional dip changes appear to be continuous, but the greatest degree of change is seen at the boundaries between deltaic and non-deltaic near shore facies; between near-shore coastal clastic and carbonate platform facies; and between inner-and outer-carbonate platform facies.Miospore abundances, assemblage diversities and the number of coincident genera between the sections are reduced in moving towards distal depositional settings. This reduction most effects rounded triangular and triangular miospores, while the proportion of rounded miospores increases significantly. The palaeobotanical/palaeoecological character of the miospores also clearly changes in moving from coastal clastic to carbonate platform depositional settings. These changes appear to be largely controlled by taphonomic effects such as primary input and sorting during transportation and deposition, such that a facies-related pattern is apparent. Variations in late Viséan miospore assemblages across the studied area appear to be most closely related to the different facies realms suggesting that previously identified differences in miospore assemblages from Germany and Britain reflect depositional facies rather than regional variations in parent vegetation or climate.  相似文献

Data available show that there are many genera and species of Devonian spores in China (together with acritarchs, chitinozoans and scolecodonts) which are commonly well-preserved, especially in South China where they are also better studied. This permits their use for correlation in detailed stratigraphical studies.On the basis of the study on Devonian spores for the past twenty years it is suggested that eight Devonian spore assemblage zones may be recognised in China, with four zones for the Lower Devonian, two zones for the Middle Devonian and two zones for the Upper Devonian. Each zone is characterised by a distinctive suite of miospores.The spore assemblages of China may be correlated basically with those in Great Britain, Federal Germany, Spitsbergen, U.S.S.R., and North America.  相似文献

For the first time, fossils of unquestionable eurypterid origin are documented from the renowned Lower Devonian Hunsrück Slate Lagerstätte in southwestern Germany. The gnathobase of a coxal plate and a body segment can be attributed to pterygotid eurypterids, probably to Jaekelopterus rhenaniae. These body parts from the Hunsrück Slate once more confirm the extraordinary large size that could be attained by this Rhenish eurypterid. Based on the usual occurrence in marine–terrestrial transitional facies elsewhere in the Rhenish Devonian, rareness in the Hunsrück Slate, and poor preservation, the Hunsrück Slate pterygotid remains are most probably allochthonous, and eurypterids are considered nongenuine elements of the ‘Hunsrück Slate biota.  相似文献

The Paleocene–Eocene Taleh Zang Formation of the Zagros Basin is a sequence of shallow-water carbonates. We have studied carbonate platform, sedimentary environments and its changes based on the facies analysis with particular emphasis on the biogenic assemblages of the Late Paleocene Sarkan and Early Eocene Maleh kuh sections. In the Late Paleocene, nine microfacies types were distinguished, dominated by algal taxa and corals at the lower part and larger foraminifera at the upper part. The Lower Eocene section is characterised by 10 microfacies types, which are dominated by diverse larger foraminifera such as alveolinids, orbitolitids and nummulitids. The Taleh Zang Formation at the Sarkan and Maleh kuh sections represents sedimentation on a carbonate ramp.

The deepening trends show a gradual increase in perforate foraminifera, the deepest environment is marked by the maximum occurrence of perforate foraminifers (Nummulites), while the shallowing trends are composed mainly of imperforate foraminifera and also characterised by lack of fossils in tidal flat facies.

Based on the facies changes and platform evolution, three stages are assumed in platform development: I; algal and coralgal colonies (coralgal platform), II; coralgal reefs giving way to larger foraminifera, III; dominance of diverse and newly developing larger foraminifera lineages in oligotrophic conditions.  相似文献

本文通过对北羌塘盆地北坳陷中南部胜利河、东湖及毛毛山等地区侏罗纪布曲组6条剖面及其中丰富的腕足类、双壳类等古生物资料和岩石组合特征的研究,将布曲组地质时代划为中侏罗世巴通期(Bathonian)至早卡洛夫期(Callovian),还可能跨入早巴柔期(Bajocian)。通过本文研究和区域对比,认为布曲组的沉积时代在北羌塘盆地存在穿时性。依据岩石组合特征,布曲组沉积充填物三分性明显,下部和上部为一套以微晶结构、粒泥结构为主的低能碳酸盐岩,中部为一套以高能的亮晶粒屑灰岩为主的碳酸盐岩。结合古生物生态习性,布曲组沉积环境总体为近岸浅水开阔台地–台地边缘碳酸盐岩沉积体系,构成多个沉积旋回。这一基础资料对下一步分析北羌塘盆地坳陷中南部布曲组岩相古地理提供了支撑。  相似文献

Diversity indices (dominance and evenness) and ecological spatial structure (lifestyles and relative abundances) are important features of Changhsingian brachiopod communities prior to the end-Permian mass extinction (EPME) and could predict temporal and spatial extinction patterns during the EPME. In South China, Changhsingian brachiopod communities show higher diversity than other contemporaneous brachiopod communities in the world and have been reported from a variety of sedimentary environments. In this paper, brachiopods from 18 sections in South China were selected to divide communities and compare their ecological structure. Based on the results of network analysis, cluster analysis and quantitative data from the selected sections, we show that Changhsingian brachiopod communities in South China can be categorized into three assemblages along a marine depth gradient: the Neochonetes–Fusichonetes–Paryphella Assemblage from the shallow-water clastic-rock facies, Spinomarginifera–Peltichia–Oldhamina Assemblage from the shallow-water carbonate platform facies and Fusichonetes–Crurithyris Assemblage from the deep-water siliciclastic intracontinental basin facies. Compared with communities from carbonate platform facies, the communities from siliciclastic facies were characterized by high dominance, low evenness and low lifestyle diversity, which might be important biotic factors leading to earlier extinctions. After the extinction began in all environments, the whole earliest Triassic brachiopod community was first dominated by Fusichonetes and then by Crurithyris. These patterns of domination and replacement could be explained by morphological and ecological advantages. The domination of these two genera, which were already adapted to the oxygen and food-limited deep-water habitat, indicates that the cooler deep-water environment might have been a relatively less stressed habitat after the beginning of the EPME. This suggests that global warming might be the main trigger among the previously proposed synergistic environmental stresses, while anoxia might not, at least for the beginning of EPME.  相似文献

The island of Rügen (NE Germany), situated close to the Trans-European Suture Zone (TESZ), in the southern Baltic Sea is underlain by sedimentary rocks of an Early Palaeozoic age, known only from boreholes. The wells, Rügen 5/66 and Binz 1/73, were investigated for their chitinozoan assemblages to improve the earlier biostratigraphic dating (graptolites and acritarchs) and to facilitate comparisons with other chitinozoan assemblages on both sides of the TESZ. In the lower part of the Rügen 5/66 core (3794.7-3615.8m), Lagenochitina destombesi Elaouad-Debbaj is indicative of an early late Tremadoc age. In the upper part of the same well (3287.3-1709.7m), the observed chitinozoan taxa suggest an age spanning the early Llanvirn to the Caradoc. The entire sampled interval of the Binz 1/73 core (5217.6-5041.8m) is interpreted as belonging to the Siphonochitina formosa Biozone (early-early late Abereiddian, corresponding to the early Llanvirn). The chitinozoan data corroborate the earlier suggested biostratigraphic ages, based on acritarchs and graptolites. The chitinozoans from the Binz 1/73 well point to a high latitude provenance of the investigated host sediments at time of deposition.  相似文献

The spores of six strains of Bacillus megaterium were divided into two distinct groups on the basis of germination. Three of the strains germinated in a mixture of l-alanine and inosine (AL type spores), and three strains germinated in a mixture of glucose and potassium nitrate (GN type spores); recriprocal germination in the respective solutions did not occur. The AL spores and the GN spores were morphologically distinct. Other differences between the two spore groups included germination inhibition characteristics, dipicolinic acid content, hexosamine content, phosphorus and magnesium content, spore coat features, ion exchange properties, and heat resistance. A correlation appears to exist between spore morphology and certain other spore properties in strains of B. megaterium.  相似文献

Dyads, interpreted as cryptospore permanent dyads, are reported from sporangia and spore masses recovered from fluviatile deposits of Lochkovian (Early Devonian) age from the Welsh Borderland. The morphology, anatomy and ultrastructure of the specimens have been analysed using LM, SEM and TEM. Two specimens consist of a single sporangium terminating an axis: one is cup-shaped and attached to an unbranched axis and named Culullitheca richardsonii gen. et sp. nov., the other comprises an isotomously branching axis with one sporangium preserved and is named Fusitheca fanningiae gen. et sp. nov. Two specimens show dyads adhering to cuticular fragments presumably derived from sporangia. In one the cuticle is of irregular shape, in the other it is elliptical. The final specimen comprises an elongate spore mass. In all cases ultrastructural analysis reveals that the spore walls are essentially homogeneous. Our findings suggest that cryptospore permanent dyads were produced by rhyniophytoid plants of small stature. The affinities of these plants remain conjectural, as is the relationship of the cryptospore permanent dyads with other sporomorph morphotypes (cryptospores and trilete spores). However, the production of dyads by a plant with a bifurcating sporophytic axis is evidence against affinity with extant bryophytes. The mode of formation, adaptive significance, affinities, phylogenetic relationships and stratigraphical history (including demise) of cryptospore permanent dyads is discussed.  相似文献

Summary  This paper is focused on the facies associations of an Early-Middle Norian stratigraphic succession cropping outin the Northern Calabria (Buonvicino, Cosenza). These carbonate deposits, pertaining to the Verbicaro Unit, represent a dolomitized platform characterized by a clear dominance of automicrites over skeletal metazoans. On the basis of the chronostatigraphic data and sedimentary evolution, two stratigraphic units have been distinguished: the Lower Unit (object of the present paper) and the Upper Unit. The Lower Unit consists of an Early-Middle Norian high-relief prograding carbonate platform. The Upper Unit is represented by Middle p.p.-Upper Norian basinal deposits. Three main facies associations, indicative of different depositional settings, have been identified. The inner platform facies association is characterized by automicrite (cauliflower-columnar subordinate planar stromatolites) associated with detrital carbonates (intraclastic breccia, bioclastic grainstone and packstone). Apeculiar facies is represented by megalodontid-bearing beds. Mud-cracked horizons and low-developed teepees occur quite frequently. The margin facies association is dominated by automicrite (planar to low relief stromatolites associated with thrombolitic fenestral boundstone) and detrital carbonates with subaerial exposure features. The slope facies association includes detrital carbonates (breccia/megabreccia) associated with serpulid/sphinctozoan bioconstructions and automicrite (planar stromatolites/thrombolitic boundstone). The whole carbonate body is completely dolomitized; nevertheless the morphology and microarchitecture of carbonate components (cements, grains and automicrite) is still clearly recognizable. The dolomite Mg content ranges from 40 to 48 mole%, sometimes reaching the stoichiometric value. Cements, primary and late, represent a minor component of the rock volume; they occur more frequently on the margin and upper slope setting. Quantitative tacies analyses lead to the following conclusions:
–  ⊙ the entire platform is largely led by automicrite (50% in the inner platform, 70% in the margin, and 30% in the slope), with planar to columnar stromatolitic or thrombolitic fabrics;
–  ⊙ primary skeletal framework is usually missing, although small bioconstructions of sphinctozoans and, subordinately, serpulids, occur on the slope;
–  ⊙ automicrite has been affected by early cementation, as witnessed by non-gravitative microfabric, early fracturing and boring.
The sedimentary facies and the low-diversity fossil associations seem to indicate a stressed marine environment; the platform margin probably flanked an intra-platform basin, not an open marine basin.  相似文献

Evidence is presented from nine areas in western Europe (Speeton, Yorkshire; southern North Sea; Channel and Weald Basins, southern England; Jeanne d'Arc, Lusitanian and Aquitanian Basins of the North Atlantic continental margins; Lower Saxony Basin, north Germany; the Paris Basin and southern France) for a phase of aridity which began during the Hauterivian-middle Barremian and continued to dominate the climate of the region until the mid-Aptian, although conditions during this period were not uniformly dry throughout. Criteria for recognising arid environments include the occurrence of evaporites, abundances of carbonate-rich sediments, red beds, firmgrounds, carbonate nodules and pyrite concretions, depletion of kaolinite, spore assemblages of limited morphological diversity, and the presence of numerous coniferalean and cheirolepidiacean pollen grains. The change from generally humid to dry climates during the Barremian is thought to have been linked to a lowering of sea-level. The arid phase clearly falls within the time span of the first Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Event.  相似文献

Cyclical changes in microfossil (mainly foraminiferal) assemblages were analysed for sixteen boreholes from three stratigraphical levels in the Lower and Middle Miocene of the Central Paratethys. The following characteristics of assemblages were quantified and used for interpretation of cyclical changes in assemblages: (1) abundance of foraminifers, calcareous nannoplankton, sponge spicules and diatoms; (2) similarity, diversity and epifauna/infauna ratio of benthonic foraminiferal assemblages; (3) planktic/benthic ratio of foraminiferal assemblages. The palaeoecology (mainly palaeobathymetry) fluctuations were interpreted from the species composition of assemblages. Values of the mentioned quantitative characteristics as well as palaeoecological interpretations may be influenced by postmortem transport and resedimentation of foraminiferal tests. Therefore, prior to the interpretation of cyclical changes of quantitative characteristics, the studied sections were classified on the basis of the intensity of taphonomical changes in foraminiferal assemblages. Three different categories of sections were obtained. For every category, those quantitative characteristics of foraminiferal assemblages were chosen which reflect cyclical changes most efficiently: (1) cyclical changes of abundance of foraminifers, calcareous nannoplankton and sponge spicules, as well as the fluctuations in palaeobathymetry for sections dominated by indigenous foraminifers; (2) percentage of indigenous, suspension-transported, bedload-transported and reworked foraminiferal tests and changes in the abundance of indigenous tests for sections dominated by transported tests; (3) different modes of test preservation used for the identification of a cycle boundary for sections with only transported or reworked tests. The distinguished cycles were interpreted predominantly as manifestations of relative sea-level changes. If comparable data exist from other Paratethys regions, the determined cycles can be correlated with the other basins.  相似文献

A bacterial spore assay and a molecular DNA microarray method were compared for their ability to assess relative cleanliness in the context of bacterial abundance and diversity on spacecraft surfaces. Colony counts derived from the NASA standard spore assay were extremely low for spacecraft surfaces. However, the PhyloChip generation 3 (G3) DNA microarray resolved the genetic signatures of a highly diverse suite of microorganisms in the very same sample set. Samples completely devoid of cultivable spores were shown to harbor the DNA of more than 100 distinct microbial phylotypes. Furthermore, samples with higher numbers of cultivable spores did not necessarily give rise to a greater microbial diversity upon analysis with the DNA microarray. The findings of this study clearly demonstrated that there is not a statistically significant correlation between the cultivable spore counts obtained from a sample and the degree of bacterial diversity present. Based on these results, it can be stated that validated state-of-the-art molecular techniques, such as DNA microarrays, can be utilized in parallel with classical culture-based methods to further describe the cleanliness of spacecraft surfaces.  相似文献

Shallow-marine Kimmeridgian (Late Jurassic) deposits in the Lower Saxony Basin (LSB) composed of alternating limestone, marl and claystone attract great palaeontological interest due to their rich invertebrate and vertebrate assemblages. Unfortunately, the absence of open-marine marker fossils and numerous sedimentary gaps in combination with lateral facies changes hamper the precise stratigraphic correlation of these strata on both a local and global scale. Here, an integrated approach combining carbonate microfacies analysis, ostracod biostratigraphy and high-resolution sequence stratigraphy is applied to two Kimmeridgian sections (Langenberg and Bisperode, 60 km apart) in the southeastern LSB. High-resolution carbonate microfacies analysis enables the definition of 19 microfacies types and seven microfacies associations, which can be arranged into facies belts along a carbonate ramp. Vertical microfacies, bed thickness and diagnostic surfaces define stacking patterns that are interpreted as small-, medium- and large-scale sequences. The ostracod biostratigraphic framework established in this study provides the required stratigraphic control. Correlation of the two studied sections reveals a more proximal setting for Bisperode than Langenberg and an overall shallowing-up trend from mid-ramp to proximal inner ramp developed in both sections. Furthermore, the majority of the medium-scale sequence boundaries defined in this study can be found in similar biostratigraphic positions in other European basins. Synsedimentary tectonics combined with high sediment accumulation rates can be identified as important controlling factors for the distribution and composition of the Kimmeridgian deposits in the LSB based on detailed correlation on both a regional and super-regional scale.  相似文献

The Canterland Den locality in the Midland Valley of Scotland exposes sediments belonging to the Arbuthnott Group. They consist of typical Lower Old Red Sandstone terrestrial fluviatile deposits, which probably accumulated in an inland intermontane basin. Palynological investigation of these sediments has yielded diverse and well preserved palynomorph assemblages dominated by land-derived forms: spores, phytodebris (dispersed cuticles and tubular structures) and rare fragments of arthropod cuticle. Interestingly, rare acritarchs interpreted as deriving from non-marine algae are also present. The spore assemblages all belong to the lower subzone of the micrornatusnewportensis Spore Assemblage Biozone, indicating an early Lochkovian (Early Devonian) age. They are similar in general characteristics to previously described spore assemblages from the Arbuthnott Group, but exhibit minor differences in terms of taxon composition. They differ more significantly from coeval spore assemblages from the lowland floodplain deposits of the Anglo-Welsh basin, in terms of both relative abundance of morphotypes and taxon composition. An intriguing feature of the assemblage is the high abundance of undissociated spore tetrads. It is suggested that such tetrads are a genuine feature of Lochkovian spore assemblages, perhaps reflecting more flexible and unconventional reproductive strategies exhibited by early land plants.  相似文献

The Triassic sediments of the External Zones of the Betic Cordillera were deposited on the Southern Iberian Continental Palaeomargin. Two coeval Ladinian formations, namely the Siles Formation and the Cehegín Formation, are described to illustrate the facies and lithostratigraphic variability in the Muschelkalk carbonates. There has been some dispute over the number of carbonate units present in the Siles Formation. Our studies assign a tectonic origin to these recurrent carbonate units. Both formations comprise only one carbonate unit, which is correlated to the Upper Muschelkalk of the Catalan and Germanic basins and some Iberian Range sections. To characterize the sedimentological features of these formations, 14 facies were defined. The most widespread sediment was originally lime mud, although bioclastic deposits are also common. In the facies succession, a main transgressive-regressive sequence could be identified. According to the facies model proposed here, a muddy coastal and shallow-water platform prograded over mid ramp deposits. There is no evidence for a seawards reefal or oolitic-bioclastic sandy barrier. The most significant feature of this sedimentary interpretation is that these carbonate facies show clear characteristics of an epicontinental platform.  相似文献

Coastal mixed carbonate-siliciclastic and carbonate deposits of Late Barremian to Early Aptian age from the Lusitanian Basin (Portugal) are compared with a deep-sea succession (ODP 641) off the coast of Portugal. The coastal deposits show an abrupt cessation of rudist-dominated carbonate deposition marked by an emersion horizon and followed by the deposition of orbitolinid-rich marls during the Early Aptian. The subsequent development of the carbonate platform during the Late Aptian is masked by a hiatus. For this time interval shallow-water debris deposits of the deep-sea succession ODP 641 indicate that carbonate production in shallow-water areas resume in the early Late Aptian. Carbon-isotope stratigraphy in combination with available biostratigraphic data is used for intrabasinal correlation and for the correlation of the Portuguese with shallow-water successions from Switzerland, France, Oman and the Pacific. The correlation reveals that during the Early Aptian similar changes in their sedimentary patterns occur at the beginning of a marked negative shift of carbon-isotope values associated with the global deposition of organic rich black shales in the deep sea (OAE 1a). In all compared sections rudist-dominated carbonate deposition is stopped and followed either by orbitolinid-rich deposits, the deposition of microbial carbonates or by the drowning of the carbonate platform. The comparison shows that the deterioration for carbonate platform growth conditions during the Early Aptian occurred essentially simultaneously at the various localities. During this episode the ocean waters were in a preconditioned state of acidification stressing biocalcifying organisms. Sea level change combined with local effects like elevated nutrient levels and higher temperatures, were probably determining the nature of sedimentary change in shallow-water environments during the carbonate crisis. In the sections studied in Portugal the high abundance of orbitolinids overlying rudist limestones indicates that increased nutrient input may have played an important local role among the factors that caused an overall deterioration for carbonate producers during the late Early Aptian.  相似文献
