Movement patterns, sex differences in natal dispersal and breeding dispersal, and interchange of birds between colonies were studied in the population of Eiders Somateria mollissima breeding on the east coast of Britain. First-winter Eiders reared at the Sands of Forvie, Grampian, remain at or close to the colony, while most adults move about 100 km south to winter on the Firths of Forth and Tay. A proportion of the Forvie population is sedentary. Eiders which breed in Northumberland either move north to winter on the Tay and Forth estuaries or remain close to their breeding areas. Eiders breeding in Fife are sedentary. Recoveries of British-ringed Eiders in Scandinavia indicate that some British-born males join the Baltic breeding population, probably by pairing with Scandinavian females wintering in Britain. There is extensive natal dispersal of males from Forvie, with more than twice as many Forvie-bred females as males returning to the colony to breed. The breeding dispersal of males is also twice that of females. Dispersal of males from the relatively sedentary Forvie wintering population is less than that from the breeding population. Previous work suggested that at Forvie sedentary birds nesting close to the estuary were genetically isolated from migratory ones nesting along the coast. This situation is less clear cut than had been supposed previously, with many migrants nesting close to the estuary. It is unlikely that the genetic differences between females nesting in different parts of the Forvie colony will remain stable in the long term, due to the natal and breeding dispersal of males.  相似文献

Summary The performance of phytophagous insects is influenced by the nutritional quality of the food plant, which may vary with environmental conditions. Hardly any information exists on food-plant mediated effects of variable soil salinity on the performance of phytophagous insects. Conspicuous differences in salinity levels, however, are found in soils of intertidal wetlands such as salt marshes and mangroves. The growth of larvae of Bucculatrix maritima, a leaf miner of the salt marsh halophyte Aster tripolium, was studied on the host plant along the salinity gradient of the Westerschelde estuary (S.W. Netherlands). In addition, its performance on A. tripolium grown on low or high salinity culture medium was investigated experimentally. Although salinity conditions significantly influenced the chemistry of the host plants, insect performance seemed almost unaffected, although near the mouth of the estuary high environmental salinities may have caused some inhibition of larval growth. The results contrast with our previous studies on the stem-borer Agapanthia villosoviridescens, which showed that growth and development was conspicuously influenced by the changing characteristics of Aster tripolium along the estuarine salinity gradient. The location-dependent qualities of halophytes in an estuary thus appear to have species-specific effects on insect performance. We hypothesize that this phenomenon contributes to the existence of non-identical distribution patterns of phytophagous insects associated with the same halophyte in an estuary.  相似文献

The effects of varying salinity and calcium and potassium concentrations on the growth of two species of estuarine Rhodophyta, Bostrychia radicans Montagne and Caloglossa lepricurii (Montagne) J. Agardh, were examined in unialgal culture. Inocula of settled tetraspores on glass coverslips were incubated in six concentrations of potassium (0. 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 mg/l) at five salinities (0, 5, 15, 25, and 35%) in the presence of calcium. Growth responses of each alga were determined from the average cell number of 75 tetrasporelings after 4 days in Ott's synthetic sea-water medium. The concentrations of dissolved potassium and calcium in sea water along a salinity gradient in an estuary were determined with atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Four-day-old tetrasporeling of Bostrychia and Caloglossa demonstrated growth over wide ranges of potassium concentrations with growth maxima at 400 500 and 200 400 mg/l, at the optimal salinities for growth of 25 and 15%, respectively. These studies indicate also that the presence of calcium is essential for appreciable growth of both species at each salinity and the effects of variations in potassium are dependent upon the presence of calcium. The abundance of both species in the Mullica River estuary. New Jersey, appears to be a response to a total osmotic effect along the salinity gradient because sufficient levels of the major cations are present. However, the upper limit of both species towards the head of the Mullica River estuary may be determined by combinations of low salinity and low levels of dissolved calcium and potassium rather than by low salinity alone.  相似文献

Anaerobic chemostat enrichments have been successfully employed to isolate acetate-utilizing, sulphate-reducing bacteria from sediments in the Tay estuary. Several different morphologically and nutritionally versatile types of sulphate-reducing bacteria have been isolated by this means which has proved especially useful when they are present in low numbers. The principal advantage of this method is that strict anaerobes such as sulphate-reducing bacteria can be isolated in a controlled and reproducible enrichment system at low growth rates.  相似文献

This paper reports on an investigation into the lower Forth estuary where a combination of hydrody namic, dye and salinity measurement techniques have been employed to quantify the effects of temporally varying vertical and transverse density gradients on the diffusion and dispersion processes. It is concluded that the interaction of velocity shear and weak longitudinal salinity induced density gradient produces a complex and profound effect on estuarine solute mixing processes.  相似文献

Ophiothrix angulata (Say) from an estuary in South Carolina were less tolerant of reduced salinity than those from an estuary in Florida. Animals from North Inlet, South Carolina, became incapacitated more rapidly after exposure to a reduced salinity, and were less able to recover after return to normal salinity. This difference probably results from the more severe selection for salinity tolerance at Cedar Key, Florida. The Florida estuary has a lower average salinity (25‰) than that in South Carolina (30‰), and has more frequent extended periods of reduced salinity. The two populations are of different color varieties and size; there may be differences in the breeding seasons as well. The South Carolina and Florida populations of Ophiothrix angulata may represent different races.  相似文献

Estuaries are dynamic environments at the land–sea interface that are strongly affected by interannual climate variability. Ocean–atmosphere processes propagate into estuaries from the sea, and atmospheric processes over land propagate into estuaries from watersheds. We examined the effects of these two separate climate‐driven processes on pelagic and demersal fish community structure along the salinity gradient in the San Francisco Estuary, California, USA. A 33‐year data set (1980–2012) on pelagic and demersal fishes spanning the freshwater to marine regions of the estuary suggested the existence of five estuarine salinity fish guilds: limnetic (salinity = 0–1), oligohaline (salinity = 1–12), mesohaline (salinity = 6–19), polyhaline (salinity = 19–28), and euhaline (salinity = 29–32). Climatic effects propagating from the adjacent Pacific Ocean, indexed by the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation (NPGO), affected demersal and pelagic fish community structure in the euhaline and polyhaline guilds. Climatic effects propagating over land, indexed as freshwater outflow from the watershed (OUT), affected demersal and pelagic fish community structure in the oligohaline, mesohaline, polyhaline, and euhaline guilds. The effects of OUT propagated further down the estuary salinity gradient than the effects of NPGO that propagated up the estuary salinity gradient, exemplifying the role of variable freshwater outflow as an important driver of biotic communities in river‐dominated estuaries. These results illustrate how unique sources of climate variability interact to drive biotic communities and, therefore, that climate change is likely to be an important driver in shaping the future trajectory of biotic communities in estuaries and other transitional habitats.  相似文献

Salinity variation in estuarine environments influences the distribution of fish species as well as the availability of food resources to be used by them. This study examines the effect of the range of salinity on the trade-off between growth and feeding intensity of Atherinella brasiliensis from two tropical estuaries (positive and hypersaline). To investigate the effects of salinity, we hypothesized that hypersalinity negatively affects foraging intensity, consumption and prey selection by the Brazilian silverside, leading to differences in body condition. Sampling was carried out using the beach seine method in two areas of the estuaries (upper and lower zone) during rainy and dry periods. A total of 2549 stomachs (1124 for the positive estuary and 1425 for the hypersaline estuary) were examined, and the results indicated a dissimilarity of 92.7% of the diet between environments. In the positive estuary, there was more predation on Calanoida, Gastropoda, Hymenoptera, Ceratopogonidae larvae and Decapoda larvae, while Alga and plant-material characterized the diet in the hypersaline estuary. Significant correlations between the volume of food and salinity were observed in both estuaries. The vacuity index indicated that hypersaline environments presented higher contributions of semifull stomachs, indicating an intense consumption of algae. On the other hand,in the positive estuary, these values were less intense, but the stomachs were always with animal items. The variation found for both environments reinforces the effect of salinity on the physiological mechanism of the populations once the higher proportions of filled stomachs in the hypersaline environment indicate the need for constant and high ingestion of prey to guarantee the pronounced energy expenditure with osmoregulation.  相似文献

Protists make up an important component of aquatic ecosystems, playing crucial roles in biogeochemical processes on local and global scales. To reveal the changes of diversity and community structure of protists along the salinity gradients, community compositions of active protistan assemblages were characterized along a transect from the lower Pearl River estuary to the open waters of the South China Sea (SCS), using high-throughput sequencing of the hyper-variable V9 regions of 18S rRNA. This study showed that the alpha diversity of protists, both in the freshwater and in the coastal SCS stations was higher than that in the estuary. The protist community structure also changed along the salinity gradient. The relative sequence abundance of Stramenopiles was highest at stations with lower salinity and decreased with the increasing of salinity. By contrast, the contributions of Alveolata, Hacrobia and Rhizaria to the protistan communities generally increased with the increasing of salinity. The composition of the active protistan community was strongly correlated with salinity, indicating that salinity was the dominant factor among measured environmental parameters affecting protistan community composition and structure.  相似文献

选择闽江河口鳝鱼滩湿地与道庆洲湿地为对象,采集湿地沉积物在室内进行沉积物硝化培养,分析不同盐度水平对湿地沉积物硝化作用的影响.结果表明:闽江河口湿地沉积物硝化速率普遍较低,鳝鱼滩湿地沉积物最高硝化速率只有0.193 mg·kg-1·d-1,而道庆洲湿地沉积物硝化速率最高不超过0.050 mg·kg-1·d-1.盐度的升高会抑制闽江河口湿地沉积物的硝化作用.低盐度时(5),硝化速率下降的主要原因是硝化细菌活性受到抑制;随着盐度的升高(10),硝化速率略有上升但仍低于初始值,这是由于随着盐度的升高,盐度对好氧氨化细菌活性的抑制程度有所加强,导致系统产生NH_4^+-N的速率下降,从而造成好氧氨化细菌对表观硝化速率下降的贡献减少.沉积物硝化活性对于盐度的响应存在地域差异.咸水湿地(鳝鱼滩湿地)沉积物中的微生物对盐度的变化适应性较强,从而使该湿地沉积物硝化活性在高盐度条件下仍然较高.淡水湿地(道庆洲湿地)沉积物对盐度变化的适应性较弱,导致其沉积物硝化活性在高盐度条件下低于中等盐度.闽江河口鳝鱼滩与道庆洲的短叶茳芏湿地沉积物硝化作用较低的主要原因是沉积物呈酸性及淹水状态下的缺氧条件弱化了沉积物的硝化作用.两处湿地的硝化速率与硝化活性随时间的变化趋势为先升高后下降,这是由初始NH_4^+-N浓度、氧气含量和反硝化共同作用造成的.  相似文献

This study presents a methodology for combining archival data storage tags (DSTs) and ultrasonic transmitters to investigate the microhabitat conditions of adult Cancer magister (Dana), inhabiting an estuary. The temperature, salinity and depth experienced by free-ranging Dungeness crabs were recorded at 10-min intervals for periods ranging from 1 week to 8 months. Crabs were tracked using a hydrophone, and tags were recovered via concentrated trapping or returned by recreational fishers for a reward. These methods led to a return rate of 50%. Representative CTD tag data showed that the conditions recorded at fixed stations within the estuary were not reflective of those experienced by free-ranging crabs, but rather crabs were able to orientate and avoid low salinity within the estuary. The prevalence of low salinity exposure was linked to times of increased food availability within the estuary, suggesting that crabs were entering the shallows of the estuary to forage. The techniques used in this study demonstrate that DSTs are a viable means of determining the microhabitat conditions of crustaceans inhabiting highly variable environments.  相似文献

An estuary such as the Westerschelde is a highly dynamic environment, both on an ecological time scale where climatic and hydrodynamic forces, mainly the tides, shape a very variable environment and on a geological, evolutionary time scale, since estuaries are young and very unstable habitats.Low species diversity and high adaptability of the resident animal and plant populations are characteristic of estuarine habitats where large fluctuations in submersion, salinity, temperature etc. occur. The existing biota are therefore resilient to environmental stress and effects of the important influx of anorganic and organic pollutants from the river Schelde and its tributaries on the biota in the estuary are not easy to detect.Although water movement and sedimentation patterns in the Westerschelde are relatively well known, there exists little information on important ecological processes such as primary production and heterotrophic metabolism in the estuary.Contribution no. 405 of the Delta Institute, Yerseke.  相似文献

于2009年3月从辽宁盘锦双台河口湿地挖取芦苇根茎并人工桶栽,待缓苗成功后进行不同浓度的盐胁迫处理,用透射电镜观察芦苇细胞超微结构对不同盐度胁迫的响应,以明确芦苇细胞的耐盐性。结果表明:芦苇细胞可承受4.0%以下浓度的盐胁迫。当盐度介于0%~4.0%时,芦苇细胞膜系统开始遭到破坏,使芦苇细胞受损的膜结构发生局部内陷或萎缩变形,细胞器表面变得凹凸不平,或将功能丧失的细胞器清理出细胞外,出现破裂和解体,以响应结构损伤的膜系统的修复,使细胞功能得到修复;当盐度为4.0%时,芦苇细胞叶绿体、线粒体、细胞核等具有膜结构细胞器及细胞壁遭到破坏,造成芦苇细胞膜系统的不可逆损伤,使细胞正常的物质代谢与能量转换和信息传递无法完成,导致芦苇细胞新陈代谢过程的中断,芦苇细胞生命活动趋于停止;在8.0%浓度盐胁迫下,芦苇细胞膜系统结构完全消失解体,导致芦苇细胞直接死亡。  相似文献

Monthly collections of benthic algae were made during 1 yr at 11 stations between the mouth and the salt water limits of the Patos Lagoon estuary, Brazil. A total of 94 taxa of algae were recorded, including 40 Cyanophyta, 26 Chlorophyta, 1 Xanthophyta, 3 Phaeophyta, and 24 Rhodophyta. Although the number of Rhodophyta and Phaeophyta decreased towards lower salinities, due to local salinity patterns, species substitution among the Chlorophyta and increase of Cyanophyta in the estuary, the species number remained approximately the same between the mouth and the upper saline reaches of this estuary.

The distributional limits of 64 species in the flora resulted in the formation of three algal groups of negative correlation. The horizontal distribution of each group of species was related to type of substratum, wave exposure or salinity, or a combination of these factors. The individual evaluation of the factors demonstrated that, apart from salinity, substratum and degree of exposure are of primary importance for the horizontal distribution of a large part of the algal flora in this estuary.  相似文献

This study was conducted to examine the potential influence of salinity, a proxy for freshwater inflow, on the prevalence of the castrator parasite Loxothylacus panopaei on saltmarsh mud crabs Panopeus obesus on SW Florida oyster reefs. Spatial and seasonal patterns of the presence of potential host crabs and the prevalence of the parasite were assessed in the Caloosahatchee, Estero, and Faka Union estuaries. Lift nets (1 m2) containing 5 1 of oyster clusters were deployed on intertidal reefs at 3 sites along the salinity gradient of each estuary. Nets were deployed during 3 seasonally dry and 3 seasonally wet months for a period of 30 d. P. obesus densities tended to increase downstream in higher salinity waters, with crabs being absent from the upper station in the Caloosahatchee during both seasons and absent from the upper station of the Faka Union during wet months. Parasite prevalence was reduced upstream in each estuary during wet months compared to dry months, and for those estuaries that experienced higher relative levels of freshwater inflow. Furthermore, parasite prevalence was positively correlated with the mean salinity of capture of host crabs. Based on the distribution of P. obesus and the above patterns related to salinity, it appears that freshwater inflow and seasonal rains might regulate the prevalence of this parasite in SW Florida by creating spatiotemporal, low salinity refuges for its host.  相似文献

During their reproductive period, females of Crepipatella dilatata deposit their embryos in capsules that they then brood in the pallial cavity until juveniles emerge several weeks later, after passing through a transient veliger “larval” stage. Artificially excapsulated veligers of this species experimentally exposed to a wide range of salinities (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 psu) for six hours showed reduced activity at salinities of 15 and 20 psu, whereas encapsulated veligers exposed to those same salinities showed no reduction of activity. Artificially excapsulated veligers showed high mortality at salinities of 5 and 10 psu; encapsulated embryonic stages also showed high mortalities at 5 psu and serious sublethal effects at 10 psu in tests excluding maternal protection, showing that encapsulation alone does not provide complete protection from low salinity stress. Natural tidal cycles in the Quempillén River estuary also reduced embryonic survival at salinities of ≤ 10 psu when the capsules were exposed without maternal protection. In contrast, encapsulated embryos protected by their mothers survived well regardless of the salinity to which they were exposed, under both natural and laboratory-simulated estuarine tidal cycles. C. dilatata are able to develop in the estuary only because of maternal protection, since salinity levels in this environment sometimes decline to as low as 7 psu. Successful embryonic development in this estuary reflects the capacity of C. dilatata adults to detect dangerously low salinity levels and then seal themselves off from the environment for up to 50 hrs (O. Chaparro pers. obs.) when the salinity drops below 22.5 psu, allowing salinity to remain above this level within the pallial cavity despite continued salinity declines in the surrounding seawater.  相似文献

Abstract The height and diameter at breast height (DBH) of mangroves on the Hawkesbury River, New South Wales and the Mary River, Queensland were related to soil-water salinity, soil-water content and distance from the mouth of the estuary. On the Hawkesbury River, both Avicennia marina and Aegiceras corniculatum declined in height and DBH with increasing soil-water salinity and soil-water content, and increased in height with distance from the mouth of the estuary. Both species showed an extensive range of all variables. On the Mary River, where species diversity was higher, no relationship was found between the height and DBH of A. marina and A. corniculatum and soil-water salinity and soil-water content. Both species increased in height with increasing distance from the mouth of the estuary, a characteristic shared with all other species studied (Excoecaria agallocha, Ceriops tagal var. australis, Rhizophora stylosa). The results suggest that growth characteristics of mangroves are not a simple response to salinity gradients in diverse systems and that other variables such as nutrient availability may be important controls on mangrove growth.  相似文献

We use discrete entropy theory and the MaxT model to optimize a continuous salinity monitoring network in a coastal Louisiana estuary (71 stations, 5 station types). Four station types represent marsh zones based on plant tolerance to salinity: fresh, intermediate, brackish, and saline. The fifth station type include stations in open water spanning the entire estuarine salinity gradient. A dry year (2012) with reduced freshwater inputs, and a wet year (2019) were chosen to test the robustness of the model. Our analysis showed that thirty-one stations formed the core network for both water years, with an additional 12 (2012) and 14 (2019) stations, unique for each year, needed to capture the optimal information for salinity in all five habitats. Fourteen stations could be eliminated with minimal loss of information regardless of whether the estuary was under drought or excess freshwater conditions. The Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient (ENs), coefficient of determination (R2) and the relative error (RE) showed good to excellent agreement between salinity measured by the original network and the modeled salinity of the modified network. Discrete entropy theory and MaxT proved effective in identifying redundancies in information sufficient to allow a 20% reduction of stations. Considering the highly variable nature of salinity within an estuary over short- and long-term temporal scales within a particular geographic location and across the entire estuary, this result was unexpected. Further reductions in stations (and corresponding savings in resources and costs) will require approaches not focused on replicating the exact information content from station to station but rather on measuring those salinity patterns and thresholds that shape biotic resource response in an estuary and possibly a reformulation of monitoring objectives. Monitoring objectives should include sampling for parameters (e.g., suspended sediments and nutrients) that don't require continuous data and are less costly to sustain yet provide equally critical information for understanding coastal wetland habitat sustainability and restoration.  相似文献

根据2002~2003年珠江口12个航次的调查资料,分析了浮游桡足类种类组成、优势种演替和丰度的时空变化,探讨其影响因素。以表层盐度(S)变化将调查海域划分三个区域:I区(S<25)、Ⅱ区(2530)。结果表明:调查海域共出现桡足类65种,Ⅱ区和Ⅲ区的种类多于I区;桡足类的平均丰度为118ind·m-3,三个区域之间的比较为Ⅱ区(165ind·m-3)>I区(129ind·m-3)>Ⅲ区(62ind·m-3),春、夏季的丰度高于冬季;优势种有明显的时间和区域上的变化。I区9个航次的研究结果表明:I区桡足类种类较少;各月份之间的平均丰度差别大,由河口内往外呈增加趋势。盐度是影响珠江口桡足类种类组成和数量变化的主要因素。  相似文献

The biogeochemical controls on particulate phosphorus distribution in the Humber estuary have been investigated with regard to salinity and season. Surveys of the Humber were conducted in August 1991 and January, March and June 1992. Samples were collected for particulate phosphorus, dissolved phosphorus, suspended load and salinity analysis. Particulate phosphorus forms 16 to 93% of the total phosphorus present in the water column of the Humber estuary. Total particulate phosphorus concentrations in the Humber ranged from 1 to 45 μmol l−1. This range is comparable to that observed in similar sized industrialized estuaries of the U.S.A. and northern Europe. Flocculation at low salinities was found to be a major influence on particulate phosphorus concentrations. Highest concentrations of particulate phosphorus were found in reaches below a salinity of 5 and may result in phosphorus being trapped in the sediments of the estuary. There is evidence that this phosphorus may be released as oxygen concentrations decrease during the summer. Suspended load, adsorption/desorption equilibrium and external inputs were also found to influence the particulate phosphorus concentrations.  相似文献
