The present study investigates the chemical compositions of three Satureja montana L. ssp montana essential oils and correlates chemical variability with biological activities. GC/MS analysis showed that with an increase in altitude (100–500–800 m), a higher content of linalool, terpinen-4-ol and cis-sabinene hydrate was found, while the percentage of phenolic compounds, thymol and carvacrol decreased. Antimicrobial activity of the essential oils was tested against 7 fungal and 23 bacterial strains. The essential oil characterized by the highest content of phenols and alcohols exhibited the highest antimicrobial potential. The correlation analysis showed that the major carriers of the obtained antioxidant activity are oxygenated monoterpenes. All essential oils inhibited human serum cholinesterase activity. High antimicrobial potential, together with moderate antioxidant capacity and strong inhibition of human serum cholinesterase, classifies S. montana essential oil as a natural source of compounds that can be used in the treatment of foodborne and neurological diseases, wound and other infections, as well as for general health improvement.  相似文献

Between 1986 and 1989 we studied the influence of γ-irradiation (2.5–80 Gy) on growth processes and the content of arbutin glycoside. Bearberry [Arctostaphylos uva-ursi (L.) Sprengel] shows polycyclic characteristics of growth; the vegetation period is divided by summer dormancy (June) into periods of spring and summer growth. As plants age the summer dormancy gets longer and the period of summer growth is shorter. Irradiation with a dose of 80 Gy was lethal and a dose of 60 Gy damaged plants so much that they were not able to grow in the first spring after irradiation. Significant growth stimulation (both in the height of plants and in branching) was shown only in the second year after irradiation (2.5–60 Gy). In the fourth year the growth in all irradiated variants was weaker than in the control. Doses of 2.5 and 5 Gy did not influence the content of arbutin significantly; higher doses of irradiation changed the dynamics of production and decomposition which is connected with growth changes.  相似文献

A pot experiment was conducted to compare the responses of a non-transgenic tobacco plant (WT) and plants with genetically prolonged life-span (SAG) to risk elements of As, Cd and Zn. Plants were grown in control soil and in soil with higher levels of risk elements. The pigment contents were established by HPLC and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were measured from slow kinetics after a 15 min dark period with the PAM fluorometer. Top (i.e. young) leaves of both WT and SAG plants were more sensitive to photoinhibition caused by these risk elements but plants showed acclimation to such elements in the bottom leaves. Plants differed in the participation of individual pigments of xanthophyll cycle: increased levels of risk elements seem to stimulate especially first (violaxanthin to antheraxanthin) and second (anhtheraxanthin to zeaxanthin) steps of the cycle in WT plants. In SAG plants, toxic elements caused an increase in the content, particularly of the initial compound of the cycle — violaxanthin.  相似文献

Crosses were made between four varieties (Mahsuri, Setanjung, MR84 and MR103) of Oryza sativa L. (2n=24, AA) and one accession of O. minuta (2n= 8, BBCC). The seed set obtained ranged between 9.5% and 25.1% depending on the rice variety used. By rescuing 14-day-old embryos and culturing them on 25%-strength MS medium we obtained a total of 414 F1 hybrids. The F1s were vigorous, tillered profusely, were perennial and male-sterile. The hybrids were triploid (ABC) with 36 chromosomes and showed irregular meiosis. The average frequency and range of chromosome associations at metaphase I or early anaphase I pollen mother cells of F1 plants were 29.31(16–36) Is +3.32(0–10) IIs+0.016(0–1) IIIs+0.002(0–1) IVs. Upon backcrossing the original triploid hybrids and colchicine-treated hybrids to their respective recurrent parents, and further embryo rescue, 17 backcross-1 (BC1) plants were obtained. Of all the crosses using MR84, no BC1 plant was obtained even after pollinating 13 894 spikelets of the triploid hybrid. The BC1s were similar in appearence to the F1s and were male-sterile, their chromosome number ranged from 44 to 48. By backcrossing these BC1s and nurturing them through embryo rescue, we obtained 32 BC2 plants. Of these, however, only 18 plants grew vigorously. One of these plants has 24 chromosomes and the other 17 have chromosome numbers ranging between 30 and 37. The 24-chromosome plant was morphologically similar to the O. sativa parent and was partially fertile with a pollen and spikelet fertility of 58.8% and 12.5% respectively. All of the F1 and BC1 plants were found to be resistant to five Malaysian isolates (XO66, XO99, XO100, XO257 and XO319) of Xanthomonas campestris pv oryzae. Amongst the BC2s, the reaction varied from resistant to moderately susceptible. In Trifolium repens L. there were immediate transient depolarizationsof the membrane electropotential (Evo) when KH2PO4 was addedto phosphate-free media, but these were of the same magnitudeas the controls (K2SO4 and KCI). Furthermore, the extents ofdepolarization were the same as the expected effect of the addedK+ calculated using the Goldman equation. There was no significantdepolarization on adding H3PO4 to buffered media. Consequently,there was no evidence for a depolarization caused by phosphate.This result provides evidence that the H+–H2PO4 symportin roots of T. repens operates with a stoichiometry of 1: 1. In a group of control plants ( + P plants) and a group whichwere stressed by reducing the supply of phosphate (– Pplants), the – P plants had lower values for Evo than+P plants (– 118 mV and – 130 mV, respectively).The absence of phosphate from the measurement media also reducedEvo (mean effect = 9 mV). A significant difference in Evo between– P and + P plants persisted when phosphate was addedto – P plants. Summary In the progeny of crosses between plants with the chromosome number 2n=13+2 telocentrics as the male parents and the normal diploids of Pennisetum typhoides S. & H., two plants with 2n=13+1 telocentric chromosome were located. These two plants were heterozygous for an interchange, since at diakinesis and metaphase I associations of four chromosomes were observed. These plants had a chromosome constitution of 2n=13+t (or 6+tI); one chromosome of a homologous pair was represented by a telocentric chromosome so was monosomic for one arm, that is, these plants were monotelodisomics (Kimber and Sears, 1968).  相似文献

The change in aortic blood density in an in vivo rabbitpreparation was measured to assess fluid movement at the pulmonary capillaries caused by infusion of hypertonic solution (NaCl, urea, glucose, sucrose, or raffinose in isotonic saline) into the vena cavaover 20 s. The hypertonic disturbance increased the plasma osmoticpressure by 30 mosmol/l. The density change indicates that the fluidextraction from the lung tissue was completed within 10 s. It wasfollowed by a fluid filtration into the lung tissue and then anextraction and filtration from peripheral organs. An exchange modelwith flow dispersion yields two equations to estimate the osmoticconductance (K; where is the reflection coefficient of the test solute andK is the filtration coefficient including the total capillary surface area), and the tissue fluid volume from the area and first moment of the measured density changeover the extraction phase. The values ofK are 1.40 ± 0.11, 1.00 ± 0.10, 1.71 ± 0.10, 2.60 ± 0.23, and 3.73 ± 0.34 (SE) ml · h1 · mosmol1 · l · g1for NaCl, urea, glucose, sucrose, and raffinose, respectively. Consistent with the model prediction, the tissue fluid volume (0.28 ± 0.04 ml/g wet lung tissue) was independent of the solute used.This value suggests that all fluid spaces in the alveolar septaparticipate in the process of fluid extraction due to an increase inplasma osmotic pressure.

Plants of two genotypes of Lolium perenne L. cv. S23 and a L.perenne ? L. multiflorum Lam. hybrid cv. Augusta were grownin flowing solution culture. N was suppled in one treatmentat 10 mmol m–3 NO–3 throughout (HN), and in another(LN) the N supply was terminated after 10 d for 11 d. When was re-supplied both LN and HN plants were leftentire or defoliated. The two genotypes showed similar responsesto all treatments. The concentration of N in shoot dry matterdeclined from 4.4% to 2.0% and in the root from 2.8% to 1.0%over the 11 d of N deprivation, with 95% of the initially present being assimilated during this period. LN plantsassimilated 10% more of their total uptake than did HN plants. The in vitro nitrate reductase activity(NRA) was 10- to 50-fold higher in the youngest fully-expandedleaves than in roots and declined in the leaves during N deprivation.Between 2–6 d after defoliation, there was a large increasein NRA in leaves of HN (but not LN) plants. After defoliationof HN plants, net uptake from 10 mmol m–3 declined to negligible levels within 15 h, but in defoliatedLN plants it increased to levels similar to those of entireHN plants (15–20 µmol h–1 g–1 fr. wt.root) within 8 h. When was re-supplied to entire LN plants, uptake of increased to levels similar to those of entire HN plants within 2.3 h, butdid not markedly exceed that of HN plants for at least 10 h.Net uptake of by LN plants during depletion of stirred static nutrient solutions containing 1.0 mol m–3 lagged behind that by HN plants by 70–100 min, but the maximum unit absorption rate was similar for LNand HN plants (5–7 µmol h–1 g–1 fr.wt. root). The nature of the short-term demand for uptake following recovery from the stresses of defoliation andN starvation is discussed. A mixed population of Cucurbita at Vado El Mow in northern Tamaulipas, Mexico showed an anomalous pattern of fruit bitterness. Some domesticated plants (C. argyrosperma andC. moschata) expressed cucurbitacin bitterness whereas some sympatric free-living plants produced non-bitter fruits. This reversal of typical cucurbitacin expression suggested gene flow between crop and weed at the site. Isozyme analysis provided little insight as to taxa involved in gene exchange, although progeny from a single free-living plant carried IDH allozymes that are associated with Mexican landraces ofC. pepo. Synthetic hybridization revealed that fertile F, hybrids are produced from crosses involvingC. fraterna as the pistillate parent andC. argyrosperma as the staminate parent. Interspecific crop/weed hybrids can produce viable progeny upon self-pollination or backcrossingto either parent, andF2 families display normal allozyme segregation. Hybrid fertility, as indicated by pollen stainability, increases in progeny produced by backcrossingfrom theC. argyrosperma parent. Interspecific hybridfertility represents a potential for crop/weed gene flow that would be realized under natural conditions if pollen flow occurs betweenC. fraterna andC. argyrosperma in the fields of Tamaulipas. Oligolectic “squash bees” (Teponapis), efficientCucurbita pollen vectors, are present at the site. Thus, it is likely that natural interspecific crop/weed hybridization has occurred at Vado El Moro and this might at least partially explain the anomalous distribution of fruit bitterness among extant populations at the site.  相似文献

The cytological investigation of 12 taxa ofPanicum L. revealed that the vast majority of them have the basic number x=9 at different ploidy levels. The basic number x=8 was recorded only in the tetraploid speciesP. maximum with 2n=32. The diploid number 2n=18 was encountered inP. capillare, P. laevifolium, P. antidotale andP. coloratum (2) with 3B-chromosomes recorded in the latter species. The tetraploid chromosome number 2n=36 was found to exist inP. miliaceum, P. miliare, P. coloratum (1) andP. virgatum. The hexaploid number 2n=54 was recorded inP. bulbosum, P. dichotomiflorum andP. esculentum. The karyotypes of all accessions were mostly symmetrical and mainly comprised of meta- and submetacentric chromosomes with little variation in length among them within each karyotype. Investigation of chromosome association during metaphase I of meiosis revealed that the frequency of bivalents/cell was the highest among all investigated diploid, tetraploid and hexaploid accessions. Univalents were also frequently encountered in various accessions. These results may indicate that segmental alloploidy has been the major process by which polyploid species have originated.  相似文献
