The capacity of a soil to supply roots with water and nutrients for crop growth is important when defining sustainable land management which implies maintenance of production and reduction of production risks. Not only the amount of available water is important but also its accessibility, which differs among different soil structures. Different structures within one soil series were associated with three types of management: (i) conventional, temporary grassland (Conv), (ii) biodynamic, temporary grassland (Bio) and (iii) conventional permanent grassland (Perm). Transpiration of barley plants, under identical circumstances, and the associated rooting patterns, were measured in five large undisturbed cores from each of the three soil structures. Management had significantly changed bulk density, organic matter content and porosity. Measured transpiration showed significant differences with highest amounts for Perm followed by Conv and lowest amounts for Bio. Rooting pattern characteristics, defined as the relation between a series of hypothetical extraction zones around each root and the volumes of excluded soil were determined for the three structures. These rooting pattern characteristics were most favourable for Perm, followed by Bio and Conv, respectively. The water supply characteristics, defined as the number of days the soil can satisfy a transpiration demand of 5 mm d-1 as a function of a hypothetical extraction zone, reflects the capacity of the soil to supply roots with water. These water supply characteristics combined with the rooting pattern characteristics were used to quantify the accessibility of soil water. Accessibility was highest for Perm and Conv with 95% and 94% respectively, followed by Bio with 68%. When used in a simulation model and compared with simulations implicitly assuming total accessibility, measured transpirations were better simulated by introducing the expression for water accessibility.  相似文献

The psychological side effects of self-regulatory treatment (a combination of relaxation, thermal biofeedback, and cognitive therapy) for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) were compared among 20 successfully treated patients, 12 unsuccessfully treated patients, and 9 patients who merely monitored symptoms for 12 weeks. Pretreatment and posttreatment scores on the Beck Depression Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and Psychosomatic Symptom Checklist were examined. Successfully treated patients had significant (p<.01) reductions on all measures and significantly greater reductions on depression and state anxiety than the symptom monitoring group. Interestingly, the failures also showed a significant (p=.027) reduction in trait anxiety and no significant increases on other measures.  相似文献

A novel approach was used to compare male and female recombination rates in wheat. Doubled haploid lines were developed from an F1 using two distinct approaches: the anther-culture technique and the Hordeum bulbosum system, from which sets of lines were developed from male and female meioses, respectively. The genotype of the lines was established at RFLP and isozyme markers polymorphic on chromosomes of homoeologous groups 6 and 7, and male and female linkage maps were calculated using this information. The markers in one segment of chromosome 6B exhibited disturbed segregation frequencies in the anther-culture population. The male and female maps differed significantly in recombination frequency between some markers on two chromosomes, and these were consistent in direction within chromosomes and inconsistent in direction between chromosomes. In two of the four chromosomes studied the male map was much longer than the female map. These results suggest that significant differences may exist in male and female recombination frequencies in bread wheat which are specific to certain chromosomal segments but are inconsistent in direction between chromosomes. Other factors, such as environmental influences, may also be important in creating differences.  相似文献

Summary Stationary phase cells of strain phr/MC 2 ofE. coli are not photoreactivable but the frequency of UV-induced mutations to low Streptomycine-resistance (S 3, 3/ml) is decreased strongly by illumination with light of fluorescence tubes (310 to 500 nm) after UV-irradiation. Also dark-reversion (DRM) of these mutations due to keeping UV-irradiated cells in saline is observed. Illumination before UV-irradiation decreases the frequency of the mutations (photoprotection against mutation=PPM) to the same extent as the combined action of photoreversion (PRM) and DRM. The lag-phase of cell division is prolonged strongly by illumination from 80 min without light to 150 min by the light-dose of highest activity. The additional lag is nearly the same if the illumination is done before, after or without UV-irradiation; this lag is about additive to the small lag caused by UV. Pre-illumination of the stationary-phase cells does not cause photoprotection against killing (PP), it even decreases the survival after high UV-doses. The observations support the hypothesis that PRM in this strain may be indirect, i.e. caused by the light-induced additional division lag which enhances the dark repair of UV-premutations. Also spontaneous premutations which are apparently present in the stationary-phase cells seem to be influenced by the light in this way.  相似文献

Summary Wheat seedlings were grown under a 14-hour photoperiod and the first leaves excised at the end of the eighth dark period. The effect of treatments causing wilting on the inhibitor- content of such leaves was studied.When leaves were rapidly wilted (i.e. to a 6% fresh weight loss) and extracted immediately, the amount of inhibitor- per leaf was found to be the same as in fresh turgid leaves. However, when the leaves were maintained in a wilted condition in darkness for a period of 110 minutes, there was a marked increase in inhibitor- content.The greater the degree of wilting (i.e. up to about a 9% loss in fresh weight) the greater the eventual inhibitor- content. Moreover, the increment in inhibitor- was shown to be temperature dependent.The time lapse requirement and the temperature dependency of the inhibitor- formation suggest an enzymic conversion from a precursor.If a similar phenomenon occurs during the wilting of intact plants then the increase in this growth inhibitor might play a role in some of the physiological changes which accompany water stress.  相似文献

This paper describes a model of a neural visual system of a higher animal, in which the capability of pattern recognition develops adaptively. To produce the adaptability, we adopted self-organizing cells, and with them modeled feature-detecting cells which were discovered by Hubel and Wiesel and whose plasticity was found by Blakemore and Cooper. Combining the self-organizing cells and the learning principle of a Perceptron-type system, we constructed a model of the whole visual system. The model is also equipped with an eye movement control mechanism for gazing, which reduces the number of selforganizing cells required for pattern recognition, thus contributing to their quick self-organization. Computer simulation and an experiment using a hardware simulator showed that self-organizing cells quickly become sensitive to the features often seen and that the resulted system can classify patterns with a rather small number of feature-detecting cells.  相似文献

Summary Fundamentally, theoretically, there is only one process underlying genetic and cultural evolution: natural selection. Organism fitness-enhancement (adaptive significance) is one of its practical mechanisms; group formation and maintenance is another, often but not always through fitness-enhancement; and need-fulfillment is still another. If Durham can accept that formulation, and switch from organism-thinking to instruction-thinking (Cloak, 1975: 178), he will free himself from two handicaps: First, he can forget his worries about reductionism and determinism (1976a: 100, 101). Under this general theory of natural selection, cultural evolutionis biological evolution, continued by other (nongenetic) means. Second, he will spare himself the appearance of anthropomorphism, mentalism, and wishy-washiness attendant on his discussion of kinds of significance, other than adaptive significance, of cultural behaviors (1976a: 102–106, 115).  相似文献

1. The dependence on external hydrogen ion concentration of the carrier-mediated components of the uptakes of indol-3-yl acetic acid (IAA) and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4D) by suspension-cultured crown gall cells from Parthenocissus tricuspidata Planch. is examined. The initiall rates of uptake of IAA and 2,4 D from 0.30 mol/l solutions exhibit pH optima of approximately pH 5.0 and pH 4.0 respectively.-2. The inherent difficulties, especially at low pH, of estimating the carrier-mediated uptake component in the presence of the large diffusive uptake of undissociated acid are discussed.-3. At pH 5.0, the uptakes of the two auxins are characterised by similar Michaelis Constants (0.65 and 0.80 mol/l) and Maximum Velocities (0.87 and 1.0 pmol/min/mg cells) for IAA and 2,4D respectively.-4. A dependence of carrier-mediated auxin uptake on cations other than hydrogen ions could not be demonstrated. A DNA methyltransferase activity was identified in a strain of Bacillus thuringiensis that was found to protect DNA from cleavage by the restriction endonuclease HaeIII at overlapping sites. Summary The aim of this study was to determine whether DNA variations could be detected in regenerated pea plants. Two different genotypes were analyzed by cytogenetic and molecular techniques: the Dolce Provenza cultivar and the 5075 experimental line. Dolce Provenza regenerated plants showed a reduction in DNA content, particularly at the level of unique sequences and ribosomal genes. Moreover, regeneration was associated with an increase in DNA methylation of both internal and external cytosines of the CCG sequence. On the other hand, the DNA content of the 5075 line remained stable after regeneration. DNA reduction was found only in 5075 plants regenerated from callus cultures maintained for long incubation periods (about a year). The DNA variations observed are discussed both in relation to the genotype source and the role of tissue-culture stress.  相似文献

To establish a protocol suited for the molecular characterization of root induction the influences of explant position, etiolation state and orientation as well as temperature and light intensity on root and callus formation were investigated. Depending on these factors stem discs of Malus incubated on indole-3-butyric acid containing medium and subsequently on hormone-free medium regenerated roots and callus of filamentous and smooth texture to a varying extent. Concentration and incubation duration of indole-3butyric acid strongly affected rooting and the production of smooth callus. Moreover smooth callus was profuse at the low light levels applied during rooting. Rooting efficiency decreased and filamentous callus increased between 19°C and 25°C. Explants close to the shoot apex displayed reduced rooting efficiency and profuse filamentous callus. Using the mutational enhancement method and the Ames test, the mutagenicity and potential carcinogenicity of quinoline and its derivatives were determined and compared. Quinoline, 8-hydroxyquinoline, 5-hydroxyquinoline, 8-hydroxyquinoline sulfate, 6-nitroquinoline, 8-nitroquinoline, and 3-methylquinoline were mutagenic in the Ames direct plating test on TA 98 and TA 100 with activating system (S-9) from the rat liver. These compounds were not mutagenic in the mutational enchancement test onEscherichia coli HCR+ strain. 5,7-Dichloro-8-hydroxyquinoline, isoquinoline, and 2-chloroquinoline were nonmutagenic without or with S-9 in both the Ames and mutational enhancement test system. The compounds chloroquine, primaquine diphosphate, quinine hydrobromide, quinine hydrochloride, quinine lactate, quinine urea hydrochloride, quinine ethylcarbonate, quinine dihydrochloride, beta quinine quinine valerate, and quinine glycerophosphate were nonmutagenic with and without S-9 in the Ames test but mutagenic (20–60 g/ml) in the mutational enhancement test method onEscherichia coli HCR+ strains. The observations reported here point out that the Ames test responds negatively to several quinoline derivatives that are positive in the mutational enchancement test method.  相似文献

Exchange-out of amide tritium from labeled -subunit of 33 complex of F0F1-ATP synthase was not accelerated by ATP, suggesting that hemagglutinin-type transition of coiled-coil structure did not occur in -subunit. Local topology of nucleotide binding site and switch II region of G-protein resemble those of F1- subunit and other proteins which catalyze ATP-triggered reactions. Probably, binding of nucleotide to F0F1-ATP synthase induces conformational change of the switch II-like region with transforming subunit structure from open to closed form and this transformation results in loss of hydrogen bonds with the subunit, thus enabling the subunit to move.  相似文献

Summary Simulation models have recently been used to suggest that spatial heterogeneity, acting on small spatial scales within local populations, may allow parasitoids and other natural enemies to regulate host or prey populations in ways that would not be detected by conventional (k-factor) analyses of life table data. However, additional study of these models suggests that local extinction may be a frequent event in the simulated interactions. The spreading of risk concept appears more applicable to the simulated populations than a classical view emphasizing tight regulation around stable equilibrium points. The spreading of risk viewpoint also appears to shed additional light on questions raised in the recent debate between Dempster (1983); Hassel (1985); Dempster and Pollard (1986), concerning the modeling of spatial heterogeneity and regulation in temperate-zone insect populations.  相似文献

Summary Darwin's phrase place in natural economy, andSpencer's term correspondence can be regarded as first attempts to express the organism-environment relationships. The same concept has more recently been approached from the point of view of (1) life-form, (2) external activities, and (3) habitat. Though all these points are interlocking, they have been stressed differently in the writings of American and European ecologists. It is proposed that the term niche would be most useful and rational if applied to the total of relationships between a living organism (population, species) and its complete environment, both biotic and abiotic.  相似文献

Fructose-6-phosphate phosphoketolase was purified from type strains of two species of the genus Bifidobacterium: B. globosum and B. dentium. The first species has a preferred animal habitat, like feces of animals and rumen of cattle; the latter is harboured in human habitats, like feces and dental caries of man. Two electrophoretic types of phosphoketolase (F6PPK) were previously distinguished and called animal and human type according to the habitat of the bifid organism. The purified preparations of these two phosphoketolases displayed very different optimum pH range, metal activator and molecular weight; outstanding difference was found in the substrate specificity: the enzyme from B. globosum was able to split xylulose-5-P as well as fructose-6-P, whereas the phosphoketolase from B. dentium appeared to be specific for fructose-6-P.  相似文献

Summary The location of the two nucleolar components, in meristematic root tip cells ofAllium cepa has been studied. The segregation of granular and fibrous components of the nucleoli was induced by adenosine-3deoxyriboside. The relationship between the ultrastructure and the stain affinities of both nucleolar regions has been determined by using different selective nucleolar stains.The pars fibrosa appears positive in the silver, lead, zinc, and methylen blue stains and shows a high ATPase activity.  相似文献

Thirty-two West African dwarf goats were exposed to temperature treatments: 20, 25, 30, 35, 35, 35, 30, 25, 20°C each lasting three days.Sixteen goats were kept in individual pens (I), the others in two group pens (G). Heat production (HP) and activity were recorded during 48 hours in each temperature treatment.Mean HP and ME intake were similar for G and I animals, but I animals had lower values than G animals at low chamber temperatures and higher values than G animals at high temperatures. Upper critical temperature was between 25°C and 30°C under an increasing T and between 30 and 35°C under a decreasing T. Adaptation of heat production and ME intake to a change in temperature of 5°C required at least six and possibly more than nine days.Diurnal variation in HP was large, up to 44% between extremes. Heterochromatin variation in Cryptobothrus chrysophorus   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Northern and southern races of the Australian grasshopper Cryptobothrus chrysophorus share the same diploid chromosome number (2n=23, 24). The northern race is differentiated from the southern by fixed extra blocks of heterochromatin located distally on five of the six medium pairs of autosomes (M4, 5, 6, 8 and 9). The megameric M7 pair, which is completely heterochromatic in both races, is also frequently larger in the northern race. Additionally, while there is considerable polymorphism for the presence of supernumerary heterochromatic segments on the two smallest autosome pairs (S10, 11) in both races, the precise character of this polymorphism is strikingly different between them. That found in the north is both more extensive and more variable. An analysis of the patterns of C-banding obtained in neuroblast c-mitoses indicates even more variation within and between races than was anticipated from the patterns of heteropycnosis seen at first prophase of male meiosis. Thus, while the distal blocks on the M4, 6, 8 and 9 elements in the northern race invariably C-band those of the M5 never do. On the other hand polymorphisms for C-bands on the M5, 6, 8 and 9 are seen in some populations of the southern race but in regions which are not visibly heteropycnotic at meiosis. Polymorphisms for the pattern of C-banding also occur in the northern race populations in the M4, 6, 8 and 9 elements and some of these are associated with clear length differences in the chromosomes concerned. Others involve differences in the expression of the distal C-bands in M8 and 9 which vary from dark to intermediate. The supernumerary segments on the S10 and 11 pairs are especially variable in respect of their C-banding properties. Some are entirely C-banded, some show no C-banding whatsoever and some are composed of both banded and unhanded regions. Banding is again most pronounced, however, in the northern race. Finally the character of the megameric M7 is strikingly different in the two races not only in respect of its size, which is sometimes larger than that of the south, but also in respect of the extent of C-banding which is always more complex in the northern form irrespective of its size.  相似文献

Summary Ethidium bromide (EB) and ultraviolet light (UV) in combination are known to produce a synergistic induction of petite mutants in yeast. Two other agents were combined with EB, 3-Carbethoxypsoralene (3 CPs) activated by 365 nm light or rays. EB in combination with 3 CPs also resulted in an enhanced production of petite mutants. After the photoaddition of 3 CPs in exponential phase cells, recovery of the petite mutation during dark liquid holding was inhibited by the presence of EB producing an enhanced number of petite mutants. The behavior of mitochondrial antibiotic resistance markers after individual and combined treatments with EB and 3 CPs indicates a random loss of markers after EB and a preferential loss of a certain region for the 3 CPs photoaddition. The combination of the two agents leads to an additivity of total drug marker losses rather than a synergistic loss. The combination of EB with rays produced no enhancement in petite induction. A combination of UV and 3 CPs showed a synergistic interaction for petite induction. These results indicate that the three agents, EB, UV and 3 CPs photoaddition may share a common repair step for mitochondrial lesions.  相似文献
