The food of Planaria torva was examined in the laboratory by exposing a range of potential prey to the triclad and observing prey mortality. Under these conditions P. torva fed mainly upon tubificid oligochaetes and gastropods. The former activity was regarded as untypical of the field situation and due to limitations of the laboratory habitat. The food of P. torva was determined in the field by taking monthly samples from October 1967 to May 1969 of a population living in Linlithgow Loch, West Lothian, Scotland. A serological technique was used to examine the gut contents of the field triclads. For reasons explained in the text, the prey organisms tested for serologically were gastropods, oligochaetes (Tubificidae), Asellus and chironomid larvae. Planaria torva fed most extensively on Gastropoda, Asellus was the second main food while Tubificidae and Chironomidae were taken only seasonally and in small numbers. The limited extent of feeding on tubificids supports the laboratory data. Small P. torva gave proportionately fewer positive reactions to the prey antisera than large individuals. This was explained by the fact that small individuals occurred most frequently in the warmer months and took smaller meals; both of these features shorten the detection period of food in the gut and therefore give fewer reactions. The diet of small and large P. torva was similar in the field and showed considerable overlap with that of Dugesia polychroa. The food of Polycelis tenuis, Dendrocoelum lacteum and Dugesia polychroa in Linlithgow Loch was described on an annual basis and the results confirmed earlier observations.  相似文献

SUMMARY. Using a serological technique, the extent of feeding upon snails by Polycelis tenuis was compared in habitats lacking and containing Dugesia polychroa which is the major triclad predator of snails. It was found that P. tenuis ate significantly more snails when D. polychroa was absent. It was concluded that in the field interspecific competition for snails between these two triclad species was a more powerful process than any social feeding by P. tenuis on snails captured by D. polychroa .
Feeding on snails as a group by P. tenuis and P. nigra in the habitat where the two triclads co-existed was of a similar magnitude and this was also true of their feeding on the common snail species and genera. Approximately 10% of the triclads gave a positive reaction to snail antisera.
Feeding on snails by P. nigra in the three habitats lacking D. polychroa was similar in extent and did not differ from that of P. tenuis . It was concluded that P. nigra would be similarly affected by the presence and absence of D. polychroa as shown for P. tenuis .
No definitive seasonal pattern was detected in the incidence of feeding upon snails by either Polycelis species but this may have been obscured by seasonal changes in the detection period of snail antigens due to temperature effects. There was some evidence that such feeding increased during the period when small snails were present in the population.  相似文献

Studies on energy transformation in the freshwater snail Pila globosa   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The effects of eleven chosen feeding levels ranging from 0 to 198 mg damp dry (plant) Ceratophyllum/g live snail/day on the absorption, conversion and metabolism of the snail Pila globosa (of 1 -9 g body weight) have been studied. Absorption rates increased from 3-0 to 21-0 mg dry food/g live snail/day in snails fed 3-4-28-8 mg dry food/g live snail/day. In these snails, absorption efficiency decreased from 87.5 to 73.0%. Conversion rates increased from 0-3 mg/g/day for snails receiving 23-4 mg/g/day to 2-7 mg/g/day for those fed maximum amounts, and the efficiency (K2) also increased from 1-9% to 130%. When compared to other gastropods, Pila globosa appears to be a poor convertor. During 30 days' starvation, the test individuals lost 4.4 mg dry body substance/g/day i.e. the maintenance cost was 14-7 cal/g live snail/day. The SDA increased by four times for those feeding on maximum rations in comparison to those receiving about 5 mg/g/day, i.e. the energy cost for converting food was increased four times.  相似文献

Abstract. The present experiments are part of a larger study designed to investigate the influence of husbandry parameters on the life history of the ramshorn snail, Marisa cornuarietis, in order to identify suitable husbandry conditions for maintaining multi‐generation populations in the laboratory for use in ecotoxicological testing. In this paper we focus on the effects of a combination of food types and feeding frequencies (i.e., the frequency with which the snails were offered food) on juvenile growth and survival at different temperatures. Offspring produced in the laboratory by wild specimens of M. cornuarietis, from Puerto Rico, were used to test the effects of three types of food (lettuce, alginate with fish food, alginate with snail mix) fed at three frequencies (given ad libitum on 4/4, 2/4, or 1/4 d) on juvenile survival and growth. The 4‐d feeding regimens were repeated four times, giving a total of 16 d for the experiments. The experiments were conducted at two temperatures (22° and 25°C) under a 12 h light:12 h dark photoperiod. Juvenile growth rates increased with increasing feeding frequency for all food types. The most rapid growth rates occurred in the high‐frequency lettuce treatments and the slowest growth rates in the low‐frequency lettuce and alginate with snail mix treatments. Juvenile snails grew faster at 25° than at 22°C, and mortality was about twice as high at the lower temperature. Growth rates were used to provide a rough estimate of time to maturity, which was determined to take about twice as long at 22° than at 25°C. The results showed that lettuce is the best food if supplied in abundance, but effects on growth are very dependent on feeding frequency and temperature. We conclude that 25°C is a more appropriate temperature for maintaining populations than 22°C, that lettuce provides a suitable food source, and that food should be supplied continuously for husbandry and toxicity testing of populations of M. cornuarietis.  相似文献

The feeding behaviour of the intertidal trochid Melagraphia aethiops (Gmelin) on a sheltered stony shore was investigated. The effects of snail size, season, and shore level on feeding were examined. Feeding was examined in the laboratory in aquaria fitted with glass plates coated with algal and detrital films. Rates of radula rasping and the frequency of feeding bouts (feeding activity) were measured.

Radula rate varied little with snail size and large snails were 35% more active feeders than small snails. Small snails, however, consumed three to four times as much food per radula rasp, on a unit weight basis, as large snails. Winter acclimatization involved an increased tolerance of low water temperatures and an overall 60% decrease in radula rasping rate compared with summer acclimatized animals. Concurrently, field crawling rates decreased 71% during the summer-winter transition suggesting that lower food intake was balanced by reduced locomotory activity. High and low shore inhabiting snails showed little difference in radula rasping rates. High shore snails, however, compensated for their shorter feeding periods by being 37% more active in feeding and crawling in the field 40% faster than low shore snails.  相似文献

The helminth endoparasite fauna in four Arctic charr morphs, Salvelinus alpinus (L.), small benthivorous (SB), large benthivorous (LB), planktivorous (PL) and piscivorous (PI) charr, from Thingvallavatn, Iceland consisted of: Crepidostomum farionis (Trematoda: Allocreadiidae); Diplosttomum sp. (Trematoda: Diplostomatidae); Eubothrium salvelini; Diphyllobothrium dendriticum; D. ditremum (Cestoda: Pseudophyllidae); Proteocephalus longicollis (Cestoda: Proteocepha-lidae): and Philonema oncorhynchi (Nematoda: Filariidae). The morphs exhibited distinctive patterns in prevalences and parasite burdens (mean intensity and mean relative density of parasites). SB charr had high prevalence and parasite burden of the eye fluke Diplostomum sp. and none to very light infections of the other parasite species. LB charr had relatively high prevalence and parasite burden of the intestinal fluke C. farionis , whereas infections of the remaining parasite species were light to moderate. PL and PI charr had high prevalences and worm burdens of Diphyllobothrium spp. and P. longicollis . PL charr differed from PI charr in higher worm burden off P. longicollis and lighter burden of £. salvelini . Prevalences of P. oncorhynchi were high in PL and PI charr. Association of parasite intensities and age and length offish were investigated. The different infection patterns among the morphs agree well with their partitioning in food and habitat utilization, and confirm that there is a high degree of ecological segregation between the morphs. The results demonstrate the importance of ecological factors influencing transmission efficiency of parasites to the fish host.  相似文献

A defect of hepatic remodeling of phospholipids (PL) is seen in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and steatohepatitis (NASH) indicating pivotal role of PL metabolism in this disease. The deletion of group VIA calcium-independent phospholipase A2 (iPla2β) protects ob/ob mice from hepatic steatosis (BBAlip 1861, 2016, 440–461), however its role in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced NASH is still elusive. Here, wild-type and iPla2β-null mice were subjected to chronic feeding with HFD for 6 months. We showed that protection was observed in iPla2β-null mice with an attenuation of diet-induced body and liver-weight gains, liver enzymes, serum free fatty acids as well as hepatic TG and steatosis scores. iPla2β deficiency under HFD attenuated the levels of 1-stearoyl lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), lysophosphatidylethanolamine (LPE), and lysophosphatidylinositol (LPI) as well as elevation of hepatic arachidonate, arachidonate-containing cholesterol esters and prostaglandin E2. More importantly, this deficiency rescued a defect in PL remodeling and attenuated the ratio of saturated and unsaturated PL. The protection by iPla2β deficiency was not observed during short-term HFD feeding of 3 or 5 weeks which showed no PL remodeling defect. In addition to PC/PE, this deficiency reversed the suppression of PC/PI and PE/PI among monounsaturated PL. However, this deficiency did not modulate hepatic PL contents and PL ratios in ER fractions, ER stress, fibrosis, and inflammation markers. Hence, iPla2β inactivation protected mice against hepatic steatosis and obesity during chronic dietary NASH by correcting PL remodeling defect and PI composition relative to PC and PE.  相似文献

The effect of chronic exposure (35 days) to sub-lethal concentrations of copper (17-212 ppb) and zinc (41-525 ppb) on growth of Farfantepenaeus paulensis postlarvae 17 days old (PL(17)) was analysed. The effects of acute exposure of PL(17) to the same metal on food ingestion and oxygen consumption were also evaluated. Studies were performed using copper and zinc singly, and in a mixture of equipotent concentrations (1:2.5). Chronic exposure to copper (85 and 212 ppb) and zinc (106, 212 and 525 ppb) reduced PL(17) growth. Acute exposure to copper (212 ppb) and zinc (525 ppb) reduced the number of Artemia sp. predated during 30 min and the positive feeding response induced by L-isoleucine. Despite of the lower positive feeding response when PL(17) were exposed to zinc, a significant difference from control condition was not seen. Oxygen consumption was reduced by all copper and zinc concentrations tested. The mean reduction was approximately 32%. The copper zinc-mixture did not modify food consumption and feeding response, or the oxygen consumption of the PL(17). The inhibition of food and oxygen consumption induced by copper and zinc could explain, at least in part, the long-term reduction of growth observed in chronically exposed PL(17). Our results also suggest that the inhibition of food consumption induced by copper is possibly due to an effect on chemosensory mechanisms. Finally, an antagonism between copper and zinc was observed, when were employed to analyse feeding behaviour and aerobic metabolism after acute exposure.  相似文献

During a 27-hr period of food deprivation, Biomphalaria glabrata infected with Schistosoma mansoni had lower heartbeat rates and locomotor activities than did controls that were feeding ad lib. However, there was no difference between the cercarial emergence from control and experimental snails either before, during, or after the period of food deprivation. No correlation was found between the locomotor activity of the snail and the number of cercariae emerging from the snail in continuous light. Our results indicated that the emergence of S. mansoni cercariae from B. glabrata was not affected by the heartbeat rate or locomotor activity of the snail. The factors controlling the rhythm of S. mansoni cercarial emergence from B. glabrata may be independent of the snail.  相似文献

1. Biological invasions have become a serious threat to ecosystems worldwide. Various factors can contribute to the success of biological invasion. We examined how different macrophyte food affected feeding and life‐history traits of the invasive herbivorous snail Pomacea canaliculata, and whether differences in snail life‐history traits could explain its successful infestation of agricultural and non‐agricultural wetlands in Asia. 2. We tested five cultivated and five wild semi‐aquatic macrophytes. Snail daily feeding rate varied substantially with plant species, ranging from 1.3% to 22% of its body mass. Snails fed with four (Amaranthus gangeticus, Apium graveolens dulce, Ipomoea aquatica and Nasturtium officinale) of the five cultivated macrophyte species exhibited high survivorship, fast growth and high fecundity. Snails fed with Colocasia esculenta, however, grew poorly, did not reproduce and eventually died. 3. Of the five wild species (Eichhornia crassipes, Ludwigia adscendens, Murdannia nudiflora, Myriophyllum aquaticum and Polygonum hydropiper), M. nudiflora supported a high snail survival, but snails had slower growth and lower fecundity than those reared on the four palatable cultivated species. Snails fed with L. adscendens grew substantially slower than those fed with M. nudiflora, and produced only a small clutch of eggs. Snails fed with E. crassipes, M. aquaticum and P. hydropiper had very low survivorship, grew very little and did not reproduce. 4. We determined six plant properties and their correlation with the feeding, growth and reproduction of the apple snails. Cultivated macrophytes in general had a higher nutritional value and lower physical and chemical defences. Phenolic content was negatively correlated with snail feeding rate, while plant nitrogen and phosphorus contents were positively correlated with snail egg production and growth, respectively. 5. These results indicate that, due to their higher nutritional value and lower chemical and physical defences, cultivated macrophytes are in general desirable for the apple snail which may partly explain its successful invasion into wet agricultural areas in Asia. This snail may also selectively graze poorly defended wild macrophytes in non‐agricultural wetlands, leading to changes in floral diversity and wetland functioning. Management of this and other apple snails with similar life‐history traits should thus focus on the prevention of their further spread.  相似文献

We used time-lapse underwater video systems in the subtidal zone of the Mingan Islands, eastern Canada, to examine behavioural interactions of four kleptoparasites with the sea star Leptasterias polaris when it was feeding on infaunal (buried) clams. Departures of L. polaris from its prey coincided with interactions with kleptoparasites in 10 out of 10 filmed feeding bouts on the large clam Spisula polynyma, compared with only four out of 10 of filmed bouts on the smaller clam Mya truncata. The sea star's abandoning of the prey was most often caused by interactions with another sea star, Asterias vulgaris, a potential predator. The whelk (a carnivorous snail), Buccinum undatum, and the crabs Hyas araneus and Cancer irroratus, also kleptoparasitized L. polaris, especially when A. vulgaris was present. Comparisons of feeding bouts in the presence and absence of kleptoparasites showed that at least 10.4% of the prey mass captured by L. polaris was lost to kleptoparasites. Simultaneous current meter data showed that the movement of A. vulgaris and B. undatum to sites where L. polaris was feeding on S. polynyma was upstream, suggesting chemodetection of food odours. Crabs in the vicinity may also use visual cues. Leptasterias polaris is the only carnivore that can efficiently extract large clams from the sediments and therefore its foraging may supply a substantial part of the diet of kleptoparasites. Total ethanolic crude extracts from soya bean (Glycine max L. Merrill) PI 227687 and `Davis', three purified fractions (A, B and C) from PI 227687, and pure rutin were tested for their effect on the growth of Trichoplusia ni (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) larvae, from egg hatching to pupation. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), followed by bicoordinate utilisation plots, was used to remove the effect of feeding time from consumption and weight of pupae and to separate pre- ingestive and post- ingestive effects of different diets on T. ni growth. Survival, pupal weight, and feeding time of T. ni were all negatively affected by PI 227687 total extracts. Pupal weight and consumption remained affected by diet, after removing the effect of feeding time by ANCOVA. Larvae fed on the `Davis' extract diet grew larger and consumed more rapidly a larger amount of food than those fed on PI 227687 and control diets. T. ni pupal weight was strongly influenced by consumption. In general, those insects that consumed more food were heavier but larvae fed on diet containing PI 227687 extract grew less than the others, irrespective of the amount of ingested and digested food. The feeding time was adversely affected by PI 227687 fraction A, composed of two flavonol glycosides (rutin and quercetin 3-O-glucosylgalactoside) and of an isoflavone glycoside (genistin). Survival and pupal weight were not affected, although the consumption and assimilation of ingested food was lower when larvae were fed on fractions A and C. The toxicity of the higher rutin concentration (2%) was similar to that observed when the insects were fed on unfractioned PI 227687, except that effects on food consumption were not observed. Results indicated that the feeding deterrence of PI 227687 must be caused by other compounds from fractions A and C. Moreover, rutin, acting as an antibiotic, appears to account for the adverse effects of PI 227687 on the physiology of T. ni.  相似文献

The gastropod T. palustris is one of the major species responsible for leaf consumption and degration within the Indo-Pacific mangrove forests, and it strongly competes with herbivorous sesarmid crabs in consuming fallen leaves. This snail feeds at high and low tides and it is able to locate food items by means of chemical cues. The aim of this study was to assess the food preferences of T. palustris and to define its feeding strategies at low and high tides, by conducting field trials on water-borne mediated food location at high tide, grazing rate and the chemical attraction exerted by different mangrove leaves. The results showed that T. palustris was able to perceive underwater grazed leaves. In addition, we demonstrated that T. palustris consumes all the mangrove species (preferentially the Rhizophoraceae leaves) but Xilocarpus granatum. Moreover, this snail is differentially attracted to different mangrove species: the major attractive power is wielded by the rhizophoracean species and Pemphis acidula, while X. granatum does not attract this snail at all. The efficacy and adaptive value of a chemically mediated food searching strategies is unquestionable since by using this ability T. palustris can locate and reach the leaves it preferentially consumes. Moreover, T. palustris is the only macrobenthic species of East Africa mangroves able to search, detect and consume mangrove leaves at both high and low tides. Such an expanded feeding window permits T. palustris to occupy temporal niches left empty by the sesarmid crabs.  相似文献

The Mekong giant catfish Pangasianodon gigas is endemic to the Mekong River basin, and is recognized as endangered species, largely due to overfishing and development of the river basin. We monitored food intake of P. gigas in a stable environment in an aquarium over a 6-year period and analyzed their feeding rhythm and fasting periods. The daily food intake for each fish was recorded from 18 June 2004 to 17 June 2010. The feeding rhythm or pattern was determined by the fast Fourier transform (FFT) analysis. The FFT analysis revealed that different cycles of feeding rhythm (168.8, 313.1, and 365.3 days) in three catfishes and no observable cycles in two catfishes. However, three catfishes showed subordinate peaks with approximately 365 days (365.3 days for all). These suggest that, at least, four of five catfish had have approximately 365-days feeding cycle. We also showed that all catfish undergo long-term fasting periods (> 20 days). Of note, the feeding/fasting pattern coincides with the wet/dry seasons in Thailand, which also corresponds to the abundance of the catfish food resource (Cladophora spp.). We found that P. gigas exhibit a seasonal feeding rhythm that is synchronized by food availability. Furthermore, we found that the seasonal feeding rhythm was gradually dampened over time, suggesting that the observed seasonal feeding rhythm with long-term fasting of the catfish is likely controlled by an endogenous clock system. To our knowledge, this is the first case of quantification of the seasonal feeding rhythm with fasting periods in teleost fish.  相似文献

1. By selective grazing, invasive grazers can alter macrophyte‐herbivore relationships in shallow freshwater bodies. Evaluating the palatability of macrophytes and understanding the determinants of plant palatability can help predict grazing impact. In no‐choice feeding assays, we tested the palatability of 21 species of freshwater macrophytes to the invasive freshwater apple snail Pomacea canaliculata. 2. Daily feeding rate varied greatly with plant species, ranging from 1.1 to 22% of snail body mass. We assessed six plant properties and examined their correlation with feeding rate. Total nitrogen content was positively related, and C:N ratio and dry matter content (DMC) negatively related, to snail feeding rate. There was no significant correlation between snail feeding rate and plant phenolic content, but the feeding rate on Myriophyllum aquaticum (the plant with the highest phenolic content) was very low. 3. We repeated the feeding assays for 15 species that were not palatable as fresh leaves with reconstituted plant tissues formed by mixing ground up dried leaves with agar. The feeding rate still differed greatly among macrophyte species. Phragmites australis and Vallisneria natans (two species with the highest DMC) were eaten much more as reconstituted plant than as fresh leaves, indicating that structure (i.e. DMC) may be important in their defence against snail herbivory. For two plants (M. aquaticum and Alternanthera philoxeroides) that had moderate amounts of nitrogen/phosphorus but were consumed very little as fresh and reconstituted tissues, we incorporated their extracts into a palatable agar‐based food. The extracts from both species greatly reduced snail feeding rate, indicating the presence of chemical defences in these two species. 4. These results indicated that feeding was affected by several plant traits. The snail favoured plants with a high nitrogen content and avoided plants with a high DMC. Only a few plants possessed chemical feeding deterrents that were effective against this snail. Given the invasive spread of P. canaliculata in Asia, ecologists and managers should consider plant palatability when selecting plants for use in wetland restoration and when predicting the impact of further invasion by this species.  相似文献

Summary In the laboratory and field, we examined how periphyton (food of snails) and predatory crayfish influenced snail distribution in Trout Lake, a permanent, northern Wisconsin lake. Laboratory experiments (with no crayfish) tested the importance of periphyton biomass in determining snail preference among rocks, and among rock, sand, and macrophyte substrates. Among rocks with four different amounts of periphyton, periphyton biomass and the number of Lymnaea emarginata, Physa spp., and Amnicola spp. were positively related. A similar, but non-significant, trend occurred for Helisoma anceps. A field experiment at a site in Trout Lake where predation risk was low confirmed the preference by snails for periphyton covered rocks; more snails colonized rocks with periphyton than rocks without. When given a choice of rock, sand, and macrophytes in the laboratory, L. emarginata preferred high periphyton biomass and rock. Laboratory and field results contrasted with the distribution of snails in Trout Lake; no snails occurred in areas with abundant periphyton-covered rocks, but snails were abundant nearby on scattered rocks with little periphyton. However, where snails were absent, crayfish were abundant (14.5 crayfish-trap–1-day–1), and where snails were abundant, crayfish were rare (3.2 crayfish-trap–1-day–1), suggesting that crayfish predation reduced snails. The hypothesis that the negative association between snail and periphyton biomass resulted from snail grazing was supported by the results of a field snail enclosure-exclosure experiment (1 m2 cages; n=3). All experiments and observations therefore suggest that: 1) crayfish predation is more important than a preference for high periphyton biomass in determining snail distribution in Trout Lake; 2) periphyton biomass is negtively related to snail grazing; and 3) crayfish had a positive indirect effect on periphyton by preying on grazing snails.  相似文献
