Damage caused by wood-pigeons, Columba palumbus, to spring cabbage and Brussels sprouts was measured during three winters in two areas in the Vale of Evesham, Worcestershire. In one area (experimental) special attempts were made to reduce pigeon damage in addition to the normal efforts of the growers. In the other (control) area no such additional measures were taken. There was slightly more damage in 1969-70, but low market prices made it less important than in 1968-9 or 1970-1. There was no significant difference in any season between the damage in the control and experimental areas. No damage was caused to Brussels-sprout buttons as the birds ate only the tops of the plants; they preferred Brussels sprouts to cabbages and it is likely that the presence of the former helped to reduce the amount of damage to nearby cabbage fields. The amount of damage was not correlated with the amount spent on crop protection; actual damage was not correlated with the grower's estimates in the control area. In the second season a very intensive shooting campaign in the experimental area did not result in less damage, but the movements of local inhabitants and farm workers near a village did afford protection. The significance of the damage in the Vale and elsewhere is assessed in relation to the economics of crop production, the cropping pattern for cabbages and the behaviour and ecology of the wood-pigeon.  相似文献

Wetlands as a component of discharge areas have been reduced to mere stream channels in the larger part of The Netherlands. The original shape and condition are described with help of data from the past and from some small remnants. The typical Dutch type of running water is the lowland stream, fed predominantly by rain and groundwater. Its nature is nutrient-poor in the upper course and eutrophying gradually downstream. The chemical composition of streamwater, the vegetation in the floodplain and the flora and fauna in the stream reflect this gradient. Some attention is paid to the amount and cycling of minerals and nutrients. It is shown that the input of nutrients is not a limiting factor for primary production, but under natural conditions light is limiting. Threats to stream wetlands are the composition of the precipitation, fertilization of the discharge area and water management measures such as draining and canalization. As a result perspectives for a qualitative recovery are unfavourable. Restoration of the shape of streams, however, is more prospective and several restoration programs are in execution.  相似文献

Cerebral concussion is a physiological disturbance in the brain that follows a blow on the head. The cardinal symptom is a disturbance in consciousness varying from a complete loss of consciousness to a dazed state. The phenomenon is self-limited and completely reversible.In cerebral contusion there is actual injury to the brain. The symptoms that result vary according to the amount and location of the damage. A very small amount of damage in certain areas of the brain may be fatal, while extensive damage in other areas will be survived.Even when a patient is unconscious after a head injury, certain simple neurologic tests can be done to determine with some accuracy the extent and location of brain damage. When the patient regains consciousness, further bedside tests can be carried out to increase the accuracy of diagnosis.Careful observation of the patient at frequent intervals is necessary to judicious application of appropriate treatment. The physician must be on the alert constantly for signs of intracranial hemorrhage and should be ready to intervene surgically if necessary.In most cases of injury to the head, treatment consists of supplying to the patient elements that are necessary to maintain physiologic conditions and of combating disorders arising from specific injuries to the brain.  相似文献

Objective

Incontinence is an important health problem. Effectively treating incontinence could lead to important health gains in patients and caregivers. Management of incontinence is currently suboptimal, especially in elderly patients. To optimise the provision of incontinence care a global optimum continence service specification (OCSS) was developed. The current study evaluates the costs and effects of implementing this OCSS for community-dwelling patients older than 65 years with four or more chronic diseases in the Netherlands.

Method

A decision analytic model was developed comparing the current care pathway for urinary incontinence in the Netherlands with the pathway as described in the OCSS. The new care strategy was operationalised as the appointment of a continence nurse specialist (NS) located with the general practitioner (GP). This was assumed to increase case detection and to include initial assessment and treatment by the NS. The analysis used a societal perspective, including medical costs, containment products (out-of-pocket and paid by insurer), home care, informal care, and implementation costs.

Results

With the new care strategy a QALY gain of 0.005 per patient is achieved while saving €402 per patient over a 3 year period from a societal perspective. In interpreting these findings it is important to realise that many patients are undetected, even in the new care situation (36%), or receive care for containment only. In both of these groups no health gains were achieved.

Conclusion

Implementing the OCSS in the Netherlands by locating a NS in the GP practice is likely to reduce incontinence, improve quality of life, and reduce costs. Furthermore, the study also highlighted that various areas of the continence care process lack data, which would be valuable to collect through the introduction of the NS in a study setting.  相似文献

Biomedical scientific research in the Netherlands has a good reputation worldwide. Quantitatively, the university medical centres (UMCs) deliver about 40?% of the total number of scientific publications of this research. Analysis of the bibliometric output data of the UMCs shows that their research is highly cited. These output-based analyses also indicate the high impact of cardiovascular scientific research in these centres, illustrating the strength of this research in the Netherlands. A set of six joint national cardiovascular research topics selected by the UMCs can be recognised. At the top are heart failure, rhythm disorder research and atherosclerosis. National collaboration of top scientists in consortia in these three areas is successful in acquiring funding of large-scale programs. Our observations suggest that funding national consortia of experts focused on a few selected research topics may increase the international competitiveness of cardiovascular research in the Netherlands.  相似文献

The p53 protein is one of the most important tumor suppressor proteins. The most prevailing property of this tumor suppressor protein is its activation in response to DNA damage which counteracts the propagation of genetic alterations to daughter cells under conditions that provoke mutagenesis. In response to DNA damage and some other kinds of cellular stress the turnover of p53 is reduced or completely switched-off, which leads to a strong increase in the amount of the p53 protein and subsequently to the implementation of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. Although post-translational modifications of p53 certainly contribute to the activation of p53 under physiologic conditions, an increase in the amount of the protein e.g. after overexpression, is sufficient for p53's deadly activities. This makes this tumor suppressor protein an interesting target for cancer therapy. This article summarizes the most important principles for the regulation of p53, with a particular focus on recent findings. Furthermore, open questions and possible future directions shall be discussed.  相似文献

The dry summer of 1976 triggered a wholesale installation of sprinkler systems for agriculture. This dry summer also revealed areas in The Netherlands most susceptible to drought, namely sandy regions and the coastal fringe. This resulted in distribution of Rhine water to new areas, and in quantities hitherto unknown. The Second National Water Management Plan (1982) consequently focussed on enlarging the capacity of water distribution works. This distribution has led to a multitude of ecological effects, such as changes in salinity and nutrient concentration, as well as the spreading of contaminants. Consequently, the Third National Water Management Plan (1990) includes fewer distribution works because of the adverse environmental effects and the reduced feasibility due to increasing costs and decreasing agricultural benefits.A climatic change as predicted may result in climatic conditions in The Netherlands resembling those of France or the Mediterranean, implying drier summers and more precipitation in winter. An increased frequency of dry summers will no doubt revive water distribution plans now shelved and may even bring new ones to the drawing board. An increase in Rhine water distribution will have serious consequences for many aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, as will a lowering of the groundwater table. In this paper we will discuss the dilemma of choosing between allowing increased desiccation of wetlands as the climate becomes drier or increasing the distribution of Rhinewater and the potential ecological effects of these choices. In order to explain the experimentally obtained results with biomembranes it has been assumed, that the diameter of all vesicles, defined by a lipid bilayer, form a perfect crystal. Later on it appeared that biomembranes are liquid crystals. Nevertheless already with biomembranes as crystals it was possible to calculate the diameters of all existing vesicles. As shown in the present paper, the results with liquid crystals were identical to those with a perfect crystal-model. Here I demonstrate that the geometric progression of the diameters of vesicles of biomembranes is based on the entropy of the lipids and it is shown that the diameters of biomembranes fit four geometric series. The surface areas of these series of biomembranes can be approximated by the two geometric series published previously. Four hundred and forty bioassays with Scenedesmus quadricauda (Turp.) Bréb. as a test organism have been carried out with samples from canals and lakes in the western part of the Netherlands. The results are used to assess the algal growth potential (AGP) and to determine the limiting nutrient(s) for maximum biomass production. Special attention has been paid to the effects of deep-freezing and autoclaving as pretreatment of water samples on pH and nutrient concentrations.The AGP ranged from very low in the relatively isolated polder lakes to very high in canals and lakes, which form part of the basin system of Rijnland. The lowest yields are observed in nitrogen and phosphorus co-limited waters, while the highest are found in waters limited by nitrogen alone. AGP proved to be primarily determined by the amount of nitrogen, especially nitrate, in the samples and only secondarily by the amount of phosphorus.The observed ranges indicating phosphorus limitation, > 50 for inorganic and > 30 for total N/P ratios, lie considerably higher than reported so far. It is concluded that, once the relations between AGP and nutrients are established, AGP tests do not have to be carried out routinely, but still can be very useful in special studies, e.g. in lake restoration projects.  相似文献

In The Netherlands, the majority of heathlands and dry, unproductive grasslands have been brought into cultivation or afforested since the end of the 19th century. As a result, the original landscape has become highly fragmented. Nowadays, the heath habitat occurs in more or less isolated patches only. Many of these fragments show a small spatial variation in conditions. Ground-dwelling arthropods, with a low dispersal power and a specific preference for poor, sandy, open habitats, could disappear from such small fragments under the influence of temporarally unfavourable conditions. As recolonization from other fragments is often very difficult because of hostile surrounding areas, isolated small fragments that have lost their populations will remain unoccupied. The absence of some carabid species in such small, isolated fragments is thought to be the result of this situation. By introducing heathy corridors between such fragments, animals might be enabled to pass a hostile environment. This study shows that heathy road-side verges can possibly function as such a corridor. On the studied road-side verges, carabid species of poor sandy, open habitats were present, including the more rare species. Some species even found a better habitat at road-side verges than in adjacent poor sandy open areas. For other species the road-side verge seemed to be a more marginal habitat in which they occur only because of the presence of a suitable adjacent area. The distance to such an area, as well as the width of the poor sandy, open strip on the road-side verge seem to be important conditions for the occurrence of the latter species. In order to increase the survival chance in such a corridor, it is suggested that some wider strips or patches be created at the road-side verges, suitable for reproduction. Background

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained atrial arrhythmia and it is independently associated with an increased morbidity and mortality. As a result of the high prevalence of AF, the economic and clinical impact of the disease is substantial. This study describes the economic and clinical impact of AF in the Netherlands.

Methods

Epidemiological data on AF in the Netherlands were projected on population estimates of the Netherlands in 2009 and combined with data on the cost of AF and its interventions.

Results

Overall prevalence of AF in the Netherlands is 5.5% in the population over 55 years, corresponding to about 250,000 AF patients. The prevalence increases with age, and the mean age of AF patients is 69.3 years. Incidence of AF in the Netherlands varies with age, from 1188 new cases in the age group of 55 to 59 up to 7074 new cases in the age group 75 to 79. Total new cases amounts to 45,085 patients per year in the Netherlands. Total costs of AF in the Netherlands are € 583 million, of which the majority (70%) were accounted for by hospitalisations and in-hospital procedures. Pharmacotherapeutic management of AF totalled € 17 million in the Netherlands in 2009.

Discussion

AF is a serious disease with a high clinical and economic burden, especially due to hospitalisations as a result of cardiovascular events. The number of patients with AF in the Netherlands is considerable and will increase with the ageing population in the future.  相似文献

SUMMARY
The reported amount of damage done by pygmy beetle to the sugar-beet crop varies greatly with year and with region. Annual variation in damage is most strongly correlated with soil temperatures of the previous August, implying improved breeding success in warm summers. The value of predicting damage using this relationship is discussed. Damage is most severe in areas of intensive beet growing, particularly on low-lying areas around The Wash.
There was no relationship between damage and the numbers caught in a 12.2 m suction trap in the spring. It is suggested that much of the damage is done by beetles which are present in the beet fields at or shortly after sowing, having arrived there before the great majority fly in May-July.  相似文献

In Dutch forests the species density of vascular plants ranges from 1 to 61 species per 300 m2. The vascular plant species density is high in the coastal dunes, southern Limburg, river valleys, and fen areas. With the exception of southern Limburg, these areas constitute the Holocene part of the Netherlands. Low species densities occur in the sandy centre of the country. To a large extent, the areas of high species density of vascular plants follow the main river valleys. The bryophyte species densities range from 0 to 21 species per 300 m2. High bryophyte species densities occur mainly in the sandy centre and in the north-eastern part of the Netherlands. The highest species densities occur in fen woodlands and derelict coppices. Bryophyte species density is low in the coastal dunes and the very young woodlands in the recently reclaimed areas (polders). The species density contour maps of vascular plants and bryophytes in the Netherlands have little in common.  相似文献

Aging and digitalisation are important trends which have their impact on information accessibility. Accessible information about products and services is of crucial importance to ensure that all citizens can participate fully as active members of society. Senior citizens who have difficulties using new media run the risk of exclusion in today's information society. Not all senior citizens, however, encounter problems with new media. Not by a long shot. There is much to be said for 'aged heterogeneity', the concept that individual differences increase as people age. In two explorative qualitative case studies related to accessible health information--an important issue for senior citizens--that were conducted in the Netherlands, variables such as gender, education level and frequency of internet use were therefore included in the research design. In this paper, the most important results of these case studies will be discussed. Attention will be also paid to complementary theories (socialisation, life stages) which could explain differences in information search behaviour when using old or new media.  相似文献

Summary From 1971 to 1979 field trials with increasing rates of fertilizer nitrogen on spring barley with sugar beet as the preceding crop were conducted on a farm on sandy loam in the south western part of The Netherlands. Prior to sowing and fertilizing soil samples were taken and analysed for mineral nitrogen (Nmin). The average yield increase through application of fertilizer nitrogen was only 750 kg of grain per ha per year, the maximum yield being about 5 tonnes per ha. In the case of a fixed rate of fertilizer nitrogen per annum it can be derived from the response curves that 60 kg of N would have given the smallest average yield deficit (170 kg grain per ha) in comparison with maximum yields. With an N-advisory system based on soil analysis the average yield deficit would be at a minimum (163 kg of grain per ha) with a value for mineral soil nitrogen+fertilizer nitrogen totalling 120 kg N per ha.No relationship was found between optimum rate of fertilizer nitrogen and the amount of mineral soil nitrogen at the end of the winter. This was ascribed to the relatively small variation in mineral soil nitrogen and the weak response of the crop to fertilizer nitrogen.Promising results from nitrogen fertilizing systems based on soil analysis can be expected from more responsive crops like winter wheat, sugar beets and potatoes.With the average yield deficit compared with maximum yield as a characteristic, the usefulness of any N-advisory system can be compared, taking a fixed rate of nitrogen system as a standard.Seconded by the Agricultural Bureau of the Netherlands Fertilizer Industry (LBNM).  相似文献

Background

In the recent past, the introduction of Classical Swine Fever Virus (CSFV) followed by between-herd spread has given rise to a number of large epidemics in The Netherlands and Belgium. Both these countries are pork-exporting countries. Particularly important in these epidemics has been the occurrence of substantial "neighborhood transmission" from herd to herd in the presence of base-line control measures prescribed by EU legislation. Here we propose a calculation procedure to map out "high-risk areas" for local between-herd spread of CSFV as a tool to support decision making on prevention and control of CSFV outbreaks. In this procedure the identification of such areas is based on an estimated inter-herd distance dependent probability of neighborhood transmission or "local transmission". Using this distance-dependent probability, we derive a threshold value for the local density of herds. In areas with local herd density above threshold, local transmission alone can already lead to epidemic spread, whereas in below-threshold areas this is not the case. The first type of area is termed 'high-risk' for spread of CSFV, while the latter type is termed 'low-risk'.

Results

As we show for the case of The Netherlands, once the distance-dependent probability of local transmission has been estimated from CSFV outbreak data, it is possible to produce a map of the country in which areas of high-risk herds and of low-risk herds are identified. We made these maps even more informative by estimating border zones between the two types of areas. In these border zones the risk of local transmission of infection to a nearby high-risk area exceeds a certain level.

Conclusion

The risk maps provide an easily understandable visualization of the spatial heterogeneities in transmission risk. They serve as a tool for area-specific designs of control strategies, and possibly also for spatial planning of areas where livestock farming is allowed. Similar risk maps can in principle be constructed for other highly-transmissible livestock infections that spread via neighborhood transmission.

Inhabitants of the high-level natural radiation areas (>1 mSv year(-1)) of Kerala in southwest India were evaluated for basal damage (spontaneous DNA strand breaks and alkali-labile sites) by the alkaline comet assay and oxidative DNA damage (ENDO III- and hOGG1-sensitive sites) by the enzyme-modified comet assay. Of the 67 adult male subjects studied, 45 were from high-level natural radiation areas and 22 subjects were from a nearby normal-level natural radiation area (≤1 mSv year(-1)). Basal damage due to the age and residential area (normal-level natural radiation area/high-level natural radiation areas) of the donors showed significant interaction (P < 0.001) when all subjects were analyzed using a general linear model (GLM). In subgroup analysis, basal damage increased with age in subjects from the normal-level natural radiation area (P = 0.02), while a significant negative correlation (P = 0.002) was observed in subjects from high-level natural radiation areas. Further, basal damage in elderly subjects from high-level natural radiation areas was significantly (P < 0.001) lower compared to the subjects from the normal-level natural radiation area. Oxidative DNA damage was not influenced by age, smoking habit or residential area in the entire sample. However, in a subgroup analysis, hOGG1-sensitive sites showed a significant increase with age in subjects from high-level natural radiation areas (P = 0.005). ENDO III-sensitive sites increased with natural radiation exposure in subjects from high-level natural radiation areas (P = 0.02), but when stratified according to smoking, a significant increase was observed only in smokers (P = 0.01). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on basal and oxidative DNA damage in healthy adults of this population.
