Abstract Past research has shown that angelfish, Pterophyllum scalare , are capable of discriminating between shoals composed of familiar dominant and subordinate companions, whereas they show no preference for shoals of unfamiliar conspecifics. In this study, the relative importance of familiarity and social status (shoal factors) on the shoaling decision of juvenile angelfish, which also differed in social status (individual factor), was investigated as very little is known about such tradeoffs in fishes. Dominant and subordinate individuals were given the choice to shoal with a group of conspecifics composed of familiar dominants vs. unfamiliar dominants and composed of familiar subordinates vs. unfamiliar subordinates. The findings demonstrate that fish with different social status differed in their shoaling preference. Subordinate test fish showed a preferential association with familiar subordinates over unfamiliar subordinates, but preferred the unfamiliar shoal over the familiar one when both shoals were constituted by dominant individuals. The shoaling behaviour shown by dominant test fish, on the other hand, indicated no significant preference for any of the shoals regardless of their composition. A replicate preference test carried out 2 h 30 min after the first one indicated that the association pattern was relatively consistent. Results suggest that angelfish are able to differentiate between the stimulus shoals and demonstrate that the pervasive influence of familiarity on the shoaling decision may be restrained or overridden by the composition of the familiar shoals and the social status of the test fish.  相似文献

Many aspects of teleost physiology are subject to regulation by social interactions. To evaluate the relationship of social status with growth, eye color pattern and hepatic Insulin-like Growth Factor-I (IGF-I) mRNA expression, 30 Oreochromis niloticus were isolated for 10 days and were used in a social pair study. Results revealed that growth of both dominant (except 1 day after social interaction) and subordinate individuals was suppressed, but growth suppression was greater in the subordinates. The dominant fish completely inhibited the feeding of the subordinate individuals during and 1 day after they were introduced into the aquaria together. After that, a pattern of highly aggressive attacks by dominant fish only partially inhibited feeding by the subordinates. Differential alterations in growth rate between dominants and subordinates were attributed more to behavioral changes (i.e., feeding) as transduced by physiological regulators (i.e., IGF-I level and possibly serotonin and/or neuropeptide Y) but may also be due to changes in metabolism. The fish's relative position in the social hierarchy consistently influenced the levels of IGF-I mRNA in the liver and the eye color pattern. Lower social status depressed hepatic IGF-I levels while dominant status stimulated hepatic IGF-I production, possibly in response to inhibition of somatostatin release in the hypothalamus, leading to greater secretion of pituitary growth hormone (GH). A significant positive association was detected between the IGF-I mRNA expression of the dominant fish and the level of aggression (number of attacks) during the encounter. Social status also influenced the eye color pattern of the fish. During aggressive interactions, most of the fish (22 out of 24) displayed decreased eye darkening. At the later part of the encounter, all subsequent subordinates displayed eye-darkening patterns which acted as a social signal announcing social submission. After the encounter dominant fish had paler eye color pattern than subordinates.  相似文献

Groups of four Atlantic salmon parr were established and the dominant individual identified. Feeding responses were then observed in the remaining (subordinate) fish housed in one of three conditions: in the same compartment as the dominant fish (full exposure), separated from it by a transparent partition (visual exposure) or behind an opaque partition (isolated). Subordinate parr in the full exposure condition responded to and ate fewer food pellets than did the dominant fish. However, subordinate parr in the visual exposure condition and in the isolation condition fed actively, indicating that neither visual intimidation nor long-term stress-induced reduction of appetite were responsible for the reduced food intake of subordinate parr in direct contact with dominants. Dominant parr and subordinates in the visual exposure condition, but not subordinates in the exposed condition, moved further from their feeding station when attacking food items that were contested by a competitor compared with the distance moved for uncontested items. The presence of a competitor therefore forced both dominant and visually exposed subordinates to pay higher costs while foraging.  相似文献

In many hierarchical animal societies, dominant individuals control group membership owing to their power to evict subordinates. In such groups, the presence of subordinates, and therefore group stability, is continually dependent on subordinates being tolerated by dominants. The dominant decision to tolerate or evict is, in turn, dependent on the costs and benefits to dominants of subordinate presence. We investigated the effect of subordinate presence on dominants in the female dominance hierarchy of the dwarf angelfish Centropyge bicolor, using both observations of natural groups and experimental removals of subordinates. We found that the presence of subordinates had no effect on dominant access to resources, as measured by dominant foraging rates and home range areas, nor on dominant fitness, as measured by growth rates and spawning frequencies. Our results suggest that the presence of subordinates has a neutral effect on the current fitness of dominants, so that dominants have no great incentive to evict subordinates. We discuss the possibility that tolerance of subordinates might be further explained by considering future fitness, as dominant females in these haremic protogynous angelfish stand to inherit the male position, whereupon subordinate females change from potential competition to useful mates.  相似文献

It has been hypothesized that in avian social groups subordinate individuals should maintain more energy reserves than dominants, as an insurance against increased perceived risk of starvation. Subordinates might also have elevated baseline corticosterone levels because corticosterone is known to facilitate fattening in birds. Recent experiments showed that moderately elevated corticosterone levels resulting from unpredictable food supply are correlated with enhanced cache retrieval efficiency and more accurate performance on a spatial memory task. Given the correlation between corticosterone and memory, a further prediction is that subordinates might be more efficient at cache retrieval and show more accurate performance on spatial memory tasks. We tested these predictions in dominant-subordinate pairs of mountain chickadees (Poecile gambeli). Each pair was housed in the same cage but caching behavior was tested individually in an adjacent aviary to avoid the confounding effects of small spaces in which birds could unnaturally and directly influence each other's behavior. In sharp contrast to our hypothesis, we found that subordinate chickadees cached less food, showed less efficient cache retrieval, and performed significantly worse on the spatial memory task than dominants. Although the behavioral differences could have resulted from social stress of subordination, and dominant birds reached significantly higher levels of corticosterone during their response to acute stress compared to subordinates, there were no significant differences between dominants and subordinates in baseline levels or in the pattern of adrenocortical stress response. We find no evidence, therefore, to support the hypothesis that subordinate mountain chickadees maintain elevated baseline corticosterone levels whereas lower caching rates and inferior cache retrieval efficiency might contribute to reduced survival of subordinates commonly found in food-caching parids.  相似文献

Theory predicts that fish should show colour-assortative shoaling in order to avoid the oddity effect whereby individuals that differ in some feature from the group majority appear to incur increased risk of predation. It has also been shown that early experience plays an important role in affecting social preferences in some fish species. In this study, the importance of colour phenotype in promoting assortative shoaling and the role played by the recent social environment on its expression were investigated in juvenile angelfish, Pterophyllum scalare. Individuals of the uniformly black and golden colour morphs were housed in a group with conspecifics of like and unlike body colour to themselves, as well as in mixed-colour groups for 4 weeks. Subsequently, they were subjected to a binary choice to shoal with a group of conspecifics composed of unfamiliar fish of either a like or unlike colour phenotype to themselves. The response of the individuals to the colour attributes of the shoals was related to their recent social environment. Fish in like- and mixed-colour previous treatments showed a preferential association with like colour conspecifics. In contrast, the shoaling behaviour exhibited by fish previously maintained with a group of unlike-coloured conspecifics (cross-housed treatment) indicated no significant preference for any of the shoals. The results suggest that angelfish use body colouration as an intraspecific shoaling cue and that learning, in the form of recent familiarisation with a specific colour phenotype of conspecifics, can affect colour-assortative shoaling preferences in this species. This learning component of the choice need not be restricted to early developmental stages.  相似文献

The behaviour of individual angelfish, Pterophyllum scalare , isolated for 4 days in the laboratory has been compared with that of the same fish in groups. Locomotor activity, feeding behaviour, aggression and responses to novel stimuli have been studied. Isolated fish are less active, approach the surface to feed less readily and are slower to recover from sudden mechanical shock than when kept in a group. In contrast, isolates are more attentive to a gradually-applied, novel, visual stimulus. The aggressive behaviour of post-isolates on return to the group tank was not significantly different from that shown before isolation.  相似文献

Subordinates often have to wait for dominants to obtain food. As a result, their foraging success should be less predictable and they should therefore maintain a higher level of energy reserves compared with dominants. A corollary of this prediction is that subordinates should gain mass earlier in the day and maintain higher mass than dominants. We tested these predictions with captive Carolina chickadees. In two different experiments (one where birds were given ad libitum access to food and the other with food access limited to 60 min/day), we formed social flocks of two previously unfamiliar birds and compared their energy management (body fat and food caches) while they were in the flock with energy management when housed alone. Results from both experiments failed to support the predictions. Of all the parameters of body mass and food caching we measured only the following results were significant: (1) On the ad libitum food schedule, both subordinates and dominants accumulated more mass over the day when in a flock compared with when they were solitary, and there were no differences in mass gain between dominants and subordinates. (2) When analysed separately, dominants showed a higher evening mass in the flock compared with the solitary condition, a trend that runs opposite to the prediction. Our results suggest that when in favourable foraging conditions, social interactions might cause dominant and subordinate birds to accumulate more energy reserves as a result of competition. On the other hand, if food supply is limited, both dominants and subordinates may be forced to maintain similar fat reserves as an insurance against increased risk of starvation. Scent marking by deposition of urine, and the preputial glands, of adult, male, wild house mice, Mus mmmlus L., were studied and compared with those of an outbred domestic strain. The preputial glands of dominant wild mice were always heavier than those of subordinates. No dominance relationships could be established among the domestic mice. For study of scent marking each mouse was observed singly in a residential maze. Dominant wild mice marked more than the subordinates. The domestic mice scent-marked much less even than the subordinate wild mice. Subordinate wild mice spent less time than the dominant wild mice outside the nest; but the number of excursions outside the nest made by the subordinates resembled that of the dominants. Hence social status influenced the pattern of movements in a structured environment.  相似文献

Stressful housing conditions like social isolation have been shown to profoundly affect the physiology and health of various organisms which is rarely addressed in fish species. In the present study, we used a shoaling species, zebrafish, to investigate the stress reactivity of grouped and individually housed fish. We also hypothesized if isolation is a stressful condition may disrupt growth performance and innate immune response of individuals. To this end, fish were housed individually (social isolated treatment) or in groups of five fish (control treatment) for 60 days. Growth indices of fish were not affected by social isolation. Sixty-day social isolation did insignificant effect on baseline cortisol levels of specimens; however, individually housed zebrafish showed lower plasma cortisol to chasing stress than the control grouped fish. On the contrary, exposure to predator caused higher cortisol levels in social isolated fish. Serum lysozyme activity of isolated individuals was significantly lower than control fish, but activity of serum complement remained unchanged. Our results represent evidences that zebrafish experienced social isolation showed broad changes in physiological and immunological functions which may affect the quality of life.  相似文献

Individual differences in aggressive behaviour, feeding and activity were at least partly responsible for the growth depensation of the juvenile flounder. The dominants could not effectively defend the food in excess and disproportional food acquisition of the subordinates and dominants was not the primary mechanism responsible for the size hierarchy effect. In culture, size grading of the early juvenile flounder could markedly improve the growth and survival and thus possibly increase the overall biomass production of the flounder.  相似文献

We investigated the influence of social interactions on individual foraging behavior and community structure of frugivorous birds in southern Costa Rica. Detailed observations of large, heterospecific feeding assemblages at fruiting trees revealed the existence of an interspecific dominance hierarchy, largely consistent with body and bill size. Social status influenced access to food in several ways. First, subordinate species were interrupted more and tended to have shorter foraging bouts than dominant species (n > 1.000 abouts). Second, analysis of over 7,000 videotaped head movements showed that subordinate species spent a smaller fraction of their foraging bouts actually feeding (as opposed to looking about) than did dominants. Third, when many birds were in a tree simultaneously, the foraging bouts of subordinate species were shortened; this effect was less pronounced or absent for species higher in the dominance hierarchy. Fourth, subordinate species foraged less frequently in mixed-species assemblages than did dominant species. Finally, subordinate species fed disproportionately more in the late afternoon at fruiting trees. The influence of social status appeared to manifest itself at the community level. The species composition of foraging assemblages was compared at isolated fruiting trees situated in an agricultural landscape near to (< 0.5 km) and far from (> 6 km) a large tract of primary forest. Whereas the full complement of avian frugivores foraged at the near trees, visitors to the far trees were predominantly of high social status. We discuss reasons why high social status and associated traits might confer an advantage in exploiting human-dominated habitat.  相似文献

The following study set out to test the hypothesis that acute treatment with the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, fluoxetine, would result in a rise in circulating 5-HT levels and consequently a decrease in territorial aggression in the Gulf toadfish, Opsanus beta. Size-matched pairs of toadfish were implanted intraperitoneally with the same dose of fluoxetine (0, 10 or 25 μg g− 1). After a social interaction between a pair of fish, circulating levels of serotonin (5-HT; 5-hydroxytryptamine) and cortisol were measured and relative mRNA expression of the 5-HT1A receptor in the toadfish brain was determined using quantitative (real-time) PCR (qPCR). Behavioral endpoints such as the number of aggressive acts and swimming activity were also quantified so that dominant and subordinate fish could be identified. Fluoxetine treatment resulted in an increase in circulating levels of 5-HT, regardless of social status. Circulating cortisol concentrations were unaffected by fluoxetine, but were significantly higher in subordinate individuals when compared to dominant fish. Toadfish brain 5-HT1A receptor mRNA expression was not affected by treatment or social status. Lastly and contrary to our predictions, fluoxetine treatment resulted in an increase in the number of aggressive acts made by dominant individuals, with no differences in the level of aggression or swimming activity of subordinate fish. This study is the first to describe elevated aggression in a teleost fish with elevated circulating levels of 5-HT.  相似文献

Some common practices in aquaculture, ornamental trade and fish facilities may disturb the behavioural repertoire of fish and its natural adaptive value, reducing welfare and impairing fish production. Hence, it is necessary to understand fish behaviour, as well as the factors affecting it, to improve the quality of fish's life under artificial environment. Here, we reviewed the behaviour of the angelfish Pterophyllum scalare, an Amazonian cichlid used worldwide both as an ornamental fish and as a fish model in scientific research. We characterized social, reproductive and feeding behaviour, as well as the amazing cognitive ability of the angelfish. In addition, we reviewed the effects of environmental enrichment and suggested some important variables that need to be considered for rearing P. scalare. In this review, we show for the first time a synthesis on behaviour and a best practice overview to improve the welfare of angelfish as a target species. Nonetheless, most topics reviewed fit a broader set of fish species, particularly ornamental ones. This synthesis can therefore open a path for further behavioural research applied to the welfare of angelfish and bring insights to other fish species.  相似文献

To assess the effects of subordinate social status on digestive function, metabolism, and enzyme activity in salmonid fish, juvenile rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss were paired with size-matched conspecifics (<1.5% difference in fork length) for 5 d. Fish that were fasted for 5 d and fish sampled directly from the holding tank were used as control groups. Both subordinate and fasted fish experienced significant decreases in intestine mass (P = 0.043), and the gall bladder showed marked and significant changes in both size (P = 0.004) and appearance. These findings suggest that the negative effect of social subordination on digestive function reflects in large part a lack of feeding. Hepatic phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase activity was significantly higher in subordinate fish relative to dominants, whereas subordinate hepatic pyruvate kinase activity was significantly lower; activities of both enzymes were significantly correlated with plasma cortisol concentrations and behavior scores. Dominant-subordinate differences in the activities of these enzymes were eliminated by administration of the glucocorticoid receptor antagonist RU486, underlining a role for circulating cortisol in eliciting the differences. Significant increases relative to control fish were also detected in red and white muscles from subordinate fish in the activities of protein catabolic enzymes (aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, glutamate dehydrogenase). These differences occurred in the absence of any change in plasma free amino acid or ammonia concentrations, supporting an enhanced turnover of amino acids in muscle in subordinate fish. The results support the hypothesis that changes in metabolism, beyond those elicited by low food consumption, may be responsible at least in part for the low growth rates typical of subordinate fish and that these changes may be related specifically to circulating cortisol levels in subordinate fish.  相似文献

Two studies were conducted to determine the importance of the postweaning environment and social milieu in regulating the expression of intraspecific aggression in Norway rats. In Experiment 1, male rats were housed either individually or in pairs at 21 days of age. In addition, one-half of the singly housed and paired animals were given experiences with intruders during maturation. At 85 days of age, all animals were given a brief intruder test and then removed from their postweaning environment and provided individually with homecages for a two week period until tested for aggression toward intruders. Results of intruder tests given during maturation indicated agonistic exchanges appeared earlier and more frequently in cages housing a single resident than cages with cohabiting males. However, agonistic exchanges between singly reared residents and intruders had detrimental consequences in adulthood especially under long-term combat situations. That is, although individually reared animals, with early fighting experiences, were capable of initiating intraspecific aggression, such individuals were unable to defend their homecage over a long period of time as evidenced by the high number of wounds and tendency to lose body weight during adult fighting.In Experiment 2, male Norway rats were reared in pairs from 21 days of age and identified as dominant or subordinate on the basis of intracolony social interactions shown during maturation. At 80 days of age, animals were paired with individually reared males in an unfamiliar cage for a 20 day period and examined for agonistic behavior toward intruders at 100 days of age. Group-reared subordinate males exhibited defensive behavior during confrontations with individually reared animals and incurred more wounds and lost more body weight than their cohabiting partner. In addition, subordinate males showed significantly fewer offensive postures toward intruders than individually reared cohabitants. In contrast, group-reared dominant animals did not differ from individually reared males in display of agonistic patterns, in number of wounds, and body weight changes during the period of cohabitation. These findings demonstrate that early rearing factors have pronounced effects on agonistic behavior. Animals experiencing defeat during development are more likely to lose agonistic confrontations in unfamiliar territory than either animals dominant in their early social interactions or animals without the experience of winning or losing agonistic encounters. These results have implications for the understanding of agonistic behavior and predicting outcomes of animal contests, and reveal important differences in agonistic experiences among animals reared in groups.  相似文献

Certain types of inanimate environmental enrichment have been shown to positively affect the behavior of laboratory primates, as has housing them in appropriate social conditions. While social housing is generally advocated as an important environmental enhancement, few studies have attempted to measure the influence of social conditions on the effects of inanimate enrichment or to compare the relative merits of social and inanimate enhancements. In the present study, inanimate enrichment (predominately physical and feeding enhancements) resulted in increased species-typical behavior for socially restricted subjects. However, social enrichment (living in groups) appeared to be more beneficial for young rhesus monkeys, leading to increased species-typical activities and decreased abnormal activities. The behavior of one cohort of yearling rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) housed in small peer groups was compared with the behavior of four yearling cohorts housed in single cages. Half the animals in each cohort received a three-phase enrichment program and the rest served as controls. Group-housed yearlings spent significantly more time feeding and exploring and significantly less time behaving abnormally, self-grooming, and drinking than did singly housed yearlings. Enriched subjects spent significantly more time playing by themselves, and significantly less time self-grooming and exploring than did controls. Among group-housed subjects only, there were no differences between enriched and control monkeys. Captive primates should be housed socially, whenever appropriate, as the first and most important step in an enrichment program, with the provision of inanimate enhancements being considerably less important. Limited resources for inanimate enrichment programs instead should be focused on those individuals who can not be housed socially. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Primiparous female hamsters were mated to proven breeders and stressed during early pregnancy. Females were housed singly throughout gestation except for Days 4, 5 and 6 when they were paired for 10-min intervals 3 times each day with another female matched for age, weight and day of pregnancy. Within each of the pairs, one female was consistently dominant to the other. Controls were exposed to a novel area instead of a conspecific. At parturition, all pups were counted, sexed and weighed. There were no significant differences between litter sizes or sex ratios (defined as % male) of control and dominant females. Litter sizes produced by control or dominant dams were significantly larger than those of subordinate dams, and litter sex ratios of dominants were significantly higher than those of subordinates. Subordinate dams produced fewer males than did dominant dams, but there was no difference in the number of females produced. Also, subordinate dams produced smaller pups than control dams. Examination of uterine implantation sites and fetal resorptions indicated that fetal loss occurred between Days 5 and 10 of pregnancy. These results suggest that subordinate dams produce smaller litters via selective resorption or spontaneous abortion of males in utero and that those males they do produce are smaller than those produced by dominant or control dams. We suggest that males are more susceptible in utero to effects of maternal stress in this species, and may require more maternal investment to survive to term.  相似文献

Swiss male mice were individually-housed or maintained in groups of 8 from weaning until 80 days of age. At this time, the grouped mice were allocated to new groups of 5–6 previously unfamiliar individuals. Identified dominants were then caged with two clearly submissive males for 1 week. At this time hypothalamic samples were taken from the dominant and one subordinate and from a number of long-term individually-housed males. A radio- immunoassay for LHRF was carried out. The levels of this hypothalamic releasing factor were significantly higher in both dominant and subordinate grouped mice than in ‘isolates’. Mice of differing social status showed comparable titres of this hormone. The results suggest that social conflict and/or disturbance augments this factor in mice irrespective of the social status achieved by individual animals.  相似文献
