Presence of Malformin-Like Substances in Malformed Floral Tissues of Mango   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Malformin-A like substances were detected in malformed floral tissues of mango at four stages of development, viz., fully swollen buds, bud inception, fully grown panicles prior to full bloom and in panicles at full bloom. Spraying with 2000 ppm ascorbic acid, prior to flower bud differentiation significantly reduced the incidence of malformation and resulted in increased fruit yield.  相似文献

Infection of mango panicles and young leaf shoots by Fusarium results in significantly lower fruit yields. Some mango cultivars are known to be tolerant to blossom malformation, while others are highly susceptible. Previous researchers linked the ability of certain cultivars to confine Fusarium infection to the production of high levels of mangiferin. This study further elucidates the role of phenolic metabolites contributing to tolerance. Phenolic profiles of mature leaf extracts from cultivars with varying degrees of resistance to Fusarium infection were obtained by ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography–time-of-flight-mass detection. Chemometric models constructed from the data revealed a clear distinction between the profiles of tolerant and susceptible cultivars and permitted the identification of biomarkers associated with susceptibility to infection. The presence of elevated levels of mangiferin, maclurin and maclurin O-galloyl-glucoside in the leaves were associated with a higher degree of tolerance. In contrast, high levels of iriflophenone glucosides were linked to increased susceptibility of the cultivars to infection. These models can serve as an important tool to investigate appropriate cultivars, prior to their introduction to areas prone to the disease.  相似文献

The spatial distribution of larval and adult thrips (Thysanoptera) was studied on mango panicles, Mangifera indica L., on Penang Island, Malaysia, during two consecutive mango flowering seasons from December 2008 to March 2009 and from August to September 2009. Larval and adult thrips were sampled from mango panicles using the carbon dioxide (CO2) collection technique weekly in treated and untreated orchards. Seasonal abundance and dispersion pattern of thrips were investigated on weed host plants in the treated orchard between June 2008 and March 2009. Spatiotemporal dynamics of larvae and adults was analyzed using Taylor’s Power Law (TPL), Lloyd’s Index (LI), and Green’s Index (GI). Thrips hawaiiensis (Morgan) was the dominant thrips species recovered from mango panicles and weeds in the treated orchard, whereas Scirtothrips dorsalis (Hood) was the most abundant species captured in the untreated orchard. Thrips adults and larvae analyzed via dispersion indices were found to be aggregated in mango panicles in both orchards. The value of the aggregation index (b) of TPL for the total number of adult thrips was significantly higher in the treated orchard than in the untreated orchard, whereas slopes of TPL for the total number of larval thrips did not differ significantly between treated and untreated orchards. All adult thrips species were distributed regularly on the weed plants; however, their larvae were aggregated. It is concluded that pesticide treatment caused adult thrips to become more aggregated on mango panicles, hiding in flower parts that were less exposed to the chemicals.  相似文献

腰果角盲蝽(Helopeltis sp.)为我国腰果树的新害虫,在海南岛严重为害腰果树嫩梢、花枝、嫩叶、幼坚果及果梨.据1982年调查,坚果被害率最高可达100%,其中被害至干枯的达7%.腰果角盲蝽广布于海南岛,除为害腰果树外还为害可可、胡椒、芒果、番石榴、茶树等多种经济作物.此虫年发生12代,一代需16—80天.建议对腰果植株进行合理修枝、及时除去带卵枝条及在梢期、花期和座果期各喷药一次对其进行防治.  相似文献

The effect of exogenously supplied NAA and BA on the shoot and root formation in isolated petiole segments of Begonia×cheimantha was determined in vitro on a modified White medium at a constant temperature of 24°C. The best development of normally appearing plants was obtained on media containing 0.01 mg × 1?1 of NAA and 0.5 to 1.0 mg × 1?1 of BA. Lower concentrations of BA yielded no shoots, higher concentrations promoted shoot formation, but the shoots were abnormal with malformed leaves. Lower concentrations of NAA resulted in poorer survival rate and no roots, with higher concentrations of NAA many roots developed, but these were thickened and their longitudinal growth inhibited. Temperature proved to be of utmost importance for the induction of shoot formation. Thus significantly fewer shoots were formed at the higher temperature (25°C) than at lower temperatures (15 to 20°C). Temperature immediately after initial transfer was of greatest importance: 25°C, during the first week followed by low temperature, produced very few shoots.  相似文献

利用酶联免疫测定技术研究了水稻细胞质雄性不育系珍汕97A及其保持系珍汕97B在幼穗发育过程中叶片、幼穗和花药中内源IAA、GA1+4、ABA和iPAs含量的动态变化。结果表明,1)从幼穗发育的雌雄蕊形成期到三核花粉期,保持系叶片中IAA水平高于不育系,并在二核花粉期最高;在幼穗和花药中也以保持系为高。2)保持系与不育系叶片中GA1+4含量变化趋势相似,均为先升后降,但从单核到三核花粉期以保持系为高;在幼穗和花药中也都以保持系为高。3)不育系叶片中ABA水平在幼穗发育早期明显高于保持系,中期与保持系相近,后期又高于保持系;在幼穗和花药中也都以不育系为高。4)保持系叶片、幼穗和花药中iPAs含量始终显著高于不育系。5)保持系叶片中IAA+GA1+4+iPAs与ABA之比值也始终高于不育系。提示不育系叶片、幼穗和花药中IAA、GA1+4、iPAs和ABA含量出现了异常,且IAA、GA1+4和iPAs亏缺以及ABA盈积可能与水稻细胞质雄性不育发生有关。  相似文献

Mango (Mangifera indica L.) suffers from floral and vegetative malformation and crop production is seriously affected. The anti-fungal activity of ethanolic extract of malformed mango inflorescence was observed at different concentrations (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000 and 5000 μl/ml) against 10 fungi, viz., Ustilago cynodontis, Cercospora cajani, Sphaerotheca sp., Cercospora sp., Alternaria solani, Bipolaris sp., Helminthosporium sp., Curvularia sp., Fusarium udum and Alternaria cajani. Spore germination of most of the fungi was inhibited at 5000 μg/ml. Some of them were also susceptible at 3000 or 4000 μg/ml concentration. Analysis of phenolic acids by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) showed 18 peaks in the extract, but only four could be identified, viz., capachin, gallic, benzoic and cinnamic acids. Because of the high efficacy of ethanolic extract of malformed mango inflorescence, its use under field conditions to control some plant diseases has been suggested.  相似文献

The birth rate and mortality rate of infants with congenital malformations of the limbs were examined in the Awajishima free-ranging group of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata). Of the 606 infants born between 1978 and 1995, 86 (14.2%) were malformed. The male-female ratio did not differ between malformed and normal infants. Most kin-groups included females who gave birth to malformed infants at least once. The mortality rate within the first year after birth for malformed infants (28.2%) was significantly higher than that for normal infants (10.0%). However, this indicates that more than 70% of malformed infants were able to survive for the first year of life, even though they were unable to cling to their mothers ventrum due to their limb deformities. This finding indicates that maternal care-taking is sufficient to enable malformed infants to survive during the early stages of development and that clinging by the infant is not necessary for the display of maternal care. Mango malformation is the most threaten disease that limits mango production, worldwide. For a long time, due to its complex nature, the cause and causal agents were strongly disputed. Diverse Fusaria, including Fusarium mangiferae, are known to be associated with the disease. There are indications that augmented level of endogenous ethylene in response to various abiotic and biotic stresses alters the morphology of reproductive organs. Here, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of healthy and malformed reproductive organs of mango cv. Baramasi was performed to compare the functional morphology. The SEM study revealed that anthers of hermaphrodite healthy flowers were bilobed with large number of turgid pollen grains whereas malformed flowers showed fused lobed anthers with scanty deformed pollen grains. Furthermore, the stigma of healthy flowers exhibited a broad landing pad as compared to malformed stigma which showed hooked and pointed tip. All these impaired morphology of male and female reproductive organs lead to failure of sexual reproduction. This is the first evidence to show fused lobed anther with impaired pollen grains and hooked stigma with poor stigmatic receptivity are mainly responsible for restricting the pollen germination and pollen tube growth. Here we suggest that abnormal development of anthers and pistils is due to endogenously produced stress ethylene. Further, added load of cyanide, a byproduct of ethylene biosynthesis, may also contribute to the development of necrosis which lead to desiccation of anther and pistil during hypersensitive response of plants.  相似文献

Effects of salinity and cutting on the development of Phragmites australis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The effects of increased salinity and cutting the above ground biomass on the growth of Phragmites australis were evaluated by investigating four experimental reed stands grown in outdoor tanks. Two stands were treated with 30 salinity and the other two stands with freshwater; one stand of each treatment was cut to 20 cm during the second growing season. Growth conditions were observed until all the plants were dead at the end of the second year. The number of shoots emerged from the freshwater-treated stand was about 70% higher than that of the saltwater-treated stand. The number of shoots emerged from cut plant stands were markedly lower than uncut stands. The average shoot height was negatively affected by salinity and shoots that emerged after cutting further decreased in height. The average number of leaves on a shoot was not significantly affected by salinity, but reduced by cutting in both treatments. Leaf length, width and the distance between leaves were decreased by both salinity and cutting. In the freshwater-treated uncut stand more than 50% of the shoots formed panicles, but this proportion was reduced to 6% by salinity, to 15% by cutting, and to 0% by the combination of salinity and cutting. This study showed again that salinity reduces the growth of aboveground components. The growth, however, was most severely retarded by cutting combined with salinity, which has many implications for better management of P. australis stands.  相似文献

As potassium (K) requirement of grapevine (Vitis viniferaL.) berries is high and phloem translocation from mature leaves to developing organs is well established, it was posited that shoot trimming, a widely applied technique which alters the source-sink balance and the mature-to-immature foliage ratio of a canopy, may influence K deficiency. Six-year-old Cabernet Sauvignon grapevines were grown in 0.045 m3 pots (one plant per pot) filled with a soil sampled from a vineyard previously displaying K deficiency symptoms. Two levels of K supply (K0, no K added; K1, 25 g K per pot added in five splits from bloom to post veraison) were tested on vines that for each level were left (a) untrimmed and trimmed at ten main leaves with (b) or without (c) maintenance of lateral shoots in a split-plot design. Potassium concentration of leaf blades, berries and canes, vegetative growth and leaf gas exchange were recorded throughout the season; yield, grape quality and must characteristics were determined at fruit maturity. While adding potassium to the soil resulted in higher K concentration in blades of both main and lateral shoots and berries at harvest, trimming with removal of lateral shoots resulted in lower blade K concentration of the main leaves at harvest and more severe K deficiency symptoms regardless of K soil availability. Berry K concentration and the fraction of whole-plant K partitioned to clusters were not significantly affected by trimming. Gas-exchange, vegetative growth, yield and grape quality were not affected by the seasonal K fertilization, whereas the latter was impaired when trimming with excision of lateral shoots was applied. The results indicate that if shoot trimming is not followed by an adequate regrowth of secondary shoots an excessive depletion of potassium from the retained old basal leaves occurs during fruit maturity and increases the risk of leaf K deficiency, particularly in the K0 treatment.  相似文献

Malformation of mango (Mangifera indica L.) induced by Fusarium moniliforme var. subglutinans is a plant disease of international importance. The paper reports the downstream defence responses at the initial stage in a susceptible host (cultivar Amrapali) after treatment with biotic (isolated from the pathogen cell wall) (BEL) and abiotic (salicylic acid, SA) elicitors, and inoculation of vegetative buds with the pathogen (IVB). The SA was further tested to induce resistance in field trials. The inoculation and application of elicitors increased β-1, 3 glucanase that causes lysis of fungal hyphae by many folds. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) (active oxygen species) that induces hypersensitive cell death was reduced to the minimum level after treatment with BEL. The reduction of H2O2 in the inoculated vegetative buds was also substantial; however, comparatively less with SA treatment. Consequently, there was no hypersensitive cell death in the malformed mango. Salicylic acid that enhances H2O2 content by suppressing H2O2-degradation by catalase, increased marginally with the SA treatment and in the IVB, but reduced with the BEL. The reduction of SA in BEL-treated buds concomitantly reduced its H2O2 content. The activity of catalase, suppressor of resistance mechanism, was reduced in all the treatments, but the reduction was not enough to arrest H2O2-degradation. Magiferin (1, 3, 6, 7-tetrahdroxyxanthone C2-β-D glucoside), a defence metabolite of mango, increased substantially in all the treatments; maximum with the BEL. A pathogenesis-related (PR) protein of 20 KDa that resists symptom development appeared in all the treatments except the control. But light colour of the spots for the PR-protein indicated low protein accumulation. The maximum accumulation was with the IVB followed by SA and BEL treatments. The amount of total protein reduced considerably in all the treatments. The SA treatment on healthy plants failed to induce defence against malformation. Contrarily, the treatment on malformed seedlings restored normal growth within two months. Hence, SA acted better over the infected plants in presence of the pathogen. Thus, a signal transduction system involving SA and H2O2 remained nonfunctional and enough defence chemicals could not be synthesised. Defence genes that produce phenolic and β-1, 3 glucanase, however, became activated and saved the plants from death although could not prevent symptom manifestations.  相似文献

Healthy black-currant bushes (var. Wellington XXX) and others infected systemically with a virulent strain of reversion virus were exposed equally to infestation by the gall-mite vector (Phytoptus ribis Nal.). Shoots with malformed leaves caused by mites feeding at the stem apices were virtually restricted to the virus-infected bushes. Buds infested with mites became rounded galls, which were far fewer and more localized on shoots of healthy bushes than on infected ones. Similar results were obtained in further experiments with Wellington XXX and seven other varieties. Bushes infected systemically with an avirulent strain of reversion virus developed more galls than healthy bushes, but fewer galls than bushes infected with a virulent strain. The young buds of virus-infected bushes were 170 times more susceptible to dispersing mites than those of healthy bushes. The axillary buds of healthy bushes resisted infestation and the apical meristems were virtually inaccessible to mites, whereas the axillary and apical buds of virus-infected bushes were invaded readily. An experiment with bushes var. Cotswold Cross that were either healthy or partially or completely infected with reversion virus was retained for two years. Each year there was a relationship between symptom expression and mite infestation; only shoots with chronic virus symptoms developed mite-affected leaves and numerous galls. Virus infection increased the vulnerability and accessibility of the apical and axillary buds by decreasing the density of hairs on the stems and leaves. Infected bushes also presented a greater catchment area to dispersing mites and more shoots and buds were available for colonization than on healthy bushes. The interactions between virus, host and vector are discussed, together with their implications in nature, in experimental design and in disease control.  相似文献

Plants of Agropyron spicatum (Pursh) Scribn. and Smith. from populations native to serpentine and nonserpentine soils were grown at varying levels of magnesium and calcium in culture solutions. The yields of plants from the two populations were different. At high Mg levels (low Ca) the yield of the serpentine population was significantly higher than that of the nonserpentine population. At low Mg the yield of the serpentine population leveled off at a Mg: Ca ratio of 1:2, while the yield of the nonserpentine population increased up to a Mg:Ca ratio of 1:8 and showed no leveling off. Chemical analyses of tissue showed that the Ca uptake of plants from the serpentine population was significantly higher than that of the nonserpentine population. In addition, the serpentine population maintained a lower Mg concentration in the shoots than the nonserpentine population at comparable Mg substrate levels. The two populations showed differences in Ca and Mg uptake efficiency and Mg/Ca, Ca + Mg/K + Na, and Ca + Mg + K + Na in the shoots. The ecotypic differentiation with respect to Mg and Ca between native populations of serpentine and nonserpentine A. spicatum does not appear to be due to any single mechanism but, rather, a combination of several possible mechanisms, i.e., differences in root morphology, uptake mechanisms, translocation of nutrients, and interactions between cations.  相似文献

In trees, reproduction constitutes an important resource investment which may compete with growth for resources. However, detailed analyses on how growth and fruit production interact at the shoot level are scarce. Primary canopy growth depends on the development of current-year shoots and their secondary growth might also influence the number and size of fruits supported by them. We hypothesise that an enhanced thickening of current-year shoots is linked positively to acorn production in oaks. We analysed the effect of acorn production on shoot growth of two co-occurring Mediterranean oak species with contrasting leaf habit (Quercus ilex, Quercus faginea). Length and cross-sectional area of current-year shoots, apical bud mass, number of leaves and acorns, xylem and conductive area, number of vessels of acorn-bearing and non-bearing shoots were measured in summer and autumn. Nitrogen and carbohydrates analyses were also performed in stems and leaves of both shoot types. Stem cross-sectional area increased in acorn-bearing shoots when compared with non-bearing shoots for both species and such surplus secondary growth was observed since summer. In bearing shoots, the total transversal area occupied by vessels decreased significantly from basal to apical positions along the stem as did the xylem area and the number of vessels. Leaves of bearing shoots showed lower nitrogen concentration than those of non-bearing shoots. Carbohydrate concentrations did not differ in stems and leaves as a function of the presence of acorns. Such results suggest that carbohydrates may preferentially be allocated towards reproductive shoots, possibly through enhanced secondary growth, satisfying all their carbon demands for growth and reproduction. Our findings indicate that acorn production in the two studied oaks depends on shoot secondary growth.  相似文献

Eggplants (Solanum melongena L. cv. Bonica) were grown in a glasshouse during summer under natural light with one unbranched shoot or one shoot with 3 to 4 branches and with or without fruit in quartz sand buffered and not buffered with 0.5% CaCO3 (w : v), respectively. Nutrient solutions supplied contained nitrate or ammonium as the sole nitrogen source. Compared with nutrient solutions containing nitrate (10 mM), solutions containing ammonium (10 mM) caused a decrease in net photosynthesis of eggplants during early stages of vegetative growth when grown in quartz sand not buffered with CaCO3. The decrease was not observed before leaves showed interveinal chlorosis. In contrast, net photosynthesis after bloom at first increased more rapidly in eggplants supplied with ammonium than with nitrate nitrogen. However, even in this case, net photosynthesis decreased four weeks later when ammonium nutrition was continued. The decrease was accompanied by epinasty and interveinal chlorosis on the lower leaves and later by severe wilting, leaf drop, stem lesions, and hampered growth of stems, roots, and fruits. These symptoms appeared later on plants not bearing fruits than on plants bearing fruits. If nutrient solutions containing increasing concentrations of ammonium (0.5–30 mM) were supplied after the time of first fruit ripening, shoot growth and set of later flowers and fruits were promoted. In contrast, vegetative growth and reproduction was only slightly affected by increasing the concentration of nitrate in the nutrient solutions. In quartz sand buffered with CaCO3 ammonium nutrition caused deleterious effects only under low light conditions (shade) and on young plants during rapid fruit growth. If eggplants were supplied with ammonium nitrogen before bloom, vegetative growth was promoted, and set of flowers and fruit occurred earlier than on plants supplied with nitrate. Furthermore, the number of flowers and fruit yield increased. These effects of ammonium nutrition were more pronounced when plants were grown with branched shoots than with unbranched shoots. The results indicate that vegetative and reproductive growth of eggplants may be manipulated without causing injury to the plants by supplying ammonium nitrogen as long as the age of the plants, carbohydrate reserves of the roots, quantity of ammonium nitrogen supplied, and pH of the growth medium are favourable. Steady state levels of in vivo nitrate reductase activity in the endosperm, scutella, roots and shoots of maize seedlings were higher in normal maize than those in high lysine maize. Activity of peroxidase in the roots, however, was higher in the high lysine cultivar. The nitrate reductase activity increased with the supply of nitrate in all parts of the seedlings of both cultivars, although the rates of increment in the endosperm were lower than those in scutella, roots and shoots. In relation to substrate concentration, a saturation was achieved at 5 to 10 mM of nitrate except in the endosperm, where activity increased slowly up to 100 mM at least. Final levels of enzyme activity were significantly higher in the scutella of normal than in that of high lysine seedlings. In vitro enzyme activity in the roots also increased with the supply of nitrate in both cultivars, reaching maximum at 5 to 10 mM nitrate.  相似文献

  • Most aluminium (Al)‐accumulating species are found on soils with high Al saturation and low Ca availability (Ca poor). Callisthene fasciculata Mart. (Vochysiaceae), however, is an Al‐accumulating tree restricted to Ca‐rich soils with low Al saturation in the Brazilian Cerrado savanna. Here we tested its calcicole behaviour, and the possible role of organic acids in detoxification of Al during the early stages of plant development.
  • We assessed growth, dry mass, nutrients, Al and organic acids in seedlings grown for 50 days on two contrasting Cerrado soils; one with high Ca concentrations and low Al saturation and the other with low Ca availability and high Al saturation.
  • Relative to plants on Ca‐rich soil, plants on Ca‐poor soil had necrotic spots and bronzing of leaves. Roots and shoots contained reduced concentrations of P and Cu, but higher concentrations of Fe, Al and citrate. Despite lower concentrations in the soil, Ca and Mg increased in shoots. Shoot concentrations of oxalate were also higher.
  • We confirmed C. fasciculata as an Al‐accumulating species with calcicole behaviour. The increased concentrations of organic acids in plants with higher Al accumulation suggest that high availability of soluble Al does not prevent occurrence of this species on soils with high Al saturation. Instead, the absence of C. fasciculata from Ca‐poor soils is probably due to imbalances in tissue Fe, Cu and Zn imposed by this soil type.

Kidney-bean plants ( Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Contender) were dusted with sulphur 25 days after germination. The amount of ethylene evolution was measured in shoots (with attached leaves) and roots from plants in several stages of development. The growth of shoots and roots was also measured, and the flowering time observed. The ethylene evolution was associated with precise morphogenic stages. The amounts of ethylene produced from sulphur treated plants, compared with that evolved from control plants, showed two stages of stimulation in shoots, one preceding full bloom and one preceding fruit-set. Inhibition of ethylene evolution due to sulphur dust occurred in roots before initiation of floral primordia and before full bloom. The treatment with sulphur dust seemed to increase the number of leaves per plant, but only in the vegetative stage. Likewise, the earliness of flowering was enhanced. The effects of elemental sulphur dust treatments on ethylene evolution may be attributed to a slow oxidation of elemental sulphur in air producing SO2; this SO2 greatly enhances ethylene evolution from leaf tissues.  相似文献

Energy (ATP and ADP) levels in stem apices of depodded pea plants (Pisum sativum L. cv. Little Marvel) were significantly higher than those of podded plants during the pod-filling stage before whole plant senescence. This difference in energy content appeared before decreases in leaf chlorophyll and soluble proteins occurred in plants of both treatments. In contrast, the mineral nutrient levels (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Mn) in stem apices of plants from both treatments were similar. Energy levels in reproductive leaves from podded and depodded plants were similar. The mineral nutrients in leaves with fruits in their axils and similar leaves of depodded plants were comparable except for nitrogen. Plant growth measurements—dry weight, leaf area, leaf dry weight, root/shoot ratio—were significantly higher in depodded than podded plants. Whole plant senescence occurred significantly earlier in podded than in depodded pea plants.  相似文献
