Foundation species control biodiversity and ecosystem processes, but are difficult to identify. In this issue of the Journal of Vegetation Science, Elumeeva et al. show that Festuca varia and Nardus stricta act as foundation species in the Caucasus’ alpine. From the history of mathematics, it is clear that some numerical concepts are far more pervasive than others. In a densely multimodular mind, evolved cognitive abilities lie at the basis of human culture and cognition. One possible way to explain the differential spread and survival of cultural concepts based on this assumption is the epidemiology of culture. This approach explains the relative success of cultural concepts as a function of their fit with intuitions provided by conceptual modules. A wealth of recent evidence from animal, infant, and neuroimaging studies suggests that human numerical competence is rooted in an evolved number module. In this study, I adopted an epidemiological perspective to examine the cultural transmission of numerical concepts in the history of mathematics. Drawing on historical and anthropological data on number concepts, I will demonstrate that positive integers, zero, and negative numbers have divergent cultural evolutionary histories owing to a distinct relationship with the number module. These case studies provide evidence for the claim that science can be explained in terms of evolved cognitive abilities that are universal in Homo sapiens.  相似文献

Reproduction requires resources that cannot be allocated to other functions resulting in direct reproductive costs (i.e. trade-offs between current reproduction and subsequent survival/reproduction). In wild vertebrates, direct reproductive costs have been widely described in females, but their occurrence in males remains to be explored. To fill this gap, we gathered 53 studies on 48 species testing direct reproductive costs in male vertebrates. We found a trade-off between current reproduction and subsequent performances in 29% of the species and in every clade. As 73% of the studied species are birds, we focused on that clade to investigate whether such trade-offs are associated with (i) levels of paternal care, (ii) polygyny or (iii) pace of life. More precisely for this third question, it is expected that fast species (i.e. short lifespan, early maturity, high fecundity) pay a cost in terms of survival, whereas slow species (with opposite characteristics) do so in terms of fecundity. Our findings tend to support this hypothesis. Finally, we pointed out the potential confounding effects that should be accounted for when investigating reproductive costs in males and strongly encourage the investigation of such costs in more clades to understand to what extent our results are relevant for other vertebrates.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon in Maine were once abundant but have become depleted, and are listed as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act. Historically, salmon numbers in Maine may have been as high as 100 000 adults, but habitat loss, pollution and overfishing have contributed to the decline of the species. In 2000, only 110 adults returned to spawn in Maine rivers. Maine produces c. 15 000 metric tons/year of aquacultured Atlantic salmon from a total of nearly 600 coastal net pens. Escapees from these pens may interact with the wild salmon. The dynamics of salmon populations under such conditions are poorly understood. In order to illuminate the role aquaculture may play in such a system, we have developed a model for simulating population trajectories for both wild salmon and competing populations derived from aquaculture escapes. The model simulates a small population of wild salmon based in a stream/estuary system, into which an aquaculture facility is losing fish to escapes. Biological parameters in the model were estimated as much as possible from data in the USFWS report on Maine salmon. We used the model to investigate the consequences of a variety of ecological interactions between the wild and cultured fish including competitive, genetic and disease effects. Initial results indicate that many of these effects allow the aquaculture‐derived population to supplant the wild fish, but that wild populations may still persist under some conditions.  相似文献

Aim We seek biotic and abiotic explanations for differences in lineage sizes of Afromontane sedges (Cyperaceae, Carex) and buttercups (Ranunculaceae, Ranunculus). Location Mountains of sub‐Saharan Africa and Madagascar. Methods We investigated differences in the species richness and diversification rates of 18 lineages of the pan‐temperate plant groups Carex and Ranunculus, established by long‐distance dispersal on African sky islands. We built generalized linear models to test the individual and the cumulative power of biotic and abiotic factors for predicting variation in the size of lineages. Tested variables were: ages of the lineages, their geographic distributions, number of mountain systems occupied, isolation/distance from ancestral areas, elevation range, number of vegetation zones and habitat types in which lineages are found, light requirement and water availability for each lineage, and the sum of the habitat factors, representing habitat heterogeneity. Habitat conservatism was measured by the overlap in habitats among the species within each lineage. Diversification rate changes were investigated using ‘laser’ in R. Results The number of Carex and Ranunculus lineages on the African mountains accumulated gradually through time. The size of these lineages could best be explained by a model combining age and distribution together with a measure of environmental heterogeneity (either elevation and water availability or habitat heterogeneity). Extensive overlap in environmental characteristics and distribution ranges among the species indicates a relatively high degree of conservatism of these characters. Main conclusions Lineages that are species‐rich are those that have the ability and time to occupy many mountain regions and a wide range of habitats. If allopatric or ecological speciation plays a role, then secondary dispersal and/or niche expansion soon obscures the patterns that may have existed at the point of speciation.  相似文献

A dietary supply of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) during the perinatal period is postulated to be important for the neurodevelopmental outcome of children. This paper reviews the results of two large scale intervention trials in which equivalent dietary doses of DHA were assessed. One trial assessed the ex utero effect of DHA supplementation for preterm infants born <33 weeks' gestation while the other trial assessed the in utero effect of DHA supplementation during the second half of pregnancy. Ex utero DHA supplementation, which aimed to achieve the level of DHA accumulation that would occur in the womb, appeared more effective in improving the neurodevelopmental outcome of preterm children rather than in utero DHA supplementation of unborn infants. Significant treatment by sex and treatment by birth weight interactions were noted indicating that boys and girls respond differently to DHA supplementation and that birth weight may also be important in predicating the DHA responsiveness.  相似文献

Numerous studies have relied on microsatellite DNA data to assess the relationships among populations in a phylogenetic framework, converting microsatellite allelic composition of populations into evolutionary distances. Among other coefficients, (deltamu)(2) and R(st) are often employed because they make use of the differences in allele sizes on the basis of the stepwise mutation model. While it has been recognized that some microsatellites can yield disproportionate interpopulation distance estimates, no formal investigation has been conducted to evaluate to what extent such loci could affect the topology of the corresponding dendrograms. Here we show that single loci, displaying extremely large among-population variance, can greatly bias the topology of the phylogenetic tree, using data from European grayling (Thymallus thymallus, Salmonidae) populations. Importantly, we also demonstrate that the inclusion of a single disproportionate locus will lead to an overestimation of the stability of trees assessed using bootstrapping. To avoid this bias, we introduce a simple statistical test for detecting loci with significantly disproportionate variance prior to phylogenetic analyses and further show that exclusion of offending loci eliminates the false increase in phylogram stability.  相似文献

Mental disorders are often thought to be harmful dysfunctions. Jerome Wakefield has argued that such dysfunctions should be understood as failures of naturally selected functions. This suggests, implicitly, that evolutionary biology and other Darwinian disciplines hold important information for anyone working on answering the philosophical question, 'what is a mental disorder?'. In this article, the author argues that Darwinian theory is not only relevant to the understanding of the disrupted functions, but it also sheds light on the disruption itself, as well as on the harm that attends the disruption. The arguments advanced here are partially based on the view that a core feature of Darwinism is that it stresses the environmental relativity of functions and dysfunctions. These arguments show a very close empirical connection between social judgments (values) and dysfunctions (psychopathology), which is of interest for psychiatric theory. Philosophically, they lead to the conclusion that the concept of mental disorder is identical to the concept of mental dysfunction. Consequently, it is both misleading and redundant to conceptualize mental disorders as 'harmful dysfunctions', and not simply as 'mental dysfunctions'.  相似文献

Paridae are among the bird families benefiting from food storing. However, not all its members hoard food. Our objective was to clarify the role of ecological factors in occurrence of food storing. We reviewed the data on major ecological characteristics of the Paridae species and analysed their association with the presence/absence of food storing. Our statistical model revealed that geography (distribution in North America) and taxonomy (genus Poecile) are better predictors of food storing than any of the studied ecological traits. Nevertheless, food-storing Poecile species inhabit mixed or coniferous woodlands with seasonal richness of food, while non-storing species tend to prefer edge and open habitats, where alternative food sources are available. Sociality and territoriality outside breeding season coincides with food storing. The analysis performed within the BaeolophusLophophanesPeriparusPoecile clade with ancestral food storing revealed no factor except continental climate that would explain the persistence of food storing. The phylogenetic analysis of ancestral states of the studied characters allowed us to propose a possible scenario for the emergence of food storing in Paridae. (1) Food storing is not ancestral in Paridae and appeared only once in the common ancestor of the BaeolophusLophophanesPeriparusPoecile group. (2) According to estimation of molecular clock in Paridae, food storing appeared before their radiation in North America.  相似文献
