Abstract

Pointed wooden darts propelled by an atlatl are capable of penetrating the hide of an elephant from close range. Average penetration of 5 em is probably not sufficient to bring about the swift demise of an elephant. Greater penetration might be achieved with wood tipped darts by increasing weight and/or velocity or with narrow diameter darts. Basic information is presented to allow for better experiments in the future.  相似文献

Sixty subjects were tested five times per waking day on two occasions for accuracy and reliability in throwing 20 darts at a target. Two experimental conditions were investigated: following a normal nocturnal sleep (7–8 h sleep, normal) and after having retired to bed 4 h later than normal the previous night but rising at the normal time (3–4 h sleep, sleep deprivation). Sublingual (core) temperature and subjective estimates of alertness and fatigue were measured in all sessions. Performance at throwing darts was assessed by three methods: mean distance of the dart from the bulls-eye; number of times the target was missed; and variability of the scores from the darts thrown. There was no evidence that performance was affected by physical fatigue arising during the course of throwing the 20 darts. All variables showed significant diurnal rhythms, those of alertness and performance being phased over 1 h earlier than core temperature, and that of fatigue over 1 h earlier than the inverse of temperature. Core temperature was not affected by sleep deprivation, but all other variables showed significant changes, indicative of mood and performance decrement. Increasing time awake was associated with decreased alertness and increased fatigue, as well as slight negative effects upon performance. We conclude that the simple task of throwing darts at a target provides information about chronobiological changes in circumstances where time awake and sleep loss might affect psychomotor performance. OBTAINING SKIN SAMPLES FROM LIVING SPERM WHALES   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Samples of sperm whale skin, useful for modern molecular analyses of DNA, can be obtained from living animals either by collecting skin sloughed naturally by the whales, or by using biopsy darts fired from crossbows or compound bows. Sloughed skin was found frequently in warm waters, and particular samples could often be linked to photographs which enabled individuals to be identified. However, sloughed skin seemed less available at higher latitudes. Two types of darts were found to collect skin but collected samples were very small (<4 mm2) and insufficient for repeated DNA fingerprinting analyses. Sperm whales always reacted to darting by "startling" and showing changes of behavior over the next few minutes, but we found no indications of longer-term effects. In warm water studies, collection of sloughed skin seems to be generally effective, but for samples of sperm whale tissue at high latitudes modifications could probably be made to either of the darts in order to obtain larger-sized samples.  相似文献

The combination of 55 mg/ml xylazine hydrochloride and 200 mg/ml ketamine hydrochloride was effective for immobilizing African lions in Tanzania. Nineteen adult females were given between 55 and 110 mg xylazine hydrochloride in the first dart. Initial doses of 110 mg xylazine hydrochloride and 450 mg ketamine hydrochloride equivalent to greater than 0.9 mg/kg xylazine hydrochloride were most effective in achieving rapid immobilization. Lower doses of xylazine hydrochloride required supplementation with ketamine hydrochloride. These doses could be delivered easily in 3-ml darts. The use of lightweight darts and a blowgun was found to be useful as a supplement to longer range dart projector systems since many animals could be approached at short range.  相似文献

Lightweight untethered pneumatic darts were used to biopsy killer whales, Orcinus orca , for genetic and toxicological analysis. Samples of epidermal, dermal, and hypodermal tissue weighing approximately 0.5 g were obtained by 65% of the 91 darts fired during the study. Sufficient DNA for multiple analyses was extracted from the biopsies, which were also used for fatty acid and toxic contaminant analyses. Reactions such as momentary shakes or accelerations were observed after 81% of the dart hits and 53% of the misses. Aversion to the research vessel was assessed by reapproaching target whales after the sampling attempts. In 6% of the hits and 8% of the misses aversion to the research boat increased immediately following the attempt. No similar increases in aversion were seen when killer whales were reapproached one day to one year after being hit. The darts were also tested successfully on humpback whales, Megaptera novaeangliae . In view of the simplicity of the system, its effectiveness in acquiring multipurpose samples, and the apparently short-term disturbance it caused, it is recommended for future cetacean biopsy studies.  相似文献

Rapid withdrawal of females from males at the end of the copulatory sequence (prior to male dismounting) characterizes several primate species. The purpose of this paper is to make a preliminary investigation into possible functional aspects of these “copulatory darts.” Two hypotheses are proposed; (1) females use darts to aid competing males to locate the source of copulation calls; and (2) females dart in order to promote re-mating with the same male. Both hypotheses postulate that darts may thus enhance male-male competition, although acquisition of other benefits may be the primary drive to darting according to the re-mating hypothesis. Using data from 157 copulations collected from six females spread across four groups in a wild population of chacma baboonsPapio cynocephalus ursinus, darting behaviour is described. Within females, darting distance is highly variable. Darting distance is greatest at the time of ovulation (and maximal sexual swelling), and there is some evidence that darting may also be more frequent, and cover greater distances, when the mating male is adult rather than juvenile. While darting behaviour appears unrelated to the presence or absence of ejaculation, it tends to correlate positively with the duration of the female copulation call. These preliminary results are consistent with a mediating role in male-male competition and therefore provide support for both hypotheses.  相似文献

The use of noninvasive collected samples as source of DNA in studies of wild primate populations has increased in recent years. Fresh‐plucked hairs represent an important source of DNA, with relatively high quality and concentration. In this study, we describe a low‐cost noninvasive technique for collecting fresh‐plucked hairs used to obtain DNA samples from free‐ranging black howler monkey populations (Alouatta pigra). We designed and manufactured darts made of wooden dowels, with the anterior part smeared with glue, which were projected with blowpipes to trap howler monkey hairs. All of the materials to make the darts are inexpensive and are available locally. We collected 89 samples from 76 individuals residing in 15 troops, and the total number of hairs obtained was 754. We found no differences in the number of hairs collected among sex–age classes or among localities but the percentage of darts recovered with sample varied among localities. Preliminary results indicate that over 96% of samples yielded DNA suitable for polymerase chain reaction‐based microsatellite marker analysis. The technique proved successful for collecting fresh‐plucked hairs of free‐ranging black howler monkeys without any trauma to the animals and can be easily adapted to obtain samples from other wild primate and mammal species. Morphological measurements were collected from 12 wild and 12 captive mona monkeys (Cercopithecus mona) on the Caribbean island of Grenada. Mona monkeys were introduced to Grenada from Africa approximately 200 to 300 years ago during the slave trade era. Wild monkeys were captured using either 1) a baited treadle-door trap and anesthetic-filled darts fired from a blowpipe, or 2) rifle-fired anesthetic-filled darts. All wild monkeys were released back into the forest after capture and were seen with their original groups within 24 hours of release. Captive monkeys were anesthetized using blowpipe-fired darts. A Ketaset/Rompun mixture was the most effective anesthetic for wild monkeys while Ketaset alone was suitable for captive monkeys. Responses to and recovery times from both drugs varied among individuals. Data on eight linear body measurements, canine length, testicle size, and weight were collected from all monkeys. Adult monkeys were significantly sexually dimorphic across all measurements. Mean adult male weight (―x = 4.7, SD = 0.9, n = 13) was almost twice that of adult females (―x = 2.8, SD = 0.8, n = 7). No significant differences in weight or measurements were found between adult wild and captive males. Preliminary comparisons with morphometrics for African C. mona from the literature showed the upper limit of Grenada mona body length and weight to be smaller than that of African monas for both sexes. These differences may be due to genetic divergence, ecological adaptation, inter-African geographic variation, and/or small sample sizes. From January 1999 to April 2002, 14 free-ranging elk were darted with a mixture of Telazol reconstituted with xylazine hydrochloride (HCl) in a forested habitat in southwestern Oklahoma and north-central Arkansas. Elk were darted from ground blinds, tree stands, or a vehicle at distances of 14-46 m and were recovered 37-274 m from the dart site. Elk were located using radiotelemetry with 3-cc disposable Pneu-dart transmitter darts. Mean+/-SD dose of Telazol and xylazine HCl was 590+/-192 mg/ml and 276+/-153 mg/ml, respectively, and mean time to standing after injection of reversal agent was 27 min (range: 1-65 min). The combination of Telazol and xylazine HCl successfully immobilized free-ranging elk, and transmitter-equipped darts permitted successful location of sedated elk by two people in areas of dense forest cover. The dose required to sedate elk appeared to vary depending on physiology and behavior, but no drug-induced mortality occurred despite the wide variance in the doses administered. We recommend 500 mg Telazol reconstituted with 300 mg xylazine HCl as an initial dose for a >or=200 kg elk. If needed to achieve full sedation, up to 3 additional ml of the mixture may be administered without adverse effects.  相似文献

We performed a literature survey on the history of remote injection, discovering new aspects of the beginning and technical development of remote drug delivery systems. According to an early travelogue from the 1920s aboriginal natives used low dosis of muscle-paralyzing drugs in combination with darts and blowpipes for the temporarily immobilzation and live-capture of animals in the rainforest. Another field report gives an account of glass-projectiles filled with drugs, fired into tigers for remote immoblization in the late 1950s.  相似文献

Summary Dart formation in Helix aspersa has been investigated by SEM of isolated darts at progressive stages in their development, and by histology of dart sacs at the same times. Dart formation begins at the tip of a tubercle where a small group of epithelial cells secrete an organic material filling a small CaCO3 cone that is the first mineralized part of the shaft. Subsequent secretory activity by an increasing area of the tubercle epithelium results in an increase in the diameter and anterior lengthening of the shaft. Continued secretion by the tubercle and dart sac epithelium produces the flare and finally the corona. A pattern of deposition is also evident in the fine structure of the mineral. In the shaft and vanes there is an inner layer of spherulitic prismatic structure which is covered by a layer of irregular patches of simple prismatic structure. The outermost layer of the shaft and vanes has a continuous simple prismatic structure. Two layers are present in the flare, an inner granular amorphous layer and an outer spherulitic prismatic layer. The corona consists of a single rarefied prismatic layer. A mechanism of dart formation is suggested that involves two types of organic matrix, calcifying and non-calcifying. Measurements of the calcium content of darts, dart sacs, and collars indicate that the hemolymph is the probable source of calcium for the dart.  相似文献

Methods for capturing and marking howler monkeys for ecological studies are discussed. Systems for capturing and handling animals are compared. A dart with liquid Sernylan for capture and Sernylan or Ketamine as a holding drug was preferred to darts using powdered succinylcholine chloride (SCC) and ether. The effectiveness of both Sernylan and SCC is compared and dosages are given for Sernylan in howler monkeys and SCC for howlers and capuchins. The advantages of Ketamine over ether as a holding drug are discussed. Animals can be marked with leg-bands, collars, and freeze-branding.  相似文献

A female rat will display a repertoire of behaviors during a sexual encounter with a male rat including sexually receptive (the lordosis response) and proceptive (hopping, darting) behaviors. In addition, when given the opportunity, a sexually receptive female rat will approach and withdraw from the male rat, controlling the timing of the receipt of mounts, intromissions, and ejaculations, a behavior known as paced mating behavior. The present experiments tested the hypotheses (1) that progesterone regulates paced mating behavior, and (2) that multiple hormone regimens used previously to induce sexual receptivity have the same effect on paced mating behavior. Paced mating behavior was assessed in sexually receptive ovariectomized female rats after treatment with: (1) estradiol benzoate (EB; 30.0 mg/kg) followed by a range of doses of progesterone (P; 1.0-8.0 mg/kg), (2) two pulses of unesterified estradiol (E2; 2.0 microg/rat) followed by 1.0 mg/rat of P, and (3) EB alone (5.0 microg/rat) for 6 days. No differences in sexual receptivity or in paced mating behavior were observed across doses of P (1.0-8.0 mg/kg). In contrast, the number of hops and darts per min increased with the dose of P administered. E2 + P administration resulted in slightly, but significantly, lower levels of sexual receptivity along with significantly longer contact-return latencies following an intromission in relation to the other treatment conditions. In addition, female rats exhibited fewer hops and darts per min in response to E2 + P than in response to EB + 8.0 mg/kg of P. The administration of EB alone for 6 days induced levels of receptivity and paced mating behavior indistinguishable from EB + P, while eliciting significantly fewer hops and darts per min than the EB + 8.0 mg/kg P treatment condition. Hormone priming regimen had no effect on the percentage of exits displayed during the paced mating tests in any experimental phase. Dose of P had no effect on paced mating behavior in sexually receptive rats. In addition, P does not appear to be necessary for the display of paced mating behavior following long-term treatment with EB. In contrast, the pulsatile administration of E2 + P induced a different pattern of paced mating behavior in sexually receptive rats.  相似文献

Techniques are described for capturing and marking redtail monkeys (Cercopithecus ascanius). An air-powered darting rifle and syringe darts loaded with a Ketamine-Rompun mixture were used for capture. Ketamine was used for maintaining anesthesia. Monkeys were darted 48 times and captured 27 times. In 24 of the 27 captures, the monkeys were released unharmed. Adult males were marked with radiotransmitters attached to collars of nylon webbing. Females received nylon webbing collars with colorcoded plastic washers for identification.  相似文献

Four hundred and eleven African buffaloes were immobilized with etorphine hydrochloride (M99, Reckitts) and sampled under difficult conditions in North Western Botswana. The buffaloes were darted from a helicopter in 36 days. 584 darts were fired giving a success rate of 70-5%. Various age groups in three separate buffalo populations were included. The technique and difficulties encountered when working from a helicopter are described. Mechanical failure of the darting equipment was negligible. A breakdown of the costs involved is given and a comparison made with similar work carried out solely from land vehicles.  相似文献

Sexual selection and sexual conflict have been shown to playkey roles in the evolution of species with separate sexes. Experimentalevidence is accumulating that this is also true for simultaneoushermaphrodites. For example, many species of land snails forcefullystab their mating partners with love darts. In the brown gardensnail (Helix aspersa, now called Cantareus asperses), this dartincreases sperm storage and paternity, probably via the transferof an allohormone that inhibits sperm digestion. A recent interspeciescomparison of dart-possessing land snails revealed coevolutionbetween darts and spermatophore-receiving organs that is consistentwith counteradaptation against an allohormonal manipulation. The great pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis) seems to use a seminalproduct to manipulate its partner and mates in the male rolewhen enough seminal fluid is available in the prostate gland.Receipt of semen not only initiates egg laying in virgin animals, but also feminizes the mating partner later in life. These increasesin the female function have been shown to go at the expenseof growth and seminal fluid production of the sperm recipient.Although in Helix, and probably also Lymnaea, the sperm donorbenefits from the induced changes through increased fertilizationsuccess, the sperm recipient may experience injury, imposedreallocation of resources, and altered sperm storage. Thesefindings support the existence of sexual conflict in simultaneouslyhermaphroditic snails, and its importance for the evolutionof mating behaviors and reproductive morphologies is discussed.  相似文献

In previous studies, central administration of the oxytocin (OT) antagonist d(CH2)5[Tyr(Me)2, Thr4, Tyr-NH(9)2]OVT (OTA1) blocked receptive and proceptive components of female sexual behavior (FSB) and increased male-directed agonistic behavior when given before progesterone (P) treatment in estradiol-primed female rats but not when given shortly before behavioral testing 4-6 h after P. Because the considerable V(1a) antagonist potency of OTA1 may have contributed to these results, we tested the effects of the far more selective OT antagonist desGly-NH2, d(CH2)5[d-Tyr2, Thr4]OVT (OTA2). In ovariectomized, estradiol benzoate-primed (1 microg x 2 days sc) rats, icv infusion of OTA2 (1 microg) prior to P injection (250 microg sc) significantly suppressed lordosis and hops and darts and trended toward significantly increasing male-directed kicks during testing at 4 and 6 h. Infusion of OTA2 3 h and 40 min after P did not alter behavior at 4 and 6 h after P but significantly decreased lordosis as well as hops and darts and increased male-directed kicks 8-12 h after P. These results provide further evidence that central OT receptor activation shortly after P treatment contributes to the subsequent onset and early expression of FSB and demonstrate, for the first time, that OT receptor activation at later time points also contributes to maintaining FSB. The FSB-stimulating effect of central OT appears to persist for several hours.  相似文献

Juvenile trout Oncorhynchus mykiss did not react to the odours of Diplostomum sp. Cercariae alone, indicating that they were incapable of detecting the parasites directly. However, they increased the number of random darts as well as the amount of time spent motionless when exposed to the odours of a conspecific that was being infected by Diplostomum cercariae. These results suggest that even the minor damage inflicted by the cercariae to the fish's skin was enough to cause the release of alarm substances. The effectiveness of the fish's response with respect to the avoidance of parasites remains to be demonstrated.  相似文献

Howler monkey capture is an arduous and expensive task requiring trained and specialized professionals. We compared strategies and methods to most efficiently capture Alouatta guariba clamitans in remnants of the Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro and its bordering states of Minas Gerais and São Paulo. We tested whether or not the success of expeditions in the forest with anesthetic darts, nets, and baited traps differed with and without the support of an information network, a contact chain built with key institutions and inhabitants to continuously monitor howler monkey presence. The influence of forest conditions (vegetation type and fragment size) upon darting success was also evaluated. We captured 24 free‐living A. guariba clamitans. No howler monkey was caught with traps, probably due to the predominantly folivore feeding to high local plant diversity providing a great variety of food options. Captures based on an information network were significantly more efficient in terms of numbers of caught monkeys than without it. Captures with darts were considerably more efficient when performed in semideciduous forests and small forest fragments as opposed to ombrophilous forests or large woods. Although we walked great distances within the forest searching for howler monkeys, all but one animal were captured at the forest fringes. Hindrances to search and the darting method in the Atlantic Forest, for example, the steep terrain, high tree canopies, hunt pressure, and low A. guariba clamitans population density, were mitigated with the use of the information network in this monkey capture. Moreover, the information network enhanced the surveillance of zoonotic diseases, which howler monkeys and other nonhuman primates are reservoirs in Brazil, such as malaria and yellow fever.  相似文献

Abstract: Several species of cetaceans naturally slough visible quantities of skin. We have investigated the prospect of using this material as a viable alternative to the use of biopsy darts for the collection of samples for molecular analysis. Pieces of skin were collected from free-ranging individuals of three different species—the humpback ( Megaptera novaeangliae) , sperm ( Physeter macrocephalus ) and right whales ( Eubalaena glacialis ). DNA was extracted from 11 pieces of sloughed skin and DNA "fingerprint" profiles prepared. All samples contained DNA of both sufficient quality and quantity for genetic analysis. The applicability of this approach is discussed generally in relation to answering problems about the population structure and breeding systems of cetaceans.  相似文献
