The relation between blood flow and bone mineral density (BMD) of periarticular bone was examined in an in vivo model of joint instability. Eighty mature New Zealand White rabbits were randomly assigned to experimental [anterior cruciate ligament transection (ACLX)], sham-operated control, or age-matched normal control groups. Experimental rabbits underwent unilateral transection of the right anterior cruciate ligament, and the nonoperated left [contralateral (Cntra)] limb was a within-animal control. BMD and blood flow to the periarticular bone in the femoral condyles were assessed in each group at 2, 4, 6, 14, and 48 wk postsurgery, using quantitative computed tomography scanning and entrapment of colored microspheres. BMD was significantly lower (5%) in the ACLX compared with Cntra limbs. Periarticular bone blood flow in the ACLX limbs was significantly greater than in the Cntra limb (29%) in the early stages (6 wk) after injury. Up to 48 wk post-ACLX, a significant correlation was found between increased blood flow and decreased BMD in the periarticular bone of the femoral condyles in the ACLX limbs. This correlation suggested that heightened blood flow may be linked to mechanisms of bone adaptation in joints after ligament injury.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to examine differences in perception of the importance of weight training as a part of general and sport-specific training for selected collegiate men and women student-athletes. Subjects included 139 men and 165 women varsity National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III student-athletes who participated in the following sports: baseball, basketball, field hockey, football, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track & field, or volleyball. Men student-athletes were significantly more likely to consider weight training essential to their general and sport-specific training than women student-athletes, as measured by the Training Information Survey. Additionally, men student-athletes were found to be significantly more competitive and win-oriented than women student-athletes (p < 0.001) as measured by the Sport Orientation Questionnaire, which is consistent with previous research. Results also showed that only highly goal-oriented student-athletes perceived weight training as: (a) important to both men and women and (b) having both feminine and masculine traits. It was concluded that significant gender differences exist in the perceived importance of weight training and that the constructs of competitiveness, win and goal orientation, may influence a student-athlete's perception of the importance of weight training. Coaches of both men and women student-athletes must teach that weight training is important for female and male student-athletes.  相似文献

The possible association of the 190G-->A (Val64Ile) polymorphism of the CC chemokine receptor-2 gene (CCR2) with bone mineral density (BMD) was examined in 2215 subjects (1125 men, 1090 women), all of whom were community-dwelling individuals aged 40 to 79 years. Among men aged < 60 years, BMD for the distal radius, lumbar spine, or Ward's triangle was significantly greater in those with the AA genotype than in those with the GG or GA genotypes. For postmenopausal women, BMD for the distal radius or femoral neck was significantly greater in those with the AA genotype than in those with the GG or GA genotypes. In contrast, for men aged > or =60 years and for premenopausal women, BMD was not associated with the CCR2 genotype. These results suggest that CCR2 may be a new candidate for a susceptibility locus for bone mass in middle-aged men and postmenopausal women.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to describe motor nerve conduction velocity in upper and lower extremities in sportsmen. Fifteen high-level field hockey players, seventeen soccer players and ten tennis players were recruited from the Polish National Field Hockey League, Polish Soccer League Clubs, and Polish Tennis Association clubs, respectively. The control group comprised of seventeen healthy, non-active young men. Nerve conduction velocities of ulnar and tibial nerve were assessed with NeuroScreen electromyograph (Toennies, Germany) equipped with standard techniques of supramaximal percutaneus stimulation with constant current and surface electrodes. No significant differences in motor nerve conduction velocities were found between dominant and non-dominant limbs in each studied group. Ulnar nerve conduction velocity measured from above elbow to below elbow was significantly lower only in the field hockey players' dominant limb. Tibial conduction velocity of the field hockey players' non-dominant lower limb was higher in comparison to the tennis players and the control group. There was no significant correlation between body mass and NCV as well as between height of subjects and NCV in both athletes or non-athletes. A slight trend towards a lower TCV values in athletes with longer duration of practicing sport was found. It was most pronounced in the non-dominant lower extremity of field hockey players.  相似文献

Humans demonstrate species-wide bilateral asymmetry in long bone dimensions. Previous studies have documented greater right-biases in upper limb bone dimensions--especially in length and diaphyseal breadth--as well as more asymmetry in the upper limb when compared with the lower limb. Some studies have reported left-bias in lower limb bone dimensions, which, combined with the contralateral asymmetry in upper limbs, has been termed "crossed symmetry." The examination of sexual dimorphism and population variation in asymmetry has been limited. This study re-examines these topics in a large, geographically and temporally diverse sample of 780 Holocene adult humans. Fourteen bilateral measures were taken, including maximum lengths, articular and peri-articular breadths, and diaphyseal breadths of the femur, tibia, humerus, and radius. Dimensions were converted into percentage directional (%DA) and absolute (%AA) asymmetries. Results reveal that average diaphyseal breadths in both the upper and lower limbs have the greatest absolute and directional asymmetry among all populations, with lower asymmetry evident in maximum lengths or articular dimensions. Upper limb bones demonstrate a systematic right-bias in all dimensions, while lower limb elements have biases closer to zero %DA, but with slight left-bias in diaphyseal breadths and femoral length. Crossed symmetry exists within individuals between similar dimensions of the upper and lower limbs. Females have more asymmetric and right-biased upper limb maximum lengths, while males have greater humeral diaphyseal and head breadth %DAs. The lower limb demonstrates little sexual dimorphism in asymmetry. Industrial groups exhibit relatively less asymmetry than pre-industrial humans and less dimorphism in asymmetry. A mixture of influences from both genetic and behavioral factors is implicated as the source of these patterns.  相似文献

Evolutionary theories of aging posit that greater reproductive effort causes somatic decline given a fundamental trade-off between investing energy in reproduction and repair. Few studies in high fertility human populations support this hypothesis, and problems of phenotypic correlation can obscure the expected trade-off between reproduction and somatic condition. This cross-sectional study investigates whether greater reproductive effort is associated with reduced calcaneal bone mineral density (BMD) among female Tsimane forager-farmers of lowland Bolivia. We also investigate whether female Tsimane BMD values are lower than sex- and age-matched US reference values, despite the fact that Tsimane engage in higher physical activity levels that can increase mechanical loading. To measure calcaneal BMD, quantitative ultrasonography was performed on 130 women (mean ± SD age = 36.6 ± 15.7, range = 15–75) that were recruited regardless of past or current reproductive status. Anthropometric and demographic data were collected during routine medical exams. As predicted, higher parity, short inter-birth interval, and earlier age at first birth are associated with reduced BMD among Tsimane women after adjusting for potential confounders. Population-level differences are apparent prior to the onset of reproduction, and age-related decline in BMD is greater among Tsimane compared with American women. Greater cumulative reproductive burden may lower calcaneal BMD individually and jointly with other lifestyle and heritable factors. Fitness impacts of kin transfers in adulthood may determine the value of investments in bone remodeling, and thus affect selection on age-profiles of bone mineral loss. The aim of the study was to estimate the differences in bone mineral density (BMD) at three skeletal sites, with regard to age and menopausal status. The study was conducted between 2001 and 2006 in the Polish city of Wroc?aw and the sample was comprised of 440 healthy female inhabitants aged 40–88 years. The measurements of bone mineral density were taken at three sites: femoral neck, Ward's triangle and trochanter major. Two bone mineral density characteristics were used in further analysis: absolute measure of bone mineral density (BMD) expressed in g/(100 mm)2, and % of BMD of the peak value calculated for young adults (20–45, USA reference population). Pre- and postmenopausal status was defined according to occurrence of menstruation within the last 60 days. The changes in bone mineral density with age showed significantly different patterns in different skeletal sites. While the decrease in bone mineral density in the femoral neck and Ward's triangle were parallel and gradual, the changes in trochanter major were very small and between the age groups 51–55 and 71–75, nearly unnoticeable. A comparison between pre- and postmenopausal women aged 46–55, showed a significant effect of menopausal status. The average bone mineral densities in the three skeletal sites were higher in premenopausal than in postmenopausal women. The highest value of bone mineral density was found in the femoral neck, significantly lower in Ward's triangle, and a little lower (non-significantly) in the trochanter major than in the Ward's triangle. Postmenopausal women had a little higher BMD value in the trochanter major than in the Ward's triangle site.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine if National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I men's tennis programs are in compliance with suggested current preactivity and postactivity stretching protocols. Questionnaires were sent to NCAA Division I men's tennis programs in the USA. Seventy-six coaches (73 men and 3 women) participated in the study. The results of the Chi-Square analysis suggest that the number of years of head coaching experience had a significant relationship with the preactivity stretching routines employed by coaches (p = 0.029). A significant difference was found between preactivity stretching routines and the key sources of influence for the foundation of knowledge regarding preactivity stretching (p = 0.012). Some results indicate that many tennis coaches do not use current suggested practices for preactivity stretching. The results of this study indicate that certification may influence how well research guidelines are followed. Further research is needed to delineate how these factors affect coaching decisions.  相似文献

To date, hormonal influence in interspecies interaction has not been examined. In a study of a dog agility competition among human/dog teams, men's pre-competition basal testosterone (T) levels were positively related to changes in dogs' cortisol levels from pre- to post-competition, but only among losing teams. Furthermore, pre-competition basal T in men on losing teams predicted more than half of the variance in dogs' cortisol change. This relationship was mediated through men's punitive and affiliative behaviors towards their dogs immediately after competition. Men's T change was also a significant predictor of dogs' change in cortisol such that men who experienced greater decreases in T after a loss were associated with dogs that experienced greater increases in cortisol. In winning teams, men's pre-competition T and T changes were unrelated to dogs' cortisol changes. These results are discussed in light of T as a proxy for dominance motivation as well as T's relation to stress across the species boundary.  相似文献

Despite increasing interest in age- and gender-related bone alterations, data on trabecular microstructure at the proximal tibia are scarce. The aim of this study was to identify trabecular microstructural change at the human proximal tibia with age and gender, using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Fifty-six proximal tibias from 28 Japanese men and women (57-98 years of age) were used in this study. The subjects were chosen to give an even age and gender distribution. Both women and men were divided into three age groups, middle (57-68 years), old (72-82 years) and elderly (87-98 years) groups. The trabecular bone specimens from the medial compartment of the proximal tibial metaphysis were examined. Trabecular bone mineral density (BMD), bone volume fraction (BV/TV) and trabecular thickness (Tb.Th) decreased between the middle-aged and elderly groups similarly in women and men. However, trabecular number (Tb.N) decreased by 13% between the middle-aged and elderly groups in women and nearly double that in men. As compared with women, men had higher BV/TV and lower trabecular separation (Tb.Sp) in the old age and elderly groups, and higher Tb.N and connectivity density (Conn.D) in the elderly group. Increased trabecular resorbing surfaces, perforated or disconnected trabeculae and microcallus formations were observed with age. These findings indicate that both BMD and BV/TV decreased at the proximal tibia with age similarly for women and men, but significant differences between women and men were observed for some microstructural parameters. These findings illustrate potential mechanisms underlying osteoporotic proximal tibial fracture.  相似文献

The ability to jump high is considered important in a number of sports. It is commonly accepted that the use of the arms and a counter movement increase jump height. In some sport situations (e.g., volley ball block, basketball rebound), athletes may not be able to utilize a counter movement or arm swing. The purpose of this study is to examine gender differences in the contribution of the arm swing and counter movement to vertical jump height. Fifty college students, 25 men (age = 21.4 +/- 1.7 years, height = 182.2 +/- 8 cm, weight = 83.7 +/- 12.4 kg) and 25 women (age = 20.7 +/- 1.6 years, height = 166.7 +/- 6.3 cm, weight = 61.5 +/- 7.0 kg), performed 4 jumping movements: squat jumps with hands on hips (SNA), counter movement jump with hands on hips (CMNA), squat jump with arm swing (SA), and counter movement with arm swing (CMA). Significant differences were found between men's and women's performance, as well as between each type of jump within each gender. A mixed-model analysis of variance detected gender differences with respect to changes in the jumping movement. For both sexes the jumps in order from worst to best were SNA, CMNA, SA, and CMA. Peak power values for men were 4,057, 4,020, 4,644, and 4,747 W, respectively, for the 4 jumps. The female power values were 2,543, 2,445, 2,842, and 2,788 W, respectively, for the 4 jumps. Arms increased jump height more than a counter movement for both genders, with jump heights for men at 29.6, 31, 36, and 38 cm, respectively, and those of women 21, 22, 26, and 27 cm, respectively. Use of the arms was found to increase the jump height of the men significantly more than that of women. Changes in jumping movements affect men and women differently. The greater increase in jump height for the men when using the arm swing could be because of greater upper body strength of men compared with women. This could have applications to training and upper body strength and also to modeling of jumping movements.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Chromosome 11q has not only been found to contain mutations responsible for the several Mendelian disorders of the skeleton, but it has also been linked to bone mineral density (BMD) variation in several genome-wide linkage studies. Furthermore, quantitative trait loci (QTL) affecting BMD in inbred mice and baboons have been mapped to a region syntenic to human chromosome 11q. The aim of the present study is to determine whether there is a QTL for BMD variation on chromosome 11q in the Chinese population. METHODS: Nineteen microsatellite markers were genotyped for a 75 cM region on 11q13-25 in 306 Chinese families with 1,459 subjects. BMD (g/cm(2)) was measured by DXA. Linkage analyses were performed using the variance component linkage analysis method implemented in Merlin software. RESULTS: For women, a maximum LOD score of 1.62 was achieved at 90.8 cM on 11q21 near the marker D11S4175 for femoral neck BMD; LOD scores greater than 1.0 were observed on 11q13 for trochanter BMD. For men, a maximum LOD score of 1.57 was achieved at 135.8 cM on 11q24 near the marker D11S4126 for total hip BMD. CONCLUSION: We have not only replicated the previous linkage finding on chromosome 11q but also identified two sex-specific QTL that contribute to BMD variation in Chinese women and men.  相似文献

Asymmetry in the alignment of the lower limbs during weight-bearing activities is associated with patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS), caused by an increase in patellofemoral (PF) joint stress. High neuromuscular demands are placed on the lower limb during the propulsion phase of the single leg triple hop test (SLTHT), which may influence biomechanical behavior. The aim of the present cross-sectional study was to compare kinematic, kinetic and muscle activity in the trunk and lower limb during propulsion in the SLTHT using women with PFPS and pain free controls. The following measurements were made using 20 women with PFPS and 20 controls during propulsion in the SLTHT: kinematics of the trunk, pelvis, hip, and knee; kinetics of the hip, knee and ankle; and muscle activation of the gluteus maximus (GM), gluteus medius (GMed), biceps femoris (BF) and vastus lateralis (VL). Differences between groups were calculated using three separate sets of multivariate analysis of variance for kinematics, kinetics, and electromyographic data. Women with PFPS exhibited ipsilateral trunk lean; greater trunk flexion; greater contralateral pelvic drop; greater hip adduction and internal rotation; greater ankle pronation; greater internal hip abductor and ankle supinator moments; lower internal hip, knee and ankle extensor moments; and greater GM, GMed, BL, and VL muscle activity. The results of the present study are related to abnormal movement patterns in women with PFPS. We speculated that these findings constitute strategies to control a deficient dynamic alignment of the trunk and lower limb and to avoid PF pain. However, the greater BF and VL activity and the extensor pattern found for the hip, knee, and ankle of women with PFPS may contribute to increased PF stress.  相似文献

We examined whether a -34T --> C polymorphism of the gene for cytochrome P450, family 17, subfamily A, polypeptide 1 (CYP17A1), a -493G --> T polymorphism of the microsomal triglyceride transfer protein gene (MTP), and a CGG repeat polymorphism of the very low density lipoprotein receptor gene (VLDLR) were associated with bone mineral density (BMD) in community-dwelling Japanese women and men. The -34T --> C polymorphism of CYP17A1 was associated with BMD in postmenopausal women, with the CC genotype being related to increased BMD. The -493G --> T polymorphism of MTP was associated with BMD in premenopausal women, with the TT genotype being related to increased BMD. The CGG repeat polymorphism of VLDLR was associated with BMD in men, with two (CGG)(n > or= 8) alleles being related to increased BMD. These results suggest that CYP17A1 and MTP are susceptibility loci for increased BMD in postmenopausal and premenopausal Japanese women, respectively, and that VLDLR constitutes such a locus in Japanese men.  相似文献

Loss of meniscal function due to injury or partial meniscectomy is common and represents a significant risk factor for premature osteoarthritis. The menisci can influence the transverse plane movements (anterior–posterior (AP) translation and internal–external (IE) rotation) of the knee during walking. While walking is the most frequent activity of daily living, the kinematic differences at the knee during walking associated with the meniscal injury are not well understood. This study examined the influence of partial medial meniscectomy (PMM) on the kinematics and kinetics of the knee during the stance phase of gait by testing the differences in anterior–posterior translation, internal–external rotation, knee flexion range of movement, peak flexion/extension moments, and adduction moments between the PMM and healthy contralateral limbs. Ten patients (45±9 years old, height 1.75±0.06 m, weight 76.7±13.5 kg) who had undergone partial medial meniscectomy (33±100 months post-op) in one limb with a healthy contralateral limb were tested during normal walking. The contralateral limb was compared to a matched control group and no differences were found. The primary kinematic difference was a significantly greater external rotation (3.2°) of the tibia that existed through stance phase, with 8 of 10 subjects demonstrating the same pattern. The PMM subjects also exhibited significantly lower peak flexion and extension moments in their PMM limbs. The altered rotational position found likely results in changes of tibio-femoral contact during walking and could cause the type of degenerative changes found in the articular cartilage following meniscal injury.  相似文献

Human crawling performance and technique are of broad interest to roboticists, biomechanists, and military personnel. This study explores the variables that define crawling performance in the context of an outdoor obstacle course used by military organizations worldwide to evaluate the effects of load and personal equipment on warfighter performance. Crawling kinematics, measured from four body-worn inertial measurement units (IMUs) attached to the upper arms and thighs, are recorded for thirty-three participants. The IMU data is distilled to four metrics of crawling performance; namely, crawl speed, crawl stride time, ipsilateral limb coordination, and contralateral limb coordination. We hypothesize that higher performance (as identified by higher crawl speeds) is associated with more coordinated limbs and lower stride times. A cluster analysis groups participants into high and low performers exhibiting statistically significant differences across the four performance metrics. In particular, high performers exhibit superior limb coordination associated with a “diagonal gait” in which contralateral limbs move largely in-phase to produce faster crawl speeds and shorter crawl stride times. In contrast, low performers crawl at slower speeds with longer crawl stride times and less limb coordination. Beyond these conclusions, a major contribution of this study is a method for deploying wearable IMUs to study crawling in contextually relevant (i.e. non-laboratory) environments.  相似文献
