The divergent molar characteristics of Pan troglodytes and Pongo pygmaeus provide an instructive paradigm for examining the adaptive form-function relationship between molar enamel thickness and food hardness. Although both species exhibit a categorical preference for ripe fruit over other food objects, the thick enamel and crenulated occlusal surface of Pongo molar teeth predict a diet that is more resistant to deformation (hard) and fracture (tough) than the diet of Pan. We confirm these predictions with behavioral observations of Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii and Pongo pygmaeus wurmbii in the wild and describe the mechanical properties of foods utilized during periods when preferred foods are scarce. Such fallback foods may have exerted a selective pressure on tooth evolution, particularly molar enamel thinness, which is interpreted as a functional adaptation to seasonal folivory and a derived character trait within the hominoid clade. The thick enamel and crenulated occlusal surface of Pongo molars is interpreted as a functional adaptation to the routine consumption of relatively tough and hard foods. We discuss the implications of these interpretations for inferring the diet of hominin species, which possessed varying degrees of thick molar enamel. These data, which are among the first reported for hominoid primates, fill an important empirical void for evaluating the mechanical plausibility of putative hominin food objects. 相似文献

Considerable attention has been devoted to understanding phalangeal curvature in primates, particularly with regard to locomotion.
Previous work has found that increased phalangeal curvature may be indicative of increased grasping during suspensory and
climbing behaviors, but the details of this relationship, particularly as regards feet, is still unclear. Using behavioral
studies to predict an interspecific gradient of variation in pedal phalangeal curvature, I collected digital data from the
third and fifth digit proximal pedal phalanges in adult Gorilla gorilla, Pan troglodytes, and Pongo pygmaeus and calculated included angles of phalangeal curvature to assess the appropriateness of pooling digits within taxa and evaluate
the association between variation in pedal phalangeal curvature and frequency of climbing behavior. I also used an ontogenetic
sample of Pan troglodytes to evaluate the postnatal relationship between variation in phalangeal curvature and grasping behaviors. I found intraspecific
variation in phalangeal curvature suggesting among-digit variation in grasping behaviors. Curvature of Pongo was significantly greater than of both Pan and Gorilla. In contrast, Pan was significantly more curved than Gorilla only in comparison of third digits. Ontogenetic decreases in pedal phalangeal curvature among Pan troglodytes accorded well with postnatal decreases in documented climbing frequency. These findings largely support earlier work regarding
the association between arboreal grasping and phalangeal curvature, and provide a unique intraspecific analysis that illuminates
a number of areas where our knowledge of the behavioral and biomechanical determinants of phalangeal curvature should be explored
further, particularly with respect to the role of among-digit variation in phalangeal curvature. 相似文献

Electromyographic recordings were taken from all heads of the triceps brachii and biceps brachii muscles and from the anconeus, brachialis, and brachioradialis muscles in a chimpanzee and an orangutan as they stood still and walked quadrupedally on horizontal and inclined surfaces, engaged in suspensory behavior, reached overhead, and manipulated a variety of foods and artifacts. Like the gorilla (Tuttle and Basmajian, 1974a), the chimpanzee and orangutan possess special close-packed positioning mechanisms that allow the bulky muscles that cross their elbow joints to remain silent during quiet pendant suspension. We found no major myological features that would dramatically separate the arms of knuckle-walking African apes from those of the orangutan. With a few exceptions, which could as well be attributed to individual variation as to interspecific differences, the brachial muscles acted similarly during quadrupedal positional behaviors, irrespective of whether the hands of the subjects were knuckled (African apes), fisted (chimpanzee and orangutan), or placed in modified palmigrade postures (orangutan). Evolutionary transformations, from brachial and elbow complexes like those of Pongo to ones like Pan, or vice versa, would probably be achieved quite readily as the species changed its substrate preferences and positional habits. 相似文献

The ability to rehearse possible future courses of action in the mind is an important feature of advanced social cognition in humans, and the "social brain" hypothesis implies that it might also be a feature of primate social cognition. We tested two chimpanzees, six orangutans and 63 children aged 3-7 years on a set of four puzzle boxes, half of which were presented with an opportunity to observe the box before being allowed to open it ("prior view"), the others being given without an opportunity to examine the boxes before handling them ("no prior view"). When learning effects are partialled out, puzzle boxes in the "prior view" condition were opened significantly faster than boxes given in the "no prior view" condition by the children, but not by either of the great apes. The three species differ significantly in the speed with which they opened boxes in the "no prior view" condition. The three species' performance on this task was a function of relative frontal lobe volume, suggesting that it may be possible to identify quantitative neuropsychological differences between species. 相似文献

A central issue in socioecology is the nature of the relationship between an organism's environment and its social structure. In chimpanzees, the fission-fusion social system is thought to minimize feeding competition for primary dietary components: ephemeral, dispersed patches of ripe fruit. Intragroup feeding competition is thought to force individuals into small parties. Informal observations in the Sonso region of the Budongo forest had suggested that in this habitat, food supply was such that feeding competition was less important in determining grouping patterns than elsewhere. We used data collected on food supply and party sizes over a 4-year period to investigate this suggestion. In accord with theoretical expectation, sizes of foraging parties fluctuated with the size of food patches. However, party sizes showed either negative or no relationship with habitat-wide measures of food abundance. Likewise party sizes showed little relationship to overall measures of food dispersion. For important dietary items, both fruit and leaves had patchy distributions, though the degree of clumping was not strong, and fruit was not more clumped than leaves. Generally, abundant food appeared to be less patchy, and chimpanzees appeared to use more patches as food became more abundant rather than forming larger parties. We suggest that both dispersal and abundance need to be considered when investigating the impact of food supply on grouping patterns, and that the importance of food as a factor in determining chimpanzee grouping patterns declines with increasing levels of abundance. 相似文献

Extant hominoids, including humans, are well known for their inability to swim instinctively. We report swimming and diving in two captive apes using visual observation and video recording. One common chimpanzee and one orangutan swam repeatedly at the water surface over a distance of 2–6 m; both individuals submerged repeatedly. We show that apes are able to overcome their negative buoyancy by deliberate swimming, using movements which deviate from the doggy‐paddle pattern observed in other primates. We suggest that apes' poor swimming ability is due to behavioral, anatomical, and neuromotor changes related to an adaptation to arboreal life in their early phylogeny. This strong adaptive focus on arboreal life led to decreased opportunities to interact with water bodies and consequently to a reduction of selective pressure to maintain innate swimming behavior. As the doggy paddle is associated with quadrupedal walking, a deviation from terrestrial locomotion might have interfered with the fixed rhythmic action patterns responsible for innate swimming. Ovarian function in female hominoids is sensitive to both energy flux and energy balance, resulting in a reduced probability of conception during periods when a successful reproductive outcome is less likely. However, the extent to which energetic factors constrain gonadal function in male hominoids is not clear. We examined the effects of both acute and chronic variation in energy availability on urinary testosterone (T) levels in adult male chimpanzees. Acute changes in energy availability, which were assayed by means of observational data on feeding behavior, did not result in decreased T production for 11 individuals at Kibale National Park, Uganda. Chronic energy shortages, on the other hand, may be associated with lower T levels in this population. Adult males in Kibale (n=11), who maintain suboptimal access to energy, exhibit significantly lower urinary T levels than males in captivity (n=11), who are more sedentary and better fed. These results suggest that data on hormonal function in captive chimpanzees should be interpreted with caution because individuals may produce T at levels well above those that are typical in the wild. They also suggest that short-term variations in T levels in male hominoids are more likely to be explained by social factors than by energetic ones. 相似文献

We observed 36 captive great apes [31 chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes), 2 bonobos (Pan paniscus), and 3 orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus)] reaching for items of food and engaging in other spontaneous behaviors. We consider circumstantial factors that could influence
the preferred choice of one hand or the other. Most of the subjects (81%) showed a significant hand preference in food reaching
that is consistent in directionality with the hand preferences that they showed during other spontaneous behaviors. The results
show that the postural adjustment required when carrying out an action seems to influence directly the expression of manual
laterality in individuals. Moreover, the results indicate the possible existence of a relationship between maturational factors
and persistence in directionality of hand preferences. 相似文献

Infectious disease and other health hazards have been hypothesized to pose serious threats to the persistence of wild ape
populations. Respiratory disease outbreaks have been shown to be of particular concern for several wild chimpanzee study sites,
leading managers, and researchers to hypothesize that diseases originating from and/or spread by humans pose a substantial
risk to the long-term survival of chimpanzee populations. The total chimpanzee population in Gombe National Park, Tanzania,
has declined from 120–150 in the 1960s to about 100 by the end of 2007, with death associated with observable signs of disease
as the leading cause of mortality. We used a historical data set collected from 1979 to 1987 to investigate the baseline rates
of respiratory illness in chimpanzees at Gombe National Park, Tanzania, and to analyze the impact of human-related factors
(e.g., banana feeding, visits to staff quarters) and non-human-related factors (e.g., sociality, season) on chimpanzee respiratory
illness rates. We found that season and banana feeding were the most significant predictors of respiratory health clinical
signs during this time period. We discuss these results in the context of management options for the reduction of disease
risk and the importance of long-term observational data for conservation. 相似文献

Most methods of dietary reconstruction are limited in their applicability to either extant or extinct taxa. We apply and discuss a method in which dietary information can be reconstructed from chips in the tooth enamel of both living and fossil primates. Such chips can be used to indicate the presence of large hard foods in the diet, and also to provide an estimate of the bite force that was used when the chip was created. Furthermore, the equations derived from this method allow an estimate of maximum bite force to be obtained from a simple measurement of tooth size. We use this method to investigate dietary differences in nonhuman great apes ( Pongo, Gorilla, Pan). The high frequency of chips on teeth of Pongo indicate that they frequently use high forces to process hard foods such as seeds and nuts. Gorilla can generate even higher bite forces, but their low incidence of tooth chips suggests that they do so when consuming soft but tough foods. Tooth chips provide a lasting dietary signal that is not easily masked or erased, making them particularly useful for the study of rarely eaten items such as some fallback foods. 相似文献

The relationships between captive primates and their caregivers are critical ones and can affect animal welfare. Friendly relationships can improve quality of life; adversely, agonistic relationships can decrease quality of life. Caregivers in and of themselves should not be stressful to their charges, instead the caregivers' behaviors and the nature of their interactions with captive primates is likely the basis for the stress. One method to promote positive relationships in the captive environment is for caregivers to employ species‐specific behaviors in their interactions with their charges. This study tested the effect of caregivers' use of these behaviors with chimpanzees at The Zoo Northwest Florida in Gulf Breeze. The chimpanzee participants were three males. Data collection occurred during typical interactions between the human participants and the chimpanzees. Some days the caregiver presented chimpanzee behaviors and vocalizations (CB—Chimpanzee Behavior Condition) in the data collection interactions with the chimpanzees. On other days the caregiver presented human behaviors and used speech (HB—Human Behavior Condition) in the interactions with the chimpanzees. The interactions were videotaped. Data coders recorded the behavioral contexts for each chimpanzee as they occurred on the videotape and the time that each context began. Overall they engaged in significantly more friendly behaviors such as play in CB than in HB. They were significantly less interactive in HB than CB. Intermale competition was studied in a habituated group of wild chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii) in the Mahale Mountains of Tanzania. The group of 27 individuals included 3 adult males and 12 adult females. The beta-ranked
male was observed to attack the alpha male and usurp his status. The beta male was supported by an ally, the gamma male. Earlier
in the competition the gamma male had supported the alpha male. When the alpha male was displaced, he completely lost what
had been an exclusive copulatory right. It was clear that alliance with the most subordinate male was a critically effective
strategy for the major competitors. The alliance strategy of the gamma male invested him with important power. The strategy
of changing alliance is referred to as “allegiance fickleness.” It is suggested that allegiance fickleness could provide a

Costs of mating effort can affect the reproductive strategies and lifetime fitness of male primates, but interspecific and interindividual variation in the magnitude and distribution of costs is poorly understood. Male costs have primarily been recognized in seasonally breeding species that experience concentrated periods of mating competition. Here, we examine foraging costs associated with male mating effort in chimpanzees ( Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii), a polygynandrous species, in which mating opportunities occur intermittently throughout the year. To quantify male feeding, aggression, and mating, we conducted focal follows on 12 males in a wild community (Kanyawara, Kibale National Park, Uganda) for 11 mo. Males fed less on days when high-value mating opportunities (estrous parous females) were available than on days without any mating opportunities. Reductions in feeding time were related to increased rates of aggression and copulation, indicating that the proximate cause of changes in male foraging was mating effort. Surprisingly, however, there was no relationship between dominance rank and the extent to which feeding time was reduced. High costs of mating effort may reduce the degree of reproductive skew and limit the use of possessive tactics in chimpanzees. We suggest that male bonding in chimpanzees may be favored not only for its benefits but because intragroup competition is so costly. Our results complement the available data on mammals, and primates in particular, by showing that mating effort can have measurable foraging costs even in species, in which breeding is aseasonal and only moderately skewed. 相似文献

Coagulum in the semen of some primates plays different roles, depending on the species. In the present study, we examined sperm motility in the coagulum and liquid portions of semen collected from captive individuals from two great ape species: two adult Bornean orangutans (Pongo pygmaeus) (n?=?27) and three adult chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) (n?=?14). The results revealed that orangutan sperm remained motile for significantly longer in the coagulum than in the liquid portion (>?18 h). By contrast, chimpanzee sperm motility did not differ significantly over time between the two portions of the semen, although motility was slightly higher in the liquid portion than in the coagulum. The evolution of the seminal coagulum is thought to be related to postcopulatory sperm competition; however, functions of seminal coagulum have not been completely elucidated. Our data from the orangutan semen suggest that in this species, seminal coagulum may strengthen own-sperm survival. This report is the first to provide evidence for this distinctive function of the seminal coagulum. This unique property of orangutan seminal coagulum might be attributable to their reproductive traits, e.g., difficulty in predicting ovulation due to a lack of genital swelling during estrus. The orangutan is a Critically Endangered species, and captive breeding, including artificial insemination (AI), is expected. However, worldwide, only one case of orangutan AI has been successful. Our findings may contribute to an understanding of their basic semen characteristics and help improve the AI method. 相似文献
