ObjectivesTo assess sex differences in the prevalence of sarcopenia among pre-frail community-dwelling older adults in Saudi Arabia.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study conducted at a tertiary-level hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in 2019. The study participants were pre-frail community-dwelling older adults, according to the Edmonton Frail Scale. The SARC-F questionnaire was used to diagnose sarcopenia. The Katz Activities of Daily Living (ADL) was used to rank the adequacy of performance in six functions: bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, continence, and feeding, while the Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living scale was used to assess the more complex ADL necessary for living in the community.ResultsIn total, 283 community-dwelling older adults were recruited for this study, with a mean (±SD) age of 70.77 (±6.26) years; 72.7% of the total were female participants. The majority (85.5%) of the patients reported that they needed home care assistance. The mean ADL score of the participants was high, indicating high function and independence (KATZ-ADL: M 4.60 SD 1.75; Lawton Brody: 60%). The overall prevalence of sarcopenia among the studied participants was 65.7%, which was significantly higher among females (71.9%) than among males (59.1%), with a P-value of 0.007. Among the demographic characteristics of the participants, there was a significant difference in the need for home care assistance in female sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic participants (74.1% vs. 25.9%, p = 0.017), but without demonstrable difference in males. Additionally, there was a significant difference (P < 0.05) in the prevalence of sarcopenia between male and female participants according to ADL scores. The strongest predictor for sarcopenia prevalence in males was an ADL score <2 according to the Katz index, with an odds ratio of 6.5, while the need for home care was the only significant predictor of sarcopenia among female participants (OR 3.25, CI: 1.14–9.25, p = 0.02).ConclusionOverall, almost two-thirds of the studied pre-frail community-dwelling older adult population were sarcopenic. The prevalence of sarcopenia was significantly higher among females than males. The strongest predictor of sarcopenia was an ADL score <2 based on the Katz index in males and the need for home care assistance in females.  相似文献

BackgroundThe patients who require transfusion are prevalent in the Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia. Therefore, it is essential to know the frequency of blood group antigens in such a population. The Kidd blood group system (JK) has two antithetical antigens, Jka and Jkb. Antibodies to these antigens may result in delayed hemolytic transfusion reactions. The present study investigated the frequencies of Jka and Jkb and the phenotypes among Saudi blood donors living in the Jazan Province.MethodsOne hundred and forty-three samples from anonymous Saudi volunteer blood donors in the Jazan Province were serotype to detect Jka and Jkb using gel card technology and determine the phenotypes of the JK blood group system.ResultsThe prevalence of Jka and Jkb antigens were 90.64% (n = 126) and 69.40% (n = 93), respectively. The JK phenotypes were 34.96% Jk(a + b ? ) (n = 51), 12.59% Jk(a ? b + ) (n = 18), 52.45% Jk(a + b + ) (n = 75), and 0% Jk(a ? b ? ). The frequencies of the JK phenotypes in the Jazan population were significantly different from those in the Asian population (P < 0.05).ConclusionsWe reported the frequencies of the Jka and Jkb antigens and the distribution of the JK phenotypes in a group of Saudi blood donors in the Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia. The phenotype Jk(a + b + ) was the most common among the study population. Furthermore, this study emphasizes the significance of identifying the frequency of JK antigens and phenotypes in the provinces of Saudi Arabia.  相似文献

BackgroundChoice of sweetening options can influence glyceamic control among patients with diabetes. This study aims to investigate the preference of added sweeteners for Saudi patients with diabetes, factors associated with the choice of sweeteners and the attitude of the patients towards the use of artificial sweeteners.MethodsThis was a cross-sectional study conducted at King Saud University Medical City in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and targeting Saudi patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Data was collected via personal interviews accessing medical records of interviewed patients. Patients were asked about consumption of sweeteners and types of consumed soft drinks on daily basis. Bi-variate analysis of the associations between choice of sweeteners and patients characteristics was performed and followed by binary logistic regression to adjust for potential confounders such as age, gender, and education level.ResultsA total of 302 Saudi diabetic patients were recruited in this investigation. Among this sample, frequency of patients reporting weekly consumption of white sugar was the highest (57%), followed by honey (26%) and artificial sweeteners (12% for powder form and 10.5% for tablets). Consumption of white sugar was significantly more frequent among patients with higher level of Body Mass Index (BMI) (P value < 0.05). The frequency of using honey was higher among females while consumption of either sugared or low calorie soft drinks was significantly higher among male patients (P values < 0.05). Upon asking the patients about their attitude towards artificial sweeteners, only 25% of the sample agreed that their use can aid in reduction of caloric intake while 35% of the sample agreed that artificial sweeteners can be harmful to the body.ConclusionsAmong this sample of type 2 diabetes patients, the frequency of white sugar and honey use as a sweetening option is high. These findings generate the need for further research to investigate the effectiveness of health education and nutritional advice among diabetes patients attending similar clinical settings in Saudi Arabia.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has impacted the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) as it has other nations. However, length of stay (LOS), as a healthcare quality indicator, has not been examined across the healthcare regions in the KSA. Therefore, this study aimed to examine factors associated with LOS to better understand the Saudi Health System's performance in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in the newly suggested five Saudi regional business units (BUs).MethodsA retrospective study was conducted using Ministry of Health (MOH) data on hospital LOS during the period from March to mid-July 2020. Participants were adult inpatients (18 years or older) with confirmed COVID-19 (n = 1743 patients). The 13 regions of the KSA were united into the defined five regional BUs during the reorganization of the health system. Covariates included demographics such as age and sex, comorbidities, and complications of COVID-19. A multiple linear regression with stepwise forward selection was used to model LOS for other explanatory variables associated with LOS, including demographic, comorbidities, and complications.ResultsThe mean LOS was 11.85 days which differed significantly across the BUs, ranging from 9.3 days to 13.3 days (p value < 0.001). BUs differed significantly in LOS for transferred patients but not for patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) or those who died in-hospital. The multiple regression analysis revealed that the LOS for inpatients admitted in the Eastern and Southern BUs was significantly shorter than for those in the Central BU. (p value < 0.001). Admission to the ICU was associated with lengthier stays (p value < 0.0001). Factors significantly associated with shorter stays (compared to the reference), were being Saudi, death during admission, and patients referred to another hospital (p value < 0.05).ConclusionThe LOS for patients with COVID-19 differed across the proposed regional healthcare BUs, suggesting regional differences in quality of care under the reorganization of the national health system. Since patient and disease characteristics did not explain these findings, differences in staffing and other resources need to be examined to develop interventions.  相似文献

BackgroundType 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is the most common form of diabetes in the aging population. This chronic metabolic disorder has discovered many candidate genes, and KCNJ11 was one of the genes associated with insulin secretion pathways mediated by potassium channels. There have been limited studies on the rs5210 polymorphism in T2DM patients, and none of them have been conducted in Saudi Arabia.AimThe aim of this study is to investigate at genotyping levels of rs5210 polymorphism in the KCNJ11 gene in older population with T2DM in the Saudi Population.MethodsBased on the sample size design, this case-control study included 102 T2DM cases and 102 controls. Using the PCR-RFLP assay, 204 patients extracted DNA was genotyped for the rs5210 polymorphism. SPSS software was used for statistical analysis, including t-tests, HWE, genotyping, and multiple logistic regression analysis.ResultsThe t-tests performed on T2DM cases and controls revealed a significant association in age, weight, BMI, FBG, Hb1Ac, SBP, DBP, HDLC, TC, and TG parameters (p < 0.05). HWE analysis found to be in consistent with rs5210 polymorphism. Allelic association was found in the rs5210 polymorphism (OR-1.64 [95 %CI: 1.08–2.49]; p = 0.01); however, no association (p > 0.05) was observed in the multivariate logistic regression assessment performed in this study.ConclusionThese results indicate that the rs5210 polymorphism was primarily associated with allele frequencies, which could be attributable to the small sample size. Large sample size studies will be required to determine whether KCNJ11 gene polymorphisms may be required as a risk marker for T2DM in the Saudi population.  相似文献

As Aedes mosquitoes are the predominant carriers of arboviruses responsible for global dengue fever and chikungunya outbreaks, understanding their genetic diversity and population structure can enhance dengue prevention and vector control efforts. Although sympatric cryptic species have been acknowledged in Aedes species subgroups in Southeast Asia, little information is available regarding the occurrence and dispersal of cryptic Aedes species in Saudi Arabia. In the present investigation, we intend to analyze genetic variations and perform a phylogenetic study of sympatric Aedes samples collected from various locations in Taif Province, Saudi Arabia. The locus of mitochondrial DNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (COX1, analyzed with DNA barcoding) was utilized to determine genetic variance and to build phylogenetic trees. For species identification, the COX1 sequences of Aedes samples from Taif Province were compared with those of Aedes samples from GenBank (National Center for Biotechnology Information, NCBI). To identify phylogenetic relationships and genetic variability, phylogenetic trees were created using Taif Province samples, GenBank A. albopictus samples, and GenBank A. aegypti samples. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that some Taif samples (A3, A7, F2, F4, F1, A4, A1, F9 and F6) were closer to A. aegypti and A. albopictus samples from Africa and East Asia, especially Kenya and Malaysia. Whereas other samples (F9, F6, A4, F1 and A1) were closer to the GenBank A. aegypti samples KP843383 (Thailand), HM399357(Australia), MK533632 (Kenya), KX420460 (Kenya), KU495081 (Australia) and MF179160 (China) than the remaining Taif samples. Overall, our findings demonstrate that examining the genetic diversity and phylogenetic linkages of Aedes samples can aid in understanding the evolution of Aedes cryptic species in the western regions of Saudi Arabia.  相似文献

Background & ObjectivesIn late December 2019, an outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS COV-2) occurred in the city of Wuhan, the capital of the Hubei province in the central part of the People’s Republic of China (Ren et al., 2020). In Saudi Arabia, the first case of COVID-19 was reported in March 2, 2020. In March 8, 2020, the Saudi authorities adopted the lockdown strategy to contain the disease. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the various phases of the lockdown strategy in Saudi Arabia and its impact on the basic reproductive number (R0) of the COVID-19 outbreak.Material and MethodsThe timeline of the COVID-19 outbreak in Saudi Arabia was divided into three-time intervals. Google Mobility Community Reports (2020) was used to estimate the changes in community mobility during the various phases of the lockdown. The basic reproductive number (R0) of the COVID-19 outbreak was calculated daily using the Susceptible, Infected and Recovered (SIR) model based on the Saudi Ministry of Health (MOH) daily reports. This is a standard system to determine the spread of the virus on the basis of infection rate, quarantine rate as well as confirmation rate. The mean values of the calculated R0 during each interval were compared using one-way ANOVA test.ResultsThere was no statistically significant difference between the mean values of the different phases of the lockdown (P > 0.05). Moreover, mean R0 value of the second interval was 0.09 higher than the initial interval with free community mobility. Furthermore, the mean R0 values of the third interval with the full lockdown was 0.28 higher than the initial interval.ConclusionEarly implementation of lockdown strategy combined with other social distancing strategies help in containing infectious outbreaks in their early phases. Continuous assessment of such strategies’ effectiveness provides decision makers with precious information needed to justify their application when considering their economic impact.  相似文献

BackgroundThe rs7932837 polymorphism in the Hematopoietically expressed homeobox (HHEX) gene was discovered through genome-wide association studies and is a promising candidate for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), which is one of the risk factors for obesity and other complications. T2DM has been identified as a heterogeneous and multifactorial disease characterized by insulin resistance and secretion.AimThe aim of this study was to investigate the rs7932837 polymorphism in the HHEX gene in overweight patients diagnosed with T2DM in the Saudi Population.MethodsIn this case-control study, one hundred T2DM cases and 100 controls were selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Genotyping was performed with polymerase chair reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis and statistical analysis was performed between T2DM cases and controls for clinical characteristics, genotype and allele frequencies and multiple logistic regression analysis.ResultsIn this study, T2DM cases were compared with healthy control subjects. Clinical characteristic analysis revealed the statistical analysis between age, weight, BMI, FBG, HDL-c, TC, TG and family history (p < 0.05). HWE analysis was in the accordance (p < 0.05). The rs7932837 polymorphism in the recessive model showed the positive association (AA + AG vs AA: 2.22 [1.25–3.96] & p = 0.006) and none of the genotypes or alleles were in the statistical association. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed positive association with age, BMI and FBG (p < 0.05).ConclusionThis study concludes as rs7932837 polymorphism in the HHEX gene showed positive association with recessive model and future studies recommend to carry out with large number of sample size with additional polymorphisms in HHEX gene.  相似文献

BackgroundIn late 2019, cases of severe pneumonia with unidentified etiology began to emerge in Wuhan, China, before progressively spreading first nationally and then globally. The current study sought to investigate the seroprevalence of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) among blood donors in Al-Madinah, Saudi Arabia. To our knowledge, this is the first study in Saudi Arabia to screen blood donors who were not known to be previously infected with SARS-CoV-2.MethodsThis study was a cross-sectional study to assess individuals who donated blood to the central blood bank in Al-Madinah between mid-May and mid-July 2020. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was designed and established to detect antibodies directed against the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in serum samples. A total of 1,212 healthy blood donors participated in this study. The donors were males and met the requirements for blood donation during the COVID-19 pandemic period in Saudi Arabia.ResultsThe SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence among blood donors in Al-Madinah was 19.31% (n = 234/1212; 95% confidence interval: 17.12%–21.64%). No statistically significant difference was identified in seropositivity according to age. However, significant differences (p < 0.001) were identified according to ABO blood groups, with those with type A blood presenting the highest rate of seropositivity (29.18%) compared with the other blood groups (12.65% for type B, 16.36% for type AB, and 15.11% for type O).ConclusionA high prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies was detected among blood donors in Al-Madinah, which indicated a high level of exposure to the virus within the population. This further suggested that as high as one-fifth of the population may have acquired innate immunity against the virus.  相似文献

ObjectiveSome studies have shown a higher prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). The objective of this study was to assess NAFLD in PCOS women with and without OSA. A possible role of high serum androgen levels in the development of OSA in PCOS women was also investigated.MethodsBiochemical, hormonal, and polysomnography parameters were determined in 38 premenopausal PCOS patients. NAFLD was evaluated by ultrasound. Testosterone was measured by an immunoassay.ResultsSerum androgen levels and the prevalence of NAFLD (83.3% vs. 26.9%; P < .001) were higher in patients with OSA than those without OSA. The mean apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) was higher in patients with NAFLD than in those without NAFLD (16.87 events [ev]/h vs. 1.57 ev/h; P < .002). On multivariate logistic regression, where body mass index ≥ 30 kg/m2, homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance ≥ 2.7, and OSA (AHI ≥ 5 ev/h) were independent variables, only OSA was an independent predictor of NAFLD (odds ratio [OR], 7.63; P = .044). Free testosterone levels ≥ 1.07 ng/dL were also independently associated with OSA (OR, 8.18; P = .023).ConclusionIn PCOS women, the occurrence of OSA strongly predisposes them to development of NAFLD and a worse metabolic profile; hence, treatment of OSA might be beneficial for NAFLD. ObjectiveTo determine the nature of adrenal pathology in patients undergoing adrenalectomy in Saudi Arabia over the last decade and compare it with the literature. We compared perioperative outcomes between minimally invasive adrenalectomy (MIA) and open adrenalectomy (OA).MethodsThis retrospective study included patients who underwent adrenalectomy at five tertiary care centers in Saudi Arabia from 2010 to 2020. We collected patients’ baseline and perioperative characteristics and detailed hormonal evaluation of adrenal masses.ResultsAmong 160 patients (mean age 44 ± 14.5 years; mean BMI 29.17 ± 5.96 kg/m2), 84 (51.5 %) were men and 51.5 % had left-sided adrenal masses. The mean tumor size was 6.1 ± 4.2 (1.0–19.5) cm, including 60 (37.5 %) incidentalomas and 65 (40.6 %) functioning masses. Histopathology revealed 74 (46.2 %) adenomas and 24 (15 %) cancers or metastases from other primary organs; 20 %, 8.8 %, and 2.5 % of patients had pheochromocytoma, myelolipoma, and 2.5 % ganglioneuroblastoma, respectively. MIA and OA were performed in 135 (84.4 %) and 21 (15.6 %) patients, respectively. Adrenalectomy was increasingly performed over three equal periods in the last decade (17.5 % vs 34.4 % vs 48.1 %), with increasing numbers of MIAs to replace OAs. OA patients had larger tumors and needed blood transfusion more frequently (47.6 % vs 10.8 %, p< 0.001). MIA was significantly associated with shorter operative time, shorter length of stay, and less blood loss. Postoperative complications occurred in 10 (6.2 %) patients and were significantly higher for OA (24 % vs 3.0 %, p< 0.001).ConclusionsThe majority of adrenal masses are benign. Herein, the observed functional and perioperative outcomes were comparable to those of available meta-analyses.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo estimate the prevalence and clinical profile of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) among young type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients at a tertiary care diabetes center in India.MethodsElectronic medical records of T1DM patients (age at first diagnosis of T1DM ≤ 25 years) registered between January 1992 and May 2013 who had undergone ultrasonography and denied history of any alcohol intake (n = 736) were reviewed. NAFLD was diagnosed if there was any degree of fatty liver. Retinopathy was initially assessed by direct and indirect ophthalmoscopy and later by retinal photography. Nephropathy was diagnosed if urine protein excretion was > 500 mg/day, and neuropathy was diagnosed if a patient’s vibration perception threshold on biothesiometry was ≥ 20 V.ResultsA total of 204/736 (27.7%) T1DM patients had NAFLD. Compared to T1DM subjects without NAFLD those with NAFLD had higher body mass index (BMI) (18.9 ± 4.2 vs. 20.2 ± 4.7 kg/m2, P < .001), waist circumference (67.9 ± 13.2 vs. 71.9 ± 13.3 cm, P < .05), systolic blood pressure (110 ± 15 vs. 116 ± 18 mm Hg, P < .001) and diastolic blood pressure (72 ± 9 vs. 74 ± 10 mm Hg, P < .05), while fasting blood glucose (201 ± 101 vs. 183 ± 101 mg/dL, P < .05) and alkaline phosphatase (419 [12.5] vs. 315 [15.8], P < .001) levels were lower in patients with T1DM with NAFLD. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed a significant association between NAFLD and retinopathy (odds ratio [OR]: 2.01, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.13-3.43; P = .017, after adjusting for sex, duration of diabetes, overweight/obesity, hypertension, fasting plasma glucose, nephropathy, and nephropathy (OR: 1.89, 95% CI: 1.02-3.50; P = .042), after adjusting for sex and fasting plasma glucose.ConclusionsThis study suggests that NAFLD is also seen among T1DM patients and that it has an independent and significant association with retinopathy and nephropathy. BackgroundPrehypertension is a precursor to hypertension status. Psychological distress has been identified earlier among hypertensives; however, there is little evidence for the presumptive relationship between prehypertension and psychological distress.ObjectiveThe study aimed to assess the psychological wellbeing of the Al-Kharj, Saudi Arabia population, using the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and correlating it with prehypertensive patients in the same population.MethodsA cross-sectional analysis of the population of Al-Kharj, Saudi Arabia, was carried out between January and June of 2016. With an 85 percent response rate, a total of 1016 participants participated in the study. A multiple linear regression analysis was performed to assess the relationship between prehypertension and psychological distress.ResultsThe findings of the adjusted analysis demonstrated that, on average prehypertensive patients were more distressed psychologically than non-hypertensive patients (unstandardized Beta regression coefficient = 3.600; P-value 0.025). Similarly, on average women were found to be more psychologically distressed than men (unstandardized Beta = 1.511, P-value 0.002). Civil workers and unemployed individuals were more psychologically distressed than employed individuals (unstandardized Beta = 1.326, P-value 0.041) while adjusting for the sociodemographic and other variables such as BMI, diabetes status, cholesterol, and smoking status.ConclusionThe current study shows that as compared to normotensive patients, self-rated mental wellbeing and psychological wellbeing are all considerably poorer among prehypertensive patients. To prevent individuals from having negative psychological outcomes and their long-term complications, the Government of Saudi Arabia needs to concentrate on prehypertensive, female, and unemployed individuals. Well-designed longitudinal studies, primarily in Saudi Arabia, are needed in the future to research the cause and impact of poor mental health and prehypertension.  相似文献

BackgroundBlood product supply and utilization are understudied in Saudi Arabia. This study evaluates the trends in Saudi blood banks readiness, donors’ demography, and blood product utilization and wastage.Study design and methodsA retrospective, cross-sectional study of records obtained from the Ministry of Health (MOH) was initiated to report trends and statistics on annual whole blood donors and blood product utility from 2010 to 2020. Data collected in 2020 was further characterized for donors’ demographics, laboratory readiness, and staffing.ResultsThe average number of annual blood donors over the last decade (2010–2020) was 325,847.3 ± 43,160. The forecasted blood donation and dispatch trends suggest a significant increase in blood demand (R2 = 0.7582) over annual donation rates (R2 = 0.2356). In 2020, 342,460 nationwide blood donations were registered in governmental donation centers and females constituted a mere 2.5 %. Approximately 60 % of whole blood donation was voluntary, 36% was compensatory, and 4% was part of driving license renewal. The highest blood donation rate per 1,000 inhabitants was observed in Taif (69.8) and Alqonfoda (45.0). Eastern directory and Madinah had the most successful donation campaigns attracting 53% and 50% of total annual donations, respectively. Notably, Tabouk, Hai’l, and Albaha had the highest blood product wastage medians.ConclusionBlood donation rates and impetus, staffing ratios, and laboratory readiness and wastage varied among the various directories. Laboratory managers and medical directors need to increase efforts to refine current guidelines in order to comply with the transformation plan of the health sector.  相似文献

IntroductionPolycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an ovarian health condition as well as a long-term endocrine dysfunction that affects reproductive-aged women. Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) gene was linked to PCOS and chronic inflammation, and the prevalence of obesity was rising in Saudi women. Previous studies on rs5743708 polymorphism were documented in the obesity as well as in PCOS women.AimIn this study, we investigated the molecular role of rs5743708 polymorphism in TLR2 gene among Saudi women diagnosed with PCOS using the Rotterdam criteria.MethodsBlood samples were collected from 220 Saudi women in this hospital-based case-control study; 110 were PCOS women and remaining 110 were non-PCOS (control women). Biochemical analysis was performed on serum samples, and molecular analysis was performed on EDTA blood. Genotyping for rs5743708 polymorphism was performed with polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis.ResultsIn both groups, clinical data was calculated using t-test, which revealed both positive (p < 0.05) and negative (p > 0.05) associations. HWE analysis supported the rs5743708 polymorphism (p < 0.05). In the rs5743708 polymorphism, none of the genotypes, genetic models, or allele frequencies were found to be associated with PCOS and non-PCOS women. However, both ANOVA and regression analyses revealed a positive relationship in PCOS with weight and BMI (p < 0.0001).ConclusionThe rs5743708 polymorphism was not associated to PCOS in Saudi women. One of the predictions could be that 42.7% of PCOS and 73.6% of non-PCOS women were obese, and the rs5743708 polymorphism has been linked to both obesity and PCOS in the previous studies. This study suggests screening for additional polymorphisms with a large sample size.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the serum level of fat-soluble vitamins A, D and E in clinically healthy lactating female camel (Camelus dromedarius) and suckling calf > one-year-old during winter and summer seasons in five main regions of Saudi Arabia. 60 sera samples were collected and tested for vitamins A, D and E levels and the results were statistically analyzed. The statistical mean value of vitamin A was within the reported range but for D and E, there were minor variations. The effect of season was insignificant (p > 0.05) for vitamins A and E in the combined results of the dam and newborn together. This seasonal effect was highly significant in dam serum (p < 0.05). Region effect was significant for vitamin A in the northern area (p < 0.05) and for vitamin E in the southern region (p < 0.05). Correlations analysis revealed significant results in the season vs vitamin A and E p < 0.05. Mean values of vitamins A, D and E in dam and newborn did not observe significant variations however, in the season and regions there were significant variations which can be attributed to the climate difference, availability of balanced rations and camel management in each location of the five main regions of Saudi Arabia. There is a great need for further studies and the consequent development of supplementation programs and camel feed manufacturers awareness of such results is highly recommended.  相似文献

ObjectiveThe objective of this study is to investigate the expression of Vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and very late appearing antigen-4 (VLA-4) cytokines in MM (multiple Myeloma).MethodForty patients with MM are selected as the experimental group and 30 healthy persons as the control group. Flow cytometry is used to detect the expression of VCAM-1 (CD106), VLA-4 (CD49d), CD38 and CD138 antigens in experimental group and control group. ELISA (Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay) is used to detect the concentration of VCAM-1 in serum of experimental group and control group. RT-PCR is used to detect the expression of VCAM-1.ResultsThe positive rate and antigen expression rate of VACM-1 antigen in the experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P < 0.05). There were statistical differences of VLA-4 and VCAM-1 antigens between the initial diagnosis group and the relapse/refractory group, and between the relapse/refractory group and the platform stage group (P < 0.05). There were significant differences between VLA-4 antigen and VACM-1 antigen, phase I and phase II, and between phase I and phase III (P < 0.05). The concentration of VCAM-1 and the expression of VCAM-1 mRNA in the experimental group were significantly higher than (P < 0.01). In the different stages of ISS (International Staging System) and different disease groups in the experimental group, the concentration of VCAM-1 and the expression level of VCAM-1 mRNA are significantly different among the three groups of stage I, II and III (P < 0.01). There is a significant difference between the initial diagnosis group, the relapse/refractory group and the platform group (P < 0.05).ConclusionThere are abnormal expressions of adhesion molecules VCAM-1 and VLA-4 in multiple myeloma patients, which are related to ISS staging.  相似文献

ObjectiveIn this cross-sectional study, we aimed to determine the association of self-care management practices and glycemic control of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Saudi Arabia.MethodsA total of 352 type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients from two public tertiary hospitals in Saudi Arabia participated in this study. All T2DM patients were recruited and interviewed by a researcher between January to April 2018 from the outpatient diabetes clinics. All respondents answered a four-part questionnaire which includes demographics data, Diabetes Self-Management Questionnaire (DSMQ). Linear Regression was performed to assess the significance of predictors and compute the coefficient of determination.ResultsThe mean age of the participants was 51.89 ± 10.94. Of the 352 participants, 52% were obese (BMI: ≥30 kgm2) and 77% of the participants had glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) over 7%. The analysis showed that subscale of Glucose management was the strongest predictor of Hba1c levels of participants’ followed by physical activity. Gender and marital status emerged as significant predictors for their self-care management practices. Female patients had more self-care management practices than male patients (B 0.20; 95CI 0.10– 0.96 (p = 0.015).ConclusionThis study provides an evidence on the self-care management of T2DM patients in Saudi Arabia. The high self-care management found in the study highlights that the patients are aware of the severity of and possible complications associated with T2DM.  相似文献
