In cooperative breeders, sexually mature subordinates can either queue for chances to inherit the breeding position in their natal group, or disperse to reproduce independently. The choice of one or the other option may be flexible, as when individuals respond to attractive dispersal options, or they may reflect fixed life-history trajectories. Here, we show in a permanently marked, natural population of the cooperatively breeding cichlid fish Neolamprologus pulcher that subordinate helpers reduce investment in territory defence shortly before dispersing. Such reduction of effort is not shown by subordinates who stay and inherit the breeding position. This difference suggests that subordinates ready to leave reduce their investment in the natal territory strategically in favour of future life-history perspectives. It seems to be part of a conditional choice of the dispersal tactic, as this reduction in effort appears only shortly before dispersal, whereas philopatric and dispersing helpers do not differ in defence effort earlier in life. Hence, cooperative territory defence is state-dependent and plastic rather than a consistent part of a fixed life-history trajectory. 相似文献

CtIP is a tumor suppressor that interacts with Retinoblastoma protein (Rb) to regulate the G1/S-phase transition of the cell cycle. Despite its large size (897 residues) CtIP has few known structured regions. Rather it contains several linear motifs that interact with known binding partners, including an LXCXE motif that binds the pocket domain of Rb-family proteins. This LXCXE motif lies at the C-terminus of the only known structured domain, an N-terminal coiled-coil dimerization domain (DD; residues 45-160). Yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) and GST-pulldown analyses showed that CtIP requires the LXCXE motif to bind the Rb-pocket. Although isothermal titration calorimetry data indicates that the LXCXE motif is the sole determinant of binding affinity for the Rb-pocket domain (K(A) approximately 10(6)M(-1)), Y2H data indicates that the DD is required to stabilize the interaction in vivo. Thus dimerization may increase the apparent stability of the proteins and/or the lifetime of the complexes. 相似文献

Pairs of individuals frequently face situations in which they could do well if they cooperated, but each risks being exploited. The Prisoner's Dilemma is widely used for investigating such scenarios, but it is framed in terms of cooperating and defecting, whereas in reality cooperation is rarely "all or nothing". Recent models allowing for variable investment in cooperation indicated the success of a strategy of "raising-the-stakes" (RTS), which invests minimally at first and then increases its investment if its partner matches it. We tested whether this strategy was adopted by subjects participating in an experiment in which they could choose how much money to give to a partner, reciprocity being encouraged by doubling donations. Subjects did increase their donations over successive rounds, both when playing against a stooge who reciprocated with the same investment, and when playing with a partner who was free to choose their investment. Subjects showed a strong tendency to match variations in their partner's investments. Cooperation was therefore achieved through a combination of initial escalation (RTS strategy) and quantitative responsiveness ("give-as-good-as-you-get" strategy). Although initial offers were higher than predicted, our results were broadly consistent with theoretical expectations. 相似文献

Osmolytes produced under stress in animal and plant systems have been shown to increase thermal stability of the native state of a number of proteins as well as induce the formation of molten globule (MG) in acid denatured states and compact conformations in natively unfolded proteins. However, it is not clear whether these solutes stabilize native state relative to the MG state under partially denaturing conditions. Yeast hexokinase A exists as a MG state at pH 2.5 that does not show any cooperative transition upon heating. Does the presence of some of these osmolytes at pH 2.5 help in the retention of structure that is typical of native state? To answer this question, the effect of ethylene glycol (EG), glycerol, xylitol, sorbitol, trehalose and glucose at pH 2.5 on the structure and stability of yeast hexokinase A was investigated using spectroscopy and calorimetry. In presence of the above osmolytes, except EG, yeast hexokinase at pH 2.5 retains native secondary structure and hydrophobic core and unfolds with excessive heat absorption upon thermal denaturation. However, the cooperative structure binds to ANS suggesting that it is an intermediate between MG and the native state. Further, we show that at high concentration of polyols at pH 2.5, except EG, which populates a non-native ensemble, ΔHcal/ΔHvan approaches unity indicative of two-state unfolding. The results suggest that osmolytes stabilize cooperative protein structure relative to non-cooperative ensemble. These findings have implications toward the structure formation, folding and stability of proteins produced under stress in cellular systems. 相似文献

Why people punish defectors. Weak conformist transmission can stabilize costly enforcement of norms in cooperative dilemmas 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
In this paper, we present a cultural evolutionary model in which norms for cooperation and punishment are acquired via two cognitive mechanisms: (1) payoff-biased transmission-a tendency to copy the most successful individual; and (2) conformist transmission-a tendency to copy the most frequent behavior in the population. We first show that if a finite number of punishment stages is permitted (e.g. two stages of punishment occur if some individuals punish people who fail to punish non-cooperators), then an arbitrarily small amount of conformist transmission will stabilize cooperative behavior by stabilizing punishment at some n -th stage. We then explain how, once cooperation is stabilized in one group, it may spread through a multi-group population via cultural group selection. Finally, once cooperation is prevalent, we show how prosocial genes favoring cooperation and punishment may invade in the wake of cultural group selection. 相似文献

By modifying the behaviour and morphology of hosts, parasites may strongly impact host individuals, populations and communities. We examined the effects of a common trematode parasite on its snail host, Batillaria cumingi (Batillariidae). This widespread snail is usually the most abundant invertebrate in salt marshes and mudflats of the northeastern coast of Asia. More than half (52.6%, n=1360) of the snails in our study were infected. We found that snails living in the lower intertidal zone were markedly larger and exhibited different shell morphology than those in the upper intertidal zone. The large morphotypes in the lower tidal zone were all infected by the trematode, Cercaria batillariae (Heterophyidae). We used a transplant experiment, a mark-and-recapture experiment and stable carbon isotope ratios to reveal that snails infected by the trematode move to the lower intertidal zone, resume growth after maturation and consume different resources. By simultaneously changing the morphology and behaviour of individual hosts, this parasite alters the demographics and potentially modifies resource use of the snail population. Since trematodes are common and often abundant in marine and freshwater habitats throughout the world, their effects potentially alter food webs in many systems. 相似文献

Evolutionary explanations for helping in cooperative breeding systems usually require a positive effect of helping on the fitness of the breeders being assisted. However, such helper effects have proven surprisingly difficult to quantify. Cockburn et al . (this issue ) apply detailed statistical analyses to long-term field data on the enigmatic superb fairy-wren. They show that it is possible to disentangle the complex web of ecological and evolutionary interactions that confound so many studies. Whilst fairy-wren helpers may not increase nest productivity, they do increase future survival of breeding females. This study points the way for future statistical explorations of long-term data in other cooperative birds and mammals. 相似文献

Novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is the most recent health care crisis without specific prophylactic or therapeutic drugs. Antimalarial drug chloroquine (CHL) and its safer derivative hydroxychloroquine (HCHL) have been proposed to be repurposed to treat SARS coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of COVID-19. CHL/HCHL have anti-inflammatory activity and are used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and lupus. Although, CHL/HCHL have an anti-viral activity against several viruses in cell-cultures, the anti-viral activity in-vivo is questionable. Repurposing of CHL/HCHL to treat SARS-CoV-2 infection is appealing. However, there is empirical evidence from animal studies with other viruses suggesting that CHL/HCHL may have an untoward paradoxical effect. One thus cannot exclude the possibility that CHL may increase the severity of the disease and prove deleterious both for the patients and public health efforts to contain the highly contagious and explosive spread of SARS-CoV-2. 相似文献

Parasites can increase infection rates and pathogenicity in immunocompromised human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) patients. However, in vitro studies and epidemiological investigations also suggest that parasites might escape immunocompromised hosts during HIV infection.Due to the lack of direct evidence from animal experiments, the effects of parasitic infections on immunocompromised hosts remain unclear. Here,we detected 14 different parasites in six northern pig-tailed macaques(NPMs) before or at the 50 th week of simian immunodeficiency virus(SIV) infection by ELISA. The NPMs all carried parasites before viral injection. At the 50 th week after viral injection, the individuals with negative results in parasitic detection(i.e., 08247 and 08287) were characterized as the Parasites Exit(PE) group, with the other individuals(i.e., 09203, 09211, 10205, and 10225) characterized as the Parasites Remain(PR) group. Compared with the PR group, the NPMs in the PE group showed higher viral loads, lower CD4~+T cells counts, and lower CD4/CD8 rates. Additionally, the PE group had higher immune activation and immune exhaustion of both CD4~+and CD8~+T cells. Pathological observation showed greater injury to the liver, cecum, colon, spleen, and mesenteric lymph nodes in the PE group. This study showed more seriously compromised immunity in the PE group, strongly indicating that parasites might exit an immunocompromised host. 相似文献
