Halimium halimifolium (Cistaceae) is a shrub occurring on sandy substrates in the Mediterranean region and is the principal element of the sandy vegetation in Doñana National Park (S.W. Spain). The annual cycles of leaf water potential, stomatal resistance and shoot growth were studied in permanently marked H. halimifolium plants. Three sites with different water availability at the stabilized sands of the Park – Monte Blanco (MB, top of the dunes), Monte Negro (MN, depressions) and Monte Intermedio (MI, slopes of dune ridges) – were chosen. The study was carried out during a period of extreme drought. MN individuals showed the greatest growth, both in main shoot and in ramets, less negative water potential values and lower stomatal resistance values than the other two areas, because individuals' roots could reach the water table all year long. In winter there were no differences in predawn, midday and sunset water potential or in stomatal resistance values in the three areas. In summer, MI individuals showed the most negative water potentials and the highest stomatal resistance, although they occupied an intermediate position in the water table depth gradient. Under drought conditions MI individuals are the most affected, because they are acclimated to use ground water during the growth period, while MB individuals, that never reach the water table, are acclimated to use found surface water and are, thus, better adapted to water scarcity.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study aimed at clarifying how the water potential gradient (deltapsi) is maintained in the shoots of evergreen trees with expanding leaves, whose leaf water potentials at the turgor loss point (psi(tlp)) are generally high. MATERIALS: The water relations were examined in current-year expanding (CEX) and 1-year-old (OLD) leaves on the same shoots in temperate (Osaka, Japan) and tropical (Bogor, Indonesia) areas. A temperate evergreen species, Quercus glauca growing in both sites, was compared with a temperate deciduous species, Q. serrata, in Osaka, and two tropical evergreen species, Q. gemelliflora and Q. subsericea, in Bogor. KEY RESULTS: (1) In Osaka, the midday leaf water potential (psi(midday)) was slightly higher in OLD (-0.5 MPa) than in CEX leaves (-0.6 MPa), whereas psi(tlp) was significantly lower in OLD (-2.9 MPa) than in CEX leaves (-1.0 MPa). In Bogor, psi(midday) was also higher in OLD leaves (-1.0 MPa) despite the low psi(tlp) (-1.9 MPa), although stomatal conductance was not always low in OLD leaves. In the branch bearing CEX and OLD leaves, most of the hydraulic resistance (86 %) exists in the current-year branch, leading to differences in water supply between CEX and OLD leaves. The removal of buds just before breaking did not affect the high psi(midday) in OLD leaves after 1 month. Psi(midday) in OLD leaves thus appears to be independent of that in CEX leaves. CONCLUSIONS: The moderate decrease in psi(midday) in OLD leaves would contribute to maintenance of deltapsi in the shoots during leaf expansion.  相似文献

A hitherto unknown rotifer species was found in ponds of Doñana National Park (Spain) during winter 1990, 1991 and 1992. It belongs to the family Lecanidae (Monogononta), is related to Lecane ungulata and superficially resembles Lecane leontina. Two specimens of this species hatched after two days incubation of pond sediments in the laboratory.  相似文献

Changes in the vegetation of stabilized sand dunes of Doñana National Park in the last four centuries have been analysed, combining ecological and historical sources of information.Quantitative vegetation data have been obtained from 5 inventories of a 15 km long transect, consisting of 34 points where nearby woody plants have been recorded. Inventories were taken in 1636, 1647, 1652, 1682 and 1859. The analysis of these data, combined with climatic and management information on the area, reveals that until 1636 a mediterranean forest dominated byQuercus suber, existed; it was used as a game preserve. From 1636 to 1682 vegetation underwent profound changes with a marked drop in trees and mature scrub. The vegetation was replaced by a pioneer scrub species. This rapid change was brought about by the introduction of cattle and pigs, timber and cork exploitation, and the use of prescribed fire. The climatic crisis that arose circa 1700 led to erosion of the sandy soils, which made the vegetation change irreversibly. Livestock pressure hampered natural forest regeneration until 1737 whenPinus pinea plantations started. From then onwards little change in vegetation is known to have occurred. It is suggested that the main steps of change in Doñana vegetation history may have occurred in many other areas of the Mediterranean Basin.  相似文献

The zooplankton of 18 temporary ponds in the Doñana National Park (SW Spain) was studied during floods in February and May 1997. A total of 37 rotifer taxa and 34 crustaceans species were identified (17 cladocerans, 2 ostracans, 4 diaptomids, 7 cyclopodids, 1 harpacticoid, 1 anostracan, 1 notostracan and 1 conchostracan). Zooplankton samples were collected separately from the littoral and the open-water of 12 different ponds. Commonly distributed zooplankton species (frequency of appearance 50%) were not segregated to either the littoral or the open-water according to a chi-square test (P>0.005). The study ponds were divided into seasonal, intermediate and ephemeral ponds according to the length of their hydroperiod. The total numbers of both crustacean and rotifer taxa were highest in the intermediate-hydroperiod ponds (26 and 32 taxa, respectively). The total number of zooplankton taxa collected in both February and May was not significantly correlated to the hydroperiod of the temporary ponds of Doñana during the study period (r=0.165, P=0.526). 21 rotifer taxa and 20 crustacean species were found in the ephemeral ponds; the number of restricted species was also relatively high (3 rotifers and 4 crustaceans). Therefore, the ephemeral ponds held a relatively rich community during floods compared to other temporary ponds of Doñana despite their small size and short wet phase.  相似文献

Four phases are distinguished in the Mid-Holocene evolution of the southwestern Doñana National Park (SW Spain), based on the multidisciplinary study of sediments in drill cores. In the oldest phase (> 5500-5400 cal. years BP), a coastal, brackish lagoon occupied the central part of the study area, partly enclosed by the Doñana spit and limited by fluvial levees. An evolution from subtidal to intertidal conditions characterized the areas located close to the inner side of the Doñana spit during the same phase. The following phase (∼5400-5200 cal. years BP) is characterized by a high-energy event (tsunami?), which caused the breakthrough of the Doñana spit and the creation of new littoral strands in the inner areas. In the first period of the third phase (∼5200-4200 cal. years BP), estuarine infilling was probably the dominant process, with the accumulation of phyllosilicate-rich clays in the lagoon bed. This was followed by a renewed phase of instability (∼4200-4100 cal. years BP) indicated by the presence of fine storm-lain deposits and thicker, probably tsunami-induced shelly deposits. The last phase (∼4100-3700 cal. years BP) comprises: a) an infilling period, with a diminution of the marine influence; and b) two new high-energy events, which caused the erosion of the Doñana spit and the creation of new cheniers. In the last 7000 years, the comparison of these results with a revision of both geological and historical records has revealed the occurrence of twenty tsunamis (at least) during this period in Portugal and southern Spain. Evidences of these high-energy events are washover fans, bioclastic coarse-sized layers within salt marsh deposits or the presence of giant boulders and pebbles. The determination of the recurrence period is very difficult owing to the very scarce data, although our data and other authors do not discard a possible periodicity of 2000 years for a cycle of two events separated by 300-400 years.  相似文献

Competition for available water resources in both arid and semi-arid locations has led to greater scrutiny of turfgrass irrigation. Irrigation management strategies, including deficit irrigation, need further investigation. The objective of this research was to determine the physiological response of bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers.) to prolonged water deficits under saline conditions. Bermudagrass was grown in large columns packed with three different soil types (sandy loam, silt loam and clay). Synthesized saline irrigation water was applied at three different salinity levels (1.5, 3.0 and 6.0 dS/m). Two previous experiments that were conducted with these columns over a 3.5 year period led to differential profile salinization in all 27 columns. At the end of this 3.5 year period, all irrigations were terminated and plant growth and water status were monitored over a 95 day dry-down period. Midday stomatal conductance, leaf water potential, canopy temperature, soil water in storage and stolon elongation were measured over the experimental period. On day 95, above ground tissue was harvested for dry weight and elemental tissue analysis. Midday stomatal conductance decreased around day 30 in all columns regardless of soil salinity. This decrease was not associated with a threshold leaf water potential, as midday leaf water potentials remained constant over a 60 day period. Stolon elongation also ceased before any deviation in the midday leaf water potential occurred. A concomitant reduction in evapo ranspiration was not associated with the measured decrease in stomatal conductance. This would suggest that bermudagrass may have regulated stomatal activity to compensate for lower conductances during periods of greater stress and/or that measured midday stomatal conductances cannot always be directly coupled to extended time evapotranspiration measurements.  相似文献

Leaf age and salinity influence water relations of pepper leaves   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Plant growth is reduced under saline conditions even when turgor in mature leaves is maintained by osmotic adjustment. The objective of this study was to determine if young leaves from salt-affected plants were also osmotically adjusted. Pepper plants (Capsicum annuum L. cv. California Wonder) were grown in several levels of solution osmotic potential and various components of the plants' water relations were measured to determine if young, rapidly growing leaves could accumulate solutes rapidly enough to maintain turgor for normal cell enlargement. Psychrometric measurements indicated that osmotic adjustment is similar for both young and mature leaves although osmotic potential is slightly lower for young leaves. Total water potential is also lower for young leaves, particularly at dawn for the saline treatments. The result is reduced turgor under saline conditions at dawn for young but not mature leaves. This reduced turgor at dawn, and presumably low night value, is possibly a cause of reduced growth under saline conditions. No differences in leaf turgor occur at midday. Porometer measurements indicated that young leaves at a given salinity level have a higher stomatal conductance than mature leaves, regardless of the time of day. The result of stomatal closure is a linear reduction of transpiration.

Does turgor limit growth in tall trees?   总被引:16,自引:2,他引:14
The gravitational component of water potential contributes a standing 0.01 MPa m?1 to the xylem tension gradient in plants. In tall trees, this contribution can significantly reduce the water potential near the tree tops. The turgor of cells in buds and leaves is expected to decrease in direct proportion with leaf water potential along a height gradient unless osmotic adjustment occurs. The pressure–volume technique was used to characterize height‐dependent variation in leaf tissue water relations and shoot growth characteristics in young and old Douglas‐fir trees to determine the extent to which growth limitation with increasing height may be linked to the influence of the gravitational water potential gradient on leaf turgor. Values of leaf water potential (Ψl), bulk osmotic potential at full and zero turgor, and other key tissue water relations characteristics were estimated on foliage obtained at 13.5 m near the tops of young (approximately 25‐year‐old) trees and at 34.7, 44.2 and 55.6 m in the crowns of old‐growth (approximately 450‐year‐old) trees during portions of three consecutive growing seasons. The sampling periods coincided with bud swelling, expansion and maturation of new foliage. Vertical gradients of Ψl and pressure–volume analyses indicated that turgor decreased with increasing height, particularly during the late spring when vegetative buds began to swell. Vertical trends in branch elongation, leaf dimensions and leaf mass per area were consistent with increasing turgor limitation on shoot growth with increasing height. During the late spring (May), no osmotic adjustment to compensate for the gravitational gradient of Ψl was observed. By July, osmotic adjustment had occurred, but it was not sufficient to fully compensate for the vertical gradient of Ψl. In tall trees, the gravitational component of Ψl is superimposed on phenologically driven changes in leaf water relations characteristics, imposing potential constraints on turgor that may be indistinguishable from those associated with soil water deficits.  相似文献

The Dune System of Doñana National Park (SW Spain) exhibit a mosaic of environmental characteristics, with different plant communities, all under the same Mediterranean climate, creating an interesting field laboratory for the study of plant responses to stressing conditions. Fourteen woody plant populations were selected, belonging to either xerophytic or hygrophytic plant communities on stabilised dunes, where topography causes differences in soil water availability. Plants were tagged and morphological and ecophysiological measurements were recorded in winter and summer of 1999. Seasonal differences in ecophysiological measurements together with morphological variables were used as plant traits to identify the main adaptive responses of the species. Cluster analysis of traits separated three groups of plant strategies: spiny legume species; sclerophyll, and semideciduous species. In addition, another two kind of strategies have been found in the semideciduous group of species, those withstanding water shortages, attaining very negative water potentials, low photochemical efficiency, and leaf proline accumulation in summer, as opposed to those tolerating water deficit, with moderate seasonal differences in water potential, proline content and photochemical efficiency. The results of this study indicate that legume species behave as a different functional group and drought-semideciduous species present different adaptive responses under the same environmental stress. Ecophysiological measurements must be used as plant traits to detect functional groups under Mediterranean climate.  相似文献

We analysed concentrations of starch, sucrose, glucose and fructose in upper branch wood, foliage and trunk sapwood of Douglas-fir trees in height classes ranging from ~2 to ~57 m. Mean concentrations of non-structural carbohydrates (NSC) for all tissues were highest in the tallest height class and lowest in the lowest height class, and height-related trends in NSC were most pronounced in branches. Throughout a 17-month sampling period, mean values of branch NSC from the 57 m trees ranged between 30 and 377% greater than the 2 m trees. Branch NSC was inversely correlated with midday shoot water potential (Ψ(l)), shoot osmotic potential at full turgor (Ψ) and shoot extension. Temporal fluctuation in branch NSC was inversely correlated with height, and positively correlated with midday Ψ(l) , Ψ and shoot extension. The positive correlation between height and storage of NSC, and the negative correlation between NSC storage and shoot extension provide evidence that size-related growth decline in trees is not strongly associated with constraints on photosynthesis. The negative correlation between height and fluctuation in NSC suggests that mobilization of photosynthate in taller trees is constrained by some factor such as reductions in turgor-driven cell expansion or constraints on phloem transport.  相似文献

Abstract Water stress usually arrests growth of even the most deep‐rooted species during summer drought in Mediterranean‐type climates. However, scant evidence suggests that grasstrees may represent an unusual exception. We used weather data and plant water potential to investigate the relationship between leaf growth and season in the grasstree, Xanthorrhoea preissii Endl. (Xanthorrhoeaceae). Leaf production in two contrasting habitats revealed continuous annual growth, oscillating between maximum rates (2.5–3.2 leaves/d) in late‐spring to autumn, to a minimum rate of 0.5 leaf/d during winter but never stopping. While the rate of leaf production during the fast‐growth season was positively correlated with temperature above 17–18°C, leaf elongation commenced substantially earlier in the year (from 12°C). Leaf water potentials cycled annually, with predawn readings commonly measured as zero during winter–spring and as low as ?1.26 MPa during summer, but never indicating stress by exceeding the turgor loss point. Leaf death was synchronized with summer drought. The fast (summer) growth period was characterized by rapidly fluctuating leaf production, particularly in banksia woodland, where plant growth reliably responded quickly to >18 mm of rainfall. Within 24 h of 59 mm of simulated rainfall, grasstrees in banksia woodland showed a marked increase in water potential, and leaf production reached 7.5 times the controls, confirming their capacity to respond to temporary spasmodic summer rains. Rainfall was the best climatic variable for predicting woodland grasstree leaf production during summer, whereas leaf production of forest grasstrees was most closely correlated with daylength. This plastic response of grasstrees between seasonal weather extremes is relatively rare among other mediterranean floras, and has implications for a recently proposed technique for ageing grasstrees.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 We studied within-tree variation in leaf quality of the mountain birch, Betula pubescens ssp. tortuosa, for larvae of the autumnal moth, Epirrita autumnata.
  • 2 The purpose of the study was to determine the possible occurrence of systematic differences in larval growth on short shoot leaves (i.e. leaves of the same age): among leaves facing in different compass directions, between leaves of lower and upper branches, among leaves on different positions within a branch and among leaves of different sizes within a short shoot. We also measured larval growth between short shoot and long shoot leaves (i.e. between leaves of different age).
  • 3 The larvae grew best on leaves on the north side of trees and most poorly on south side leaves, the east and west sides being intermediate. Leaves from the upper branches supported larval growth better than leaves from the lower ones. The larvae grew better on the smallest leaf of each short shoot and were able to utilize it more efficiently than the two larger leaves. Short shoot leaves from the basal and middle parts of the upper branches of the trees were of better quality for the larvae than short shoot leaves from the tip part of the branches. The larval growth rate did not differ between short shoot and long shoot leaves. In general, within-tree variation in the larval growth rate was lower than variation among different trees.
  • 4 Damage to leaves can decrease leaf quality for herbivores in the same year (rapidly inducible responses) or the following year(s) (delayed inducible responses). Our results show that systematic within-tree variation in larval growth can be as great as the effects of rapidly inducible responses and that variation among individual trees can be as great as the mean effects of delayed inducible responses.

Former laboratory results indicate that shoot elongation at low light intensities of Chara aspera is absent already at 10 psu which is within the physiologically optimal salinity range for brackish water populations. To investigate if similar restrictions occur in the field, density and morphology of C. aspera were compared between three freshwater and three brackish water sites along its depth range. The lower depth limit of C. aspera varied considerably among sites (30–600 cm) related to turbidity. Light availability at the lower depth limit corresponded to about 15% of surface irradiance in freshwater and brackish water with lower salinity (3.4 psu). Total length increased and fresh weight:length ratio decreased with depth at these sites indicating shoot elongation related to lower light availability. Due to shoot elongation, light availability was far higher at the upper parts of the shoot than at the bottom in the turbid sites. Light availability at the lower depth limit was higher (about 40%) at two sites with higher salinity (7–8 psu), where no shoot elongation was observed at the lower depth limit. Instead, the plants were stunted and often covered with filamentous algae or shaded by other rooted submerged macrophytes indicating competitive disadvantages of C. aspera at higher salinities. As growth in high densities (mat formation) exposes the plants to severe self-shading, it is suggested that shoot elongation is a prerequisite to mat formation. Dense vegetation of C. aspera was found only in freshwater and brackish water with lower salinity. Single, richly branched plants occurred in clearwater sites with higher salinity. C. aspera was not found in “double stress” environments with both high turbidity and high salinity: We asume that the species is a poor competitor under these conditions. Our results indicate that morphological differences between freshwater and brackish water populations of C. aspera are at least partly explained by salinity rather than genetic differences.  相似文献

Two experiments examined simultaneous changes in leaf area (AL), root length (Lr), stomatal conductance (gs), leaf water potential (ΨL), transpiration and hydraulic plant conductance per unit leaf area (G) during the first three shoot cycles of northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) grown under favourable and controlled conditions. Each shoot cycle consisted of bud swell, stem elongation, leaf expansion and rest; roots grew almost continuously. The gs of all leaves decreased substantially while leaves of the newest flush were expanding and increased modestly when seedling leaf area remained constant. Overall, gs decreased. The ΨL of mature leaves decreased during leaf expansion and increased by an equivalent amount during intervening periods. Possible explanations for the paired changes in gs and ΨL are considered. Changes in G closely paralleled those of canopy gs. These parallel changes during polycyclic seedling growth should act to keep seedling ΨL relatively constant as plant size increases and thereby help prevent ΨL from dropping to levels that would cause runaway embolism.  相似文献

Young plants of Lotus creticus creticus growing in a hydroponic culture were submitted to 0, 70 and 140 mM NaCl treatments for 28 d and the growth and ecophysiological characteristics of these plants have been studied. The growth of Lotus plants was not affected by salinity when applied for a short period (about 15 d); however, 140 mM NaCl induced a decrease in shoot RGR at the end of the treatment. The root growth was not decreased, even it was stimulated by 140 mM NaCl. The osmotic adjustment of Lotus plants at 70 and 140 mM NaCl maintained constant pressure potential, avoiding the visual wilting. For a similar leaf water potential, cuticular transpiration of salinized plants was lower than in control plants due to the salinity effect on the cuticle. Moreover, the presence of hairy leaves (60 and 160 trichomes per mm2 in young and adult leaves, respectively) allows keeping almost 81 % of sprayed water and absorbing the 9 % of the water retained, decreased the epidermal conductance to water vapour diffusion.  相似文献

Abstract. The annual cycle of vegetative growth in the Mediterranean shrub Halimium halimifolium (Cistaceae) subjected to simulated and natural browsing on the stabilized sands of Doñana National Park (SW Spain) is described. In a drier area without herbivory (Monte Intermedio) plants were subjected to different intensities of clipping. In a more humid area with high herbivory pressure (Monte Negro) plants were isolated by cages. Plants were monitored monthly from February to November 1994. Vegetative growth starts in March and ends in June or July, according to temperature and water availability. Plants intensely clipped and plants subjected to natural browsing responded maximally regarding shoot length, and number of leaves on main shoots and branches. Clipped plants, however, did not reach the height and cover of controls.  相似文献

Shoot growth phenology was compared for the saplings of evergreen and deciduous woody species sharing the same microsite. Growth initiation occurred earlier in evergreens (among co-stratal species) while deciduous species completed their growth earlier. Shoot growth rate was significantly greater (P<0.01) for deciduous trees than evergreen trees. The amount of shoot elongations and shoot diameter was also significantly greater (P<0.01) for deciduous trees than evergreens. On the other hand, among shrubs the amount of shoot elongation and shoot diameter was greater for evergreens but the rate of elongation and diameter was more or less similar for both. The duration of shoot elongation and shoot diameter was significantly longer in evergreens than the deciduous species. Leaf packing (number of leaves per shoot) was significantly more dense in evergreen trees (P<0.01) than in deciduous tree species. Leaf packing was more dense in evergreen than deciduous shrubs but the difference was not significant. Leaf area (per individual leaf) at full expansion was significantly greater (P<0.01) in deciduous species. Leaf dry mass and specific leaf mass in the initial stage was significantly greater for evergreen species than for deciduous species. The number of buds/10 cm of shoot was higher in evergreens. However, the per cent mortality was also higher in them.  相似文献
