Two tingidsDictyla echii Schrank andD. nassata Puton are common in the mediterranean region on variousBoraginaceae and are found frequently onEchium plantagineum L. These insects can reduce or even prevent seed formation due to depigmentation and destruction of leaf and mesophyll cells. Both tingids pass through at least 2 or 3 generations per year. The range of plants exposed during specificity tests was selected on criteria established byWapshere & Kirk (1977) and included notably:
  • -Boraginaceae and plants closely related to them;
  • - plants representative of the same families on which the same or otherDictyla spp had been recorded. Since onlyBoraginaceae were attacked, this confirmed the specificity of the 2Dictyla spp. to that plant family.
  • The coexistence in Portugal of both species in the same sites, althoughD. nassata requires a warmer climate thanS. echii, suggests that there is only a small amount of direct interspecific competition. For the above reasons it appears that the 2Dictyla spp. are suitable agents for the biological control ofE. plantagineum in Australia.  相似文献

During investigations in the Middle East on biological control agents of skeleton weed (Chondrilla juncea L.), a coccid,Neomargardodes chondrillae Arch., was found to be highly damaging, its attacks on the rootstock of skeleton weed caused it to split, and reduced the viability of the plant. In N. W. Iran the coccid plays an important role in the reduction ofChondrilla populations in nature. The biology and ecology of the coccid were studied. Under field conditionsN. chondrillae was found to attackLactuca orientalis (Boiss) andCichorium intybus L., wildCompositae related toC. juncea, so that its use in biological control would pose risks to certain cultivated plants.  相似文献

Investigations carried out in Iran, to discover biological control agents for skeleton weed (Chondrilla juncea L.), showed that the buprestid,Sphenoptera clarescens Kerr, was one of the insects highly damaging to the weed. The larvae of this beetle were active throughout theChondrilla season and fed mainly on the rootstocks, causing a progressive decline in naturalChondrilla populations. The host range of the beetle was examined in the field and in the glasshouse, and it was demonstrated thatS. clarescens occurs on and attacks severalCompositae related toC. juncea. As lettuce,Lactuca sativa L., and endive,Cichorium endivia L. could have been at risk in Australia, studies were discontinued.  相似文献

It is often suggested that weeds from the same family as the crop plant may increase insect pest damages by providing shelter and additional oviposition opportunities. We compared the relative attractiveness of Brassica rapa L., B. juncea L., Sinapis alba L. and B. napus L. (Capparales: Brassicaceae) to the pollen beetle and its hymenopteran parasitoids in field conditions. Our results revealed that none of the investigated plants increased the pest abundance on B. napus plants. On the contrary, B. juncea and S. alba lured beetles away from B. napus during its damage-susceptible stage. The parasitism rate of pollen beetle larvae was the highest on B. juncea plants, indicating that cruciferous weeds could improve the natural control of the pollen beetle by providing additional hosts for parasitoids. Therefore, close relatives of oilseed rape might be used to trap pollen beetle adults, but also to support populations of natural enemies that could decrease the number of beetles.  相似文献

The phytochemical, antioxidant and mineral composition of hydroalcoholic extract of leaves of Cichorium intybus L., was determined. The leaves were found to possess comparatively higher values of total flavonoids, total phenolic acids. The phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of tannins, saponins, flavonoids, in the leaves of the plant. The leaf extract was found to show comparatively low value of IC50 for 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) inhibition. The IC50 value of chicory leaves extract was found to be 67.2 ± 2.6 μg/ml. The extracts were found to contain high amount of mineral elements especially Mg and Zn. Due to good phytochemical and antioxidant composition, C. intybus L., leaves would be an important candidate in pharmaceutical formulations and play an important role in improving the human health by participating in the antioxidant defense system against free radical generation.  相似文献

Pachycerus cordiger Germar (Curculionidae: Cleonini) is a potential agent for the biological control ofHeliotropium europaeum L. (Boraginaceae) in Australia. Adults feed on the leaves and larvae feed on the main roots of the weed within an earthen cell. These is one generation per year. Adults overwinter in the cells before emerging in late spring when they begin to feed, mate and oviposit on their host plants from late May until late July. Seven Boraginaceae and 31 economically important crop species were tested using adults and 1st instar larvae.P. cordiger was found to be specific to the Boraginaceae. Field observations strongly suggested that the weevil is restricted to summer-annualHeliotropium species. A widespread egg parasite,Caenocrepis? bothynoderi Gromakov [Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae], caused up to 18% mortality.  相似文献

Reproduction of Meloidogyne javanica on Crotalaria juncea PI 207657 and cv. Tropic Sun, Sesamum indicum, Dolichos lablab, and Elymus glaucus was assessed using a root-gall index, a reproductive index obtained by dividing the final population of juveniles (J2) in soil by the initial J2 population (Pf/Pi), and the number of J2 per gram of root recovered from roots by mist chamber extraction. Lycopersicon esculentum (cv. UC 204 C) was included as a susceptible host. The root-gall index and soil reproductive index were poor indicators of the host status of our test plants as compared with mist chamber extraction of J2 from roots. Lycopersicon esculentum had a mean root-gall index of 7.8. Some plants of S. indicum and E. glaucus had a few galls and other plants had none, with mean root-gall indices of 1.6 and 0.8, respectively. No galls were observed in C. juncea and D. lablab. Lycopersicon esculentum had the highest mean soil Pf/Pi value (mean = 1.93), while in C. juncea and some replicates of S. indicum no soil J2 were found. Even though some replicates had no galls, all replicates supported nematode reproduction. The mean numbers of J2 per gram root after 5 days of mist extraction were 447.7, 223.3, 165.5, 96.9, 42.3, and 41.9 for D. lablab, L. esculentum, E. glaucus, S. indicum, and C. juncea PI 207657 and cv. Tropic Sun, respectively. Accurate assessment of nematode resistance was influenced by sampling time and the nematode extraction technique used. Individual plants of both C. juncea and S. indicum supported nematode reproduction to some extent; however, both C. juncea and S. indicum have potential as cover crops to reduce M. javanica numbers.  相似文献

Understanding the effects of different types and quality of data on bioclimatic modeling predictions is vital to ascertaining the value of existing models, and to improving future models. Bioclimatic models were constructed using the CLIMEX program, using different data types – seasonal dynamics, geographic (overseas) distribution, and a combination of the two – for two biological control agents for the major weed Lantana camara L. in Australia. The models for one agent, Teleonemia scrupulosa Stål (Hemiptera: Tingidae) were based on a higher quality and quantity of data than the models for the other agent, Octotoma scabripennis Guérin-Méneville (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Predictions of the geographic distribution for Australia showed that T. scrupulosa models exhibited greater accuracy with a progressive improvement from seasonal dynamics data, to the model based on overseas distribution, and finally the model combining the two data types. In contrast, O. scabripennis models were of low accuracy, and showed no clear trends across the various model types. These case studies demonstrate the importance of high quality data for developing models, and of supplementing distributional data with species seasonal dynamics data wherever possible. Seasonal dynamics data allows the modeller to focus on the species response to climatic trends, while distributional data enables easier fitting of stress parameters by restricting the species envelope to the described distribution. It is apparent that CLIMEX models based on low quality seasonal dynamics data, together with a small quantity of distributional data, are of minimal value in predicting the spatial extent of species distribution.  相似文献

Dispersal of biological control agents and their subsequent population growth can be a major determinant of the success of landscape-scale weed control programs. Biocontrol agents must be able to disperse across the distances between patches of host plants in order to colonize and control their targets. The presence of three species of biocontrol agents for purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria L.): Galerucella calmariensis L. (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Galerucella pusilla Duftschmid (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), and Nanophyes marmoratus Goeze (Coleoptera: Brentidae), on relatively remote islands in the Columbia River Estuary (CRE) indicate that these organisms have the ability to disperse across large expanses of open flowing water to colonize remote sites. Previous studies suggest that colonization of these islands by active flight is highly unlikely; therefore, some other dispersal mechanism must be responsible for colonization. A spatial database of all known biocontrol agent release sites for purple loosestrife within 68 river kilometers of our CRE study area was developed and field surveys for biocontrol agents were conducted. A GIS was used to model dispersal distances between biocontrol agent recovery sites and the nearest conspecific release site. Tidal water flow within the CRE was assessed as a potential dispersal mechanism across the modeled distances. The ability of the biocontrol agents to withstand submersion was evaluated in field tests. Our results indicate that it is highly likely that passive water transport has been responsible for some of the long-distance open-water dispersal that would have been necessary for colonization of the remote islands where biocontrol agents were recovered.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo develop a receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) for diagnosing diabetes mellitus within a chronic disease management system.MethodsA case-control study including medical records from January 1, 1997, to December 31, 2005, was conducted at the Sioux Falls Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Medical records for the case group (patients with diabetes) were selected based on 1 of 3 criteria: International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification or Current Procedural Terminology codes specific for type 1 and type 2 diabetes; patients’ use of medications (oral hypoglycemic agents, antidiabetes agents, or insulin); or results from random blood or plasma glucose tests (at least 2 measurements of blood glucose ≥ 200 mg/dL). Records for the control group were selected based on patients having HbA1c measured, but not meeting the above diagnostic criteria for diabetes during the study period. Records for cases and controls were randomly frequency-matched, one-to-one. The control group was randomly divided into 5 sets of an equal number of records. Five sets of an equal number of cases were then randomly selected from the total number of cases. Each test data set included 1 case group and 1 control group, resulting in 5 independent data sets.ResultsIn total, 5040 patient records met the case definition in the diabetes registry. Records of 15 patients who were prescribed metformin only, but did not meet any other case criteria, were reviewed and excluded after determining the patients were not diabetic. The control group consisted of 5 sets of 616 records each (totaling 3080 records), and the case group consisted of 5 sets of 616 records each (totaling 3080 records). Thus, each of the 5 independent data sets of 1 case group and 1 control group contained 1232 records. The case group was predominantly composed of white men (mean age, 69 years; mean body mass index, 31 kg/m2). Demographic data were similar for control patients. The ROC curve revealed that a HbA1c 6.3% (mean + 1 SD) offered the most accurate cutoff value for diagnosing type 2 diabetes mellitus, with the following statistical values: C statistic, 0.78; sensitivity, 70%; specificity, 85%; and positive likelihood ratio, 4.6 (95% confidence interval, 4.2-5.0).ConclusionA HbA1c value ≥ 6.3% may be a useful benchmark for diagnosing diabetes mellitus within a chronic disease management system and may be a useful tool for monitoring high-risk populations. Developing a fully functional hybrid system is a must for hybrid breeding in Brassica juncea. The B. napus Ogura cms hybrid system was transferred into B. juncea by the researchers at INRA, France. The B. juncea restorer (R) line (RfoRfo) exhibited poor vigor, low fertility and was black-seeded due to linkage drag. Our studies indicated that the Rfo gene in B. juncea R line was linked to the 5 C9 markers of B. napus (sN3553F, sS2285, sN3841, sN12905 and At5g58730) and 4 radish markers (At3g27100, At5g25080, At4g13720 and At5g06240) in addition to the 6 radish markers reported before (ScH03, ScA14, OPF3, BolJon, CAB and PGIint). These markers were used to screen for improved restorer plants in the three crosses of B. juncea restorer plant O39-16 (Rforf) × condiment var. Cutlass, O39-16 (Rforf) × canola B. juncea line C668 and O39-16 (Rforf) × resynthesized B. juncea line 15043. One improved homozygous R line VR441 (RfoRfo) with only 1 C9 marker sN12905 and 2 radish markers ScH03 and BolJon was successfully developed via marker-assisted selection in the cross O39-16 × 15043. VR441 had good seed-setting (average: 14.3 seeds/pod), strong growth vigor and was yellow-seeded. Linkage mapping revealed that the Rfo gene was introgressed into chromosome 9 of the A genome in B. juncea. The development of the improved R line VR441 has made the Ogura cms hybrid system fully functional in B. juncea. We are currently using the improved system for developing high yielding hybrid varieties in condiment and canola B. juncea.  相似文献

An AFLP linkage map of Brassica juncea (L.) Czern and Coss was constructed using 88 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) from a cross between an Indian cultivar ‘Varuna’ and an accession from Poland ‘BEC-144’. The map included 91 AFLP markers organized on 19 linkage groups covering a total map distance of 1679.1 cM. A total of 14 QTLs were detected for oil content (2 QTLs), erucic acid (2 QTLs), eicosenoic acid (2 QTLs), linolenic acid (3 QTLs), linoleic acid (3 QTLs) and palmitic acid (2 QTLs). A specific genomic region on LG2 was associated with contents of three fatty acids: erucic acid, eicosenoic acid and linoleic acid. Some of the markers showed absolute linkage with the QTLs associated with the levels of linolenic acid, linoleic acid and oil content. These markers may be used for improvement of fatty acid profile of B. juncea.  相似文献

Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. is a perennial herb indigenous to Eurasia that is now present throughout temperate regions of the world where it is considered one of the worst weeds of pastoral and agricultural systems. Classical biological control has been attempted in both North America (NA) and New Zealand (NZ). However, nearly 50 years after the first agent releases there are no indications of successful control. We review the status of the five agents deliberately released for control of C. arvense in NA and NZ, plus the species unintentionally introduced, and the occurrence of insects native to NA on C. arvense. We retrospectively evaluate C. arvense as a target weed, critique the agents selected for release, and contrast the different situations in NA and NZ. In retrospect, we see justification for the agents released in NA, but it is evident that these agents would not meet the more stringent host specificity requirements necessary to be released today. The failure of the program in NA is attributed to compromised safety, and lack of impact. Non-target impacts by one of the released agents, Rhinocyllus conicus, have raised safety concerns for native thistle plants. The other released agents either failed to establish, or if established, had no impact on the weed. In contrast, the situation in NZ is quite different because there are no related native thistles (Cardueae), and thus little chance of non-target impacts. Thus far, failure in NZ is attributed to lack of effectiveness due to non-establishment, or no impact, of released agents. In the past, the same agents that were released in NA were subsequently released in NZ, without considering whether or not these were the best choices. Thus, the past failure in NZ might be due to the previous lack of a NZ-specific approach to biocontrol of thistles in general and C. arvense in particular. A new approach taking into consideration the absence of native Cardueae has resulted in the release of agents more likely to be effective, and has potentially set NZ on track towards successful biological control of C. arvense, and other thistles.  相似文献

Genetic and morphological differentiation of insect populations in relation to the use of different host plants is an important phenomenon that leads to ecological specialization. In this study, we describe variations in morphology, and in ecological and biological parameters of Lipaphis pseudobrassicae (Kaltenbach) clones associated with three host species of Cruciferae, Brassica juncea (L.) var. rai sarson Czern and Cross (brown mustard), Brassica campestris L. var. sarson Prain (yellow mustard), and Rorippa indica (L.) Hiern (wild herb). This study was aimed at obtaining evidence regarding phenotypic differentiation induced by, or associated with, the use of distinct host species. Ten morphological characters, 4 growth parameters and 8 biological functions were investigated in wingless aphids collected from plants of the three host species. Aphids from B. campestris and B. juncea clones were bigger in size, heavier in weight and showed higher growth rates and fecundity than the clones from R. indica. Between the two crop plants, clones from B. juncea showed significantly higher growth rates than the clones from B. campestris. Transfer of L. pseudobrassicae populations from B. campestris to B. juncea and R. indica and vice versa resulted in poor performance. Results indicate that the average phenotype of L. pseudobrassicae individuals inhabiting different host plant species differs as a consequence of the contrasting feeding environments the host species provide.  相似文献

The effect of increasing level of nickel (Ni) in soil was studied on biomass production, antioxidants, and Ni bioaccumulation and its translocation in castor bean (Ricinus communis) as well as Indian mustard (Brassica juncea) in similar agroclimatic conditions. The plants were exposed to 25, 50, 75, 100, and 150 mg Ni kg?1 soil for up to 60 days. It was found that R. communis produced higher biomass during the same period at all the contamination levels than B. juncea, and reduction in fresh and dry weights due to the metal contamination in soil was significantly lower in R. communis than in B. juncea. Proline and malondialdehyde in the leaves increased with increase in Ni level in both the species, whereas soluble protein content was found decreased. A correlation between the protein and MDA contents in the leaves and Ni contamination levels revealed that higher r2 values for protein and MDA were found in case of B. juncea, which indicates more toxic effects of the metal in this species. R. communis was found to have enhanced proline accumulation (higher correlation value, r2) at different Ni contamination levels. The bioaccumulation of Ni was higher in B. juncea on the basis of the per unit biomass; however, the total metal accumulation per plant was much higher in R. communis than in B. juncea during the same growing periods. The translocation of Ni from roots to shoots was higher in B. juncea at all Ni concentrations. R. communis appeared more tolerant and capable to clean more Ni from the contaminated soil in a given time and also in one crop cycle.  相似文献

Salt and pH tolerance of Rhizobia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Salt and pH tolerance ofRhizobium strains specific forSesbania cannabina Pers., sannhemp (Crotalaria juncea L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L) Merr.] have been studied. The salt effect appeared to be ion-specific. Chlorides were more toxic than sulphates of Na, K and Mg. MgSo4 has a stimulatory effect at lower than 1.0%. 0.2–0.8% NaHCO3 was lethal for all the strains.S. cannabina was most salt (3.0%) and alkali (pH 10.0) resistant. Both salt-resistant and salt-sensitive strains were present in the case of sannhemp and soybean. pH 10.0 was not inhibitory for any strain but the strains were sensitive to acidity (pH 3.5–4.0).  相似文献

Mimosa pigra L. is a serious weed of wetlands of Australia, Asia and Africa. A suite of established biocontrol agents have been introduced in Australia and some Asian countries, but better control is needed. Nesaecrepida infuscata (Schaeffer) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) is a common insect on M. pigra in tropical America. The larvae develop on the roots while the adults feed on the leaves. As both roots and leaves of M. pigra are relatively undamaged in the introduced range, this species has potential to limit the growth, survival and seed production. Furthermore, it is abundant in the dry season and so inflicts damage when most other agents are not active. In host specificity tests, larvae did not develop on any of the 65 test plant species other than M. pigra. Adult feeding on test plant species other than M. pigra was minimal. Based on these results, this insect has been released in Australia.  相似文献

We investigated the susceptibility of Mesocyclops aspericornis and Aedes aegypti larvae to mosquito larvicidal phytochemicals: piperine and eugenol and the predation efficiency of the adult female M. aspericornis on Ae. aegypti larval instar-I and late II at the sublethal concentration of piperine and eugenol. Both prey and predator were susceptible to both the phytochemicals; however, the lethal concentration of either phytochemicals recorded for Ae. aegypti did not exert mortality on the copepods. The predator’s latent time was significantly longer in the phytochemical medium than control. The encounter frequency was significantly higher in control than in the phytochemical medium. For instar-I larvae, the post-encounter attack probabilities were not affected by the tested phytochemicals. However, for instar-II, the post-encounter attack probability was lower in eugenol treatment than in either the control or piperine. The escape and post-escape survival probabilities of larvae were substantially lower in phytochemical treatments than in the control. However, the overall copepod-imposed mortality did not differ significantly between the control and the phytochemical medium. In conclusion, both the phytochemicals modify the copepod feeding behavior without affecting the copepod incurred total larval mortality. Therefore, application of these phytochemicals along with M. aspericornis for mosquito control is advisable.  相似文献

Two epimeric pairs of iridoid aglycones (1a, 1b, 2a, and 2b) were isolated from the underground parts of Lathraea squamaria L. (Orobanchaceae) in a phytochemical study. Their structures were elucidated by UV, 1D and 2D NMR, and comparison with data in the literature. This is the first report of the isolation of these compounds from the species L. squamaria and the family Orobanchaceae. The chemophenetic significance and possible reasons for the occurrence of such iridoid aglycones in holoparasitic plants are discussed.  相似文献

Long-term sulfate, selenate and molybdate accumulation and translocation were investigated in two ecotypes of Stanleya pinnata and non-hyperaccumulator Brassica juncea under different levels of applied sulfate and selenate. Morphological differences were observed between the ecotypes of S. pinnata, but few differences in selenium (Se) and sulfur (S) accumulation were measured. Se-to-S ratios were nearly identical between the ecotypes under all treatments. When compared with B. juncea, several unique trends were observed in the hyperaccumulators. While both S. pinnata ecotypes showed no significant effect on Se content of young leaves when the supplied sulfate in the growth medium was increased tenfold (from 0.5 to 5 mM), the Se levels in B. juncea decreased 4- to 12-fold with increased sulfate in the growth medium. Furthermore, S. pinnata’s S levels decreased slightly with high levels of supplied Se, suggesting competitive inhibition of uptake, while B. juncea showed higher S levels with increasing Se, possibly due to up-regulation of sulfate transporters. Both ecotypes of S. pinnata showed much larger Se concentrations in young leaves, while B. juncea showed slightly higher levels of Se in older leaves relative to young. Molybdenum (Mo) levels significantly decreased in S. pinnata with increasing sulfate and selenate in the medium; B. juncea did not show the same trends. These findings support the hypothesis that S. pinnata contains a modified sulfate transporter with a higher specificity for selenate.  相似文献
