Palaeomorphology: fossils and the inference of cladistic relationships. —Acta Zoologica (Stockholm) 91 : 72–80 Twenty years have passed since it was empirically demonstrated that inclusion of extinct taxa could overturn a phylogenetic hypothesis formulated upon extant taxa alone, challenging Colin Patterson’s bold conjecture that this phenomenon ‘may be non‐existent’. Suppositions and misconceptions about missing data, often couched in terms of ‘wildcard taxa’ and ‘the missing data problem’, continue to cloud the literature on the topic of fossils and phylogenetics. Comparisons of real data sets show that no a priori (or indeed a posteriori) decisions can be made about amounts of missing data and most properties of cladograms, and both simulated and real data sets demonstrate that even highly incomplete taxa can impact on relationships. The exclusion of fossils from phylogenetic analyses is neither theoretically nor empirically defensible.

On the Notion of Aboriginality: A Discussion

In the April 1984 Mankind we published a paper by S. J. Thiele entitled `Anti-intellectualism and the “Aboriginal Problem”: Colin Tatz and the “Self Determination” Approach‘ (Vol. 14:165–178). In December 1984 a reply from Colin Tatz appeared (Mankind 14:401–3). We asked a number of specialists in Aboriginal studies to comment on the views expressed in these two contributions: the five responses received appear in the following pages. Thiele and Tatz have added their reflections. (Ed.).     

The merits of similarity reconsidered

In addition to congruence, Colin Patterson made special similarity (topology, connectivity, ontogeny) and the absence of conjunction a condition for homology. Similarity without theory, such as at the hands of pheneticists, has been recognized as empty. Because of the threat of theoretical emptiness, the current trend in systematics is to eschew special similarity in favor of a purely operational‐algorithmic approach to character analysis. The present contribution shows that special similarity is indispensable for systematics, even in the face of seemingly severe criticism.

隆德鱼的新材料及其系统关系的初步分析——辽宁西部晚中生代地层和鱼群研究之一

依据辽宁西部三个地点的新材料和宁夏、内蒙古的标本,对罗家峡隆德鱼(Longdeichthys luojiaxiaensis Liu,1982)的形态特征作了补充描述和修订,并初步分析讨论了“薄鳞鱼类”的研究现状以及隆德鱼的系统关系。认为隆德鱼可能已是鲱头鱼派(Clupeocephala)的成员,与德国和法国基末里期的Leptolepides sprattiformis(Blainville)最为相近。
