Unconstrained system that measures physiological information as skin temperatures and heart rate per unit time of a human subject was developed. The system contained portable device included memory control unit, instrumentation unit, timer and batteries, read-out unit, test unit and verify unit. Total number of data and channels, and interval were selected by switches in the memory control unit. The data from the instrumentation unit were transferred to memory control unit and stored in the Erasable Programmable ROM (EPROM). After measurement, EPROM chip was taken off the memory control unit and put on the read-out unit which transferred the data to the microcomputer. The data were directly calculated and analyzed by microcomputer. In application of the instrumentation unit, 8-channel skin thermometer was developed and tested. After amplification, 8 analog signals were multiplexed and converted into the binary codes. The digital signals were sequentially transferred to memory control unit and stored in the EPROM under controlled signal. The accuracy of the system is determined primarily by the accuracy of the sensor of instrumentation unit. The overall accuracy of 8-channel skin thermometer is conservatively stated within 0.1 degree C. This may prove to be useful in providing an objective measurement of human subjects, and can be used in studying environmental effect for human body and sport activities in a large population setting.  相似文献

Spike-triggered averaging (STA) of muscle force transients has often been used to estimate motor unit contractile properties, using the discharge of a motor unit within the muscle as the triggering events. For motor units that exert torque about multiple degrees-of-freedom, STA has also been used to estimate motor unit pulling direction. It is well known that motor unit firing rate and weak synchronization of motor unit discharges with other motor units in the muscle can distort STA estimates of contractile properties, but the distortion of STA estimates of motor unit pulling direction has not been thoroughly evaluated. Here, we derive exact equations that predict that STA decouples firing rate and synchronization distortion when used to estimate motor unit pulling direction. We derive a framework for analyzing synchronization, consider whether the distortion due to synchronization can be removed from STA estimates of pulling direction, and show that there are distributions of motor unit pulling directions for which STA is insensitive to synchronization. We conclude that STA may give insight into how motoneuronal synchronization is organized with respect to motor unit pulling direction. Action Editor: David Terman  相似文献

We recorded from the spiking sustaining unit in the optic chiasm between lamina and medulla in the brain of the blowfly Calliphora vicina, and investigated both temporal and spatial properties of the light-adapted cell. The sustaining unit fails to follow the highest temporal frequencies followed by the photoreceptor, but its temporal resolution is substantially better than that of the on-off unit. The sustaining unit does not display the fast temporal adaptation as previously described in the on-off unit. As compared with the on-off unit, the sustaining unit has a high sensitivity to small contrasts. Although the sustaining unit continues spiking as long as the light is on, its response is also transient as it adapts rapidly after a change of intensity. The receptive field and the line spread function of the sustaining unit have a similar size and profile: a central lobe with a half-width of approximately 2° surrounded by a circular inhibitory zone located at about 3° off-axis.  相似文献

Comparisons of photosynthetic rates were made on leaves of ten species of woody dicotyledons grown in the field under full sun or under a canopy which transmitted approximately 18% of full light. Photosynthesis and dark respiration were measured and compared on various bases: area, chlorophyll, fresh weight of lamina, density thickness (fresh weight per unit area), and protein.

Light-saturated photosynthesis per unit area or unit chlorophyll was about 1.5 times greater in the sun leaves than in the shade leaves and essentially equal per unit fresh weight or unit protein. Sun leaves were thicker but the enzymes per unit fresh weight remained constant as thickness varied. Chlorophyll per unit area remained about constant; chlorophyll per unit fresh weight varied inversely with changes in leaf thickness. Thus, density thickness variation is important in photosynthetic adaptation to sun and shade. This is also shown by the relationship between light-saturated photosynthesis per unit area and density thickness.

Chondroitin sulfate (CS) containing GlcA-GalNAc(4,6-SO4) (E unit) and CS containing GlcA(2SO4)-GalNAc(6SO4) (D unit) have been implicated in various physiological functions. However, it has been poorly understood how the structure and contents of disulfated disaccharide units in CS contribute to these functions. We prepared CS libraries containing E unit or D unit in various proportions by in vitro enzymatic reactions using recombinant GalNAc 4-sulfate 6-O-sulfotransferase and uronosyl 2-O-sulfotransferase, and examined their inhibitory activity toward thrombin. The in vitro sulfated CSs containing disulfated disaccharide units showed concentration-dependent direct inhibition of thrombin when the proportion of E unit or D unit in the CSs was above 15–17%. The CSs containing both E unit and D unit exhibited higher inhibitory activity toward thrombin than the CSs containing either E unit or D unit alone, if the proportion of the total disulfated disaccharide units of these CSs was comparable. The thrombin-catalyzed degradation of fibrinogen, a physiological substrate for thrombin, was also inhibited by the CS containing both E unit and D unit. These observations indicate that the enzymatically prepared CS libraries containing various amounts of disulfated disaccharide units appear to be useful for elucidating the physiological function of disulfated disaccharide units in CS.  相似文献

Motor unit synchronization was estimated from the surface electromyograms (EMG) of the first dorsal interosseus muscle of human volunteers by a simplified surface-EMG technique (Milner-Brown et al. 1973, 1975). Single motor units were identified from intramuscular recordings and were used to obtain a spike-triggered average of the surface-EMG. The discharge rate of a reference motor unit was controlled at two levels (high and low), and the effect of motor unit activity on the surface-EMG estimate of synchronization was studied in 56 motor units. The surface-EMG estimate of motor unit synchronization was significantly higher when the reference motor unit discharged at the high rate than when it discharged at the low rate. A regression analysis indicated that the synchronization ratio calculated from the surface EMG was significantly correlated with the level of EMG activity in the muscle. Motor unit synchronization was also estimated from surface-EMG measurements that were derived by computer simulation. The simulation permitted manipulation of motor unit activity (discharge rate and recruitment) with a complete absence of synchrony among the units in the pool. The stimulated surface-EMG index was influenced by an artifact associated with signal rectification, and this effect changed non-monotonically with motor unit activity. Furthermore, the increase in the motor unit activity reduced the signal-to-noise ratio of the spike-triggered surface EMG average, and consequently decreased the sensitivity of the surface-EMG index as an estimate of motor unit synchronization. We conclude that the simplified surface-EMG method (Milner-Brown et al. 1973, 1975) does not provide a useful index of motor unit synchronization due to its inability to accurately distinguish the synchronization from methodological effects related to a rectification artifact and variation in the signal-to-noise ratio.  相似文献

Leaf-root interaction is a critical factor for plant growth during maturation and activity of roots is maintained by a sufficient supply of photosynthates. To explain photosynthate distribution among organs in field crops, the node unit hypothesis is proposed. One node unit consists of a leaf and an upper adventitous root, as well as the axillary organs and the lower adventitious root, which is adjacent to one node. Using 14C as tracer, the carbon distribution system has been clarified using spring wheat, soybean, tomato, and potato. The interrelationship among organs from the strongest to the weakest is in the following order: (1) within the node unit > (2) between the node unit in the same or adjacent phyllotaxy > (3) in the main root or apical organs, which are adjacent to the node unit. Within the node unit, 14C assimilated in the leaf on the main stem tended to distribute to axillary organs in the same node unit. The 14C assimilated in the leaf of axillary organs tended to distribute within the axillary organs, including adventitious roots in the axillary organ and then translocated to the leaf on the main leaf of the same node unit. In different organs of the node unit in the same or adjacent phyllotaxy, 14C assimilated in the leaf on the main stem was also distributed to the organs (node unit) belonging to the same phyllotaxy in dicotyledons, while in monocotyledons, the effect of phyllotaxy on 14C distribution was not clear. Among roots/apical organs and node unit, 14C assimilated in the upper node unit was distributed to apical organs and 14C assimilated in the lower node unit was distributed to roots. Thus the node unit hypothesis of photosynthate distribution among organs is very important for understanding the high productivity of field crops.  相似文献

Objective: To develop a dental unit to accommodate both patients in wheelchairs and general patients, and to evaluate the acceptability of the new chair for patients and dentists. Design: To integrate a unit for patients in wheelchairs and a unit for general patients into a single dental unit. Results: (1) The newly developed dental unit could be used for both patients in wheelchairs and general patients and could be installed in nearly the same space as occupied by a conventional dental unit. (2) The dentists could take the home position because of the height‐adjusting and tilting mechanisms. (3) The patients could be treated with a sense of assurance because of the wheelchair immobilizer and the safety devices. (4) The dentists could perform patient treatment safely. (5) As patients did not need to be transferred from their wheelchairs, assistance was unnecessary. (6) From the questionnaires, both patients and dentists rated the newly developed dental unit favourable. Conclusions: The new dental unit for patients in wheelchairs and general patients permitted dentists to perform and patients to receive dental treatment safely and in a comfortable position. Also, as a single unit could be used for treatment of both types of patients, it required no extra space. Therefore, it has the potential to be installed in the clinics of general dental practitioners to treat both groups of patients.  相似文献

Seventy-four consecutive male patients aged 38 to 63 years were admitted to a coronary care unit with their first myocardial infarction. Their attitude to the unit was studied by interview and personality tests. Only six patients found the unit anxiety-provoking. Dependency feelings were found to occur frequently, both after transfer from the unit to the general wards and after discharge from hospital. It is suggested that the weaning process from the unit should be gradual and that at least one follow-up outpatient appointment should be arranged, as well as good liaison between the family doctor and the hospital.  相似文献

Eight molecular dynamics simulations of a double crystal unit cell of ubiquitin were performed to investigate the effects of simulating at constant pressure and of simulating two unit cells compared to a single unit cell. To examine the influence of different simulation conditions, the constant-pressure and constant-volume simulations were each performed with and without counterions and using two different treatments of the long-range electrostatic interactions (lattice-sum and reaction-field methods). The constant-pressure simulations were analyzed in terms of unit cell deformation and accompanying protein deformations. Energetic and structural properties of the proteins in the simulations of the double unit cell were compared to the results of previously reported one-unit-cell simulations. Correlation between the two unit cells was also investigated based on relative translational and rotational movements of the proteins and on dipole fluctuations. The box in the constant-pressure simulations is found to deform slowly to reach convergence only after 5-10 ns. This deformation does not result from a distortion in the structure of the proteins but rather from changes in protein packing within the unit cell. The results of the double-unit-cell simulations are closely similar to the results of the single-unit-cell simulations, and little motional correlation is found between the two unit cells.  相似文献

A randomised controlled trial compared the management of elderly patients with acute stroke in a stroke unit and medical units. A significantly higher proportion of patients discharged from the stroke unit (78 of the 155 admitted) were assessed as independent compared with patients discharged from medical units (49 of the 152 admitted). The intensive use of treatment that might have been implied by creating a stroke unit did not occur, although almost all the patients admitted to the unit received occupational therapy while only 47% of the patients admitted to medical units received occupational therapy. The delay before starting treatment was significantly shorter in the stroke unit. Results of this trial show that the stroke unit improved the natural history of stroke by increasing the proportion of patients who were returned to functional independence.  相似文献

Recent work demonstrated that it is possible to identify motor unit discharge times from high-density surface EMG (HDEMG) decomposition. Since then, the number of studies that use HDEMG decomposition for motor unit investigations has increased considerably. Although HDEMG decomposition is a semi-automatic process, the analysis and interpretation of the motor unit pulse trains requires a thorough inspection of the output of the decomposition result. Here, we report guidelines to perform an accurate extraction of motor unit discharge times and interpretation of the signals. This tutorial includes a discussion of the differences between the extraction of global EMG signal features versus the identification of motor unit activity for physiological investigations followed by a comprehensive guide on how to acquire, inspect, and decompose HDEMG signals, and robust extraction of motor unit discharge characteristics.  相似文献

The lack of systematic investigations on sex-related differences in motor unit behaviour poses a challenge in understanding and optimizing health and performance in males and females. Limited investigations revealed that sex differences in motor unit behaviour might be present in human muscles. This review summarizes the current knowledge on sex differences in motor unit behaviour and potential factors that may contribute to these differences. We show significant under-representation of female participants in motor unit studies and a limited number of studies investigating sex differences in motor unit behaviour. We place the current insights within the context of methodological limitations and outline several recommendations and future directions to improve female representation in this research area. We conclude that there is an urgent need to gather more data in females and investigate sex differences in motor unit behaviour. The knowledge gained could be used to develop sex-specific approaches to improve neuromuscular performance and rehabilitation.  相似文献

We provide a definition of the unit internal (physiological) time based on metabolism. If q(t) is specific rate of metabolism, i.e. the amount of energy (oxygen) consumed by unit of active mass per physical time unit, the unit of physiological time τ(t) is defined as physical time, during which unit of active mass consumes one unit of energy: τ(t) = 1/q(t). The dimension of unit physiological time is the same as that of unit physical time and its value depends on q(t). Therefore, the unit physiological time τ(t) is a variable value, while the internal time is unequal relative to the physical time. The more internal time units τ, i.e., elementary acts of energy consumption, fit in the unit physical time t, the longer is the unit physical time for the unit active mass relative to the internal time unit, i.e., the physical time is seemingly slowed down. And, on the contrary, the less elementary acts of energy consumption take place during unit physical time, the shorter seems unit t, i.e. physical time is seemingly accelerated. Unequal course of the internal time is determined by the curve of specific metabolism q(t) during the life under specific conditions and, hence, internal time is individual. It has been questioned that the total (during lifetime) specific metabolism, often called Rubner constant, can serve as specie specific characteristic.  相似文献

The molecular diversity of the rDNA sequences (5S rDNA units) in 71 accessions from 26 taxa of Avena was evaluated. The analyses, based on 553 sequenced clones, indicated that there were 6 unit classes, named according to the haplomes (genomes) they putatively represent, namely the long A1, long B1, long M1, short C1, short D1, and short M1 unit classes. The long and short M1 unit classes were found in the tetraploid A. macrostachya, the only perennial species. The long M1 unit class was closely related to the short C1 unit class, while the short M1 unit class was closely related to the long A1 and long B1 unit classes. However, the short D1 unit class was more divergent from the other unit classes. There was only one unit class per haplome in Avena, whereas haplomes in the Triticeae often have two. Most of the sequences captured belonged to the long A1 unit class. Sequences identified as the long B1 unit class were found in the tetraploids A. abyssinica and A. vaviloviana and the diploids A. atlantica and A. longiglumis. The short C1 unit class was found in the diploid species carrying the C genome, i.e., A. clauda, A. eriantha, and A. ventricosa, and also in the diploid A. longiglumis, the tetraploids A. insularis and A. maroccana, and all the hexaploid species. The short D1 unit class was found in all the hexaploid species and two clones of A. clauda. It is noteworthy that in previous studies the B genome was found only in tetraploid species and the D genome only in hexaploid species. Unexpectedly, we found that various diploid Avena species contained the B1 and D1 units. The long B1 unit class was found in 3 accessions of the diploid A. atlantica (CN25849, CN25864, and CN25887) collected in Morocco and in 2 accessions of A. longiglumis (CIav9087 and CIav9089) collected in Algeria and Libya, respectively, whereas only 1 clone of A. clauda (CN21378) had the short D1 unit. Thus there might be a clue as to where to search for diploids carrying the B and D genomes. Avena longiglumis was found to be the most diverse species, possibly harboring the A, B, and C haplomes. The long M1 and short M1 are the unit classes typical of A. macrostachya. These results could explain the roles of A. clauda, A. longiglumis, and A. atlantica in the evolution of the genus Avena. Furthermore, one clone of the tetraploid A. murphyi was found to have sequences belonging to the short D1 unit class, which could indicate that A. murphyi might have been the progenitor of hexaploid oats and not, as postulated earlier, A. insularis. The evolution of Avena did not follow the molecular clock. The path inferred is that the C genome is more ancient than the A and B genomes and closer to the genome of A. macrostachya, the only existing perennial, which is presumed to be the most ancestral species in the genus.  相似文献

An analysis was carried out on the length, diameter and number of leaves, and the ratios between these variables for current-year growth units (sibling growth units) derived from different nodes of previous-year growth units (parent growth units) of young Nothofagus dombeyi and Nothofagus pumilio trees. Changes in sibling growth unit length, diameter, and number of leaves with position on the parent growth unit were assessed. In both species, sibling-growth unit morphology varied according to both the axis type of the parent growth unit and the position of the sibling growth unit on its parent growth unit. For the largest parent growth units, the length, diameter and number of leaves of their sibling growth units decreased from distal to proximal positions on the parent growth unit. Distal sibling growth units had a more slender stem and longer internodes than proximal sibling growth units. Sibling growth units in equivalent positions tended to have a more slender stem for N. dombeyi than for N. pumilio. Long main-branch growth units of N. pumilio had longer internodes than those of N. dombeyi; the converse was true for shorter growth units. The growth unit diameter/leaf number ratio was consistently higher for N. pumilio than for N. dombeyi. Nothofagus pumilio axes would go through a faster transition from an 'exploring' morphology to an 'exploiting' morphology than N. dombeyi axes. Within- and between-species variations in growth unit morphology should be considered when assessing the adaptive value of the branching pattern of plants.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To define the characteristics and determine the effectiveness of organised inpatient (stroke unit) care compared with conventional care in reducing death, dependency, and the requirement for long term institutional care after stroke. DESIGN: Systematic review of all randomised trials which compared organised inpatient stroke care with the contemporary conventional care. Specialist stroke unit interventions were defined as either a ward or team exclusively managing stroke (dedicated stroke unit) or a ward or team specialising in the management of disabling illnesses, which include stroke (mixed assessment/rehabilitation unit). Conventional care was usually provided in a general medical ward. SETTING: 19 trials (of which three had two treatment arms). 12 trials randomised a total of 2060 patients to a dedicated stroke unit or a general medical ward, six trials (647 patients) compared a mixed assessment/rehabilitation unit with a general medical ward, and four trials (542 patients) compared a dedicated stroke unit with a mixed assessment/rehabilitation unit. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Death, institutionalisation, and dependency. RESULTS: Organised inpatient (stroke unit) care, when compared with conventional care, was best characterised by coordinated multidisciplinary rehabilitation, programmes of education and training in stroke, and specialisation of medical and nursing staff. The stroke unit care was usually housed in a geographically discrete ward. Stroke unit care was associated with a long term (median one year follow up) reduction of death (odds ratio 0.83, 95% confidence interval 0.69 to 0.98; P < 0.05) and of the combined poor outcomes of death or dependency (0.69, 0.59 to 0.82; P < 0.0001) and death or institutionalisation (0.75, 0.65 to 0.87; P < 0.0001). Beneficial effects were independent of patients'' age, sex, or stroke severity and of variations in stroke unit organisation. Length of stay in a hospital or institution was reduced by 8% (95% confidence interval 3% to 13%) compared with conventional care but there was considerable heterogeneity of results. CONCLUSIONS: Organised stroke unit care resulted in long term reductions in death, dependency, and the need for institutional care. The observed benefits were not restricted to any particular subgroup of patients or model of stroke unit care. No systematic increase in the use of resources (in terms of length of stay) was apparent.  相似文献

The reversal of flagellar motion (switching) results from the interaction between a switch complex of the flagellar rotor and a torque-generating stationary unit, or stator (motor unit). To explain the steeply cooperative ligand-induced switching, present models propose allosteric interactions between subunits of the rotor, but do not address the possibility of a reaction that stimulates a bidirectional motor unit to reverse direction of torque. During flagellar motion, the binding of a ligand-bound switch complex at the dwell site could excite a motor unit. The probability that another switch complex of the rotor, moving according to steady-state rotation, will reach the same dwell site before that motor unit returns to ground state will be determined by the independent decay rate of the excited-state motor unit. Here, we derive an analytical expression for the energy coupling between a switch complex and a motor unit of the stator complex of a flagellum, and demonstrate that this model accounts for the cooperative switching response without the need for allosteric interactions. The analytical result can be reproduced by simulation when (1) the motion of the rotor delivers a subsequent ligand-bound switch to the excited motor unit, thereby providing the excited motor unit with a second chance to remain excited, and (2) the outputs from multiple independent motor units are constrained to a single all-or-none event. In this proposed model, a motor unit and switch complex represent the components of a mathematically defined signal transduction mechanism in which energy coupling is driven by steady-state and is regulated by stochastic ligand binding.
