Age and growth of an Iberian cyprinodont, Aphanius iberus (Cuv. & Val.), in its most northerly population, La Rubina lagoon (Alt Empordà wetlands, NE Spain), was studied. The age groups for this Mediterranean population (O +, 1 + and 2 +) agree with those reported for the Atlantic population (R. Guadalquivir marshes), in the southern limit of the species distribution in the Iberian peninsula. Differences in age structure between these populations and the one previously studied in La Tancada lagoon (R. Ebro delta marshes) can be attributed to age estimation bias. Male A. iberus data appear to fit similarly to a Gompertz growth function and to a von Bertalanffy growth function, but L x , was clearly underestimated. A Gompertz growth function was not a good fit for females, perhaps because female growth is clearly faster and less attenuated than male growth. The life history and growth pattern ofthis species is similar to that in other cyprinodontiform fishes, typified by a short longevity. The growth model of this species does not seem to fit types I and II of Sebens's classification, which are characteristic of fish. 相似文献

The mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki of Lake Banyoles, Catalonia, Spain, were strictly littoral. Their population was dominated by females throughout the year, except in spring when males were more common. Their diet was based on littoral cladocerans, particularly Chydorus sphaericus, Scapholeberis ramneri, Ceriodaphnia reticulata , and Pleuroxus laevis , and nematoceran (basically chironomid) adults. There was a large variety of prey of terrestrial (collembolans, ants) or aquatic neustonic origin ( S. ramneri , emerging nematoceran adults), showing the microhabitat of mosquitofish closely linked to the water surface. In contrast to other studies, terrestrial insects were not especially important in summer. In addition to seasonal and between-site variation, there was an ontogenetic diet shift from microcrustaceans, particularly cladocerans (smallest fish also using diatoms and copepod nauplii) to larger prey, namely nematoceran adults. However, there was an unusual, inverse relationship between fish length and the size of two prey ( S. ramneri and the collembolan Sminthurides sp.), paralleling the overall increase in mean prey size. 相似文献

Food of introduced pumpkinseed sunfish: ontogenetic diet shift and seasonal variation 总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The pumpkinseed sunfish Lepomis gibbosus introduced into Lake Banyoles (Spain) were predominantly littoral but there was a tendency of large fish to use deeper zones. Their diet was dominated by littoral macrobenthos, particularly amphipods ( Echinogammarus sp.). There was ontogenetic variation in the diet, with small young-of-the-year (LF <4 cm) feeding on several littoral microcrustaceans, especially the cladoceran Ceriodaphnia reticulata , whereas larger fish shifted to a freshwater shrimp ( Atyaephyra desmaresti ), snails and damselfly larvae. Seasonal variation in diet was linked to resource availability, with consumption of fish eggs and plant debris in spring and summer. In autumn, pumpkinseeds were partially zooplanktivores, preying on the cladoceran Daphnia longispina. The diet of pumpkinseeds in Lake Banyoles and other Iberian populations shows less molluscivory than North American populations. The potential ecological impact of this successful exotic species involves mainly predation on fish eggs and molluscs. 相似文献

Saline inland waters are globally threatened habitats harbouring many specialised endemic species, which often have restricted
geographic ranges, and occur as highly isolated populations. We studied the genetic variation and phylogeography of Ochthebius glaber Montes and Soler, a rare and endangered water beetle endemic to hypersaline streams in the South and Southeast of the Iberian
Peninsula. We used a 633 bp fragment of cytochrome oxidase subunit 1 gene to determine the genetic diversity and phylogeographic
structure within this species, and interpret this in the light of the speciesȁ9 conservation requirements. Thirteen populations
were sampled across the speciesȁ9 geographic range, and genetic diversity found to be very high, with 37 haplotypes across
the 71 specimens examined (p-distance 0.2–7.3%, average 3.1±0.4). Phylogeographic analyses revealed a surprisingly high degree of geographical structure,
detectable among populations separated by relatively short geographical distances, with three main groups of haplotypes which
have apparently been isolated for significant periods of time. Past fragmentation and contiguous range expansion events were
inferred as the main causes of the detected geographical associations of haplotypes. The establishment of independent evolutionary
lineages as conservation units is particularly important for species inhabiting saline habitats such as O. glaber, which is endangered by habitat loss across most of its distribution. However, given the natural instability of hypersaline
environments, the conservation of a network of populations and potential habitats would be necessary to enable the preservation
of the process generating and maintaining the diversity of the species. 相似文献

The white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes) is an endangered species across most of its distribution range, and information on its ecological requirements is needed
to implement effective conservation measures. Its habitat use has been studied in different areas and at various spatial scales.
However, being a nocturnal species, there is scarce information on its habitat selection during foraging periods. In this
work we analyse nocturnal habitat use of white-clawed crayfish in pools of a small stream in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula
at two different scales: (1) microhabitat selection and (2) pool characteristics. Large crayfish showed a clear positive selection
for deeper microhabitats, a selection pattern that was weaker for medium-sized crayfish and absent for small ones. On the
other hand, crayfish of all sizes avoided cobble and boulder microhabitats and positively selected fine substrate and more
exposed microhabitats. Crayfish abundance in pools was positively influenced by pool area, pool depth and the availability
of fine substrates, especially silt. While studies on white-clawed crayfish habitat use have often stressed the importance
of rough substrates as crayfish refuge, our results show that fine substrates are positively selected by foraging crayfish
of all size classes and promoted active crayfish abundance in pools. These apparently contradictory results may be due to
the differences in microhabitat preferences exhibited by active and inactive crayfish. Thus, our results help to better complete
the picture of white-clawed crayfish habitat requirements. 相似文献

Sexual dimorphism in body size and shape in animals is normally linked to sexual selection mechanisms that modify the morphological properties of each sex. However, sexual dimorphism of ecologically relevant traits may be amplified by natural selection and result in the ecological segregation of both sexes. In the present study, we investigated patterns of sexual dimorphism of morphological traits relevant for locomotion in two lacertid lizards, Podarcis bocagei and Podarcis carbonelli, aiming to identify ontogenetic sources of variation. We analysed trunk and limb variation in relation to total body size, as well as the covariation of different traits, aiming to shed light on the proximate causation of adult sexual dimorphism. We find that, although immatures are generally monomorphic, adult females have a longer trunk, and adult males have longer fore and hind limbs. Both sexes differ substantially with respect to their growth trajectories and relationships between traits, whereas, in some cases, there are signs of morphological constraints delimiting the observed patterns. Because of the direct connection between limb size/shape and locomotor performance, which is relevant both for habitat use and escape from predators, the observed patterns of sexual dimorphism are expected to translate into ecological differences between both sexes. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 99 , 530–543. 相似文献

We report the first data on the use of occasionally inundated habitats in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon by the Spanish toothcarp
(Aphanius
iberus), a cyprinodontid fish in danger of extinction. During a flooding period, we sampled the fish population and the macroinvertebrate
community in three contrasting habitats: mats of green algae, open water, and a habitat dominated by glasswort (Salicornia patula) that is occasionally inundated. The three habitats displayed strong variation in density and species composition of invertebrates
in the water column and the benthos. In general, algal mats had higher invertebrate biomasses, but glasswort had higher diversity
of organisms, in part of terrestrial origin. The density of toothcarp was very low in the open water. The habitat that is
occasionally inundated (glasswort) significantly had the highest density of mature toothcarp, while immature fish were similarly
abundant in the glasswort and algal mat habitats. Condition (weight–length relationship) and total food biomass in the gut
contents of immature toothcarp was significantly higher in algal mats than in glasswort, whereas there were no such differences
for mature fish. Therefore, the occasionally flooded habitat (glasswort) was positively selected by large mature toothcarp
but seemed a disadvantageous habitat for immature individuals.

Historically, there has been considerable disagreement between researchers about the criteria used to discriminate among species. Decisions based on traditional morphological and genetic data alone can be potentially problematic, especially if the hypotheses are contradictory. Today, taxonomy is integrating new methods from different disciplines that study species' limits and evolution; this diverse range of evidence aids researchers in the recognition of species. Differences in niche characteristics could become a new and useful criterion in helping to decide the status of conflicting taxonomical entities. Ochthebius glaber (family Hydraenidae) is an endangered water beetle typical from southeast Iberian hypersaline streams that shows three clear discrete genetic units within its distribution range. However, there is no evidence to date that these lineages of O. glaber exhibit any adaptive morphological or ecological divergence. Using a modelling approach directed to generate niche representation from distributional data, we found a significant environmental niche divergence for allopatric lineages of O. glaber that followed an aridity gradient. Although we can not conclude firmly at present that the separate populations of O. glaber studied represent separate, reproductively isolated species, the present study complements and supports previous phylogeographic analyses through the inclusion of measures of another form of evolutionary change; in this case, ecological diversification. Despite the existence of some methodological limitations, also discussed in the present study, we emphasize the importance of recent conceptual advances that allow taxonomy to improve species delimitation practices through the integration of theory and methods from disciplines that study the origin and evolution of species. © 2011 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2011, 103 , 891–903. 相似文献

The feeding habits of Zeus faber Linnaeus, 1758 were studied by examining digestive tracts in I2 size classes of individuals. It is a stenophagus species which begins life feeding almost exclusively on zooplankton until it is about 80 mm long, then switches gradually from zooplankton to small demersal fish, and finally when > 140 mm switches to feeding exclusively on benthic and demersal fish. Mysids were the most important food component in Z.faber < 141 mm and Cepola macrophthalma (Linnaeus, 1758) in Z.fiber > 140mm. The switch to fish prey was followed by a greater body weight per unit length. Z.faber > 140 mm selected primarily for small-and intermediate-sized C. macrophthalma (and to a lesser extent for Callionymus maculatus Rafinesque-Schmaltz, 1810, Gaidropsarus sp. and Trigla Iyra Linnaeus, 1758). Our results suggested that the ratio of vertical to horizontal dimension of prey, the motion and coloration of prey as well as the visual capabilities and perceptual potentialities of Z. faber may all in a synergetic fashion account for prey type and size selection and the positive relations found between the size of Z.faber and the size and variance of its ingested prey. Possible co-evolutionary relationships between Z.faber and C. macrophthalma are also discussed. 相似文献

The increasingly common phenomenon of habitat fragmentation raises the probability of pollination failure in a number of species,
as both pollen quantity and quality often decrease as populations become isolated. We experimentally investigated whether
pollen was limiting reproductive success of the endangered shrub Buxus balearica in five populations, two continental and three insular, during 2002 and 2003. Pollen limitation varied among populations
and years, but such variation was not related to density or degree of isolation. All populations showed inbreeding depression
at different phases of the reproductive cycle, although its effects differed greatly among sites. Between-population outcrossing
did not have a consistent effect on several components of fitness. The highest levels of inbreeding depression – detected
at the level of fruit and seed set- occurred at the smallest and least fecund populations from each region. This indicates
that further fragmentation of the populations of this already endangered species could certainly threaten their survival. 相似文献

In this article we describe a new species of Pseudoloris (Omomyidae, Primates) from the Robiacian (middle Eocene) locality of Sant Jaume de Frontanyà (Eastern Pyrenees, Spain). Pseudoloris pyrenaicus is characterized by its medium size, thickened paracristid, absence of a distinct paraconid, and well‐developed buccal cingulid in the lower molars, large hypoconulid in the M3, paraconule and hypocone reduced in the M1 and M2 and absent in the M3. The material from Sant Jaume de Frontanyà constitutes the most abundant sample of the genus Pseudoloris found until now in the Iberian Peninsula. Almost all the dental elements have been recovered, including those teeth hardly known for other species of the genus, such as lower and upper incisors. The new species shows intermediate features between Pseudoloris isabenae from Capella and Pseudoloris parvulus, present in different Spanish and French sites. AWOPETU, J. A., 1988. Comparison of flowering time and embryogenesis in Spanish and Portuguese populations of Lupinus albus L. (Leguminosae). Investigations were carried out on flowering-time, leaf or node number on the primary stem and embryo morphogenesis in 16 land races of Lupinus albus collected from the Iberian peninsula, using 'Kali' and 'Kievskij Mutant' as early-flowering reference cultivars. Observations showed that none of the Spanish or Portuguese introductions equalled 'Kali' and 'Kievskij Mutant' with respect to earliness in flowering and low leaf or node number, as well as shorter rate of embryo development and eventual pod maturation. However, genetic variability was established within the land races to indicate intermediate and late-flowering types that could respond to selection for eventual adaptation to central and northern Europe. 相似文献

The extraordinary growth of human populations and development in coastal areas over the last half century has eliminated and degraded coastal habitats and threatened the persistence of associated wildlife. Moreover, human‐induced sea‐level rise (SLR) is projected to further eliminate and alter the same coastal ecosystems, especially low‐lying regions. Whereas habitat loss and wildlife population declines from development are well documented, contemporary SLR has not yet been implicated in declines of coastal faunal populations. In addition, the projection of severe synergistic impacts from the combination of development and SLR is well described, yet the scientific literature offers little empirical evidence of the influence of these forces on coastal wildlife. Analysis of aerial photographs from 1959 to 2006 provided evidence of a 64% net loss of the endangered Lower Keys marsh rabbit's (Sylvilagus palustris hefneri; LKMR) habitat, the majority due to SLR (>48%). Furthermore, there was a strong negative relationship between the proportion of development per island and the amount of new habitat formed. Islands with modest development (less than 8% of land area) saw formation of new areas of marsh vegetation suitable for rabbits, whereas islands with 8% or more of their lands developed between 1959 and 2006 saw little to no addition of LKMR habitat. Only 8% of habitat loss was directly due to conversion to impervious surfaces, indicating that the greatest threats from development were indirect, including blocking of the inland migration of habitat triggered by SLR. Our results were consistent with an ongoing squeeze of coastal ecosystems between rising seas and development as a threat to LKMR habitat, which raises concern for a wide variety of coastal species. Our results provide evidence that SLR has become a contemporary conservation concern, one that is exacerbated by development, and expected to increase in magnitude as ocean waters continue to rise. 相似文献

本研究的目的是i)确定伊比利亚半岛一种大疣蛛(Macrothele calpeiana)分布的气候相关性以预测其潜在分布,ii)详细阐述该物种在伊比利亚半岛的分布假说,iii)通过推断模型预测确认该物种在北非和整个地中海地区的适合区域,iv)预测气候变暖对蜘蛛潜在分布区的影响。基于物种的存在、远离目前环境条件下的可能缺失以及其它的气候参数,使用广义线性模型发展了潜在分布的可预测模型。蜘蛛在伊比利亚半岛上的潜在分布远大于目前已知的分布区,延伸到尚未发现蜘蛛分布的葡萄牙广大地区。本文提出了该种大疣蛛在适合分布区域内没有分布的历史因素。北非具有适合该物种的条件但却没有该属物种的分布支持了大疣蛛(Macrothele)祖先的东方起源假说。对地中海地区蜘蛛分布的推断突出显示了阿根廷地区有合适的分布区,该地区也发现有另一种欧洲大疣蛛。气候变暖将对现存于伊比利亚的M.calpeiana种群产生负面影响,因为气候变暖将减少并破碎化蜘蛛在北非的潜在栖息地。目前,急需确认在葡萄牙广大地区是否存在蜘蛛物种,发展对该属的系统发育研究以确定大疣蛛属起源和扩散史的理论。 相似文献

The effects of body size and habitat variability on ammonia excretion rates (RAMs) of Aphanius iberus were analyzed in situ for the first time. At hourly intervals during a 5‐h field experiment, ammonia excretion was measured in 75 mature specimens from three sampling sites (small creek, marine salt‐mine, and salt‐marsh) established in a gradient of water salinity (0–5; 35–40; 65–70‰). Our results showed a specific size dependence pattern of RAMs in the reproduction period, which might reflect an effect of the reproductive effort. In addition, the results point to a significant decrease in mean RAM values of each population from freshwater aquatic systems (3.81 ± 0.58 μmol g−1 h−1 in fish of 2.8 ± 0.3 mm total length, TL) to salt aquatic systems with significantly higher alkalinity (2.52 ± 0.35 μmol g−1 h−1 in fish of 3.1 ± 0.5 mm TL in marine salt‐mine; 1.98 ± 0.55 μmol g−1 h−1 in fish of 3.1 ± 0.4 mm TL in salt‐marsh). Due to the size‐dependent pattern, RAM in different habitats cannot be compared directly; ancova , followed by residual compared analysis (regression‐related techniques), is seen as a valid method for this purpose. This work presents the first field data on ammonia excretion in the Aphanius genus and the flexible physiologic response characteristic of Cyprinodontids has been demonstrated. 相似文献

滨海盐沼湿地有着较高的碳沉积速率和固碳能力,在缓解全球变暖方面发挥着重要作用,而盐渍土壤是滨海盐沼湿地碳收支研究中最大的有机碳库,研究其碳沉积与埋藏对于理解滨海湿地碳收支有着重要的意义.本文从滨海盐沼湿地土壤有机碳的来源、土壤有机碳库与沉积速率、盐沼湿地有机碳的埋藏机制、全球变化与滨海盐沼湿地碳封存等几方面对滨海盐沼湿地有机碳沉积与埋藏的相关研究进行综述.今后研究应侧重:1)加强对控制滨海盐沼湿地碳储存变异的基本因素的迸一步研究;2)对测量滨海盐沼湿地沉积物碳储量和沉积碳埋藏速率的方法进行标准化;3)对潮汐影响下滨海盐沼湿地碳与邻近生态系统之间的横向交换通量进行量化;4)探明全球变暖的影响和生产力的提高是否可以抵消因呼吸增强而造成的有机碳降解速率的升高.确定固碳速率变化驱动因子,理解气候变化和人类活动对碳埋藏的影响机制,有助于提升我国滨海盐沼湿地的固碳能力. 相似文献
