The objective of the present study was to develop a sequential sampling plan for the decision-making process to control Tenuipalpus heveae Baker (Acari: Tenuipalpidae), an important pest of the rubber tree crop. The experimental area was represented by 1,000 plants of the RRIM 600 clone divided in 100 plots with 10 plants each. Leaves were collected and the number of mites determined under laboratory conditions. The sequential sampling plan was developed in accordance with the Sequential Test Likelihood Ratio. The value 0.10 was pre-established for α and β representing type I and type II errors, respectively. The level of control adopted was six mites per 12 cm2. The operating characteristic curve and the curve of maximum expected sample were determined. Two lines were generated: the upper one, when the condition for chemical control is recommended (S1?=?23.3080?+?2.1972); and the lower, when chemical control is not recommended (S0?=??23.3080?+?2.1972). Rubber pest mites, Calacarus heveae and Tenuipalpus heveae, reach economic damage levels at the end of the rainy season and the beginning of the dry season in Brazil. Therefore, low humidity adaptation might be an important characteristic for predatory mites to successfully control pest organisms. This study determined the effect of the relative humidity (RH) levels of 30–100% on the hatching of larvae of Amblyseius acalyphus, Euseius citrifolius, Iphiseiodes zuluagai, Metaseiulus camelliae, Agistemus floridanus and Zetzellia malvinae at 25 ± 0.5 °C. These predatory mites are common on rubber trees in the state of São Paulo and might be used for introduction in the major rubber tree production regions in the state of Mato Grosso. At 70% RH or higher, viability was 70% or higher for all species, indicating that their performance might be higher during the rainy season than during the dry season. Eggs of E. citrifolius and M. camelliae presented higher viability at the lower relative humidity levels than those of other species, indicating that these species might have higher chance to persist in the dry season. It is suggested that M. camelliae should be further evaluated for introduction in the state of Mato Grosso, considering that this mite is not yet present in that area.  相似文献

The suitability of rubber tree clones to Calacarus heveae was inferred from the life cycle, reproduction and survivorship of this mite. The assays were performed under controlled conditions with leaflets detached from 6-year-old plants. The development of 20 C. heveae individuals on each of the clones GT 1, PB 235 and RRIM 600 was analysed. This experiment was performed four times during periods when C. heveae was abundant in the field: (P1) November–December 2005, (P2) January–February, (P3) March–April and (P4) May–June 2006. Accordingly, the leaflets used in each assay represented the physiological condition of the host plant during each period. This approach allowed us to evaluate the seasonal suitability of rubber tree clones to C. heveae. We observed seasonal differences in the suitability of rubber tree clones to mite attack. The mites reared on the PB235 had a shorter development period, the highest egg production and highest survivorship. This evidence showed that the PB 235 was the most suitable of those tested. We also observed that the leaflets used in the assays during periods P2 and P3 were the most favourable for the development of C. heveae. This finding emphasises the seasonal suitability of rubber tree leaflets. On the other hand, GT 1 showed higher resistance against C. heveae than did RRIM 600 and PB 235, primarily during the period from November to February. This result indicated that use of the GT 1 clone to control the mite might represent an alternative for growers.  相似文献

Our aim was to investigate the population fluctuation and the damage caused by the phytophagous mites Calacarus heveae Feres, Tenuipalpus heveae Baker, and Eutetranychus banksi (McGregor) on clones FX 2784, FX 3864, and MDF 180 in rubber tree crops from southeastern Bahia, Brazil. Moreover, we tested for the influence of climatic variables on occurrence patterns of these species throughout weekly samples performed from October to April. The infestation peaks was between mid-January and late February. The clones FX 2784 and FX 3864 had the highest infestations and more severe damage possibly caused by C. heveae, which was the most frequent and abundant species in all clones. We found that sunlight duration and rainfall were the most important factors for C. heveae while T. heveae was affected by rainfall and temperature. Eutetranychus banksi was only affected by sunlight duration. However, the best models had low goodness of fit. We concluded that the clones FX 2784 and FX 3864 had a higher susceptibility to mite attack, and the association between climatic variables and favorable physiological conditions were determinant for the population increase of the species from January to April.  相似文献

Wild animals substantially support crop production by providing ecosystem services, such as pollination and natural pest control. However, the strengths of synergies between ecosystem services and their dependencies on land-use management are largely unknown. Here, we took an experimental approach to test the impact of land-use intensification on both individual and combined pollination and pest control services in coffee production systems at Mount Kilimanjaro. We established a full-factorial pollinator and vertebrate exclosure experiment along a land-use gradient from traditional homegardens (agroforestry systems), shaded coffee plantations to sun coffee plantations (total sample size = 180 coffee bushes). The exclusion of vertebrates led to a reduction in fruit set of ca 9%. Pollinators did not affect fruit set, but significantly increased fruit weight of coffee by an average of 7.4%. We found no significant decline of these ecosystem services along the land-use gradient. Pest control and pollination service were thus complementary, contributing to coffee production by affecting the quantity and quality of a major tropical cash crop across different coffee production systems at Mount Kilimanjaro.  相似文献

Oidium heveae, an obligate biotrophic pathogen of rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis), causes significant yield losses of rubber worldwide. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the interplay between O. heveae and rubber trees remain largely unknown. In this study, we isolated an O. heveae strain, named HN1106, from cultivated H. brasiliensis in Hainan, China. We found that O. heveae HN1106 triggers the hypersensitive response in a manner that depends on the effector‐triggered immunity proteins EDS1 (Enhanced Disease Susceptibility 1) and PAD4 (Phytoalexin Deficient 4) and on salicylic acid (SA) in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. However, SA‐independent resistance also appears to limit O. heveae infection of Arabidopsis, because the pathogen does not produce conidiospores on npr1 (nonexpressor of pr1), sid2 (SA induction deficient 2) and NahG plants, which show disruptions in SA signalling. Furthermore, we found that the callose synthase PMR4 (Powdery Mildew Resistant 4) prevents O. heveae HN1106 penetration into leaves in the early stages of infection. To elucidate the potential mechanism of resistance of Arabidopsis to O. heveae HN1106, we inoculated 47 different Arabidopsis accessions with the pathogen, and analysed the plant disease symptoms and O. heveae HN1106 hyphal growth and conidiospore formation on the leaves. We found that the accession Lag2‐2 showed significant susceptibility to O. heveae HN1106. Overall, this study provides a basis for future research aimed at combatting powdery mildew caused by O. heveae in rubber trees.  相似文献

Guayacán (Caesalpinia paraguariensis, Fabaceae, Caesalpinioideae), is an underexploited multipurpose tree legume of the semiarid Chaco region of southern South America. Aspects of the tree’s botany, ecology, biogeographical distribution and past and present uses are presented, and its importance as a source of forage for domestic livestock is emphasized. A typical phenogram of the tree is presented, showing that the abundant, and annually reliable, fruit crop lasts nearly year-round. Nutrition data on pods, seeds and leaves are given, as are characteristics of the wood. Merits ofC. paraguariensis are discussed in comparison with various tree legumes frequently used in dryland reforestation and agroforestry programs.  相似文献

More than 60% of the total area of tree plantations in China is in subtropical, and over 70% of subtropical plantations consist of pure stands of coniferous species. Because of the poor ecosystem services provided by pure coniferous plantations and the ecological instability of these stands, a movement is under way to promote indigenous broadleaf plantation cultivation as a promising alternative. However, little is known about the carbon (C) stocks in indigenous broadleaf plantations and their dependence on stand age. Thus, we studied above- and below-ground biomass and C stocks in a chronosequence of Mytilaria laosensis plantations in subtropical China; stands were 7, 10, 18, 23, 29 and 33 years old. Our assessments included tree, shrub, herb and litter layers. We used plot-level inventories and destructive tree sampling to determine vegetation C stocks. We also measured soil C stocks by analyses of soil profiles to 100 cm depth. C stocks in the tree layer dominated the above-ground ecosystem C pool across the chronosequence. C stocks increased with age from 7 to 29 years and plateaued thereafter due to a reduction in tree growth rates. Minor C stocks were found in the shrub and herb layers of all six plantations and their temporal fluctuations were relatively small. C stocks in the litter and soil layers increased with stand age. Total above-ground ecosystem C also increased with stand age. Most increases in C stocks in below-ground and total ecosystems were attributable to increases in soil C content and tree biomass. Therefore, considerations of C sequestration potential in indigenous broadleaf plantations must take stand age into account.  相似文献

 由于温室气体的大量排放引起的全球气候变暖等环境问题日益严重,近年来人们开始考虑通过植被和土壤的碳固存,以缓解大气中CO2浓度的升高速度,减缓温室效应的影响。有研究表明,热带原始森林的保护和人工林的建立能有效地固存大气中的碳。但是,在建立热带种植园和人工林以固存大气CO2的可行性及其碳的固存潜力大小等方面还存在较大争议。云南省西双版纳自治州是我国重要的热带地区之一,目前橡胶(Hevea brasiliensis)园的面积为1.3×105 hm2,约占该地区林地面积的14%。在本研究中,选择11块在弃耕后的农田上建立的橡胶园(定植年限为3至38年),初步探讨了橡胶园建立后植被和土壤中碳的固存规律。两个生物量模型(唐建维等的模型和Brown模型)的模拟结果显示,橡胶园建立后植被中生物量的平均增长速率分别为10.2×103和9.4×103 kg·hm-2·a-1,40和100 cm表层土壤碳的平均固存速率分别为0.61×103和0.72×103 kg C·hm-2·a-1,植被和100 cm表层土壤中碳的平均固存速率为5.82×103和5.42×103 kg C·hm-2·a-1,而定植40年后植被和100 cm表层土壤碳的固存潜力为232.8×103和216.8×103 kg C·hm-2。对两个模型的比较结果显示,唐建维等的模型生物量计算结果明显高于Brown模型,尤其是在对中幼龄橡胶园生物量估算时更是如此。  相似文献

In natural and managed systems, connections between trees are important structural resources for arboreal ant communities with ecosystem‐level effects. However, ongoing agricultural intensification in agroforestry systems, which reduces shade trees and connectivity between trees and crop plants, may hinder ant recruitment rates to resources and pest control services provided by ants. We examined whether increasing connectivity between coffee plants and shade trees in coffee plantations increases ant activity and enhances biological control of the coffee berry borer, the most devastating insect pest of coffee. Further, we examined whether artificial connections buffer against the loss of vegetation connectivity in coffee plants located at larger distances from the nesting tree. We used string to connect Inga micheliana shade trees containing Azteca sericeasur ant nests to coffee plants to compare ant activity before and after placement of the strings, and measured borer removal by ants on coffee plants with and without strings. Ant activity significantly increased after the addition of strings on connected plants, but not on control plants. Borer removal by ants was also three times higher on connected plants after string placement. Greater distance from the nesting tree negatively influenced ant activity on control coffee plants, but not on connected plants, suggesting that connections between coffee plants and nest trees could potentially compensate for the negative effects that larger distances pose on ant activity. Our study shows that favoring connectivity at the local scale, by artificially adding connections, promotes ant activity and may increase pest removal in agroecosystems. Natural forests in South‐East Asia have been extensively converted into other land‐use systems in the past decades and still show high deforestation rates. Historically, lowland forests have been converted into rubber forests, but more recently, the dominant conversion is into oil palm plantations. While it is expected that the large‐scale conversion has strong effects on the carbon cycle, detailed studies quantifying carbon pools and total net primary production (NPPtotal) in above‐ and belowground tree biomass in land‐use systems replacing rainforest (incl. oil palm plantations) are rare so far. We measured above‐ and belowground carbon pools in tree biomass together with NPPtotal in natural old‐growth forests, ‘jungle rubber’ agroforests under natural tree cover, and rubber and oil palm monocultures in Sumatra. In total, 32 stands (eight plot replicates per land‐use system) were studied in two different regions. Total tree biomass in the natural forest (mean: 384 Mg ha?1) was more than two times higher than in jungle rubber stands (147 Mg ha?1) and >four times higher than in monoculture rubber and oil palm plantations (78 and 50 Mg ha?1). NPPtotal was higher in the natural forest (24 Mg ha?1 yr?1) than in the rubber systems (20 and 15 Mg ha?1 yr?1), but was highest in the oil palm system (33 Mg ha?1 yr?1) due to very high fruit production (15–20 Mg ha?1 yr?1). NPPtotal was dominated in all systems by aboveground production, but belowground productivity was significantly higher in the natural forest and jungle rubber than in plantations. We conclude that conversion of natural lowland forest into different agricultural systems leads to a strong reduction not only in the biomass carbon pool (up to 166 Mg C ha?1) but also in carbon sequestration as carbon residence time (i.e. biomass‐C:NPP‐C) was 3–10 times higher in the natural forest than in rubber and oil palm plantations.  相似文献

Leaf-inhabiting endophytic fungi of Fraxinus excelsior growing in a floodplain forest were isolated during 2008 to investigate vertical community structure, species richness and seasonal variation. The analysis of 848 fungal endophytes from 213 leaves resulted in 50 different species. In the understorey, infection density and species richness were higher than in the crowns of mature trees throughout the whole vegetation period. Within tree crowns, sun-exposed leaves of the top canopy exhibited the lowest infection rates. Most species were rare or absent in spring and in the light crowns and frequent in autumn and the understorey. However, some species, especially the two most frequent, Alternaria infectoria and A. alternata, deviated from these patterns. Young leaves were nearly free of endophytes. Apparently, the subsequent infection and establishment of fungi strongly depend on microclimatic parameters and leaf characters, which create highly variable spatial and temporal colonisation patterns within an individual tree.  相似文献

The spread of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi from tree to crop roots was examined by molecular and microscopic methods in a glasshouse study. Growth of Calliandra calothyrsus Meissner trees inoculated with isolates of the AM fungi Glomus etunicatum Becker and Gerdemann and Gigaspora albida Schenck and Smith was monitored over an 18-month period. Three successive ‘intercrops’ of beans or maize were sown at 25, 50 and 75 cm distances from the tree and harvested during this period. At each crop harvest, the distribution of tree and crop roots and the spread of the inoculant fungi were determined using traditional microscopic methods and fungal specific primers. Both inoculants greatly improved the growth of the trees and colonization spread to the crops once the trees were 6 months old. However, benefits of inoculation to crop growth were not observed due to increased competition from the larger inoculated trees growing in a restricted soil volume. Of the two inoculant fungi, Glomus etunicatum appeared to be more mobile as it spread more rapidly, formed higher levels of colonization at increasing distances from the tree and was responsible for most of the mycorrhizal cross-contamination. In contrast, colonization of tree and crop roots by Gigaspora albida was higher nearest the tree. This work demonstrated the benefits of mycorrhizal fungus inoculation for tree growth and confirmed that trees and crops share the same AM fungi. Trees may therefore act as reservoirs of mycorrhizal fungi, either inoculant or indigenous, for surrounding crops or other annual vegetation. It was also shown that tree pruning, the normal practice in agroforestry systems, did not reduce mycorrhizal colonization or prevent spread to crops. However, the slow rates of inoculant spread found here suggest that it may take years before inoculants benefit the growth of crops sown several metres from the tree. The work also demonstrated that microscopic quantification of mycorrhizal colonization and the use of molecular probes to identify specific fungi within roots can complement each other effectively. Molecular probes were more sensitive at detecting mycorrhizal fungi than microscopic methods, but did not discriminate between full mycorrhizal structures and traces of hyphae.  相似文献

Rigidoporus microporus (Polyporales, Basidiomycota) syn. Rigidoporus lignosus is the most destructive root pathogen of rubber plantations distributed in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Our primary objective was to characterize Nigerian isolates from rubber tree and compare them with other West African, Southeast Asian and American isolates. To characterize the 20 isolates from Nigeria, we used sequence data of the nuclear ribosomal DNA ITS and LSU, β-tubulin and translation elongation factor 1-α (tef1) gene sequences. Altogether, 40 isolates of R. microporus were included in the analyses. Isolates from Africa, Asia and South/Central America formed three distinctive clades corresponding to at least three species. No phylogeographic pattern was detected among R. microporus collected from West and Central African rubber plantations suggesting continuous gene flow among these populations. Our molecular phylogenetic analysis suggests the presence of two distinctive species associated with the white rot disease. Phylogenetic analyses placed R. microporus in the Hymenochaetales in the vicinity of Oxyporus. This is the first study to characterize R. microporus isolates from Nigeria through molecular phylogenetic techniques, and also the first to compare isolates from rubber plantations in Africa and Asia.  相似文献

Two parasitoids,Cotesia kazak (Telenga) and Microplitis croceipes (Cresson) have been successfully introduced into New Zealand to improve control of Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner), tomato fruitworm. C. kazak has spread throughout the North Island, but M. croceipes is restricted largely to its release areas in crops in the Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay regions in the East Coast of the North Island and in pine plantations in the central North Island. Rates of mortality of H. armigera from parasitism were studied in processing tomato crops where these parasitoids are a key component of an integrated pest management programme, and in sweet corn, lucerne and soybeans. C. kazak was the dominant parasitoid in tomatoes and soybeans. It emerged from small H. armigera larvae and usually killed the host before it caused major damage to fruit. M. croceipes emerged from larger host larvae than C. kazak. Death rates from parasitism of H. armigera larvae in tomatoes increased from less than 1% caused by native parasitoids prior to parasitoid introductions, to 25–45% in 1988 and 70–80% in 1996 following the establishment of both introduced parasitoids. M. croceipes was the most common parasitoid in lucerne and total mortality from all parasitoids was similar to that in tomatoes. Low rates of parasitism by C. kazak in sweet corn were attributed to the reduced penetration of the adult parasitoid into sweet corn fields and to the protection afforded by sweet corn when H. armigera larvae burrowed into corn cobs. The implementation of an IPM programme based partly on the effectiveness of these parasitoids has contributed to a decrease in insecticide applications to processing tomatoes.  相似文献

Spodoptera cosmioides (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a polyphagous pest that threatens more than 24 species of crop plants including those used for biodiesel production such as Ricinus communis (castor bean), Jatropha curcas (Barbados nut), and Aleurites fordii (tung oil tree). The development and leaf consumption by S. cosmioides reared on leaves of these three species were studied under controlled laboratory conditions. The egg-to-adult development time of S. cosmioides was shortest when reared on castor bean leaves and longest when reared on tung oil tree leaves. Larvae reared on castor bean and Barbados nut leaves had seven instars, whereas those reared on tung oil tree leaves had eight. Females originating from larvae reared on castor bean and Barbados nut leaves showed greater fecundity than did females originating from larvae reared on tung oil tree leaves. Insects fed on castor bean leaves had shorter life spans than those fed on tung oil tree and Barbados nut leaves although the oviposition period did not differ significantly. The intrinsic and finite rates of increase were highest for females reared on castor bean leaves. Total leaf consumption was highest for larvae reared on tung oil tree leaves and lowest for those reared on Barbados nut leaves. We conclude that castor bean is a more appropriate host plant for the development of S. cosmioides than are Barbados nut and tung oil tree.  相似文献

Helopeltis theivora Waterhouse (Heteroptera: Miridae), is a major sucking pest of tea in North East India along with other tea growing countries. In West Bengal, tea is cultivated in three sub-Himalayan regions, Terai (foothill plains western to river Teesta), the Dooars (foothill plains eastern to river Teesta) and the Darjeeling hill slopes. Most plantations, in these regions are managed conventionally i.e. by spraying different synthetic insecticides and a few by organic farming using different herbal and microbial insecticides. In conventional plantations, continuous application of insecticides may lead to the selection of more tolerant H. theivora populations making the pest difficult to control. So, there is a pressing need to know the biochemical variability in relation to the metabolic resistance in the pest populations and develop a population specific control strategy. Activity of three principal insecticide detoxifying enzymes in H. theivora populations were studied from three tea growing regions of North Bengal. Higher levels of activity of all the studied enzymes were found from conventional tea plantations. In male H. theivora, the activity of general esterases (GEs) was 6.6–11.2 and 10.5–11.4 fold higher, cytochrome P450 (CYPs) was 2.0–3.2 and 3.0–3.2 fold higher and glutathione S-transferase (GSTs) was 5.2–8.3 and 6.4–8.7 fold higher in Terai and the Dooars populations, respectively than organic populations from Darjeeling hill slopes. Similarly, in female H. theivora, activity of GEs was 6.2–10.3 and 8.3–9.6 folds higher, CYPs was 1.9–3.2 and 3.0–3.3 fold, and GSTs was 3.5–5.4 and 4.4–6.0 fold higher in Terai and the Dooars, respectively than the organic populations from Darjeeling hill slopes. The activities of all three enzymes were found to be significantly low in organic plantations from Darjeeling hill slopes. Esterase I–VI isozymes with higher level of expression were found in specimens from conventional tea plantations than organic populations of H. theivora from Darjeeling hill slopes in isozymes study.  相似文献

The present work concerns the innocuity ofHirsutella thompsonii Fisher isolated in Cuba from a citrus rust mite,Phyllocoptruta oleivora Ashm. This phytopathogenic arachnide is an important pest of different citrus fruit plantations. The infectivity tests were performed in 220 animals (mice and guinea pigs) inoculated by intraperitoneal and subcutaneous injections. Animals showed macroscopic alterations such as nodules in the liver capsule, spleen, subcutaneous tissue; superficial fibrinous adhesions on these organs and hepatosplenomegaly. No fungi were recovered from organs at any time and only disintegrated hyphal elements were observed. The histopathological study disclosed a non-specific tissue reaction to a foreign body. The results obtained suggest the non-infectivity and innocuity ofHirsutella thompsonii Fisher in mice and guinea pigs.   相似文献
