The 6 billion people alive today consume about 25 million tonnes of protein nitrogen each year, a requirement that could well increase to 40–45 million tonnes by 2050. Most of them ultimately depend on the Haber-Bosch process to fix the atmospheric N2 needed to grow at least part of their protein and, over the earth as a whole, this dependency is likely to increase. Humans now fix some 160 million tonnes of nitrogen per year, of which 98 are fixed industrially by the Haber-Bosch process (83 for use as agricultural fertilizer, 15 for industry), 22 during combustion and the rest is fixed during the cultivation of leguminous crops and fodders. These 160 million tonnes have markedly increased the burden of combined nitrogen entering rivers, lakes and shallow seas, as well as increasing the input of NH3, N2O, NO and NO2 to the atmosphere. Nitrogen fertilizers give large economic gains in modern farming systems and under favourable conditions can be used very efficiently. Losses of nitrogen occur from all systems of agriculture, with organic manures being particularly difficult to use efficiently. Although nitrate leaching has received much attention as an economic loss, a cause of eutrophication and a health hazard, gaseous emissions may eventually prove to be the most serious environmentally. Scientists working on the use and fate of nitrogen fertilizers must be careful, clear headed and vigilant in looking for unexpected side effects.  相似文献

Production and bioavailability of dissolved organic matter (DOM) were followed during a year in the nutrient-rich estuary, Roskilde Fjord (RF), and the more oligotrophic strait, Great Belt (GB), in Denmark. Bioavailability of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrogen (DON), and phosphorous (DOP) was determined during incubations over six months. Overall, RF had three to five times larger pools of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorous (TP) and five to eight times higher concentrations of inorganic nutrients compared to GB. However, the allocation of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous into different pools were remarkably similar between the two systems. DON and DOP contributed with about equal relative fractions in the two systems: 72 ± 13% of total nitrogen and 21 ± 12% of total phosphorous. The average bioavailability of DOM was 25 ± 15, 17 ± 5.5, and 49 ± 29% for carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous, respectively. The observed release of DIN from degradation of DON amounted to between 0.1 (RF winter) and 14 times (GB summer) the loadings from land and contributed with half of the total input of bioavailable nitrogen during summer. Hence, this study shows that nitrogen in DOM is important for the nitrogen cycling, especially during summer. The sum of inorganic nutrients, particulate organic matter, and bioavailable DOM (the dynamic pools of nutrients) accounted for 42 and 92% of nitrogen, and phosphorous, respectively, and was remarkably similar between the two systems compared to the difference in nutrient richness. It is hypothesized that the pelagic metabolism of nutrients in marine systems dictates a rather uniform distribution of the different fractions of nitrogen and phosphorous containing compounds regardless of eutrophication level.  相似文献

The potential effect of sustained hypoxia (up to 70 days) on the production of N2 gas through denitrification and anammox, as well as sediment–water exchange of nitrite, nitrate and ammonia, oxygen consumption and penetration, were measured in mesocosms using sediment collected from the southern North Sea (north of Dogger Bank). As expected, both the penetration of oxygen into, and consumption of oxygen by, the sediment decreased by 42 and 46 %, respectively, once hypoxia was established. Importantly, the oxygen regime did not change significantly (P > 0.05) during the experiment, suggesting that organic carbon was not depleted. During the first 10 days, the exchange of NO3 ?, NO2 ? and NH4 + between the sediment and water was erratic but once a steady state was established the sediment acted as either a sink for fixed nitrogen under hypoxia or as a source in the controls. Over the course of the mesocosm experiment the rate of both anammox and denitrification increased, with anammox increasing disproportionately under hypoxia relative to the controls, whereas the rate of increase in denitrification was the same for both. Under sustained hypoxia the production of N2 gas increased by 72 % relative to the controls, with this increase in N2 production remaining constant regardless of the duration of hypoxia. Longer periods of stratification and oxygen depletion are predicted to occur more regularly in the bottom waters of shallow coastal seas as one manifestation of climate change. Under sustained hypoxia the potential for nitrogen removal by the production of N2 gas in this region of the southern North Sea was estimated to increase from 2.1 kt N 150 days?1 to 3.6 kt 150 days?1, while the efflux of dissolved inorganic nitrogen ceased altogether; both of which could down regulate the productivity of this region as a whole.  相似文献

Human actions have both intentionally and unintentionally altered the global economy of nitrogen (N), with both positive and negative consequences for human health and welfare, the environment and climate change. Here we examine long-term trends in reactive N (Nr) creation and efficiencies of Nr use within the continental US. We estimate that human actions in the US have increased Nr inputs by at least ~5 times compared to pre-industrial conditions. Whereas N2 fixation as a by-product of fossil fuel combustion accounted for ~1/4 of Nr inputs from the 1970s to 2000 (or ~7 Tg N year?1), this value has dropped substantially since then (to <5 Tg N year?1), owing to Clean Air Act amendments. As of 2007, national N use efficiency (NUE) of all combined N inputs was equal to ~40 %. This value increases to 55 % when considering intentional N inputs alone, with food, industrial goods, fuel and fiber production accounting for the largest Nr sinks, respectively. We estimate that 66 % of the N lost during the production of goods and services enters the air (as NO x , NH3, N2O and N2), with the remaining 34 % lost to various waterways. These Nr losses contribute to smog formation, acid rain, eutrophication, biodiversity declines and climate change. Hence we argue that an improved national NUE would: (i) benefit the US economy on the production side; (ii) reduce social damage costs; and (iii) help avoid some major climate change risks in the future.  相似文献

Croplands mainly act as net sources of the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O), as well as nitrogen oxide (NO), a precursor of troposheric ozone. We determined the carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) balance of a four-year crop rotation, including maize, wheat, barley and mustard, to provide a base for exploring mitigation options of net emissions. The crop rotation had a positive net ecosystem production (NEP) of 4.4?±?0.7 Mg C ha-1 y-1 but represented a net source of carbon with a net biome production (NBP) of -1.3?±?1.1 Mg C?ha-1 y-1. The nitrogen balance of the rotation was correlated with the carbon balance and resulted in net loss (?24?±?28 kg N ha-1 y-1). The main nitrogen losses were nitrate leaching (?11.7?±1.0 kg N ha-1 y-1) and ammonia volatilization (?9 kg N ha-1 y-1). Dry and wet depositions were 6.7?±?3.0 and 5.9?±0.1 kg N ha-1 y-1, respectively. Fluxes of nitrous (N2O) and nitric (NO) oxides did not contribute significantly to the N budget (N2O: -1.8?±?0.04; NO: -0.7?±?0.04 kg N ha-1 y-1) but N2O fluxes equaled 16% of the total greenhouse gas balance. The link between the carbon and nitrogen balances are discussed. Longer term experiments would be necessary to capture the trends in the carbon and nitrogen budgets within the variability of agricultural ecosystems.  相似文献

This paper examined the effects of simulated land cover/land use (LC/LU) change from 2000 to 2030 on nutrient loadings to the Chesapeake Bay. The SPAtially Referenced Regression On Watershed Attributes (SPARROW) model was used with anticipated watershed-wide LC/LU change from a growth forecast model that provides spatially explicit probabilities of conversion to impervious surface. The total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) loadings estimated to enter the Chesapeake Bay were reduced by 20% and 19%, respectively. In general, as development replaced other LC/LUs from 2000 to 2030, TN and TP runoff was significantly reduced by losses of non-point, non-urban source loadings, yields, and land-to-water delivery. The simulation results suggest future changes in landscape composition and configuration at catchment and riparian stream buffer width scales could lower TN and TP runoff to the estuary.  相似文献

The demand for more food is increasing fertilizer and land use, and the demand for more energy is increasing fossil fuel combustion, leading to enhanced losses of reactive nitrogen (Nr) to the environment. Many thresholds for human and ecosystem health have been exceeded owing to Nr pollution, including those for drinking water (nitrates), air quality (smog, particulate matter, ground-level ozone), freshwater eutrophication, biodiversity loss, stratospheric ozone depletion, climate change and coastal ecosystems (dead zones). Each of these environmental effects can be magnified by the ‘nitrogen cascade’: a single atom of Nr can trigger a cascade of negative environmental impacts in sequence. Here, we provide an overview of the impact of Nr on the environment and human health, including an assessment of the magnitude of different environmental problems, and the relative importance of Nr as a contributor to each problem. In some cases, Nr loss to the environment is the key driver of effects (e.g. terrestrial and coastal eutrophication, nitrous oxide emissions), whereas in some other situations nitrogen represents a key contributor exacerbating a wider problem (e.g. freshwater pollution, biodiversity loss). In this way, the central role of nitrogen can remain hidden, even though it actually underpins many trans-boundary pollution problems.  相似文献

Using mass budget and hydrological models, we quantified the contribution of major diffuse nitrogen (N) sources to surface water loading in a large heterogeneous catchment (upper Vltava river, Czech Republic, about 13,000 km2) over the last 52 years. The catchment reflects the typical development in central and eastern European countries, which witnessed socio-economic shifts from a market to a planned economy in the 1950s and back to a market economy in the 1990s. The former shift was accompanied by increasing N inputs to agricultural and forest areas with ranges for the 1950–1980s of 60–160 and 14–30 kg ha?1 year?1, respectively, and with intensive draining of waterlogged farmland. The shift in the 1990s resulted in ~40 and ~50 % reduction of N inputs to agricultural areas and forests, respectively, and farmland draining ceased. The N exports from agricultural land (E AL ) and from forests (E FO ) varied within 3–45 and 1.6–7.1 kg ha?1 year?1, respectively (with maxima in the 1980s). The E AL and E FO fluxes exhibited several similar patterns, being dominated by NO3-N, increasing with N inputs, and having similar inter-annual variability related to hydrology. The N losses from forests were stable (19 % of N input on average), while those from agricultural land increased from ~10 % in the 1960s up to 32 % in the 2000s, due probably to the previous extensive drainage and tillage of waterlogged fields and pastures. These land use changes reduced the water residence time in agricultural land and induced mineralization of soil organic matter. Continuing mineralization of soil organic N pools thus was the most probable reason for the remaining high E AL fluxes despite a ~40 % reduction in N inputs to agricultural land, while the E FO fluxes decreased proportionally to the decreasing N deposition during 1990–2010.  相似文献

Global nitrogen fixation contributes 413 Tg of reactive nitrogen (Nr) to terrestrial and marine ecosystems annually of which anthropogenic activities are responsible for half, 210 Tg N. The majority of the transformations of anthropogenic Nr are on land (240 Tg N yr−1) within soils and vegetation where reduced Nr contributes most of the input through the use of fertilizer nitrogen in agriculture. Leakages from the use of fertilizer Nr contribute to nitrate (NO3) in drainage waters from agricultural land and emissions of trace Nr compounds to the atmosphere. Emissions, mainly of ammonia (NH3) from land together with combustion related emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), contribute 100 Tg N yr−1 to the atmosphere, which are transported between countries and processed within the atmosphere, generating secondary pollutants, including ozone and other photochemical oxidants and aerosols, especially ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) and ammonium sulfate (NH4)2SO4. Leaching and riverine transport of NO3 contribute 40–70 Tg N yr−1 to coastal waters and the open ocean, which together with the 30 Tg input to oceans from atmospheric deposition combine with marine biological nitrogen fixation (140 Tg N yr−1) to double the ocean processing of Nr. Some of the marine Nr is buried in sediments, the remainder being denitrified back to the atmosphere as N2 or N2O. The marine processing is of a similar magnitude to that in terrestrial soils and vegetation, but has a larger fraction of natural origin. The lifetime of Nr in the atmosphere, with the exception of N2O, is only a few weeks, while in terrestrial ecosystems, with the exception of peatlands (where it can be 102–103 years), the lifetime is a few decades. In the ocean, the lifetime of Nr is less well known but seems to be longer than in terrestrial ecosystems and may represent an important long-term source of N2O that will respond very slowly to control measures on the sources of Nr from which it is produced.  相似文献

Dissolved total nitrogen (Nt) and total organic carbon (TOC) exports were measured from 30 catchments and regions draining 76 % of the Canadian landscape in order to estimate reactive N and organic C runoff losses to estuaries and the conditions that control them. N exports from the catchments were lower than measured in most of Europe and the United States due to significantly less agricultural activity and atmospheric deposition, especially in northern Canada. We produce statistical models using a number of geographical, climatic, agricultural, and population factors in order to predict N and C losses from the remaining regions. Using measured and extrapolated data, we estimated that the Canadian landscape exports 884 and 18,210 ktons of Nt and OC per year. Area normalized exports ranged from 29.4 kg km?2 for the northern Mackenzie River to 299 kg km?2 for the semi-agricultural Saint John. Area normalized OC exports ranged from 495 kg km?2 in the high Arctic to 7,295 to the wetland dominated Broadback River in northern Quebec. N exports were best predicted by the latitude of the catchment centroid, mean slope, population density, runoff and % of the catchment as agricultural land. The best model for predicting TOC exports needed only slope and runoff. The Nt/OC ratio in the rivers unsurprisingly was highest in the southern portion of the country where anthropogenic activities were concentrated.  相似文献

Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) potentially plays a major role in sustaining the high productivity and biological diversity of coral reefs. However, data are scarce regarding sources and sinks of DON. This study, for the first time, determined the 15N isotopic composition of total dissolved nitrogen (δ15NTDN), reflecting the isotopic signature of DON, in the water column over a coral reef. The uniformity in δ15NTDN during high tide (3.2 ± 0.3 ‰) indicated that the DON was mainly derived from offshore waters. In contrast, higher spatial heterogeneity of δ15NTDN (3.1 ± 0.9 ‰) and DON concentrations during low tide indicated the existence of local DON sources patchily distributed over the reef. Low δ15NTDN values located mid-reef were indicative of DON release from organisms that obtained their N via N2 fixation, whereas high δ15NTDN appeared to reflect localized release of DON by organisms exposed to dissolved inorganic nitrogen with elevated 15N, such as from terrestrial and offshore inputs. Collectively, the results highlight the importance of spatial patterns in DON release from reef communities in the N cycling of coral reefs.  相似文献

Tidal freshwater zones (TFZ) of coastal rivers link terrestrial watersheds to the ocean and are characterized by large, regularly inundated riparian zones. We investigated the effect of riparian denitrification on nitrogen flux in the TFZ Newport River, North Carolina (U.S.A.) by developing an empirical model of denitrification and parameterizing it using measured denitrification rates, sediment oxidation-reduction potential dynamics, and riparian topography. Denitrification rates were measured monthly in laboratory-incubated sediment cores by using a membrane inlet mass spectrometer to assess net water-borne N2 flux from the cores. Annual average rates of denitrification in three intertidal riparian habitats, emergent marsh, mudflat, and hardwood forest, were 1864, 1956, and 2018 μg m?2 h?1, respectively. Laboratory experiments and in-situ monitoring revealed that the temporal lag between tidal inundation and reduced, denitrifying conditions was 4–5 h. Field measurements and remotely sensed data showed that the inundated surface area during high tide was three times greater than that at low tide. By combining data on denitrification, oxidation-reduction potential, and topography, the model predicted that the daily denitrification flux constituted 2–15% of the daily riverine nitrate flux during most of the year and >100% during low discharge periods. Current regional and global nitrogen budgets thus may overestimate nitrogen delivery to the ocean by not accounting for the TFZ denitrification.  相似文献

There is increasing interest in the importance of nitrogen gas emissions from natural (non-agricultural) ecosystems with respect to local as well as global nitrogen budgets and with respect to the effects of nitrogen oxides on atmospheric ozone levels and global warming. The volatile forms of nitrogen of common interest are ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide, (N2O), dinitrogen (N2), and NOx (principally NO + NO2). It is often difficult to attribute emissions of these compounds from soils to a single process because they are produced by a variety of common biogeochemical mechanisms. Although environmental conditions in the soil often appear to favor nitrogen gas emissions, the potential nitrogen gas emission rate from undisturbed ecosystems is rarely approached. The best estimates to date suggest that nitrogen gas emission rates from undisturbed ecosystems typically range from > 1 to perhaps 10 or 20 kg N ha-1 yr-1. Under certain conditions, however, emission rates may be much higher. For example, excreta from animals in grasslands may elevate ammonia volatilization up to 100 kg N ha-1 yr-1 depending on grazer density; tidal input of nutrients to coastal wetlands may support denitrification rates of several hundred kg N ha-1 yr-1 . Excepting such cases, gaseous nitrogen losses are probably a small component of the local nitrogen budget in most undisturbed ecosystems. However, emissions from undisturbed soils are an important component of the global source strengths for (N2O + N2), N2O and NOx (50%, 21%, and 10% respectively). Emission rates of N2O from natural ecosystems are higher than assumed previously by perhaps 10 times. Large-scale disturbance may have a stimulatory effect on nitrogen emission rates which could have important effects on global nitrogen budgets. There is a need for more sophisticated methods to account for natural temporal and spatial variations of emissions rates, to more accurately and precisely assess their global source strengths.  相似文献

Climate change is predicted to have widespread impacts on freshwater lake and reservoir nutrient budgets by altering both hypolimnetic hypoxia and runoff, which will in turn alter the magnitude of internal and external nutrient loads. To examine the effects of these potential climate scenarios on nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) budgets, we conducted a whole-catchment manipulation of hypolimnetic oxygen conditions and external loads to Falling Creek Reservoir (FCR), an old, eutrophic reservoir in a reforested catchment with a history of agricultural land use. Throughout 2 years of monitoring, internal N and P loading during hypoxic conditions dominated the hypolimnetic mass of nutrients in FCR, regardless of changes in external loading. FCR commonly functioned as a net sink of N and P, except during hypoxic conditions, when the reservoir was a net source of ammonium (\( {\text{NH}}_{4}^{ + } \)) to downstream. We observed extremely high nitrate–nitrite (\( {\text{NO}}_{3}^{ - } {-}{\text{NO}}_{2}^{ - } \)), soluble reactive P (SRP), total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP) retention rates, indicating that the reservoir served as a sink for greater than 70% of \( {\text{NO}}_{3}^{ - } {-}{\text{NO}}_{2}^{ - } \) inputs and greater than 30% of SRP, TN, and TP inputs, on average. Our study is notable in the length of time since reforestation (>80 years) that a reservoir is still exhibiting high N and P internal loading during hypoxia, potentially as a result of the considerable store of accumulated nutrients in its sediment from historical agricultural runoff. Our whole-catchment manipulations highlight the importance of understanding how multiple aspects of global change, waterbody and catchment characteristics, and land use history will interact to alter nutrient budgets in the future.  相似文献

This study compared the growth, nodulation, N2 fixation, and ion distribution in three Medicago truncatula lines, in response to salt in nutrient solution. Two local lines (TN8.20 and TN6.18) and a reference line (Jemalong 6) were inoculated with a reference strain Sinorhizobium meliloti 2011, a very tolerant strain to salinity (700 mM NaCl) and grown in a controlled glasshouse with or without 75 mM NaCl. A genotypic variation in tolerance to salt was found: TN6.18 was the most sensitive line whereas TN8.20 was the most tolerant. The relative tolerance of TN8.20 was concomitant with the lowest leaf Na+ concentration and the highest nodule biomass production. However, nodule efficiency (amount of nitrogen fixed per g dry weight nodule) decreased in all lines. Results suggest that the tolerance to salt seems to depend on the host plant ability to protect its leaves against an excessive Na+ (and Cl?) accumulation, and its ability to maintain the development of an abundant nodular system, which in turn determines an important rate of nitrogen fixation and allows the plants to conserve their growth potentialities. The loss of the nodular efficiency under salt stress seems to be compensated by a large nodule biomass.  相似文献

Two field experiments were performed to evaluate the nitrogen fixation potential of twenty common bean cultivars and breeding lines during summer and winter seasons of 1986 and 1988, respectively. The 15N isotope dilution method was used to quantify N2 fixation. The cultivars and breeding lines were variable in terms of their N2 fixation. The cv. Caballero was very efficient, with more than 50% N derived from the atmosphere and 60–80 kg N ha–1 fixed in both seasons. Other cultivars were less efficient, since the poorest ones derived less than 30% of their nitrogen from the atmosphere and fixed less than 20 kg N ha–1. After additional testing the best cultivars may be used directly by the farmers for cultivation. The experiments have provided information about which genotypes may be used to breed for enhanced fixation in common bean.  相似文献

The regulatory roles of temperature, eutrophication and oxygen availability on benthic nitrogen (N) cycling and the stoichiometry of regenerated nitrogen and phosphorus (P) were explored along a Baltic Sea estuary affected by treated sewage discharge. Rates of sediment denitrification, anammox, dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA), nutrient exchange, oxygen (O2) uptake and penetration were measured seasonally. Sediments not affected by the nutrient plume released by the sewage treatment plant (STP) showed a strong seasonality in rates of O2 uptake and coupled nitrification–denitrification, with anammox never accounting for more than 20 % of the total dinitrogen (N2) production. N cycling in sediments close to the STP was highly dependent on oxygen availability, which masked temperature-related effects. These sediments switched from low N loss and high ammonium (NH4 +) efflux under hypoxic conditions in the fall, to a major N loss system in the winter when the sediment surface was oxidized. In the fall DNRA outcompeted denitrification as the main nitrate (NO3 ?) reduction pathway, resulting in N recycling and potential spreading of eutrophication. A comparison with historical records of nutrient discharge and denitrification indicated that the total N loss in the estuary has been tightly coupled to the total amount of nutrient discharge from the STP. Changes in dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) released from the STP agreed well with variations in sedimentary N2 removal. This indicates that denitrification and anammox efficiently counterbalance N loading in the estuary across the range of historical and present-day anthropogenic nutrient discharge. Overall low N/P ratios of the regenerated nutrient fluxes impose strong N limitation for the pelagic system and generate a high potential for nuisance cyanobacterial blooms.  相似文献

In the 1990s a sharp decrease in nitrogen loading occurred in Estonian rivers, bringing about a reduction of the nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratio (N:P ratio) in the large shallow lakes, Peipsi (3,555 km2, mean depth 7.1 m) and Võrtsjärv (270 km2, 2.8 m). The average mass ratio of total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) in Võrtsjärv (45) was about twice as high as that in Peipsi (22). In Peipsi, the N2-fixing Gloeotrichia echinulata, Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Anabaena species prevailed in the summer phytoplankton, while in Võrtsjärv the dominant cyanobacteria were Limnothrix planktonica, L. redekei and Planktolyngbya limnetica, which cannot fix N2; the main N2-fixing taxa Aphanizomenon skujae and Anabaena sp. seldom gained dominance. In May–October the critical TN:TP mass ratio, below which N2-fixing cyanobacteria (Nfix) achieved high biomasses, was ~40 in Võrtsjärv and ~30 in Peipsi. The percentages of both total cyanobacteria (CY) and Nfix (CY% and Nfix%) in Peipsi achieved their maximum values at an N:P mass ratio at or below 20 for both TN:TP and Nmin:SRP. In Võrtsjärv, the TN:TP supporting a high Nfix% was between 30 and 40 and the Nmin:SRP supporting this high percentage was in the same range as that in Peipsi (<20), though the maximum Nfix% values in Võrtsjärv (69%) were much lower than in Peipsi (96%). The Nmin:SRP ratio explained 77% of the variability in Nfix% in May–October. The temperature dependence of Nfix% approximated to the maximum function type, with an upper limiting value at a certain water temperature, and this was most distinct in May–October. The critical TN:TP ratios obtained from our study (roughly 30 for Peipsi and 40 for Võrtsjärv) are much higher than the Redfield N:P mass ratio routinely considered (7). Our results represent valuable guidelines for creating effective management strategies for large shallow lakes. They provide a basis for stressing the urgent need to decrease phosphorus loading and to keep the in-lake P concentration low, and not to implement nitrogen reduction measures without a simultaneous decrease of phosphorus concentration.  相似文献

Eighty soybean cultivars were assessed for their potential for nodulation and nitrogen fixation with indigenous rhizobia in a Nigerian soil. Seventy-six days after planting (DAP) 87%, 3% and 10% of the soybean cultivars had from 0 to 30, 31 to 60 and over 61 nodules/plant, respectively. Only 8% had a nodule dry weight of 600 to 1100 mg/plant. At 84 DAP the proportion of nitrogen derived from the atmosphere (Ndfa) ranged from 0 to 65% 16% of the cultivars derived 51 to 65% of their N2 from the atmosphere. The diversity of soybean germplasm and the variation in nodulation and N2 fixation permitted the selection of the five best cultivars in terms of their compatibility with indigenous rhizobia, % Ndfa and the amount of N2 which they fixed.  相似文献

The Lake Taihu drainage basin is an economically developed area with some of the highest population densities in China. The lake has deteriorated due to ecological destruction and eutrophication. Three short sediment cores from eastern, northeastern and southwestern Lake Taihu were collected. Total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), pigments, elements and particle size were analyzed for the purpose of understanding past trophic status and pollution levels. Sedimentation rates were based on 137Cs or 210Pb methods. Results indicated that sediment particle size became coarser since the 1920s, and the lake was contaminated by heavy metals, such as Cu and Zn, since the 1970s. A remarkable increase in eutrophication since the 1980s due to increased loading of untreated effluents from industry, agriculture and urbanization is reflected by total organic carbon, total nitrogen and pigments in the studied cores. However the onset times of eutrophication in different parts of Lake Taihu were not synchronous.  相似文献
